Stolberg was formally arraigned March 7 for the allegation via video teleconference and he is scheduled for a pretrial hearing at 1 p.m He retained Joseph MacArthur Hall to represent him and faces up to 93 days in jail if convicted as charged BLOOMINGTON — Former Indiana football player Eric Stolberg has been itching to get back to the Rose Bowl Stadium for years It’s why he was cheering on the Big Ten’s expansion plans every step of the way Stolberg, who currently resides in Bloomington, thought the Hoosiers making a trip out west would provide the perfect excuse to get back to the site of the 1968 Rose Bowl and maybe reunite with a few former teammates in the process He booked a flight once the conference finalized the 2024 schedule that included the first ever matchup between IU and UCLA. “I haven’t been back since we played,” Stolberg said in a recent phone interview with The Herald-Times “I’ve been telling guys for years we should meet up but it’s hard with everyone scattered across the country ▶ GAME COVERAGE: For complete analysis of Saturday's IU at UCLA football game Stolberg was a receiver on the ‘67 Hoosiers that went to the Rose Bowl that season to face No They remain the only team in program history to play in the prestigious postseason game and are also the last IU team to win a Big Ten title but the venue still conjures memories of the Cardiac Kids and their special place in IU history More: What happened last time Indiana football visited the Rose Bowl? IU legends look back Indiana football saw a glimmer of hope amidst the wreckage but the freshmen team — coach John Pont’s first full recruiting class — beat a Ohio State squad made up of the country’s top recruiting class and had a competitive game in a heated showdown with Michigan State The class was made up of future IU Hall of Famers like quarterback Harry Gonso receiver Jade Butcher and running back John Isenbarger of “Punt and we all ended up being starters as sophomores,” Stolberg said Pont made sweeping schematic changes on both sides of the ball to take advantage of the influx of talent He installed a speed-option offense to make use of the team’s improved athleticism and switched up their base defense from a 5-2 to a 4-4 since they had a deep linebacker room that included All-American Ken Kaczmarek “It was just kind of the perfect combination,” Kaczmarek said Pont also got an assist from former Alabama coach Bear Bryant The staff visited Alabama during the offseason and Bryant advised Pont to have his defenders lose about 10 to 15 pounds to improve their speed Veterans and younger players alike bought into the Pont’s vision “A lot of guys sacrificed for the good of the team,” Stolberg said who was a pro prospect at offensive tackle Terry (Cole) moved from tailback to fullback The final piece of the puzzle clicked into place when Gonso beat out John Isenbarger to win the starting quarterback job "John was probably the best athlete on the team,” Indiana’s assistant athletic director for alumni relations Mark Deal said “They had to get him on the field and moved him to tailback 10 days before the first game." Deal attended all but two of IU’s games that season to cheer on his brother Mike was an All-American tackle and captain for the IU team that went undefeated and won the Big Ten in 1945 He was 10-years old at the time and still has vivid memories of what followed — the Hoosiers won eight games in the final four minutes to earn that Cardiac Kids moniker The most memorable of those finishes came in the regular-season finale against a one-loss Purdue team Indiana made a goal line stand in the final minute with Kaczmarek forcing a fumble at the 3-yard line It was the program’s first win over Purdue at Bloomington in 20 years and only second win overall While there was a three-team tie atop the Big Ten to end the season between IU there wasn’t much drama over who would go to the Rose Bowl Purdue wasn’t eligible by rule having played in the game the previous season There was near unanimous agreement amongst the league’s athletic directors that IU get the bid over the Gophers The Hoosiers found out at 9:01 pm on the night they beat Purdue that their Cinderella season would continue in Pasadena More: 'That's kind of poison': IU football defender channels Nick Saban as team preps for UCLA Indiana football walks the red carpet in Pasadena Indiana players had an unofficial mascot during the two weeks they spent in Pasadena linebacker Kevin Duffy became pen pals with Gypsy Boots who was a frequent guest on the late night talk shows of the era greeted the team as they got off the plane and was their constant companion on the trip “He tried to get into the team picture,” former IU corner Mike Deal said but he showed up at every practice with this beat up car.”  Boots took a small group of players including Deal to The Factory an exclusive nightclub frequented by celebrities Deal found himself hobnobbing with Pierre Salinger President Kennedy’s former press secretary who had an ownership stake in the club Stolberg said the rest of the trip was just as “surreal” with Indiana attending a series of official Rose Bowl-related events alongside USC players that included dinner at Lawry’s Steakhouse and a trip to Disneyland The dinner at Lawry’s concluded with Rose Bowl officials announcing which of the teams consumed the most beef "Everywhere we went it was a big deal,” Stolberg said Some Hoosiers players were starstruck by Simpson who led the nation in rushing and finished second in the Heisman voting as a freshman Simpson clinched a spot in the Rose Bowl for USC a few weeks earlier with a go-ahead 64-yard touchdown against UCLA Indiana still took its prep time on the field seriously amidst all the hoopla The Hoosiers held two-a-days at the dedicated practice fields right outside the Rose Bowl Stadium that had what Stolberg described as “breathtaking” views of the San Gabriel mountains While Simpson drew much of the press coverage at the time IU knew his supporting cast was just as talented The Trojans had 11 players (five first-rounders) drafted a few months after the Rose Bowl Simpson had two of those first-round picks Minnesota drafted Yary with the first overall pick that year and Taylor went at No Yary has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame Defensive end Tim Rossovich and linebacker Adrian Young To keep Indiana focused in the days leading up to the game Pont had the team stay at the Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center an operational monastery built in the 1930’s They were much more modest accommodations than the team enjoyed at Huntington Sheraton More: How Indiana football DE Mikail Kamara went from zero to hero, silencing his doubters Indiana’s equipment managers stopped Ken Kaczmarek from packing up his things after the Rose Bowl The All-American linebacker needed his uniform and helmet for the Hula Bowl look at your facemask,” Kaczmarek was told The broken facemask highlighted what everyone who played in the game remembers most — it was a hard-hitting affair who played through a dislocated shoulder that season nearly ended up in the hospital after taking a crushing blow at USC’s 5-yard line with less than a minute to go There were some initial concerns that he suffered a punctured lung “I still wish I could have caught it,” Stolberg said “I was running a post route and I had my arms up ready to catch the ball and as soon as the ball hit my hands their safety got underneath me and I was diagnosed with two cracked ribs Simpson didn’t make it out of the game unscathed either The former All-American carried the ball 25 times for 128 rushing yards — his third-lowest single-game total of the season — and didn’t have a single carry go for more than 20 yards “Several times I thought I was going to get away,” Simpson said in a story on the game from The Herald-Times Indiana’s linebacker and their deep men were very quick Much of Simpson’s production came in the first quarter 84-yard scoring drive that Simpson capped off with a 2-yard touchdown run He accounted for 46 yards on the possession we worked for two weeks on attacking the lead back,” Kaczmarek said “Our goal was to push him and stop him in the backfield and make Simpson go out of his normal running lanes we blitzed them in a lot of different ways You could see the coaches on the Southern Cal sidelines were frustrated.” Indiana had plenty of what-if moments that still haunt the team The first came in the second quarter when sure-handed tight end Al Gage who led the team with six catches for 67 yards dropped a would-be touchdown in the end zone without a defender in sight The Hoosiers settled for a 27-yard field goal two plays later Another pivotal moment came in the third quarter after Gonso led the Hoosiers into USC territory on a drive that started at their own 10-yard line He suffered muscle spasms with the offense facing a third-and-one at the 38-yard line and had to briefly come out of the game “I wish we would’ve called a timeout to get Gonso back in,” Kaczmarek said he led us against Arizona when Gonso was out Indiana running back Terry Cole was stopped at the line of scrimmage on third down and Perry threw an incompletion on fourth down The Hoosiers finished the game with a season-low 189 total yards “They were tough and they never quit,” Young said at the time “I’d say they were as good as any other team we played.” USC was crowned national champs and Indiana ended up ranked No The loss doesn’t dampen the memory for Kaczmarek who got choked up when recalling the moment he walked onto through the tunnel at the Rose Bowl to a “sea of red.”  “There were 20,000 to 30,000 of our fans there,” Kaczmarek said It was just as memorable for the fans in the stands that day like Mark Deal who is heading to the Rose Bowl as part of IU’s advance team on Thursday as the lone member of the department who was in the stands back in 1968 “It was an unbelievable experience for a 10-year old,” Deal said that gap,” Stolberg said “But that’s just the first step Action has to follow understanding to bring about real change I find genuine joy in serving my community and will work to inspire that feeling in others so they can enjoy being an active part of where they live.” Campus Compact provides students with learning and networking opportunities that nurture their development as civic leaders Santarelli and was located in the right transept of the Basilica on the left wall of the Castellani chapel six years after her death fifteenth century architectural layout is reminiscent of ancient monuments and houses two pensive winged funerary Geniuses of tender childlike forms. The two Geniuses are placed on the sides of a cippus on which is carved in bas-relief on the front the Virtues (Faith Hope and Charity) representing those of the illustrious deceased In the lunette inside the upper arch we can observe the coats of arms of the Stolbergs and Stuarts On the tombstone in the centre of the base there is an inscription made of pure gold which recalls the incomparable qualities of the countess who died in 1824 at the age of 72 Louise of Stolberg-Gedern was a protégé of Maria Theresa of Austria a modest income and a suitable arranged marriage Louise was chosen to marry Charles Edward Stuart considered the rightful heir to the thrones of England The union soon proved to be a failure and dangerous for Louise's life and thanks to her diplomatic skills she appealed to the Grand Duke Peter Leopold the Cardinal of York and Gustav III of Sweden to obtain a legal separation as well as an annuity that would allow her to maintain her independence and economic well-being It was an audacious choice for an 18th century woman given that her husband's violent nature could not necessarily be a sufficient justification for the society of the time Louise of Stolberg-Gedern moved first to Paris and then to Florence together with her partner she created one of the most popular literary salons in the city frequented by Canova Chateaubriand and many other famous artists of the time Louise commissioned the celebrated sculptor Antonio Canova to produce the monumental tomb in Santa Croce Donna Malin retired from Johnson & Johnson after an intense thirty-year career she has dedicated herself to mentoring and promoting the professional and personal development of women She was for several years vice president of Women in Need a nonprofit organization that helps homeless women and children in New York to rebuild their lives and to break the cycle of homelessness Donna first visited Florence as a teenager and fell in love with the city she returned annually and now resides there for several months each year In 2014 she began to follow the activities of the Opera di “Contractors have hit a gas line in the area of Milne Library Please avoid University Drive in that area has been closed temporarily while the issue is resolved.” About 10 minutes after this alert was sent out an additional alert was released stating that the Integrated Science Center (ISC) and Newton had also been evacuated as a precaution.  the evacuation was initiated via a fire alarm pull There seemed to be a casual reaction to the evacuation happening this way with many people assuming that it was a fire drill According to an anonymous eyewitness who was inside the ISC at the time it was only “when police started taping off areas and yelling for students to evacuate the area saying it would be closed for a decent bit of the day that everyone quickly realized this was a bit more dire and from there people walked away confused and worried.”  a senior biology adolescent education major who was also in the ISC at the time of evacuation “The fire alarm was when I first heard about the gas leak I wasn’t sure if it was a drill or a chemical accident in a lab I got the alert about the gas leak about ten minutes later.”  she left all of her things behind in the evacuation “My belongings remained on a desk on the second floor of the ISC I was still panicked that there could have been potential theft and thought I was silly for leaving my stuff behind it was better to leave the building in the end.” a third alert was released to the campus stating that due to the high number of academic buildings being impacted by the leak classes would be canceled for the remainder of the day While these were the only buildings to be officially closed by the campus several buildings such as Fraser and Bailey had different entrances or exits barricaded in an effort to direct student traffic away from the area(s) of concern.  The first statement directed to employees of the campus was released in this alert as well stating that nonessential employees who work in affected buildings may work in alternate locations on campus or charge the absence to the appropriate leave accruals The majority of campus offices impacted by the closures took up residence in the MacVittie College Union Ballroom It was also in this alert that the college stated that the gas leak was not impacting residence halls.  the campus population received a fourth update stating that “Crews are actively working to fix the gas leak near Milne Library All classes are canceled for the remainder of the day and evening on February 20.” a final alert was released regarding the issue explaining that; “The gas leak has been turned off and the area is clear.” With the buildings deemed safe students such as Stolberg were thankful to be reunited with their belongings.  While the whole incident only reportedly lasted about five hours students have come forward stating that they were aware something was going on amidst Geneseo’s campus prior to any emergency alert released due to the smell of gas being prominent in the area of the leak.  there were no further updates on this situation SUNY Geneseo’s student newspaper since 1922 all comments that include harassment or any sort of hate speech
