Problem-centered interviews (Witzel and Reiter, 2012) with Turkish-German families are used to trace the role kinship networks play in interethnic partnerships The interviews were conducted with the two spouses and their children (if they were older than eight) All family members were interviewed together to observe and capture communication and negotiation processes within the couple and between generations Family interviews allow to investigate how family members talk and reflect on kin relations and relationship quality Thereby communication and negotiation processes between family members can be observed Data collection took place between March and July 2020 and was challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences In order to draw the appropriate sample of Turkish-German couples for the study, population registration offices were contacted who hold information on all residents of a given area. Among other things, their nationality and place of birth are recorded and linked to spouses (see also Glowsky, 2013) Several population registration offices in large cities were contacted only Hamburg agreed to provide its data to meet the needs of this study Using an onomastic technique a suitable sample was chosen from a provided list of 7,237 addresses of spouses with partners born in Turkey This condition was not only important to have a potential high range of values between the partners but also increased the possibility of transnational relations to their respective families The participants (in case of children legal guardians) provided written informed consent to participate in this study The interview guide contained various themes and sections that arose from the project context The research guiding themes are essentially organized around three questions: first how do they pass that on to their children Themes of the interview guide were family and kinship we only focus on the relevant sections of family relations and kinship The interview guide and its specific narrative prompts were pretested with several interethnic parents a postscript was written to record the atmosphere of the interview it was necessary to translate for a father from Turkish into German This was done by his wife and daughter during the interview itself each with one to four children aged one to 27 Children of nine families also took part in the interview—if they were above eight and available (six daughters only the mother and daughter were interviewed this interview was not included in the analysis The age of the spouses ranges from 34 to 68 years wives were slightly younger than their husbands the assigned codes were extracted and summarized Descriptions of the similarities and differences within the families are the main component of the result presentation The goal is to present the specifics of solidarity in interethnic families Different from most other research on family solidarity in this research not only older parents and their adult children but also their (grand-) children and other family members are to some extent part of the analysis the analysis is based on the perspective of the interethnic couple We will therefore not address reciprocity of the described relationship age and origin will be considered in analyzing the organization of intergenerational support The period during which the study was conducted was challenging for intergenerational relations due to the COVID-19 pandemic Some contact between households was limited due to quarantine measures This circumstance had a slight impact on habitual interactions between family members living either in Germany or abroad flights were on hold and visits to Turkey not possible for a few months the data collection had to be interrupted for two months The following part presenting our empirical results is structured by the six solidarity types as defined by Bengtson and Roberts (1991) and described above which sets the opportunities for family members to interact with each other is embedded in special circumstances for bi-national families In this study the relatives of the Turkish side do not live in Germany in most cases whereas the relatives of the German side do As earlier mentioned in the description of the sample some of the Turkish parents live or used to live in Germany of which one parental couple continues to live in the same country as their child In two other families Turkish parents are divorced and only one parent stayed in Germany most of the Turkish parents live in Turkey in the same city or even in the same house as their children eight German children live away from their parents in which the relatives live in different countries forms the basis and particularity of the family studied here regular contact with parents and other extended family members was reported more frequently with those living in Germany than in Turkey this means that close contact was not established between parents and their grandchildren it was mentioned that the community aspect was fundamentally stronger in Turkey Not only parents and other relatives would contribute as support in caring for young children but also neighbors and acquaintances from the family network there is evidence that a parent's health condition or financial situation plays a role in how often support is provided and what kind of intergenerational solidarity is possible It also has an impact on overall contact between parents and children Visits involve higher costs for families whose kin live in Turkey as they usually take more time and flights have to be paid for This presents a financial challenge for some families One way to mitigate this challenge is to combine family vacations with family visits This is discussed in more detail in the section on associational solidarity below The COVID-19 pandemic changed the frequency of contact between generations slightly although the impact of contact restrictions were not addressed often within the interviews Keeping in touch with parents in Turkey via videophone over different messengers enabled to maintain the frequency and mode of interaction Flights to Turkey to visit parents on the other hand had to be postponed until further notice A lack of social network was particularly evident during this time often in terms of distance to both families in Turkey and Germany Most of the interviewees reported contact with their parents The families interviewed typically visit the Turkish part of their family of origin regularly during vacations Personal contacts with parents living nearby in Germany take place more frequently than with family members in Turkey This includes contacts between grandchildren and their grandparents Frequent contact also takes place in the form of telephone calls These contacts are more frequent with the Turkish relatives It is striking that statements about interactions with the German family were made less frequently compared to the Turkish side of the family some of the Turkish relatives live in Germany which has an influence on the frequency and occurs more regularly Some families do not have close contact with their Turkish parents and have not visited each other for several years but more out of obligation to the older generation Holidays are typically celebrated with all generations together At least parents of both origins are called at these special occasions This was mentioned for Christmas or Eid al-Fitr (Ramazan Bayrami) and Eid al-Adha (Kurban Bayrami) it was reported that the Turkish partner in the bi-national family visits his or her parents in Turkey even without the spouse and children and outside of a vacation parents or siblings of the Turkish partner come to visit sometimes less frequently on special occasions Contact with the German side of the family is more regular which is also due to the fact that these families live closer together (sometimes in the same house) spatial distance is not the only determining factor as the travel distance from Turkey is sometimes at least in theory shorter than from Germany if the parents live in rural regions in southern Germany The following interview summarizes the complexity the distance between my husband's parents and Hamburg is closer because the flight time is only 3.5–4 hours and to my sisters and to my mother it is 5.5–6 hours by train For both of us family is very important I would say We often have difficulties here or start floundering so not only that family is important to us but also now with regard to our son we would find it nice if he could spend more time with aunts […] And we have nevertheless the luck that my sisters comes for example very often to visit but has his own family and is very involved.” (Female partner of the interethnic couple intergenerational relationships are characterized by warmth and affection which is particularly emphasized describing the Turkish side Close ties are also maintained with siblings Despite initial reservations about the interethnic relationship of their children in most cases the sons or daughters-in-law were warmly welcomed into the extended families the bond between kin and interviewed families is less strong Although there are annual visits between them the relationship is less close and warm than in most others The relationship between the respective in-laws is rarely mentioned the reinforcing effect on cohesion within the entire family is emphasized Close family relationships are described with both extended families those in Turkey as well as those located in Germany But associating family relations with warmth occurs less frequently in German families than in Turkish ones While emotional closeness is emphasized in the context of Turkish families granting freedom to pursue own goals is mentioned more frequently in German families The different expression of affection can be traced in the following quotations And the grandparents are always open for that as well.” (Female partner of the interethnic couple “My parents gave me a lot of freedom to make decisions within certain limits And my parents would have been happy if I had stayed nearby And I visited them as often as possible and talked to them on the phone and wrote to them and sent photos And we still have a good relationship.” (Female partner of the interethnic couple It was striking that the interviewed couples more often described disagreements with their parents due to different beliefs and attitudes than they reported agreements It became clear that these differences were much more important at the beginning of the Turkish-German relationship than in later years often based on the parents' reservations about their offspring's interethnic marriage In addition to the frequently mentioned uneasiness of the parents due to prejudices against the nationality of the child-in-law especially different religious affiliations met with reservations This was more prevalent on the Turkish than on the German side of the family The grown-up children therefore either compromised and feigned religious conversion to their parents or disobeyed their parents' instructions Consensus between parents and children was reported in the way holidays are celebrated when rituals are adopted and holidays are celebrated together children performed a ritual wedding for the sake of their parents To not upset their father (-in-law) his daughter and son-in-law only pretend to practice the Muslim religion most parents are satisfied with their offspring's interethnic marriage when they see them living in a happy relationship and getting to know their in-laws Despite the differences in everyday practices the acceptance of being different is high among both generations Another topic where parents' and children's ideas do not always correspond are parenting issues parents of the interviewed families hold views on parenting that the spouses do not agree with The circumcision of grandsons was a frequent cause for disagreement the children usually flout their parents' ideas R1: “And the doctor looked at my son [for a possible circumcision] But it wasn't because he was crying Somehow I had the feeling that I was doing something bad to him ‘And when are you having the circumcision party?' And my husband said that's not possible with him The doctor said it won't work for him I don't think it was okay for my parents (R1: Male partner of the interethnic couple expectations and norms regarding marriage and religion and parent-child-roles into this solidarity category Families show gender role attitudes across the spectrum: Traditional role models are promoted by the interviewed spouses as well as egalitarian ones Country of origin seems to play a subordinate role within the couples traditional expectations are more frequently demanded by Turkish relatives than by German ones Demands for the appropriate partner regarding marrying a Muslim were expressed outright from Turkish fathers toward their daughters in two cases And he loved him [my husband] very much and liked him and so A woman can't marry with a Christian or a Jew and so But if a Muslim man wants to marry a Christian or Jew or something But a woman is not allowed to (marry) before played along.” (Female partner of the interethnic couple the couple pretends to the Turkish family that the German husband has converted to Islam They feign conversion to Islam in order to conform to their father's religious ideas Other couple handles these gaps in attitudes differently they adapt their behavior in their parents' environment Normative expectations also exist from the German side but they are mentioned less frequently and seem to be less strong adjustments are made less frequently when the parents are present both partners adapt to the gender expectations of their respective in-laws: The German daughter-in-law subordinates herself to the Turkish family and the Turkish son-in-law entertains guests at German family celebrations we've become such a well-coordinated team If I'm in the vicinity of the Turkish family then I just do what the Turkish woman does But when we meet the German side or are invited it is often the case that my husband stands up and asks who would like a beer That we know exactly what each side actually wants.” (Female partner of the interethnic couple Overall, functional solidarity is mentioned more frequently for the German side of the kinship than for the Turkish side. Functional solidarity can be differentiated in the type and direction of support, for the later distinguishing between upward support (i.e., help from the child to the parent) and downward support (help from the parent to the child) might be helpful (Bordone and de Valk, 2016) In Turkish families, it is rather the parents who support their children, so-called downward support. For German parents, upward support was more often indicated. As Table 2 shows seven families have teenaged children and in five families children are grown up This can also be used to estimate the care needs of the (in-law) parents of the couples German mothers need daily care because of health issues They are living together with their child's family like in childcare for grandchildren or household chores Support from the Turkish side of the family is less prominent Maternal support was reported after births financing and organizing the circumcision feast as well as advice in upbringing methods reveals classical gender division of labor the wife takes over the care for German parents in case of illness no matter if she cares for her own parents It is also sisters or mothers who come regularly or for visits to assist with child care Sons (in-law) and fathers (in-law) rather take over the organization of celebrations and practical help Denied support was also mentioned when Turkish parents tried to impose their will One example of denied downward support was a daughter's demand that both grandparents should not interfere in her grandson's religious education mutual support either with Turkish or German kin does not take place since Turkish and German relatives live nearby Living far away from their own parents is more often a source of worry for the Turkish partner in the couple Especially when they get older and their need for help increases The following quote shows that it is difficult to maintain support between the generations in a transnational setting which is often not possible due to the distance a move to Turkey is discussed between the couple and considered as an option for retirement “They're not the youngest either in one situation or another I would have said being there at that moment would have been good because so to speak I'm the oldest son and that I then have to slowly take over my father's role she also has to slowly take over my mother's role And then sometimes my father wishes that I am there and in some situations I also wish that I am there.” (Male partner of the interethnic couple Our aim is to contribute to the existing literature by considering solidarity types in a transnational space in bi-national families The results illustrate that there are indeed differences between Turkish and German extended family members in terms of intergenerational support Conflicts between generations due to the interethnic relationship of the partners do occur these were mainly observed in consensual and partly normative solidarity Conflicts arose within families mainly due to parental reservations at the beginning of interethnic relations Especially daughters are confronted with these challenges The families interviewed seem to have found their way to deal with such challenges and the solution seems to lie in compromise it cannot be stated that it is generally closer on one side of the extended family the connection with the Turkish parents is not as close as with the German parents Language was mentioned by the interviewees as a possible reason for the close relationship between the generations Being able to speak the same language can create more closeness in the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren but was not always a prerequisite for a close relationship Cohesion in German families tends to be expressed through concrete support we found close and less close relationships in the sample the structural dimension seems to play a central role in bi-national couples due to the transnational nature of kinship relations The raw data supporting the But other matters quickly became priorities: removing “Tent City” by the foot of the Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge and finding shelter and permanent housing for about 120 homeless people; addressing tidal and stormwater flooding which hits the low-lying Charleston peninsula especially hard; and backing an effort to address racial and economic disparities and injustices that the city itself helped to create over the centuries Tecklenburg presided over a growing city where the cost of living was becoming an unsustainable burden to many and the angry response to police killing George Floyd in Minneapolis Then came the stronger storms and floodwaters One of the biggest challenges entailed managing projects committed or underway, and ensuring that city staffing was robust enough to get all the work done. In 2015, Tecklenburg created the Citizen Service Desk a clearinghouse to receive complaints and suggestions determine priorities and assign tasks to city departments too many calls ended up in the bureaucratic black hole the desk was getting 7,000 calls a month and generating 1,500 corresponding work orders “The little things actually got done,” he said Tecklenburg oversaw the relocation of the public works facilities, the construction of a new fire station in West Ashley, the establishment of a forensics center for law enforcement and the expansion of the Charleston Nine Memorial Park a monument to the firefighters who died in 2007 battling a blaze at Sofa Super Store along Savannah Highway He staffed up, and staffed well. He reduced the number of vacancies in the fire department from 80 to about 10. He hired a community-minded police chief, Luther Reynolds He appointed Ruth Jordan to run the Minority & Women-Owned Business Enterprise Office He created a new stormwater department and put Matt Fountain in charge who has served as Tecklenburg’s chief of staff because they didn’t believe they knew as much about a particular issue than Joe Riley did,” Jerue said Riley had been mayor 40 years and a cunning leader to whom others tended to defer “So a big challenge was to convince people that risk-taking was OK Tecklenburg organized a monthly department meeting devoted to an infrastructure issue such as zoning The mayor was just as informed about the issues as his colleagues He operates with both sides of his brain.” but it has helped to have a mayor who considers the effort essential Tecklenburg worked with City Council to secure a $20 million bond in 2017 meant to fill in funding gaps and add affordable units to the local real estate market the bond sale funded eight projects and more than 500 new units Other initiatives have resulted in more workforce and affordable housing He wants to actually know what’s happening.” He prefers a collaborative approach. Tent City was a big problem that required several government agencies and nonprofits to work together The mayor called for weekly meetings that involved law enforcement “I was impressed by all of us being able to come together like that and bring about the change that was necessary,” Johnson said When she wanted to establish a land bank, Tecklenburg hit the pause button, arguing that it should be a regional project that included the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, Charleston Redevelopment Corporation More stakeholders surely would bring about a more robust solution Tecklenburg needed to pivot between long-term projects and acute problems Like roving vandals on the night of May 30 Like the challenge of removing the John C. Calhoun monument in Marion Square Like a sudden, late-night brawl on May 9 Like stormwater and tidal flooding that inundated parts of the city Like the pandemic Peter Shahid, a longtime city councilman, ran for mayor against Tecklenburg but never gained sufficient momentum to challenge the incumbent or his main adversary who ultimately prevailed in a close runoff election who had been assigned to chair the West Ashley Revitalization Commission said he chose to run in protest of the mayor’s perceived inability “to close the deal,” and because of what Shahid characterized as a reactive approach to governance Tecklenburg should have insisted on the prosecution of the perpetrators of the King Street violence He should have done more to improve West Ashley He should have articulated a clear vision for the 65-acre Union Pier property on the waterfront Tecklenburg has been a compassionate caretaker; he should have been a visionary The mayor gave his police chief leeway to manage the May 2020 riot Shahid said he appreciated Reynolds’ leadership It was the aftermath that was the bigger problem “The community needed to hear from their leader that this was not going to happen again,” he said The firm leadership of former Mayor Riley is what Shahid prefers over Tecklenburg’s collaborative and conciliatory approach “The mayor needs vision to determine the course of the city,” he said. “ ‘Here’s what I want.’ ” But too often consensus was not reached regarding what to do with remnants of Citadel Mall or the Sumar Street property once home to a Piggly Wiggly grocery store at what was supposed to be one of West Ashley’s suburban gateways “He got hooked into this seawall business,” Shahid said Ah, the seawall The Army Corps of Engineers developed a plan to encircle most of the peninsula Experts insist that anything less will guarantee increasingly devastating tidal flooding which generates enough income to pay nearly half of the city’s bills you lose the city,” Chief Resiliency Officer Dale Morris said The average high tide today is around 6 feet It only takes 7 feet of mean-level water to inundate much of the peninsula Climatologists say sea levels near Charleston will rise 10 to 14 inches by 2050 and 10-foot tides could become a monthly occurrence That’s why Tecklenburg has become a staunch advocate of the wall especially since most of the cost — 65 percent or about $850 million — would be covered by the federal government It would be folly to turn down that kind of financial support given the acute threat The work that’s been done in recent years to improve underground floodwater infrastructure should protect the peninsula even when the tides reach 10 feet or more and the complexity of the challenges are growing,” Morris said The Dutch Dialogues is a consultancy enterprise set up by The Netherlands and meant to share lessons learned and solutions devised in a country whose name translated into English is “Low Countries.” More than one-fourth of the flat fertile and populous country lies below sea level and about 60 percent of the territory is susceptible to flooding so engineers and politicians have had to come up with some creative solutions Morris worked for The Netherlands Embassy in Washington as an economist and water expert Tecklenburg wanted him in Charleston full-time Charleston has earned a reputation globally for not only being a canary in the coal mine but also a place whose leaders are taking action Tipping points remain a bit vague until we’re on the other side looking backward; only then do we realize we’ve reached them So there’s no time to spare if Charleston is to avoid relocating whole neighborhoods he’s eager to talk about this,” Morris said “A certain bravery is required to change the zoning is that he has set the stage for bold climate action “The mayor has left a well-functioning city behind,” Morris said Tecklenburg often has in mind a certain comment made by Martin Luther King Jr.: “What good is having the right to sit at a lunch counter if you can’t afford to buy a hamburger?” King was speaking of the need to address entrenched poverty among African Americans poverty that is the result of centuries of oppression For Tecklenburg, progress requires economic solutions: more home ownership among African Americans and more business entrepreneurship. That’s what creates capital; that’s how wealth can grow over generations He followed through by creating a racial conciliation commission The commission spent a year studying the issues and assembling a long list of recommendations for action City Council provided tenuous support — until the day came to receive the commission’s suggestions included three ideas that had become hot potatoes: devising a reparations plan teaching critical race theory in the schools and reallocating some police funding He pressed on with his agenda to create more affordable housing and a business incubator and he continued to address historical wrongs He’s glad he helped resurrect the Interstate 526 extension project “The single most effective roadway improvement for the region is to finish the Mark Clark as it was originally intended,” he said adding that it would include bike and pedestrian paths and that an effective Lowcountry Rapid Transit System would depend on a completed loop He’s glad he got 1,711 workforce and affordable housing units built or in the pipeline He’s glad he got the zoning review started Significant changes are needed for Charleston to get ready for more climate change impacts build more housing and manage gentrification “We’ve been as proactive as any jurisdiction in the state,” he said “But we’re up against a 500-pound gorilla — we’re up against the real estate market.” And Tecklenburg is glad the city has an effective staff in place ready to tackle an array of challenges He wished he could have pushed through more zoning revisions and ensured that the large apartment buildings approved long before he became mayor but constructed during his time in office could have included more affordable units “It’s not too late for the city to do that,” he said More apartment buildings will go up in coming years The city’s rules should incentivize developers to embrace economic diversity “You add up the little stuff and it wasn’t nothing,” he said with a hint of a smile “I don’t think we told the accomplishments as effectively as we should have,” he said “People tend to forget the good stuff quickly It’s the things they get pissed off about that they remember.” So Tecklenburg will dive into his notebooks about Fud Livingston The former mayor will consider his great-uncle’s musical contributions and legacy Tecklenburg will write about him and surely think about his own contributions and legacy “I put my heart and soul into this city,” he said All I’ve learned led to me being able to do this job.” Contact Adam Parker at player and win the Women's World Cup The 51-year-old made 125 appearances for her country in her playing career retiring in 2000 before Germany's World Cup wins in  2003 and 2007 A demanding but approachable coach who has compared herself to Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp Voss-Tecklenburg is hoping to be crowned world champion from the dugout in 2019 Germany face Nigeria in the last 16 on Saturday having won all three of their group games without conceding a goal Voss-Tecklenburg has warned that Nigeria will be "a tough nut to crack" but her team are already looking formidable in France Once the undisputed European power in women's football Germany are enjoying a resurgence under Voss-Tecklenburg The 51-year-old took over from interim coach Horst Hrubesch in November with the national team reeling from a turbulent few years After winning the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics under legendary coach Silvia Neid Germany's aura faded under Neid's successor Steffi Jones and Hrubesch brought in to steady the ship Since Voss-Tecklenburg the Germans have remained unbeaten ever since "There are more teams at the top of the game these days but we are still among the best in the world," Voss-Tecklenburg told AFP subsidiary SID before the tournament Yet she warned that Germany would have to "overcome challenges" if they were to reach the latter stages of the World Cup The Germany coach knows a thing or two about overcoming challenges her mother banned her from playing football and she had to sneak out to train in secret She would later become one of Germany's most iconic players winning four European Championship titles in the 1990s Her international career ended abruptly in 2000 after a falling out with her team mate and then partner Inka Grings She has balanced motherhood and a period as a full-time office clerk with a successful coaching career Following spells in charge at women's Bundesliga sides Duisburg and Jena Voss-Tecklenburg led Switzerland to their first ever World Cup appearance in 2015 "Martina was the first coach to convince us of our own abilities," former Swiss captain Caroline Abbe told Le Temps in 2018 Voss-Tecklenburg prides herself on her motivational and communication skills comparing herself to Juergen Klopp in a recent interview with broadcaster ZDF "I see myself a lot in the way he does things He works in a way which I think is good for players and people generally," she said who Voss-Tecklenburg made Germany captain in January told SID last month that the coach had been a "formative figure" in her career and she always has a clear plan of what she wants." What Voss-Tecklenburg wants in France is attacking football and "We want to play passionate and creative football," she told Kicker magazine in April "It may be necessary to reach the last four to qualify for the Olympics because only the top three European teams will qualify and I think there are many European teams who have a chance of winning the World Cup," she told SID ahead of the tournament and their hard-headed coach Voss-Tecklenburg is on a mission to return her country to the very top Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg spent much of his career as a businessman and entrepreneur–a family legacy that began with the opening of his great-great-grandfather’s corner grocery store at St Mayor Tecklenburg founded Southern Oil Company in 1978 which he successfully owned and operated for nearly 20 years he was appointed to serve as Director of Economic Development for the City of Charleston where he helped lead the revitalization of Upper King Street Mayor Tecklenburg holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Georgetown University in Washington DC and also attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston where he pursued his lifelong passion for music and jazz Mayor Tecklenburg has been committed to improving citizens’ quality of life and making Charleston a city of opportunity for all Among his efforts to improve city-wide livability Mayor Tecklenburg has paid particular attention to flooding and drainage relief appointing the city’s first-ever Chief Resilience Officer and beginning the process of implementing the City of Charleston Flooding & Sea Level Rise Strategy which outlines actions designed to make the city more resilient to effects of increased disasters and changing weather Mayor Tecklenburg has also led initiatives to address housing affordability and homelessness in Charleston These have included the closing of Tent City a sprawling homeless encampment that had developed in our North Central neighborhood and the formation of the Mayors’ Commission on Homelessness and Affordable Housing which works to develop a long-term regional approach to these challenges most comprehensive renewal and revitalization effort in our city’s history Modeled after the successful Downtown Revitalization Commission of the 1970s and 1980s the West Ashley Revitalization Commission is working directly with citizens to implement Plan West Ashley which will guide the area’s development for years to come Mayor Tecklenburg and his wife Sandy are the proud parents of five grown children – Melissa They reside in the Old Windermere section of West Ashley Business & Finance  Techonomy Partner Content Leading Advisors Women & Worth Magazine & Digital Edition Leading Advisors Directory Become a Leading Advisor Contributors Media Kit Partnerships Reprints & Permissions What’s motivating the Palmetto State’s “paper of record” to be a one-sided mouthpiece for the status quo incumbent Dylan is covering this race insightfully and objectively – which is more than can be said for the “paper of record” in this contest Ever since this race started, the Post has been nothing short of a propaganda organ for the campaign of incumbent mayor John Tecklenburg it hasn’t been especially honest in its attempts to shade public perception in Tecklenburg’s favor it has even attempted to rewrite history related to its own prior reporting on one of the race’s defining issues … public safety the paper’s recent editorial endorsement of Tecklenburg blatantly contradicted its own prior coverage of the violent downtown rioting that took place on May 30 Forgotten about that? It’s when Charleston police stood down and allowed the widespread looting and destruction of the city’s historic King Street district According to the paper’s own reporters city police made it abundantly clear what their orders were on that fateful day “Nobody’s getting arrested tonight,” one Post reporter live-tweeted Former county sheriff Al Cannon also left no doubt as to what went down during that spasm of lawlessness “The city’s position was that they were not going to arrest and we followed that lead,” Cannon said at the time citing the police department’s jurisdiction over King Street as Dylan pointed out in his coverage … “Its a very basic concept: The mayor should have told police he would support them in enforcing the state’s laws and Cogswell pledges to not repeat that mistake,” he wrote The riots were just part of the worsening public safety problem Tecklenburg finally acknowledged crime in Charleston was higher than average for a city its size – but he blamed the problem on state legislators claiming the city was “prohibited from taking action.” Earlier this week, the Post‘s status-quo sycophant/ “metro columnist” Brian Hicks penned another gratuitously pro-Tecklenburg pamphlet with a wafer-thin basis in reality That Holy City residents should use their ballots to vote against “chaos” (a.k.a supporters of Cogswell who are pushing for change on the local school board) “If Charleston residents want to keep chaos out of City Hall, they’d better vote next week,” Hicks noted proceeding to equate several recent endorsements received by Cogswell as part of some sort of Watergate-level conspiracy – and their attendant political fallout as constituting some sort of stain on the sanctity of the Holy City’s political discourse “There hasn’t been this much chaos at Broad and Meeting since the British shot the arm off our William Pitt statue,” Hicks wrote summoning a level of righteous indignation I haven’t encountered since binge watching Dance Moms with my two daughters Are Hicks and the paper’s editorial and reporting staff really unaware that Tecklenburg has given them much more to be righteously indignant about in this race Or … are they just unwilling to cover those things The Post‘s editorial board and its featured columnist are not supposed to be impartial I’m just saying the opinions expressed therein are demonstrably false I’m saying the paper’s so-called “objective” reporters are being particularly selective in what they cover (and don’t cover) in this race and I’m also saying Hicks is a pearl-clutching candy ass whose work reads like a tear-smudged letter to the editor of Teen Vogue But while “fluffers gonna fluff,” the bigger question Charleston voters should concern themselves with is what is motivating the paper to be so aggressive in its support for the incumbent mayor. Who is pulling its strings … and why. Because let’s face it: That’s been a problem at the Post in the past Seriously: Why won’t the paper report on Tecklenburg’s abysmal record as a private business owner Or offer something resembling a reality-based recapitulation of his tenure as mayor For example, Tecklenburg claims to be have founded the Southern Oil Company in 1978. Yet, the late U.S. senator Fritz Hollings took to the floor of the U.S. Senate upon the June 1993 death of the mayor’s father, Henry Tecklenburg saying he lost a tremendous friend who had been chairman of Southern Oil for nearly three decades Once the son took the reins of the company, lawsuits and judgements hounded him for years. Capital Insurance Company was one firm successful in winning a judgement against Southern Teck, while the National Bank of South Carolina (NBSC, now Synovus) took Tecklenburg to court over $2 million in unpaid debts another bank sued the mayor for nonpayment in a real estate mortgage case With so many city projects massively over-budget isn’t it worth exploring the mayor’s record as a businessman Tecklenburg’s sketchy track record has continued as mayor, including a variety of ethics controversies which include questionable office spending and alleged nepotism Tecklenburg was also accused of self-dealing related to the estate of an elderly black woman with Alzheimer’s who had the misfortune having him appointed by the courts to manage her finances You know … probate fraud while the über-liberal politician was running for mayor Tecklenburg loaned himself $25,000 from this woman’s estate – without receiving prior approval from the court “Living expenses” for Tecklenburg as he campaigned for public office Two other loans totaling $55,000 were made from the estate in previous years – also without prior court approval Those proceeds were earmarked for a business run by Tecklenburg’s wife “The transactions show apparent self-dealing,” Charleston probate judge Irv Condon noted in a ruling removing Tecklenburg from his role as the woman’s conservator “The transactions show that John Tecklenburg made unsecured loans to himself and his family members’ businesses.” Tecklenburg was also at the center of an ethics debate regarding his son, Joseph Tecklenburg who is a commercial realtor/ developer like his father The mayor advocated for the city to purchase a building owned by his son’s bosses City council members questioned the appraisals and council later scrapped the deal due to its price – and conflict of interest concerns So why has the Post and Courier been so quiet about Tecklenburg’s record? And so disingenuously vocal in attacking his rival in next week’s election? Many downtown insiders believe it all stems from the the cozy relationship between the mayor and the owner and chairman of the Post and Courier, Pierre Manigault Manigault has been redeveloping his property in downtown Charleston at Columbus and King Streets He and his business partners have big plans for this area – plans which are currently sailing through City Hall the former home of the Post and Courier – located at 134 Columbus Street – was shuttered and is scheduled to be leveled to make way for more development Insiders believe Manigault wants Tecklenburg to remain in office so his development plans will not be hindered by a new mayor – one who favors renovating existing buildings rather than tearing them down and erecting mammoth commercial properties that generate more money for Manigault and his partners Is this what’s motivating the paper’s full-court press for Tecklenburg I understand Cogswell wants to exploit Tecklenburg’s weakness with black voters but he should have immediately marked that endorsement “return to sender.” Gadsden is a cancer on the body politic in the Palmetto State – a definitional “dividerer” – and Cogswell is now infected with her divisiveness I suspect he would govern Charleston with the same failed “tax-and-spend” philosophy … Cogswell is the quintessential “lesser of two evils,” and while there are some willing to lend their imprimaturs to such “choices” at the polls – I am not among them Voters in the Holy City have a difficult choice ahead of them on November 21 I’m not going to tell them what choice to make in the hopes of greasing the skids for some project accruing to my personal benefit My outlet is going to continue providing them with the facts – as evidenced by Dylan’s insightful and I’m obviously going to keep telling them what I think of those facts … no matter what “chaos” may ensue Will Folks is the founding editor of the news outlet you are currently reading he served as press secretary to the governor of South Carolina He lives in the Midlands region of the state with his wife and seven children Got something you’d like to say in response to one of our articles? Tecklenburg explained details of each loan; $20,000 in 2011 and $35,000 in 2014 for his wife Sandy's business Tecklenburg said each loan was repaid in full plus interest The mayor wrote that had no idea he violated any rules "I'd just like to say that I wish I had understood the need for preclearance on these transactions from the very beginning and that I'm genuinely sorry for any questions that has raised," Tecklenburg said "During that time neither Sandy not I have profited in any way from the many hours I've spent managing Ms is seeking re-election in November and running against Democrats Kelsey Willey and Stephanie Ganaway-Pasley submitted a letter to Judge Condon in support of Tecklenburg which can be found below: Thanks for sending me a copy of the order about my Godmother I live in Maryland now but was in Charleston during the time my Godmother was committed to the care of John Tecklenburg I worked with him and his wife Sandy as incredible efforts were taken to take care of her affairs and well being Johnnie and  I am so thankful for all they have done for her I highly recommend that John remain on as Conservator for my Godmother Probate Judge Irv Condon  has can be found here or read in full below: documenting my service as conservator for a close family friend my biggest concern has always been the fact that her medical and nursing home expenses are greater than her monthly retirement income creating a drain on her savings that could leave her unable to pay for the care she needs I have placed part of her savings into four investments over the years that have created a little more than $8,000 in profit for Ms Johnnie: three loans to Sandy's businesses and myself that were paid back with interest All loans were fully documented and disclosed to the Probate Court when they occurred and were fully paid back on schedule with interest neither Sandy nor I have profited in any way from the many hours I've spent managing Ms the Probate Court of Charleston has initiated a review of my work as Ms with a formal hearing scheduled for June 15 I have respectfully asked the Court to publicly release all records associated with the case including the check registers which show precisely how I've managed the account +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sandy and I were distressed to learn that a close family friend had been the victim of a series of financial scams that had left her personal finances in shambles these kinds of crimes against the elderly are always upsetting But when the victim is someone you know well and care deeply about which would allow me to protect her assets and her well-being in the years to come I expended hundreds of hours in this role and never applied to the court for reimbursement of any expense or the value of my time even after her finances had been stabilized and the scams brought to an end Johnnie's large medical and nursing home expenses were draining her account in a way that put her future care in doubt Johnnie's income without putting her small nest egg at risk My certificate of appointment as conservator allowed the use of account funds without prior approval of a court Johnnie's funds into a tax sale that yielded her $3000 of new income given the minimal interest earned from money market and similar accounts I also began to consider the option of making loans at the higher rate of 5% from the small trust account of Ms Johnnie's whenever Sandy or I were planning to take out modest bank loans for our businesses or ourselves I believed I would be able to provide a reasonable return for Ms Johnnie while personally ensuring repayment thus guaranteeing that her assets were always protected I authorized these sorts of loans on behalf of Ms Each loan included a signed promissory note detailing the rate of interest and a clear repayment schedule Each loan transaction was duly noted in my annual accounting report to the Probate Court along with the proceeds of the 2011 tax sale mentioned above Johnnie's trust -- about one-third of its current value A detailed accounting of those loans and repayments with interest is as follows: Loan 1Amount: Probate Court requested further documentation on these transactions It was also then that I learned that these types of loans would best be carried out with preclearance by the Probate Court itself I promptly repaid the single outstanding loan in full and provided the Court with all the information requested that these corrective steps had fully addressed the Court's concerns and settled the matter going forward I received an order from the Probate Court temporarily limiting my authority as conservator and initiating a formal review of my handling of Ms Johnnie's finances in regard to Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg remarks on the eight years he's led the city calling it the "the honor of a lifetime." Ali Rockett/Staff Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg bids the city he's lead for the past eight years goodbye Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg bid farewell to the city he has led for the last eight years "Serving as mayor of Charleston has really been the honor of a lifetime," Tecklenburg said from the podium in the packed wood-paneled room on the second floor of City Hall as well as the council and the city's nearly 1,800 employees for their support along the way But I believe we build a solid foundation for what lies ahead for our city." As Tecklenburg's name enters the city’s annals it will also be added to one of his first initiatives as mayor: the Hope Center who represents the Fourth District covering the upper peninsula made a motion naming the city's homeless outreach center and the housing complex behind the planned Calhoun Street center after the outgoing mayor met with a standing ovation from the crowd which overflowed into a room on the first floor was unanimously supported by the 11 council members present at the Dec "I'm very uplifted because I take that to mean that it will get built," Tecklenburg said to chuckles from the crowd A permanent center is expected to be built next year but funding still falls short of the $7 million goal a growing "tent city" was one of the city's biggest concerns During the first four months of his first term the city cleared out the encampment and worked to find resources to help those displaced The project grew in scope over the years into the Hope Center by how we help those most in need," the mayor said in one of the more impassioned sections of his remarks Tecklenburg lauded the city's push for affordable housing and touted efforts toward racial reconciliation "Together we apologized for the city's direct role in the hideous institution of slavery," Tecklenburg said Days after a more than 9 foot tide submerged large swaths of the peninsula Tecklenburg continued to champion the proposed $1.3 billion seawall that he said "will save the city for generations to come." Shahid later claimed it was even his idea Folks around City Hall say that move was more significant than it appeared at the time Because some senior council members considered Shahid’s appointment a slight Had Tecklenburg appointed Councilman Keith Waring West Ashley’s elder statesman on council (and one of its biggest power brokers) council was often thwarting Tecklenburg’s agenda which was translated by City Hall observers as the mayor’s “lack of leadership.” But by then and spilled into elections when the mayor endorsed against at least one incumbent council member some council members were endorsing his opponents A visible example of the ongoing feud was that property on Sumar Street residents had demanded the city buy that property to stop a gas station from being built there But when the city and its contractor came up with plans to turn the land into a gathering place even West Ashley council members were divided on it a few months into Tecklenburg’s second term King Street saw the city’s worst riot in a century The night after a protest over the death of George Floyd a riot started in the Market and quickly spread to Upper King Street It ended with $2 million in property damage and some blamed the mayor when 911 calls weren’t answered quickly enough Nearly every Charleston cop was on King Street And even with reinforcements from North Charleston those officers were hopelessly outnumbered those critics claimed the mayor had ordered a stand down (which was later debunked) What that really means is police didn’t use billy sticks to beat the rioters … or shoot them Which few police chiefs would order their officers to do Mayors don’t go to prison for excessive force conventional wisdom was that Tecklenburg’s hopes for a third term were lost that night sick of traffic and sick of tourists — and not really interested in the finer points of what City Hall can actually do So Tecklenburg would’ve had enough trouble with Cogswell but he also faced ample friendly fire: Four people ostensibly from his own party jumped into the race — including his old friend Shahid these folks thought Tecklenburg wasn’t receptive enough to their never-ending list of demands Which they should remember when Mayor Cogswell is even less receptive to suggestions that entire peninsula streets be shut down for bicycles about as liberal as the city’s electorate will support Yet some Democrats ran to his left (and one to his right) National Democrats even jumped into the race and endorsed against a sitting Democratic mayor And when the mayor inevitably made it to the runoff with Cogswell two of those former candidates endorsed the former Republican lawmaker the Dems came to Tecklenburg’s aid in the runoff But their efforts basically offset get-out-the-vote campaigns by local Republicans (and yes who texted that Tecklenburg “supports crime” to their members on Election Day) we’ve seen Republicans stymied by base politics that go too far; this is what it looks like when the other side lines up in a circular firing squad Cogswell’s victory was only the second-most surprising thing about Tuesday’s runoff The bigger surprise was that Tecklenburg got within 600 votes Reach Brian Hicks at bhicks@postandcourier.com When Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg first heard about The Citadel’s medical camp in Kenya “She saw a post you put out about the trip and she was flabbergasted,” Tecklenburg told a group of Citadel cadets and students Wednesday during a recognition ceremony at city hall you would not believe what Citadel students are doing in the world.’” In this particular part of the world — Nairobi to be exact — Citadel cadets and students were treating thousands of underprivileged patients Led by Health and Human Performance professors Sarah Imam the group helped run The Citadel’s medical camp the cadets and students who volunteered have helped treat nearly 11,000 patients while also getting a hands-on those same cadets and students were invited to Charleston City Hall to be recognized by Tecklenburg Part of the city’s commendation included the mayor reading a proclamation which says “Therefore be it resolved that I as mayor of the City of Charleston commend Citadel leaders and students for their remarkable efforts to assist populations in need and extend best wishes for your upcoming Citadel leadership also attended the event to applaud the group’s efforts “I could not be more proud of the young men and women who spent three weeks in Kenya the past two summers serving others,” said The Citadel Provost Sally Selden “We expect nothing less of our Corps of Cadets and our students at The Citadel Some of the cadets and students were also offered an opportunity to speak about the experience “I’m truly grateful to have had the experience I did in Kenya,” said Cadet Hunter Bates “It was the most impactful experience I’ve participated in with The Citadel and I am thankful to be a part of something that will help shape my career as a future physician.” While participating in the camp is a great experience to cite for medical school applications it is also a representation of the leadership model taught at The Citadel But I’m very happy to say that we were able to create a bigger impact and really truly care for the patients there,” said Cadet Arianna Romero and we all had the privilege to participate Tecklenburg continued to emphasize one word: “heartwarming.” and I think you find during an experience like this that helping other brothers and sisters is God’s calling,” he said and if you can accomplish that in your life what meaning that can bring to what you do whether it be serving in the medical profession where they treated more than 5,000 patients in three weeks “Any time I have asked any of these students about this experience every single one of them has said the same thing: ‘This changed my life,’” said Darin Zimmerman dean of the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics and it’s probably one of the greatest examples of what we can do when we work together.” For more information on the medical camp and the funding that makes it possible, click here (WCIV) — A judge says Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg wrongfully took money from an elderly woman he cares for but the mayor says he used the money for the woman's benefit and didn't realize he did anything wrong Charleston County Probate Judge Irvin Condon has limited all of Mayor Tecklenburg's powers as a conservator for Ms Johnnie Wineglass pending a review of financial transactions executed by Tecklenburg Condon made the decision after discovering financial records showing Tecklenburg took out three loans totaling $80,000 from Ms Judge Condon also takes issue with Tecklenburg using $25,000 of Wineglass' money to purchase a foreclosed upon property in a 2011 tax sale Condon says Tecklenburg was required to seek court approval before making these financial decisions and called the mayor's actions a case of "apparent self-dealing." "I wish I had understood the need for preclearance on these transactions from the very beginning and that I'm genuinely sorry for any questions this has raised is a retired former school teacher and community volunteer Tecklenburg was appointed conservator for Wineglass in 2008 according to Charleston County Probate Court records They mayor said he accepted the appointment as conservator because Wineglass is a close family friend and she had been the victim of financial scams he began exploring avenues by which to boost Wineglass' income after being appointed her conservator as it was apparent to him her savings weren't sufficient to provide for her care Johnnie's large medical and nursing home expenses were draining her account in a way that put her future care in doubt," Mayor Tecklenburg explained on his Facebook page Johnnie's income without putting her small nest egg at risk." Tecklenburg apparently paid back all three loans with interest and also paid back with interest ($28,000) the money from the tax sale after flipping the property according to both Condon's order and Tecklenburg The interest on the loans and the proceeds of the tax sale added more than $8,000 to Wineglass' savings The mayor says that sum amounts to about one-third of the current total value of Wineglass' assets The mayor says he thought his status as Wineglass' conservator gave him the authority to take out the loans but Condon argues state law doesn't allow such use without court approval in cases where there's an apparent conflict of interest or when the money is paid to the conservator's family Two of the loans were paid to Mayor Tecklenburg's wife's business A third loan was paid to Mayor Tecklenburg personally Tecklenburg says he took out the loans from Wineglass' funds instead of from banks when he and his wife were already considering getting loans for themselves or their businesses thus guaranteeing that her assets were always protected," Tecklenburg said Condon has appointed special conservators to investigate the transactions and to opine on Tecklenburg’s fitness to continue as Wineglass' conservator Condon is also calling on Wineglass' family members to write the court with their opinion of Tecklenburg who describes herself as Wineglass' goddaughter "During the time my godmother was committed to the care of John Tecklenburg as incredible efforts were taken to take care of her affairs and well-being," said Leila Potts-Campbell in a letter to Condon "John and Sandy are like family to Ms and I am so thankful for all they have done for her I highly recommend that John remain on as conservator for my godmother." The City of Charleston will certify the vote on Wednesday at 1 p.m Eyebrows were raised last month when German women’s national team coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg re-emerged in public to give a guest “celebratory lecture” to dentists at the Bavarian Dental Association (BDA) Following Germany’s shock exit from the World Cup in the group stages this summer Voss-Tecklenburg was expected to resign or be fired to comment on how badly the tournament had gone the German Football Association (DFB) announced that Voss-Tecklenburg would be taking sick leave from September 8 she has been on a period of vacation approved by the DFB Germany are out - it might just be the biggest shock the Women's World Cup has seen when she gave a lecture titled Shaping to perform: my management in women’s soccer follows Voss-Tecklenburg giving a talk on October 11 at a forum organised by the German Association of the Prefabricated Housing Industry “We have taken note of Voss-Tecklenburg’s appearance at the BDA,” a statement from the DFB read “A joint discussion is to take place immediately after the end of the vacation.” Voss-Tecklenburg has yet to return to the sidelines as Germany battle for Olympic qualification in the Women’s Nations League what is going on and are these events a sign of Voss-Tecklenburg’s final farewell The Athletic’s Raphael Honigstein debated the topic on the Full Time Europe podcast which includes the inside story on Aitana Bonmati’s Ballon d’Or win Sophie Penney: So where has Voss-Tecklenburg been since the World Cup and what has the reaction been to her absence she’s been moved into a rehabilitation holiday but then she was spotted doing a big speech for an association of dentists in Germany Honigstein: It was quite a numbing experience for some of the German public and the players who felt that this was a strange and unprofessional thing to do It’s fine to be off sick and to be on holiday but to then go and do a speech that was presumably paid for was a bit awkward and hasn’t helped her when it comes to her future and her standing with the German federation Germany midfielder Lena Oberdorf said it raised a few questions She hoped they could clarify what happened at the World Cup before Voss-Tecklenburg went on vacation Do you get the sense that there was any World Cup debrief before Voss-Tecklenburg went away Honigstein: There was supposed to be a big inquest led by Voss-Tecklenburg is not an ideal setup if you’re supposed to be critical of your own performance but it was a typical German affair where they don’t want to rock the boat too much an inquiry or an inquest and then kick it into the long grass But it hasn’t happened yet and it leaves everything a little bit in limbo who is well-liked all across German football and he is doing a decent job He won his first game (against Iceland) but you have this incumbent who’s not really enjoying things that much both within the German sphere and also in the dressing room There were whispers during the World Cup and since then that the team weren’t especially happy with her (Voss-Tecklenburg) and felt that she could have done a better job and this will just add to the voices of those who think a change is necessary Penney: There’s a lot at stake for this German team. They didn’t qualify for the 2020 Olympics (after winning gold in 2016) because of their performance in the 2019 World Cup, so they really want to go to Paris next year. To do that, they have to finish in the top two in the Nations League — or, if France get to the final Do you get any sense of how this is affecting the team Honigstein: Judging from what Oberdorf said and the way she said it but certainly frustration and a slight annoyance that things have played out this way And I’m sure she would have thought very carefully about going public and putting more pressure on the DFB to make a decision but Oberdorf’s comments are an accurate reflection of where a significant part of the dressing room is at the moment Penney: When Voss-Tecklenburg does come back The DFB is also building a big HQ base camp outside Frankfurt which has cost hundreds of millions and gone over budget — that’s going to be one of the reasons they take their time to find the right way to part ways with her The situation isn’t tenable but I think we will have a solution by the end of November Penney: Voss-Tecklenburg’s contract runs until 2025 do you think the current interim manager is a good option or would there be other people who might be in the running Honigstein: Hrubesch is universally liked across German football He also still works for Hamburg in an important role behind the scenes so this isn’t viable as far as the big tournaments are concerned I haven’t seen any names being mentioned as candidates to succeed her I’m sure the DFB will look very closely now that German football is booming Things have become slightly more difficult because we’ve seen foreign managers come in We’ve seen male managers come in who perhaps wouldn’t be considered the ideal fit from the outset The men’s setup used to be very conservative with very pragmatic managers who would be in the role a long time before they would get fired But expectations are much higher now and because Voss-Tecklenburg’s behaved in a less than perfectly professional way during this absence The DFB has said they’ll have a discussion on her future when she’s back Germany Women boss Voss-Tecklenburg extends contract until 2025  (Top photo: Joe Prior/Visionhaus via Getty Images)
