orchard row to get to school at the bottom of the hill in downtown Cashmere recipient of the Washington State Horticultural Association’s 2014 Silver Pear Award He’s always been involved in multiple ventures since he graduated from college in 1985 and began working with his father when he asked me to be involved in the orchard said part of the deal was I had to work for another company for five years.” “Not by being in the confines of your own little world It’s very hard to learn things without going out and experiencing them.” His first outside job was as a fieldman with Chamberlain Distributing He went on to work for Dovex Fruit Company and most recently for McDougall and Sons where he was both a fieldman and orchard manager After McDougall purchased Barden Farms in Monitor Schmitten was given the challenge of replanting the old Red and Golden Delicious orchard with newer apple varieties and cherries he continued to operate the family farm and lease other orchards His acreage has increased from 35 acres in 1987 to 180 acres today with 90 percent planted to pears.Ray Schmitten (left) and his long-time employee Antonio Maldonado prepare for the pruning season Schmitten says traditional orchards of d’Anjou and Bartletts can still be profitable he’s been involved in a number of businesses He was a partner in the packing company Cashmere Fruit Exchange from 1995 to 2002 He later had ownership in Cascade Powder Cats a company that offered guided backcountry skiing expeditions with accommodation at a yurt lodge in the Chumstick area He sold the business four years ago to spend more time with his family still operate a Laundromat in Cashmere and recently joined their eldest son Schmitten said he and his wife can’t help but get interested and excited in new ventures Besides juggling various jobs and businesses Schmitten has devoted a lot of time to representing the pear industry in research matters He was on the board of the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission for five years has been on the board of the Pear Bureau Northwest for almost 10 years and has served on the Fresh Pear Committee for 21 years said Schmitten is fair and grounded in his opinions and leads with vision “Ray has a true passion for pears and continues to be an asset to the entire pear industry.” Schmitten has been on the research subcommittee for 19 years “I do think that you really need to pay back to the industry for what you’ve gained,” he said you gain information and make acquaintances and friendships that you otherwise would not.” horticulturist with Blue Star Growers in Cashmere has known Schmitten ever since he started doing field work 30 years ago He said Schmitten is a phenomenally easy person to work with He can quickly grasp the situation and identify what the challenges will be and who will be the best person to tackle the research He has a good understanding of both research and industry priorities and needs “He’s a great individual to work with,” he added.Ray Schmitten’s great-grandfather built a saw mill near Cashmere in 1902 and founded the Schmitten Lumber Company He had a factory that supplied wooden boxes to the tree fruit industry until the switch to cartons in the 1950s and 1960s This lumber truck was used on the orchard up through the ’60s Schmitten said he personally thinks finding a dwarfing pear rootstock is the top research priority The Malling 9 rootstock has enabled apple growers to plant trees more densely and improve efficiency but there is still no dwarfing rootstock for pears Pear growers need to be able to modernize their orchards and grow smaller trees so pickers can use shorter ladders There’s a limited labor force that will harvest pears from 10- to 12-foot ladders because it requires some athleticism Schmitten has a four-year-old experimental block with d’Anjou and Bartlett trees spaced two feet apart with ten feet between rows The trees are on Old Home by Farmingdale 87 rootstocks shading soon leads to blind wood and low spur density a 6- by-12 foot spacing is as tight as he wants to go He feels confident that as rootstock breeders gain a better understanding of the genetics that control dwarfing they’ll be able to develop genetic markers to speed up the process of developing fully dwarfing pear rootstocks I think we have to use horticulture to keep the trees small,” he said pear growers in the Wenatchee River Valley don’t have a great incentive to change their orchards Many still have blocks with trees spaced 20 feet apart that are still very profitable “It’s real hard for me to convince the bank that I need to start cutting this out and replanting new pear orchards when I won’t get a return on that piece of land for seven years,” he said Schmitten said pest control last season was the worst he’s seen in almost 30 years Efficacy of the pesticides used is declining because of resistance and new products target specific pests unlike the old broad-spectrum organophosphates but stinkbug might pop up and you might control stinkbug “It’s a very complicated pest dynamic out there.”Ray Schmitten’s license plate demonstrates his commitment to the pear industry the cost of controlling pear pests has increased Schmitten spends about $1,200 per acre on pest control now up from a mere $200 an acre when he began farming The new products are safer for people and the environment but they make it harder to control the insects Schmitten plans to install an overhead irrigation system in all his future plantings so that he can wash the honeydew off the pear psylla and make them more vulnerable to pesticides He does not see new pear varieties as a research priority He’s concerned about the ability to secure shelf space at the retail store for a new variety and says a packing company would have to build a promotion and marketing program before he’d feel comfortable planting it ‘I know I can sell d’Anjous and I know I can sell Bartletts for a profit,” he said Schmitten believes there’s work yet to be done to ensure that d’Anjou and Bartlett pears are both edible and attractive when they reach the consumer Ripened pears can easily be bruised and damaged so it might take new types of packaging to protect the fruit He and his wife have done in-store sampling with the Pear Bureau several times in stores in Florida and Colorado and learned the importance of good eating quality I am very proud to be able to call Ray a friend and website in this browser for the next time I comment Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" had finally earned the opportunity to pitch for a Pac-12 program Everything was starting to come together for the hometown product – he attended Puyallup High School – who grew up dreaming of the day he could put on a University of Washington baseball uniform He was a member of the Huskies' baseball program He was ready to begin the next phase of his college career He found out he had a heart condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome "It's basically an extra valve in your heart that creates an irregular heartbeat if you get a little stressed out or your heart rate is up," Schmitten said instead of focusing on school and baseball "That was an eye opener for me," he said It took a pair of procedures to fix the condition "They got it taken care of," Schmitten said "It's probably one of the scariest things I've ever been through After the sugery Schmitten wanted to return to Washington's baseball program as quickly as possible. Strength and conditioning coach David Rak put Schmitten on a training program but it wasn't the physical conditioning that was difficult for the junior [Schmitten] now tries to get a little bit more out of each day and every opportunity – especially when he gets called on to pitch for the Huskies The toughest part of the recovery for the right-hander was convincing himself his heart was healthy I was still having some psychological effects second-guessing what was going on," he said He was always checking his heart rate to make sure he was OK There were times he would ask himself if he felt an extra He would sit at home and think about his heart well into the night "It's something that's really hard to get over," he said Schmitten turned a corner both mentally and physically he knew there was something strange going on in his body "I didn't really know what it was." He would experience "weird" spells while doing something active His heart would feel like it was beating "oddly" and he would get light-headed and dizzy "I came up with some breathing techniques to help it go away," he said "It would happen once a month and I would feel really odd about it In high school it actually happened a couple of times when I was on the mound It was just really something I just learned to cope with." "I'm just overall thankful that I went to university with such a good health program." Schmitten's focus is back on school and baseball making life difficult on Pac-12 hitters with his unique side-arm style a former Washington and Puyallup pitcher with a similar frame who also dropped his arm angle Schmitten decided that might be a style he could emulate who has been Schmitten's pitching coach since he first learned to throw a baseball also dabbled with a side-arm approach during his high school career Schmitten experimented with several arm angles "coming out a little bit hotter" on his pitches His ERA didn't top 1.00 his senior year in high school or his two seasons at Pierce Community College "the competition here is a lot more difficult than community college and high school," he said with a laugh He worked his way back from Tommy John surgery his first year of community college He endured two procedures to fix a heart condition Through it all he learned to be a little bit "happier." He now tries to get a little bit more out of each day and every opportunity – especially when he gets called on to pitch for the Huskies "There's nothing quite like it," Schmitten said It just feels like it's where I belong." employees and is located in Nidda The site's production capacity ranges between 7,000 tpy and 8,000 tpy The Ober-Schmitten Economic Committee and Works Council were notified of the closure and negotiations regarding a compromise of interest and social plan will begin immediately “This site has faced continued challenges from escalating energy “We increased prices for the electrical and glassine products in the fourth quarter of 2022 to avoid further losses and subsequently we lost meaningful business to our competition it became evident that Glatfelter is unable to compete in this market without a significant investment to streamline operations and substantially reduce the site’s overall manufacturing costs for these non-core products Two Eastmont summer baseball teams are representing the valley in state competition this weekend in Walla Walla and Lynden The Eastmont Strikers 19U team is coached by Brandon Schmitten and Eric Kuntz and the Eastmont Reds 16U team is coached by Bob Gallaher and Kyle Dockins both Strikers coaches Schmitten and Kuntz said the road to their first state appearance has not been an easy one we started off the season not doing too well  The defense was a bit rocky and then as we’ve gone on the defense has definitely improved  Our pitching has been continuously good and our hitting has improved a lot too so I just hope we continue to build as we go,” said Schmitten  Strikers coach Kuntz says that he has most enjoyed getting to know his players and watching them grow throughout the season  That’s what I’ve enjoyed a lot is see the boys improve during the season.”  Both Reds coaches Dockins and Gallaher said they are not surprised their team has made it this far  We started off a great season and its just continued through all the way  We’re a very young team compared to our competitors  Most of the teams we play have incoming sophomores  So we’re generally a year younger than everybody else  We came out of it as league champs in our division and a third seed to state so its been a pretty successful season so far,” said Gallaher Player Max Praiser agreed that his team expected to see post-season play as they have been to the state tournament before  “Yeah I thought we would because we have lots of talent on our team and we won state when we were 12 so I figured we could make it to state with this team,” said Praiser Dockins said he enjoys going out on the field each day and coaching his young players  “My favorite part of the season is getting to know the young guys ’cause this is the first time we get to meet the younger kids  So getting to know them before they get into the high school program is really fun for us,” said Dockins Reds players Max Praiser and Jordan Singleton both agreed that playing with their future high school teammates is beneficial to their team’s success  “You kind of have team chemistry…knowing who you’re playing with,” said Praiser “…it’s more of just knowing the players instead of coming up with brand new kids you’ve never met.” Dockins said “When we’re out here watching swings or watching guys throw then we get to see moving forward what  they need to work on and things they can get better at or things in their game that needs to be tweaked  “You know the nice thing is that the Reds team has Kyle Dockins who is my assistant coach during the high school season who has worked in our program for quite a while  So they learn all the ins and outs of our program at an early age  It’s really nice that they get all the new information at the 8th grade and 9th grade level and then continue it through our group,” said Schmitten The Strikers will head out Friday for Walla Walla  Both teams will play in a double-elimination style North Central Washington firefighting air show along Lake Chelan brought relief to nervous homeowners on Friday A D-C 10 dropped a crimson flame retardant on the ridge above the Schmitten's family property where they fly their WSU cougar flag."It's nerve-wracking just watching it," said Brent Schmitten who is staying with his father at their cabin despite level 3 evacuations The Schmitten's headed to their lakefront home a week ago when fires started burning 8 miles down lake Now flames are racing up Slide Ridge just a half mile from their cabin."I watched it creep up this way for the last 7 days so it's been very scary," said Leonard Schmitten The smoke fills the hillside behind their street and the nearby Kelly's Resort."At night it gets a lot scarier because you lose depth perception of how far or how close it is," said Schmitten His son said trees exploding in flames sounded like jets blasting by.All day Friday helicopters dipped into Lake Chelan dousing burning trees in 2 minute rotations Firefighters with chainsaws tried building a break along the slope to stop the wildfire from reaching any more homes than it already did the previous Friday.Chelan native Curt Harvey said All these escape route with the boat so we still feel safe but want to protect what's been in the family for a long time," Brent Schmitten said. While there are aircract helping overhead on the ground the Istanbul-based İŞ Holding has signed an agreement to buy the site on Tuesday 15 August The acquisition includes the sales and distribution offices in Suzhou and Hongkong The contracting parties have agreed not to disclose details of the transaction With the acquisition of the specialty paper mill the Turkish company will further expand its activities in Germany A project team from the Turkish group will immediately start work on the future of the site "We will invest in effective and energy-efficient paper production for the glass and electrical industries at the Ober-Schmitten site creating a sustainable operation for the future," said İlkem Şahin The transaction comes none too soon: at the end of May Glatfelter had announced that it planned to close down the plant due to increased energy and raw material costs and the plant's ensuing lack of competitiveness which demonstrated that the closure – scheduled for Q3 2023 – was the best solution for the company The entry in Saturday's Apple Blossom Grand Parade.  "Farm Life Lovin' Every Minute of It" was spelled out on the side of the colorful float in keeping with the 2024 Apple Blossom festival theme all eyes were probably on the seven foot replica of the famous Skookum sign that generations grew up with recognizing as a symbol they were in Wenatchee The beloved Skookum Indian sign most recently appeared for two decades on top of the Office Depot location on Wenatchee Avenue fruit warehouse.  The sign was removed for refurbishing in 2022.  At the time company officials said the Skookum logo was no longer in use.  The original was erected in Wenatchee in 1921 and was a double-sided wooden structure In announcing plans to re-introduce the Skookum sign in the parade Blue Bird said the Co-op stands behind the importance of the community's history and legacy Blue Bird CEO says Blue Bird’s management and Board of Directors decided to re-introduce the iconic sign in the Apple Blossom parade to promote excitement around the co-ops agricultural roots Schmitten says growing fruit has become very challenging for all growers for the family farms at Blue Bird as well as for the large corporate entities "We at Blue Bird want to bring a smile to our Valley There is no better place to reflect on our past and welcome in the future than the Wenatchee Apple Blossom Festival We relish our past and welcome the challenges before us." Could the Skookum sign's appearance signal a permanent display in the future Schmitten says the decision on whether the Skookum Indian sign will smile over Wenatchee on a permanent basis remains to be seen Blue Bird first wanted to gauge the public's reception to the sign' s appearance in the parade.  Schmitten has previously served on the Board of Directors of the Cashmere Museum which displays one of the largest collections of Native American artifacts on the west coast "I have the ultimate respect for our native culture The prevailing view from tribal representatives was that the Skookum Boy is a happy and positive image They felt the image was iconic and appropriate for preserving history  It is important to Blue Bird that the feeling still prevails." A check of social media posts on Facebook on Sunday revealed commenters were generally delighted to see the iconic sign and reminisced about their memories when the sign greeted visitors to  the Wenatchee Valley Schmitten says the original sign needs a complete overhaul if it is to be permanently displayed and could serve as an image of community pride.   Schmitten says no decision on a possible location or a time frame has been established It was fun to see the Skookum sign smiling in Wenatchee on Saturday.  It brought back my own fond memories of my first recollections of Wenatchee I moved tp Washington state from Southern California in 1973.  My earliest memory of driving through Wenatchee in he early 70's was seeing Ohme Gardens on the hillside and the Skookum Indian sign I have learned the replica sign in the Apple Blossom Parade was the handiwork of Lexer Nucamendi who handled all metal and mechanical work on the sign.  Eduardo Romero captured the personality of the original with all of the paint work Let's hope the replica makes a few more appearances if possible and maybe one day the Skookum sign will be smiling and winking at passers by again in Wenatchee The iconic Skookum sign was back in Wenatchee for a day, in the Apple Blossom Grand parade.\nRead More - Rating: 5/5 (1 reviews)- Read more on Tripadvisor This website is using a security service to Signup The Rajhans Group launches luxury chocolate brand Forget what your elders taught you about sharing and caring It does not apply to a bar of chocolate - so says premium chocolate brand Schmitten Created by the Rs 3,500-crore Rajhans (Desai Jain) Group The Rajhans Group has set up a manufacturing unit in Surat with 100 per cent European supply across all operations While the coco beans are Ghanaian and the recipe Swiss the unit boasts of state-of-the-art equipment from Switzerland But can a chocolate made in Surat be called Swiss or will it piggyback on perceptions and try to chew into the chocolate market pie in India decided that inserting the abbreviation for Switzerland - CH being the short for Confoederatio Helvetica - as seen in domain names and stamps of the country) would be a perfect fit for chocolate based on a Swiss recipe that is going to make one fall in love with it "We are a premium brand and India has very few high-end What was missing is the mass-premium range - which is where we come in," explains Khushboo Rai The chocolate market in India is valued at Rs 4,500 crore (according to ASSOCHAM) in which Cadbury owns a major share of 70 per cent Consumption is likely to grow by 25 per cent annually and cross Rs 7,500 crore by 2015 Schmitten is sold in moulds while another product The milk chocolate and dark chocolate variety of Schmitten will be priced at Rs 80 for a 70g pack The other variants (which come with raisins almond and orange) are priced at Rs 85 a pack the brand is trying to break the whole idea of sharing something that is too good the price point keeps it in the affordable range while being premium we are the only ones who will give you chocolates in a carton and not just a pack while the price is not at the extreme end." Schmitten will be available in select stores and premium outlets "We have realised that people do not mind shelling out a bit of extra money if they get a good product you wouldn't mind paying more than you do for a mass brand and are confident that when they do experience the Swiss taste ASSOCHAM says that 70 per cent of chocolate consumption happens in urban markets the brand has released a minute-long TV commercial which shows Priyanka Chopra singing to warn others from stealing her Schmitten 'Piggy Chops' explains what punishments can be meted out to those who eye her Schmitten a sneaky man follows manages to steal her Schmitten "The category we are trying to break into is about sinful and naughty chocolates What India is used to is the kind of chocolates that will replace sweets But there is more to it than that," explains Bobby Pawar Schmitten is targeting the urban youth between 15 and 25 years. The company has set aside Rs 60 crore per annum as advertising budget In the post launch phase there will be more activities on the digital medium following which shorter edits and more campaigns A twitter contest is underway where followers can share punishment ideas Publicis also plans to start a petition to make asking for Schmitten chocolate as a category in India has not developed properly "What we get here are mostly jaggery-based sweets And we needed something more than just the sweet kids and I am sure they are spending a lot of money on Priyanka as well It has an almost Chicago-like (the movie) feel to it But what it has to do with chocolate I cannot understand And while the OOH campaign makes you want the product at least once the TVC has nothing to show about the chocolate other than the last bit," points out Mehta Sambit Mohanty, creative head, DDB Mudra, North, has a similar feeling. He thinks that Schmitten could have learnt from Cadbury Bournville on how a 'Made in India' chocolate brand can exude international appeal The song and dance around Priyanka has left him wondering what the hoo-haa is about The lyrics border on being incomprehensible and that's sacrilege for this musical This so-called 'luxury chocolate' brand is trying too hard and it shows Saying you're a 'luxury' brand is one thing but showing it is quite another," says Mohanty Harish Bijoor Consults is clear that a product made in India cannot - and should not - be called Swiss "Swiss chocolates by definition will have to be made in Switzerland can at best be Swiss-like but not Swiss chocolates."
