Established on the shores of Lake Schwerin in northeast Germany
the Schwerin Residence Ensemble is an architectural and landscape ensemble
which fits very precisely within the context of the emergence and development of the historicist style in Europe
Created for the most part in the 19th century in what was then the capital of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in northeast Germany
including the Grand Duke’s Residence Palace and manor houses
But it also fulfils all the functions required of a ducal capital in terms of administration
The buildings form an exceptional architectural ensemble
ranging from Neo-Classical to Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance and even includes in certain cases references to the more regional Neo-Renaissance "Johann-Albrecht" style
Established on the shores of Lake Schwerin
the Schwerin Residence Ensemble is an architectural and landscape ensemble which fits very precisely within the context of the emergence and development of the historicist style in Europe
and particularly in the German kingdoms and principalities
The establishment of the seat of Grand Ducal power in the 19th century led to the implementation in the city of Schwerin of an architectural and landscape programme that illustrates all the civil and religious functions of a capital city that was the seat of a monarch
As result of the diversity of the architectural programmes
the ensemble provides a wide spectrum of buildings
which reflect the 19th-century historicist style
and in certain cases refer to the more regional “Johann-Albrecht” style
connecting the programmes even more closely to the history of the Grand Duchy
The choice made to establish the seat next to lakes and ponds
creating a landscape in which the architecture and gardens are reflected in the water
is a perfect illustration of the romantic taste in 19th-century Europe
Criterion (iv): The Schwerin Residence Ensemble fits within the context of the emergence and development of the historicist style during the 19th century in Europe. Remarkably well-preserved
it constitutes an outstanding European royal residence ensemble of the 19th century by way of the richness and diversity of its architecture and landscape features
which express the whole spectrum of historicism
from neo-Renaissance to neo-Baroque and neo-Classicism
neo-Gothic and the regional “Johann-Albrecht” historicist style
The boundaries of the Schwerin Residence Ensemble encompass all the landscape
as well as the perspectives and visual axes
necessary to express its Outstanding Universal Value
The property in its landscape context presents the necessary characteristics to express the importance of this well-preserved historicist ensemble; it is not threatened by any unfavourable development or abandonment
or form of the thirty-eight elements comprising the Schwerin Residence Ensemble have been preserved
resulting essentially in adaptations and alterations to interior arrangements
structures and materials of the ensemble have been preserved
The relationship of the buildings to their landscape setting
whether with the gardens or the lakes and ponds
The thirty-eight elements comprising the Schwerin Residence Ensemble are protected at Federal level and by the Monument Protection Act (DSchG M-V) of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
The elements are identified as properties whose preservation is a matter of public interest
The Federal Building Code (Baugesetzbuch – BauGB
amended in 2017) provides the basis for land use and urban planning; it includes provisions for the preservation of properties inscribed on the World Heritage List
the laws and regulations relating to the protection of nature and landscapes
also apply within the boundaries of the property and its buffer zone
A management plan has been prepared to be used as a control and planning instrument
It will have to be periodically assessed and updated
is a crucial element to ensure the coordination and effectiveness of the management of the property
A rigorous strategy for the conservation of the buildings in the ensemble
and particularly of the interior layouts of those open to the public
and for the management of tourist flows inside the property and in the city
is essential to ensure that the Outstanding Universal Value of the property is maintained in the long-term
“It goes back to that only the strong survive,” says Soledad inmate John Piccirillo

To my fellow working people of Franklin County who voted for and have been supporting President Donald Trump — please take a moment and reflect on what is happening to our country
Trump just enacted a massive tax increase on working Americans
they are paid by consumers with the money going directly to the U.S
the president is allowing a billionaire to make equally massive and destructive cuts to programs that we all rely on
necessities for a functioning society that are available to all Americans
Where is the money the government will collect through these tariffs going to go
Trump and Musk do not have a coherent plan
They’re not playing some game of three dimensional chess that no one else understands
They are showmen who make grand dramatic gestures and have little interest in doing the hard work of making informed
We’re all paying the price for it now and it is going to get worse
I agree with many of you that the government before Trump was dysfunctional and not working well for the average person
but I hope that some of you will start to see that this dangerous regime is not the answer
Please stop and think about the kind of world you want to live in
the kind of world you want to leave to our children and reconsider your support for this president

With its castle dubbed ‘Neuschwanstein of the North’
the cultural landscape of Schwerin has been recognised by UNESCO for its outstanding 19th-century heritage…
Germany is often associated with fairytales
thanks to popular stories such as Hansel & Gretel
Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty rooted in German folklore
And it’s easy to see how they were inspired
with approximately 25,000 castles and palaces adorning the country’s landscape
only a handful of its these fortresses have been recognised by UNESCO
but one more has just been added to the prestigious list
The organisation’s latest inscription has brought attention to one of the greatest examples of Romantic historicism in Europe
it isn’t found in the emerald mountains of Bavaria
Schwerin was once the capital of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin
resided by the House of Mecklenburg dynasty
The low-lying city is almost flooded by several serene bodies of water
and standing on an island within its largest lake – Lake Schwerin – is its most monumental landmark
has existed in its present form since the mid-19th century when the dynasty ruled
although the site’s history dates back much further
Archaeologists have traced the site back to 942 when a Slavic fortress once stood its place
however the Slavic tribes were conquered by an army commanded by Henry the Lion
It was after this in the year 1160 that Schwerin was officially founded
the palace witnessed various transformations as a ducal residence
it was remodelled on French Renaissance architecture under the instruction of Frederick Francis II
It is this interior and façade that has been wonderfully preserved until this day
and is what has been recognised by UNESCO for ‘reflecting the historicist spirit of the time’
the castle dubbed ‘Neuschwanstein of the North’
with numerous turrets and towers piercing the sky with their charcoal cone-shaped tops
with highlights including the Throne Room and Ancestral Portrait Gallery
it is an artistic masterpiece: segments of wood veneer are pieced together to create a floor pattern that’s almost too pretty to walk on
while the off-white stucco ceilings swirl around angelic paintings and chandeliers
Flashes of gold catch your eye throughout the building
as gilding is used to decorate picture frames
Schwerin Castle is a seat in State Parliament
Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the museum and palace rooms
or book a guided tour to gain a deeper understanding of the historical importance of the building
Although the magnificent fortress outshines its surroundings
the castle’s baroque garden with its cast-iron orangery
sculptures and flower beds contend in close second
The castle and its gardens aren’t the only components under the UNESCO listing
There are more than 30 elements included within the Schwerin Residence Ensemble
with the buildings around Old Garden Square being of particular note
a theatre and a railway station all contribute to the story of this 19th-century landscape
and how it was shaped by the House of Mecklenburg-Schwerin dynasty to create a capital fit for any fairytale
Schwerin is the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northeastern Germany
The nearest international airport is Hamburg Airport
get the train from Hamburg Central Station to Schwerin Hbf
although some quicker services are available
Sitting alongside the UNESCO-listed Pfaffenteich, Niederländischer Hof has more than 120 years of history within its Dutch Court walls

That joy can be ours as well. No matter what the darkness is in our life

Let him fill you! Invite him in! It was for this very reason he came

A picture-postcard colorful old town with a Gothic cathedral
A 19th century castle overlooking ornate lakeside gardens
And deep divisions over who belongs and who doesn’t
The country’s election campaign has shone a light on the fracture at the heart of Europe’s largest nation
23 vote has come down to migration — those who consider an influx of foreigners as a fundamental threat to German society
and those pushing for more inclusivity and less stigma
where the anti-immigrant far-right Alternative for Germany
would be unprecedented in the country’s postwar history — has brought it into sharp relief.
Nowhere is the choice as stark as in Schwerin
one of the contests for a seat in the country’s parliament pits a migration official in Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government who came to Germany as an immigrant against a top politician from the AfD
Migration “is overshadowing the entire election campaign,” said Reem Alabali-Radovan
who has represented the district in parliament for the center-left Social Democrats
someone sprayed black paint over her face on one of her campaign billboards
Although parties like hers had planned to focus their campaigns on other issues
“events have made migration the main issue now — and there’s a competition [among some parties] to outdo each other in terms of proposing restrictive measures.”
use far-right support for the first time as he pushed for a migration crackdown
“It pains me that this is how the issue is being debated — it’s important that we ensure security
but migration is much more than that,” Alabali-Radovan told POLITICO
“I would like us to separate [the two issues] more clearly
to pay attention to the issues and the choice of words
as Merz or the [center-right Christian Democratic] Union often do
to place entire population groups under general suspicion.”
is among those pushing for the strictest controls on migration because
as he told a crowd of supporters in Schwerin
he considers it an “existential” threat to the country
the dominant issue,” Holm told POLITICO before his speech
After the attacks in Magdeburg and Aschaffenburg
“that is also the dominant thing that you hear [from voters] at information stands — that things can’t go on like this
they can’t come to terms with this migration issue.”
Holm described the arrival of migrants in Schwerin and the surrounding areas — including at a refugee center in the city — as posing long-term risks to the area’s identity and security
“We have cities that have already shifted so much that you can hardly recognize them as Germany anymore,” he told the crowd
“And in Schwerin we are experiencing this progress — which is not progress at all
but of course a step backward — also developing in this way.”
No one knows yet which vision will win out in Schwerin. The website zweitstimme.org
sees a likely victory for Holm and the AfD.
That would track along with trends in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as a whole
which show a marked shift toward the AfD and away from the SPD since the last federal election in 2021.
11 points ahead of the AfD — but recent polling puts the AfD in a strong first-place position this time around
In addition to serving as a member of parliament
Alabali-Radovan leads the German government’s anti-racism efforts and serves as a top official on migration and refugee policy
She has personal experience with the issue: She was born in Moscow to parents from Iraq and the family came to Germany when she was a child.
“People have become more radical — the statements are more radical
Sometimes you can’t even have a conversation anymore,” Alabali-Radovan said
that it’s become so entrenched that you can’t accomplish much with conversations anymore
“We’ll take decisions to protect ourselves.”
In Germany’s next parliament the AfD will have more speaking time
more money and more power to hammer centrist parties
With Merz at the helm and the SPD’s Boris Pistorius likely gaining a seat at the table
Ukraine can expect a stronger ally in Berlin
Based on more than a dozen interviews in the final weeks of the German election campaign
POLITICO tells the story of how violence and migration shaped one of the most momentous votes in the country’s postwar history

A number of sites across the world are still being assessed in India for inclusion in the United Nation's cultural agency's World Heritage List - a collection of outstanding landmarks and areas of natural or traditional unique environments
As protection of these sites is paramount there are also some examples that have been placed on an alternative line-up of places at risk of being harmed
The Vjetrenica cave is the most recent landmark added to the protected list becoming the fifth site to be recognised in Bosnia and Herzegovina
UNESCO describes it on its website as “the property that stands out with its remarkable cave biodiversity and endemicity.” Within the cave
there are several pre-tertiary relict species whose relatives went extinct a long time ago
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) will work with the state’s party to guarantee sufficient water to the cave system and supply adequate funding

Potential undiscovered archaeological artifacts were also cited as in need of protection

The attempt to build a tunnel has gone on since the 1980s but has been rejected for being “too expensive”
After a reportedly hour-and-a-half conversation in New Dehli however
the committee decided to not add it to the list of sites at risk
UNESCO’s issued an amendment to reverse a prior decision
essentially overturning all rulings and conversations from the past
“This is a dark day for Stonehenge and a hollow victory for the UK government as this decision won’t stop the harm to the World Heritage Site.”
Stonehenge was built on the flat lands of Salisbury Plain in stages starting 5,000 years ago
The stone circle was created around 2,500 B.C.

German reunification is celebrated every year on 3 October
Discover five facts about the Federal Republic’s most important public holiday
On 29 September 1990, the decision made by the then People’s Parliament of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) came into force, bringing the GDR into the territory governed by the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany. A week later, East Germany was officially part of the Federal Republic of Germany. Ever since then, 3 October has been marked as Day of German Unity
Every year, a different city and a different federal state are given the task of celebrating the Day of German Unity in their own way. Schwerin will be hosting the celebrations for the 34th anniversary. Schwerin is state capital of Mecklenburg-Lower Pomerania, the least populous of Germany’s 16 federal states
The motto for the unification celebrations in Schwerin is “Setting sail as one: strengthening democracy and diversity together”

This article was produced by National Geographic Traveller (UK). A host of new sites have just been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List — a collection encompassing over 1,000 of the world’s most spectacular cultural heritage sites. With the new additions ranging from a romantic, 19th-century German ducal capital to a biodiverse, animal-rich cave network in Bosnia and Herzegovina; Europe’s newest listings are well worth exploring.
A picture-perfect image of ornate, traditional German architecture surrounded by the blue waters of Lake Schwerin, this cultural ensemble comprises 38 of Schwerin’s most striking and sacred landscape and architectural features. Steeped in Neo-Renaissance and neoclassical influences, the architecture of Schwerin captures the essence of 19th-century Germany with its ornamental public gardens and cultural buildings tied together by the grand, elaborate domes of Schwerin Castle.

One evening in late September 2017, we were strolling down a cobblestone street in Rome’s bohemian Trastevere neighborhood. We had just shared a branzino at one of her favorite restaurants, a cozy little trattoria near Piazza di San Calisto, and were looking for somewhere to go dancing.
Taking my hand, she led me down a narrow side street. Then this woman who had surprised me so many times before did something that I would never have expected.
After the campaign was over, we went our separate ways. I moved to Washington, D.C., to work in Hillary’s Senate office. YJ eventually went back to New York and started law school at Columbia. We kept in touch, our old rivalry settling into a warm but not especially close friendship.
A few years later, in 2009, I was in New York visiting my grandmother, who was in the hospital with a broken hip. That night, emotionally drained, I met YJ for a drink. I told her how it had felt to hear my grandmother, once such a force of nature, a vital writer and composer, tell me that she wanted to die. As I talked, I wondered: Why was I pouring my heart out to this woman I’d barely seen over the past three years? Why did I feel like such an open book around her?
So was living in Southern California. YJ and I hiked in the canyons, lay on the beach, grew bougainvillea on our porch, and made pesto from scratch. We said to each other that living well was the best revenge.
In September, after Hillary’s book was published, YJ and I headed to our friends’ wedding in Italy. The beautiful little seaside town of Amalfi was full of former campaign colleagues and old D.C. friends. Like us, they were all trying to find new ways to be happy in a world that felt upside down.
After dinner, YJ and I walked hand in hand through the ancient streets. This wasn’t the life we’d expected, but it felt right. Then she pulled me into the side-street and paused under a vine-covered trestle. When I turned around, it seemed as though she was tying her shoe. But YJ looked up and, from one knee, said very seriously, “Can I ask you something? Will you marry me?” Was this a joke? “Of course,” I said, laughing. She kissed me, and I realized it wasn’t a joke at all.
When I got over my surprise, I was thrilled. And while I still wasn’t going to change my last name, I offered to add hers as a new middle name. (The jury’s out on whether she’ll reciprocate.) After waiting so many years, we decided to move quickly. So just two months later, the day after Thanksgiving, we took our families on our favorite hike in Malibu, and on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, we got married. It was a simple ceremony, but I loved every minute of it.
“Growing up, I felt so limited in my options,” YJ said as part of her vows, fighting back tears. “I wish I had known back then how incredibly my life would turn out. I wish I could tell my younger self not to fear; nothing would hold me back. I could be independent, delay marriage, travel the world—and have a partner by my side encouraging me every step of the way.”
