VfB Stuttgart preview: Hosts look to secure survival | OneFootballBulinews
PauliThe hosts are in 14th place with 31 points
six points clear of the 16th-placed relegation playoff spot with three games remaining
The clean sheet was their first in five matches
and it highlights their solid defensive record
with the third-best defensive record in the Bundesliga
Head coach Alexander Blessin’s side will secure survival if they win and 16th-placed Heidenheim fail to beat last-placed VfL Bochum on Friday
They will also remain a Bundesliga team if they avoid defeat and Heidenheim loses
St Pauli are unbeaten in their last four matches
with their only loss in the past seven coming from a narrow 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich on March 29th
They are also undefeated in their last three home outings
but they have been inconsistent at Millerntor-Stadion overall
with seven losses and three draws in their last 12
St Pauli will be without midfielder Conor Metcalfe
Blessin will also be without Jackson Irvine and James Sands
Carlo Boukhalfa and Eric Smith are expected to start in midfield behind forwards Noah Weißhaupt
although attacker Simon Zoller is also injured
With centre-back Karol Mets and goalkeeper Sascha Burchert still recovering from injuries
Nikola Vasilj may start in goal behind central defenders David Nemeth
dominated attacking metrics against Heidenheim
creating nearly two xG and two big chances
while also preventing their opponents from registering any shots on target from inside the box
However, head coach Sebastian Hoeneß will be concerned by their defensive fragility, with Stuttgart conceding seven goals in their last three matches, despite facing just over three xG. Die Schwaben lost 1-0 to St Pauli in the reverse fixture on December 21
although they had won six of the previous seven encounters between the two sides
Stuttgart’s recent Bundesliga form has been worrying
with only one win in their last 10 matches and six defeats
they have shown more resilience away from home
and losing just one of their last five matches on the road
Stuttgart will be missing forwards El Bilal Toure and Justin Diehl
Enzo Millot is not expected to return until mid-May
With centre-back Dan-Axel Zagadou also ruled out
Finn Jeltsch and Jeff Chabot are expected to feature in the heart of Stuttgart's defence

The Boys in Brown gave their all against a decent Stuttgart side and fought with passion after going down to ten but they eventually succumbed to a late winner after 90 incredibly emotional minutes
the defeat won’t knock the team off their stride and they go to Frankfurt next week determined to get the result that will secure their top-flight status for another year
Head coach Alexander Blessin: “We were well in the game
We closed down the spaces well and had some good turnovers that led to opportunities on the break
but then we hit too many long balls and neglected the option to play the ball out from the back
We were too spread out for the second balls
which meant we had less control of the ball
We were more focused on keeping our defensive shape
At half-time we wanted to change our build-up slightly and play out from a flat back four
We pulled Philipp Treu into the double six which worked well in the beginning with one of two chipped balls
Today I saw a team who defended with grit and gave their all
but it was OK and could have been enough for a point
A lot of the 50-50 challenges were given against us and the emotions in the stands began to boil over
We’ll be angry about for a bit now but tomorrow the focus will turn to Frankfurt.”
Eric Smith: “You obviously feel hard done by when you concede so late and you have a penalty and a red card given against you
Niko saved our bacon as he has done so often this year and the longer it stays 0-0
They have some very good attacking players and when the ball falls at their feet
We didn’t reach our peak today and were simply not good enough
The referee blew up lots of things when we were trying to gain some momentum early on
which led to lots of interruptions and the game couldn’t flow
The defeat is hard to take but we have two cup finals left and we’re looking forward to them.”
We performed well and we work hard every week
Defensively we set our stall out very well
We knew we’d face a wave of attacks and it got tougher and tougher
someone else has to help out and is then pulled out of his position
The game didn’t start well for us when Elias got the injury
We have to pick ourselves up again and go again next week
Today we take from the game that we need to stay calm and have belief in our work.”
Sebastian Hoeneß (VfB Stuttgart head coach): “It was an open game early on but then we seized the initiative and had lots of control
Their long balls really hurt us at the beginning
Obviously I would have preferred to go in at half time in the lead but then an excellent counterattack led to the penalty and the sending-off
It was a tough situation for us because we still couldn’t take the lead even from the penalty spot
We had a few chances and then we got the all-important goal
The hosts are in 14th place with 31 points
limiting them to just one big chance.
having conceded only 36 goals this season.
Blessin will also be without Jackson Irvine and James Sands.

FC St. Pauli captain Jackson Irvine will undergo surgery on his left foot in London on Tuesday and will therefore be sidelined for the next few months.
Irvine last played for the club at Holstein Kiel on 12 April before a stress reaction in his left foot ruled him out of action. After deliberations between the medical department, club officials and the player himself, the decision was taken to treat the injury surgically. The subsequent rehab procedure will take several months to complete.
We wish Jackson all the best for the intervention and the fastest possible recovery!

Drama at St
Pauli after Woltemade's golden goal for Stuttgart | OneFootballBulinews
After Heidenheim's draw against Bochum on Friday night, a win for St. Pauli against Stuttgart would've given them their ticket to the Bundesliga for the upcoming season
wanted to finally get back some momentum before their DFB cup final in a few weeks
Here is a rundown of the hectic matchup between the two sides:
1st half:The game started off quite hectic with both teams using counter attacks as their method of attack. Stuttgart however, visibly lacked some confidence, with St. Pauli having the better chances of the two sides
Sinani was the first player to get off a well placed shot in the 9th minute. After that, Stuttgart became the better side, dominating in ball posession and passes - but St. Pauli chances were still more dangerous
The game got even more intense in the second half - and the minutes 55 to 60 were the most stressful so far:
Pauli's Siebe Van der Heyden blocked a shot from Nick Woltemade with his hand
The referee corrected this initial decision thanks to the VAR and awarded Stuttgart a penalty - Van der Heyden had to leave the pitch after receiving his 2nd yellow card of the game
Woltemade however, wasn't able to put his team in front - goalkeeper Vasilj showed a great save to keep a clean sheet. Still 0-0 between St. Pauli and Stuttgart after 61 minutes
Nikola Vasilj slowly turned into the man of the match after saving Woltemade's penalty and good shots from Chris Führich and Maximilian Mittelstädt. St. Pauli gave their all to hold the draw for as long as possible
the pressure got too high: Woltemade finally got his goal
after finishing a good counter attack by Stuttgart
The game ended with some drama: Vasilj got into an argument with the referee and was booked twice in the process - he had to leave the pitch
just like his teammate Van der Heyden in the 1st half
Rightback Saliakas ended up in goal for the final seconds of the game and it was Stuttgart who were able to secure the 3 points

Pauli lost by the only goal at home to VfB Stuttgart in front of a packed Millerntor on Saturday afternoon
In a high-octane encounter the Boys in Brown were reduced to ten when Siebe Van der Heyden was dismissed on 57
The visitors finally capitalised when Nick Woltemade hit a late winner before Nikola Vasilj was sent off for two bookable offences in the fifth minute of time added on
Head coach Alexander Blessin intended to make one change – Elias Saad for Noah Weißhaupt – to the side that drew 1-1 at Werder Bremen
but Saad picked up an injury during the warm-up and so Weißhaupt started
Stuttgart’s starting lineup featured three adjustments from the 1-0 home defeat against Heidenheim
Jamie Leweling and Nick Woltemade coming in for the injured Leonidas Stergiou plus Fabian Rieder and Ermedin Demirović
With Heidenheim being held to a scoreless draw by VfL Bochum the previous evening
the Boys in Brown went into the game knowing a win would secure their Bundesliga status for another season
Blessin’s charges fashioned the first big chance with just 35 seconds on the clock when Danel Sinani threaded the ball through for Weißhaupt on the break and his toe-poke from eight metres was saved by Stuttgart keeper Alexander Nübel
the unmarked Pascal Stenzel was allowed to shoot from the edge of the box at the other end
but Philipp Treu dived in to make the block
fans and teammates alike were celebrating Treu as if he had just stuck the ball in the net when Chris Führich bore down on goal and pulled the trigger from just inside the box
but the No23 slid in to make a fantastic last-ditch block
Fin Jeltsch was unable to clear his lines following a long ball forward
allowing Sinani to have a pop from 25 metres
but the ball dipped and curled a whisker past the angle of crossbar and post
Stuttgart’s response was not long in coming when Jamie Leweling won the ball on the right and teed up Deniz Undav
who found himself in too much space in the middle
Hauke Wahl was able to block the shot in the nick of time
Woltemade headed a Maximilian Mittelstädt free-kick two metres over the bar
After the bright start by both sides it remained a high-intensity affair
In the 18th minute the visitors broke quickly when Weißhaupt lost possession and Woltemade and Undav played a one-two into the penalty box
where the former set his sights on the bottom left corner
but Nikola Vasilj responded brilliantly to keep it at 0-0
Morgan Guilavogui was first denied a shooting opportunity by Jeff Chabot and then threw himself in the way of a Mittelstädt effort at the other end
Vasilj had no problems dealing with a long-range effort from Führich
who then did manage to get the ball past Vasilj from a tight angle but couldn’t find the net
The tackles continued to fly in and if anything the intensity increased
In the two penalty areas it was much more sedate
Noah Weißhaupt was denied by Alexander Nübel with just 35 seconds on the clock
Both teams emerged unchanged for the second period and the visitors carved out the first chance a couple of minutes in when Woltemade shrugged off a challenge outside the area to send Undav on his way and the Germany international fired just wide of the right-hand post
Stuttgart enjoyed more of the possession but the Boys in Brown offered fierce resistance and continued to play some decent football
With neither side prepared to give an inch
there was still plenty of fire in the direct duels and it wasn’t always fair
Blessin’s men registered their first chance in the 54th minute following a free-kick
Stuttgart were unable to clear the danger and the ball fell to Sinani
who met it first time but was unable to keep his effort on target
Five minutes later there was uproar at the other end when the visitors combined their way brilliantly into the penalty box and Woltemade’s goalbound effort struck Siebe Van der Heyden on the arm as he attempted to get a block in
Referee Florian Exner had another look at the situation in the review area before announcing his decision to the crowd – a penalty for handball and a second yellow for Van der Heyden
Woltemade took the spot-kick himself and was denied by Vasilj
who then kept out the rebound effort from Atakan Karazor to send the Millerntor into raptures
For all the excitement at the penalty save
the Boys in Brown were left with over half an hour to fend off a free-flowing Stuttgart side a player short – a challenge at the best of times
Blessin responded by introducing Oladapo Afolayan for Noah Weißhaupt
The visitors had the next big chance through Führich following a pass from Undav
He had all the time in the world to pick his spot and went for the bottom left corner
but Vasilj got down quickly to his right to turn the ball round the post for a corner
which was hardly a surprise in the circumstances
but the Boys in Brown continued to defend with passion and every defensive action drew the plaudits of the home crowd
In the closing stages Robert Wagner came on for Carlo Boukhalfa
Moments later a ripple of excitement went round the ground when the Boys in Brown burst forward via Guilavogui
The Luxembourg midfielder tried to wriggle his way through traffic but was crowded out by Karazor when a quicker finish would have been the better option
Vasilj clawed away a Woltemade header that was directed towards the bottom left corner and then defused a shot from Mittelstädt – there was simply no way past him at this stage
three minutes before the end of regulation time
Stuttgart set up camp in the penalty box and Woltemade eventually found the bottom left corner from eight metres
This time there was nothing Vasilj could do
The Boys in Brown threw everyone forward one last time but were unable to ward off the defeat
Vasilj pulled off another save to deny substitute Ermedin Demirović in the fourth minute of time added on but then protested too vehemently to the referee when the visitors took their time taking the corner and was dismissed for two bookable offences in quick succession
And though the heads went down after the final whistle
the players received a warm round of applause from the fans after a performance full of passion
Red cards (two yellows): Van der Heyden (foul 38’ and handball 57’)
VfB Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß took his seat in the mixed room as he and the journalists prepared for his press conference ahead of their visit to St.Pauli this weekend
Hoeneß issued a squad update and analysed their upcoming opponents
"Leonidas Stergiou has injured his foot and will be out
Justin Diehl took a blow to the back of the head and is currently undergoing concussion protocol
"St.Pauli is a very well-organized team that doesn't make it easy for the opponent to get in front of their goal
We have to try to pose problems for them throughout all phases of the game," he added
Hoeneß went on to say how he and his backroom team regularly look at match data
however it doesn't always explain results or outcomes
He also spoke out against hateful online criticism of his players after last Friday's 1-0 loss to Heidenheim
we're giving away too many leads at the end
But there are also enough games where the data shows that things could have gone differently
it wasn't always clear why we won the games
it's [online abuse] part of it and has its dark sides
It's an anonymous area that feels like it has no boundaries
I can't understand why these boundaries are regularly crossed – how some people even attack families
I hope my players don't have to read that too often," Hoeneß noted.
Pauli entertain DFB Cup finalists VfB Stuttgart on Saturday (15.30 CET)
head coach Alexander Blessin took questions from the media at the pre-match news conference
...the injury situation and the loss of Jackson Irvine: “We’ve varied the workload for Philipp Treu and Manolis Saliakas this week
Everyone’s available apart from Jackson Irvine
The diagnosis of the club doctors was clear and we had to make a decision
There were two options – conservative or surgery
Jacko’s had the operation and now the focus is on his recovery
He has a clear rehabilitation plan and we’ll see how long it takes
We might be able to say more in a month’s time.”
It’s important not to lose focus now so as to take the final step
For me it’s important to make clear to the lads that they need to be clear in their minds and not veer off to the left or right.”
...Friday night’s game between Heidenheim and Bochum: “I don’t know if I’ll watch it yet
When my wife has watched our opponents play
so we’ll have to see how we play it (he grins)
Maybe I’ll put the minute-by-minute updates on
we’ll keep an eye on it but what we do on Saturday is what’s important.”
...opponents Stuttgart: “They had a bit of a sticky patch
but when you look back at the performances
you see the incredible quality they have in the team
They’ve had some bad luck in recent weeks and we’re hoping their minds are already on the cup final
Sebastian Hoeneß will insist that they don’t dish out any presents
They’ll be determined to get back on track in order to prepare for Berlin and they won’t give the game away
They haven’t done that in any of the last few games
They dominated against Heidenheim and had the better opportunities but no luck in front of goal
...means to unlock a team who dominate the possession: “We have to find the same balance as we have recently
We had some excellent spells of possession against Leverkusen and Bremen
and the quality of the first and second touch was good
We’ve come up from the second division and I think we gave a good account of ourselves on the ball in both games
The lads have become more confident in their way of doing things as the season has unfolded and the aim every time is to ensure that’s the case over 90 minutes
gegenpressing and possession requires not only a high degree of running ability but also mental clarity
...the approach to the game: “We want the same as in the last few games
We’ve gone on a run with some good performances and good results
We know the constellation and want to take the final step now
We’ll keep an eye on Friday’s game but we have to do our homework and we’ll get everything ready to put in a good performance and get the points we need
We need to maintain our focus and we’re determined to win the game.”

St. Pauli vs. VfB Stuttgart preview: Hosts look to secure survival
A host of Bundesliga clubs are interested in St.Pauli’s Marwin Schmitz
VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig have made approaches to the 18-year-old
it is believed that Schmitz is attracted to the prospect of signing for Juventus and developing his career in Italy
The defensive midfielder is yet to make an appearance for St.Pauli’s first team but has featured regularly in the Regionalliga Nord.
Pauli supporters have raised over $29.1 million (€27 million) for a majority stake in the Bundesliga club's stadium after taking part in German soccer's first fan cooperative
The Hamburg-based club said Tuesday more than 21,000 people joined the fundraising cooperative after a near five-month subscription period ended at a minute to midnight the night before
Pauli said there had been a "huge rush" of people buying shares to be part-owners of the Millerntor Stadium in the final hours
They each spent $917 (€850) for each share they bought, with $108 (€100) of that going on fees and contributions. Each purchase entered the buyer in a draw for prizes including a dinner with team captain Jackson Irvine
Pauli in 2003 when the club was in financial difficulty
was among the new stakeholders buying shares
"The cooperative will open up new possibilities for FC St
Pauli," commercial director Wilken Engelbracht said
"By acquiring a majority stake in the stadium
the club will be able to reduce its financial liabilities much quicker than planned."
The cooperative's board of directors still has to process outstanding orders and review the figures before acquiring the majority stake in the stadium
The final results of the subscription phase and the next steps are to be presented to members in May
with the cooperative's first general meeting scheduled for June
Pauli was promoted back to the Bundesliga as second-division champion last season
The team is currently three points clear of the relegation zone with seven rounds remaining
"We now want to use the momentum from the subscription phase to achieve our next big goal
and to achieve Bundesliga survival," club president Oke Göttlich said

His team continued to struggle to create chances
but in the 71sst minute Saad went to ground in the box under a challenge from Werder captain Marco Friedl
only for referee Tobias Reichel to wave play on
The initial contact may have been within the rules but the second caught Saad on the leg and Bremen could have had no complaints if a penalty had been given
With the game entering the final quarter of an hour Blessin threw on Robert Wagner and Connor Metcalfe for Carlo Boukhalfa and Danel Sinani
the home side thought they had broken the deadlock after a quickfire break and some excellent work by Romano Schmid saw substitute Oliver Burke curl a shot beyond Vasilj
but for the third time on the day the goal was ruled out for a narrow offside
Towards the end both teams lacked the punch required to win it
and after Metcalfe had been sent off for two bookable offences in stoppage time
Treu - Sinani (Metcalfe 75’) - Guilavogui (Eggestein 88’)
Next up for the Boys in Brown is a trip to in-form Werder Bremen on Sunday (17.30 CET)
head coach looked ahead to the game with journalists at the pre-match news conference
...the injury situation: “We took Manolis Saliakas out of training as a preventive measure but he’s back now and will play if there’s no reaction tomorrow
Everyone else is available apart from Jackson Irvine
We’ll know in the next few days how long he’ll be out and when he can come back.”
...his attacking lineup: “We’ve switched things round in training and looked at what could happen
I’ll wait until after the session tomorrow.”
...opposition respect for our bouncebackability and good performances: “That’s what you fork for
Talking about playing ugly or being difficult to play against is one thing
and it obviously does you good when the results come with the performance
It helps the team go the next step in their development and it feels good
We have to stop going behind in games and it’d be good to keep a clean sheet again.”
...opponents Werder Bremen: “Before the reverse fixture I said I liked to watch their games because they have a clear structure and follow clear principles as to how they want to play
They play in a 3-5-2 and sometimes in a 4-4-2 depending on the situation
but they’ve come out of their sticky patch in the last four games
They’ve performed well and deserve to be up there
...playing last again: “If we play on a Friday and win
If the games on the Friday and Saturday go the way they did last week
you know you have a chance to round off a good weekend on the Sunday
It always feels good when we win our games
My assessment of the team is based on the way they’ve presented themselves in training
They’ve been going about their business in a very focused way and are determined to get a result at Bremen regardless of how the games go on Friday and Saturday.”
...the view that staying up is a mere formality: “I don’t intend to let up in the way I communicate with the team
so we have to keep our performance levels high
Everyone knows the last two rounds of matches were good for us because the other results went our way
It’s important for us to focus on ourselves and go the final steps
I know this group are very clear in their thinking and see things the same way
They all want to go that last step as soon as possible.”
After the scoreless draw at Werder Bremen the mood in the camp was one of disappointment due to the drop in performance in the second half
Here’s the pick of the post-match reaction
Head coach Alexander Blessin: “We did a lot of things right in the first half – both on and off the ball
The height of the defensive line was good and we were aggressive in the challenge
We exploited the half spaces well when we had the ball
we could have gone for goal more often because it could have been dangerous
Bremen have quality and made good use of the spaces
We had a few problems when they ran at our backline with pace but we survived
It’s debatable whether we should have had a penalty
At the end of the day we can be pleased with a good first half and a below-par second
The point could be worth its weight in gold in the end.”
Eric Smith: “We invested a lot in the first half and got into some good positions but we couldn’t finish off the attacks
We’ve made progress as the season as unfolded and today we again had a keeper who ensured we didn’t lose
They had some good chances and we had a bit of luck a couple of times but you have to earn your luck
Bremen can still qualify for the Champions League and we want to stay up
so a point away from home won’t do us any harm.”
Carlo Boukhalfa: “The performance in the first half was good
The quality of the opposition shows when you tire a bit but we defended well
so our work isn’t done and we can’t afford to let up
Against Stuttgart we’ll go flat out again to get closer to our target.”
Ole Werner (Werder Bremen head coach): “When one coach is more satisfied with one half and less with the other
then it’s the opposite way round for the other coach
We didn’t run at them or push up well enough in the first half
Our timing and levels of aggression weren’t as good as they need to be against St
We didn’t get into the game and had no answers on the ball
but we didn’t really get things right until the second half
I’m largely satisfied with the performance after the interval because we didn’t have many defensive problems
We didn’t have many chances but that was to be expected against St
We got into the situations we wanted to get into from the off
If a team don’t give you many opportunities
you have to take one of them if you want to leave the field victorious
In a game low on chances we had the better opportunities but unfortunately we didn’t take them
Who knows what it'll be good for in the end.”
Today New York City FC announces that it has loaned Midfielder James Sands to FC St
Pauli in the German Bundesliga through June 30
Pauli having an option to extend the loan through the 2025/26 season based on certain conditions being met
Sands has extended his contract with New York City FC through December 31
Since returning to New York City at the start of the 2023 season
the midfielder made 67 appearances across all competitions providing four assists and notched his first goal for the club
Sands became the first homegrown player to join The Century Club after making 100 MLS appearances
the American had a career high in assists and became the third homegrown to score a goal
as well as earning New York City FC Defensive MVP accolades
“We are really pleased for James that he has earned this opportunity to play for a fantastic club in the Bundesliga,” said Sporting Director David Lee
“When James returned from his loan at Rangers in 2023
he was always clear that in the future he wanted the opportunity to return to Europe and we agreed that we would be supportive of those ambitions at the right time
This is an incredible opportunity for James to play in one of the top five European leagues
“James has been an incredible professional since he first signed with the club in 2017
and his development and career so far should be an inspiration to all the players in our academy
James had a huge impact in helping the team return to the playoffs in 2024
in addition to reaching his milestone 100th appearance and deservedly winning the club’s Defensive MVP award
While we will miss James on-and-off the field during the loan period
we are excited to closely follow his career in Europe and wish him all the best for the remainder of the Bundesliga season.”
Sands became the club’s first homegrown signing in 2017 and made 76 appearances and provided one assist
all culminating in helping the club secure its first MLS Cup in 2021
Sands was loaned to Scottish side Rangers Glasgow where the midfielder made 41 appearances and contributed a goal in all competitions
Sands won the 2022 Scottish Cup and featured in the 2021 Europa League final
as well as UEFA Champions League group play prior to returning to New York City in 2023
I would like to thank everyone at the club for welcoming me back and aiding my progression,” said Midfielder James Sands
I feel like it’s the right time to make a move back to Europe
and very much looking forward to testing myself and experiencing a new league
I wish my teammates and the club all the best of luck in the upcoming season.”
Transaction: New York City FC loan Midfielder James Sands to FC St
They’ve won their last four games in a row
with the most recent being a 1-0 victory against VfL Bochum
and Bremen were second-best in the first half
and some smart substitutions plus a tiring opposition finally led to chances
as a direct cross from Justin Njinmah was redirected home by Mitchell Weiser from close range
This run has vaulted them right into the thick of the European race
and they’ll like their chances of picking up more results before the end of the campaign
they know they’ll end up in some European competition
they’ve fallen under this sort of pressure before
and supporters are worried that they’re going to see the same story unfold
A win here would be huge in their quest for a top-six finish
Team newsWerder will only be without center back Milos Veljkovic
while there’s some questions concerning the status of Oliver Burke following his decision to sign a pre-contract with Union Berlin
and it’s been the big reason why they’re out of the bottom three
They clinched another big result last weekend
tying reigning-champions Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 to add another point to their tally
but Carlo Boukhalfa poked home from a set-piece to grab a key equalizing goal
Die Kiezkicker have only lost one of their last six games
and that was to league-leading Bayern Munich
That has kept them away from the relegation zone
and they currently sit five points ahead of FC Heidenheim in the battle for the relegation-playoff place
and it’s one of the best records in the Bundesliga
The problem is they’ve only scored 26 goals
which is the lowest tally in the entire division
At this point they know they can’t rely on any of their attacking players
they’ll have to hope to snatch a goal from a set-piece or during a counter attack
Pauli certainly won’t go away without a fight
Team newsThe problem for the club is that they’ll be without several players

The loaned-out New York City FC midfielder needed surgery to correct "a complex right ankle injury involving a fractured fibula and torn medial collateral ligament."
James Sands is facing a lengthy period on the sidelines as New York City FC and FC St. Pauli both concurrently just announced that the loaned-out midfielder underwent surgery to address "a complex right ankle injury involving a fractured fibula and torn medial collateral ligament."
NYC is with you, Jimmy 💙[image or embed]
Sands suffered the injury while playing his seventh match while on loan with FC St. Pauli in the German Bundesliga
who Sands joined on January 1 on a loan that runs through June 30
He was starting his fifth straight Bundesliga match
Pauli midfield that had churned out some decent results since adding Sands and separated from the pack of relegation-threatened teams at the bottom of the Bundesliga table
The injury occurred in the 92nd minute with St
Pauli trailing SC Freiburg 0-1 at home and lined up for a last-gasp free kick to try to find an equalizer
Sands was forward in the attacking penalty area and rose to try to meet the whipped-in delivery to head home a goal (much like he did that one time against Inter Miami CF
but landed extremely awkwardly and suffered what sounds like a horrible leg injury
Pauli's official statement on the Sands injury says he underwent his corrective surgery at University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf and will be out for an indefinite period of time
and based on the severity of the injury as described
it might be hard to see Sands returning before the end of St
This is the second bad turn of events to befall Sands while on a European loan away from New York City FC
though this one is of the freak injury variety
not the more standard "American player pushed aside by a new coach" he experienced when Michael Beale took over at the end of Sands's tenure with Rangers FC in Scotland
Sands had settled in extremely well with St. Pauli, with ProSoccerWire passing along both glowing and devastating quotes from St
Blessin said of the Sands injury in his post-match press conference
He was very strong in the tackle and got Jackson Irvine into a better position next to him
The hope is that he'll be back as soon as possible
Update 2/17: Tom Bogert reports Sands will be sidelined until June
The injury throws into question what's in store for Sands
He might not be healthy again until the tail-end of his time on loan to St
What will that mean for him and a potential return to the Hamburg-based club for their 2025-2026 season
all that can be done is hope Sands makes a smooth
speedy recovery from what sounds like a rough injury

Thoughts on New York City FC's second straight win
and the potential to make it a three-match streak next weekend
Pauli edged closer to safety on Sunday evening after banking another point in a 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen in front of a sell-out crowd at the Millerntor
Patrik Schick gave the visitors a 32nd minute lead before Carlo Boukhalfa secured a richly deserved equaliser 12 minutes from time
Head coach Alexander Blessin made four changes to the team that won 2-1 at Holstein Kiel
Carlo Boukhalfa and Morgan Guilavogui started the game in place of injured captain Jackson Irvine plus Adam Dźwigała
Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso made one adjustment from the scoreless draw against Union Berlin
Florian Wirtz coming in for Aleix García (bench)
The game kicked off in almost perfect conditions for football and the Boys in Brown more than held their own in the opening stages
it came as no surprise when the Blessin XI created the first openings
Manolis Saliakas got on the end of a Boukhalfa cross in the seventh minute but was unable to direct his header on target
Boukhalfa headed a Danel Sinani free-kick a couple of metres too high
Leverkusen almost took the lead out of nowhere when Wirtz hit a lovely through ball with the outside of the foot to Nathan Tella
who whipped the ball into the box from the left for Jeremie Frimpong to steer a shot just past the post
Blessin had said in the run-up that his team would not be able to defend every situation and that chance was evidence of that
Boukhalfa hit a piledriver from just outside the box
but Lukáš Hrádecký got both hands up quickly to make the save
The reigning champions continued to probe but were unable to find a way through the customarily tight FCSP rearguard
and as they gradually found their shape there were no further chances of note for Blessin’s charges either
Just over half an hour had elapsed when the visitors took the lead from a set piece
Alejandro Grimaldo knocked a free-kick into a crowded goal area
where somehow Patrik Schick still had enough space to head home
Leverkusen had the edge now but lacked the penetration to threaten again
and the half ended with the Boys in Brown a goal down
Patrick Schick (No14) had the fewest touches of any player in the first half but one of them gave his team the lead
Both teams emerged unchanged for the second half
Alexander Blessin’s men hit the ground running and had more of the game in the opening stages but lacked punch and ideas in the final third
was met with frenetic applause from the home fans
and the Boys in Brown had already demonstrated that they had the wherewithal to come from behind and get a result in the 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach and the 2-1 win at Kiel
Blessin opted to make his first change with an hour gone
introducing Noah Weißhaupt for Connor Metcalfe
And Weißhaupt made his mark right away when he won a free-kick on the left edge of the penalty area
and his curling effort was heading towards the top corner before it was palmed away in fine fashion by Hrádecký
the Boys in Brown were awarded another free-kick
Smith took on the responsibility a second time
The pressure was sustained now and in their quest for the equaliser the Blessin XI practically had the visitors pinned back in their own half
And with 74 minutes gone they notched what they thought was the equaliser when a Philipp Treu cross found Guilavogui
and the referee chalked the goal off for handball
The response from the Boys in Brown was emphatic
the ball was in the net again and this time it counted
Hrádecký could only parry a fiercely struck Sinani free-kick
and Boukhalfa was on hand to convent from close range
the question on everyone’s lips now was could they go on and win it
Nikola Vasilj had to pull out all the stops to keep out a long-range effort from Grimaldo on 81 and a Hincapie header 60 seconds later
Goalscorer Boukhalfa then made away for Robert Wagner to a warm round of applause
The crowd were on their feet in the closing stages but for all the noise there were no more chances of note and it ended all square
Pauli entertain reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday (19.30 CET)
head coach Alexander Blessin looked ahead to the game in conversation with the media
...the injury situation: “Elias Saad had to sit out training with a knee problem and Johannes Eggestein had a swollen ankle after going over on it
who was out for two days but trained again today
plus Danel Sinani and Lars Ritzka are also available again
so we have a full squad to choose from apart from Jackson Irvine.”
...the loss of Jackson Irvine: “We can’t say whether he’ll be out for the rest of the season
We’ll have to see how the next ten days go
We’ve had to deal with the loss of lots of important players this season and have always managed to compensate
We have three players who can replace him in Connor Metcalfe
each with their own profile for how can they help us
We need to find out what’s best the team in view of the opposition.”
...the media rumours that Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim are interested in him: “A lot gets written
We have five crucial weeks ahead of us and are focusing on the games and what we have to do
My job is to prepare the team for every cup final
We’re totally focused on the games and not looking left or right.”
...opponents Bayer Leverkusen: “They’ll give it all they’ve got until the day it’s mathematically impossible
They missed out last week because Union Berlin were outstanding
We have the quality to get something from the game
Against a team like them you need a good day
a clear strategy and clarity in your actions for 90 minutes
They have certain areas they like to run and play the ball into
but in the away game we showed we were nearly there
We know they're very strong away from home.”
…our own game: “In recent weeks our solution has never been simply to take up a deep position
We’ve gone to an attacking press depending on the situation and then taken up a slightly deeper position again
Leverkusen have the quality to see the space and exploit it.”
...playing under the lights and the special backdrop: “I’m looking forward to a good game
The evening kick-offs have been magical recently and now there’s the fair as well
The atmosphere will be brilliant and we want to do our bit
but we have to put in the hard work first.”
…the league table: “We know the situation we’re in and we’re still aware that we have five cup finals left
We’ll do well to remember we need every point
We’re doing everything we can to get the points as soon as possible and aim to start against very strong opposition.”
Bayer Leverkusen have dropped crucial points in the fight for the Bundesliga crown against Bayern Munich: Xabi Alonso's side drew 1-1 against Alexander Blessin's St
After 30 matchdays in the 2024/25 Bundesliga season
place Bayer Leverkusen has increased to 8 points - while mathematically still possible
it seems like Xabi Alonso's goal of retaining the Bundesliga Meisterschale is close to impossible now
Pauli were the more aggressive side in the first 20 minutes of the game
even though they were missing their captain Jackson Irvine in this match
creating many chances and scoring many goals
Leverkusen were able to come back after the surprisingly good start by the hosts and scored the first goal of the game in the 32nd minute: Patrik Schick coverted a cross from Alejandro Grimaldo and scored with his head to bump up his Bundesliga goal tally to now 18 goals
Schick is the second best goalscorer in the league and “just” 6 goals behind Bayern Munich's Harry Kane with 24 goals - let's see if it can get more exciting in this category over the next few matchdays
The hosts were not unsettled by going behind and kept up their aggressive style of play
The substitution of Noah Weißhaupt into the game was seemingly the missing piece for die Kiezkicker:
He was the one who brought the final finesse into the hosts gameplay and he even assisted Morgan Guilavogui's goal in the 74th minute - before it got called off for a handball decision
it was Carlo Boukhalfa who made the club from Hamburg go wild: his shot from short distance in the 78th minute counted and was the final blow in an exciting game
Leverkusen are 8 points behind the leaders Bayern Munich - and St
Pauli are now 8 points ahead of Heidenheim who currently sit on relegation rank 16
While Bayern seem to be the next Bundesliga champions after this result
Pauli could have just secured another season of Bundesliga football for themselves
The final decisions will of course be made in the next few weeks - but this game might have already been the season decider for both Leverkusen and St
Let's see if any mircales dare to happen on matchday 31,32,33 and 34

Borussia Dortmund haven’t won two Bundesliga games in a row this entire season
It’s two wins and two clean sheets in a row for Niko Kovač’s BVB
who will head into a tough string of matches starting next week
The game played out in a pattern we’ve seen before—Dortmund playing a lackluster first half and then an improved second half
Another goal from Guirassy sees him climb further up the top scorers' list
and a splendid solo goal from Adeyemi sees him paying off the trust Kovač has put in him as of late
Here are my observations from Saturday’s 0-2 win against St
It seems like Niko Kovač has made an executive decision regarding Dortmund’s defense
It’s not really anything new—Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can have played together multiple times over the past couple of seasons
Can played another very mature game without doing much wrong
Pauli was only handed a couple of half-chances in the first half
they didn’t create anything meaningful in attack
and players like Adeyemi and Beier are invaluable out of possession and are quick to close down space
there can be no doubt that Can and Schlotterbeck have something going
I was so freaking happy when Adeyemi finished off his chance in the 58th minute
Not only was it a direct display of confidence from the often-criticized German international to finish off the chance
It was also the culmination of a player who has slowly but surely worked his way into this team again
We can all agree that Adeyemi has been very inconsistent since joining Dortmund in the summer of 2022
but we have also witnessed how he’s a player who can win you games when he’s playing at his absolute best
I loved how the team circled him after the goal
and even the bench was up celebrating for their teammate
I think Kovač has shaken things up quite a bit in Dortmund already
While Nuri Şahin didn’t make too many changes in squad selection
you might have already noticed that Kovač is often rotating his squad
It also feels like he emphasizes getting many players on the pitch during a game
One of the most challenging jobs for any coach is to build an environment of healthy competition within a squad with many good players
too many players have been too secure for far too long
There is no doubt that the new signings help
but I can assure you that we would’ve seen a lot more Jamie Gittens had Nuri Şahin still been on the bench for Dortmund
Have you experienced a shift in your mood when you think about BVB
After another strong performance that more than warranted a point against champions Bayer Leverkusen
the mood in the camp was one of great satisfaction
Head coach Alexander Blessin: “We were very energised from the off today
We than ran out of steam a bit and failed to find the right line in the back four
Conceding from a set piece was hard to stomach
It’s even harder to take when you’ve not given much away and then go behind like that
At half-time we talked about the need to be braver in defending forward
We then had better control in the second half and deserved to get the equaliser
it was a really good performance and we can be very satisfied with the point.”
Eric Smith: “The first 20 minutes went incredibly well for us but we tired a bit after that
We struggled when Leverkusen found their pressing pattern but eventually managed to stress and hurt them again
We’re missing two of our best players in Karol Mets and Jackson Irvine and yet we still managed to put in a performance like that
We showed character and the lads who came on were superb.”
Carlo Boukhalfa: “It feels great to have taken a point against opposition of that calibre
It’s normal for Leverkusen to create chances with the quality they have
We were very energised and showed morale to come back after going behind
I have to take my hat off to the lads who played today for the way they performed
I was delighted to play and score again after such a long time out of the first team
Hauke Wahl: “We did a lot of things right today
We started well and let Leverkusen know it was going to be tough for them here
In the last 20 minutes before the break we let the gaps get a bit too big and gave Leverkusen a couple of chances
The set piece for their goal was executed perfectly
You saw the individual quality they have there
In the second half we showed what we’re capable of
We kept a slightly higher line at the back
It felt like we had an exceptional tackle success rate
We showed great tenacity and kept finding solutions on the ball
One key feature of our game is that we’re good at counterpressing and have a good rest defence
we have to be on it right away and put the tackles in
We’ve sent out a message to the rest of the league
that we never give up and are a force to be reckoned with
We’re on 30 points now but we know we still have one or two steps left to take.”
Xabi Alonso (Bayer Leverkusen head coach): “It was a high-intensity game
We didn’t start well in the first 15 minutes but we responded well after that and had more pace and control and got the goal
Pauli pressed a bit more and we couldn’t find the final ball to get a second goal
We allowed them more corners and free-kicks and conceded the equaliser
