Bordering the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, Schleswig-Holstein is at the forefront of the German energy transition.
‘We work closely with TenneT as a key partner’, says Minister for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, the Environment and Nature Tobias Goldschmidt. ‘We have always had a good and fruitful exchange on the questions of power grid planning and the electricity market design.’
Schleswig-Holstein is an important landing point for offshore wind energy. The state plays a leading role in the distribution of green energy to other regions in Germany and elsewhere in Europe and also produces 8.5 GW of its own onshore wind energy. The federal state wants to be climate-neutral five years earlier than the German national target of 2045.
‘On the one hand, TenneT provides large parts of the critical infrastructure we need. And on the other hand, TenneT is a partner in the development of our own energy policy,' says the Minister. The collaboration between Schleswig-Holstein and TenneT began around 2010, when the AC grid connections between Germany and Denmark were reinforced or newly planned and the first DC sea cable connection with Norway was initiated, followed by the first DC connection to southern Germany
In addition to the need for green energy, Tobias also points to climate change and the severe floods that people in his state have faced. ‘So, people here know that we must fight the climate crisis and understand that expanding the power grid is essential for the energy transition.’
The German Minister states that TenneT is open to innovation. ‘TenneT was one of the first TSOs to install protective bird markers on high-voltage lines to reduce bird collisions, for example, and in some circumstances TenneT agreed to use underground cables rather than overhead lines. In these cases, there’s good cooperation based on innovation.’
Looking ahead, the Minister of Schleswig-Holstein sees four major challenges: ‘We must accelerate the creation of renewable energy, minimise conflicts that hinder the expansion of the grid, change the energy market and give industry the opportunity to transform in a way that keeps them here. We can only solve these challenges through cooperation. There is no alternative if we want to be successful.’
How do organizations view the energy transition? Six key partners share insights on technology, policy, and environmental challenges.

7 (1) of the Double Taxation Treaty between Federal Republic of Germany and the United States of America
The view of the Tax Court of Schleswig-Holstein can result in a double taxation if the carried interest is also taxed abroad
it must be analysed whether foreign tax can be credited or deducted in Germany
the judgement has a positive impact on fund managers of German asset-administrating funds domiciled abroad
However, the tax treatment of carried interest in cross-border cases has not yet been conclusively clarified to a large extent. The Tax Court of Schleswig-Holstein has now had the first opportunity to decide on the taxation of carried interest in an outbound situation (i.e. fund manager resident in Germany earning carried interest from a U.S. fund) under the relevant Double Taxation Treaty between Federal Republic of Germany and the United States of America (“Treaty“).
From 2011 onwards, the funds realised profits from the sale of portfolio companies for the first time, which resulted in payments of carried interest to the plaintiff. The German fund managers participated in the carried interest in accordance with the rules on profit distribution at the level of the plaintiff.
The facts of the case can be simplified and summarised as follows:
Whether the income constitutes other income within the meaning of Art. 21 (1) of the Treaty or capital gains within the terms of Art.13 (5) of the Treaty was left open by the Tax Court of Schleswig-Holstein for lack of relevance to the judgement, as Germany has the right to tax both types of income.
Given the fundamental importance of the legal question pertaining to the case, the Tax Court of Schleswig-Holstein authorised the appeal (§ 115 (1), (2) Tax Court Code).
In the case of originally commercial partnership funds, the country in which the fund is managed should generally have the right of taxation (possibly pro rata if the fund is managed in several countries). This may require coordination with the foreign tax authorities in order to avoid double taxation.

Denison-Schleswig opened their season on Monday with a dominant 11-0 win over Red Oak
Albert -- their first loss to the Falcons in a decade
"Our team is definitely a younger team," Coach Desy said
I think we're moving toward progression and developing chemistry
but I feel our young defense made some big strides in understanding the flow of the game."
The Monarchs' roster consists of seven seniors
They entered this season tasked with filling the void left by nine seniors from last year's squad

we'll see more success as we create chemistry."
Sophomore Osvan Diaz totaled four goals in the Monarchs' win over Red Oak
Miguel Hernandez and Kevin Sanchez also found the back of the net
"We've had some leadership step up," Desy said
we're going to be a lot more competitive because we'll see more talent
It will be interesting to see how we react to challenges
I'm excited to see that because I think we're up for the challenge."
Coach Desy wants to see his team improve defensively
That effort begins with goalkeeper Sebastian Contreras
Contreras has logged six saves and allowed just one goal in 120 minutes
"We need to connect that (the defense) with our offense," Desy said
"A lot of it is game film and watching our positions
I think chemistry and defense will be the key to our success."
The Monarchs have a seven-game stretch between games
followed by a run of four games in five days
They begin that gauntlet on Tuesday against Perry
Norwalk (Friday) and Dallas Center-Grimes (Saturday)
take care of our bodies and make sure our kids are focused

The Denison-Schleswig bowling program continues to thrive
and this year there will be plenty of representation for the Monarchs at the 2A state tournament
(Denison) -- The Denison-Schleswig bowling program continues to thrive
the girls and boys teams both qualified for state while three individuals on both sides advanced to the individual tournament
“It was really exciting to host this year,” Denison-Schleswig head coach Shelby Brawner told KMA Sports
“We haven’t hosted since I’ve been coaching
Getting that opportunity was a great experience this year
and the kids are very excited (to go to state)
we got three girls and three boys in individually
Everyone is pretty pleased with how they did.”
The success started on Monday with the girls team finishing as a district runner-up behind champion LeMars
They totaled 2,466 pins and then followed it up with state qualifications for Grace Collins
Collins took third with a 565 three-game series
Lutz tied for fourth with a 560 and Olson grabbed the eighth and final qualifying position with a 529
“It was just trying to keep up with (LeMars),” Brawner said of the team competition
“The lane changes didn’t affect them a whole lot
It was great to see how well (we) did and how well they worked together
They were there for each other the whole time
the Monarchs won the boys district championship with 3,216 pins before carrying the momentum into the individual tournament
Ethan Totten grabbed a runner-up qualification with a 695 series
and Gavin Schmadeke and Grant Fink were sixth and eighth
“We really thought we were going to be battling with Lewis Central and LeMars,” Brawner said of the boys competition
and they could have turned the tides against them
They could have shot that 175 and been down in the dumps
They shot a 200 for the rest of the first set (of Bakers)
and from there their energy was unstoppable.”
The Class 2A team tournament takes place at Waterloo’s Cadillac XBC on Monday at 3:00 PM
The individual tournament is the next morning at 9:00 AM
“You really have to pace yourself (at state),” Coach Brawner said
“Five Baker games at a time and just chunk it
so then you can eventually get that big one
We’re definitely looking forward to being there in Waterloo again next week.”

the Glenwood girls' basketball team took down Denison-Schleswig
this time advancing to a Regional Semifinal
(Glenwood) -- For the third time this season
The Rams (6-16) forced 32 turnovers and used a big second quarter to pull away for a 56-44 win over the Monarchs (3-20)
“It was a hard-fought game,” said Glenwood Head Coach Brian Rasmussen
“I thought both teams were trying to win a basketball game in the postseason
and I give them a lot of credit because they pushed us to the limit
This is the third time we’ve played them this year
and I was proud of our girls for doing that.”
Glenwood led 9-7 after one quarter and scored 13 of the first 16 points in the second frame
extending their lead to as much as 13 before Denison-Schleswig cut it to 10 at halftime
The Rams outscored the Monarchs by one point in each of the final two quarters
maintaining their advantage to secure the win
“I don't know if we played our best basketball tonight
I’m super proud of the effort from our side of the floor.”
Glenwood’s 2-2-1 press and half-court man-to-man defense caused fits for Denison’s offense all night
The Rams tallied 22 steals and forced 32 total turnovers
they want to get the ball to the middle of the floor and attack,” Rasmussen explained
We did it specifically for this game to make sure they couldn’t get the ball into the middle
slowed them down so they weren’t able to get anything easy.”
Maggie McChesney led the offense with 16 points
“We practiced [the press] a lot before this game
Maggie Smith added 11 points and five rebounds

The new strategy now describes the further measures towards the envisaged "digitally sovereign IT workplace"
This includes switching to the +1.Linux operating system on the computers
This is a distribution that is "suitable and professionally supported for use by the authorities" with a modern
Other measures described by the government in the paper include the switch to the open standard ODF (Open Document Format)
an open collaboration platform based on Nextcloud and the groupware Open Xchange with email
The plan also includes "digitally sovereign basic services
specialist procedures" and a matching telephony system called Oskar (open source communication architecture)
"The prerequisite for the widespread use of open source products is that the familiar functionalities work reliably with at least the same quality," emphasizes Digital Minister Dirk Schrödter (CDU)
"We will make the transition as smooth as possible for employees and support the well-planned migration process with training."
The state government is also hoping for improved IT security, lower costs, more data protection and simpler interaction between different systems. The previous black-green-yellow government had set itself the goal of "completely replacing" Microsoft & Co. in 2017
The black-green government backed off somewhat in 2022
The conditions for a changeover could hardly be better now
says Schrödter: "The clear trend towards collaborative
location-independent working in the cloud offers a unique opportunity to embark on the path to digital sovereignty at a time when a fundamental change in working culture is imminent anyway."
Schleswig-Holstein sees the promotion of the regional digital economy as a modern form of industrial policy
"Instead of investing our IT funding in license fees
we use it to finance development and support contracts," explains Schrödter
This strengthens Schleswig-Holstein as a business location overall
proprietors of the Iowa Great Lakes microbrewery West O Beer
brewed up a special Fat's Finest beer for the 125th anniversary celebration in Schleswig
is brewing up a limited run -- 50 cases -- of special-recipe beer for the 125th anniversary of Schleswig
will be available at the Oktoberfest-inspired beer garden during the celebration
Schleswig has a beer garden annually as part of its annual community celebration
but not every year is the quasquicentennial
"It's just enough for that weekend," said Matt Matthiesen
who along with wife Michaela owns and operates West O Beer
We've had several people reach out and say
who've been in the craft beer game for more than a decade
a town of about 830 founded by German immigrants in 1899 and named after the German state of Schleswig-Holstein
Their beer skills were sought out by the organizers of the 125th
which is geared as a salute to the town's German heritage
The Fat's Finest name is a nod to Fat's Place
a now-demolished bar and longtime Schleswig mainstay at the corner of Cedar and Second Street
The bar was operated beginning in 1973 by the late DeWayne Sonksen
who went by the sobriquet "Fat." Fat's Place was a rather typical small-town bar of its time
Schleswig is celebrating its 125th anniversary in September
everybody knew him as Fat," said Jodi Bruhn
co-chair of the Schleswig 125th celebration committee
we knew where we could find our parents." (At Fat's.)
the word craft was seldom associated with the word beer
beer was was a predictable product brewed in vast quantities in Milwaukee and St
certainly not by a small crew of recipe-tinkerers in Okoboji
Fat's was an unfussy domestic beer kind of place
An archival ad described it as the spot "where friendly people meet."
many memories were made there," Bruhn said
shown here behind the bar in this undated photo
was the proprietor of Fat's Place in Schleswig
Sonksen and his bar served as inspiration for Fat's Finest
a limited-run beer produced by West O Beer in commemoration of Schleswig's 125th celebration
and it remained in operation a few more years under a different name
Matthiesen said the Fat's Finest name "clicked" after some difficulty coming up with a name for the commemorative beer
"My wife and I kind of grew up in Schleswig in the '80s and '90s
and I remember (Fat's) being a staple throughout the '80s and '90s," said Matthiesen; the allusion to Fat's
should be recognizable to all but the youngest people in Schleswig
who reached out to the Matthiesens about brewing a commemorative beer
said she was thrilled with the graphic design West O came up with for the can -- a rosy-cheeked
pipe-smoking Bavarian man with a little red hat
against a blue-and-white diamond background
a German-style lager brewed by West O Beer
"I foresee people even just wanting to purchase it for a memento -- because it's just really neat," Bruhn said of the beer
Beer has long played a key role in the community gatherings of Schleswig: A photo taken when dignitaries of the other Schleswig (in Germany) visited Schleswig (Iowa) for a celebration in 1977 show pitchers and glasses of beer in every hand
Fat's Finest is a German-style lager; microbreweries have a tendency toward niche products -- heavy beers
But Matthiesen said West O wanted Fat's Finest to be something more approachable
that wouldn't have been totally out-of-place at Fat's
"We knew we needed something relatively light -- there's still going to probably be plenty of warm weather," he said
a lot of consumers are still interested in those light
So we didn't want anything that would scare anybody away."
