Stockholm-based running label UNNA doesn’t care about finishing first place
UNNA prides itself on actively encouraging its wearers to finish in a good place mentally
It all starts with UNNA’s seasonal running collections
which comprise everything from tees and half-tights to vests and jackets
the offerings also carry a reminder to enjoy the process in their design
Take UNNA’s Smiles Club Tee, for instance, which, as the name suggests, is a wearable memo to smile. Or even its organic running socks
which reads “Good Place” branding on the rear
Founded in 2020 by John-Ruben Holtback, the designer behind now-defunct 2018 Woolmark Prize-winning label L’HOMME ROUGE, UNNA is pioneering a new era for “anti-performance” running brands that focuses more on the journey as opposed to the final destination.
UNNA, UNNAHighsnobiety: Let’s start from the beginning. How and why did UNNA come about?
John-Ruben Holtback: UNNA is a very personal project. I’ve combined two parts of my life that I feel very passionate about: on one hand, I’ve always been fortunate to work within design and fashion. On the other hand, I have developed a passion for movement and exercise.
I had a health scare in 2014 where I was hospitalized and had to undergo surgery. Two weeks later, I was back in the hospital, not feeling well. During this period, I was never given a proper diagnosis, so I understood that I had to take care of my own well-being. I tried a lot of things, but running really stood out. Everything fell into place, and I started sleeping well. I also saw that my friends were having similar issues with stress and mental health.
Running is miraculous—the peace of mind it brings and the synergy of body and mind is genuinely the real deal.
I wanted to create something more than a sportswear or fashion brand, but something with a strong voice, like a complete new world. [UNNA is] a place for people to meet with similar ideals and interests as myself. I wanted [UNNA] to be something cool and fun.
I’m a former founder of a brand called L’HOMME ROUGE, a progressive and pretty successful menswear label. To be honest though, we were all exhausted. It didn’t feel sustainable, both creatively and environmentally, to keep producing so many collections. Everything was moving too fast and there was never a break or enough time to stop and reflect.
We decided to take a break, but during that period we each found ourselves moving in different directions. For me, the idea of UNNA felt more interesting and purposeful, so that’s the path I chose to follow.
UNNA, UNNAWhere does UNNA fit into the current fashion landscape (if at all)?
I’m actually not too much into fashion these days, and if I do look at something it’s probably old collections from heroes like Martin Margiela, Helmut Lang, and Raf Simons or I listen to idealists like Rick Owens and [Yohji] Yamamoto. These people are more like inspiring artists to me, they feel above today’s fashion landscape.
I mean, what even is fashion? The lines feel so blurry. Fashion, for me, doesn’t feel relevant without the heroes. I’m more interested in longevity, storytelling, and visual communication, and in seeing how things come together to create the full experience.
Today, [fashion is] mostly the big companies trying to make the most money out of creativity, and I don’t enjoy that from a creative standpoint. I’m all about great product and curation, and building a brand culture. Financial success is, of course, extremely important, but it’s sad to see it become the primary goal for most brands these days.
Our vision is to inspire more people to run and feel better about themselves. Of course, some of our customers are ultra-marathon runners with a similar mindset, but I really try to cater to those who are not moving and exercising.
Don’t expect UNNA to give you the best tips on how to push yourself with hard interval training. We would rather do as much as we can to lower the bar for movement, to make it available to everyone. The next step will be to start building the brand outside of Stockholm.
There’s a lot of greenwashing out there, and I just want to say that there’s no such thing as a sustainable fashion brand. We cannot control the lifecycle of the product we put out there, but it’s our responsibility to create high-quality products that can have a longer lifespan. When we create new products, we need to make sure we’re leaving a minimal footprint.

The Zapp Group
which will celebrate its 325th anniversary in 2026 and has launched a major new investment project with the construction of a 12,000 m² production hall for precision foil at its Unna site
The company has come a long way in the past few centuries. Having started in the Leppe Valley of Germany as a small forging shop, Zapp is now a leading metals supplier and one of only a few suppliers in the world that can produce ultra-thin foil from stainless steel
This major investment will further expand its dimensional spectrum down to thicknesses of up to 0.015 mm and widths of up to 650 mm
As well as targeting products for the clean energy sector
such as foils for fuel cells and substrates for superconductors
a major application for such ultra-thin foil is for Fine Metal Mask (FMM) manufacture
Zapp has already established itself as one of the leading suppliers in this market
having developed its Zapp SuperClean Invar 36 foil with a key supply partner several years ago
The product is however constantly being improved and Zapp has already invested significant sums into various testing and measuring devices to characterize its foil products
The latest addition being a new scanning electron microscope to enable various material characterization techniques
Zapp engineers understand the high demands of FMM products and tailor their foil products to address these
Features such as the accuracy of through-holes
with regards to the contour and taper angles
and the accuracy of the FMM pitch in the x and y directions are key parameters for OLED display makers
This in turn requires Zapp to produce foil products with the tightest thickness tolerances
optimized shape and near perfect surface condition
as well as with virtually no residual stress
“The challenge is to produce these product features in combination
as changing one parameter can effect many others” says Head of Material Technology for the Zapp Group
“As the demand for our Zapp SuperClean Invar 36 foil is increasing
we could no longer meet our customers' requirements in the coming years with our current equipment
The construction of a new production facility means that we will be able to improve our foil quality even further
to meet the future quality demands of our customers.”
much of the experience and know-how gained by the Zapp engineers over the course of the Zapp SuperClean Invar 36 development has been incorporated within the design of the new production equipment as a number of special features
As the demand for OLED displays in many consumer goods and IT products is forecast to increase for several years to come
the timing of Zapp’s investment could not be better
Paul Campbell said “To be able to support the market demand
we have decided to invest in a start-of-the-art foil production facility to be able to offer our customers adequate capacity
a wider dimensional spectrum and to further improve the quality of our products
“We are very happy to have received such strong backing from our supervisory board and shareholders to build upon the hard work that has already been carried out over the past few years
and our customers can rest assured that we will continue to push our boundaries and do all we can to support their growth in the OLED market.”

Swedish label UNNA has unveiled its first ever collection
mixing athletic and fashion references to craft a range of sustainably-produced activewear
The brand’s ethos — which is reflected in its name
a Swedish phrase meaning “treat yourself” — is to encourage people to live a more active life and find joy in movement
The debut collection features lightweight running jackets
The collection’s sustainable focus comes from its materials — all of which are recycled
organic or of a similar certification — and through a pre-order system that will launch later this year

addressed the governance challenges of combating cyberattacks
"As seen in regulators' responses to cyber incidents in recent years
even in cases where state-sponsored attacks are anticipated
organizations are still expected to maintain an appropriate level of cybersecurity and data protection in accordance with applicable regulations
This includes implementing suitable security measures
ensuring oversight by relevant executives and corporate officers
She also discussed legal challenges faced by companies in relation to AI systems
Zlaikha noted that while AI holds vast potential
organizations must also consider the associated risks
She stressed that corporate executives should promote a suitable corporate governance framework for AI risk management
including the formation of a dedicated team comprising business
issuing clear employee guidelines for AI system usage
"Most cybersecurity breaches in 2024 originated from identity theft facilitated by easily accessible infostealer software purchased by attackers
enabling the theft of all data stored in browsers," said Itzik Kesler
Kesler explained that such attacks are becoming increasingly costly and difficult to detect
as attackers exploit legitimate corporate accounts
"These compromised accounts 'leak' into the dark corridors of the Internet
and create a snowball effect that can severely impact critical systems," He warned

Israel last month thwarted a cyberattack on control systems at water facilities
a senior government official said Thursday while warning of the dangers of escalating conflicts in cyberspace
The “synchronized and organized attack” on civilian infrastructure was aimed at disrupting the industrial computers that underpin Israeli water facilities
head of Israel’s National Cyber Directorate
in the most extensive public comments from an Israeli official yet on the incident
Damage could have been done to those systems if Israeli authorities hadn’t foiled the attack
“We’re now in the middle of preparing for the next phase [of attacks] to come — because it will come eventually,” he said in a speech streamed at the CybertechLive Asia conference
Public details on the attack are scarce, as Israeli officials have not released forensic data in connection with the incident. The Israeli cyber directorate issued a terse statement in late April about attempted breaches of water pumping stations and treatment plants
and urged companies in the sector to take defensive measures
Multiple media reports blamed Iran for the malicious activity
(CyberScoop could not independently confirm this attribution.) The Iranian government has denied involvement
“We are not attributing or saying anything officially about who’s behind it,” he said
In retaliation, Israeli hackers breached computers at an Iranian shipping port in early May, according to a Washington Post report
Unna suggested that Israel may have hit back at Iran for the cyberattack
“Maybe and maybe not,” he said
“It seems like there are new rules of engagement
Galina Antova, co-founder of industrial cybersecurity company Claroty
said the attempted cyberattack on Israeli water systems “highlights that while water infrastructure typically eludes the public’s attention as a major source of cyber risk
it remains susceptible to both targeted and non-targeted threats.”
Israel and Iran — two bitter enemies — have long conducted cyber-operations against each other as part of a broader regional conflict. More than a decade ago, suspected U.S. and Israeli intelligence operatives used the Stuxnet computer worm to sabotage centrifuges at an Iranian nuclear facility
The coronavirus pandemic has reaffirmed that hackers are unwilling to refrain from attacking critical infrastructure
Red lines will continue to be crossed, he said, referring to recent cyberattacks on the Czech health care sector
“Cyber winter is coming and coming faster than even I suspected.”

National Cyber Directorate Head Yigal Unna | Photo: Oded Karni
Walking into the Tel Aviv office of Israel National Cyber Directorate Head Yigal Unna, you immediately notice a very specific memento – a weighted plaque with a golden plate that he was awarded by his counterparts in the United Arab Emirates. Unna was part of the historic delegation that traveled to Abu Dhabi last month after the landmark peace deal between Israel and the UAE was announced
and the plaque sheds light on the deep cyber and technological ties between the two countries
"The potential vis-à-vis the UAE is endless," he told Israel Hayom
and capabilities that can offer the issues they're dealing with the best solutions in the world
Israel is one of the most protected countries in the world
We want them to be as protected as we are."
Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter
until recently Israeli companies pursued only defense deals in the Persian Gulf
trade can expand to include economic and industrial ventures
"There are many overtures by Israeli and Gulf companies that want to get started
The cyber sphere connects people and Israel is a powerhouse in this arena – one considerably larger than its physical size or the size of its economy
We have something for every actor in the region
and they all face similar threats as Israel," he explained
Israel routinely sustains an incredibly high number of cyberattacks – the price a very technologically advanced country has to pay when it deals with its enemies
such as criminal organizations or countries on the other side of the world
His agency guards every entity in the public and private sectors – from critical state infrastructure and state-owned corporations to the home computer of the very last member of the public
Unna has spent most of his professional life in the shadows
making this the first time he has ever given a press interview
He is married and the father of three teenage sons
He skipped a grade in school and enlisted in the IDF at the age of 17
the elite Military Intelligence division responsible for collecting signal intelligence and code decryption
He later underwent training as a cyber-intelligence officer
rising to the rank of captain before leaving the military
Unna set his sights on becoming a Mossad intelligence agency officer
but the Arabic he studied while in uniform led him to Israel's internal security service
where his experience in cyber operations was put to use by the agency's operational directorate
He went on to spend his years in the Shin Bet in technology-oriented positions
Unna was named head of the agency's technology division
and in 2018 he was tapped as head of its cyber division
"It's the type of job that doesn't let you sleep at night," he said
"You can't revel in yesterday's achievements because every day brings new battles and the smallest breach can cause significant damage."
The National Cyber Directorate was effectively established in the 1970s and has undergone several reincarnations since its inception
defending the nation's computer infrastructure was entrusted to a small unit in the Shin Bet
but it wasn't until 2002 that the government officially asked the agency to protect critical infrastructure
bringing about the formation of the Information Security Directorate
it became clear that the Shin Bet was unable to fully meet the wide range of threats lurking in cyberspace
and that even nonessential state infrastructure faced challenges that must be met
"It happened when we noticed cyberattacks on states
and even the mishap that happened to the centrifuges in Iran," Unna said
referring to the 2007 Stuxnet computer virus that crippled the Islamic republic's nuclear program in an operation largely attributed to the United States and Israel
"This process made us acutely aware of the fact that it [cyber] had the potential of becoming a battlefield."
then-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Maj
formerly head of the Defense Ministry's Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure
to head a project dubbed the "National Cyber Initiative."
The latter outlined Israel's cyber-defense doctrine
which led to the inception of the National Cyber Bureau in the Prime Minister's Office
The NCB was tasked with planning Israel's cyber strategy
was tasked with the operational aspects of putting the strategy into action
the two were united under the National Cyber Directorate
the National Cyber Directorate reports directly to the prime minister
Over half of its workforce comprises women
and about two-thirds are in cyber – from programmers and analysts to hackers
We specialize in defending the 'blue zone,'" or Israel
Q: But in order to protect the 'blue zone' you need to be in the enemy's 'red zone.'
"Israel should also be in the 'red zone' and there are other elements in the defense establishment that do that [mainly Unit 8200
Said cooperation includes knowledge-sharing and if need be
with every agency lending its expertise in defense or offence to achieving the objective
In mid-May, Israel faced what was believed to be a failed Iranian cyberattack on its civilian water infrastructure
Unna refused to comment on the identity of the attacker but said the hack caused no damage
"As far as I'm concerned this crossed a red line in terms of having the gall to target civilian infrastructure
even if the actual attack was a low-level one," he said
According to the Washington Post, the immediate response that was attributed to Israel came in the form of cyber retaliation directed at Iran's Shahid Rajaee Port
leaving operations in one of its most important water passageways in what the report described as "total disarray."
saying only that "we are likely to see other red lines crossed
and escalation and attempted cyberattacks by hostile elements
That's one of the issues with this dimension – it has a very low entry threshold
You don't need an air force or other strategic weapons – you can learn these things online
take talented teens and shape them any way you want."
"Every actor in this theater has to be treated with respect because in cyber
even a small 'David' can surprise you and we really don't want to be the 'Goliath' on the other end of the attack
Someone without the backing of a major power could come up and inflict serious damage."
Q: Do you recognize such potential in our adversaries
"The cyber arms race exists all over the world
Q: Does the average Israeli need to be concerned
but you have to be aware of the dangers," he said
The average Israeli "doesn't know how dominant this threat is
Like they say on Game of Thrones – 'Winter is Coming' and cyberattacks on Israel are only expected to grow stronger
"This is likely to reach massive proportions – that's something that has become evident since the onset of the coronavirus outbreak because everyone is working from home using digital platforms."
The National Cyber Directorate has two homes: it is headquartered in Tel Aviv but its nerve center – where every cyberattack against Israel is monitored – sits in Beersheba
"The heart of the Israeli high tech industry remains in the country's center but I hope that in a few years
after [Unit] 8200 and [the IDF's] C4I Corps move to southern Israel everything else will follow," he said
The first deals with the daily protection of Israel's critical infrastructure
as well as directs nonessential bodies with regard to their protection
via directives that come down through the relevant government ministries
Its Beersheba operational response center also addresses concerns relevant to every one of us
Data published here for the first time show that in the first half of 2020
the NCD's response center received 7,164 reports concerning cyberattacks of various levels
The second department deals with early detection of ongoing cyberattacks
The third deals with both proprietary and acquired technology
and the fourth deals with the cyber ecosystem – strategy
"Many countries are not willing to deal with the Israeli industry sans state backing
I'm authorized by the government to provide this backing," he explained
including some that do not maintain official ties with Israel
"The cyber defense field has opened many doors for Israel around the world
the very inception of ties with them – the fundamental of peace – was through cyber
The first [Israeli] delegation there included one of our guys
who was there to help them conduct a national risk assessment
"We also have an agreement with the Development Bank of Latin America
They currently have two cyber experts – bank employees
Spanish-speaking Israelis – who were appointed on our recommendation
Their job is to promote and improve cyber defenses in 22 countries in South and Central America."
The National Cyber Directorate has operational cooperation agreements with 90 countries
"It's an information exchange that operates around the clock," Unna said
"If something happens in South America at night – say
an attack on a bank there – they report it to me immediately and by morning we are ready to go with all the information necessary to protect our banks."
Cyber experts tend to rank Israel among the top-five cyber superpowers in the world
a cyber superpower "is a country that has world-class abilities and force that stands up to other absolute powers
"The list of the 'hottest' cyber companies comprises 150 firms
and that's without counting 10 other Israeli companies that are registered in the United States for tax purposes."
"Israel relies much more than other countries on information and information technologies due to the lack of other resources
When you add defense aspects to that and the fact that we are more threatened than others and are therefore required to defend ourselves
which is inherently less restrained – the result is a cyber 'cake' to be proud of," he said
Subscribe to Israel Hayom's daily newsletter and never miss our top stories
National Cyber Directorate data shows that in the first half of 2020
has raised $ 1.2 billion in 43 transactions
This period also saw the birth of two Israeli "unicorns" – an industry term for companies valued at more than $1 billion – namely SentinelOne and Snyk
between 20 and 25% of all cyber "unicorns" are Israelis
about 29% of the world's cyber investments are made in Israel
There are currently 540 cyber firms in Israel
Israeli exports in the field of cyber defense stood at $6.5 billion in 2019 – a 600% increase since 2011
It is estimated that along with the cyber-offense field
Israel's exports of cyber technologies amount to some $10 billion a year - more than all classic defense exports combined

Interview By Elka Requinta
Photographs By Vianca Soleil Roquero
Vianca Soleil Roquero will not be rushed to finish her dream home and resort
which is built with the materials that nature provides
“A slow build,” was Vianca Soleil Roquero’s gospel in constructing Unna
an eco-resort nestled between a cove and a mangrove forest
located in the idyllic barrio of Puro Island
but Vianca is in no rush to open its doors haphazardly
despite her DMs flooding with inquiries.
earliest by 2023 we have to open,” she says
as she remains mindful of Unna Resort’s non-invasive construction
and impact on the existing community of Puro
we didn’t build with machinery or big trucks
I realized that the most sustainable way to build was to build like a local.”
Roquero is a trained interior designer and photographer who has worked and traveled in faraway places like Dubai
Her resort was born out of an all-too familiar story of Millennial burnout and a quarter-life epiphany
that “maybe it’s the simple life I’m looking for.”
After graduating from University of Santo Tomas’ prestigious Interior Design program
She was doing exceedingly well in her career
but exhaustion caught up and so did her doubts on grind culture and the path she was taking
I felt like my soul was at its happiest when I’d visit small towns in Tibet
Cambodia.” A slow build up to her passion project Unna
Vianca recounts how traveling forced her to question what living meant to her
it dawned on her that to live a simple life by the sea has long been her and her family’s dream.
was to look for materials in the province of Romblon
but I fell in love with the province,” she says.
staying in the retirement home of a Filipina woman and her French husband
he constructed simple huts made with the native kawayan (bamboo)
She understands that Filipinos may have an internalized disdain for vernacular architecture
it’s gonna look cheap.” But she was captivated by the retirement home’s understated Filipino design
using materials local to the environment.
she found a property in the neighboring island of Puro to house her modest childhood dream of living by the sea
I fell in love with the place because it reminds me of the old Philippines
still.” With her personal savings and the moral support of her family
she made the move to Puro by winging it.
she was welcomed by her neighbors and their children who would barter with her fruits in exchange for the apricots
and blueberries she would collect coming back from the occasional visits to Manila
My neighbors inspired me to have this outlook on life where I should learn to enjoy the simple things
Vianca attributes much of Unna’s slow build ethos and mission to her father
a doctor and former mayor and congressman for San Jose del Monte
he valued his work and connections with the community he was so loved by
He was basically my idol.” When he passed away
relatives and friends wondered whether Vianca would follow in her dad’s purposeful footsteps
“I felt that I wanted to make him proud.”
Unna is situated on an expansive beachfront
where the outside is as much a part of the experience as the huts’ interiors
“I wanted the outside to be a part of moving around the home and the community,” Roquero explains
All of the huts have wide openings.” And so the structure facilitates the natural interaction of an individual with their environment and community
Slow building in an inevitable process as Vianca furnishes and designs each hut only with what’s local and what comes her way
like a Noguchi lamp and iconic Frank Gehry wiggle chairs
she was intentional in sourcing most building materials and furniture
coming from and made by the craftsmen of Romblon
But I realized I had to be intentional with the process of building
I’m taking my time and making use of the materials around me.”
providing her with more discarded wood to give a second life to the huts of Unna.
she’s been focusing on the construction of the huts
and after a leisurely morning of hiking up the hill
checking on the construction progress.
she approached Unna by finding the intersection between different aesthetics
I wanted those to be more natural,” she says
adding how the interior and exterior walls are covered in pawid (coconut palm)
made of marble bits we collected from a neighbor’s shore.”
What influences her interior design choices also draws on the personal
Vianca shares why she included the quintessential Batibot chair
which she had painted in white: “I think it’s very much part of my childhood
Every time someone notices the Batibot chairs they always go
It reminds me of my childhood.’ That’s what I’m trying to tap into.” Additionally
and traditional raincoats she already had on hand
gathered from her travels to the Cordilleras.
She remembers acquiring her approach to slow design from her father
can we change it?’ and my dad would always tell me
‘Why would you replace something if it’s still doing its purpose?’ Back then
I wasn’t thinking about it much as an interior design student
As for ensuring that Unna keeps to its values of sustainability
Vianca says that funding the project solely comes from her siblings helping out and her savings from her time in Dubai
Which is how it stays a small enterprise.”
Vianca remains enthusiastic for what lies ahead with Unna
“I’ve traveled to a lot of inspiring places
I’ve been able to decide on what works for me and my aesthetic,” she says
“I’ve been marinating on it for the longest time
and it excites me to finally see my ideas come to fruition.”

Yigal Unna celebrated his fourth year as Director-General of Israel’s National Cyber Directorate
CTech, the English-language section of the Israeli tech and business newspaper Calcalist, called him “the man leading Israel’s cyberwars.” He is also a leading figure in the cyber “ecosystem” – a popular definition in the Israeli IT world – of the Jewish state
Recently Mr Unna attended a conference in Bari, in Apulia, organised by the University of Bari Aldo Moro and Israel’s Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security. His Italian counterpart, Professor Roberto Baldoni
Director-General of the National Cybersecurity Agency (NCA)
reports directly to the head of the government
the economies of Italy and Israel are often described as complementary
How would you define the relationship between the two countries in the cyber arena
When I got to this position in 2018 I already had excellent relations with my counterparts in Italy – although I must say that we didn’t find any relevant counterpart until recently
due to the lack of an Agency like ours in Italy
I looked forward to it because we have a similar state of mind when it comes to national security
it was fantastic to talk with professor Baldoni
characterised by the technological confrontation between the United States and China
how can two countries like Israel and Italy
We both have good economic and trade relations
We do realise the tensions at play in the current world
And that brings even more incentives for smaller countries to come together and work together
Here’s a relevant example I usually give behind closed doors
after Boeing cemented the strongest position decades ago
Europe came forward with Airbus and brought more than one country together; now it’s almost a duopoly
Perhaps that’s a good model for handling 5G and other things: more transparency
Examples include the Counter Ransomware Initiative and the Summit for Democracy
Is it still possible to speak of a united Western world in the cyber arena
All the bad guys work from other countries – and our cyber-agencies are not law enforcement
tried to close the gaps between nations; it’s all about speed and connectivity
working together regardless of borders: this is the new model for fighting this pandemic
And that’s why we have a Global Cyber Cabinet
a club of heads of cyber-agencies that we want Italy to join
The UAE’s involvement is one of the results of the Abraham Accords
I was in the historic direct flight between Israel and the United Arab Emirates in August 2020
It was the first time a cyber official joined this kind of mission to establish formal relations
This symbolises how cyber operations are now part of all the essentials
But there are also matters of innovation linked to everyday life
Some industry experts have described Log4Shell as the cyber apocalypse
Log4Shell is one of the most severe vulnerabilities ever discovered
but unfortunately it’s not the most severe and neither it will be the last one
The main job of our agencies is to be the first to detect and the fastest to close those vulnerabilities

an 18-year-old killer whale at SeaWorld in San Antonio
For months, Unna had been battling a resistant strain of a fungus called Candida, which is found in wild cetaceans. A necropsy will be performed to determine the official cause of death, SeaWorld said in a statement
All killer whale shows were canceled at the park in Unna's memory
"This is a difficult time for the SeaWorld team and all of Unna’s many fans
and we thank you for your thoughts and well wishes," park managers said
Unna, born Dec. 27, 1996, had been put on what the park described as a "novel" treatment of medications as they tried to keep the infection from spreading to her kidneys. Killer whales in the wild have an average age of about 50 years
Unna's death was the latest bad news for the park
died in November after experiencing gastrointestinal problems
The chain of marine-themed parks have been grappling with continued fallout from the anti-captivity documentary Blackfish and trying to say relevant against newer
SeaWorld has also been facing greater regulatory challenges, including at its flagship park in San Diego, where the California Coastal Commission gave the green light for a $100 million expansion of its killer whale habitats, but banned any breeding of captive orcas
SeaWorld has also announced that it will ditch its famous killer whale show in San Diego after 2016 and instead launch an "all-new orca experience" in 2017
The new program will be focused more on the "natural" setting
while also sending a "strong conservation message."

an 18-year-old whale who was born at SeaWorld Orlando
passed away on Monday after a months-long battle with candida
SeaWorld EntertainmentSeaWorld, which first announced Unna's illness in September, has sought to portray candida as a natural part of a wild orca's life, describing it as "pervasive in the environment" and saying it is found in wild whales and other animals
a respected encyclopedia of veterinary medicine
reveals that the fungal infection is often a result of captivity
"Captive marine mammals seem particularly prone to fungal infections," the manual says
"This common mycotic disease [candida] in captive cetaceans occurs secondary to stress
unbalanced water disinfection with chlorines
Unna's infection was also resistant to antibiotic treatment, according to SeaWorld's press releases. According to former trainers, SeaWorld regularly doses its whales with antibiotics
which is inadvisable as it can lead to drug-resistant strains of funguses and other infections
Unna receives treatment at SeaWorld San Antonio
Unna is the second whale to die at SeaWorld San Antonio in as many months. In November, a 2-year-old beluga died at SeaWorld San Antonio due to undisclosed reasons; belugas can live up to 60 years in the wild. Another beluga calf died in July at SeaWorld San Antonio at just 3 weeks old
The park said it would release the results of Unna's necropsy once it's complete
SeaWorld said that San Antonio orca shows would be canceled on Monday

so when her family did a thrift gift challenge last Christmas
the mother of two decided to share her tips with more than 17,000 followers on social media
"When you curate a thoughtful package tailored to the recipient's interests or collections
it becomes so much more meaningful than a standard gift," says Burch
a full-time traveller originally from Hawke's Bay
Sustainability is a hot topic over the festive season, when New Zealanders generate 30 percent more waste each year
Burch tries to buy items that are already in mint condition but if she finds something that needs a little work
"Almost everything else gets a good clean - either by hand
a run through the dishwasher or washing machine - depending on the material."
she scrubs wicker baskets and dries them out in the sun; she might prime and spray-paint candle holders and photo frames for an updated look; and she'll use scrunched up tin foil to rub off tough marks from silver and follow it up with a polishing agent
You can put together a gift set based on a theme
you could start with one standout item - a candle holder
or a piece of décor - and then select complementary items to pair with it
It's fun to mix and match until the pieces feel cohesive as a set."
try getting baskets from op shops and filling the bottom with shredded tissue paper
You can also use scarves as a reusable and multi-purpose wrap - perhaps the Japanese furoshiki style will suit your present
I like adding consumable items such as home-made sauces
or artisanal soap are also great additions to round out the gift."
Children love books and you can probably find some hardcover ones for just $1 at op shops
opt for classics you can typically find in thrift shops like wooden toys
or freshen up a soft toy by soaking and machine washing
look for high-quality pieces that can still be enjoyed by other children
Second hand children's toys (for children under 36 months) sold in trade need to comply with the Product Safety Standards (Children's Toys) Regulations 2005
according to the Ministry of Business and Innovation and Employment's (MBIE) Consumer Protection
Consumer NZ product test writer Nick Gelling recommends avoiding second-hand private sales and trying certified refurbished tech from retailers
which he says is less risky and provides you with protection under Consumer Guarantees Act
you have the same protection under the 'acceptable quality' clause that you'd get when buying new."
Not all refurbished tech is faulty; some are on sale because they were traded in for newer models
or may have been store display models or had their box damaged but not been used
If you don't mind a few signs of wear and tear on a device
you might opt for something on the lower side of the grading system
or average) can be hard to find as sometimes shops will recycle or strip them for parts
If you're buying it for children to do school work you'll want to consider several factors such as the operating system
A primary school kid might be more suited for a tablet than a laptop
whereas a senior high school or university student might need a more recent model of a device to ensure it can perform at the capacity they need it to
Gelling suggests sticking with local retailers for refurbished tech as it's easier to follow up with them if anything goes wrong
Burch sticks to shopping in person at op shops so she can consider the quality and whether something is beyond repair
She also suggests steering clear of overpriced items which can be found brand new and marked down at retail shops
Two of the biggest issues you might face with refurbished tech might be dying batteries and software support ending for security patch updates
which makes buying a phone or tablet more than two years old a bit of a gamble
"The existential threat to a device comes when those security updates end
we recommend you stop using the product altogether
lest you open yourself up to privacy leaks or malicious attacks."
check with the retailer about its condition - if a replacement is required you might need to factor that into your budget
if the model is more than three or four years old or from an obscure brand
it might be hard to find a technician to do the replacement for you
And you're out of luck if you want to replace the batteries in many wireless earbuds
MBIE business specialist Ian Caplin says being aware of potential safety concerns caused by wear and tear is especially important when buying some tech products or specifically for children
"When buying second hand products for children
you should check the items thoroughly for safety hazards
this can include things like loose screws and rough edges
or any small parts or loose strings which could cause choking
"You should also ensure that the product doesn't contain dangerous materials
such as small high powered magnets or button batteries."

Zhongwang's net profit dropped 8 percent year-on-year to 1.26 billion yuan ($200 million) in the first half
according to a report filed with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange
China Zhongwang completed the acquisition of Alunna through its indirectly wholly-owned subsidiary, Zhongwang Aluminium Deutschland GmbH, per an interim financial report from China Zhongwang.
China Zhongwang is the world's second largest, and Asia's largest, research and development manufacturer of industrial aluminum extrusion products. It mainly engages in the lightweight development of downstream fields such as traffic and transportation, machinery equipment, and electric engineering, and provides high-quality processed aluminum products. In the first half, the company netted USD190 million (CNY1.26 billion) in profit.
Alunna's main products include high-end aluminum extrusion seamless tubes for topnotch aircrafts. Its main customers include Airbus SE, The Boeing Co. [NYSE:BA], Bombardier Inc. [TSX:BBD.A], Mercedes-Benz and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, and it enjoys a leading position in Europe and the world.
"This acquisition can greatly beef up China Zhongwang's capability in seamless tube extrusion and further improve our product mix," said Lu Changqing, president and executive director of China Zhongwang. "China Zhongwang will provide resources to Alunna and provide financial and operational support."
China Zhongwang has been strategically expanding its global presence and has set up offices in Germany and Japan to support overseas sales. By acquiring Alunna, a company that boasts a leading position in Europe and Germany, China Zhongwang will further expand its presence in the European market.
China Zhongwang's affiliate, Zhongwang USA LLC said that it was preparing to acquire US-based Aleris Corp. for USD2.33 billion in August last year, but it did not complete the deal.

Marie Unna hereditary hypotrichosis (MUHH) is an autosomal dominant form of genetic hair loss
we identified a pathogenic initiation codon mutation in U2HR
an inhibitory upstream ORF in the 5′ UTR of the gene encoding the human hairless homolog (HR)
U2HR is predicted to encode a 34–amino acid peptide that is highly conserved among mammals
In 18 more families from different ancestral groups
delayed termination codon and nonsense and missense mutations
Functional analysis showed that these classes of mutations all resulted in increased translation of the main HR physiological ORF
Our results establish the link between MUHH and U2HR
show that fine-tuning of HR protein levels is important in control of hair growth
and identify a potential mechanism for preventing hair loss or promoting hair removal
