After three years of construction, the Toggenburg Sound House on Lake Schwendi above Wildhaus SG is about to open. The 23.3 million Swiss franc building is intended to become an important place for music and culture as a walk-in instrument.
On Monday, media representatives were given an insight into the building as well as a musical taster. St. Gallen councillors Susanne Hartmann (center) and Laura Bucher (SP) also travelled to Schwendisee for the media conference. The Klanghaus is a visionary project that cannot be found anywhere else, explained Hartmann.
The wooden building with its unconventional shape contains four sound rooms. Two outdoor stages allow music experiments to be carried out in the open air.
Thanks to the incomparable acoustics, both professional musicians and amateurs will travel to Toggenburg for rehearsals, courses, workshops and seminars. This should have a positive impact on the economy, tourism and society. The official opening will take place on May 24 and 25.
A pair of large medieval German panels that have belonged to the same family for more than 500 years are to be auctioned at Sotheby’s Old Master & 19th Century Paintings evening sale in London on 3 July. Painted by Bartholomäus Zeitblom (1455-1518), they are expected to fetch between £400,000 and £600,000.
The donor couple portrayed on what were originally the wings of an altarpiece for the St. Anna Chapel in the southern German town of Schwendi are Wilhelm von Schwendi, who died in 1522, and Barbara Krafft von Dellmensingen. The consignor is a direct descendant of Krafft von Dellmensingen, who died in 1538.“It is very unusual for artworks to stay in the family of the donors for such a long time,” says George Gordon, Sotheby’s Co-Chairman, Worldwide Old Master paintings.
Sotheby’s says that the altarpiece was commissioned in around 1500. Zeitblom is known to have moved to Ulm by 1482, and remained there until his death, carrying out commissions for wealthy families in the region. “There are a lot of portraits from this era, but very few of them are attributable to an artist,” Gordon says. “The vast majority of artists of this era are anonymous.”
In 1758, members of the Krafft von Dellmensingen family removed the panels from the altarpiece and took them to their home—a step that may have saved them from Napoleon’s plunder, Gordon says. It also accounts for what he describes as their “lovely condition.” In 1963, the missing panels in the church were replaced with modern replicas.
“These panels not only have an unbroken provenance since their creation but are also among the best-preserved donors panels by the Ulm master that still exist today,” the Sotheby’s catalogue note states.

After about a foot of snow blanketed the White Mountains of New Hampshire on Thanksgiving
skiers and riders were getting in the mood to start their ski seasons
They didn’t have many resorts to choose from
and Waterville Valley had all recently opened
and each had about an equal amount of open terrain
We chose to visit Waterville Valley as it was the closest to us
at only about a one and three-quarter hour drive
We rolled into the Waterville Valley parking lot at around 8:00 a.m.
after a drive that took a little longer than anticipated
After quickly putting on our gear and grabbing our tickets
we walked over to the Tecumseh Express lift and put our skis on
The Tecumseh Express took us up about 1,500 vertical feet to almost the top of the mountain
giving us a view of some of the open terrain along the way
we could either venture another 400 vertical feet up the High-Country T-bar
or ski down about 800 vertical feet to the bottom of the Northside Chair
Top-to-bottom skiing was sadly not available
but the resort hopes to provide this in the next couple of days
Downloading on the Tecumseh Express with skis off was mandatory at the end of the day
High Country T-bar provided access to a park
Northside gave access to the other remaining few trails
The coverage at the top of the mountain was great on all 12 groomed trails that were open
perfect for shaking the dust off of those bump skills
The coverage on the natural runs was a bit thin
as the mountain had only received about two feet of natural accumulation this season
and it was a treat to have access to them this early in the season
including the Schwendi Hutte at the top of the mountain
and the Freestyle Lounge and Marketplace at the base area
We had a great lunch at the Freestyle Lounge
which offered a great menu composed of different gourmet sandwiches
with the natural trails being my favorite by far
My skis had a few close calls with rocks and roots
but the bases were still fine at the end of the day
when the groomers were starting to get a little scraped off in spots from skier traffic
We rode the Northside Chair to the top of the mountain once more
Waterville Valley aims to open top to bottom this week
combined with the possibility of natural snow accumulation this Thursday/Friday should allow them to expand terrain quickly
Tickets will still be priced at early season rates
with an adult day ticket and a child day ticket currently costing $74 online and $63
Take advantage of these early season rates and get out on the mountain

If you're looking for creative ways to cool off this summer and like the idea of sleeping under the stars, you may want to consider a stint at one of Zero Real Estate's outdoor hotel suites in the Swiss Alps
The Toggenburg project by Zero Real Estate
is based on an idea by artists Frank and Patrik Riklin
who have essentially taken three hotel rooms and dropped them into the middle of secluded Wildhaus
in Switzerland's picturesque Toggenburg region
There’s the "Burst Suite" which sits above the Toggenburg valley at the foot of the Alpstein massif (pictured below)
And the “Schwendi Suite” above the Schwendiseen
And, finally the “Stump Suite” (pictured below) which is set under a canopy of trees, near Hotel Stump's Alpenrose
Sadly the first two suites are fully booked for 2018
though there's still availability at the latter – the Stump Suite – which is conveniently located close to the hotel's wellness spa
