several warning strike rallies were attended by thousands of metalworkers in Germany
Reporters from the World Socialist Web Site spoke with workers from the light metal manufacturer GF Casting Solutions and the BMW plant in Leipzig as well as with workers in Stuttgart Feuerbach
Workers from all companies declared their support for a common struggle and criticized the IG Metall trade union’s 8 percent wage demand
which amounts to a massive reduction in real wages in the midst of historic price increases
The WSWS is assisting workers worldwide to establish independent rank-and-file committees made of trusted colleagues fighting to unite workers’ struggles internationally
“That's a good idea!” many workers commented on this perspective
All respondents agreed that a nominal wage increase of eight percent would be “too little” to maintain living standards
There is growing distrust among workers towards IG Metall
which has repeatedly imposed wage freezes and real wage cuts on workers in recent years
around 1,800 night shift workers took part in the one-hour warning strike at the BMW automobile factory in the north of Leipzig on Monday
who has been working at BMW since 2019 and has only been a permanent employee since February of this year
“I definitely have less money available than before
I have to stop and think about whether I can refuel my car or start heating my apartment
You have to pay attention to everything now—and it can be assumed that everything will become more expensive
In the back of my mind I always have the question: Will the money be enough in winter?”
A colleague of Celine's was stunned that the health budget and social welfare benefits are being slashed by billions of euros in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic
while the German army receives a “special fund” of €100 billion overnight: “You always wonder where the money comes from!”
we would need an 18 percent wage increase so that our standard of living does not fall,” said another long-time worker at BMW
“But I think that there won't even be 8 percent—if we are lucky
Due to the wage restraint on its workforce and its ruthless cost-cutting on parts suppliers
the BMW Group has made billions of euros in profits in recent years
the BMW Group reported a pre-tax profit of €16.2 billion with a profit margin of 24.5 percent
The overwhelming majority of striking workers share the view that the nominal wage increase of 8 percent with which IG Metall has entered backroom “negotiations” with the employers is far too low
although it itself admits that the companies in the metal and electrical industry were able to “pass on the increased energy prices to their customers” and “have increased their producer prices by 13.7 percent since January 2021.”
A report published Tuesday by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung spoke of “crushed auto parts suppliers” and “imminent devastation.” When the BMW supplier BIA Forst ceased operations this September
this meant the end of operations for 154 employees who had produced radiator grills for BMW
are accepting this with approval,” the business-friendly paper notes
But far from organizing an offensive against this profit-making orgy
IG Metall uses the “squeezing of suppliers” by BMW and other large corporations as an argument against wage increases
Under the heading “8 percent – Why so little?” the union acknowledges on its website that “according to economists’ forecasts
inflation will continue to drive prices even further in 2023.” To the question “Why does IG Metall then only demand 8 percent?,” the IGM replies that the “serious situation” for “some small and medium-sized enterprises” does not allow for higher demands
several workers at BMW in Leipzig told WSWS reporters that IG Metall was spreading the claim that the discrepancy between corporations making money hand over fist such as BMW and the bankruptcy of their suppliers makes it impossible to conduct a joint struggle between workers from the entire metal and electrical industry
Others reported that the union even stated that a “wage-price spiral”—i.e
an adjustment of wages to the increased prices—must be prevented at all costs
the IG-Metall spokesman ended the “warning strike” by setting off a table firework and sending all the workers back to the factory
When WSWS reporters on their way back to the factory stated that IG Metall had no intention of enforcing an 8 percent wage increase
many workers approached them to demand a leaflet
For the warning strike at the light metal refinery GF Casting Solutions in Leipzig
IG Metall gathered around 50 to 60 workers
which according to the several workers is barely 20 percent of the workforce
which reports on the growing support for an all-out strike in the metal and electrical industries
A pensioner who worked at GF Casting Solutions for a long time commented
we have only ever received a wage increase of around 3 percent—this has always been far below inflation
“The salaries for European Parliament deputies are always automatically adjusted to inflation; why not in our case?”
IG Metall’s “warning strike” was also ended after an hour
officials approached the WSWS reporters after just a few minutes to try to prevent them from distributing leaflets and holding discussions with workers
An older bureaucrat disparaged the reporters as “agents” and asked them to leave the demonstration with vulgar language
Another IGM official demanded that no more interviews be conducted with workers
followed the reporters for several minutes
and tried to intimidate workers who talked to the reporters
But neither the WSWS reporters nor the workers were intimidated
IG Metall organized a demonstration and a rally in Feuerbach
a traditional industrial district in Stuttgart with several thousand employees
Approximately 2,000 employees from Robert Bosch GmbH
The workers’ willingness to go on strike was omnipresent
and the bureaucrats were eager to control the situation and prevent such a development
which were supposed to rise into the air at the rally with the demand for an 8 percent wage increase
Most workers refused to accept the balloons
When the speaker shouted “8 percent,” the workers shouted “10 percent” or more
Most workers are suspicious of the negotiations being conducted behind closed doors
Several said they had heard the employers’ association demanding cuts in Christmas and holiday pay
and the union was not prepared to provide information on this
WSWS reporters also distributed the pamphlet “Collective bargaining in Germany’s metal and electrical industries: workers call for all-out strike.” When workers accepted the leaflets
who has been working at Bosch for four years
also said that he was in favour of an all-out strike
he immediately sent it via WhatsApp to a group of workers
the demand for 8 percent is not enough given the constantly rising inflation
The demand should have been 15 percent,” he explained
We all know that IG Metall would not even think about 15 percent
What's happening here is not a real fight
We can only enforce our demands through a proper strike.'
who has also been working at Bosch for 35 years
said that the offer of an additional €3,000 from the employer was a provocation
seeing that it would be less than 10 euros for a day
the negotiations never end with the achievement of the demand initially made
“This time the negotiations are different and take place in a very tense situation in every respect
I don't think colleagues would just accept any compromises,” he said

The narrow corridor is completely filled with smoke
As they fight their way forward clad in heavy equipment
the firefighters can hardly make anything out in the dark
this is just an exercise in the new breathing protection unit
which was opened in the summer of 2016 at the Bosch plant in the Feuerbach district of Stuttgart
The very demanding course in this high-tech cage is seen as the pinnacle of firefighter training and is only offered by Bosch at this very special one site in Germany: Feuerbach is currently the oldest Bosch site in the world with its more than 100 years — and the biggest
The Bosch plant fire department was founded more than one hundred years ago
when fire chief Wendelin Mayer was drafted from Stuttgart’s professional fire service to Bosch on February 10
He was instructed to set up and train a fire department for the Bosch plant in Stuttgart and Feuerbach
the idea was to prioritize fire prevention rather than simply responding to fires
1917 The first Bosch plant fire department team consisted of 40 firefighters and rescuers
Their equipment comprised an extendable ladder
Bicycle trailer with fire extinguisher
1960 Fire engine at Bosch Feuerbach site
new technical advances such as the engine-powered fire pump and motorized vehicles aided the Bosch fire department’s dangerous and strenuous work
and it was the first station in the Federal Republic of Germany to obtain a dry-powder tanker-extinguisher in 1959
The plant fire department can be proud of its historical achievement of controlling fires without any external assistance until the second world war
quite the opposite — it was the Bosch plant fire department that assisted with other local fires and emergencies back then — and still do down to the present day
Numerous volunteer fire brigades also take part in a major exercise at the Abstatt plant
Bosch Will Invest A Total Of Nearly US$2.8 Billion In The Development And Manufacturing Of Hydrogen Technologies
Bosch has begun volume production of its fuel-cell power module at its Stuttgart-Feuerbach location in Germany
which is scheduled to enter the North American market in Q3 2023
the hydrogen future is about to happen,” said Dr
chair of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH
and Bosch is growing with hydrogen.” Bosch develops technology for hydrogen production and application
the company plans to generate sales of roughly US$5.6 billion with hydrogen technology
will supply the Feuerbach factory with the fuel cell stack
such as the electric air compressor and the recirculation blower
“Bosch is one of the very few companies that are capable of mass-producing technology as complex as fuel cell stacks
but also the capability of quickly scaling up new developments to mass production,” said Markus Heyn
member of the Bosch board of management and chair of Bosch Mobility
Production of the fuel-cell power module is not only starting in Feuerbach
The required components will come from the Wuxi plant
“Bosch is the first company to produce these systems in both China and Germany,” said Hartung
one in five new trucks weighing 6 tons (5.4 tonnes) or more will feature a fuel-cell powertrain
“Only with hydrogen can there be a climate-neutral world,” the company said in a statement for Bosch Tech Day 2023
The company therefore strongly advocates the establishment of a hydrogen economy and is stepping up its investments in hydrogen
Bosch will have invested a total of nearly US$2.8 billion in the development and manufacturing of its hydrogen technologies
That is another US$1.12 billion than was earmarked in the investment plan for 2021 to 2024
The business opportunities for Bosch are huge
there are more than 3000 people at Bosch working on hydrogen technologies
Most of the vacancies can be filled from within the company
and especially with people who have so far worked in the Bosch powertrain business
the further prospects for the hydrogen business depend on the political environment
Hartung especially believes that Europe must do much more to create a counterweight to the rapid pace of developments in other regions of the world
Hartung outlined four demands of German and European policymakers
we have to step up the pace of hydrogen production in the EU,” said Hartung
hydrogen has to be used in all sectors of the economy.” As a fourth point
he stressed the importance of quickly setting up infrastructure for distributing hydrogen in Europe
Bosch Technology Starts With Electrolysis And Ends With The Hydrogen Engine
Bosch started constructing prototypes for electrolysis using proton exchange membranes
the reverse of the energy conversion method used in mobile fuel cells
the company intends to make 1.25-MW prototypes available for pilot applications and is on track to start volume production in 2025
Bosch is exploring several options for the use of hydrogen
Stationary solid-oxide fuel cells can be used for the distributed supply of power and heat
In a pilot project at the hospital in Erkelenz
Bosch wants to use this technology to achieve overall efficiency of 90%
The micropower plant there will initially run on natural gas but can be converted to green hydrogen
The company said the solution is particularly suitable for heavy vehicles on long hauls with especially heavy loads
“A hydrogen engine can do everything a diesel engine does
It also allows a fast and cost-effective entry into hydrogen-based mobility,” Heyn said
One major advantage is that more than 90% of the development and manufacturing technologies needed for it already exist
The hydrogen engine is expected to be launched starting in 2024
Bosch has four orders for production projects from all the major economic regions and expects six-figure unit volumes by 2030

Annekathrin Mueller was one of the cool kids on Bosch’s electromobility finance team when a new assignment rolled in for her
for a junior leadership opportunity in logistics
The plant was the opposite of cutting-edge
It was a new challenge and an opportunity to build her understanding of manufacturing
She would be implementing digitalization of the plant’s outdated planning and logistics system
helping workers learn new processes and gain technological expertise
And she wouldn’t be alone—the Stuttgart/Feuerbach area is also the company’s corporate hub
so there were plenty of experts around to hit up for advice
“You would think there would be more hurdles,” said Mueller
who started at Bosch in 2002 right out of high school in its three-year international business program
“But I found more open doors because we were using digitalization in high-cost locations to make work easier.”
Finally being able to order tools electronically and gaining visibility into the progression of the lines liberated frontline managers
“We had a strong international production approach,” said Mueller
“So many of our lead plants are in Germany
‘My line is the same line as in the Czech Republic
and they’re doing so much better or worse
What is going on?’ Digitalization helped that collaboration.”
in 2020 to be logistics director for Bosch’s Anderson
she became vice president and plant manager of commercial functions at Bosch’s largest plant in the U.S
The plant is undergoing a $260 million transformation
adding electrical vehicle motors and safety systems to its production
and scaling down the diesel components it has historically produced
Mueller’s career has been one big learning curve
Here are some lessons she’s learned along the way:
“My way to Bosch wasn’t manufacturing
and his Bosch anniversary books were handed down to me
Robert Bosch himself is an inspiration to me
And then they had an international business program
“I’m proud to say I’m a nerd
So the good and bad about it is if you have straight A’s
‘What are you really good at?’
“Then the international business program came on the table
Bosch has a technology-driven portfolio; it looked cool
And manufacturing kicked in 10 years later
You’re so close to the people actually contributing to the value add of the company
It’s great to hear the feedback from a bunch of hourly folks
‘There’s an opportunity coming up in Charleston.’ I had always wanted to be a plant manager
The thought had crossed my mind: ‘Could I do my boss’s job?’ It’s an exciting role
I thought I could bring something to the table
Charleston is the biggest manufacturing plant that we have
and I knew that they were going through a big transformation
When is that about to happen?’ They said ‘January.’
I was in the middle of transformation in Anderson
We were going from outsourcing to insourcing
But to leave a team when you are 80% done and 20% still lingering
Thankfully [the transition] didn’t happen as fast as they said
I had already crossed off going from Germany to the U.S
So I knew what we were dealing with in a way
let’s stay.’ They were having a good time
So that was one thing off my plate.”
"Five of my managers [in Anderson] were new
The whole team having joint lunches—that was not happening anymore
"I discussed with them whether we needed to be more intentional on leadership
“Don’t we need to do extra to bring people back
to intentionally check in on people not just per agenda
but to show that we care?” They were interested
We used some of the material at Bosch around psychological trust and positivity
and as they grew stronger and more confident in their leadership roles
"I like going back from time to time to Anderson
“I have experienced plants where there’s a lot of ‘Mommy and Daddy are not on the same page.’ Where the two plant managers are not speaking the same language
‘How do we collaborate and how do I get a voice?’ Because I have something to bring to the table
but I want to be respectful because the other plant manager has so much more experience
So I asked him—‘Can we have a daily check-in so that we can make sure we’re speaking the same language
This is getting off to a wrong start.’
“I thought he didn’t want to align with me
we have had all of our joint meetings in front of the group
So we are so aligned; we don’t need an alignment meeting
“All of my fears that we would not speak one language
that we would not drive transformation of the plan jointly because of his background being so different—it didn’t come to fruition
I’ve had the opportunity of having mentors guide me through specific programs
I reached out to our senior vice president of human resources
What would you do?’ Labor laws are different
You find kindness and approachability at Bosch
That is an underlying value that makes me stay
I’ve been lucky enough to find that throughout the company
“We have leadership training for women at Bosch
Sometimes I do feel like I’m entering a lion’s den
They can help me with technical situations
‘How do I make sure that I’m not feeling like a rabbit
“I’m thinking of a situation just this morning
interacting on a skip level with our third-shift associates
some of them came in grumpy at the end of the shift
like ‘I’m going to let them know how bad it is.’
Because my inner nature is to be the introvert
But I’m thinking of all the training I’ve had
And one of my women’s leadership coaches had said
you’re the queen of the room.’ I’m in charge of the room and I can facilitate it
‘Hey what would you do?’ All of a sudden all of the [negative] energy is out of the room

Bosch is entering the hydrogen age of mobility
the supplier of technology and services has now begun volume production of its fuel-cell power module
the hydrogen future is about to happen,” said Dr Stefan Hartung
and Bosch is growing with hydrogen.” The company operates along the entire hydrogen value chain
developing technology for its production and application
Bosch plans to generate sales of roughly 5 billion euros with hydrogen technology
In its solutions for the hydrogen economy as well, Bosch is relying on a global manufacturing network and the prowess of its German locations
will supply the Feuerbach factory with the fuel-cell stack
And important system components such as the electric air compressor and the recirculation blower come from the Bosch plant in Homburg
“Bosch is one of the very few companies that are capable of mass-producing technology as complex as fuel-cell stacks
The components it requires will come from the Wuxi plant
Only with hydrogen can there be a climate-neutral world
The company therefore strongly advocates the establishment of a hydrogen economy
and is stepping up its investments in hydrogen
Bosch will have invested a total of nearly 2.5 billion euros in the development and manufacturing of its H2 technologies
hat is another billion euros more than was earmarked in the investment plan for 2021 to 2024
there are more than 3,000 people at Bosch working on hydrogen technologies
the Bosch chairman has four demands of German and European policymakers: “First
we have to step up the pace of hydrogen production in the EU
and applying automotive experience to the hydrogen economy like no other company
This is why the company is also in demand in H2 production
Bosch started constructing prototypes for electrolysis using proton exchange membranes – in other words

Bosch is aiming to buy back and recycle its fuel cell stacks at the end of their service life
The technology group is primarily targeting the recovery of so-called platinum group metals (PGMs) that are processed in fuel cells
can be recovered from the stacks and used in new stacks
Platinum acts as a catalyst in the fuel cell
accelerating the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen
we can make the stacks more economical and at the same time reduce the carbon emissions associated with platinum mining,” says Thomas Pauer
the president of the Bosch Powertrain Solutions division
“We’re already laying the groundwork for recovering rare raw materials like platinum
Our estimates suggest that by 2030 at the latest
appreciable numbers of fuel cells will need recycling,” he adds
A first step in Bosch’s recycling plan is a contract with mobility provider Hylane that governs the possible buyback of fuel cell stacks by Bosch at the end of their service life
The Cologne-based startup rents out hydrogen trucks equipped with Bosch fuel cell drive systems
the Iveco Heavy Duty FCEV (previously Nikola Tre FCEV)
The new contract model with Hylane assures Bosch a buy-back option of the stacks for mobile applications
They are to be recycled at a third-party supplier
Bosch intends to use the recovered platinum in the following year
the contract model could serve as a blueprint for further Bosch fuel cell activities in the mobile and decentralized sectors
we can create predictable and stable supply chains and improve the availability of resources
Using recycled platinum lets us greatly reduce stacks’ absolute carbon footprint since we avoid the emissions that would otherwise occur during the mining of the metal,” says Thomas Wintrich
head of the mobile fuel-cell business unit at Bosch
Bosch began the series production of its fuel cell drive system at its Stuttgart-Feuerbach site in July
The pilot customer is US company Nikola with its H2 truck
scheduled to hit the North American market in the third quarter of 2023
Although the final assembly of the entire fuel cell system takes place in Stuttgart-Feuerbach
the stack is supplied by the Bosch plant in Bamberg and system components such as the electric air compressor or the recirculation blower are supplied by the Homburg plant
Bosch did not say in July how many units would now be produced
production of the fuel cell drive system is also starting in Chongqing
with the necessary components coming from the plant in Wuxi
Bosch is also planning to manufacture stacks for mobile applications at its US plant in Anderson

Bosch leaders said their hydrogen technology will help the trucking industry—in major global economic markets—meet decarbonization goals faster than relying on battery-electric technology
With fueling times similar to diesel—and much quicker than recharging batteries—hydrogen has the potential to fit more easily into U.S
Bosch’s head of Fuel Cell Mobility Solutions
said during a House of Journalists press briefing
Hydrogen and fuel-cell adoption and success in the trucking industry will come down to total cost of ownership
which has 15,000 employees and first opened in 1910
“The driver is always TCO in the trucking industry,” he said
“If you have the infrastructure and you can create TCO
which it seems Nikola can do for the trucks
Creating hydrogen fueling infrastructure and fuel costs comparable to diesel
would help trucking leaders see the TCO opportunities for hydrogen fuel cells and internal combustion engines
Initial Bosch fuel-cell customers in Europe and China have been able to get “in the region of 800 kilometers (497 miles) running time” per fueling
“That seems to be something which is really helpful for long-distance trucking
the short fueling time is an advantage nowadays
and it will be an even bigger advantage when you think about automated driving because you don’t have the pauses for the driver anymore.”
which must sacrifice several tons of cargo payload for large batteries and long recharging times
hydrogen fuel cells and engines potentially offer similar refueling times and range to diesel-powered trucks
“That is exactly where we need the breakthrough to show that the maturity level—even with this completely new process
this completely new supply chain—really works,” Wintrich said
“We now have a chance to connect experiences with our first customers
It’s not only with Nikola but also in China
We have already collected nearly 3 million kilometers (1.86 million miles) on our trucks in China.”
Bosch expects to generate 5 billion euros ($5.36 billion) through hydrogen technology developed within its global manufacturing network
such as the electric air compressor and recirculation blower
Along with production that has begun in Europe and China
Bosch plans to manufacture fuel-cell stacks for trucking applications at its plant in Anderson
Bosch executives said one in five new heavy-duty trucks worldwide will run on fuel-cell powertrains by 2030
Bosch will invest nearly 2.5 billion euros ($2.68 billion) in developing and manufacturing hydrogen technologies
more than the supplier initially planned to invest in 2021
the company has argued that hydrogen is the only way the world can achieve climate neutrality
Bosch began constructing electrolysis prototypes using proton exchange membranes to produce hydrogen to power mobile and stationary fuel cells
Bosch announced it will begin making 1.25-megawatt prototypes for pilot applications; volume production is planned for 2025
The company is exploring several options for hydrogen use
Stationary solid-oxide fuel cells can be used for distributed power and heat supplies
company representatives explained during the plant tour on Sept
It is starting a micro-powerplant pilot project at a hospital near Cologne

the second world war ended with a quiet surrender on April 22
The city’s mayor officially handed the city over to the commander in chief of the French troops following their arrival just a day earlier
industrial production — which had already virtually ground to a halt anyway — was shut down immediately
the plants in Stuttgart and Feuerbach were only capable of working at limited capacity
and the lack of raw materials had become alarmingly acute
one-quarter of the workforce had consisted of forced laborers who had been assigned to the company by the government
The responsibility for their fates was passed to the Allied authorities when the war ended
It would take many laborers years to return to their homes
some 15,000 had to be let go because there was no more work for them
The few remaining Bosch associates picked up shovels to begin rebuilding the company
they had to dig their way to their workplaces
Some 30 percent of the main plant in Stuttgart had been completely destroyed.Much of the company’s production machinery had been moved to rural regions to escape the full brunt of the Allied air offensive
The associates in Stuttgart not only had to clear away rubble and debris
but also to retrieve and reinstall the machinery that had been sent for safekeeping to more than 100 different outlying locations
Unable to obtain sufficient fuel for motor vehicles because of postwar shortages
associates used handcarts and other improvised means of transport to move small machines and components over distances of up to 40 kilometers
the board of management thanked the associates for their dedication
Bosch was still faced with scarcities of certain raw materials and with the restrictions imposed by the allied occupying powers
Bosch produced everyday items such as saucepans using the raw materials that were available
It did so partly to meet the urgent demand for these essential household goods in the bombed-out city
but also to provide work for its associates
Bosch still applied its traditional standards
as a memorandum issued by the board of management in May 1945 confirmed: “Still
we do not want to produce cheap goods of average quality
it was the spark plug that re-ignited Bosch’s fortunes
After Germany had been divided into zones of occupation
the French troops handed Stuttgart over to the U.S
and its vehicles soon needed new spark plugs and batteries — a golden opportunity for Bosch
the restrictions on automotive technology production were lifted
and the most challenging period in Bosch’s history came to an end

Bosch has just launched series production of its “fuel cell power module” at its plant in Stuttgart-Feuerbach
The US startup Nikola is the first customer with its Class 8 hydrogen truck set to enter the North American market in Q3 this year
Although the final assembly of the fuel cell system will take place in Stuttgart-Feuerbach
the supplier emphasises its reliance on a global manufacturing network and the “prowess of its German locations” fuelling the hydrogen economy
the stacks for the Feuerbach production come from Bosch’s plant in Bamberg
The factory in Homburg delivers system components such as the electric air compressor or the recirculation fan
such as the number of power modules being produced
“Bosch is one of the very few companies capable of mass producing technology as complex as fuel-cell stacks,” said Markus Heyn
“We don’t just have the required systems expertise
but also the capability of quickly scaling up new developments to mass production.”
The company has begun producing the fuel cell drive in Chongqing simultaneously with production in Germany. In China, the Bosch plant in Wuxi supplies the components. And Bosch reportedly plans to manufacture stacks for mobile applications at its US plant in Anderson
“Bosch is the first company to manufacture such systems in China and Germany,” says Stefan Hartung
chairman of the board of management on Bosch Tech Day 2023
“Bosch knows its way around hydrogen
and Bosch is growing with hydrogen.” The company targets to generate roughly 5 billion euros in sales with hydrogen technology by 2030
At this year’s Bosch Tech Day, however, Nikola’s Tre truck for the US market was not on display. Press photos show the European model, the Iveco Heavy Duty FCEV – Iveco had bought Nikola’s shares in the European joint venture based in Ulm at the beginning of May and subsequently renamed the division from Nikola Iveco Europe to EVCO
Bosch also did not mention Nikola’s plans to localise the supply chain and
assemble Bosch fuel cell power modules in Coolidge to reduce the material cost of the trucks
Bosch reaffirms its conviction that “Only with hydrogen can there be a climate-neutral world”
a fuel cell will power every fifth new commercial vehicle weighing six tonnes or more
the supplier wants to invest almost 2.5 bn euros in developing and producing its H2 technologies – one billion more than initially budgeted for 2021 to 2024
this is not only about solutions for (heavy) vehicles but also about hydrogen generation
Bosch started prototype construction for the electrolysis process with proton exchange membranes – this is the reverse of the energy conversion in the mobile fuel cell
the company plans to provide 1.25-megawatt prototypes for pilot applications and says it is on course for a start of series production in 2025
more than 3,000 people work at Bosch on hydrogen technologies
mainly with employees from Bosch’s powertrain division
the further prospects of success for the hydrogen business are linked to the political framework
must do much more to counterbalance the strong dynamics in other regions of the world
the Bosch chairman formulated four demands on German and European politicians: “First
hydrogen has to be used in all sectors of the economy.” As a fourth point

The Bosch chairman has four demands of German and European policymakers: “First
we have to step up the pace of hydrogen production in the EU (European Union)
hydrogen must be used in all sectors of the economy.” As a fourth point
he stressed the importance of quickly setting up infrastructure for distributing hydrogen in Europe.
Bosch wants to use the technology to achieve an overall efficiency of 90 percent
“A hydrogen engine can do everything a diesel engine does
It also allows a fast and cost-effective entry into hydrogen-based mobility,” Heyn said
The H2 engine is expected to be launched starting in 2024.

There has been an update on the series production of fuel cell systems for trucks and cars that Bosch plans to launch in 2022
The Group presented a new prototype in Stuttgart and has named their first customers
At a press conference in the German region of Stuttgart-Feuerbach, Bosch showed journalists its new fuel cell for trucks on the system test bench. Bosch has already received its first series orders. They are not limiting themselves to the axle system, such as the hydrogen trucks for the U.S. startup Nikola will be supplied with the entire fuel cell system
“We expect the fuel cell to have a market share of 13 per cent in heavy commercial vehicles in 2030,” says Jürgen Gerhardt
Bosch CEO Volkmar Denner states that up to 20 per cent of all electric vehicles could be on the road with fuel cells by 2030
The supplier wants to reduce the currently high costs (about three times those of a diesel engine) by increasing production volumes
but Bosch did not mention specifics in this regard
The German company pointed out that the “expected higher CO2 price” would cause the cost of diesel trucks to rise
The stack does not come from Bosch itself, but from Swedish fuel cell specialist Powercell. The cooperation has been in place since April 2019
and in November the famous German supplier also bought a financial stake in the Swedish company
The technology developed by Bosch and Powercell can also be transferred to cars
According to the Bosch CEO their first customer is also a carmaker
But he did not mention the name of the carmaker
since VW boss Herbert Diess recently told corporate executives that the fuel cell was “not an alternative to car engines for a foreseeable time horizon of at least a decade.” He added that the subject was being taken back to basics
Bosch is one of the few global automotive suppliers still organised as a limited liability company and not as a stock corporation
Bosch is feeling the effects of declining car production worldwide as well as declining diesel demand
Increasing this burden are weaker markets in China and India and the costs of restructuring the mobility division
sales for 2019 stagnated at 47 billion euros
with group-wide sales of just under 78 billion euros
Earnings before interest and taxes fell from 5.3 to 3 billion euros
“Considering the situation around us
we can be satisfied with this,” said Denner
“Despite the challenging economic situation
we continue to invest in important growth areas
In its announcement on its business figures
Bosch states that it will spend 500 million euros this year” on electromobility alone
Denner continues to reject battery cell production in the company’s product profile
With the more complex fuel cell technology
the supplier not only wants to stand out but also to secure jobs
employment at some of the Bosch locations that is dependent on combustion technology is now on unsteady ground
the company has set up hydrogen projects at precisely these locations
over 3,000 jobs will be lost at German sites

Business in the automotive industry is weakening – including at supplier Bosch
Plans for job cuts have now been announced again
In view of the crisis in the automotive industry
The exact number would depend on discussions with employee representatives
It was initially unclear how many jobs would be affected in Germany
The savings plans therefore affect around one in eight of the approximately 3,100 employees worldwide
were working in Germany at the beginning of July
The “Heilbronner Stimme” had previously reported on the plans
The spokesperson cited the situation in the industry as the reason for this
intelligent driver assistance systems are not in as much demand as expected
The job cuts are to be made as socially responsible as possible
which rules out redundancies until the end of 2027
Etas develops basic software for various car manufacturers and other suppliers
its portfolio also includes cybersecurity solutions for vehicles
The wholly-owned Bosch subsidiary based in Stuttgart generated turnover of 499 million euros in 2023
The technology group has been announcing job cuts for over a year now
more than 12,000 jobs could be lost at Bosch worldwide
The majority of these are in the supplier division
jobs are also to be cut in other areas such as the tools division
Protests against the redundancy plans have recently taken place at several Bosch locations in Germany
The automotive industry is in crisis in the face of the weak economy and is suffering from meagre demand – especially for e-cars
plant closures and job cuts are on the cards
IG Metall is mobilizing against this with warning strikes
Continental and Schaeffler also want to cut thousands of jobs
