Let’s take in the air at one of the county’s alluring gardens at Castle Schwetzingen
Strolling through the French Baroque-style gardens is refreshing for the soul
the grounds are immaculately manicured and styled with splendid seasonal flora
Listening to the sounds of the water features will have you relaxed in no time and feeling cleansed of your winter confinement
Other than expansion and minor redesigns by new owners
the grounds are largely unchanged from its original construction
This is extremely unusual for most of the country after World War II
The grounds are extensive with much to see
don’t forget to check out the Apollo and Mercury temples
the Orangerie is the perfect location to step inside
All the tropical vegetation is stored in here during the winter months
One simply can’t visit castle gardens without actually going to the castle
Castle Schwetzingen wasn’t destroyed in World War II like so many other prominent structures in Germany
some of the interior pieces were lost or destroyed due to the Allied forces occupation
Thanks to documentation from 1775 and 1804
Guided tours are a great option to get to know the castle and gardens and their extensive history
to give you a different way to enjoy the property
Feel like royalty and dine in one of the castles two restaurants
Castle Restaurant Schwetzingen offers a more fine dining experience
There is a wonderful variety in their menu
which is based on seasonal ingredients and includes choices for vegan diets
Kurfürstenstube Schwetzingen is ideal for breakfast or afternoon coffee and cake
When you make a day of visiting this castle
you’ll have time to enjoy both restaurants
You can’t go wrong with either if you have to choose just one
The charming atmosphere alone makes the experience worth it
Try to make reservations in advance so you’re sure to get a table
Bellamar water park offers some water fun for all ages
Spielplatz (playground) for some more outdoor fun
The whole family will be worn out by the time you leave
Shoppers should check out Carl-Theodor-Straße and Mannheimer Straße for some local retail therapy
This amazing town is east of Kaiserslautern and south of Wiesbaden
The drive is approximately one hour from both
The closest parking to the castle is the Schlossgarage
You also have the option of taking the train to the Schwetzingen main station
It’s in the center of town and about a 10-minute walk to the castle
Get out and kick-start the season with a visit to Castle Schwetzingen and its surrounding city

Most Americans have probably heard of Heidelberg. And if they've been to Germany
I lived near Heidelberg for years and the old town is quite nice
One of the most beautiful and relaxing spots in the Heidelberg area can be found in the town of Schwetzingen
Schwetzingen Palace and Garden was built as a summer home by the then ruler of Heidelberg/Mannheim
The town grew around the castle and its garden
In the spring you get a garden full of cherry blossoms
in the fall and winter a quiet space for reflection
you can always find a lone bench to sit and relax and get away from the crowds
There is also a lovely restaurant/café with outdoor seating
I love going there with a book and whiling away the hours
You can take a tour of the palace or just explore the extensive gardens
The Rococo theatre on the castle grounds offers concerts
One of my favorite places in Germany is Rügen Island
It was named a world natural heritage site in 2011 due to its chalk cliffs and a large number of beech trees
with a bridge connecting it to the mainland at Stralsund in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
This state is well known for its beautiful nature
so you can combine a visit to the island and the mainland
The busiest times tend to be in the summer and at New Year’s
There are several towns on the island of varying sizes
and vacation apartments to be rented (usually for at least a week)
It's so relaxing to just stroll through one of the towns on the sea and feel refreshed and rejuvenated
The island is also a perfect place to hike
There are trails everywhere and you can rent a bike in many places
The views of the hills and the Baltic Sea are just breathtaking
And almost every town on the water offers a beach
There is a large national park Jasmund in the northeastern part of the island featuring white chalk cliffs and many nature trails
I live in Lindau on Lake Constance in the farthest southern reaches of Germany
It is an amazing area with so many hiking trails
It is also highly fertile with all kinds of apples
you will probably pass at least three or four small
The coolest thing about the lake is that you can be in four different countries as you drive around or near it: Germany
a beautiful medieval town right on the lake known for its wine and history
There is a long promenade with plenty of cafés to sit
visit Feldkirch about 30 minutes south of the lake
Another medieval town with an interesting connection to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
head to a world heritage site in the city of St
explore the tiny capital of Vaduz with a breathtaking view of the castle overlooking the town
Much of Dresden was destroyed during World War II
but has been lovingly restored over the past two decades or so
There are beautiful castles and churches and buildings to explore in the old town
which you can spend a few hours or a whole day exploring
One of the highlights, and one of my favorites, is the Grünes Gewölbe Treasury & Rooms
These restored rooms and riches from the royal treasury are well worth a visit
Everything you will view is just stunning as you move from room to room
One floor is dedicated to the (literally) brilliant rooms
the other floor shows selected items from the collection
I recommend booking a ticket online in advance
This region in southwest Germany boasts one of the largest contiguous forests in Germany
so you can explore the area over a day or two from your base in Heidelberg or stay in one of the lovely local hotels or inns
One of my favorite hiking areas in the Palatinate is just outside the town of Bad Dürkheim
around the large castle ruin of Hardenburg
There are numerous hiking trails for all fitness levels
you can even relax at an outdoor café on the castle grounds and enjoy a beer or coffee after a hike
One of the best things about the Palatinate region is that it is also known for its outstanding wines and cuisine
One of the most famous wine towns is Deidesheim
which also boasts a number of excellent restaurants and hotels
You can hike among the valleys and fields and hills
then check out one or more of the local wineries

5 Reasons to Move to Germany

Correction: This story has been updated to say that the 2019 Spargel Festival event is May 4 and activities start April 27
Germany — Nearly 50 years after moving to Michigan from Germany
Marianne May still can’t quite fathom Americans’ fondness for green asparagus.
“When I saw green asparagus I said
‘You people in America are crazy,’” recalls the Clarkston resident
“Green is what we feed to the cows and pigs
is the fresh white asparagus that’s considered a delicacy – and enjoys almost cult status --- in Germany
Though the stalks typically are bigger than green asparagus
they’re milder and sweeter than what we’re accustomed to eating in the United States
“You peel them so they’re tender and very delicate -- they just melt in your mouth,” May says of the thick white stalks she helped clean and deliver to the local co-op from her family’s plot in Philippsburg
inside mounds of sandy soil that shield it from sunlight and chlorophyll production
That growing method has prompted wags to dub it “the vampire of the vegetable world.”
white asparagus was cultivated and laboriously hand-harvested on some 1,800 German farms last year
mostly by temporary workers from Eastern Europe
It’s available throughout Germany at farm stands
Price for the top grade this season is about $5 per pound
white asparagus can be found seasonally at gourmet groceries including Whole Foods
according to the stores’ produce clerks
spring’s eagerly anticipated Spargelzeit – literally “Asparagus time” --- is celebrated with festivals
galas and dinner parties starring the prized white spears sometimes called “edible ivory,” “white gold” or the “king of vegetables.” From ice cream to schnapps
Faux asparagus tips made from white chocolate are popular souvenirs
meals don’t get much better than her late mother’s traditional German pancakes served with fresh
steamed white asparagus in a nutmeg-dusted cream sauce topped with thin Black Forest ham
“It’s the best!” she declares
and adds: “It’s just a whole different taste than green asparagus.”
Other typical white asparagus accompaniments include Hollandaise sauce
May shares her late father’s fondness for another simple dish: a salad of fresh white asparagus and hard-boiled eggs seasoned with salt
She savors her culinary favorites whenever she returns to her hometown near Schwetzingen
southwest Germany’s sandy-soiled “asparagus capital” that’s celebrating the 350th anniversary of white asparagus this year
Cultivated in the famous royal gardens of Schwetzingen Palace as far back as 1668
the delicate white spears were served exclusively at court banquets
prompting spargel’s reputation as the “royal vegetable.”
harvest workers must “bow down” before each shoot in order to cut it out of the ground
her family’s fifth-generation backyard produce stand in Schwetzingen
It’s one of a designated handful in the region that cultivates white asparagus from the castle’s venerable “royal roots.”
I met the 86-year-old asparagus matriarch and observed the back-breaking effort required to grow
I also saw the joy it brings to its legion of fans – practically every German I met
Fackel-Kretz still goes to the family field twice each day
to dig into the dirt mounds and hand-cut the white asparagus stalks
other family members and three Polish workers who have worked the harvest for 20 years
And she notes with pride that her granddaughter
was Schwetzingen’s Asparagus Queen for eight years
White asparagus grows fast – nearly 4 inches on some days
who exclaims: “You can watch it grow!” On one especially productive day
her crew harvested 300 kilograms – 660 pounds – of white asparagus and hand-peeled about 6,000 stalks
You can tell it’s fresh when you rub two stalks together and hear them squeak
who notes that wrapping white asparagus in a wet towel will maintain freshness for up to three days
“When the end is dry it’s very old,” she says
And that’s the perfect time to enjoy a special delicacy that has excited German tastebuds for centuries
Susan Pollack is a Metro Detroit freelance writer
Schwetzingen is a key stop on the Baden Asparagus Route
an 85-mile journey by car or bicycle through the southwest Germany countryside
The town boasts a 124-year-old asparagus market on the Schlossplatz
complete with a highly-photographed “asparagus woman” bronze sculpture
historic photos and even a giant asparagus sand sculpture are all part of this year’s 350th anniversary celebration of white asparagus
Next year’s Spargel Festival is May 4; activities start April 27 when local dignitaries gather for the official annual “asparagus cutting.” Check germany.travel/en/leisure-and-recreation/scenic-routes/baden-asparagus-route.html or tourism-bw.com
Fat spears of white asparagus take a little longer to cook

2 tablespoons chopped fresh tender herbs (such as chives and/or tarragon)
Cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat
Transfer to paper towels to drain; let cool
cook asparagus in a large pot of boiling salted water until crisp-tender
cook white asparagus first to keep them from turning green.) Drain and transfer to a large bowl of ice water to cool
Gradually whisk in olive oil until emulsified
then whisk in vegetable oil; season with salt and pepper
Serve asparagus drizzled with vinaigrette and topped with eggs
DO AHEAD: Vinaigrette can be made 2 days ahead; cover and chill
Asparagus can be cooked 1 day ahead; cover and chill
A side dish or salad of blanched white asparagus and German Black Forest ham
basil and chives and an oil and vinegar dressing
4 ripe round or plum tomatoes skinned
4 large fresh basil leaves, shredded
8 slices wafer-thin German Black Forest ham
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
4 ounces rapeseed (canola) or vegetable oil
4 ounces German white wine or German apple vinegar or half of each
1 teaspoon German honey, optional
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Trim the bottoms of the asparagus stalks and peel with a vegetable peeler
Bring a large pan of salted water to a boil and drop in the asparagus
Simmer for 3 minutes and have a large bowl of ice water ready
Place immediately into the ice water and leave for 5 minutes
Slice the avocado and mix gently with a third of the dressing
Allow to stand for 10 minutes then drizzle with another third of the dressing and mix in the basil
Arrange 2 slices of ham on each of four large plates
Drizzle the last of the dressing over the asparagus and sprinkle over the chives
Season with coarsely ground pepper and serve
For dressing: This dressing is a good all-purpose recipe for green leaf
White asparagus with a raspberry vinegar dressing is topped with salmon and garnished with dill in this celebration of spring flavors
6 tablespoons rapeseed oil (canola oil)
10 oz salmon chunks smoked or canned
then add the asparagus and cook for 10-12 minutes
Divide the salmon into bite-size pieces and combine with the asparagus pieces
cover and chill the salad for about 30 minutes
Arrange the salad on lettuce leaves and garnish with fresh dill
A main dish of noodles with green asparagus and German ham with a creamy gouda sauce
1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper
2 ounces grated Gouda (German if available)
Cook the noodles according to instructions until al dente and drain
Cut the stems into 1 inch pieces and cook in boiling water
seasoned with salt and sugar for about 6-8 minutes
Chop the ham and lightly fry both the onion and ham in the canola oil
Pour into the pan and mix together with the asparagus
Carefully fold the pasta into the mixture and allow to stand for 5 minutes

The Rhine River is one of the most popular destinations for cruising in Europe
a historic German city located near the foothills of the Odenwald
My cycling group and I are pedaling toward Schwetzingen Palace
about six miles away from our ship docked along the Rhine
all my group mates are but a glimmer of silver hair in the distance
“Don’t worry,” the wellness instructor says sympathetically
He had stayed behind with me so I wouldn’t get lost
“Some of these older people have been cyclists for years.”
“They’re in such better shape than I am!” I say
Amawaterways’ Captivating Rhine itinerary takes cruisers through several exciting destinations including Cologne
which is known for its UNESCO-protected cathedral
It’s day five of AmaWaterways’ seven-night “Captivating Rhine” cruise
One of the newest ships in the company’s fleet
it offers two dining options (a main restaurant and the dinner-only Chef’s Table
But what distinguishes AmaWaterways from the seemingly endless array of Rhine River cruises is its wellness program and active excursions
It’s no secret that river-cruise passengers tend to be older
but this company is a go-to for those who like to start the day with vigorous bike rides and cap it off with a vineyard-side wine tasting
each ship has an onboard wellness instructor who organizes daily activities
Passengers can borrow bikes at no charge for use on land
ranging from a gentle cable car ride over vineyards to a Black Forest hike
I sat on a stoop enjoying a mango gelato after a long walking tour of Riquewihr
I had sweated my way down the Rhine for the past week
but it was exactly the kind of vacation I needed
whose mind is constantly racing with worries
staying active allowed me to be more present and connected—even when I was being shown up by people twice my age

The object of a “large-scale attempt to spy using drones” was the air base where the Ukrainian military is training on Patriot systems
“six security incidents” involving professional drones of unknown origin took place
the newspaper quotes from a confidential report submitted to the Ministry of Defense
“Investigative actions are being carried out on suspicion of espionage,” the report says
which hovered for several minutes with their lights on
such as attempts to divert the drones from their course or force them to land
Additional detection and jamming systems are now in place
In none of the six cases could the drone operator be found
and the Military Counterintelligence Service were involved in the search
Bundeswehr circles suspected that the drones could have been launched from ships in the North or Baltic Seas
The special anti-aircraft missile firing center is located in Schwetzingen
As reported earlier, drones have been repeatedly spotted over other military bases across Germany, including Ramstein
where meetings of the group for military support of Ukraine were held
Russia has been conducting hybrid operations in Germany for years
Since the beginning of the full-scale war against Ukraine

May 4, 2012 — Most people don't think of cheerleading when they think about the Army. This does not hold true for Erin Malapit, who graduates from the University of Virginia's College of Arts & Sciences May 20 after having been both a cheerleading captain and an U.S
Malapit, a biology major from Springfield
always knew she wanted to join the military
It's a family tradition – both of her grandfathers served in the Navy after they emigrated from the Philippines
After graduation and 20 weeks of training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri
Malapit will join the 18th Engineer Brigade in Schwetzingen
Malapit was born just an hour away from Schwetzingen
professor of military science in U.Va.'s ROTC program
classified Malapit as one of the top cadets in the country
saying that he has no doubt she will become an effective and important leader in her brigade
Malapit has met every challenge and exceeded every standard during her time in ROTC," he said
"She excels in the three areas we focus on – scholar
leader – and is a true role model and mentor for the underclass cadets in the battalion."
Malapit said the Army has helped her develop into a better leader and a better person
"The most important thing the Army has taught me is how to be a good person," she said
"The military brings selflessness out of people
It's truly a privilege to be part of a community so grounded in service
where I am constantly inspired by my peers' devotion to each other and the greater good."
Malapit said that the Army allowed her to see and evaluate her abilities
She explained that ROTC cadets are constantly rotated in leadership positions
and their leaders and peers have to give them feedback on their performance
she served as the cadet Command Sergeant Major for the Army ROTC program
a role she described as a type of "battalion mom," who acts as both a standards enforcer and mentor
She is responsible for keeping more than 80 other cadets in line and safe
Malapit said she works to foster a sense of community among the battalion
Malapit's cheerleading was prompted by a random occurrence
her mother was handed a cheerleading recruitment flyer at Kinko's one day
Since Malapit had recently quit playing soccer
her mother wanted her to still have some sort of physical activity in her life
cheerleading gives Malapit a chance to let loose
especially when she's tossed in the air during stunts
Malapit is also on the council of Student-Athlete Mentors
a group that works to make student-athletes role models and mentors in the U.Va
She and other mentors serve as peer educators
Children's Hospital and tutor at local elementary schools
the Life Skills Director in the Department of Athletics and an adviser to the Student-Athlete Mentor program
said he considers Malapit a "genuine promise of hope for the future," citing her ability to understand and lead others and her unbeatable work ethic as her outstanding attributes
I have an even stronger confidence in the future of our country's military being managed with wisdom
Malapit said she wants to squeeze out every experience she can from life
This is why she pursued involvements at U.Va
"I don't think I would have been satisfied unless I had left the University absolutely exhausted," she said
so special is that it challenges its students to take responsibility for their actions
to turn passion into agency and to take that sense of agency and make a positive impact."
Malapit said only having four short years at U.Va
gives meaning to students' time on Grounds
"Whether it was by cheering our team to victory on the sidelines
visiting a recovering child in the hospital
or ensuring that our cadets are worthy to lead our country's sons and daughters in the defense of our great nation
I can only hope that my passing through has left the University community a little better off," she said

UVA Breaks Ground on Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology
in addition to the Admiral V8 and the Diplomat V8 Coupé
“The charming setting and the beautiful cars make the Classic Gala Schwetzingen a unique experience for exhibitors and visitors”
“There could hardly be a better occasion to admire Opel’s luxury line-up from the 1960s
cars that stood out with their straightforward design
and offered the highest comfort for their time.”
“KAD”: The “Big Three” from Rüsselsheim
Admiral and Diplomat – aka “KAD” or “Big Three” – represented the Opel luxury class in the 1960s and ‘70s
extremely roomy and influenced by the contemporary American styling
With a length of 4.95 metres and a width of 1.90 m
the Opel luxury class also reached new dimensions
While the Kapitän became the best-selling German six-cylinder passenger car and the Admiral built on the success of the pre-war model with the same name
the Diplomat represented the top of the line
Opel – which has always stood for the democratisation of innovation – was the only German manufacturer to offer a complete product range at the time; from Kadett and Rekord
At this year's Classic Gala Schwetzingen
Opel will be showing the 1966 Diplomat V8 Coupé as well as the Admiral V8 from 1965
The Diplomat's 169 kW/230 hp 5.4-litre V8 powered the four-seater from zero to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds while the top speed exceeded 200 km/h
Hardly any other German-made car was faster
The Admiral with its range-topping 140 kW/190 hp engine was also notable for its two-speed “Powerglide” automatic transmission
a total of 55,876 Admiral A left the factory
of which only 623 featured eight-cylinder engines
This makes the Admiral V8 a rare collector's item today
The KAD trio in Schwetzingen is completed by a Kapitän from a private collector
4/8 PS “Doktorwagen”: Opel made early automobility affordable
Visitors to the Classic Gala can also admire an early automobile that made motorised mobility possible for all: the Opel 4/8 PS
Opel proclaimed the car as ideal for “Doctors
which earned it the nickname “Doktorwagen” (doctor’s car)
The pioneering vehicle was available for a low price of only 3,950 marks
paving the way for a broader section of the population to own their own car for the first time
The technical highlight was the four-cylinder “mono-block” engine cast in one piece
The Schwetzingen Palace park will open its gates to Classic Gala visitors from Friday, September 2 to Sunday, September 4, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Further information is available here.

Germans also know how to celebrate—whether at the legendary Oktoberfest
or at lesser-known wine and seasonal food festivals
Here are five German fests that are filled with great food
A six-day fest dedicated to the humble but irresistible pretzel
the Speyerer Brezelfest is held during the second week of July
and there’s also a colorful parade during which delectable pretzels are tossed into the crowds
and a running race (Brezelfestlauf) round out the event
Though the festival’s origins only date back to 1910
the town of Speyer has even older attractions: a famous Romanesque cathedral (Kaiserdom)
and synagogue ruins that are among Europe’s oldest
the pretty southwestern spa town of Bad Dürkheim hosts the world’s largest wine festival
The fest has been a tradition in Bad Dürkheim for more than 600 years
when local residents marketed food to pilgrims who annually made a spiritual journey to a nearby hilltop chapel
the event morphed into a larger—and more hedonistic—affair
More than 300 types of wine flow during the nine-day event
as well as flavorful white varietals like Riesling
It’s not just wonderful wine that’s on order here
As the festival’s German name implies (the word Würste translates to “sausages”) many hearty dishes make appearances on the menu
Be on the lookout for Bratwurst that are one-and-a-half-feet long
as well as steamed dumplings called Dampfnudeln
These popular dumplings can be sweet or savory
Sometimes they’re even served with a wine sauce—quite appropriate since you’re in wine country
Bad Dürkheim also dishes out old-fashioned fun in the form of live-music performances
you can explore the nearby German Wine Route (Deutsche Weinstrasse)
The area enjoys a moderate climate that nurtures not only grapes
Marry hundreds of thousands of pumpkins and a Baroque palace
and you have the delightful Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival (Kürbisausstellung Ludwigsburg)
This fun-filled event takes place every autumn
with the elegant Ludwigsburg Palace grounds transformed into imaginative scenes
While different themes determine the look of each year’s event
in keeping with Germany’s eco-friendly nature
Special events take place over the course of a month
a pumpkin variety show featuring samples from around the world
One of the largest pumpkins to date weighed in at more than 2,000 pounds
sign up in advance to participate in the pumpkin canoe regatta
You’ll need to hollow out a massive pumpkin
then paddle yourself through the palace’s ornamental pool
watch from the sidelines or simply feast on the festival’s many culinary specialties
There’s everything from pumpkin spaghetti and steaming bowls of creamy pumpkin soup to pumpkin juice and pumpkin quiche
You can also buy edible souvenirs like pumpkin pasta
and jam infused with pumpkin and other types of fruit
asparagus has been revered by everyone from the ancient Egyptians to the Greeks and the Romans
the French King Louis XIV sparked a renewed interest in asparagus
influencing the aristocracy in what is now the German state of Baden-Württemberg
An adoration for asparagus (Spargel) continues in parts of Germany today
with white asparagus being especially prized
this beloved “white gold” emerges in fields and on the menus of discerning restaurants
the asparagus is covered with a mound of soil
This is said to create a more delicate flavor.) At restaurants you’ll see asparagus dressed with butter or Hollandaise sauce
the elegant town of Schwetzingen—dubbed the Asparagus City (Spargelstadt)—plays host to the day-long Spargelsamstag
and you can devour the famed white asparagus
If you’d like to purchase a bundle of Spargel you can do so in town or from roadside stalls in the countryside
Schwetzingen boasts a salmon-colored palace as well as impressive gardens that date back to the 18th century
Time in Schwetzingen can also be paired with side trips to the university town of Heidelberg
or perhaps even a spa day in elegant Baden Baden
Oktoberfest is the granddaddy of German festivals
It takes place in Munich for 16 days in September and October
Munich’s mayor kicks off the world-famous event by tapping the first barrel of beer
a lively procession travels from the city to the fairgrounds
Horses pull carriages decked out with flowers
and the insignia of Munich’s big breweries
More than 1,000 people participate in this parade as brass bands play on
With more than 30 fest tents to celebrate in
Oktoberfest attracts millions of revelers each year
so it is wise to reserve seats in your preferred fest tent
To make your Oktoberfest experience even more memorable
You can find a Dirndl (traditional dress) or Lederhosen (leather pants with suspenders) at specialty clothing stores throughout the region
since Oktoberfest can be a rowdy affair (and beer spills are not uncommon) you might want to opt for lower-cost Bavarian apparel from a department store
