Integrator IBB Elektronik installed an array of tech in new learning spaces at the German university
An Atlona OmniStream networked AV system is at the heart of a major upgrade to the learning infrastructure at Stralsund University
which specialises in technical education fields such as engineering and computer science
also chose an array of technology from Biamp
The university hired a regional electrical contractor to run a network cabling infrastructure for two new
but it needed to find the right technology partners to create infrastructure for the AV and IT system upgrades
The answer came when a representative from Atlona shared a concept that connected with the university’s vision
IBB Elektronik then brought the conceptual design to fruition
Two Wacom Cintiq Pro pen displays contribute to a dynamic learning experience in each classroom
Instructors leverage them as annotation devices
One display is larger than the other (one Cintiq Pro 24
and learning content from both pen displays can be added to the network on demand through an interactive touch screen
Instructors can also draw and adjust content before sharing
An Atlona OmniStream networked AV system feeds that content to three ceiling-mounted Panasonic laser projectors
flexible switching providing instructors to feed the projectors in any combination with immediate results
The system includes AT-OMNI-111 AV encoders and AT-OMNI-121 AV decoders
the latter of which receive and prepare the signals for presentation through the projectors
The projectors display the content on a white wall behind the instructor’s desk
and the instructor can choose the layout (standard mode
cinematic mode and more) that represents the most effective presentation for each lesson
said: “The AV system is managed by a centralised Velocity Gateway on the network with an 8in Atlona touch panel
Content from the source PCs in the room can be routed to the projectors over the network via OmniStream
The content is fed through one or more projectors
depending on the subject and the goal of the instructor
OmniStream’s fast-switching capabilities ensure that the instructor can switch between sources and display modes with no latency
which creates a consistent learning experience for students free of distractions.”
the middle projector offers wider image projection and will be used when the instructor wants to present information in what Bade calls “cinematic mode”; that projector can be turned off when the learning content is best presented through the smaller projectors at left and right
with different content appearing on each Wacom panel
Instructors can choose these and other projection layouts using an Atlona Velocity AT-VTP-1000VL 10-inch touchpanel
which serves as the control surface for many additional AV functions in the room
Bade added: “It is also possible to create an individual video distribution for any of the three projectors
Some professors just want a standard template for educational lessons they can quickly call up and use across all classes
Others want very specialised templates they can use with the interactive panels
or individual layouts they can easily modify
The Velocity control environment provides that flexibility to support different workflows.”
The “individual video distributions” Bade speaks about often come from the Atlona AT-HDVS-CAM added to the back wall
“This is the visual element that makes online education possible,” he said
they can take advantage of six preset positions that will allow remote learners to see individual screens or a complete classroom overview
It can also be adjusted to focus on the instructor during a lecture.”
Bade installed an Atlona Omega AT-OME-MS42 4×2 matrix switcher that is often used when a professor wants to bring his laptop into the visual environment or use other media such as a document camera
“When instructors connect to the OME-MS42 switcher
they have immediate access to the camera and
That provides an audio and microphone solution in the smaller auditorium
and the OME-MS42 can extra the audio as needed.”
The larger room features a Biamp Nexia DSP conference system
which offers 10 mic/line inputs and six mic/line outputs
The OmniStream system generates an AES67 audio stream to move audio sources on and off the network
Bade continued: “We have wireless microphones with headsets and a cable microphone on a stand
These and other audio sources are combined into the DSP to present clean sound for those physically in the room as well as for hybrid learners
Instructors can also active different audio presets on the Velocity touchpanel.”
The OmniStream networked AV ecosystem also supports longer distance signal distributions
including USB connections from the Atlona camera and the Nureva system
OmniStream AT-OMNI-311 USB to IP adapters prepare the signals for transport over the network
and AT-OMNI-324 convert the IP signals back to USB at the destination
The entire OmniStream distribution environment
Bade concluded: “OmniStream is the reliable transport mechanism for all this longer distance traffic
and really makes it possible to present visual content in so many flexible ways
With a Velocity hardware gateway at the centre of it all to map and control signals
the Straslund team has achieved precisely what it set out to do.”

The constellation of German shipyards built up by the now-bankrupt cruise operator Genting Hong Kong is gradually being sold off for new purposes
The MV Werften shipyard conglomerate took form in 2016 when Genting bought three shipyard locations from Nordic Yards
Genting's plan was to use these sites for the construction of its own cruise ships
filling its need for tonnage at a time when cruise yard orderbooks were fully booked out
with the onset of the pandemic in March 2020
MV Werften ultimately filed for bankruptcy in January 2022
triggering cross-default clauses that sent Genting Hong Kong into liquidation.
MV Werften's physical assets do not appear slated for bankruptcy purgatory
The Wismar yard's cabin-module subsidiary
has been snapped up by German life sciences company Eppendorf
The new owner plans to use the facility to make specialized lab consumables made of high-end polymers
Production will begin by the end of the year
and the new owner plans to recruit and retrain workers who previously were employed at MV Werften.
The MV Werften-owned Volkswerft yard in the former East German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been sold to the city of Stralsund
where the yard has long been a mainstay of the economy
The city paid $17 million for its 985-foot-long assembly hall and about 85 acres of space
and it is setting up a "maritime industrial and commercial park" at the site with multiple tenants
"We take the fate of our Volkswerft into our own hands," said Stralsund Mayor Alexander Badrow
The city of Stralsund has already leased the main yard facilities to Norwegian shipbuilder Fosen Yard A/S
which plans to use the Volkswerft site for new construction
The hall can accommodate vessels up to 950 feet long
and it comes with a ship lift capable of hoisting up to 25,000 tonnes
Steel forming and fabrication company Ostseestaal has also leased a part of the site for use in manufacturing vessel hatches and other components
MV Werften's biggest assets could become part of a grand plan for the consolidation of German defense shipbuilding. Oliver Burkhard, the CEO of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, told Welt in a recent interview that TKMS wants to lead in the creation of a "German champion" by joining up with competitors and adding new capacity.
The new "champion" could include a combination between TKMS and Lürssen or German Naval Yards Kiel
as well as the acquisition of new shipyard locations
MV Werften's former Wismar location is of particular interest
"The shipyard would be suitable for any form of additional orders
be it submarines or surface ships," he told Welt.

P+S Werften’s Volkswerft Stralsund site
German shipbuilder P+S Werften GmbH on Wednesday said it has filed for insolvency with the local court of Stralsund
“In recent days we have explored all options in our attempts to reach a solution,” said Rüdiger Fuchs
who has been CEO of P+S WERFTEN since August
“We have provided open and honest information about our problems and tried to prevent insolvency
Now it is clear that it is not possible to reach an out-of-court solution supported by all stakeholder groups.”
In a statement P+S Werften says it is seeking debtor’s self-administration in a bid to keep the available know-how in the company and to continue to build as many ships as possible
The company owns two sites in Stralsund and Wolgast
P+S Werften said it hopes that the sale of its Peene shipyard in Wolgast will be conducted within a structured investor process
Danish shipping and logistics company DFDS A/S (DFDS.KO)
who has two ro-ro newbuildings on order with P+S Werften
has already expressed concerns over whether or not the vessels on order will be delivered

The house in the German city of Stralsund was once home to a Jewish family named Blach and its leather business
It stood through Nazism and the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall
a married couple moved to the east German city
which had entered a new era after four decades of communist rule
creating retail space on the ground level and apartments upstairs
the story of the Jewish family that lived there before World War II emerged from the shadows
coaxed from obscurity by Friederike Fechner
a cellist who purchased and renovated the home with her husband
What Fechner found was a tale of tragedy and survival on a global scale
At least 10 members of the Blach family were murdered during the Holocaust
Some descendants believed they were the last of their family
while others couldn’t bear to revisit the past in search of relatives
It wasn’t until Fechner delved into their story that some Blachs learned they didn’t walk this world alone
“It was unbelievable to go from thinking you don’t have any relatives to learning that there are at least 40 people
who are alive and well,” said Christina Blake Oliver
when the restoration project earned a prize and she was asked to look into the house’s history for the awards ceremony
went to the Stralsund archives and learned the home once belonged to the Blachs
Julius Blach and his family lived in the home
and his family operated the leather business
a year before Adolf Hitler became German chancellor; four sisters who were killed in Nazi death camps in Poland; and another son
a lawyer who escaped to the United States before the war began
“It struck me,” Fechner said in an interview via Zoom
I have to find this last owner who fled to the US in 1937.”
Fechner happened to meet a genealogist and told her of the quest to identify Friedrich Blach’s descendants
the genealogist sent her the manifest for the US-bound vessel St
which Friedrich Blach boarded in Hamburg on Aug
Christina Blake Oliver’s brother and a professor at Columbia University
Fechner e-mailed Blake and heard back two days later
I am the grandson of Friedrich and great-grandson of Julius Blach
My grandfather Friedrich and my grandmother Kate managed to escape Germany during the Nazi period
eventually settling in New York with their children.”
Fechner had brought the Blach house back to life and had now found the family that carried its name
“It was totally awful to eliminate the Jews in Stralsund and also to murder them,” she said
photographed family graves in the local Jewish cemetery
she and her husband met Blake in New York City
Fechner’s research forged connections with more Blach descendants who were awakened to their ancestors’ history
She felt a duty to preserve the Blach family name
Blach,” a reference to the Blach leather business
Brass memorial stones honoring three family members were placed outside
Members of the younger generations traveled to Stralsund to meet Fechner and see their ancestors’ house
Fechner has also given lectures about her research
but she knew the history and felt ashamed of what the Nazis did to Jewish people
Researching the Blachs became a way she could support families who carry the scars of Nazi Germany
The Blach story could have easily been lost
remained fearful of the Nazis well into the 1950s and demanded that she be baptized as an Episcopalian
“He was afraid that the Nazis were going to get me,” she said
changed his name to Peter Blake and mostly refused to discuss his childhood in Germany
he wrote that most of his relatives who stayed in Stralsund were “murdered by the Nazi government.”
Oliver said she eventually discovered that she shares her ancestry with another Newton resident
was Friedrich Blach’s sister and died at Majdanek concentration camp in 1941
said her mother took her to Germany to visit her grandmother when she was a toddler
that is something that I can sit and cry about,” she said
The family’s heartache is etched in some of the documents Fechner has amassed
operated the family’s leather company until June 27
when his “wish to preserve the business for my sons did not come true” and he closed down
He made a plea to his “deceased ancestors.”
“I call to YOU that I have always tried to preserve your heritage but that I had to give way to fate,” Carl-Philipp Blach wrote
His two sons died in Auschwitz and he died in 1946
Fechner’s efforts were recognized earlier this year with an Obermayer Award. The honor is administered by Widen the Circle
an organization based in Dedham that seeks to combat antisemitism and prejudice
where she discussed her research before an audience that included members of the Blach family
On Thursday, Fechner marked another milestone with the publication of an online book about Jewish people who were born or have lived in Stralsund since 1856
The book is sponsored by the Initiative for the Commemoration of Jewish life in Stralsund
A gathering of Blachs in Stralsund is tentatively planned for next summer
though the reunion has already been postponed twice because of the pandemic
Fechner concludes her lectures with a question she often fields: Why are you doing this
This is her answer: “The most painful rejection of these innocent and individual victims would be in the continued refusal to remember — in forgetting

Europe’s newest mega-cruise ship builder MV Werften says it has signed of Letter of Intent to build two Polar-class luxury expedition vessels for Crystal Cruises
The LOI was signed with the engineering company Foreship who will be leading the design work
The agreement marks the latest newbuild deal in one of the fastest growing segments in the robust cruise ship market.
MV Werften said in a press release that the ships
will be 20,000 gross tons and measure 160 meters long by 23 meters wide
They will be able to accommodate up to 200 passengers in 100 suites and the same amount of crew
The vessels will be built at MV Werften Stralsund
with production starting late 2017 and deliveries from spring 2019
The company said the LOI covers parts of the basic design
purchasing and production assistance of the vessels
“We are excited to build a series of the world’s first purpose-built expedition yachts
with PC6 polar-class designation,” stated Jarmo Laakso
“Our own staff at all sites and other subcontractors have already been fully involved in this project
Foreship has proven to be a strong and reliable cooperation partner in numerous similar large-scale projects and will be a valued support in addition to our own workforce.”
MV Werften was formed earlier this year after holding company Genting Hong Kong acquired Nordic Yards’ three shipyards in Wismar
The new shipbuilding group has already clinched orders for ten vessels over the next five years
including the two 201,000 GT Global-class cruise ships for Star Cruises
the company has some of largest docks and covered cruise ship fabrication yards in Europe
and is one of only a handful of shipyards worldwide with the capacity to build the world’s biggest cruise ships
Foreship is one of the leading cruise ship design and engineering companies worldwide
having been involved in projects such as “Quantum of the Seas” for Royal Caribbean
“Norwegian Breakaway” for Norwegian Cruise Line as well as “Mein Schiff 3” and “Mein Schiff 4” for TUI Cruises

Tranquil Rügen, off Germany’s Baltic coast, teems with nature – and naturists, as Kevin Rushby finds on the third stage of his journey. Next week: MecklenburgWeek one | week two
Can the contrast between Britain and Germany be more stark than when it comes to public nudity
I come across it on my cycling tour of Germany’s largest island
almost as soon as I pedal across the bridge that connects it to the mainland and the elegant Baltic port of Stralsund
I’ve done just a few miles through shady woodlands and sleepy villages of quaint thatched cottages
There are cycle paths almost all the way and I’m enjoying myself
I emerge by the water and take a coastal path that soon degenerates into a boulder field
I carry the bike to a beach that is a metre wide
is a middle-aged man with a pot belly that is almost a metre deep and sun-ripened to walnut brown
He is the only person I can ask for directions
View image in fullscreenA typical village cottage in Altensien.“Guten Morgen,” I say
I am beginning to realise that all over this country
a dialect that is sometimes so different from standard High German that it is effectively a different language
it’s Hessisch; a little way east there’s Thüringische
It makes the linguistic landscape far more fascinating than I had ever suspected
View image in fullscreenThe lighthouse on Hiddensee’s Gellen peninsula

I have a long-held theory about travel: that the best experiences come when you get lost
narrow path that winds delicately through the trees for a mile to reach a locked gate
I glimpse huge broad wings as the bird turns
jinking around the tree trunks and then perching
I have recovered the true path and emerge from the woods by a wheat field in which a marsh harrier is hunting
Two deer pop their heads up from the wheat and come leaping towards me
View image in fullscreenTraditional merchants houses in Stralsund.I’m discovering that Rügen has a subtle charm
but it conceals all manner of wonderful things
it’s the white sandy beaches of the south-east
it’s the 18th-century Granitz hunting lodge
the neat Victorian elegance of the seaside town of Binz
and an aerial combat between a rough-legged buzzard and a sea eagle
For my fourth day, I leave the bike behind and walk from the coastal village of Lohme into Jasmund national park
Unfortunately it’s raining heavily and the earth track through the tranquil ancient beech forest is slippery
I slither down to the beach – a remarkable place that seems to be made entirely from flints and white feathers
This is soon explained when I come across large bevy of swans dabbling about in a seaweed bed under chalk cliffs known as the Königsstuhl (king’s seat)
The flints get larger: some bigger than an average swan. I find a path eventually and scramble up to the visitor centre
The walk back along the top of the cliffs feels epic and magical: nothing beats an ancient beech forest
View image in fullscreenGrosser Strand in the south-east corner of the island.Back on my bike the next day
I am never very far from refreshments of some sort
Signs for fish are everywhere – smoked herring or a fish roll usually
maybe served with some sea buckthorn relish
brewed in Stralsund and poured into a curved glass resembling a sail
The big open skies and wholesome rural life have long been an attraction here, especially for writers and artists: Caspar David Friedrich painted here; Brahms loved it; Helene Weigel, Bertolt Brecht’s widow, settled in Putgarten village; and Hans Fallada
hoping to wean himself off morphine with its pure sea air
who scour the shoreline for the fossilised resin that often turns up on beaches after storms
sparsely inhabited northern coast I lean my bike on a beech tree and clamber down to an empty beach
I wander through the cliff-top woods and fill my pockets with delicious wild plums
View image in fullscreenA boulevard of old beech trees near Kap Arkona. My final day starts with a 20-minute ferry ride to the island of Hiddensee
On a sun-soaked day it looks wonderful: thatched cottages everywhere
I’m soon hooked by this Baltic lotus-eater land myself
Why didn’t I plan ahead and retire forever to a thatched cottage surrounded by heather and hollyhocks
I have only a few hours to pedal the entire island
finally running out of steam on an idyllic sandy beach in the south
which runs hourly between Berlin and Stralsund (for Rügen)

German police said on Saturday they found a pig’s head bearing an “insulting inscription” outside Chancellor Angela Merkel’s constituency office in the country’s northeast.

A GREY Baltic Sunday morning in Greifswald and I am setting off for Hamburg
All along the train red-clad Polish football fans are sharing the same journey

Ahead of their Euros kick-off against the Netherlands they are in good heart
My cherished Hamburg goal is a painting of a faceless

Tread carefully along the tracery of footpaths into the deep forest
If you are very lucky you might spot a white-tailed eagle or peregrine falcon

A major reason for being here is the Friedrich painting the spot inspired
In stark contrast to today’s ticketed tourism the work’s trio of figures are once more looking away – out into an infinite Baltic seascape

Still the effort is made to make him ‘sexier’
Friedrich married late and in 1818 brought his much younger wife Caroline from their Dresden home for a honeymoon on his hallowed turf

4,000 years ago these primeval trees covered swathes of Europe
Nowadays this is a landscape to be protected
but alongside there is heath and marsh and fecund water filled-hollows
All this is home for an abundance of rare plants – notably lady’s slipper orchids plus giant horsetail and coralroot bittercress (no I couldn’t identify them either)

It initially feels a let-down after historic Stralsund.
In the Old Town alone there are over 800 listed buildings

Marienkirche and Nikolaikirche, and the turreted Rathaus (13th century town hall) to smaller domestic gems.
It proudly bears the plaque ‘Europäische Route der Backsteingotik’ (European Trail of Brick Gothic)
Such intense red brickwork is found all over the Stralsund

So its 39 large aquaria are home to 7,000 animals from around those seas and it also features the world's largest exhibition devoted to whales
the roof terrace offers not just the best view of the spired townscape but also a 10-strong colony of Humboldt penguins.
We lunched next door at buzzing Speicher 8
where we sampled surprisingly good white wine from Rügen with fish soup and soused herring
were all doing a roaring trade in smoked fish rolls and locally brewed Störtebeker beer.
And it’s not just salt water codfish and herring you’ll find in this stretch of coast
zander and perch appear on menus because of the phenomenon known as ‘Bodden’
I was paying attention to our guide in the Ozeaneum
At this far end of the Baltic bodden are a kind of briny offshore lagoon where fresh water from the mainland meets salt water from the sea
The Bay of Greifswald is that kind of low-salinity fishing spot…
The handsome sailing ship is normally berthed on the Greifswald quayside beside the Fangenturm, a remnant of the medieval fortifications. From here it is a 10 walk up the hill to Greifswald’s main commercial drag, Langestrasse. There you’ll find the Caspar David Friedrich Centre.
from a family of candlemakers and soap boilers
He was baptised in the nearby Cathedral of St Nicholas and his Christian faith bolstered him after tragedy struck
he was ice skating with his 13-year-old brother Christoffer when the ice broke and Caspar fell through
Christoffer dragged him free but in doing so drowned himself.
For fans the museum in his birthplace is well done, but there is a more vivid feeling of the artist in Greifswald’s outstanding Pomeranian State Museum with several exhibitions celebrating the anniversary year plus a gift shop where you can purchase Friedrich-branded wine and whisky
Most of the artist’s major works can be found in Berlin
but the gallery here has some exquisite examples
including Ruins of Eldena in the Giant Mountains.
We visited the 13th century Cistercian abbey of that name that inspired the painting – it's near Wieck – but the atmospheric ruins among ancient oaks were populated on that particular Saturday afternoon by a Medieval Fayre
whose tangled history is brilliantly charted in the eponymous museum
As both small scale manufacturer and cutting edge restaurant
Like Stralsund Greifswald is dominated by three churches – here nicknamed Little Jacob, Long Michael and Fat Mary (the Marienkirche with an amazing Renaissance pulpit homage to Luther and his ilk). The vast square of the Marktplatz has its own riot of brick and gables. I’d suggest booking into the Störtebeker Braugasthaus at No.13. for dunkelbier and classic North German dishes
in the 14th century Klaus Störtebeker was the leader of ‘The Victual Brothers’
a gang of Baltic pirates preying on Hanseatic merchantmen
Eventually Störtebeker was hunted down and
IN Stralsund he stayed at the Maakt Aparthotel, Tribseer Str. 22, 18439 and, just outside Greifswald, at the Hotel Stettinher Hof

Italian world Formula I circuit racing champion Guido Cappellini maintained his run of winning success at Stralsund on 4 August with his victory in the German Grand Prix
Cappellini (Dac/Mercury) has now won five of the six rounds held so far and with a total score of 100 championship points with five rounds remaining it’s difficult to see how he can be toppled from his quest for a seventh world title

Trailing 54-points behind is his nearest championship rival
The French driver would have to win the next three races without Cappellini finishing at all to have any chance of turning the tables in his favour; given the Italian’s past record it is highly unlikely
collecting pole position by setting the fastest lap in pre-race practice
it was a performance he could not repeat in the Grand Prix
He set the speed after reverting to his original Seebold rig following a disappointing performance with his new UAE-built hull
Unfortunately he was unable to repeat his success in the race itself
Gillman was not the only one to suffer disappointment
The event became a race of attrition with only six of the 19 boats in the line-up taking the finishing flag
Third slot was filled by Duarte Benavente (Burgess/Mercury) from Portugal
who crossed the line two laps behind the overall winner
An armed man is spotted in downtown Stralsund
People react in horror – the shootings on the town hall square last year have not yet been forgotten
He barricades himself in a souvenir store on the main shopping street
Then the police are called to a crime scene
Shots have been fired in the apartment of a family of three – father
The body of a middle-aged man lies in their blood
the dead man is not the head of the family
but the father is quickly discovered: he is the silent suspect in police custody
Almost all the circumstances of the crime speak against a family drama
When the identification service presents its results
Inspector Morolf sees the light – but initially remains silent
The dead man is a colleague from the drug investigation unit in Frankfurt/Oder
Thanks to the information from Brandenburg
a first picture comes together: The family was in witness protection
The background is an important statement in a trial against the drug mafia
But it was not the silent man in the interrogation room who was supposed to testify – but his missing wife
