Swiss solar manufacturer Meyer Burger has reduced shifts for around 300 employees at its Thalheim cell manufacturing facility amid supply chain challenges
The company said that the decision to move the workers to “short-time work” was motivated by “temporary material bottlenecks in production” and that shift changes would take place from 1 May
but did not provide further details on the changes
Meyer Burger also announced that it has adjusted its production processes at its 2GW Goodyear module assembly facility in the US state of Arizona, which has been the company’s focus of operations since the closure of its Freiberg module assembly plant in Germany
Work at the Goodyear facility will now alternate between module production and “technical work”
While the company has not provided details on the facility’s output
this phrasing implies that the facility’s module output could be diminished
Meyer Burger is also preparing “further adjustments to the workforce” at the Goodyear facility to reduce costs
These production cuts are the latest negative developments for the company, which earlier this month delayed the publication of its annual report amid an announcement of around US$257 million in annual losses

was agreed upon by the company’s management and the works council
Approximately 300 employees at the Thalheim site — part of the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen — will be affected
These workers were previously engaged in around-the-clock manufacturing of high-performance solar cells
The company states in a press release that the decision aims to reduce costs in the short term as supply chain challenges continue to impact production
Material bottlenecks have also affected Meyer Burger's US facility in Goodyear
which assembles solar modules using cells from the Thalheim site
Technical work at the plant now alternates daily with the production of solar modules as part of the ongoing ramp-up
further adjustments to the workforce are being prepared in order to reduce costs

Colorado Springs solar cell plant halted as Swiss-German PV manufacturer announces company restructuring plans
Planned capacity expansion at Arizona module production plant also put on hold
Meyer Burger’s existing module plant in Arizona will now be supplied by the company's German cell facility
Meyer Burger has canceled plans to open a 2 GW solar cell manufacturing facility in the United States
the Swiss-German PV manufacturer said construction of the plant at Colorado Springs is no longer financially viable
The board of directors has also instructed company management to draw up a comprehensive restructuring and cost-cutting program for the business
A planned 0.7 GW expansion of Meyer Burger’s 1.4 GW module production plant in Goodyear
The decision means Meyer Burger’s existing cell production site in Thalheim
will continue to form the backbone of the company’s solar cell supply
according to the manufacturer – a reversal on previous plans
Meyer Burger said cells produced at Thalheim represent the most economical option in the current market conditions
The manufacturer had sought a debt financing package backed by the monetization of tax credits available through the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)
Regulations in the United States allow an additional 10% bonus investment tax for US solar projects
Announcing the Colorado production facility in July 2023
Meyer Burger said it planned to monetize up to $1.4 billion in tax credits from the start of production in 2024 until the end of 2032
it said it will continue to seek debt financing on a reduced scale by monetizing the tax credits available to its US module production facility
It added its financing requirements will be “significantly lower” due to halting the Colorado Springs plant
In addition to announcing a “comprehensive” restructuring and cost-cutting program
Meyer Burger has postponed publication of its half-year financial result
The company said it could potentially postpone to an even later date
Personnel changes are also expected at board level
Mark Kerekes has stepped down from the board of directors
with the company stating that its realignment will require a “new composition” of the board of directors
“We would like to thank Mark Kerekes for his very constructive cooperation and significant contributions during his membership of the board of directors,” said Franz Richter
chairman of the board of directors of Meyer Burger

Man trapped under truck charged with stealing partsUSA TODAY NETWORK - WisconsinA 45-year-old Plymouth man who was found trapped beneath a truck earlier this month has been charged with stealing car parts and damage to property
Thalheim was hospitalized June 11 after the jack he allegedly used to steal the rims off a 2016 GMC Sierra couldn't hold up the weight of the truck
The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office said the man had been trapped for seven hours
was officially charged June 21 with removal of a major car part and felony criminal damage to property
which combined could carry a maximum sentence of three years in prison
Related story: Truck falls on Sheboygan County man
Police were sent to Meyer Motors in Plymouth at 6:45 a.m
on June 11 for a medical call involving a man
trapped underneath a truck in the parking lot
Three of the truck's wheels had been removed and the truck was sitting on its brake rotors
Thalheim was trapped underneath the rear driver's side of the truck
Thalheim told officers that he was "doing something bad" when the truck fell on him
were strewn about and officers believed that Thalheim was in the process of stealing parts from the truck when the jack failed
pinning his head between the frame of the vehicle and the asphalt parking lot
Police were unable to find the fourth missing wheel
and Thalheim was uncooperative before being flighted to the hospital with a fractured skull and broken collarbone
police were able to recover the missing wheel in a vehicle parked at a church nearby the dealership
The dealership estimated repairs to the damaged truck would cost $7.089.89
Swiss module manufacturer Meyer Burger will scrap its proposed 2GW solar cell manufacturing plant in Colorado
claiming that the project is “no longer financially viable”
and the company announced that it would rely on its cell production facility in Thalheim
this cancellation has forced Meyer Burger to amend some of its other production forecasts
Both the Thalheim cell facility and the Arizona module assembly plant have an annual production of 1.4GW
and without the additional cell capacity provided by the Colorado facility
Meyer Burger announced that the planned 700MW expansion of its Arizona facility has been “suspended for the time being”
The company also announced that deputy chairman and member of the board of directors Mark Kerekes had resigned from his position
noting that “the realignment of the company will require a new composition of the board of directors”
The news follows a number of challenging financial periods for the company
Meyer Burger announced that its losses had more than quintupled
falling from losses of CHF35 million (US$41.3 million) to CHF164 million between the end of 2022 and the end of 2023
This was despite relatively stable sales figures over this period—falling marginally from CHF145 million to CHF135 million —and the company argued that the oversupply of modules made in Asia to the European market
the loss of the Colorado facility could prove damaging to the company’s long-term finances
Upon its announcement of the Colorado factory last year
Meyer Burger noted that its work could qualify the company for as much as US$1.4 billion in tax credits
under incentives offered by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to incentivise building manufacturing capacity in the US
The loss of these potential tax credits could undermine the company’s long-term financial outlook
in order to close what it called a “funding gap” that had driven its poor financial results in 2023
it would rely on a US$300 million tax credit under the 45X Advanced Manufacturing Tax Credit
This is to say nothing of the cost of the Colorado facility
which was put at US$400 million by US secretary of state Antony Blinken
who spoke positively about the facility and the US’ position as “the world’s top destination for foreign investment” at the 2024 SelectUSA conference in June
The company’s share price fell more than 50% yesterday
and follows the loss of more than 90% of the shares’ values since the start of the year
Meyer Burger also noted that it plans to publish its half-year results on 30 September
two weeks later than the original date proposed
While Meyer Burger still expects to achieve debt financing through the monetisation of 45X credits
the company noted that this approach would only be considered “on a reduced scale
This focus on US manufacturing is nothing new—the company’s CEO Gunter Erfurt told PV Tech Premium as much during the Intersolar 2024 conference earlier this year—but it is unclear how the company will follow what Erfurt called a “massive disappointment” in Europe
now that it plans to close the Colorado facility
The news also follows Meyer Burger’s announcement of plans to close its Freiberg manufacturing plant
The company announced this closure mere days after new tools and equipment reached the Arizona facility
demonstrating the company’s new focus on the US market
The situation was growing hairy enough for Southern Valley without coach Jesse Thalheim continuing her colorful new do Tuesday night
So when unbeaten Maywood-Hayes Centers RPAC title match lead reached 6-0
the purple wig went flying faster than volleyball fans could say John Cook
I had to throw that baby off, Thalheim declared about this titanic East vs
it helps fire them up...but the thing just wasnt meshing.
The purple flying off almost instantly hit an on switch for Southern Valley
who promplty served a 14-0 surge thats right 14 cnsecutive points to quickly turn around this highly-anticipated showdown
That was a hard serve, Wolves coach Kory Rohde said about Hogelands barrage
A 6-0 deficiit suddenly became 14-6 in the Eagles favor
teammates Lauryn Samuelson and sophomore Krista Best were often ready to boom downkills
Samuelson was a picture of rapidly-approaching storms when lightning and thunder just keep getting closer:
Barely a second separated set to point once Samuelson warmed up
The Eagles (22-4 record) simply werent stopping their quest for a second RPAC volleyball title in three seasons
Senior Jenny Moenning was another striker who stepped up to power the eventual 25-23
Both Moenning and Samuselson have made great returns from injuries last season
Lauryn overstretched a ligament and it kept popping her kneecap out of place, Thalheim explained
And Jenni came back from ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) repair
They both did a great job tonight and for us all year.
a narrow two points deciding two sets shows how the Wolves often matched S.V
Senior Avery Johnson really took charge along the front line following that close opening defeat
She ripped 16 kills to match her total in Tuesdays earlier semifinal win over Wauneta-Palisade while also putting down three stuff blocks
Junior Jaycee Widener drilled 17 kills with a team-leading six ace blocks
Freshman Olivia Hansen also showed no signs of RPAC rookie nerves with seven kills
Freshmen classmates Ashlin Broz (14 points
two aces) are two other fantastic reasons why the Eagles are 26-1 this season
They dont play like freshmen, Rohde confirmed
I credit a lot to having a very good junior high program.
Theyre going to great things at their districts, Thalheim also observed
the Eagles just seemed to be a step or jump or point ahead throughout much of Tuesdays title match
Senior Madison Henderson served some crucial points late in one of the sets while classmate Mandy Schoen showed why shes a real libero
Mandy made some great defensive plays, Thalheim confirmed
Schoen knows about winning titles on the Graff Events Center floor
Southern Valley took both the RPAC volleyball and basketball finals at MCC in 2017-18
The Wolves didnt disappoint during their historic first RPAC title match as a consolidated school
They shook off the 2-0 deficit to control that third-set victory
They blasted in front several times during Tuesdays finale
but Southern Valley seeemingly always answered
Both the Wolves and Rohde knew there was no reason to get too disappointed about this one defeat
Tonight will only make us better as a team, Rohde concluded
We learned a lot that we can use down the road this season.
Besides the top performers already mentioned
senior Jaycee Lapp delivered 23 assists for M-HC and served 15-for15 with eight points
Freshman Kiley Hejtmanek added four assists on 17-of-18 setting
Both teams will finish their regular seasons this week leading into subdistrict volleyball tournaments next week

No crowds of churchgoers rush to the prayer houses on Sundays
Yet many in Germany recognise the image that the Vogtland and the Ore Mountains have something of a Biblebelt
"Modern ideas around gender definitely don't get a foothold here," he says
There is a buzz of activity at the large Lutheran Church in Thalheim this Saturday evening in February
The gathering is to thank all the volunteers who did something for the church in the past year
And what is striking: among the 150 or so attendees
there are also many young people and children in addition to the elderly
that the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) is known as a kind of Biblebelt
people's commitment to the church is still high here."
Lehmann nuances the image that sometimes arises in German media as if "pious Saxony"
and especially the southern part of this state
were a somewhat backward and even sectarian region from a philosophical point of view
"It is said that many churches and denominations here have something pietistic about them
But it varies a lot whether you look at the bigger cities or the villages
This observation is confirmed by Frieder Seidel
professing and active Christians form a minority of the population in this part of Germany
But if you compare it to the rest of the country
you will find comparatively many conservative
Bible-believing Christians in southern Saxony."
he was active in the Christian Democratic Union
Belonging to a so-called Brüdergemeinde (Brethren Community) himself
he has a good overview of religiosity in the Vogtland and Erzgebirge region
every village has one or two churches: one belonging to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony (EKS)
as well as often one or more breakaway churches
Hernhutters or congregations of the Brethren."
such congregations may differ from each other
but "the similarity is often their conservative outlook
they're taking the Bible seriously and a certain pietistic streak
Although this is becoming less and less in the EKS," says Seidel
Your assessment of the conservatism of southern Saxony
the region that has been the border region with the Czech Republic for centuries
a religious scholar at the University of Leipzig
gave an introduction about the Erzgebirge region at a seminar on religious hotspots in 2019
She found it striking that there are fewer women in leadership positions in the EKS than elsewhere in the Lutheran Church of Germany
Neef saw in this "an indication of a rather conservative gender framework"
The region is home to a relatively high number of pro-life marches
The small town of Thalheim has a monument to unborn life
you can also look at this same reality in a more positive light
people don't jump on every horse that runs by," says Benjamin Fitz
people still think it is normal for a family to consist of a father
Fitz is permanently employed as an administrator by the Christliches Bildungszentrum Erzgebirge (Christian Education Centre Ore Mountains)
offers some 11 to 18 students a 30-week formation programme
They spend the other 15 weeks elsewhere in the country with a mentor
Fitz walks into the formation centre's beautiful
here you can see where our students come from
And also the places where they do internships
You can find these from the foothills of the Alps to the Baltic Sea
But the most difficult are the internships here in Erzgebirge and in Baden-Württemberg
The latter area is also referred to as a Bibelgürtel (Biblebelt
Asked about the roots of the pietistic slant of southern Saxony
Seidel points to the second half of the 19th century
"Revival preachers from England then migrated to mainland Europe
from Brethren to Baptists and Seventh-day Adventists
Although the GDR formed after World War II was anti-religious
it did tolerate church activities out of self-interest
"Allowing church life to a certain extent provided the GDR with a fig leaf with which it could somewhat cover itself on the international stage."
Little remained of that boom after the 1989 Wende
Seidel points to a new and modern-looking church in Thierfeld
It bears the name Kirche für dich (Church for you)
About 220 adults gather there every Sunday
And the 100 or so children and young people receive catechism classes there
there are some specific points for which prayers are offered in the worship service in Kirche für dich: for the persecuted churches around the world
For people who stand up for unborn life and therefore experience opposition in their own environment
And for young people who face confusing ideas about gender in mainstream education
"May they gain the strength to be content and happy with the gender with which You created them."
That the very state of Saxony has a thriving pro-Israel association called Saxon Israelfreunde and that its office is based in the village of Reichenbach
you can say that Germany south of the A2 motorway is much more religious than north of it
This applies to the old West Germany as much as to the former GDR
And conservative Christians simply now usually have more in common with Israel than liberal or secular ones."

One match all week might just spark another Southern Valley Eagles flight to the state volleyball tournament
We look forward to only one night of games this week and getting a much-needed break before subdistricts start, coach Jessi Thalheim said as her Eagles are visiting the Franklin Flyers tonight
Southern Valley (16-12 record) captured two more wins on Saturday to hopefully gain momentum in its quest to win a third straight district championship
The Eagles edged RPAC champ Bertrand in three sets which avenged a tourney semifinal loss to those Vikings last Tuesday at McCook Community College
25-21 behind the balanced attack of juniors Grace Hogeland (five kills)
Mandy Schoen (four) and freshman Krista Best (four)
Senior Maggie Bose also served six aces to go with a team-high 12 digs
Bertrand (15-11) couldnt build on wins over both S.V
and Dundy County-Stratton at MCC last week
The Eagles then rallied past Elm Creek 22-25
25-18 on Saturday to reach their home invitational title match
Samuelson clobbered 17 kills and made 17 digs though that dig total was a distant second to senior Sawyer Quinns 30
Hogeland hammered five and junior Aubree Warner served two aces
Elm Creek suffered only its seventh defeat this season compared to 20 victories
Patricks and didnt have enough firepower left for either set
They just served just one ace while those Irish dropped in nine
along with four stuff blocks compared to Southern Valleys one
We fell short in the championship game in many ways, Thalheim observed
Energy dropped down again and we were missing a spark of heart to continue to fight regardless of who was on the court.
We just could not get past our own mistakes enough to put up a winning performance against North Platte (St
Hogelands six kills paced the Eagles in those 25-16

Meyer Burger will start production at its US module factory as it relocates its core operations from Germany to the United States
It is launching production of heterojunction solar modules and securing financing for a new cell plant
From pv magazine Germany
has passed a factory audit according to UL test standards without any issues
Meyer Burger has already delivered solar cells from its production site in Thalheim
to its US plant to support module production
It said this will ensure the ramp-up of production in the US market
It also plans to construct a cell factory in Colorado
with the start of production dependent on Section 45X financing under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)
A major US bank has completed due diligence and is currently negotiating loan agreements
Meyer Burger aims to finalize the deal and receive payment by the middle of the third quarter
It also expects export financing from a German bank for US photovoltaic production
It has submitted the final application for a US Department of Energy loan to finance the cell factory
A commercial agreement with a US industrial and technology group has been negotiated
and a term sheet for potential investment in Meyer Burger has been exchanged
This strategic cooperation would enable Meyer Burger to manufacture solar modules in the United States with a growing proportion of domestic components
Meyer Burger has signed several contracts with engineering
procurement and construction (EPC) companies and energy suppliers for purchasing its US-manufactured solar modules
It has also signed a purchase contract for up to 600 MW per year with a large US energy company
with delivery agreed for three years from 2026 and a two-year extension option
The agreement will start once financing for the solar cell plant in Colorado Springs is completed
In April, the company shut down its solar module plant in Freiberg, Saxony, after there was no agreement within the federal government on resilience measures for German and European PV manufacturers
More articles from Sandra Enkhardt
Switzerland-based Meyer Burger had a PV module inventory of 365 MW at the end of 2023
The closure of its panel factory in Freiberg
will only be reversed if there are very strong political signals
From pv magazine Germany
a Switzerland-based heterojunction solar module manufacturer
said it posted a net loss of CHF 292 million ($330 million) in fiscal 2023
it recorded a net loss of around CHF 70 million
The company said its module manufacturing capacity stood at 1.4 GW at the end of 2023
it only operated 650 MW of that due to price pressures in the European solar market
365 MW of modules were in stock at the end of the year
Meyer Burger recently shut down module production in Freiberg
CEO Gunter Erfurt said that many competitors offer their modules at prices that did not cover costs
Meyer Burger deliberately decided not to take part in this price war
partly because a small price discount granted in the summer of 2023 did not lead to an increase in sales figures
The company is currently setting up a new 2 GW module production in Goodyear
Its production facility for solar cells in Thalheim
It is also setting up another 2 GW solar cell production facility in Colorado Springs
it is moving equipment that was originally meant to expand production in Thalheim to the United States
He said that very strong political signals were needed to reverse the closure of production in Freiberg
The company is currently preparing to lay off employees
It said it assumes that the growth of the US solar market over the next few years will mainly be driven by large-scale projects
The company will therefore primarily produce in the United States for this segment
The company said it is also open to licensing its technology to third parties and is now in talks with unspecified industrial companies about possible partnerships that could also lead to such licensing models
The ownership rights would remain with Meyer Burger
There is good news for Meyer Burger on the capital side
Meyer Burger said it wants to raise a total of CHF 200 million to CHF 250 million with a capital increase
also plans an investment of up to $20 million by taking over unsubscribed shares
DESRI and Meyer Burger have been working closely together in the US market since 2022
Meyer Burger said it expects to be ready for module production in Arizona by the end of the second quarter
The ramp-up of cell production in Colorado Springs is scheduled to start around the end of this year
as long as the necessary financing comes as expected

South Korea-based Qcells and a research group led by Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) have established a pilot manufacturing line for silicon-perovskite tandem cells in Thalheim
The project aims to speed up the technology’s mass manufacturing and market penetration
The so-called Pepperoni project will establish a pilot manufacturing line in Thalheim
The name stems from the broader project titled ‘Pilot line for European Production of PEROvskite-Silicon taNdem modules on Industrial scale' or PEPPERONI
The silicon-perovskite tandem cells will have a bottom silicon cell based on Qcell’s Q.ANTUM technology
“The project aims to scale up the active area of perovskite/Si tandems from the 1cm2 of today’s record devices to industry-relevant dimensions,” the group said in a statement
The project will identify and address barriers to speeding up the technology’s mass manufacturing and market penetration
One of the project’s goals is to minimize scaling losses by using innovative materials and equipment
It will also develop thin-film deposition processers and equipment
with the ultimate goal of building a new production capacity in Europe
“At HZB we have developed the tandem technology to world-record efficiency level on lab scale,” said Bernd Stannowski
head of group industry compatible processes at HZB
“We are now looking forward to cooperate in the Pepperoni consortium with partners from science and industry to jointly scale this new and very promising technology up and transfer it to industry.”
The four-year project is partly funded by Horizon Europe
to a total of €14.5 million ($14.9 million)
It includes 17 partners from 12 countries across Europe
with a key objective to demonstrate 26%-efficient modules or higher on industrial scale

one church congregation from Houma began a long-term mission that they hope will impact the Thibodaux area
Grace Lutheran Church of Houma offers Lutheran worship services at 5 p.m
"Grace Lutheran Church has long desired to do some type of outreach in Thibodaux," said the Rev
who has been with the church for more than seven years
"Our hope is that this will ultimately grow into a separate Lutheran church."
With an exception to Grace Lutheran in Houma
the nearest Lutheran churches to the Houma-Thibodaux area are located in the New Orleans metropolitan area
Because of the small number of Lutheran churches in the area
many of Grace Lutheran's 250 members commute long distances to attend worship services
While benefitting Lutherans in north Lafourche
the Thibodaux services also will offer a more convenient location for the churches members who travel from as far as Morgan City and Patterson
and her family have been members of Grace Lutheran Church for nearly three decades
"We want to support the outreach effort here (in Thibodaux) as long as it takes to make that happen," she said
This is something we've prayed about for a long time."
Prior to Rudnik's arrival at Grace Lutheran
the church had attempted a similar outreach effort in Thibodaux in 2005
but their work was interrupted by Hurricane Katrina
"They shifted gears and focused on hurricane relief
It barely got off the ground before Katrina
Rudnik received a $7,000 grant from the John and Harriet Wiebe Mission Advancement Fund to finance Grace Lutheran's outreach efforts
Rudnik contacted Father Doug Lasiter of St
John's to discuss renting the Thibodaux church for Lutheran services
but Lasiter insisted on providing them with the space for free
I was expecting to rent a place in Thibodaux," he said
Grace Lutheran has built strong ties with local Episcopal churches
they have worked together to support each other
"We have a great relationship" with the other churches
The Grace Lutheran congregation began gathering in 1956 at the Terrebonne Parish Library
they held their first service at their first church building near Hollywood Road in Houma
the group was forced to relocate in 1983 to make room for the construction of Martin Luther King Boulevard
which would take several years to complete
While waiting for the completion of their new building on Valhi Boulevard
Matthew's Episcopal Church in Houma opened their church to the displaced Lutherans
1983 until the opening of their current church in October of the following year
Grace Lutheran held their services at the Episcopal church
Rudnik said there was no hesitation upon returning the favor for their Episcopal counterparts
Matthew's held services at Grace Lutheran's sanctuary
they let the Episcopal church use their facilities
John's will share their space with Grace Lutheran at no charge
Rudnik said he will use the grant money to fund other outreach efforts
"We're going to offer things to attract people that we couldn't have done before," he said
"We may possibly hold a shrimp boil event in the future
so that if something pops up that seems like a good idea
It's nice to have the freedom to do that."
Rudnik and Thalheim agree that students at Nicholls State University are a target population in their efforts
"We've always made our outreach effort in Thibodaux start at the University," Thalheim said
"We have students coming from different parts (of the country)."
Thalheim hopes residents who may not know much about Lutheranism will consider learning more about the denomination
"I'd like to see people open their minds — especially people who don't have a home church — to the possibility of becoming Lutheran and seeing what we're all about," she said
"That's what we're hoping and praying for."
Rudnik said he may also consider investing in similar efforts in the Morgan City area
"You never know what God can accomplish and how he's going to work things," he said
