Johann Matthias Sperger (1750-1812) was a name that was new to me
He was a distinguished Austrian contrabass virtuoso and composer with a significant body of work to his name
Born in Feldsburg in what was then Austria but is now Valtice in the Czech Republic
his name may well originally have been Jan Matyáš Sperger
He studied in Vienna and may have been a pupil of Albrechtsberger
From 1777 he worked for the Archbishop of Pressburg (now Bratislava)
He then went on extended concert tours that made him famous as a contrabass virtuoso and composer
In 1789 the court of Archduke Friedrich Franz I in Ludwigslust (a Baroque palace some 40km south of Schwerin) appointed Sperger to the position of principal contrabass in the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Court orchestra
Sperger produced some forty symphonies and numerous instrumental concertos
There is a chance to hear one on 23 February at Kings Place when Leon Bosch directs The Hanover Band in the first modern performance of Sperger's Cello Concerto in C with soloist Sebastian Comberti in a programme that also includes Cimarosa's Oboe Concerto (with soloist Geoff Coates) and symphonies by Haydn and Mozart

The questions tourists ask most frequently when they visit Venice are: is Venice sinking
(not really) and will it be submerged like Atlantis
since the effects of sinking ground (subsidence) and rising sea level (eustatism) have combined to create a net altimetric deficit of at least -25cm in Venice over the last century
With the evident effects of climate change
this is not a good position to start from for a city that exists essentially at sea level
Venice was indeed sinking even faster up until the 1970’s when mainland industries in Marghera used to pump out massive quantities of water from the underlying aquifer
those deleterious practices have been halted and Venice is back to sinking at a “normal” rate of around one centimetre per century
Unfortunately the 10-12 centimetres lost to subsidence in the first few decades of the postwar economic boom are gone forever and Venice has to deal with a global rise in sea level starting from an unfortunate altimetric deficit of its own making
Floods have been a fact of life in Venice since time immemorial
Ever since its founding – one thousand years ago – the annals of Venice have recorded a plethora of catastrophic floods
In any age – past or present – high tides (acqua alta) have invariably been caused by exceptional storm surges created by strong winds pushing water from the Adriatic into the Venice lagoon and keeping it there
which has been rising steadily since scientific measurements began in the late 1800s and is forecast to continue rising inexorably for the foreseeable future
as more and more ice melts away from the gigantic ice stores of Antarctica and Greenland
Unlike subsidence, eustatism is not a problem that can be solved locally. Due to its global nature, it can only be mitigated, as Venice has managed to do by constructing the MOSE barrier that protects the city from flooding by sealing the four main channels that connect the Venice lagoon to the Adriatic sea. [LM1] Altogether
the four inlets are equipped with 78 independent mobile gates that rise up from the bottom of the channels and block tides up to 3m high
This major national infrastructure project was designed to handle a 60 cm increase in mean sea level over the next 100 years and was estimated to cost over 3 billion euros at the time
If mean sea level rises globally by more than 60 cm – as it is unfortunately likely to do – the MOSE gates will not suffice anymore
MOSE was always understood to be an interim solution that will need to be replaced someday
There are lessons to be learned from the history of the MOSE project
which was first conceived in the wake (pun intended) of the devastating floods (alta marea or acqua granda) of 1966 when a catastrophic tide of biblical proportions covered the city with almost two meters of water
spurring a global movement to “Save Venice” and prevent such a cataclysm from ever happening again
the Italian Government passed the “Special Law for Venice” (1975)
Another 20 more years went by before UNESCO listed the city and the lagoon as a world heritage site (1987)
riddled with dozens of lawsuits and appeals
the first stone of the massive public work was laid
almost 35 years after the original event that triggered the belated response
Just when all the hurdles were overcome and work had started in earnest
leading to indictments of the top echelon of the Consorzio as well as several political figures
including the Mayor of Venice and the Governor of the Veneto region
The resulting criminal inquiry halted the project completely and it took years to pick up the pieces of what was left of the Consorzio
which was placed under external supervision by the National Anti-Corruption Agency
work on the MOSE resumed after a post-scandal hiatus of over 5 years and all 78 barriers were in place by early 2019
more than 50 years after the 1966 event that gave rise to the project
Just as the final tests were being conducted
in November of 2019 Venice experienced an unrelenting string of massive floods for a whole week
One (that of November 12) was the second highest in history and four more made the top-20 list of all-time high tides
Since most Venetian businesses are located on the ground floor
they were utterly devastated by the relentless tides of that catastrophic week
COVID locked down the city just 4 months later
making Venice’s physical as well as tourism-dependent economic fragility evident to everyone
the government expedited the permits to allow the MOSE gates to be used for the first time on October 3
one year after the disastrous floods that could have been prevented
saving untold amounts of money for the Venetian and national economy
Venetians have gradually become more and more complacent
to the point that they do not even think much about tide alerts anymore – a testament to the reliability that MOSE has demonstrated so far
The project was way beyond schedule and way over budget
There are many other problems to deal with
so it is nice to be able to forget about the problem of high tides
the gates will need to be closed more and more frequently
greatly impacting maritime traffic to the Port of Venice and gradually affecting the entire lagoon ecosystem
we shall reach a point when the gates will be closed so often that we shall need a more definitive solution to protect Venice from flooding
The gates will have reached their expiration date
A “Dutch solution” (polderisation) may be in order at that point
with earthen dams and berms to seal off the lagoon and protect it for good
Gates and pumps will probably be part of the final intervention to allow water circulation when possible and keep the lagoon at least somewhat viable for aquatic flora and fauna
It will not be the same lagoon as we have now
but we may be able to salvage some semblance of the current ecosystem
quite soon the world will be faced with the choice between saving Venice or saving the lagoon
Since it took us 50 years to come up with a temporary solution
it may take us 100 years to construct a permanent system to protect Venice long term
The lesson we learned from MOSE’s history is that we must not wait until it is too late
We certainly do not want to repeat the fiasco of 2019 when we were not ready in time
We should be planning now for the post-MOSE solution to protect Venice in a permanent way
we should also learn from the Covid-19 crisis
which exposed the vulnerability of the Venice economy because of its near-total dependence on travel and tourism
Just as we have to reckon with the inevitability of rising sea level
we would be wise to plan for a future pandemic (or other global crisis) which may grind world travel to a halt
Such a scenario is perhaps less predictable but almost as likely over a 100-year span
Should we not try to make the Venice economy equally resilient to outside events
Venice has lost three quarters of its population since the last world war
mostly because of the lack of job diversity
the less likely you are to find a job in Venice
where the economy is monopolised by low-paid and low-skilled tourism jobs
While everyone may agree that large sums of money should be invested to protect the physical Venice by means of some Dutch solution (even at the expense of the lagoon ecosystem)
we need to ask who are we saving Venice for
Should we not invest equal sums of money to stem the tide of tourists
should we be equally concerned about the altra marea
the “other tide” of visitors that is just as detrimental to the livelihood of the city as floodwater
which is loved by so many people in the world
requires more than saving the physical city by means of permanent barriers
Venice’s future will hinge on the ability to be a “real city”
capable of retaining its own young people and attracting new citizens in addition to tourists
Venice needs a thriving non-touristic economy to be a real living city
Only when both the container (Venice) and the content (the Venetians) are preserved and allowed to thrive shall we be able to say that this jewel of humanity will be truly preserved

where the old stone prison looms like an imposing poltergeist
One of her first tasks in 1963 was to order a hanging rope for the last Iowa execution
he'd heard prison stories and wondered about the men who came and went
disturbed murderers who were executed or embezzlers who turned into kind souls
So when he found out the Iowa State Penitentiary was closing
the photography hobbyist asked if he could take a look around
Back in a dusty shed were dozens of wooden boxes
he found hundreds of glass-plate negatives
The negatives were like X-rays held up to the light
But when Fullenkamp reversed the negatives digitally
they became a metaphor for how we look at criminals
Those scary ghosts became the images of men — many not seen in over a century
Thus began a preservation project that's taken on a life of its own
Fullenkamp is director of Web services at the University of Iowa
historians and library archivists — have been eager to help
They wore big wool prison coats of the era
unlike the prison jumpsuits they arrive in from today's county jails
Fullkenkamp saw fear and uncertainty about what was to come
Those faces and stories needed to be preserved
Fullenkamp has embarked on a volunteer project to invert and digitize more than 11,200 glass-plate negatives with the blessing and assistance of the Iowa Department of Corrections
Phase one is complete with the help of prisoners at Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville
often asking for the stories behind the faces
Now Fullenkamp is working on matching faces with names and stories and one day hopes to produce a book
He brought English doctoral candidate Gemma Goodale-Sussen to the project in May
was taken by the faces popping up on the computer screen
"They are on the precipice of their former life and being an inmate," she said
"Do they know that their lives are changing?"
They would look at the negative image from the 3-by-4-inch or 5-by-7-inch plates
you're suddenly seeing a face that hasn't been seen in 100 years
Inmate numbers loomed behind their heads in early photos and were later attached to uniforms
which changed over the years from heavy woolen coats with big buttons and checkered patterns to stripes on thinner smocks and coats
Inmate number 4439 looks like a bald town doctor in the negative
Fullenkamp guesses most others had motivations for looking tough upon prison intake
"The eyes are everything," Goodale-Sussen said
While she often sees weariness or sadness in those eyes
Fullenkamp sees uncertainty and nervousness
"Everyone projects his own feelings onto these photos," he said
Then a series of coincidences made the project almost eerie
Boxes of deteriorating intake papers holding inmate information were also found
but the paperwork and photos have yet to be matched
Fullenkamp began asking around about what was known about the face of one man or another
he heard an author tell of his book about a man
who faked his own death by putting a drunk in a building and burning it down
He was later caught because the skull found in the ashes wasn't his own
The kicker that startled Fullenkamp: Novak became the prison photographer
Novak took many of the photos that he had studied
as Fullenkamp tried to find more information on inmates
president of the North Lee County Historical Society and a local expert on everything related to the prison
I love this," Andrews said of Fullenkamp's project
"Prison staff don't have time to go through them
and all we've had is inmate numbers with no name and in no particular order
So when family of former inmates requested information or photos
Andrews gave him some of the few files he had on notorious inmates
One of them carried the name "Lundquist," a man who at age 19 killed a police officer
Goodale-Sussen was telling Fullenkamp a story about an inmate from a book she was reading
She described a man who had lived in the prison for 40 years
and for 30 of those years he had never had a visitor
After an Iowa newspaper wrote about him around Christmas
gifts and letters flooded the inmate's cell
He began sharing them with inmates who also got no letters or gifts
He so captivated Iowans that women began writing to him
The inmate was eventually granted clemency because of his prison decency
and Goodale-Sussen found out he moved to the Waterloo area to be with his wife
A quick search of the 60 photos Fullenkamp had inverted out of 11,000 revealed a surprise
"That's him," Fullenkamp told his colleague as the image of the long
but some of the coincidences seem to have some magic in them," he said
The old prison is one of the oldest buildings in Iowa
It's always been a major employer and strong presence in Fort Madison
Andrews used to see a convicted murderer riding his bicycle every day in town on his way to give haircuts to "old folks in the home and invalids."
residents still heard the noon bell at the prison echoing through town
within months the old stone prison will sit empty
City and state officials are devising plans on what to do with the buildings and the leftover materials inside
often sitting in boxes or sheds like Fullenkamp found
"A lot of our storage is not appropriate for these types of historical documents," said John Baldwin
director of the Iowa Department of Corrections
"Eventually these glass plates wouldn't hold up
We really wanted a record of what the old (prison) was like
Fullenkamp's work spurred interest in a symposium on prison projects among academics and others that was held Saturday at the University of Iowa
One motivation was to discuss preservation and further study on many aspects of incarceration
Fullenkamp hopes eventually to produce a public online archive of the faces and names as a record of history
but also one that puts a face on society's attempts at correction
With ArcGIS Business Analyst, you can use demographic, consumer, and business data to create presentation-ready maps and analyses. Two of the best ways to share Business Analyst results are to create an infographic or create a dashboard
you don’t have to choose between these two formats—ArcGIS Business Analyst and ArcGIS Dashboards have long partnered on an in-app integration
Many Business Analyst users are familiar with the basics of sharing infographics in dashboards
providing guidance for creating a custom infographic and editing a dashboard made through Business Analyst
By leveraging the design and configuration options of both platforms
you can create a sleek dashboard displaying your custom infographic
Here’s a quick overview of how you can customize both infographics and dashboards to share information in an interactive
Note: This workflow can be done with ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App Advanced
Business Analyst includes many interesting and insightful infographics
the standard infographic templates are almost perfect
but might not include some of the variables that help tell your story
we are working on a project to show the use of public transportation in the Chicago area
to understand how people are getting around
We’ve discovered a standard infographic template – Commute Profile – that’s almost exactly what we need to tell this story
It includes information on how workers get to and from work
since we are focused on public transportation usage
we can take this template and customize it to “zoom in” on that topic
On the Reports tab in Business Analyst, we can build custom infographics using templates of existing infographics
we’ll choose the Commute Profile template and swap out some of the variables and panels
we’ll replace the site summary panel with an infographic panel showing aggregate spending on public transit in the site area selected
we hover over the panel and click Edit to modify its contents
we’ll change the title and remove some of the text fields and replace them with a variable and an icon
we will display the 2022 Intracity Mass Transit Fares variable
we want the variable in the “Workers” section (currently showing the percentage of people who drove alone to work) to instead show people who took public transportation
we can hover over the panel and click Edit
and this time we want to keep the panel layout
We sub in the 2020 Workers 16+ Took Public Transportation variable
from the American Community Survey dataset
we swap out the old icon for one that represents public transportation
We’ll build our Interesting Facts panel to be based on variables that relate to public transportation
An Interesting Facts panel highlights “outlier” data
displaying variables that are distinctive to the site compared to others
the interesting facts panel displays transportation-related variables for which the site falls in the top 5% or bottom 5% of all areas
Now that we have an infographic more aligned with what we want to present about public transportation usage, we can go through the Business Analyst workflow to create a dashboard
For this project, we want to see the data for each ZIP Code, so we have already added sites for those areas in and around Chicago using the Select Geography workflow for creating sites
Going through the Business Analyst dashboard creation workflow
we choose Many sites as the dashboard type
we can select all the sites we want to include (in this case
This dashboard on its own is ready to share
We can edit our map and dashboard to include more visualizations and data that help tell a larger story about public transportation in Chicago
As part of this project to understand public transit use in the area, we have layers from the Chicago Transit Authority
and tables showing the monthly ridership for each route
This data can complement the infographics we have in our dashboard to help tell a larger
We can add this data to the map in our dashboard that was created in Business Analyst
we’ll open the map of sites created with Business Analyst and edit it to include this data and match our dashboard aesthetically
The map already has our sites that were created in Business Analyst, so now we want to add the transit route layers. The transit routes layers are feature layers with line geometries representing individual bus and train routes
Since the layers only contain the locations and names of the routes
we’ll also add associated tables that include ridership stats for each route
The tables include ridership data that is not stored in the feature layers themselves
we’ll use the tables’ data in our dashboard to power our added visualizations
For the map’s look, since the dashboard we created is in the dark theme
we’ll change our layer styling for the sites so that they are transparent fill
just displaying the outline of each ZIP Code
Now that the map is styled and we’ve added additional data to it
we can edit our dashboard to visualize more
we click Edit Dashboard from the window that appears when the dashboard is created
we can open ArcGIS Dashboards and access our dashboard from there
Next, we can include trends and key information that we don’t have in our infographic already. We can visualize average ridership over time for both bus and train routes, and ridership averages by day for each route, by adding other dashboard elements
For ridership over time, we’ll add a serial chart in the right of the map
The chart shows total ridership of all bus routes per month (using the bus ridership table as its data source)
but this time showing total ridership of all train routes per month (using the train ridership table as its data source)
so viewers can switch between bus and train information using the tabs
For ridership averages by day, we’ll add a grouped value table showing the average bus rides and a second one for the average train rides. We’ll add them above the charts and stack them again.
The data and customizable infographics of Business Analyst, combined with the visualizations in ArcGIS Dashboards work together to unlock trends, insights, and key information that present data in new ways and help inform decisions.
The curvature of the bridge and the abutments being at different levels presented a special challenge for the Aalen-based contractor, Stark. A task that was accomplished very well with NOEtop wall formwork. The challenge:
Construct the foundations, abutment walls, carriageway deck, road surfacing and the parapet rails on the farm access bridge for the B466 bypass in southern Germany.
The Süssen Bypass in southern Germany is intended to relieve through traffic. An overpass was built as part of this project. Andreas Stark GmbH & Co. KG from Aalen was awarded the contract to build the overpass. The contractor decided to use NOEtop wall formwork manufactured by NOE-Schaltechnik, Süssen.
The new 1.3-mile bypass includes the construction of a 91-foot-long, 19-foot-wide bridge. This bridge takes a farm access track over the new B466. It was built by Andreas Stark GmbH & Co. KG from Aalen. At Süssen, the contractor's task was to construct the foundations, abutment walls, carriageway deck, road surfacing and the parapet rails on the farm access bridge.
The entire bridge had to be concreted in one pour to ensure the structure would act as a portal frame. This presented the contractor with several challenges.
Since the volume of the abutments is quite large, there was a risk that the heat of hydration of the cement would produce temperatures of 113°F or more in the concrete, which could lead to it cracking. In addition, the bridge is built to a slight curve, which meant that the contractor's concreting gang had to work "uphill". Added to this is the asymmetry of the bridge, with one abutment being higher than the other, which makes concreting operations even more difficult.
"NOEtop made our work much easier — which was one crucial reason why we opted for NOE," said Giuseppe Maniscalco, the site foreman. "Another was something that the site team knew they could rely on: when the need arises, a NOE expert is always available and able to come up with a solution."
This isn’t the article I was supposed to write.
As the director of health equity at the Roosevelt Institute
I research and write about the health dimensions of race
But I’m also a mom of three kids between the ages of three and eight
I have experienced and analyzed what’s happening in my family
in my community and in the world more broadly
(I will note upfront that I recognize the extraordinary privilege I have to be part of a household where both parents still have a paying job.)
Ten days ago I started writing a hard-hitting analytical piece about the chilling attempts of conservative lawmakers to exploit a global pandemic to erode abortion access
On a normal week it would have been something I could have turned around in a day
I felt the time slipping away as other people published the piece I meant to write
This is just one of the ways I’ve seen the coronavirus reveal the fault lines within many of our homes
in our places of work and in the economy more broadly
The coronavirus has laid bare many divisions in our society
it has elevated the extent to which structural sexism permeates our lives: impacting the gendered division of labor within the home and also shaping what is possible for women
A quick scroll through Twitter explains exactly what I’m talking about:
tbf husband a key worker and flat out but as per usual
Currently have four jobs – home schooling
trying to work and making a sandwich mountain each day
My experience certainly isn’t universal: There are many different family configurations operating in different ways during this challenging time
For me, I’m joined by mothers everywhere in having found myself shouldering the lion’s share of the household labor over the last few weeks: We have prepared the vast majority of the meals
cleaned up our kids messes throughout the day and navigated telemedicine calls with our pediatricians
We’ve done the majority of the at-home teaching
setting up our own laptops at our kids’ make-shift workstations
so we can serve as teacher and IT technician while attempting to do our own jobs
We’re often the point of contact for our kids’ teachers: In fact
one mother told me recently that when her child’s teacher emailed the original at-home learning instructions to parents
she only included mothers—but that has since been corrected.
I woke paralyzed with panic about my kids’ physical and mental health
and about my husband and me staying well to care for them
I was panicked for my mother and her colleagues who are like family to me
all of them laid off when the restaurant they’ve worked at for more than 30 years closed due to COVID restrictions
I was panicked not knowing how the COVID nightmare would unfold and what we would be when this all ends
I laid in bed with my kids and soothed them when they told me they were scared and sad and didn’t know when they would see their friends and family in real life again
I attempted to dramatically reorganize our daily life to accommodate our new reality.
I know it’s a mark of my privilege that there have been few times when I’ve had to parent from that place of panic
I’ve reflected a lot about how exhausting it’s been to put on a brave face to reassure and calm my children in a time of endless uncertainty while feeling anything but brave.
So many mothers I know have had stark reminders that we can only hold so much for so long
There have been more days than I’d like to admit when I hid in the bathroom to cry between participating in work conference calls and administering Google classroom tutorials
after an hour of asking my kids to please not throw a ball in the kitchen
one of them accidentally slammed into me while I was making pasta
it wasn’t a big deal—bless them for making their own fun on a rainy day during an abysmal time
But the internal tightrope that had been growing increasingly taut snapped
quickly left the room and fell to the ground against my bedroom door and sobbed
And then I pulled myself together and joined my kids for lunch
giving them hugs and loving and comforting them as best I could
Pushing down the panic until it escapes again.
The women I know shouldering a disproportionate burden of the household and emotional labor aren’t doing so because our husbands are misogynistic assholes
In fact, three weeks ago, most of us—proud feminists and progressives—would have said we shared the burden of parenting relatively evenly. (I say relatively because research shows that, despite couples feeling they have egalitarian relationships, women still do the lion’s share of domestic labor.)
Because structural sexism is always lurking just below the surface
ready to rear its ugly head and quickly upset any semblance of intra-household gender equity.
Think about how structural sexism plays out in the economy and
Women make only 82 percent of what their male colleagues make, and Black and Latina women make 61 and 53 percent
Only 24 percent of women have salaries higher than their husbands
Only 19 percent of all U.S
and men are far less likely to take time off than are women
The minority of women who are lucky enough to have time off after childbirth or adoption face an extraordinary parent penalty later on. Women’s earnings drop significantly after the birth of their first child
and they end up earning 20 percent less than their male partners over the course of their careers
There is no comparable salary drop for men
but it also is bad for men: It locks them into rigid and often toxic definitions of masculinity that make it harder for them to achieve work-life balance and more equally participate in family and home life
but they’re stuck in a system that makes it hard to achieve
This system normalizes a culture where paid leave is a privilege and not a right—which especially hurts lower-income workers who are the least likely to have access to care
What all of this structural sexism adds up to is that in many heterosexual relationships
the male partner earns more than the female partner
when decisions need to be made about the economic security of our families
the job that brings in more money takes priority
This is particularly true when a historic crisis threatens the stability of the higher earner’s job or industry—as COVID is doing to so many jobs and industries today
Many women I’ve talked to understand and appreciate this dynamic—in fact
many of us sympathize that our partners are shouldering such a heavy burden of our financial wellbeing
it can be a tough pill to swallow as we attempt to shift our expectations
quell our fears about what this moment means for our own careers and earning potential
and reconcile our new realities with our own feminist ideals.
This imbalance that’s playing out in our homes—and the extraordinary toll that a crisis like COVID is taking on all working parents—significantly impacts how we show up at work and how we perform relative to those who have fewer or no childcare responsibilities
During the first two weeks of social distancing
mothers in the progressive policy space shared with each other frustration over how hard it was to write and been seen for our ideas
Carving out time to write during these tumultuous days was painfully challenging
this piece was written in bed long after the kids were tucked in
on a backlit iPhone screen so I didn’t wake my partner
Lately I find that swirling amidst the toxic storm of emotions that course through my body every day—panic
longing and also gratitude—is a strong and steady current of rage
Rage at the willful ignorance of our national leadership
Rage that we live in a country so drugged on notions of rugged individualism that we all live in fear of the ways a shift or loss of employment would impact our health and our ability to care for our families
Rage that women need to hold so much more than our hearts and brains and arms have room for
And that the whole system feels more broken than it ever has
This is the rage that authors like Rebecca Traister and Brittney Cooper have so powerfully given voice to.
How can we not feel rage when we think about how the imbalances of COVID are unfolding against a relentless backdrop of stark gender inequities and injustices
Women’s labor is underpaid and underappreciated
The person making decisions about our lives gets to be president even after admitting to sexually assaulting women
and while he degrades women from the podium on a daily basis
Women are routinely harassed and assaulted at their place of work
Lawmakers care more about controlling our bodies than they do about keeping us alive
The people who literally hold up our economy—on their backs
like my mom—are those who will be most quickly left behind and will pay the price of our government’s negligence for the rest of their lives
the world we re-enter likely won’t feel safer or more equitable
All that makes it so much harder to adjust to the weight of any imbalances in the scales of our households
The other day someone asked me how work was going
I joked that my male colleagues are on the path to becoming “COVID famous” while I am learning elementary school math
Because fuck if I can write a book right now.
The coronavirus pandemic and the response by federal
state and local authorities is fast-moving
is keeping a focus on aspects of the crisis—especially as it impacts women and their families—often not reported by mainstream media

You can now save your POI search criteria in BA Web App
Click the ‘Save search’ button in the Search interface and give your search criteria a name
Note that the former ‘Professional Specialty’ field has been folded into this new
richer Specialty field and is no longer available as a standalone attribute
The second attribute addition for this release is a field called Location Parent Relationship
which provides information on the relationships between businesses that share a common location
the pharmacy section inside a grocery store might be designated as a department
whereas the coffee shop that is also inside the grocery store but a completely different company would receive the value of separate in this field
Did you know you can symbolize Business Locations by the building size
This capability was released earlier in 2024
Data Axle provides an approximate square footage estimate for most business locations that can now be used to symbolize business points in your map
If you are interested in identifying the large shopping centers
In our banner image at the top of the article
sushi restaurants in Southern California are symbolized (using a nifty custom symbol we made) by minimum square footage
and below we are showing the same concept with warehousing and transportation businesses along I-10 around Phoenix
Esri Business Summaries aggregate Business Locations from Data Axle for specified North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) categories
Business Summaries were only released once a year
these summaries will be released three times per year
along with the associated Business Locations release
You can use wildcards in your NAICS and SIC code searches
try doing a Primary NAICS search and type 31 into the Code search box and hit return
Then press the Search button to see your results
The Esri Business Summaries provide ready-to-use information by business category for standard geographies (such as ZIP Codes)
There are many business category aggregations to pick from
The figure below shows a smart map search using Business Summaries for Wholesale Trade
We hope this has been a useful update on enhancements to business data in the June 2024 release

Hungary will withdraw its ambassador to the Netherlands for an indefinite period of time after the Dutch ambassador in Budapest made critical remarks about the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán
said Hungary will take “political and diplomatic steps” if the Netherlands does not formally apologize for remarks by Gajus Scheltema
Scheltema said in an interview with magazine 168 Óra published Thursday — days before he will leave his post as ambassador — that the rhetoric of the Orbán administration is similar to that used by terrorists in the Middle East
Scheltema said the terrorists behind last week’s attack in Barcelona were “losers of globalization” who “use extremism and fanatic religion.” He added that they “create enemies according to the same principle as the Hungarian government.”
Szijjártó called the remarks “shameful.”
“This is an accusation that nobody has made before,” he said
The Dutch ambassador is not welcome in the Hungarian ministry
Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders on Friday distanced himself from the remarks
made a comparison between the acts of terrorists and the Hungarian government,” Koenders said
He did not say whether the government will officially apologize
“I have not yet spoken to the minister,” he said
while adding that he wants to talk with his Hungarian colleague in the next few days

A group of cyclists on holiday in Mallorca were hit by a bus driver on Thursday
leaving one rider dead and three others seriously injured
in an incident that has prompted an investigation into possible mechanical failure
The crash happened at around 12.25pm on the Ma-2200 road linking Pollença to the port
The Transports de les Illes Balears (TIB) bus
struck four foreign cyclists before crashing into a tree
A 48-year-old Ukrainian cyclist died at the scene, while a 42-year-old Kazakh and a 43-year-old Russian suffered multiple severe injuries and were taken to Son Espases Hospital in Palma. A fourth cyclist, a 40-year-old woman, was treated for a hip fracture at Inca Hospital, reports Majorca Daily Bulletin
Several ambulances and the local police were quickly dispatched
with a doctor who happened to be nearby the first to alert emergency services and confirm the fatality
The crash also injured four of the 16 passengers on board the bus
and a six-month-old baby treated for minor injuries
Authorities said the bus eventually veered off the road and came to a stop after hitting a tree
The Guardia Civil’s Traffic Division have opened an investigation into the cause
exploring the possibility of a mechanical failure in the bus’s steering or braking systems that caused the driver to lose control
> British cyclist dies during Mallorca 312 event
One person familiar with the TIB buses commented on the incident
saying: “I travel on these buses nearly every day
Their suspensions are shot and clanking along when they hit the ‘sleeping policemen’
“Not to mention weak springs and further rattling noises from steering
especially when overloaded with standing tourists and residents who are only allowed to travel on one bus
The airport and Palma buses run almost empty
Gross incompetence and totally inefficient.”
Another cyclist who witnessed the aftermath of the incident said that one of the injured cyclists gave him a thumbs-up
although “his bike was a mangled carbon wreck”
> “We used to have a life”: Chants of “no more cyclists” at anti-tourism protest in Mallorca as residents complain of tourists driving up cost of living
expressed its condolences and pledged full cooperation with investigators
The crash led to significant traffic disruption along the Ma-2200
with island council teams deployed to clear debris and remove the wrecked bus
The incident comes just days after British cyclist Phil Williams died during the Mallorca 312 Gran Fondo
a national 25-mile champion riding for Team Bottrill and Liverpool Braveheart BC
reportedly suffered a medical incident during the sportive near Valldemossa and tragically died despite medics’ attempts to resuscitate him
In January, six members of the German national track team were hospitalised after being hit by an elderly driver in Palma while on a training ride ahead of the European Track Championships
The riders included 2024 world championships medallists Benjamin Boos and Bruno Kessler
with the team only comleting 2.7km of the ride as national coach Lucas Schädlich witnessed the collision from a support car
A statement from German Cycling later confirmed their riders were involved
the federation corroborating reports that some of the group had suffered “serious” injuries
the group’s bikes were “completely destroyed by the impact”
> Mallorca motorcyclist under influence of drugs who killed cyclist after hitting group ride head-on released with charges
Mallorca, one of the most sought-after locations for international tourists for many years, has seen several high-profile collisions involving cyclists. Two years ago, a Polish cyclist on holiday in Mallorca died after a motorcyclist, who later tested positive for drugs, lost control of his Harley-Davidson and smashed into a group ride near Pollença
In 2018, a motorist struck a group of nine German riders, killing one. The driver, Anais Marco, was jailed for three years after being found guilty of manslaughter in July last year
with the court noting her “serious violation” of driving rules
Although Marco tested positive for marijuana after the crash
the court ruled there was insufficient evidence to convict her of driving under the influence at the time
New Spanish traffic regulations introduced at the start of 2025 now require drivers to slow down by at least 20km/h when overtaking cyclists and to maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 metres
as authorities attempt to reduce the number of cyclist fatalities on the roads
