autistic and has learning disabilities and ADHD should be allowed a kidney transplant for a rare disease William Verden, 17, is being kept alive by dialysis at Manchester Children’s Hospital but it will stop working in 12 months at the most Health officials took the medical decision that William should not be offered the chance to have a kidney transplant At a court hearing in Liverpool on Tuesday Mrs Justice Arbuthnot ruled that a transplant was in the boy’s best interests “Although the chances of that lead to an increase in William’s suffering in the short and medium term it has the commensurate benefit which is there is a chance for William of long-term survival.” William’s mother said going to court was not something she ever wanted “As a family we still struggle to comprehend why William’s case has gotten to this stage but this judgment is about trying to look to the future “What’s happened is in the past and we now need to focus on trying to find the crucial donor who can provide William with the best chance in life.” McLennan said all she ever wanted was for William to be added to the transplant list and have his treatment continued until a donor was found “I feel it is the minimum he deserves and what any mum would do for their child.” Ami McLennan with her son William Verden Photograph: Family Handout/PAThe family’s lawyer said it was an “incredibly sensitive case which has prompted a really important discussion not only about William’s care but also about the wider issue of providing medical treatment to people with autism and learning disabilities” Davis said listening to the evidence in court had been tough for the family “Strong legal arguments were put forward as to what is in William’s best interests We’re pleased that the judge has ruled in William’s favour and understandably Amy and the family are overjoyed.” who is autistic and has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and learning disabilities suffers from steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome The court heard evidence that there was a 50% chance of success But William’s doctors argued the chance of disease recurrence after a transplant would be nearer 100% The hearing was told doctors could not agree to a transplant because William would suffer psychological and physical harm from post-operation sedation and ventilation to prevent him pulling out lines and catheters It was also argued that if a transplant proved successful then William would live a further 15 to 20 years before he needed another one joint group medical director for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust said of the ruling: “We welcome the clarity which this decision brings for William “The trust asked the Court of Protection to make today’s judgment because of how unusual “William has a rare condition affecting his kidneys and each treatment option had its own risks to his health and wellbeing That’s why we asked the court to make this difficult decision and why the judge noted that she respected our approach to establishing what’s best for William his family and our staff have all worked really hard together to support his dialysis; and we will now be liaising with William and his family regarding how best to progress his treatment.” The court of protection considers cases relating to people who lack the mental capacity to make decisions A number of people have come forward wanting to help after the family launched an appeal for possible donors The FEI has appointed the ground jury for the 2025 World Championships for young dressage horses The event will be held sport was short lived as the highly decorated young horse rider has come out of it to qualify Helgstrand's Be Sure for the Bundeschampionate In July 2023 the now 51-year old Möller made the surprising on 7 August In the M-level class with 19 competitors she topped the board with 8.34 points who was previously shown by Dane Thomas Sigtenbjerggaard 7.6 for submission and 8.5 for general impression The pair edged out Rieke Harms on Astrid Heise-van Dyk's mare Sanna von der Weide (by Secret x Rohdiamant) on 8.22 and new pair Hannah Laser on Gut Schönweide's licensed stallion Sky (by Sezuan x Sir the 2023 Verden Stallion Sport Test 2021–Despite being a drizzly dreary day weather-wise training and judging continued in the World Young Horse Championships on the very high level seen for the duration so far Saturday came with heavy misty drizzle and a cheeky breeze that found ways to blow rain all over you Still much preferable to the heavy tropical-style rain of Friday the chill has a way of seeping into your bones even when well equipped with layers of clothing topped by a waterproof jacket I write this story as I am seated at a COVID-Safe bar with a very large beer (when in Germany….) and awaiting some good hot soup I was not sure how much I would enjoy the show Saturday It was a given that the gold and silver would be between Kjento and Escamillo I had a vague idea who would battle it out for the bronze but I was expecting mid-80’s at best for that placing I would be beside myself to achieve such a score and anything scoring in the 80s is already better than good I just wasn’t sure where the excitement would come from I should not have had even the slightest concern as we all know horses will be horses and they delight in surprising us for better or for worse It was a true final with a standout winner and absolutely no tail end Escamillo (Escolar x Rhodiamant) is a truly special stallion His foals are seeming to have his stamp of quality Escamillo knows that he is a pretty special stallion and tried a few times to tell everyone exactly HOW special he really was but rider Manuel Dominguez Bernal of Spain quietly kept him focused on the test Manuel was given the ride on the stallion by Helen Langehanenberg he will keep the ride on the stallion but he doesn’t know the long-term future My impressions of his ride was controlled power truly world class walk and obedience to his rider every step of the way The judges’ report stated: “Really well ridden in the trot but could stay a little more engaged in the extensions 9.2” (silence from the 500-strong crowd who had expected more) maybe a tiny bit more uphill tendency at times… we are being picky Overall we think not just the horse but the combination is very good The scores of 9.2 for trot and 9.0 for canter for an overall score of 9.34 left the door open for Kjento Kjento (Negro x Jazz) ridden by the Britain’s Charlotte Fry but for the Netherlands for the ownership of the horse chose to make a rather relaxed familiarization around the arena Even halting and letting Kjento take in the spectators… in the drizzle Then she picked up the reins and was in competition mode They morphed from big quiet black stallion with cute petite blonde rider into a team that quickly made it clear I had the accidental opportunity on Thursday to watch them train I ALMOST walked straight by but I was enjoying the training of the walk pirouette and throughness and correct footfalls and then I put two and two together Not interested in making the biggest fanciest moves It is incredible to think how the combination I watched training transforms when they go down the centerline This suggests that this horse will have longevity in the sport That he is not trained at maximum power at home and it is just drawn on when needed for performance I KNEW before I turned to look at the score that it had to be a 10 Kjento is not a horse with a “10” walk but is good The canter is everything you could dream to have in a canter I think I used up all my adjectives in my report on the preliminary final He doesn’t miss a beat until the crowd breaks into early applause on the centerline startling Kjento out of his focus submission and perspective and we have our new world champion six-year-old The judges had nothing more revealing to add Some had better rides than the preliminary final They were openly and clearly rewarding good training with equal bend in each direction and a happy willingness through their body chances were that the submission score would be good Even better if the changes were big and confident If the rider looked like they were “making the horse” get the job done it affected both the score for the gait and the submission Crookedness was heavily penalized as was a lack of activity and lack of connection in the medium walk and pirouettes Many of the horses were left a little long for the pirouettes which reduces the chance of changing the rhythm but also creates a lack of activity The perspective score was a vote of confidence for virtually every horse All were good horses with a clear direction towards good FEI Beata Stremler on the absolutely gorgeous stallion For Magic Equesta (For Romance x A Jungle Prince) liver chestnut appears full of character and was a favorite of mine in the preliminary final where they placed in fifth elastic and powerful with high quality half passes Judges comments: “The trot was lovely and light footed we gave 9 again” Rider Beata is grinning broadly at this stage “Throughout the test was a slight suggestion that he wasn’t always accepting the contact it just varied subtly and I think this came out in the canter So the canter was a little tight at times although he performed all the work correctly but we gave an 8 as he just could have stayed a little more supple through his topline nice presentation and a 9 for perspective.” You could see Beata being shocked delighted and then a look of disbelief as the overall score of 8.64 came up and she realized that she had bronze what her hopes had been for this competition She was totally honest: “ I only hoped that I would not make a mess.” Probably the biggest disappointment of the day was for Simone Pearce on the Hanoverian stallion Dancier Gold (Dancier x Weltmeyer) They came into the final with a seriously good chance for bronze This stallion has a very cadenced impressive trot Simone knows how to ride good shoulder-in and half pass The extensions were not as easy as we have seen but still good enough for 8.8 He has a good ability to relax and show good overtrack in the extension and then collects well for the pirouettes In the canter he started to look like he was losing forwards desire His ears were going back and Simone was obviously working much harder than expected The reason became abundantly clear when half way through the canter tour he literally stopped and manured There was no moving him until this was done The crowd gasped and then you could hear their hearts going out to her He went right back to canter but the damage was done The first thing the judges said was that “stallions will be stallions and when you have to go you have to go.” No-one could have seen it coming but it affected both the canter score as the work never really settled back into a rhythm The overall score of 8.44 left them in sixth place The horse that really changed rankings was the Westfalen gelding Briatore (Belissimo x Dresemann) ridden for Switzerland by Andrina Suter The pair finished 12th in the preliminary class This combination rode a textbook test in Saturday’s final transitions ridden to their best potential and four big confident changes He was not particularly exciting to watch but soft engaged gaits that were very easy and enjoyable to watch A submission score of 9.0 helped with their overall score of 8.56 and 4th place The 4-year old Maracana and the 5-year old Franco Nero became the high scoring dressage stallions in the sport test held in Verden In the 4-year old division nine stallions appeared at the starters' line and 8 passed after one was withdrawn Gestut Bonhomme's Maracana (by Millennium x Lord Loxley) topped the board with an 8.62 total score He was presented by Lena Waldmann and scored 8.8 for walk and 8.8 for rideability and general impression Rebecca Gutmann purchased Maracana for 700,000 euro at the 2017 Westfalian Stallion Licensing In 2018 he scored 8.34 in the 14-day suitability test The 4-year old runner-up was Axel Windeler's Hanoverian bred Royal Palace (by Royal Classic II x Royal Blend) who scored a total of 8.40 points 8.3 for rideability and 8.7 for general impression In the 5-year old division six stallions participated and all passed the test although Don Djamilo (by Don Nobless) and the Westfalian licensed Velvet (by Van Vivaldi) scraped by with 7.57 and 7.59 points The best scorer was Franco Nero (by Franziskus x Sorento) He scored a total of 8.24 points and got 7.8 for walk  The runner-up was Gestut Bonhomme's Dimagico (by Dimaggio x Jazz Time) with an 8.06 score 9 for walk and 8 for rideability and general impression Complete scores here Photo © Petra Kerschbaum Related LinksDancier Gold and Finest Selection, High Scorers of 2019 Verden Stallion Sport TestGaitano and Jovian, High Scorers at the 2019 Munster Stallion Sport Test Early this morning I was asked to dig up archive photos from the 2005 Bundeschampionate and while I was rollerdecking through my old CDs I came across those of the 2005 World Young Horse Championships in Verden My own trainer was selected to represent Belgium at the time and it was the year that Damon Hill (under Helen Langehanenberg) and Florencio (with Hans Peter Minderhoud) won I found a few fun "treasures" on those CDs that are too good not to share Can't Get Enough?? Check out photo archive for more 2005 WCYH pictures 2021–You all know by now that Eva Möller of Germany won the World Championship five-year-old qualifier on Danciero 7 (Dancier x Fuechtel’s Floriscount) so instead of telling you all about him at the start of my story you can experience my morning just as I did The early bird gets the worm is a familiar saying in my world in this case the early bird got to watch some sublime five-year-old dressage horses strut their stuff which is actually really LATE in the world of horses but jet lag sometimes makes it seem AWFULLY early We are conditioned to believe that the earlier rides in any class at a championship are likely to be less proficient than those toward the end of the class I am well aware that the draw for these championships is totally random so even if the first ride is an unknown rider and horse I reported Wednesday that the pandemic and the different demands of training when not going to competitions was very beneficial for the six-year-old horses The same holds true for most of the five-year-old horses that there really was a significant tail end in this class The typical five-year-old horse is so difficult to plan ahead with When they qualify they often feel like entirely different creatures by the time championships arrive A quick look at the start list showed that Eva Möller was riding Global Player at 9.08 a.m. Las Vegas (Ferdeaux x Wynton) ridden by Franka Loos from the Netherlands didn’t ring a bell but I figured I would be ready for that ride My hotel is a massive 10-minute stroll to the facility On arrival at the grounds I had to plug in the computer all that time-consuming stuff… and then make the five-minute trek to the show arena Turns out that I literally only just got there in time The coffee had barely started to seep into my jet lagged brain when I started taking photos thinking “Is this really as good as I think it is?” Las Vegas is a big loose elastic stallion that had top quality in all three gaits uphill and the best part about it was that none of us expected it The judges were generous for what was the first horse of the day if he had gone even a few horses later he would likely have scored a touch higher So as those around me were all still going Where did that come from?” In comes Eva Möller on the stallion Global Player (Grand Galaxy Win x Blue Hors Don Schufro) I was expecting to see real quality but was still somewhat blown away My notes on his trot read “All of the quality of the first horse but in a smaller package.” I guess the judges agreed as his trot also scored 9.2 He showed a very good effort for the reinback I swear everything in his body moved in synchrony good overtrack and just the most correct use of his back elasticity a steady frame and an almost impossibly beautiful connection and sublime transitions; 9.6 for canter 9.7 for perspective and 95.000 overall for third I then had a chance to study the start list again as I knew there were a few horses by newer sires that had caught my interest The stallion Franklin (Ampere x Ferro) has been making some very interesting riding horses I have seen a couple in the flesh and some interesting ones on video I also loved Hesselhoej Donkey Boy (Dancing Hit x Milan) when he competed in these championships and have been itching to see some ridden progeny I have also heard good things about Ferguson (Floriscount x Lauries Crusader) it was clear the first group of horses were going to keep my attention Francis Drake (Franklin x Blue Hors Don Schufro) ridden by Leonie Richter was the fourth to go This horse also had a trot filled with positive energy and a good amount of cadence He has just a hint more knee than some others Very clear difference between the collection and extension In the walk he had a beautiful reach to the bridle so the hind leg has plenty of room for overtrack The canter was just so very uphill and balanced through all the transitions The transitions I am talking about are not just the walk to canter or canter to walk but also from the extended trot to collected trot and then halt and reinback from the medium canter on the circle back to collected canter on the long side at E The horses that did it well truly achieved that transition in one or two fluid strides with zero loss of balance or change in the frame that transition is almost impossible on most five-year-old horses Just a reminder that we are at World Championships Francis Drake scored overall 89.400 to end in 8th place The next one to give me goosebumps was the Danish stallion the son of Hesselhoej Donkey Boy x Blue Hors Zack Skillfully ridden by Jeanna Hogberg for Sweden His trot is just so light footed it barely seems to touch the ground I think it may be my favorite trot of the day score 9.5… although it’s a pretty close competition He has the most sweet engaged expression on his face through the test with great power and quick with the hind leg without ever sacrificing ground cover Score 9.5 There was the occasional lack of attention and unsteadiness in the frame and a less than perfect reinback which brought the submission down to 8.7 This particular test has a half circle of stretching trot It proved quite illuminating for some horses Eva is the absolute master of this movement and both stallions she rode gave textbook examples There were quite a few horses that come well behind the vertical when asked to stretch This was nearly always reflected with the submission score Just a couple of horses had that overdone man-made cadence that used to epitomize the young horse classes their trots fell to pieces when asked to stretch… or they simply didn’t stretch (For Romance x Lord Sinclair) ridden by Sandra Kötter for Germany had a very powerful trot with tons of cadence and an almost crazy active hind leg rhythm and mechanics were the same throughout I was really interested to see her in the stretch circle She maintained the same mechanics with slightly less height every stride Sandra was working quite hard to maintain the frame here and there and her submission score was 8.8 My absolute favorite of the day was the rather petite KWPN mare Lightning Star (Ferguson x De Niro) ridden so very beautifully by Kirsten Brouwer for the Netherlands Beautiful clear definition between the collected and extended trots Absolute balance maintained through the 10-meter half circles One of the few to not go crooked or wide behind and then she went into one of those “slinky” walks that you could sit on all day She demonstrated a perfect stretching trot and I was completely For brief moment a MARE was in the lead with an overall score of 95.200 Kirsten could be seen wiping the tears away as she left the arena after seeing her scores but I had forgotten just what a competition rider Eva is She made sure the stallion Danciero 7 (Dancier x Fuechtel’s Floriscount) didn’t throw away a single point I thought the trot was ridden fractionally over tempo the test could not have been more accurate but I just felt a little breathless by the time she arrived at her Eva made a point of showing how beautifully the stallion reached for the contact The highlight was unequivocally the canter The transitions were so very fluid but clear I can’t imagine it was possible to ride it better The judges agreed with the only “10” of the day Danciero 7 whinnied throughout the trot tour but his frame and rhythm never changed so the submission score was high which just goes to show that some horses are allowed to talk through their tests without penalty (couldn’t resist a small joke) All of this happened within the first 18 rides The remainder of the class had flashes of brilliance Hannah Laser of Germany had a good ride on the stallion Damaschino (Danone x Fidertanz) to finish unequal fourth place with 92.400 but the test didn’t excite me It was beautifully ridden and he is an uphill elegant stallion and no doubt the highlight of his group I think that any one of the top six could finish at the top Auction rider Melanie Schmerglatt with auction horse La Centa by Londonderry/Weltmeyer it is nothing usual to give horses numbers And it has nothing to do with devaluing the horse Moreover it serves to create a good overview The numbers in front of the name of an auction horse a carried throughout the auction period and even above that and in the stables the numbers are in front of every stall This way every spectator is able to immediately access all the information of the horse without having to ask someone what horse that may be Through these numbers information on the website and directly in the arena can be easily connected The auction horse we would like to present to you is the number 12 She is a member of the current collection and moved into her temporary home in Verden on the 4th of July with the start of the training During the 13 day auction period all horses are trained and ridden daily until they are auctioned off on the 16th of July Melanie Schmerglatt and La Centa on the way to the first official presentation of the auction horses last Sunday La Centa is by the successful State Stud Stallion Londonderry who already provided more than 250 auction horses and almost 700 of his descendants are registered as successful sport horses La Centa is a typical Londonderry daughter She finished the mare performance test with above average scores: 9.0 for the canter According to auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener La Centa is in the perfect state to go to the auction clients get a good feel of her during the test ride and can build right on with the training at home the four-year-old mare is ridden by Melanie Schmerlatt and groomed by Marina Lemay she had to go through another vet check upon arrival At the beginning of each auction period auction manager Frank Reimann thoroughly examine every horse before the participants are allowed to move into their stalls and start the training Marina immediately appreciated the chestnut mare: “La Centa is well behaved; she has been taught good manners and is easy to handle in the daily routine from picking out her feet over tacking her up to all the handling inside and outside the stalls.” as well as for the other 97 auction horses The riders and grooms jointly take care of their horses Melanie gives La Centa an extra portion of hay her parents Linda and Rainer Schmerglatt also made their way into the horse world through the Verden Auction Then all the horses get their morning grains which the equerry mixed with some carrots Satisfied silence with only the chewing of the horses as the teams goes for breakfast Always present to support horses and rider: Trainer Hans-Heinrich Meyer zu Strohen After breakfast the daily vet check follows The grooms take the temperature and vet Dr Reimann and auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener look at the horses The well-being of the horses is the utmost priority and trainers come together at this point and get evaluated before the training starts The first days of the auction period serve to get the horses acclimatized to the new environment and the new rider The focus is to make the horses comfortable with everything and give them a good feeling with all that is going on around them Even though the first official presentation does not take place before about a week into the auction Every morning a timetable for the horses is published online to enable interested buyers to just stop by and see their favorite horse During the warm-up horses and riders are supervised by no one less than Hans-Heinrich Meyer zu Strohen German National Trainer for Young riders as well as for Young Dressage Horses He knows the riders and his lifetime experience is a great asset to the team He helps to carve out the strength of every horse and has a good feel for the right balance between work and relaxation the horses go into the auction arena where they briefly present themselves in walk This brief presentation allows the customer to see all the horses in a very short amount of time and objectively compare all of them Groom Marina Lemoy preparing La Centa for her daily training the customer watches La Centa during the training and Janine answers last questions Melanie and Janine provide help where needed and keep a close eye on their horses Especially for Janine it is important to see every horse not only under the auction rider but also during the test rides by clients to get a good feel for the needs of the clients as well as for the behavior of each horse which both allows her to help pair the right horse to the right rider rider Melanie brings La Centa back to groom Marina who takes care of the mare and gives her a refreshing shower After a little treat for the completed work she takes the mare outside to dry in the sun Reimann who can provide all necessary details on x-rays and clinical examination The customer wants to try and go for this horse; he immediately reserves good tickets for the auction day in Verden Her well-deserved lunch already awaits her in her stall Marina uses the time to get all the bridles back in order and clean everything before her lunch break Melanie takes La Centa out for some stretching – without rider or saddle just with a halter to let her run on the lunge as she likes to La Centa is seemingly relaxed and enjoys her free time “The young horses have to work a lot during the auction period It is nice for them to go outside just to do as they like afterwards IES Group specializes in assisting Having only been with the talented 5-year old for a short time Hayley Beresford was pleased with the results her Hanoverian mare Rebana W (by Rosario x Ravallo) produced at such an early stage in their partnership She felt that her 32nd place in her first ever Verden Championship gave her a great taste at the young horse experience "I enjoyed it thoroughly and found many aspects quite interesting," says Hayley "Although having only ridden Rebana-W a short while I find her a very very good horse for the future with high potential for piaffe and passage she is still growing and sometimes cannot control her body completely." Aware and accepting of the fact that the mare wasn't the typical young horse candidate Hayley felt that none the less the horse would have learnt a lot and will surely benefit from the experience Hayley has spent the last seven years in Germany and she is currently training with Hermann Gossmeier She enjoys her life in the heart of dressage but I love the intensity of the industry here," she confessed Beresford feels inspired having all the top riders around her and likes to take a little bit of something from everyone She hopes that her 2013 and beyond will see her keep on striving to be even better "I just aim to keep on improving my team and see where it takes me!" Finishing 27th in the 6 year-old preliminary test Jessica Greelish was very excited with her improved 8th place in the consolation final She felt that her young mare Cavalia (by Sir Donnerhall I x Gribaldi) went super well "Cavalia felt particularly super in the trot work and she was so brave," said Jessica "The prize giving ceremony or as the steward called it 'the cat walk' was so much fun to be a part of!" Joining the other Aussies on the grounds in Verden Jessica felt not so far away from home being able to hang out with all her fun team mates and all the other Aussies that made it over for the event "I haven't been back to Australia since I left two years ago Her first go at the World Young Horse Championships Jessica certainly hopes this won't be the last time she enters on a young talent particurlarly the all-important preparation "I trained with Andreas Helgstrand everyday in the lead up to Verden and I was also lucky enough to be able to compete at Falsterbo in the 6 year-old championship before Verden as it is a really interesting test and really gets your horse working." Jessica's Cavalia is known around the stable as "the cat" for her confidence and lightfootedness "She is such an interesting mix of a sharp and hot attitude to work but then she is also so brave I love riding her and am so glad Andreas found her for me!" Moving to train at Helgstrand Dressage in Denmark with Andreas Helgstrand in August 2011 Jessica has learnt so much from the Danish Olympian as well as many of the other talented riders at Helgstrand Greelish daily soaks up the atmosphere in the barn and is motivated by Andreas' talent and patience Jessica says he always seems to make his tests look so easy and she hopes to one-day acheive her international dressage dreams with the same finesse "The first time I saw Andreas ride in person was at the 2006 World Equestrian Games on  Matine," Greelish reminisced It was such an amazing feeling being part of a crowd that we all started clapping in time to the music before the test had even ended They were such an inspiring combination to watch Matine looked like she gave the passage everything she had Still challenged by a slight language barrier Jessica feels that Denmark is a lovely country to train in especially during the summer with its cute beaches "I live just outside of Aalborg and I've met so many lovely people in Denmark It's fun catching up with them all at the shows particularly finding the correct information as sometimes there is a language barrier but for the most part it is no problem

NO REPRODUCTION ALLOWED Back to the 2011 WCYH Index For American Emily Wagner and her 5-year old American warmblood WakeUp their maiden voyage to Europe to compete at the 2010 World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in Verden has been an exhilarating journey The duo finished fourth in the consolation class and ranked sixteenth overall in this international competition Wagner and WakeUp (by Wagnis out of Maiden Montreal (by Macho)) made a striking impression in the preliminary test and consolation finals with their outstanding presentation The black stallion was always light in the bridle and 22-year old Emily maintained an exemplary consistent contact with the bit outclassing many European professionalism with her riding The walk and canter are WakeUp's strongpoints The walk is extremely groundcovering and relaxed the canter work is solid and balanced with good scope Only in the counter canter the black stallion slightly lost the uphill tendency Though the trot was smooth and well regulated the 5-year old needs to improve on his strength and muscle tone in the back and loins as he still moves slightly disconnected between the forehand and hindquarters The supreme rideability and throughness of the horse were excellent though and Wagner earned a 7.82 in the first round and 7.94 in the consolation just losing the chance for a place in the grand finals Emily's focus and control of her riding were remarkable making her look totally self-confident at her World Championship debut "I was not nervous but rather proud to have the opportunity to show in the same ring as such amazing horses and riders," Wagner told Eurodressage "I was happy with the way WakeUp was going and really was just trying to enjoy the moment I very much wanted to make it into the Grand Final so the second test was "now or never" Missing Out on the Finals by a Nose Length With a 7.94 score Wagner was just edged out on the finals as she placed fourth and only the top three moves up The gap with third placed Jana Freund on Aaron was minimal as the German riding for Holland scored 7.96 This minor difference made the ambitious Emily feel a bit downhearted "It was not only just one placing but also just .02," Wagner expressed "If I had scored 0.1 higher on any of the five categories we would have been in My goal for the trip was to make it into the top 15 So I am disappointed I didn't get into the Grand Finale but was excited to be so close and 16th." The black stallion WakeUp was acquired by the Wagner family as a 3-weeks old colt and trained by Emily and her mom Jana Wagner to FEI young horse level Central Selection Trials for Verden with score of 8.23 and Wagner became the only American opting to travel to Europe for the show In Europe Wagner scored less than the points she is used to getting in The States This makes one wonder whether the judging is discordant at the World Championships compared to the U.S "I think with the high caliber of horses and riders the standards were higher and therefore the judging could be viewed as tougher," said Wagner "However I do think that the same qualities are viewed as important and it was good to see that the full range of scores were used." With a World Championship experience under her belt the Biology senior at Kansas University has added an impressive achievement to her list she can determine her own path for the future "The entire trip reinforced to me how fortunate I am to be showing my own horse," Emily admitted "I can build on this experience and use it for the future knowing that he is simply mine and the work we do together is ours." The conventional way of going would be preparing WakeUp for the 6-year old FEI Young Horse tests and quality again for Verden next year "The plan is to just see," she said solemnly "As we joke: planning with horses is like predicting the weather in Kansas next year." Emily is coached by her mother but also regularly attends clinics to get instruction and feedback from various trainers Wagner got the opportunity to work with Dr a multiple World Young Horse Champion rider Möller was amazing to work with and I hope to have that opportunity again," she said Over the years the presence of American combinations at the World Young Horse Championships has decreased instead of increased Americans have to fund their own trip to Europe which quickly adds up to a 30-50,000 euro enterprise for merely four days of competition Wagner and WakeUp are likely candidates to return to Verden next year would Wagner be willing to do it all again in 2011 "That is another one of those "we'll have to see" questions," Wagner admitted get the chance to see how we measure up against the best and have another great learning experience having to deal with the media and politics within it and the many small complications and details that come hand in hand with such a trip make one have to seriously think about the decision."
