the Senate Armed Services Committee member all but held her nose when talking about the former Fox New anchor:
who had a “frank and thorough” conversation with the Defense Department pick on Wednesday
was asked on “America’s Newsroom” if she’s not ready to vote yes on Hegseth … She replied: “I think you are right.”
they want to make sure that any allegations have been cleared and that’s why we have to have a very thorough vetting process,” Ernst said
through the next month or so until we approach that hearing date.”
Beyond the implications for Hegseth, Ernst’s arms-length attitude toward one of Trump’s key nominees was interpreted as sign that the Senate would maintain its independence under the next administration
The Iowan was emblematic of the Senate conservatives from Trump country whose own elections predated Trump’s and who thus presumably had their own solid constituencies back home
Now Ernst appears to have experienced a real attitude adjustment about Hegseth, as the New York Times reported:
Only days after emerging from a private meeting with Mr
Hegseth sounding unconvinced about his fitness to lead the Pentagon
the first female combat veteran to serve in the Senate and a survivor of sexual assault
indicated that a second sit-down had allayed her concerns
And she suggested that a torrent of allegations against Mr
Hegseth that had put his candidacy in jeopardy — including sexual assault
public drunkenness and fiscal mismanagement — might not be disqualifying unless his accusers came forward publicly
“I appreciate Pete Hegseth’s responsiveness and respect for the process,” Ms
Ernst said in a statement after their meeting
adding that she had had “encouraging conversations” with Mr
Ernst has some additional “encouragement” in that direction from Trump supporters and advisers
signaled on Monday that she would not oppose Pete Hegseth’s bid for defense secretary
hinting at a turnabout after days of hectoring and threats by President-elect Donald J
Trump’s hard-right supporters who threatened political retribution if she failed to fall into line
The “hectoring and threats” were a national MAGA phenomenon, and included some voices from Ernst’s home state, as the Iowa Democratic Party observed with glee:
Iowan Bob Vander Plaats, who is the President and CEO of The Family Leader, posted: “Undermining his nomination is to be in denial of America’s clear voice in the November 5 election.”
Turning Point USA Founder Charlie Kirk and MAGA Republican and Fox News contributor Mollie Hemingway, who have a combined 5 million followers on X, have attacked Ernst for her views on who should serve in the military
Others are calling Ernst “spineless” and “worse than a RINO.” Even country music star John Rich has misgivings about Ernst, asking if there are any Republicans in Iowa who want to primary her in 2026
Iowans delivered Trump the largest margin of victory in the Hawkeye state since 1972
even after being told by the fools’ “gold standard” pollster that Trump would lose the state
politicians think they can ignore the voices of their constituents and entertain smears from the same outlets that have pushed out lies for years …
and powerful team to lead his America First agenda …
What we’re witnessing in Washington right now is a Deep State attempt to undermine the will of the people
We must not let Washington kill nominations before the Constitutional confirmation process even begins
I don’t think it’s a stretch to think that this kind of pressure helped generate Joni Ernst’s new tone in talking about the Pentagon nominee
whatever Trump himself is or is not saying or doing on behalf of his Cabinet nominees
his MAGA army online and all over the country is demanding a confirmation sweep by the Senate
They can afford a few defections from the likes of Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski
who rely on non-Republican voters to keep them in office
“independence” is just a term for self-sabotage
particularly so soon after Trump’s election win

This year (2023) is the 170th anniversary of the founding of Steinway & Sons
established the company in a rented loft in New York City
But the seeds were sown many years earlier with what has become to be known as the Steinway Kitchen Piano (though more accurately the Steinweg Kitchen Piano)
the Steinway brand may never have happened
Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg (he changed his name to Steinway when he moved to America) was born in 1797 in the small German mountain community of Wolfshagen
Heinrich was the youngest of twelve brothers and sisters
He had a fraught childhood suffering the deprivations caused by the Napoleonic Wars between France and Prussia
And during this time he lost his entire family
he joined the Black Brunswicks – a military regiment striving to rid Germany of Napoleon’s army
Steinweg actually fought at the legendary Battle of Waterloo and was commended for his actions
Whilst in the army Steinweg became skilled in woodworking and crafted various stringed musical instruments
On leaving his regiment he moved to Seesen (Lower Saxony
Germany) and became a full-time cabinetmaker
But his great passion had become musical instruments
but was fascinated by the booming newer generation of keyboard instrument — the Fortepiano
Steinweg made his very first piano in 1825
It was a small square piano which he gave as a wedding present to his new wife Julianne
But it was in 1836 that Steinweg finally completed his first grand piano
This instrument got its name from the fact that it was built in the kitchen of Steinweg’s Seesen home
but local regulations only allowed him to use it to repair instruments
He therefore secretly constructed his new piano “off-site”
It was what we today might call a “homer” project
The Kitchen Piano is an important instrument for various reasons
Obviously because it was the first “Steinway” grand piano
but also it featured many new design innovations that enhanced the instrument’s performance
From the days of Cristofori’s original instruments they had slowly evolved over the years
Steinweg made so many changes and improvements that his new piano can arguably be considered to be the prototype of the modern grand piano
Steinweg’s 1836 instrument was a 212 cm concert grand piano
He extended the length of the keys of the traditional keyboard and improved the action by using lighter hammers with a different type of leather tip
These enhancements allowed faster repetition and delivered improved dynamics and greater overall volume
Steinweg also changed the damping mechanism to a system he had encountered on an English square piano
The bridge was constructed as a single piece
Steinweg also increased the possible volume by applying more tension to the strings — this in turn required a stronger casework
the Steinway Kitchen Piano was meticulously crafted and represented “state-of-the-art” piano craftsmanship for that time
This was officially recognised at the 1839 Brunswick State Fair
Steinweg exhibited his new piano at the show and was awarded a gold medal for his endeavours
It was said that the Duke of Brunswick was so impressed by Steinweg’s grand piano that he ordered one to be built for himself
the Kitchen Piano did put Steinweg firmly on the map
subsequently built almost 500 pianos in Seesen
But in 1850 political upheaval and financial depression led Steinweg and some of his family to emigrate to America in search of better prospects
skill and luck (a strike at the Bacon & Raven piano factory)
He “Americanized” his name to Henry E
Steinway and in 1853 set up Steinway & Sons at 85 Varick Street
What happened next is for another time… but if you can’t wait

The original Steinway Kitchen Piano still exists. Steinway & Sons now own it, and it was housed at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, it is currently on loan to MIM (the Musical Instrument Museum) in Phoenix Arizona
and forms part of MIM’s special Steinway exhibit

Previous The International Stretto Piano Festival
The first Reform temple opened its doors more than 200 years ago in the town of Seesen
and political dignitaries passed under a chiming bell-tower and entered the sanctuary
The businessman and philanthropist who had founded this temple
delivered the sermon while draped in a black clerical robe
Standing behind a pulpit at the front of the sanctuary
the man who had also established an egalitarian
religiously pluralistic boarding school for 40 Jewish and 20 Christian children told the august assembly: "On all sides enlightenment opens up new areas for religious development
Reform Judaism spread through Europe and then to North America
Reform Judaism has now surpassed its 200th anniversary
I believe it is possible to identify three stages through which our Movement has evolved and to see the beginnings of a fourth
These stages pivot on a common theme: how our predecessors confronted two opposing tendencies in their search to feel a sense of belonging within the general culture
The universalist tendency stressed the common values and behaviors they shared with their non-Jewish neighbors
The particularist tendency stressed the more introspective features of Jewish identity that made them unique among the peoples of the world
The interplay between these two factors underlies each stage of our Movement's evolution
Even before the Seesen synagogue set Reform Judaism in motion
Napoleon had thrown open the doors of medieval ghettos
As Jews freely mingled with fellow Europeans
they were exposed to the cosmopolitan bustle of cities
the sophistication of theaters and opera houses
Determined to bring Jewish life into the modern age
the early German-Jewish reformers of the mid-19th century emphasized the universalist ethical teachings of biblical prophets
They no longer viewed ritual observance as ordained by God and inviolate
but as a means to reinforce the prophetic ideals of justice
they began to pray in unison and introduced a professional choir and organ to render their hymns
The rabbi led services covered in ministerial robes as bareheaded worshipers listened in solemn silence
when Reform Judaism spread to North America
the main Shabbat service shifted to Friday night
allowing Jews to pursue their occupations on Saturdays
in concert with many of their gentile compatriots
in this first stage of Reform Judaism's development-a period of adaptation to the wider gentile community-Reform Jews abandoned codes of diet
and ritual practices which set them apart from fellow citizens
These changes in Jewish practice were accompanied by a new theology
which also led to amendments to Reform prayer books
Jews had prayed for the coming of the Messiah
who would usher in a universal age of peace
and lead all Jews back to the restored Kingdom of Israel
where the Temple would be rebuilt and sacrifices once again offered upon its altars
The early reformers changed the focus of this national restoration to what they called the "Mission of Israel": the Jews' historic task to bring social justice to the world from within the lands where they lived
Now that the Jews of Europe or America had finally become prosperous
they had little desire to leave their "new homeland" for an uncivilized
swamp-ridden land halfway around the globe
They taught instead that "the Messianic Age," rather than the Messiah
Reform Jews worldwide celebrated its creation and rejoiced in its achievements
for the first two decades of Israel's existence
the Jewish State was a world away from the daily life of Reform Jews in Manhattan or Montreal
It would take an extraordinary event to bring Israel closer to home
It felt good to be Jewish-and to share one's Jewish pride with others
Jews were interacting confidently as equals with their non-Jewish friends
while at the same time spending more time and energy in Jewish pursuits
Reform's third stage manifested a complementary interplay between both universalism and particularism
like two weights swaying on a scale and eventually finding equilibrium
To address the increasing number of Reform Jews who married outside the faith
in the late 1970s the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (now Union for Reform Judaism) launched an ambitious and successful Outreach program
Interfaith families were welcomed to join Reform congregations and non-Jewish spouses were encouraged to consider taking courses on conversion
If the female partner decided not to choose Judaism
the 1983 CCAR resolution on Patrilineal Descent acknowledged Jewish identity through the father when the child was Judaically educated and identified as a Jew
cantorial solos were gradually replaced with new songs everyone could sing
many of them infused with a distinctly North American motif
Debbie Friedman's "Not By Might" became an anthem for youth
and songs by the Kol B'Seder duo Cantor Jeff Klepper and Rabbi Daniel Freelander such as " Shalom Rav" spread to synagogues and camps throughout the continent
This new music strengthened the sense of belonging to the Reform Movement: worshiping at your temple or far away from home
New services incorporated Eastern meditation techniques; others focused upon text study as a form of prayer
Judaism not only clothed Reform Jews with a distinct ethnic identity; it also became more personally meaningful for many
the Reform Movement was becoming increasingly aware that the trend toward individualism posed a threat to the institution of the synagogue
Many young Jews seemed to be saying: "My religion teaches values that are essentially no different from those held by the majority of my fellow citizens; and if the most important of those values is to live an ethical life
then why do I need the rest of the baggage
This would give me a much wider choice for a future marriage partner
now that Judaism can be an individual choice as well as a communal one
I can still express my ethnic Jewish identity without it becoming a barrier in my relationships
By choosing Judaism for myself-and which aspects of it I wish to practice-while at the same time allowing my partner to make his or her own choices
Reform Jews are in a paradoxical state today
most of the barriers that kept us from "fitting in" and "being like everyone else" have come down; on the other
our ancestral roots still nourish us and we want to preserve our differences
Our sense of belonging is becoming simultaneously wider and narrower
Our expression of universalism now embraces the entire world
for global culture has become increasingly homogenized: people from Toronto to Tokyo drink Coca Cola
and engage in instant technology-driven communication
our understanding of particularism has shrunk from peoplehood to self
one's personal identity was essentially defined through one or two primary groups to which one belonged-usually country and religion
identity is more fractionalized and complex
Each of these components make up our identity like pieces of a pie
identifying the Jewish piece of that pie or its importance among the other components has become increasingly difficult
What is the binding agent that connects us to the Jewish people
Our personal theological beliefs are far more divergent now than in stage one
and therefore connect us less strongly with Reform (or any branch of) Judaism
but nowadays ethnicity lacks the impetus it did in the second stage-perhaps
because today's synagogues have many more members who were not born into Judaism and cannot share the commonalities of cultural heritage
Loyalty to the Reform Movement may be waning among younger generations of Jews
who tend to dislike labels and prefer more fluid lifestyles
They may seek out the Jewish community to fulfill current needs
such as a lifecycle ceremony or the education of their children
rather than regarding synagogue membership as a lifetime commitment
Even the State of Israel no longer confers the sense of belonging it once did
We no longer respond instinctively to the "crisis mentality"-that either Israel is in danger and we must save her
or that Diaspora Jewry is vulnerable and only Israel can save us
our relationship with Israel has become more nuanced
as we have come to understand that the Israeli government-just like our own-sometimes makes unwise decisions
who hold a variety of perspectives about such policies
How Reform Jews confront the paradoxical nature of universalism and particularism will determine the character of the Reform Jewish future
To infuse Jews with a sense of belonging in this fourth stage
our Movement will need to develop a more flexible type of community
Even as we draw sustenance from members who make a lifelong commitment
it is incumbent upon us to also provide something of value for those just passing through
Nor can we wait for everyone to come to us; we also have to meet Jews wherever they happen to gather-restaurants
And we have to make better creative use of electronic media for communication and online study
one way to preserve tradition is to transform it
has been doing at every stage for the past 200 years
McGirr is being tasked by McQueen parent company Kering with turning a new page in the brand’s closely-studied story
McQueen is still synonymous with conceptual high fashion the same way Chanel is synonymous with luxury
and the iconoclastic founder’s subversive work continues to inspire and invigorate new generations of fashion designers and obsessives
McGirr’s debut was the most anticipated and scrutinized of the season
hands stuffed in the pockets of a long satin overcoat
“And I feel like my job is really to bring a new energy to that.”
Here’s what you need to know about his debut show
Courtesy of Alexander McQueenCourtesy of Alexander McQueenThere were a lot of scarily louche suitsLee McQueen
known for a precise silhouette that accentuated the erogenous parts of the body
channeling what he called “rough glamor” through leather overcoats kinkily bound tightly at the waist
and dangerous gray and white jackets paired with drapey trousers
He replicated the balance of McQueen’s silhouette—nipped midsections
powerful shoulders—with suits that were heavily structured around the upper torso but loose and casual through the leg
creating an image about “singular characters that have a very strong personality,” as he said backstage
while others wore the scowl of the last person you’d want to meet on such a dark
Courtesy of Alexander McQueenCourtesy of Alexander McQueenCourtesy of Alexander McQueenThere were also horse-hoof bootsMcGirr’s most striking design joins a long line of outrageous McQueen footwear
like the “armadillo” shoes famously worn by Lady Gaga
His contribution to the vertiginous archive is a series of boots with the shape and heft of horse hooves
apparently inspired by the indigenous Traveler people of his native Ireland
It remains to be seen if the hoof boots will be commercialized
but their viral potential puts the Tabi to shame—with horseshoes nailed to the soles
the models walked with a distinct clippity-clop
Courtesy of Alexander McQueenCourtesy of Alexander McQueenMcGirr thinks Lee McQueen was the “greatest designer that ever lived.”As he told Vogue’s Nicole Phelps
McGirr revers the larger-than-life fashion iconoclast
And he thinks McQueen’s rebel attitude and appetite for controversy feels particularly urgent today
“I feel like Lee McQueen’s message that he put out into the world is so relevant,” McGirr added backstage
because we live in a very polite world at the moment
and so his message is more relevant than ever.”
Courtesy of Alexander McQueenCourtesy of Alexander McQueenThere is a new logoSort of. McGirr is bringing back a logo originally sketched by McQueen, where the “c” lives inside the “Q.” The major change? It appears he’s quietly dropped “Alexander” from the logo. However a rep confirmed that the brand is still going by “Alexander McQueen.”
One model, shirtless under a diaphanous silk overcoat, carried a handbag that glowed with a sinister red light: the Alexander McQueen skull motif, rendered in glowering LEDs. Remember those infamous indie sleaze McQueen skull scarves? The noise around McGirr’s debut could foretell a Gen-Z revival of yet another kitschy aughts style touchstone.
Courtesy of Alexander McQueenCourtesy of Alexander McQueenThere were cars on the moodboardMcGirr’s father was a car mechanic. “I grew up talking cars with him, it was our weird connection with design, I suppose,” McGirr said. The Lamborghini yellows and glossy blues in the collection, he explained, were a nod to this personal history, and his way of introducing “a new way of looking at color” into the brand.
When the dramatic instrumental soundtrack faded into Enya’s “Orincoco Flow (Sail Away),” the crowd couldn’t help but smile. There we were in a concrete bunker, watching mean models careen down the runway in villainous fits. But as the Irish New Age legend’s ’80s hit looped over and over during the finale, the whole scene—and the clothes themselves—immediately felt so much less serious.

WATCH clips of Cunningham's and McCain's comments in the video players above and below
CINCINNATI – Conservative talk-show host Bill Cunningham is famous for smacking down his political opponents on WLW Radio
gave the caustic Cunningham a taste of his own medicine on a 2008 visit to the Queen City
had lived up to his promise to run a respectful campaign and Cunningham
complaining that McCain had thrown him “under a bus,” was promising to abandon the Republican candidate and support Democratic Sen
The occasion was a presidential campaign rally at Memorial Hall on Feb
Somebody – McCain’s campaign or the local Republican hierarchy – had recruited Cunningham to fire up the crowd before McCain’s speech
McCain wasn’t even in the hall yet when Cunningham took the stage and started spewing insults at the top two contenders for the Democratic nomination
Cunningham directed most of his venom at Obama
Chicago politician” and repeatedly referring to him as “Barack WHO-SANE Obama” – emphasizing Obama's middle name
It was the way Cunningham tried to ridicule Obama by suggesting he is a Muslim
"All is going to be right with the world when the great prophet from Chicago takes the stand
and the world leaders who want to kill us will simply be singing 'Kumbaya' around the table of Barack Obama," Cunningham said as he pranced around the stage surrounded by local Republicans
who was being touted as a potential running mate for McCain
all you are going to have in your pocket is change
the stooges in the media – the New York Times
ABC – at some point is going to peel the bark off of Barack Hussein Obama
McCain claimed later that he didn’t know what Cunningham was going to say and it wasn’t until both men had spoken that McCain’s aides told him what had happened
the traveling press corps figured they had their story
Then a McCain aide came out and told them the candidate wanted to talk to the group of them
“That person who was on the program before I spoke made some disparaging remarks about my colleagues in the Senate
"I have repeatedly stated my respect for Sen
Clinton and I will treat them with respect
I will call them Senator and have a respectful debate
"I regret any comments that may be made about these two individuals
Cunningham was gone and didn’t find out what McCain had said until the media – national and local – got hold of him an hour or so later
"John McCain threw me under a bus -- under the 'Straight Talk Express,' " Bill Cunningham told CNN
referring to the slogan on McCain's campaign bus
Cunningham told CNN that local McCain organizers had asked him to speak
“They told me to fire up the crowd … and give them some red meat,” Cunningham said
