find out what went wrong “It looks like we have figured it out and now we are moving in the right direction but with the setup we have found on the bikes I am sure we will be able to fight for a lot more points.  “It definitely gives me a lot more confidence knowing that the bike between my legs is going forward You could see me making passes again.  and I also have to thank Brian Karger very much for helping me out and being there with me in the pits I am very happy with the co-operation we have together.” Madsen relocated from Poland back to Denmark in the winter and is currently building a house in his homeland Some suggested the project may have proved a distraction I haven’t felt comfortable with my bikes this year It showed really good results in the Polish league We have been working very hard over the last few weeks to find out the problem we had and it looks like we are going in the right direction.” World No.2 Madsen is far from happy with his current position in the Speedway GP standings “I’m in eighth place and I am vice world champion,” he said But we are there now and hopefully we can keep this going “I came into Saturday’s meeting with a lot more confidence than when I was in Warsaw I am able to chase down the riders in front of me.” German pioneer Celina Liebmann hopes the first-ever FIM Women’s Speedway Gold Trophy can evolve into a full world championship as 11 of the sport’s top female stars battle it out at German track Teterow on Saturday Riders from six different countries, including Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Australia and Argentina, have been taking part in the FIM Women’s Speedway Academy receiving on-track coaching from four-time Speedway GP world champion Greg Hancock and former FIM Long Track team world champion Glen Phillips They have also received advice in other areas of the sport in their quest to follow Liebmann in establishing themselves as professional speedway riders After competing against men in recent years Liebmann is delighted to see the sport’s female riders compete in an event of their own – and she would love to see it develop into a full world championship.  She said: “I think we will have some more girls in the coming years and maybe we can have SGPW – or something like that “The Women's Academy started two years ago and it’s a brilliant opportunity for the girls to come together and have some practice with some experienced riders like Greg Hancock and Glen Phillips We had less riders in the beginning and now we have riders from Argentina and Australia It’s good to have girls from other countries and continents “They love to have the opportunity to ride with girls and have some opportunities to ride in Europe Liebmann will start as favourite to win the FIM Women’s Speedway Gold Trophy but knows she will have to deliver over 12 heats and a final to make history as the first women’s champion She said: “I think the first Gold Trophy will be just amazing But if you go into your race as a favourite “I need to be good; the bike needs to be good If you have a technical failure in the final “I want to say thank you to the FIM and their Women’s Commission I am delighted to finally have a Women’s Gold Trophy I have been waiting for this all my career I am really pleased about it and hopefully we will have a German champion here.”  American legend Hancock coached at the 2023 FIM Women’s Speedway Academy in Manchester and has been delighted to see the sport’s female stars develop He said: “I have seen the growth and improvement the women have made in the last 12 months and how the level of competition is getting better “I have spent a lot of time with the riders and we have been working on how they sit on the bike I can really show them things that can make their whole programme and future that much better They welcomed every piece of advice with open arms They gave feedback too and were talking about how they felt They told me what they wanted to learn on the track really grown in a year – massively – and I look forward to seeing what happens in the first official FIM Women’s Speedway Gold Trophy It’s great that we have a women’s programme that could potentially turn into a full world championship “We have had some women jump into the game before ‘I can do this too and I can be competitive.’ Some of these women can run really strong with the guys of today.”  FIM Track Racing Commission director Armando Castagna has also been delighted to offer his words of advice to the sport’s female riders He said: “I am very proud to be part of this project We started the FIM Women’s Speedway Academy a couple of years ago in Germany and some of the women that were at the first one are back again this weekend and racing on Saturday “I am honoured and proud to be part of this especially having Greg Hancock and Glen Phillips here to coach them as well as the team of women who are part of the FIM Track Racing Commission working hard to deliver this weekend in the best way possible Discovery Sports for being present throughout the weekend to help us with media coverage “This event is the way to show women can do speedway as well Celina is a pioneer in the sport and has shown that women can deserve a place in club squads across Europe I am sure these riders will get better with every day of the academy we will have a good final to watch.”  German international Kai Huckenbeck returns as 2023 FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Teterow wild card on June 10 bidding to improve on his best-ever SGP performance in 2022.  Huckenbeck lines up in the famous No.16 race jacket at the Bergring Arena, where he claimed a strong seven Speedway GP World Championship points last June – falling just two race points short of the semi-final.  The 30-year-old bids for his first Speedway GP semi-final on June 10, but Huckenbeck has already showed his class, racing to 18 points for Germany at FIM Speedway of Nations Semi-Final 1 in Vojens last July.  The team just missed out on FIM SON Final qualification in a Final Qualifier shoot-out with Poland. But Huckenbeck still did enough to lead his side to Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup qualification and they head to the tournament in Wroclaw from July 25-29 bidding to reach Germany’s first FIM SWC Final of the 21st century.  Huckenbeck’s international performances saw him named as third substitute rider for the 2023 Speedway GP series, meaning he may get further opportunities to race in this year’s championship if a few of the regular members of the Speedway GP line-up are sidelined due to injury Huckenbeck is joined in Teterow by his 2022 FIM SON teammates Norick Blodorn and Michael Hartel who line up as track reserves in the No.17 and No.18 race jackets respectively.  The riders are two of Germany’s brightest young stars and will get their chance to shine if any of the main 16 riders are forced out of a heat due to injury Tickets for the FIM German Speedway GP are on sale now. He said: “I am working so hard behind the scenes I had a good season there and won the Australian Championship – I had wanted that one for a while I am confident and scoring some points everywhere “Last year I went through a GP series without getting to a final It’s pretty disappointing because I raced these boys in the league throughout the week and beat them It’s all going well at the moment and when speedway goes well Holder celebrates third place in Prague The Speedway GP World Championship standings make very happy reading for fans of Polish PGE Ekstraliga champions Lublin Lindgren and Holder all signed for the club for this year Holder made rapid progress when he teamed up with Zmarzlik at Gorzow in 2020 And he admits sharing a pit area with two of the sport’s frontrunners away from Speedway GP can only benefit him He said: “It’s definitely good to ride in the same team as them Freddie was in the GPs when I wasn’t even racing speedway but we all have different engines and stuff Lublin's Speedway GP heroes Holder, Lindgren and Zmarzlik One former Speedway GP icon who is certainly on Holder’s side this season is his elder brother Chris Holder, the 2012 Speedway GP world champion. Read our Privacy notice It is a bright morning on a German autobahn between Berlin and Rostock, and 91-year-old Gerda Shenfield is steeling herself. Armed with an arsenal of questions, she is visiting her home town for the first time in over 70 years. She is propelled by her fierce resolve to discover who sent her parents to their deaths in 1942. Gerda was born in 1920 in the old fortress town of Teterow, north-east Germany, near the Polish border. Her parents had a thriving animal fur business, a three-storey house and stables. They were Jewish. The anti-Semitic creep in Germany was almost imperceptible at first, but when the Nazis stormed to power in 1933 it was everywhere. For Gerda, the bullying began at secondary school; teachers and other pupils acted alone or united to taunt and exclude her. Gerda's permit arrived in early 1939 but, desperate not to abandon her parents to an increasingly certain fate, she clung on until the eve of the Second World War. As German tanks massed on the Polish border, she knew the time had come – "we all knew war was in the air." It was 3 August, exactly a month before it started. By the time war erupted a month later, Gerda was in Merthyr Tydfil, the Welsh town to which her nursing papers had taken her. Day and night she crammed for her exams to avoid being sent back. In the local hospital she met the charming Harry Shenfield, who was recovering from a broken wrist. A smooth-talking Welshman, he instantly fell for Gerda, who gradually warmed to his advances. As the war raged ceaselessly, Jews in Teterow had been rounded up and forced to live in the rabbi's house. They lived in squalor, unable to afford food or water. A handful of sympathetic townspeople delivered scraps to them, including the new owner of Gerda's family home, Herr Buhr. Gerda's hopes of rescuing her family faded. When the Red Army stormed Teterow, the town cowered. One man stood outside the town hall and waved a white handkerchief. The Russians publicly executed suspected Nazis and raped women. Mass suicides swept Germany. Around 200 people drowned themselves in Teterow's lake, and in nearby Demmin, about 1,000 took their lives in the largest mass suicide in German history. Teterow's narrow, cobbled streets and fortress walls are exactly as Gerda remembers them, the battle scars of its wretched history barely visible. Unwearied despite a day of travel, and with wide eyes, Gerda marches to the town hall. "Who put my parents on the train?" she demands of the mayor, Reinhard Dettmann. The information, he says, does not exist. Her hopes of identifying her parents' betrayers were destroyed when the Russians torched the town's files. Undeterred and hoping the answers are tucked away just out of sight, Gerda wanders the stony streets. Her parents' last home – the rabbi's house – no longer exists. The land is now owned by a grinning German couple who have turned it into an exquisite, fairytale garden. Its beauty and the history move Gerda and spark a surge of tears. At the edge of a well-manicured hedgerow, she places a pot plant to the memory of her parents. Not far from the rabbi's house, Gerda's family home is now filled with quirky collections of clocks, Ikea furniture and the family photographs of strangers. "Do you know?" Gerda muses, "it's not my home. I think that's a good thing." Wartime events in Teterow elude Jürgen as he was conscripted to fight, and then held prisoner by the British in Schleswig-Holstein. He returned to find all but two members of his family had committed suicide. Jürgen's sister had been repeatedly raped by Russian soldiers. His father decided they had suffered enough. He and his wife stacked their rucksacks with rocks, cradled their children in their arms and waded to their deaths in the Teterow lake. The mayor, Mr Dettmann, is desperate to keep history alive as he fears a resurgence of fascism in Europe. Plaques across Teterow remind inhabitants and visitors of the Jewish deportations. He keeps the Jewish cemetery locked at night so the graves are not desecrated. The truth of those who conspired in Gerda's parents' deaths is long buried. Standing before the only tombstones honouring her family, Gerda wipes tears from her face, points a shaky finger at her grandson Jonathan and says: "You better come back here. Don't you ever forget." GP Challenge in Glasgow on August 20 Huckenbeck finished second at the qualifying round in Abensberg scoring 13 points to tie with meeting winner Anders Thomsen who defeated him in a run-off for top spot on the day The top three in Glasgow will be guaranteed a place in the 2023 FIM Speedway Grand Prix series The Landshut racer’s qualification for the Challenge came just two days after he fell narrowly short of his first SGP semi-final at the Wölk FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Teterow on Saturday The 29-year-old scored six race points in his opening three rides but he fell short of the top eight after he rolled into the tapes in heat 15 Huckenbeck left with seven championship points which is still his best-ever Speedway GP return But he hopes to earn plenty more chances to mix it with the world’s top riders as he bids to become Germany’s first Speedway GP regular since Martin Smolinski raced in the 2014 series Huckenbeck said: “I think last time I only scored four points Six race points and seven championship points is a bit better “But it was fun to race against these guys Hopefully one day I will make it into the GP Asked what went wrong at the tapes in his fourth outing Robert’s hand and he almost moved I dropped the clutch and touched the tapes.” Polish racer Patryk Dudek says he was set up for success after storming up the FIM Speedway Grand Prix standings with victory in the Wölk FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Teterow on Saturday Dudek started the night 14th in the World Championship standings on 15 points having scored five points in each of the opening three Speedway GP rounds But he left the Bergring Arena with the top prize of 20 points to surge up to eighth place after defeating series leader Bartosz Zmarzlik and Great Britain racer Robert Lambert in the final It was Dudek’s first semi-final appearance since August 31 2019 – the last time Speedway GP visited Teterow The result is some turnaround for the 2017 Speedway GP World Championship runner-up and Dudek admits a series of good decisions in the pits delivered a dream result “I had a tough start to the season and those first three rounds were not good for me It was good to be back on the podium and I have some more points now “We changed many things on the bikes with the setup ahead of every heat and the engines were working well “I had good starts today and I think the starts were very important We made good decisions in the pits with my team Everything we changed on the bikes worked well in the race after It’s good to be back on the podium and the points are good for me Double world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik leads the Speedway GP standings on 62 points – putting him 11 clear of nearest rival Maciej Janowski He was content with 18 championship points but he was gutted to miss out on victory in Teterow again as he recorded his third second-place finish at the Bergring Arena The Gorzow star said: “I have had a lot of second places here But I am very happy with this because a final is a final and it is always a good feeling to be in the final You always sleep better after the meeting!” Next up is the FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Gorzow on June 25 and excitement will be huge in the city ahead of Zmarzlik’s home event But the local hero is determined not to look too far ahead I have many meetings before the next GP and I am focused on the next meeting – that’s what matters for me I am taking it step by step.” Zmarzlik said Third-placed Fredrik Lindgren was delighted with the rapid reactions at the tapes which propelled him to his second podium in four rounds “I am really glad to have executed some good starts and ridden some good lines I made sure I got the points to get into the semi “I gave it everything I had in the semi and the final But congratulations to Patryk on his win and Bartosz; they rode well on a challenging track I am happy to be back on the podium,” Lindgren said TETEROW SCORES:1 Patryk Dudek 20 Points2 Bartosz
