Peters' penalty-kick save put Ramsey in position to capture its second straight North 1
Group 2 girls soccer championship amid Thursday's downpour
Her senior teammate then clinched it with a shot into the lower-right of the net that lifted the No
Check out the video of her goal at the top of this page
Schwanewede scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season in regulation before cementing Ramsey's 15th win in 16 games
"We had a rough start to the season [1-3-1], and I think our failures and our challenges early on really made us who we are," said Schwanewede, who also scored the winning PK in last year's sectional final against NV/Demarest
"That's really the reason why we won [Thursday]
HOW THEY GOT HERE: A look back at Ramsey's sectional-semifinal win
Ramsey (16-4-1) is one step closer to returning to the Group 2 state final
where it fell to Governor Livingston last season
This marked the Rams' eighth sectional final since 2010 and their fourth championship in that span
"The girls have been fantastic all season," said first-year head coach Drew Strohmeyer
That's what we have on the back of our shirts..
Ramsey has won the last two playoff meetings with Jefferson
it will face another Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference team, North 2 champ Parsippany Hills
Jefferson (15-4-4) remains in search of its first sectional championship since 1997
Peters' save turned the tide in Ramsey's favor after the Falcons jumped on top
Manhattan-bound senior Madison Eisele scored to open penalty kicks
and goalie Leah Demko followed with a save
The next four shooters all scored before a Jefferson miss
Junior Kim Creegan netted the PK that got Ramsey even at 3 before the Peters-Schwanewede show closed it out
10: Number of wins by which Jefferson improved after finishing 5-12-1 a year ago and losing its final 10 matches of the season
9: Consecutive wins for Ramsey since being knocked out of the Bergen County Round of 16 by rival Mahwah
8: Sectional titles by Ramsey all-time: Seven in Group 2 and one in Group 3
Its last championship repeat came in 2000-01
when the Rams went on to capture back-to-back state titles
3: Different coaches to lead the Rams to a sectional title in the past decade
as Strohmeyer joined Kevin Sabella (2018) and George Wright (2011
sophomore Helene Tyburczy and freshman Alexis Barrow netted the regulation goals for Ramsey
► Olivia Molinari netted a penalty kick after assisting on Schawanewede's first-half goal
one of two that resulted from corner kicks
A third Ramsey goal off a set piece was disallowed early in the second half
who is headed to play at Division I Wagner
while Eisele forced overtime with 16:54 to play in the second half
Our work's not done; we lost in the state final last year
we've got two left in us.” – Strohmeyer

RIDGEWOOD – Johnny Jackson isn’t allowing cancer and ongoing chemotherapy treatments to stop him from battling for another sectional title and reaching 2,000 career points
The senior guard may have surprised everyone but himself by scoring a game-high 30 points in Thursday’s season opener to lead Ridgewood to an emphatic and dramatic 64-48 victory over St
Joseph in Big North Conference boys’ basketball
“What Johnny did today is beyond inspiring,” Ridgewood coach Mike Troy said
“Obviously I don’t feel like myself,” said Jackson
it’s just been giving me some good energy.”
diagnosed with cancer in July and underdoing 12 chemo treatments
has learned to be more economical with his movements
he doesn’t handle the ball as much as he did last season
he sits during almost every timeout and drinks plenty of water
“Obviously I’ve been going through so much for the past couple of months now,” said Jackson
who last season led the Maroons to the North 1
“I’m definitely getting a little bit tired a little easier now
so I’ve got to be more swift and crafty with my moves
playing all but 80 seconds of a 32-minute game
showed the full repertoire of his offensive arsenal against a program known for its defense
build an 18-6 advantage and maintain a double-digit lead against No
“Johnny Buckets” shot 9-for-20 from the field
His first two baskets were 3-pointers and he scored 14 in the first half to stake Ridgewood to a 33-19 halftime lead
He opened the Maroons’ scoring in the second half with a back-door layup he turned into a three-point play
When he hit his fifth 3-pointer midway through the third
Ridgewood fans chanted “John-nee Buck-ets.”
But I knew from the second that ball was tipped that we were going to have it
Ridgewood was stellar and in midseason form and senior guard Charles Schwanewede supported Jackson in more ways than one
Schwanewede has taken over the majority of Jackson's ball-handling duties
and he also shaved his head and wore a headband
“Everyone knows about John and his condition
and I shaved my head four months ago when he first shaved it too,” Schwanewede said
“I’ve been re-buzzing ever since just to support him – he’s one of my best friends
I love him to death and I want to support him on and off the court.”
“If he’s going to play the minutes he’s playing
I can’t ask him to defend the point guard on the other team and handle the ball on our team
“I think Charlie is really stepping up as a great primary ball handler.”
Jackson now has 1,494 career points and he expects to play the entire season
He has two more chemo treatments that should not interfere with his ability to compete
we went to dinner and I ordered him a coach’s polo [shirt] because he wanted to be on the bench with us,” Troy said
‘You’re going to do about five to six months of treatment,’” said Jackson
But obviously I want to get back on the court
So I’ve been in the gym every day working on my cardio
and just trying to get to this point today
I didn’t think I could look forward and say
‘Am I going to be playing every game?’ I didn’t think I was going to be playing a game
