The first comprehensive institutional tribute to the painter, sculptor, and draftsman Arie van Selm offers a cross-section of his creative phases from around 1980 until his sudden and unexpected death this year
The exhibition showcases the work of a world-traveling artist who
in the transition from the 20th to the 21st century
navigated between the expression of inner states and the observation of nature and the environment
It brings together all five types of his bronze-cast crows created since 2011 and presents a concentrated selection of paintings and drawings from 17 lenders
Arie van Selm learned to paint in Amsterdam
and Zurich before making the USA his adopted home
where he maintained a large studio until the end
where he worked on the models for his bronze crows I-V at the Noack art foundry

Arie van Selm's art was first exhibited at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt in 2015 in Studio Ost
accompanying the installation of his Crow II on the then still fenced-in forecourt as part of the Blickachsen 10 (Axes of View 10) exhibition
which had meanwhile been donated to the city of Darmstadt by a group of art-loving patrons
It is now on display once again as a loan from the Mathildenhöhe Institute
Particular attention is paid to Arie van Selm's early work
which was introduced to the German art scene by the former Galerie Sander in Darmstadt from the 1980s onwards
one can already see the artist using profiles of heads

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri soccer senior midfielder Leah Selm recently returned from a visit to NASA’s Launch Services Program Student Volunteer Experience
She reflects on her experience and how the program will prepare her for a future career in mechanical engineering
How did this opportunity come about with NASA
This opportunity came from the Momentum Institute
NASA was putting together a program for student athletes with unconventional schedules
and put together this week-long program for athletes who have to go back to school early to train
I was given the opportunity to interview for this position and then ultimately go to it
Why are you pursuing a career or major in mechanical engineering
I love solving problems and I’m really interested in design and innovation
I can tap into those aspects and find a career that I’d be happy in in the future
What did this opportunity teach you about your desired career
I was able to shadow different engineers at NASA and see a lot of the different projects they work on and sit in on meetings
I learned it’s a career I could see myself going into and I found how interested I was in space
and it’s an industry I want to be a part of in the future
What was the most surprising part for you or something you were impressed by
I would say the most impressive thing was watching a rocket launch
It was the first time I’ve seen one in person
I think watching it in real life puts into perspective how many different people have to work on it
and how crazy it is people can actually make it happen
We also got to tour a couple of different facilities and see a space shuttle and rocket in real life
Seeing them up close shows how large they are and it was really cool to see that
How will this opportunity benefit you post-graduation
This will benefit me in a lot of different ways
One way is the networking with professionals in an industry I want to be a part of in the future
Being able to connect and talk with them and hear their advice for my future career will benefit me
I think one of the main pieces of advice that stuck with me was from a program manager
They said “when an opportunity knocks
I think it tells you to take any opportunity and take a chance with it
because you never know what will happen and how it could benefit you in the future
from the other collegiate athletes that were there
I think I learned how special it is to be collegiate athletes and how intense our role is
we train a lot and we do a lot of hard things
We all have great mentalities and are very driven and hardworking
I think through being with different athletes in different sports
I learned how we can bring our sports into a professional career after college and how we can tap into that for the future
Why are opportunities like this one important for college athletes
I think it’s really important because we all spend a lot of time and energy in our sports
we’re going to have to find a career
So I think it’s important to set yourself up for success afterwards
was something specifically designed for student athletes
and it gave us an opportunity to get some real world experience in a career we could want to pursue
I think it’s important to take any opportunity you’re given and try things out
NASA’s LSP’s Student Volunteer Experience provided the funding for Selm’s experience along with seven other collegiate athletes

Missouri soccer star attends engineering internship with NASA before beginning her final season as a Tiger
Missouri soccer team captain Leah Selm’s prowess on the soccer field is second only to her prowess in the classroom
Selm is majoring in mechanical engineering on top of playing Division I soccer for the Tigers.
Louis started playing soccer while in kindergarten
Her older brother also played soccer and Selm said he’s her biggest inspiration
“He’s definitely someone I’ve always looked up to,” Selm said
so he’s kind of someone that inspired me to not only follow in his footsteps in doing a college sport
but to also pursue engineering.”
Staying close to home factored into her decision on where to attend college
the University of Missouri always seemed like home for Selm
She wanted to attend college close to her family
knowing they wanted to come support her every chance they had.
her dream was to play soccer for the Tigers — she achieved that
Along with being located a short distance from her hometown
Missouri has a strong engineering program that allows her to pursue that career path.
“I think the opportunity to stay home and compete for the state school that I grew up with is something that was really important to me,” Selm said.
math and science were always her favorite subjects
Selm aspired to have a career where she could be innovative and make a change in the world.
Selm had the opportunity to work at the John F
Students took part in their Student Volunteer Experience
which is a week-long internship designed specifically for students who are unable to attend typical internships because of other devotions – like athletes.
an institute that works with student athletes to help them grow their brand and further develop their careers outside of their respective sports.
“Student athletes are a vulnerable population because they’re constantly on the go and doing rehab,” Martinez said
She would go around the career fairs and ask about opportunities that were just a few weeks because she had to return for practice.”
Martinez has been working with Missouri student athletes to further their education opportunities since January 2023
Every student athlete who is planning on graduating has to meet with the institute
The SEC is one of the few major conferences that provides resources for student athletes to succeed not just on the field but also in their academics.
“What we do is really serving as a resource
but also serving as an opportunity maker,” Martinez said.
Martinez pulled the file on Selm and contacted her about applying for the position
The decision to apply was a no-brainer.
NASA has always been something that inspires me
so I think it was something I was really interested in,” Selm said.
After submitting the application form and accompanying essay
Selm interviewed for the position with NASA
She fit the bill for NASA’s ideal candidate.
was willing to learn and be coached and really wanting to put in the work,” said Martinez.
They chose three people from MU to participate in the internship
During her week at the Kennedy Space Center
Selm went to the Vehicle Assembly Building
shadowed engineers and had meetings with the program manager.
“I think my biggest learning experience was getting to meet with the program managers,” Selm said
“They were able to give us a lot of advice for our careers
and I think a big piece of advice they gave me was when an opportunity knocks
Selm is one of the captains of the team and leads by example
She became captain her sophomore year after coaches saw her shining in a leadership position.
“I think I’d kind of just found myself a role on the field of being a leader,” Selm said.
Selm’s favorite memory as a Missouri soccer player occurred during her sophomore year when Missouri beat Kansas
Missouri trailed 1-0 early before scoring twice in the second half to complete the comeback.
so there’s a lot of emotions on the line,” Selm said
Selm has successfully balanced playing Division I soccer while setting herself up for success for a future in engineering.
“I think there [were] some points where I didn’t know if playing college soccer was attainable
but I think just sticking with it and knowing that if you put your mind to something
you will be able to achieve it,” Selm said.
Selm is relishing her final year on the team and doesn’t plan on continuing to play soccer after she graduates
She is hoping to pursue a career in mechanical engineering
but she is also making sure to enjoy her final moments at Missouri.
“[I’m] just making sure I leave everything out on the field and doing everything in my power to have a successful season – making sure I’m continuing to lead through being a captain,” Selm said.

but only took one more shot in the first half
Missouri almost scored at the end of the first half with Keegan Good getting a last-second shot off right before the buzzer
Oklahoma controlled the ball for most of the first half
Both teams were even in the first half with three corners
but Missouri registered more in the game with nine to Oklahoma’s seven.
Missouri’s defense allowed 13 shots but only one goal coming on a penalty kick
Sophomore Kate Phillips started in net for the Tigers allowing one goal while making four saves.
Good followed up her first half chance with a goal in the 50th minute to double the Tigers’ lead
She fought off defenders before finding Good open at the top of the box
who then fired a shot into the top of the net
Selm then added to her game with her second goal of the game in the 59th minute
The senior captain totalled five points on the night
Oklahoma responded with a goal of their own off a penalty kick in the 66th minute

An Israeli drone on Saturday targeted a motorcycle on a road in the Marjeyoun district town of Majdal Selm, causing two casualties, the National News Agency said.
An Israeli tank meanwhile targeted the border town of Kfarkila with a shell as Israeli interceptor missiles exploded over Mays al-Jabal.
Hezbollah meanwhile announced that it responded to the Majdal Selm attack by launching suicide drones at Israeli forces north of the Yiftah barracks, causing “certain casualties.”
Earlier on Saturday, Hezbollah said it attacked the al-Baghdadi Israeli post with missiles.
Hezbollah, a Hamas ally, has traded regular cross-border fire with Israel since the Palestinian militant group's October 7 attack on southern Israel triggered the war in the Gaza Strip.
Nearly 450 people have been killed in Lebanon in more than seven months of cross-border violence, mostly militants but also more than 80 civilians, according to an AFP tally.
Israel says 14 soldiers and 11 civilians have been killed on its side of the border.

As to the rider killed in the continuing campaign of Israeli genocide aimed at eliminating the Lebanese race, Berri said it was the United Nations problem to solve. He refused to elaborate when asked how anyone can recognize members of the Lebanese race from any other racial group.

Offensive linemen don’t win many individual awards
has picked up several this fall after the end of his football career with the Pioneers
Perhaps the most meaningful was being named Northern Kentucky’s Offensive Lineman of the Year in December
given out earlier this month at the annual awards banquet hosted by the Northern Kentucky Football Coaches Association
a Highlands graduate who died of cancer in 2020
an all-state offensive lineman at Highlands
went on to be a standout at the University of Kentucky and returned to UK to coach the offensive line from 2013 until he died in 2020
he spent several seasons as head coach of Newport and Campbell County high schools
Selm signed a national letter of intent to play football for Kentucky on Wednesday
Selm has graduated early and will join the Wildcats program on Jan
Selm didn’t know Schlarman personally but is well aware of what he did in his career
“He’s left a legacy and being awarded that was a big boost for me.”
UK plays in the Southeastern Conference led by perennial national championship contenders Alabama and Georgia
“We’re really excited for him,” Simon Kenton head coach Roy Lucas Jr
I think everybody knows what UK and UofL (Louisville) mean to football in our state
What it means for kids from our state to go to UK and play in the SEC
The Louisville Courier-Journal named Selm a two-time first-team all-state honoree
He helped the Pioneers average 35 points and 219 rushing yards per game this season and was named Class 6A
He finished his career with 152 pancakes and is the No
6-ranked prospect in Kentucky’s Class of 2024 by 247Sports.com
Selm is rated an 87 on a scale of 100 by 247Sports
Eastern Kentucky was his first overall offer and UK was his second
“It’s great to know I’m getting to campus and going to work
How they see me developing as a player going into the next level
Selm has always been big for his size and quickly stood out when he began playing freshman football
Lucas and the Simon Kenton coaching staff moved him up to varsity in the middle of the 2020 season as a freshman
“He’s learning more about the game every day,” Lucas said
“We realized right away that he was different than most guys
He continued to work hard every year and he has continued to develop
He’s really been dominant on defense as well as offense
He continues to learn the game and mature.”
whose given name is Hamadoun after his grandfather
described his ability in an interview with ON3.com
“He immediately pancaked one of our defensive linemen that had been playing JV and varsity all year,” Frazier said
“You could just see the surprised look on that kid’s face when that happened
This kid has got something you don’t see every day…His athletic ability is unreal
He goes at every drill and attacks everything the way you want him to in a way to get better
I still don’t think he realizes how big and how strong he is yet.”
He was also a standout for Simon on the defensive line
he was fourth on the team in tackles with 59
including a team-high 15 tackles for loss and six sacks
he had 35 tackles and two sacks and anchored an offensive line that helped the Pioneers rush for 300 yards per game
Being coached and playing on both sides of the ball will help him when he plays offensive line against some of the top teams in college football
“He has a feel for both sides,” Lucas said
“He knows what it’s like on defense and what you’re trying to do on that side.”
Selm originally was recruited to play on the interior
Lucas said his best football is ahead of him
“He’s such a great athlete for his size,” Lucas said
He’s probably going to be able to gain 20 to 25 pounds and be just as athletic as he is
People don’t look at him and think he’s 280 pounds because he has an athletic body and he carries it so well
We think he’s going to put on weight which will help him at the next level

The Kentucky football program has landed another offensive lineman commitment in the 2024 recruiting class. Three-Star interior offensive lineman Aba Selm announced his commitment to the Wildcats Thursday morning on Kentucky Sports Radio
a Kentucky native from Simon Kenton High School in Independence
made his decision shortly after visiting Lexington for the Wildcats’ junior day on January 28
“I really do think Kentucky is a really great fit for me,” Aba Selm recently told KSR
“It’s a coach and staff that really understand me and I can work with them.”
Aba Selm is top-ranked player from the state of Kentucky according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. The three-star prospect is ranked as the No. 46 interior offensive lineman in the 2024 cycle.
“They’re a big O-line school,” Selm said. “I love the way their offensive line plays, especially the technique that’s used to teach their players and help them develop for the next level. It really would be a big part of my recruiting process. They’re lineman heavy up front.”
Selm shared with Matt Jones on KSR that ultimately his relationships with Kentucky’s coaches were the deciding factor.
“Really the staff there. I just have that great connection with them. With Coach [Zach] Yenser, [Vince] Marrow, they’re the guys you want to be around, help you develop, be the man you want to be after college. It’s not just about the NFL,” he said.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Aba Selm is unlike any player Roy Lucas Jr. has come across in more than three decades coaching football
Lucas, the head coach at Simon Kenton High in Independence, said the team knew what it had in Selm — a 2024 offensive line commit for Kentucky — almost immediately
the Pioneers called up Selm to the varsity team
he'd established himself as the team's best offensive lineman
"I've had a few skill kids here and there who could compete at the varsity level as freshmen," Lucas said
"But I've never coached a lineman who could compete at that level as a freshman."
Kentucky football recruiting: Here's where Wildcats coach Mark Stoops' 2024 class stands
Kentucky football roster breakdown: Ranking 5 players on verge of breakout season in 2023
Lucas has had his share of gifted players. Among the most notable: Charles Johnson
a wide receiver who played three seasons in the NFL (2014-16)
Yet Lucas believes Selm — who also plays defensive line
two sacks and three forced fumbles in 2022 — is better than Johnson was at this stage
"So I've been around a few kids who were very talented," Lucas said
"But I think Aba is probably at the top for me
One of the top prospects in the commonwealth and a consensus three-star recruit, Selm committed to Kentucky on Feb
It came less than a week after a visit to Lexington for the program's junior day
"I already was planning on committing to Kentucky
Why wait to get the '24 class started?'" the 6-foot-4
Growing up in a home filled with Kentucky fans
the opportunity to play for the Wildcats one day is a dream come true for Selm
Lucas is confident those feelings will be reciprocated
"And I just think UK fans are gonna really like this kid
I think he's gonna be somebody they'll really root for."
Looking ahead: Projecting offensive depth chart for Kentucky football this fall
the state's top-ranked player in the 2024 cycle
"I'm already picturing myself blocking for him
And Selm would like to see the class grow. He calls Willie Rodriguez
"my boy" and wants to be teammates in Lexington
The only question now is where Selm will play for the Wildcats
He originally was recruited to play on the interior, at either guard or center. But in a recent conversation Selm had with UK offensive coordinator Liam Coen
the coach said it's still to be determined
they're gonna try me out at all the positions."
He enjoys the one-on-one nature of the position
Forward thinking: Projecting defensive depth chart for Wildcats in 2023
There's reason to believe Selm might get his wish
He believes Selm has grown another inch — now closer to 6-foot-5 than the 6-4 listed on his profiles on various recruiting sites — and has room to grow
Lucas is confident that regardless of the position Selm mans for the Wildcats
he'll be successful — especially since he's still learning offensive techniques and fundamentals
from the conditioning standpoint," Lucas said
"He doesn't struggle because he's so athletic and he's in such good shape
I think once he gets around the college coaches and gets that daily coaching in that aspect

It is not known whether dietary guidelines proposing a limited intake of animal protein are compatible with the adoption of circular food systems
we compared the effects of circularity on the supply of animal-source nutrients in Europe with the nutritional requirements of the EAT-Lancet reference diet
We found the two to be compatible in terms of total animal-source proteins but not specific animal-source foods; in particular
the EAT-Lancet guidelines recommend larger quantities of poultry meat over beef and pork
while a circular food system produces mainly milk
Compared with the EAT-Lancet reference diet
greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by up to 31% and arable land use reduced by up to 42%
Careful consideration of the feasible substitutability between animal-source foods is needed to define potential roles of animal products in circular human diets
Example shown represents the EL Circular Wholegrain Fixed scenario
All flows are in grams fresh matter per human capita per day except grass which is in grams dry matter (DM) per human capita per day
Dashed line indicates flow of slaughter waste back to co-product
Our analysis revealed that animals exclusively fed LCB were unable to provide the combination of meat
eggs and fish recommended in the EAT-Lancet dietary guidelines
largely due to an insufficient quantity of high-quality LCB
the reference diet derived from the EAT-Lancet dietary guidelines contained 71 g of meat and fish
250 g of milk and 13 g of eggs per capita per day
possible to fulfil the ‘total’ recommendations by adjusting the share of meat and fish while respecting the healthy range
while the healthy range is 0–14 g pork per capita per day
were limited in their ability to upcycle all types of LCB and mainly required the co-products from refined grains
This creates a trade-off between consuming healthy wholegrains or producing healthy white poultry meat and eggs
On this graph ‘100%’ is equal to the recommended daily intake in the EAT-Lancet dietary guidelines
Our results showed that all EL Circular scenarios increased the supply of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)/docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
vitamin B12 and protein compared to the EL Reference
The supply of calcium and energy was only increased compared to the EL Reference in the EL Circular Wholegrain Potential scenario
On this graph ‘100%’ refers to the daily average nutrient requirements outlined by EFSA (see Supplementary Information)
Nutrients are shown from animal-source food (solid fraction) and plant-source food (shaded fraction)
Total daily dietary nutrient supply includes the solid and unshaded fractions
GHG emissions (kg CO2e capita per year) and protein intake from animal-source food (g per capita per day) of the EL Circular scenarios compared to the GHG emission results calculated by the EAT-Lancet Commission for its reference diet (red dot)
Range indicates uncertainty in GHG emissions
Pie charts indicate midpoint (default) GHG emissions and contribution of each GHG (N2O and CH4)
Cropland use (hectares per capita per year) from the EL Reference diet (which is an estimate for the entire globe
calculated by the EAT-Lancet Commission) compared to cropland and grassland use in the EU-27 + UK for the three EL Circular scenarios
Including natural grasslands could further increase the output of animal-source food
results in by-products such as wheat bran and wheat germ if wheat is consumed in a refined manner
as recommended in the EAT-Lancet dietary guidelines
vegetables and fruits would be other examples; if potatoes
their peel can be collected and used as animal feed
The above illustrates that although it is important to optimize essential nutrients from animal-source food
following upper limits of dietary guidelines is essential to avoid dietary-related diseases
beef from an environmental perspective due to their favourable feed conversion ratio
Willett et al.’s assessment is based on impact intensities (for example
GHG emissions per kg of food product) calculated for the current system; it was not considered whether the feed for broilers would also have been suitable as food for humans
or whether the area on which it was grown would have been suitable to grow food for humans
Our analysis clearly shows that as soon as we move towards a circular food system
and hence restrict the role for animals in converting LCB
This has consequences for any dietary guidelines (local or national) that aim to reduce environmental impacts
This does not mean that broilers cannot play a role in circular food systems
but it demonstrates that the broilers of today are less suited to convert LCB
This stresses the importance of adapting future breeding goals and feeding strategies towards the ability of animals to utilize LCB
This is essential because our results showed that animals can reduce their environmental impact (and the impact of the entire food system) if they increase their efficiency in converting LCB into healthy food
The nutrient content of food waste is highly dependent on the food consumed and discarded
a weighted average based on the amount of food consumed in the human diet and the proportion wasted
By combining these products into one mix the feed value in terms of energy and protein of higher-quality waste products (for example
grains) is diluted by lower-quality waste products (for example
Expanding the model employed to separate streams of food waste may increase the amount of animal-source food produced due to a greater availability of high-quality LCB
Further expanding the optimization model to include plant-source food production within the EAT-Lancet diet could offer further opportunities to reduce GHG emissions and land use
more circularity principles could be captured
including returning nutrients in manure and crop residues to the soil
Applying alternative objective functions (for example
minimizing GHG emissions while meeting the nutrient requirements of the human diet) could also influence the animal production systems selected
with associated increases in GHG emissions per tonne of product
but technological developments may also increase nutrient-use efficiencies and thereby play a compensatory role
We demonstrated that feeding LCB to animals has the potential to reduce GHG emissions and land use
Our results showed that the quantity of animal-source protein in EAT-Lancet dietary guidelines could be met
but that the precise animal-source food composition of the EAT-Lancet dietary guidelines could not be met by only feeding LCB to animals
Dietary guidelines recommend poultry meat over beef and pork
whereas in a circular food system mainly milk
Careful consideration of the feasible substitutability between animal-source foods is urgently needed to define the role of animal products in the human diet
In this way the circularity principle of only feeding animals with LCB can be integrated into healthy and environmentally sustainable diets to further reduce environmental impacts
This process was performed for each of the EU-27 + UK countries
The objective of the model is to maximize animal protein output from a given availability of animal feeds while meeting the nutritional requirements of the animals
Livestock and farmed fish were exclusively fed co-products
grassland resources and animal by-products
co-products and animal by-products could be traded between EU-27 + UK countries
while food waste and grassland must be used in the country in which it is produced
The availability of co-products and food waste was set by the EAT-Lancet reference
and it was assumed grassland could only be consumed by ruminants
Our analysis only included managed grassland due to the uncertainty in quantity and quality of natural grasslands in Europe
Capture fisheries produce fish for human consumption and fish by-products (for example
fish meal) which can be fed in the animal systems
harvested fish in tonnes of fresh fish) were limited to the maximum sustainable yield
The only contribution to land use from livestock was the grassland used as feed for ruminants
Other livestock systems were considered landless or had a very small
negligible land use because livestock are fed exclusively LCB
Nitrogen excretion was calculated by subtracting nitrogen retained in meat/milk/eggs from nitrogen intake
and summed with plant-source food emissions (see next section) to calculate total GHG emissions
Results were given in GHG emissions per diet per capita per year
Processing of crop into edible food products and food waste along the supply chain (LCB from the EAT-Lancet diet) were then considered to calculate GHG emission intensities and land use per kg of plant-source food consumed

When students in Denise Selm's business education class at Richmond High School entered her classroom on Feb
they didn't know that the day's lesson would stray from the standard course materials
But they probably realized it wouldn't be a typical lesson when they learned they would be playing a game of catch
It was the day's guest speaker, Tim Scales -- a senior lecturer at Indiana University East -- who led the group in an exercise that resembled a game of "hot potato" with several large cotton balls
The activity was a part of a larger "crash course" on the importance of handwashing -- as well as the economic impact of diseases such as the common cold and COVID-19
but the balls -- dubbed "microballs" -- were covered in a substance only visible under a blacklight designed to simulate the spread of germs
that occur as people touch objects in the course of their day
Scales brought out a blacklight and a handwashing station
and students were asked to clean their hands until the substance was completely gone
Many students were surprised at the amount of handwashing required to clear the glow-in-the-dark "germs."
"At the start of the pandemic, I was watching the news like everyone else and they kept saying 'Wash your hands, wash your hands,'" said Scales, who is also director for the Center for Entrepreneurship and the Center for Economic Education at IU East
"I started to think about how we could help teach people to do it properly."
Scales' centers have helped expose approximately 5,000 to 6,000 grade schoolers across Wayne County to handwashing education activities
The exercise in Selm's classroom is the next phase of the project
which will bring handwashing education to the city's high school students
The project's impetus is educational as well as economic. According to a well-known analysis, the U.S. expends over $40 billion each year on the common cold due to factors such as missed work or school
the cost of over-counter medicines and visits to doctor offices
the cost of COVID-19 has been far greater," said Scales
The startling financial impact of spreading germs is also the inspiration for the project's name
To get the lesson from the campus to the classroom
Scales has drawn upon a deep network of contacts in the local school system
Many teachers who will deliver the lessons are familiar with Scales from his centers' past role in certifying local business teachers in the community
are former students who've stayed in touch after taking one of his classes as an undergraduate at IU East
"I've known Tim about 20 years," said Selm. "In addition to being a former student, I've worked with him on several programs at IU East, including co-teaching the Business Opportunities for Self-Starters Program at IU East
where we traveled to help introduce the program internationally in 2009
He's also a regular guest speaker in my classroom
I felt this lesson is a great hands-on experience that can show students the results of their choices and the consequences related to their choices."
Scale's assistant during the presentation in Selm's class was Jake Necessary
a student at Richmond High who is currently interning at IU East under Scale's mentorship
Scales said Necessary played a key role in adapting the activity to a high school audience
"We've worked hard to get this lesson into hands of the right people," added Scale
who's also delivered the lesson to grade school students.
He has also brought the handwashing stations to other local events
The stations include not only the glow-in-the-dark "germs" but also a large plastic tub with googly eyes
designed to appeal to the younger students for whom the project launched
"I've seen kids run back to the sink five or six times to get all of the 'germs' off their hands," he said
He said that many schools that delivered the lesson choose to integrate it into existing activities
with handwashing occurring everywhere from the school library to the nurse's office
Scales or an assistant -- such as Carter Cook
an undergraduate previously involved to the project -- drops off the handwashing materials at a school's principal's office as part of an extended loan
is now helping deliver the lessons in high schools
Scales is eager to see how older students react to the lesson
He's also interested in integrating more economics into the exercise so students can grasp the clear connection between staying physically healthy and economically healthy
"COVID-19 has meant we've had to be extremely flexible working with the schools," said Scales
"Our goal is simply to provide the materials and train whomever is able to deliver the lesson
We've done dozens of Zoom calls with principals
Everyone's always very excited about the exercise
it was something people could really grasp onto
Everyone understands an act as simple -- and surprisingly powerful -- as washing your hands."
