The Special Training Command (ST-C) of the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA ) in Strausberg has reached an important milestone: since the beginning of the mission in autumn 2022, instructors from 11 nations have provided basic and advanced training to more than 20,000 Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel (AFU) in a wide range of military disciplines on German soil. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine in contravention of international law has violated Ukraine’s territorial integrity and thrust the entire country into a war it did not choose. Since October 2022 EUMAM UA training mission aims to strengthen the Ukrainian Armed Forces in support of Ukraine’s freedom and a peaceful Europe.  As a multinational command, the ST-C in Strausberg coordinates all training activities conducted in Germany. The focus is on a realistic, mission-oriented training concept. Members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are trained six days a week, 12 hours a day, in modules such as infantry tactics, mine clearance, casualty rescue and military leadership. Major General Olaf Rohde, commander of the ST-C, emphasized that “providing the best possible training for Ukrainian soldiers is an essential contribution to Ukraine’s defence capability. It reinforces both military competence and trust among comrades.” Over the next few months, emphasis will be placed on training Ukrainian instructors and leadership personnel to enhance their capacity for conducting their own training in Ukraine. Highly specialized training will likely remain for some time on EU soil. “This mission is more to us than a mere task. It is a commitment to Ukraine’s freedom and to peace in Europe. We will continue to support Ukraine for as long as necessary,” Major General Rohde added. February 2022 Germany has been supporting the country in its fight against the aggressor A crucial element of the support package is to provide training for Ukrainian service personnel regarding weapon systems The training provided by the Bundeswehr is carried out as part of the EUEuropean Union training mission EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine (European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine) The training mission was agreed by the EUEuropean Union member states on 17 October 2022 at the Foreign Affairs Council It is the first training mission on European soil The 24 participating European nations plan to provide basic and advanced training to approximately 60,000 Ukrainian service personnel by the end of 2024 Like-minded third-party countries may also participate in the mission The aim is to strengthen the military capabilities of the Ukrainian armed forces in such a way that they can effectively and sustainably defend their country and protect the civilian population The equipment required for training will be provided by the EUEuropean Union member states with common funding provided through the European Peace Facility EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine was recognised as a mission on 31 May 2023 and is now legally equivalent to other recognised missions such as the enhanced Forward Presence in Lithuania Recognised missions are permanent standing operational tasks with framework conditions that are comparable to a special foreign assignment They do not constitute a deployment of armed forces as defined in the German Parliamentary Participation Act EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine is also a mission without an executive mandate A mandate of the German Bundestag is therefore not required The task of EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine is to provide basic and advanced training for the Ukrainian armed forces in order to strengthen and enable them in their defence battle against the Russian aggressor Germany’s training contributions include the areas of military command and control command post training up to brigade level and combat training up to company level training on weapon systems and equipment including their tactical use All training is geared to the needs of the Ukrainian armed forces The focus is on combat readiness and sustainability EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine is a mandate without executive tasks – a so-called recognised mission Recognised missions inside NATONorth Atlantic Treaty Organization territory do not require the approval of the German Bundestag Up to 24 nations are participating in the mission The United Kingdom is conducting its own training mission at the national level A number of EUEuropean Union member states are supporting the mission by providing instructor contingents The multinational Special Training Command (MN ST-C) in Strausberg near Berlin coordinates and manages all training courses for the Ukrainian armed forces conducted in Germany regardless of which nation provides the instructors Training in EUEuropean Union countries outside Germany is managed by the Combined Arms Training Command in Zagan The ST-C is a multinational entity with around 100 posts filled by partner countries among them EUEuropean Union states such as Romania but also the non-EUEuropean Union state Norway The share of Bundeswehr service personnel involved in the actual training varies depending on which training courses are in progress around 1,500 Bundeswehr personnel are involved in the mission not only in instructor roles but also in supply roles and as translators for the Ukrainian forces This currently makes EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine the largest mission of the Bundeswehr in terms of numbers The ST-C as the coordinating command element is located in Strausberg near Berlin All other forces are assigned to the respective locations where the training takes place The training locations and times are not made public so as to protect the German and Ukrainian service personnel there is no need for separate medical support the military personnel involved can be treated at the local Bundeswehr medical clinic This also applies to Ukrainian service personnel in need of medical assistance The aim of the participating nations is to complete the training of approximately 30,000 Ukrainian service personnel within the framework of EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine by the end of 2024 around 6.200 Ukrainian troops have completed training in Germany Up to 10.000 service personnel could complete training by the end of the year The training is oriented towards operational requirements and focuses on essential topics so as to convey practical combat skills and knowledge in the shortest possible time This is because Ukrainian service personnel can generally only be exempted from their assignment in Ukraine for a short time The training contents are continuously adjusted to suit the needs of the Ukrainian forces The instructors are experienced expert personnel of the Bundeswehr and Teaching materials are provided in the Ukrainian language The training courses are also conducted in Ukrainian or Russian German service personnel with suitable language skills are employed as translators and interpreters the participating Ukrainian service personnel receive everything they need for their training from a designated service point operated by the Bundeswehr Bekleidungsmanagement GmbHGesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung This is initiated by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment Information Technology and In-Service Support In addition to several sets of undergarments and combat uniforms this basic equipment for instance also includes two pairs of combat boots as well as cold and wet weather protection gear All German national insignia are removed beforehand The Ukrainian soldiers are also issued with a sleeping bag the Bundeswehr training focuses on the PatriotPhased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target air defence system and the Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 main battle tanks Some of the training is conducted on systems which the Ukrainian soldiers subsequently take with them when they return to their home country The training content not only includes operation the Bundeswehr provides the Ukrainian service personnel with everything they need The training locations are not being made public so as to protect the service personnel it is also not possible to contact the Ukrainian soldiers Decide for yourself which data is recorded and customise your settings here You can find detailed information A version of the Flight Design F2e made its first public flight on June 5 in Strausberg powered by a Siemens SP55D-driven electric propulsion system in partnership with its eAircraft unit and APUS a Strausberg-based company specializing in systems integration The F2, normally powered by regular and turbo versions of the Rotax 912iS, was announced at AERO Friedrichshafen in April 2019, and classified as an Ultralight (600 kg) in Europe, or as a 650 kg CS-23 certified aircraft, and as an S-LSA in the United States. ASTM LSA and UL approval were anticipated early this summer, along with EASA approval later in the season. The carbon-fiber composite airplane is aimed at the training market, and continues the company’s forays into environmentally driven improvement, to include noise impacts as well as reduced carbon emissions. “I expect we will train around 10 by the end of the year” Eight thousand members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been trained so far by the EU mission for military assistance to Ukraine (Eumam Ua): “I expect we will train about 10 by the end of the year.” This is what was declared by the general of the German army Andreas Marlow at the top of the multinational special command for the training of Eumam Ua based in Strausberg near Berlin As reported by the radio and television station "Ard" in training the military of the country attacked by Russia attention is no longer focused on defensive operations Eumam Ua was designed to have a two-year duration and is structured around two equal operational commands while the second is assigned to Major General of the Polish Army Piotr Trytek Suddenly two armoured self-propelled howitzers (Panzerhaubitze 2000) appeared in the early morning fog it became clear that the commands and orders for the gun crew were not in German A German instructor explains the turret of the armoured self-propelled howitzer (Panzerhaubitze 2000) to a Ukrainian gunner In addition to training on the Medium Artillery Rocket System II (MARS II) the artillery school in the southwest of Germany has been providing training which the gunners need to operate the howitzer – to protect Ukraine from Russia The country which was attacked - in violation of international law - has received artillery systems of this type from the Netherlands as well as rocket launchers MARS II and MLRS from the United Kingdom and also from Germany The EU Military Assistance Mission for Ukraine is ensuring the effective training of Ukrainian soldiers to use this artillery to defend their country The part of the mission that Germany leads is managed by the "Special Training Command" with the abbreviation ST-C Its multinational staff is based in Strausberg The word "special" comes from the fact that special skills are trained such as operating the technically complex Panzerhaubitze 2000 And only the German artillery school can train them Suddenly there is hissing and cracking in the turret of the gun The practice insert: automatic ammunition supply failed The task now is to rearrange the processes so that the firefight can continue But the trainees do everything right: "Fire mission accomplished He has been on duty constantly since Russia occupied the Donbas in 2014 Ten to twelve hours of training every day and the news of the war at home You cannot survive the war without humour.” And a thoughtful person: “Civilians and soldiers die every day You must continue to help us.” He calls his country the protective shield for Europe He pronounces the word Panzerhaubitze in German the artillery had been neglected for years But artillery is the greatest force on the ground!” According to the Commander  , the German instructors give their all One has been with the Ukrainian gunners since May last year continuously "Always full throttle." The artillery school has been providing multinational training "for decades" "But trainees coming from a war for a war - that has a completely different quality." A particularly sad example: The brother of a Ukrainian gunner died How to help the young man who comes from a country where men are not allowed to cry Such mental aspects are also taken into account in the howitzer training It is obvious that they are highly motivated Intercultural competence is increasing on both sides every day While stressed German artillerymen may raise their voices when transmitting commands The German instructors stand guard as their Ukrainian comrades get on the bus Three days later they are back at the front Election has framed future of automobility as showdown between petrolheads and green zealots his white Hyundai Ioniq lurches forward and nestles between two fast-moving Volkswagens in the right-hand lane “A tap on the accelerator and the gap is mine,” he howls with glee “I love cars with curves and the growl of an eight-cylinder piston engine,” he says But for the last four years the vehicular object of his desires has run on megawatts rather than litres After swapping an old petrol-chugging Opel Signum for his first electric vehicle in 2017 he found himself having to defend his purchase to sceptical friends and family members who joked that he would spend more time at charging ports than ferrying around his young family To prove them wrong, Dumke recorded his daily commute and uploaded it to a YouTube channel that grew into a full-time occupation when restaurants closed during the pandemic This February he co-founded Berlin-Brandenburg Electric an association for EV enthusiasts that organises car shows rallies and culinary Saus und Schmaus (“drive and dine”) trips out of the German capital but it can offset one of the negative aspects of driving and allow us to have plenty of fun along the way,” he says Enthusiastic early adopters such as Dumke are key to the economic future of Europe’s leading car-producing nation But in a German election campaign that has framed the future of automobility as a showdown between speed-loving petrolheads and green zealots on cargo bikes As the country heads to the polls on 26 September, all main parties on the ballot apart from the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) say they are committed to Germany reaching net zero within the next 14 to 29 years and to curbing combustion engine emissions accordingly The outgoing government claims existing subsidy schemes will suffice for Germany to meet its green targets, forecasting 14m electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to populate its roads by the year 2030. The Greens and the Social Democratic party (SPD) are even more ambitious, by another 1m vehicles. But the question is whether the enthusiasm required for a pivot to electric vehicles can be mustered in a country as romantically attached to a car culture of old as Germany. many European nations think they have a unique love affair with car culture,” said Giulio Mattioli a transport researcher at the Dortmund’s Technical University “But I don’t know another country where so much national pride is invested in the combustion engine.” An opinion piece in the mass-market tabloid Bild this month mourned the days when politicians used to “lovingly stroke carriage parts” for photo ops complaining that “this year we are seeing an electoral campaign against the car and people who rely on four wheels” a likely kingmaker in Germany’s next coalition government has accused climate activists of waging an ideologically motivated “culture war against the car” while the AfD has attested its political rivals have a “hatred” for Germany’s automobile industry claiming that “Your car would vote for the AfD” Economic concerns were always likely to cause hesitancy in a country whose collective memory still links the “economic miracle” of the 1950s to the prowess of carmakers such as Volkswagen and BMW Roughly every 50th worker in Germany is directly employed in the automobile industry Some economic forecasters fear the switch to electric will not only spell redundancy for traditional car mechanics but also hit medium-sized suppliers When Steve Dumke joined fellow Berlin-Brandenburg Electric members at a lakeside hotel in Strausberg it was a Tesla Model Y and an electric Ford Mustang that had EV enthusiasts begging for a ride Out of 15 vehicles lining up on the car park Enthusiasts check out an electric car Photograph: Nicole Krueger/The GuardianYet even in Germany the situation is changing rapidly Purchasing incentives linked to last year’s pandemic stimulus package led to registrations of pure electric cars increasing by more than 300% year on year and in July electric cars on German roads crossed the 1m threshold missing a 12-year-old target by only a few months “Germany’s chances of becoming a champion of electric mobility are not perfect but they are still pretty good,” said Patrick Plötz a transport economist at the Fraunhofer Institute in Karlsruhe “The big manufacturers have finally clocked to what’s at stake.” Yet to win over the country’s car lovers completely politicians and business leaders may have to listen more carefully to early adopters like Steve Dumke the main big obstacle that prevented ordinary drivers from switching to electric was a fear of getting stranded between A and B “When someone like Olaf Scholz says we need to have a fast charging point at every petrol station you can tell he how rarely he uses the electric car he’s supposed to have in his garage,” says Dumke who lives in a rented fourth-floor flat and cannot charge his car at home slow but cheap charging points in areas where people actually live that has to be the motto: when you’re parking his club is fielding a team in the E-Cannonball a 70-car rally from Berlin to Munich organised by Ove Kröger Those who cross the finishing line first won’t be automatic winners a surprise perhaps in the only country in the western world not to have a maximum motorway speed limit the trophy will be awarded to those who complete the journey with the fewest amount of charging stops All type of EVs are permitted: to level the playing field cars with more powerful batteries must have 50% of power at the start and finish lines Bei manchen sometimes hard to imagine that rules do apply even in times of war Legal Advisors make a decisive contribution to ensuring compliance with these rules who is employed as a Legal Advisor with EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine she gives insights into her activities and the legal training of Ukrainian soldiers you are currently employed as a Legal Advisor with the Special Training Command I am directly subordinate to the Commander of the Special Training Command (ST-C) The focus is on providing legal advice on operations and not on working as a Disciplinary Attorney for the Armed Forces In addition to verifying the legitimacy of all orders my daily work also includes supporting the Chief of Staff and the individual divisions in all conceivable issues What distinguishes EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine in particular from previous missions in Mali and Lithuania is the training of Ukrainian soldiers in international humanitarian law Why are Ukrainian soldiers trained in international humanitarian law within the scope of EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine and how is the training conducted It is a direct EUEuropean Union task to train all Ukrainian soldiers also in the field of international humanitarian law within the scope of EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine we decided to have this important training phase conducted only by fully trained legal experts that is personnel of the military legal system of the Bundeswehr This is mainly due to the fact that only such personnel can answer the real-life questions of Ukrainian soldiers in a legally correct and adequate way The training itself is similar to the legal training provided in the Bundeswehr we first discuss the most important rules and then deepen our knowledge with case studies Why is this training so important not only for the soldiers themselves but also for the Ukrainian military in general The EUEuropean Union realized early on that the EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine training mission already indirectly intervened in the war between Russia and Ukraine it is therefore of extreme importance that the trained Ukrainian soldiers and the Ukrainian military in general represent and defend the code of values of the EUEuropean Union It is understandable that these values are not always immediately comprehensible to the individual from a subjective point of view we combine military tactics with legal foundations in order to highlight which military advantages may result from arresting prisoners of war What challenges did you have to face with regard to this legal training some 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers are to be trained at major training areas throughout Germany Especially at the beginning of the mission it was therefore not easy to employ the limited number of personnel of the military legal system of the Bundeswehr that was available in such a way that training in international humanitarian law could be ensured we have developed a well-functioning system Another challenge was to make Ukraine aware of the need to integrate legal training into the already tight training schedule much is at stake and that support will only be continued if Ukraine complies with EUEuropean Union legal standards In addition to the general legal training of all Ukrainian soldiers The training offered within the scope of EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine is always tailored to the needs of the Ukrainian military the Ukrainian military also asked for more in-depth training for Ukrainian Legal Advisors in the field of international humanitarian law The first training of this kind will start in December 2023 It will allow us to enter into dialogue with Ukrainian legal experts and exchange experiences The Legal Advisors from Ukraine are confronted with real-life national defence cases every day and are able to provide us with valuable information and insights from which we can learn we are able to objectively assess scenarios and provide legal background knowledge for any training that has taken place or will take place during the mission each training phase is conducted by legal experts of the Bundeswehr in cooperation with a soldier experienced in the relevant field of knowledge to come back to your tasks in your function as Legal Advisor what specific questions have been forwarded to you so far within the scope of this mission I have been involved in this mission almost from the very beginning I was already concerned with the question whether EUMAM UAEuropean Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine meets all legal requirements in order to become an acknowledged mission I then assessed the most diverse verification tasks and provided advice on questions that arise with the presence of soldiers of the UKR armed forces in Germany There were a lot of questions that we were able to effectively assess with all the agencies concerned A Legal Advisor ultimately has a wide range of subject matters to deal with which makes this function so exciting and versatile I look forward to continuing to support this mission as best as possible The ES15 aircraft from ECARYS is working missions around the world each day When ECARYS engineers designed the concept concentrating on how to create payload and space to provide a flexible aircraft that delivers The design is based on a 59-foot (18-meter) wingspan and a retractable tricycle undercarriage which is stable to crosswinds (up to 16 knots) and has a wide wheelbase – ideal characteristics indeed for reliable ground handling and flight operations The fuselage is divided into three sections starting with the hybrid composite cockpit module An array of avionics solutions are available Second is the mid-fuselage comprising a center steel frame compartment for the Rotax turbo-charged engine The midsection comprises the cantilever wing with flaps across the entire wingspan This provides incredible take-off and landing performance which – when combined with the speed brakes – enables the ES15 to land on airstrips inaccessible to many other aircraft The tailboom section completes the special platform Throughout each module the ECARYS engineering team can adapt and modify according to the customer’s requirements THE ES15 climbs to 7,000 feet within 12 minutes With 115 horsepower in the turbo-charged Rotax engine the performance will meet most mission objectives An operating ceiling is certified to 16,000 feet Depending on the configuration the ES15 can achieve between 10 and 20 hours of endurance Burning just 15 liters of fuel per hour means that it is an incredibly efficient and environmentally conscious platform Just as important as its maximum speed is its slow speed flight characteristics – at 50 knots it can perform 30-degree bank turns putting you in control when you need to be focused on a particular spot operating speeds are as high as 130 knots and max speed is 148 knots giving ample speed to keep on top of a moving situation The ES15 takes up a small area of hangar space as the folding wings reduce the wingspan to just 25 feet The wings can be removed for trailer or container transportation This takes less than 1 hour and requires just two people Related reading: S-PLANE electronic subsystems transform ECARYS ES15 into optionally piloted aircraft The ability to put the ES15 in a trailer or container is vitally important for operational flexibility It can be moved efficiently and be ready for operations in one hour ECARYS offer a 40-foot container which doubles as field maintenance The avionics and electrics are a bespoke solution according to the mission requirements from each customer Standard avionics are impressive and state of the art and we understand that each customer has varying requirements The Electrics are either an 1800W/28 VDC generator The Limpopo Department of Education has confirmed that Strausburg College in Namakgale outside Phalaborwa is registered with the department but is not registered as an exam center. This after parents raised concerns over the legitimacy of the institution, which offers primary, secondary and tertiary education curricula. One of the parents Evance Lamola has told Capricorn FM News that after enquiring at the Namakgale education circuit offices they were told that the college is not registered and now they fear that their children in grades 11 and especially grade 12 will not sit for exams. Another parent Molesi Maponya says they were told by the circuit that despite the college not being registered, their children will sit for exams as repeat candidates. The parents have called on the circuit manager to place their children at local schools so that they can write their exams. Director of the Strausberg College Simon Masete has disputed the allegations saying the school has been registered since 2002. He says there were delays by the basic education department to register them on the Education Management Information System (EMIS) due to their relocation from Sekororo to Namakgale, but exams will be written. Spokesperson for the provincial education department, Tidimalo Chuene says grade 12 learners will write their final exams at a registered alternative venue but trial exams will be written at the school.
