By changing the battery in just a few minutes
Nio wants to offer an alternative to charging – whether for fast charging on the road or AC charging at home for those who don’t have a wallbox or have to park on the street
We covered over 2,000 kilometres in a Nio EL6 and learned a lot about battery swapping in the process
in order to emphasise the outstanding feature of its own vehicles – the battery swap – high investments in the corresponding swap stations are necessary
That will hardly be worthwhile without a sufficient number of vehicles
so it is an uncertain investment in the future
Or is that exactly what many drivers have been missing to make the switch to electric drives
Nio currently has 31 of the so-called ‘Power Swap Stations’ (PSS) in Germany
Compared to the number of petrol stations or fast chargers
But will this small network of charging stations be convincing by the end of 2024
And how big an advantage will it really be in practice
We carried out the test with an EL6 with the long-range battery – i.e
Over the course of just over 2,000 kilometres
we swapped the battery five times and also charged it from time to time
here are a few brief facts about the car: the EL6 is a 4.85-metre-long SUV and has a 360 kW all-wheel drive
Although the EL6 is only ten centimetres longer than a Tesla Model Y
it looks significantly larger – the high
beefy front and the high roofline with the steeply sloping rear make for a different appearance
while the chassis is designed for a high level of comfort – ideal conditions for many motorway kilometres
Nio delivered the test car – with a charge level of 53 per cent
The presented plan sounded simple: swap the battery
and just about make it to Sindelfingen with the new battery
the app seems to calculate with the WLTP range (529 kilometres)
the app doesn’t know that I have to be in Sindelfingen at 10:30 a.m
But the PSS in Hilden was still closed – all Nio exchange stations are open seven days a week between 7 a.m
and arrive in Hilden at around five o’clock
the only option would be to go to the Tesla and Fastned fast chargers there
sounded more sensible: a charging stop at Fastned in Limburg shortly after 6 a.m.
then a battery swap at the new station in Viernheim in southern Hesse
which had only opened a few days before our test drive
No sooner said than done: the motorway was clear for the first 170 kilometres to Limburg
as was the entire charging park at Fastned at this time of day
When I returned 25 minutes later after a visit to the local bakery
the EL6 had charged from six to 55 per cent – more than enough for the 120 kilometres to the battery swap in the car park of the Rhein-Neckar-Center
The battery swap itself is very simple: the swap is booked via the vehicle’s route planning
and a Nio employee confirms the booking remotely shortly before arrival
The station recognises the vehicle as soon as it arrives and opens the roller shutters
Once the car is parked in the marked area in front of the station
the driver hands over control with a tap on the touchscreen
and the car reverses into the station autonomously
The swap is ordered for a fee via the central infotainment touchscreen
It took exactly five minutes from relinquishing control of the vehicle to (manually) pulling out of the car park
It’s clear that you can’t charge a battery from 25 to 90 per cent that quickly in the foreseeable future
the power swap stations are usually not located directly on the motorway
but at car parks or car parks close to the motorway so that a station can be reached from both directions – ideally
they are located at a motorway junction so that four directions can be served
this is the Viernheim junction of the A6 and A659 motorways
the journey to the shopping centre car park involves a detour of several kilometres
Even though the battery swap itself only took five minutes
it took me almost 20 minutes from the exit of the A6 motorway to the slip road – and there was a small traffic jam in the rush hour at eight o’clock
20 minutes is definitely doable for a very fast-charging electric car and a free charging station right next to the motorway – even if it’s probably not 90 per cent
Having such a full battery has a big advantage for me: it saves me another safety charging stop for the return journey
which might otherwise have been necessary at EnBW in Rutesheim
I made it to Sindelfingen with 90 per cent and back to Viernheim to swap the battery again on the way to Frankfurt
the second stop of the day in Viernheim highlights a disadvantage: you have to stay in the car during the battery swap and are not allowed to open the doors
So we have to wait for the five-minute swap and then find a free parking space in the shopping centre car park – it’s after 7 p.m
The entire break in Viernheim thus took almost 40 minutes – during this time
you could have charged at the Tesla or Allego charging points
which are also installed in the Rhein-Neckar-Center car park
Without ‘waiting time’ during the battery swap
A brief summary after day 1: The almost 640 kilometres on this day went without any problems or major delays that could be attributed to the car
I would have taken a breakfast break with coffee anyway
but it could have been much shorter for the car
I would also have planned a break for dinner
so there was no loss of time due to the car here either
And the first battery swap in Viernheim saved time
because a corresponding charging stop there (or later near Sindelfingen) would have taken longer with the EL6’s charging capacity
even with a shorter journey to and from the hotel
The next morning, we travelled from the hotel in Frankfurt to the BYD event location in Offenbach – at this point, we would like to refer again to the driving report of the Sealion 7 that was written there. The return journey to Düsseldorf is scheduled for the afternoon
The EL6 plans to arrived with 14 per cent – but since I don’t have a wallbox at home
Although this is an ‘older’ second-generation station (there is a new PSS 3.0 in Viernheim)
the Nio is at the door with a charge level of 82 per cent instead of 14 per cent
That means over 900 kilometres in two days with only one real charging stop
the temperature doesn’t matter either
The only thing that matters is the location of the power swap stations
Nio put the PPS 3.0 in Viernheim into operation shortly before our test
the only real alternative on the route from the Rhineland to the Stuttgart area would have been the PSS in Waldlaubersheim – but that would have meant a detour via the A61 instead of the A3
I haven’t had any significant traffic jams on the almost 1,100 kilometres of motorway so far
Power Swap Stations are still so rare in Germany that you don’t have much flexibility when planning your route
There are often traffic jams in the area around Viernheim
but then you’ll be standing at the charging station for over half an hour…
That was exactly what happened on the return journey from Stuttgart
After another problem-free battery swap in Viernheim (the fifth in total)
the situation was similar to the return journey from Frankfurt: planned arrival with around 15 per cent
possibly another battery swap in Hilden in order to arrive with enough range for the next few days
I had to stop in advance purely for biological reasons – which was
The planned battery swap in Hilden was thus unnecessary
even if it took a while to recharge the EL6
it was probably quicker than another detour to the Hilden junction to the PSS there and back
Another trip with the EL6 took me from Düsseldorf to the neighbourhood of Kamen
the EL6 can cover the distance of just over 200 kilometres without intermediate charging if the battery is sufficiently full
one would need to stop to charge – or
add a significant detour to the Power Swap Station in Dorsten to our route
A small test that we carried out in Düsseldorf with a fully charged battery shows just how patchy the PSS network still is: How does the EL6 plan really long routes
it plans a 28-minute charging stop at Aral Pulse in Braunschweig on the Düsseldorf-Berlin route – even though there is a Nio swapping station just a few kilometres further down the road
The car calculated the arrival in Braunschweig with ten per cent
it predicted a three per cent charge level – already very little buffer for 340 kilometres
The Nio thus plans 5:21 hours for 560 kilometres to Berlin
but it’s also possible with other electric cars
The car has two charging stops for the 628 kilometres from Düsseldorf to Munich – a total of around one hour and 5:43 hours of pure driving time. Other electric cars can do better than that, and an hour’s charging time is a lot. When we planned a route to Berlin with a Porsche Macan in Metzingen near Stuttgart (with only a half-full battery at the start
the charging time for 667 kilometres was less than 45 minutes
the Nio did not plan a single power swap station
although some stations were available along the route – but at such intervals that they would not have given any time advantage
the EL6 planned to charge for 1:33 hours spread over three stops
it planned six charging stops with a total charging time of 3:29 hours
If the calculated test routes are taken into account
the added value of the Power Swap Stations is manageable – at least at the networks’ current expansion stage
the reality on the road is different; unplanned (charging) breaks can shift the calculation so that the car re-schedules a power swap station that was not taken into account (for example
the station in Lehre that was barely reached)
the swaps actually carried out in Viernheim have shown how a well-placed station (for your own requirements) can change the whole picture
Viernheim was perfect for my journeys to Sindelfingen and Stuttgart
even with the return journey on the same day
if I had carried out the test just two weeks earlier
the result might have been completely different – if I had had to take a diversion via Waldlaubersheim
So the battery swap saved a lot of time over the 2,000 kilometres
no question – but this is also due to the charging behaviour of the EL6
which we will come to in a moment in the conclusion about the car
I don’t necessarily see the big advantage of the power swap on long journeys
during which time the car can also charge – just for 20 rather than 40 minutes
Waiting for the power swap first and then taking a break is not really a gain in comfort or time – the car can also charge during this time
for example on the main roads into major cities
If you’re a lamppost parker like me and can swap the battery in five minutes without having to make a diversion on the way to work
Because that’s what happens when I need power but don’t want to take a long break – in other words
this also places enormous demands on the density of the network: I wouldn’t take any real detours for this
because then well-placed fast chargers (for example at supermarket car parks) can also cover my energy requirements without any real loss of time
I really enjoyed driving the 2,000 kilometres in the EL6
the seats are very cosy and a massage function comes standard
But what really made the long journeys enjoyable was Nio’s approach to software updates: Nio listens to its ‘community’ and implements changes relatively quickly
While the software and the beeping of the assistance systems were still really annoying when we tested the ET5 last year
the software made a completely different impression on the first drive in the EL8 this summer
You no longer feel monitored and controlled by the car
If the Nio still beeps or the Nomi voice assistant responds
there were occasional inconsistencies in the remaining range
One of several examples: with a charge level of 38 per cent
the car still estimated a remaining range of 130 kilometres on the driver’s display
the route guidance in the centre display indicated that we would arrive in 124 kilometres with a charge level of ten per cent – that doesn’t add up
but this is completely unnecessary uncertainty for an EV novice
Especially as the range even with the large battery (100 kWh gross
Depending on the cruising speed on the motorway and the outside temperature
we roughly consumed between 22 and 27 kWh/100 km
with just under 20 kWh/100 km possible at slightly higher temperatures or on country roads – in summer it could be even less
this resulted in a range of around 330 to 400 kilometres – with a full battery
As there are usually batteries with a charge level of around 90 per cent at the Power Swap Stations
this is almost 40 kilometres short of the possible range
While the range depends on the temperatures and your own driving style
the DC charging capacity is a major point of criticism
especially as the charging curve is not even completely flat
charging stops of 28 minutes are just about acceptable for me personally
but on some of our calculated long journeys
the car has scheduled charging stops of 42 minutes
The new charging system from the EL8 with up to 240 kW (only at charging points with over 500 amps) would be desirable
it is one of the smaller models in the Nio portfolio)
but it also offers plenty of space in the front and rear
Four adults can travel very comfortably in the EL6 and also take some luggage with them
Although it doesn’t quite come close to a Model Y in terms of interior space
it can certainly compete with the PPE SUV Porsche Macan and Audi Q6 e-tron – or the EQE SUV also mentioned in the article
And that is als Nio’s target group: with its high-quality interior
it is more likely to compete against the German premium brands than Tesla in the volume segment
the EL6 doesn’t have to shy away from comparison
Although Nio makes every effort here with its Nio Houses
it cannot match the brand trust of the established brands
The battery rental business model is also likely to put off many buyers
even if it is easy to do the maths: Up to a 72-month holding period
the same applies to the Nio EL6 as to all other electric cars – with or without battery replacement: just get in and try it out

Police say no one else injured after man reportedly took several people hostage in town near Frankfurt
An armed and masked man has been shot dead by German special police officers after storming a cinema complex in Viernheim, in the Hesse region.
The gunman had taken several hostages, all of whom escaped uninjured. A number of people inside the cinema were lightly injured when police deployed CS gas, reports said.
Police said they had no indication of the motives of the man who entered the Kinopolis complex at about 3pm local time, shortly after the start of the first screenings of the day.
The cinema had been showing The Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland and the comedy Central Intelligence. According to several reports in German media, the man was wearing a balaclava and carrying combat boots and a “long weapon”, with a munition belt slung over his shoulder.
Witnesses said the man fired four shots as he entered the cinema.
The interior minister of the state of Hesse, Peter Beuth, said special police forces had “fought and killed” the gunman. The tabloid newspaper Bild reported that police had found a hand grenade and an explosives belt next to the man’s body but could not confirm whether they were fake or real.
Footage of armed police at the scene of the shootingOne of the hostages, identified by Bild as 16-year-old Almir Almilovic, was quoted as saying: “The perpetrator surprised us on the toilet. He hissed to us: ‘Lie down if you care for your lives!’ We were around 17 hostages.”
German police’s special response unit closed off an area around the cinema complex shortly after the incident began. The police spokesperson Bernd Hochstädter said the deployment lasted around three hours.
Initially, there were media reports that up to 50 people had been injured.
According to the press agency DPA, police believed the gunman was a “confused individual” rather than a terrorist.
Hochstädter told the Die Welt newspaper: “We have no indications regarding the motive, but we can say with certainty that the attack did not have an Islamist motive.”
Germany has one of the highest weapons-per-head rates in the world, but one of the lowest gun homicide rates in Europe: 0.05 per 100,000 people, compared with 3.34 in the US.
Incidents of gun crime, including the use of weapons to threaten people, have declined by almost a quarter since 2010, a trend that many experts put down to gun law changes after a string of high-profile shootings, including the killing of 15 people at a school in Winnenden near Stuttgart in March 2009.
Germany is the only country in the world where anyone under the age of 25 who applies for their first firearms licence must undergo a psychiatric evaluation with a trained counsellor, including personality and anger management tests.

An armed man who entered a cinema in Germany has been shot dead, according to local media reports.
The man was reported to have entered the cinema wearing a mask and carrying arms, before taking hostages. He was shot during the police operation that followed, according Germany's interior ministry.
Police stormed the complex soon after reports of a heavily-armed man had taken hostage inside the cinema complex in Viernheim, according to local reports that cited the German interior minister of the state of Hesse.
Though previous reports had said that 20-50 people had been wounded when the gunman opened fire, it isn't clear whether or not the man actually used any of the weapons he stormed the cinema with.
Local reports also suggested that all other injuries had been sustained during the police operation, when officers used tear gas.
Spokeswoman Christiane Kobus had earlier said she couldn't give further details of what was happening. She was not able to confirm unsourced German media reports that an armed man had entered the movie theater and fired at least one shot.

BERLIN — Police say there is a “threat situation” at a movie theatre in a town in southwestern Germany which probably involves a weapon.
Police spokeswoman Christiane Kobus said she couldn’t give further details of what was happening at the Kinopolis movie theatre in the town of Viernheim, about 70 kilometres south of Frankfurt.
She would not confirm unsourced German media reports that an armed man had entered the movie theatre and fired at least one shot.
The BBC reports the man opened fire and that police surrounded the cinema complex, though it is unclear if there were hostages. German media says people have been injured, though that may be the result of tear gas, and that the gunman has been shot dead.

The bizarre attack in the town of Viernheim put the nation, which is largely unaccustomed to the kind of mass shootings experienced in the U.S., on edge. Some 30 police commandos rushed to the town of 33,000 people, 40 miles south of the financial capital of Frankfurt.
5:05 p.m. June 23, 2016An earlier version of this story originally said that the hostage-taking took place Wednesday. It took place Thursday.
No one besides the gunman was hurt during the two-hour standoff, police said. He only fired four blanks from the rifle, according to local news reports. Germany’s strict gun laws make it extremely difficult for anyone, even hunters or members of a gun club, to obtain a permit to have a weapon.
“The assailant was moving about in the cinema complex and gave off a confused appearance,” Hesse state interior minister Peter Beuth said in a short speech to the state assembly after the episode concluded shortly after 5 p.m. local time. “We cannot yet confirm that his gun was loaded with ammunition.”
“The special commandos were sent in to take care of the situation and overwhelm the assailant. There were hostages within range of the assailant, and that is why the special commandos acted to stop the assailant,” Beuth said.. “That’s why he is dead.”
Police said they do not believe the incident was a terrorist attack. Germany’s western neighbors, France and Belgium, have both been hit by deadly Islamist terrorist attacks in the last eight months.
Already tough gun control laws in Germany were tightened after school shootings in 2002 in Erfurt and 2009 in Winnenden left 31 victims dead. The new regulations helped cut the number of firearm killings in half, to about 50 a year, according to experts.
Germany is the only country in the world where anyone younger than 25 has to pass a psychiatric exam before he or she is allowed to apply for a gun license. Those applying have to wait a year, pass rigorous tests and have a legitimate reason for owning a gun.
Christian Pfeiffer, a leading expert at the Criminological Research Institute, or KFN, in Lower Saxony, said in an interview that all indications are pointing to a mentally disturbed perpetrator who may have wanted to be killed by police in a shootout.
“He evidently wasn’t planning to kill any of the people in the theater, because that would have happened,” said Pfeiffer, a former state justice minister in Lower Saxony. “I would assume that the assailant was an extremely disturbed individual who went in there with the intention of dying in a spectacular fashion.”

German police walks past a cinema complex after a masked man with a gun and ammunition belt opened fire in the small western town of Viernheim
Germany - A masked gunman took hostages at a cinema in western Germany on Thursday before police stormed the complex and shot him dead
acted alone and appeared to be a "disturbed man"
Police have not identified the man or established his motive
adding that nothing immediately pointed to him having a militant background
German television showed pictures of heavily-armed police
storming the Kinopolis complex in Viernheim
Cinema employee Guri Blakaj told Reuters the gunman
who was aged about 18 to 25 and about 1.7 metres tall
entered the cinema at around 3 pm and told workers to go into an office
who said there were about six staff and 30 cinemagoers in the building
Police special forces stormed the building and shot the gunman
The identity and motive of the attacker remained unclear
A police spokesman said investigators found no identification documents with him
There was still a heavy police presence at the scene into the late evening
and a helicopter circled overhead for several hours
Some 300 police officers and special forces were involved in the operation

Nobody else appeared to have been hurt in the incident in the town of Viernheim
Regional interior minister Peter Beuth said police special forces on the scene feared the gunman
would harm people taken hostage in the cinema
I don’t have any information that third persons have been hurt,” he told reporters
There was no immediate comment on the motivation for the attack
though Beuth said he “appeared disturbed.”
“I am personally analyzing intelligence leads at the moment and it’s too early to say whether there is a terrorism link,” said Elke Altmüller

Police in Germany are trying to identify the gunman who was fatally shot after storming a movie theater near Frankfurt
Police said in a press release late Thursday that the suspect was killed by special forces police after he took several people hostage at the movie theater complex in the small town of Viernheim
All the hostages were rescued without any injuries
“The motive of the assailant and the background of the incident remains unclear,” police said
adding that the investigation is ongoing to determine his identity and possible motives
interior minister of the west central Hesse region
said the suspect was carrying a long gun when he stormed the theater
and initial reports indicate that witnesses heard at least four shots fired at the scene
But police have not confirmed whether the suspect had a real gun
while several media reports claimed that he might have been carrying a blank gun when he stormed the building
Authorities declined to provide specifics about the ongoing investigation
A police official told German press agency DPA that there has been no indication of a religious-extremist motivation for the attack
A masked and armed man barricaded himself in a German multiplex cinema with dozens of people inside Thursday before being killed by police
No hostages were injured at the complex in the western town of Viernheim
75 kilometers (50 miles) south of Frankfurt
Hesse state interior minister Peter Beuth said
"The assailant moved through the cinema complex
"There were hostages inside and there was a struggle (with police) until in the end he was dead."
Beuth added: "We have no information that anyone (among the cinema-goers) was injured."
A police spokeswoman in the nearby city of Darmstadt confirmed that "all the hostages were unhurt and led out of the building"
Initial reports had referred to dozens of wounded people and several shots fired
and police dispatched heavily armed special units to the site equipped with helmets and bulletproof vests
"There was an acute threat situation," Viernheim police said in a statement
Later accounts said that several people had been hurt by tear gas during the police raid but this was also denied
Authorities said they had no information on the man's identity or motive
Media reports said they saw the gunman enter the building with "an ammunition belt" draped over his shoulder
I called the police and told them to come immediately," the cinema manager told Bild daily without giving her name
"We received a call at 2:45 pm (1245 GMT) saying that a man had stormed" the cinema
Security sources quoted by DPA news agency said there was "no link to terrorism"
after deadly attacks in cities including Paris
Brussels and Istanbul have left European authorities on edge
The Darmstadt police spokeswoman said they were investigating what type of weapon the assailant used
adding that it was possible it fired blanks

killing 15 people before turning the weapon on himself
Security sources quoted by DPA news agency said there was "no link to terrorism."

German Enfant Terrible Florian Heinke First London Solo Exhibition Unveiled
Florian Heinke has his first London solo exhibition at the popular Charlie Smith London Gallery in Shoreditch
opening this week. Heinke is known for his paintings that alternate between political polemics and transcendental beauty
Combining text and image only in black acrylic on unprimed canvas
Heinke’s methods are unique and highly impactful
Schooled initially on the streets of Frankfurt
Heinke discovered studio painting after being arrested for graffiti writing:
“Once I got arrested and they put me into a programme in a workshop
They offered me an alternative punishment: to work in their painting studio
I did my first canvas there with brushes and colour
Graffiti was just the valve to show my rage, incomprehension
Heinke went on to study at Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz before undertaking his Masters at the renowned Städelschule
Since then he has gone on to become one of Germany’s most vibrant young painters
exhibiting globally and being placed in prominent private collections
including that of Michael & Susan Hort in New York
Despite retiring his spray cans at an early stage
elements of street semiotics continue to endure
The use of text in both German and English; an absorption of advertising techniques; and a clash of imagery derived from various sources coalesce to reference high
‘ALLES WIRD GUT’ – translated as ‘Everything will be fine’ – will present a typically Heinkian worldview
the exhibition will embody Heinke’s ongoing notion of ‘Paradise Overdosed’
traversing contemporary and modern politics; celebrity; glamour; greed; beauty and decay

Rosemarie Pena is one of thousands of children born to African-American GIs and white German women post WW II
A magazine image of a so-called "brown baby,'' left
the only child of an African-American mother and father who made her feel special and loved
But when relatives whispered at family gatherings
One day she asked her parents if she was adopted
when Wanda Lynn discovered that she was born Rosemarie Larey in Viernheim
the daughter of a black soldier and German mother
sent some of the estimated 25,000 Afro-Germans to concentration camps
Many were subject to medical experiments or were forcibly sterilized
the stigma of bearing a biracial child was so great that many mothers brought their children to orphanages
which often placed them with African-American families in the United States.
Rosemarie Pena (her married name) is completing her master’s degree at Rutgers-Camden
researching the history of “brown babies,’’ as they were known at the time of their birth
as well as people who identify as Afro-German around the world
Pena also heads the Black German Cultural Society of New Jersey
an academic organization that connects Afro-Germans internationally
Its mission is to document Black Germans and inform others about their history
the society helps them find closure and connects them with others who share their experience
blacks comprise only 2 percent of the population and are spread out geographically
As leader of the black German cultural society
she has connected with a new generation of Afro Germans
whose German accents draw looks of confusion
“A lot of people think saying you’re black German is an oxymoron. People see them as foreigners
even when they were born there and have German nationality,” Pena says
Pena was abandoned by her mother as in infant
left on the snow-covered steps of a black military family stationed in Germany
They brought her to an orphanage and eventually she was adopted by the Haymons
Pena’s childhood in Willingboro was happy – except for the nagging feeling that her mom and dad weren’t her birth parents
Rosemarie Pena as a baby after her adoption
she tracked down her birth mother and learned some details about her infancy and abandonment
She invited her birth mother to stay with her for two weeks in the hope of establishing a relationship
but the two never grew close. “We were strangers,’’ says Pena.
who had two additional daughters that she raised in Texas
never revealed the name of her father and claimed to have been raped
her mother revealed details about her childhood
giving Pena an understanding of her mother’s inability to reconnect with her
was a concentration camp survivor whose father was shot to death before her eyes
but Pena thinks it might have been because he was a resister
and that followed her and followed her children,’’ Pena says.
Rosemarie Pena was born to a German mother and a black GI during World War II
Pena was adopted by an African-American family after her mother abandoned her in post-war Germany
Although she was unable to bond with her birth mother
after Pena learned her birth name had never been legally changed in the U.S.
she stopped calling herself Wanda Lynn and reverted to her original name
“I think it was part of reclaiming my true identity,’’ she says
“I didn’t want to cause my parents pain or disappoint them
but I wanted to be my authentic self.’’
Pena also continued her journey in search of her roots
She completed a second bachelor’s degree in German in 2010 after attending an annual meeting of an Afro-German group in Germany
“I felt like my soul was at home,’’ she says.
Pena has headed the Black Cultural German Society for more than a decade
the organization incorporated in New Jersey
the group will have its second convention on the black German experience at Barnard College-Columbia University
Pena has heard many stories from black Germans born long before World War II and during the post-war era
a former managing editor at Jet and Ebony magazines
grew up in Nazi Germany with an African father and a German mom
he wanted to wear a swastika and join the Hitler Youth
He soon discovered why he was barred from the group
but remained in Germany with his mother and managed to survive the war
Pena’s friend and fellow board member Carmen Geschke grew up in Germany without ever being told that her father was black
She was teased because of her tan complexion and kinky hair
But it wasn’t until her teens that she realized she was black
but she was grateful to find a group of black Germans in Detroit
“The biggest issue most of us have had is the need to belong,’’ says Geschke
The Black German Cultural Society provided her with community and helped Geschke gain a sense of pride about her black German heritage
I’m not some poor little black German girl who is alone
I’m part of a group and I’m proud of that group
We have mastered our lives and we’re happy.’’
stories like this are proof that the organization is achieving its goals.
“Because I survived physically and emotionally
I feel it’s my mission to do what I do,’’ she says
“That’s what motivates me and drives me to continue.’’

Downtown shoppers cannot stream into Kaufmann’s to buy presents
Just a few animated figures remain in some large windows while the display cases on Smithfield Street stand empty
the landmark that dominated a Downtown block shut its doors under the Macy’s flag in September
Kaufmann’s was the last store standing in a parade of retailers that left town
with the last two sticking around for a few minutes
The four Kaufmann brothers who founded and expanded this cherished Pittsburgh institution not only shaped the development of the city’s Golden Triangle but left a legacy of philanthropy
cultural innovation and architectural triumph
They began carving their path to prosperity in Germany as the sons of Abraham and Sarah Wolf Kaufmann
The family lived on a farm in southwest Germany where Abraham enjoyed a monopoly on the cattle trade
hot-headed and energetic,” according to a family history prepared by Alfred Kaufmann of Santa Rosa
Abraham offered the invaluable advice on which Jacob
Morris and Henry Kaufmann built a business
a fortune and charitable gifts that still make Pittsburgh a better place today
“Sell to others as you would buy for yourself
Good merchants make small profits and many sales
Deal fairly; be patient and in time your dishonest competitors will crowd your store with customers,” Abraham told his sons
the Kaufmann brothers saved and sweated their way to success
they experienced profound sorrow because three Kaufmann women died by their own hand
The four brothers spent $1,500 to start their store
but they were “millionaires in hope and confidence.”
Jacob landed at Castle Garden in New York City’s bustling harbor on May 12
stopping at farms and villages southeast of Pittsburgh in the Youghiogheny River Valley and lodging with local Jewish families
He saved enough money to send for his brother Isaac
Isaac was 17 when he left his native Rhineland village of Viernheim
sailed for America and joined Jacob in selling their wares as far south as the coal fields of Connellsville
the duo opened a tailor shop at 1918 Carson St
where they sold clothing to iron workers and puddlers employed at the Jones & Laughlin hot rolling mill or at the Eliza Furnace
Morris often slept above the South Side store
Kaufmann & Brothers moved to Smithfield Street in Downtown Pittsburgh
A picture of the store in 1879 shows signage that read: Kaufmann’s
Cheapest Corner Reliable One Price Clothing House Men’s Boys’ & Children’s Clothing.”
Kaufmann Brothers built a new structure at Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street
the corner where generations of Pittsburghers have met under a gilded clock
Before the time keeper with a fancy face was installed
the brothers erected a replica of the Statue of Liberty bearing a torch blazing with natural gas
their 12-story building had 700,000 square feet of space
Their Downtown location was convenient and their timing fortuitous
shipping and tin fueled Pittsburgh’s roaring industrial economy
to buy a Richardsonian Romanesque style townhouse at 913 Brighton Road on the city’s North Side in 1890
Located in Allegheny City’s Millionaire’s Row
the home still stands and features ornamental wooden fretwork
His widow pursued an unsuccessful lawsuit against her three brothers-in-law
claiming they offered too little money for her late husband’s share of the department store
her sons found another line of work by establishing the Kaufmann Realty Co
leased and managed property and ran their business from a Downtown building
the family name stayed synonymous with merchandising
Six years before his death at age 70 in 1921
Isaac recalled the store’s beginnings in a letter published in a local newspaper in 1915
“How ridiculous I would have considered the idea that the day would come when we would have 4,000 employees
and a store in which one could buy anything from a paper of pins to a diamond necklace — from a necktie to the complete furnishing of any kind of home — that we would spend as much in a single day for newspaper advertising as the sum total of our capital,” he wrote
“I was the head of the firm and the bookkeeper
bundle wrapper and occasionally the delivery system
And I am not ashamed to acknowledge that I put up the shutters and swept the floors,” he wrote

Kaufmann’s department store offered customers artfully designed spaces where merchandise was carefully arranged and sold with a personal touch
the Downtown store evolved from a place that offered cheap goods to one that emphasized stylish clothing
high-end art and finely designed modern furniture
cosmetics companies regularly offer “free” gifts with a purchase
but Kaufmann’s was doing that in 1877
You could buy a suit and receive a free pair of suspenders or purchase a boy’s overcoat and get a free photo album
jobs grew plentiful and Pittsburgh expanded from a frontier settlement into a city criss-crossed by streetcars that carried thousands of shoppers to Kaufmann’s
the store occupied the block on Smithfield Street from Forbes to Fifth Avenue and employed a sales force of 75
A hydraulic elevator carried customers to various floors while electric lights illuminated the building in an era when many people still used gas light
the store added women’s apparel and lingerie in 1886 and hired its first female clerk
Male employees who sold clothing also did two-hour shifts where they turned a crank that displayed a window mannequin
dressing mannequins and designing themed displays with outdoor banners became an essential marketing tool
and the creative people who designed those displays made up an entire department
Kaufmann’s “helped make Pittsburgh a big city
It was better and more complete than it needed to be,” said Michael Lisicky
a Baltimore-based author of seven books about various department stores
aspired to climb higher on social and economic ladders
“That’s why sales were so important
You could get that more expensive coat or dress
No one knew if you paid full retail or got it on an amazing closeout,” Mr
Called “E.J.,” he expanded the business in 1913
the year some of his cousins left the store because they were not offered an ownership interest
they established Kaufmann & Baer two blocks away in a terra-cotta covered building that later became Gimbels
competed with his cousins by hiring Benno Janssen
architect to Pittsburgh’s high society
to design a fancy addition that opened in 1914
had watched his father and uncles oversee the construction of the store
a visual lesson that showed him how architecture could be a powerful form of advertising
also strove to upgrade the quality of merchandise
he recalled working as a floor man in the toys and sporting goods section
“In those days we were the popular-priced store
It was Kaufmann’s that had the cheapest merchandise
It was Kaufmann’s that carried inferior and cheap brands,” he said
he transformed the Downtown store into a showcase of fine art
antiques and high-fashion clothing gathered from 27 buying offices the company maintained around the world
Kaufmann’s regularly sent buyers to Paris
A company newsletter called The Storagram noted a dizzying list of cities visited by the buyer M.E
E.J.commissioned Boardman Robinson in 1929 to create murals on the history of trade and installed the panels on the store’s first floor
black carrara-clad pillars and glass sconces lent the store an art deco elegance
Retailing experts and architecture critics called it the most beautiful store in the world
the store opened restaurants during the 1930s
Kaufmann’s casual Tic Toc Restaurant plus its more formal tea room with white tablecloths encouraged shoppers to spend a day Downtown
and author of “Service and Style: How the American Department Store Fashioned the Middle Class.’’
“The restaurants in department stores are the first things people mention
It might have been the first restaurant they went to
especially for children who would go there with family members around the holidays
It was a kind of formal occasion at which children were welcome
They had to be on their best behavior,” Ms
“People didn’t eat out as much in the middle of the 20th century
The food was good usually in those restaurants and presented very nicely with silver
It was not like eating at Woolworth’s lunch counter
which is where children otherwise might have been taken by their mothers,” Ms
who became Kaufmann’s chief art designer in 1935
she opened the Vendome Shops on Kaufmann’s 11th floor
The name was inspired by the Place Vendome in Paris
the location of the Ritz Hotel where she stayed on buying trips in the French capital
An Elizabeth Arden beauty salon that opened at Kaufmann’s drew additional customers
Kaufmann’s exhibited the memorable paintings of Aaron Gorson
who captured the city’s fiery steel mills at night
some of Gorson’s canvases are selling for $90,000 to $100,000
the store retained its reputation for quality fashion
department store to open an Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche boutique
Kaufmann’s Downtown operated for 144 years — a decade under the Macy’s flag — until shutting its doors in September 2015
Its run outlasted many other department stores in the nation
Kaufmann’s merged with May Department Stores Co
In 2005 Federated Department Stores bought May Co
lifelong Pittsburghers still called it Kaufmann’s even after its cluttered sales floors and spotty service made it unworthy of the name
Kaufmann took mistresses and fathered an illegitimate child
His wife Liliane died from an overdose of sleeping pills
Edgar Jonas Kaufmann was a charming man who led a charmed life
served as president of Kaufmann’s department store for 42 years
He was 20 when his family moved to a 22-room Squirrel Hill mansion with lawn tennis courts and a 250-capacity ballroom
this prosperous businessman became a major player in Pittsburgh’s first renaissance
He was among the founders of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development
a group of corporate executives that partnered with Mayor David Lawrence to clean up the city’s smoke-filled skies and create Mellon Square Park
A founder of the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera
gave $1 million toward construction of the Civic Arena
The silver-domed structure was built especially for the CLO performing arts group and opened in 1962
Best known for commissioning Frank Lloyd Wright to design Fallingwater in Fayette County
was an innovative retailer who used Kaufmann’s department store to exhibit the latest in fashion
first-rate art and well-designed modern furniture that is highly prized today
His drive to improve Pittsburgh and his interest in art
architecture and theater propelled him to the center of civic life
His politics made him a delegate to the 1952 Republican convention
He enjoyed major advantages over his father and three uncles
He met Pittsburgh’s elite while a student at Shady Side Academy and spent one year at Yale’s Sheffield School
“He was beloved,” said Barbara Burstin
author of “Steel City Jews in Prosperity
Depression and War.” “His cook loved him because he was such a generous man.”
told an interviewer: “I love my city
my country and my religion — in that order.”
He also favored eye-catching cars and beautiful women
When his dark eyes rested on his vivacious first cousin
the fact that she would inherit shares in Kaufmann’s from her father
He was 24 and she 20 when they wed in New York in 1909 because Pennsylvania prohibited marriage between first cousins
Lillian — now going by Liliane because she loved all things French — gave birth to their only child
and Liliane spent much of the 1920s living on seven wooded acres on Pasadena Drive in Fox Chapel
where they built an 18-room Norman-style chateau for $250,000
Named for the charming round tower at the home’s entrance
architect of Downtown’s now Omni William Penn Hotel
The couple brought iron worker Samuel Yellin to make all the decorative hardware in a forge he set up in the living room fireplace
The Kaufmanns rode horses regularly and their Fox Chapel stud raised steeplechase horses that competed nationally
Liliane bred long-haired dachshunds and kept six as pets
a cigarette later popularized in James Bond movies
the couple were listed in Pittsburgh’s Blue Book
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Wisconsin estate and school for organic architecture
Wright was a house guest at La Tourelle in 1934
where he discussed plans to build Fallingwater
arrived in Pittsburgh to attend a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
Einstein stayed with the Kaufmanns at La Tourelle
Not all of the publicity was positive; E.J.’s infidelity made headlines in 1933
sued him after he failed to pay for six platinum and diamond bracelets he had sent to his mistress Josephine Bennett Waxman
The scandal amused and shocked local newspaper readers
the Kaufmanns’ longtime cook who is now 102
told the authors of “The Fallingwater Cookbook” that E.J
“was the biggest playboy in Pittsburgh
let his wife handle the consequences of his extramarital affairs
Liliane invited the teen-aged Betty Jo to Fallingwater
according to the late department store heir Leon Harris in his book
“Merchant Princes.” Liliane also insisted that her husband set up a trust fund for the girl even though his liaison with Lois Harris
the child’s mother and a former Kaufmann's clothing model
Liliane showed her compassion in other ways as well
she oversaw Red Cross work rooms where surgical dressings were prepared
An ardent supporter of Montefiore Hospital
she was the only woman to serve as president of its board
lasted longer than that of any other board president at the Jewish hospital
when Pittsburgh hospitals were short of nurses
where the nursing school is named in her memory
She also volunteered at Mercy Hospital for a decade
Fallingwater was finished in 1937 and the couple retreated there on weekends to escape the heat and smoke of industrial Pittsburgh
Liliane enjoyed swimming in the nude and collecting modern art
Time magazine featured Frank Lloyd Wright on its cover in 1938
The department store was not always depicted favorably
a former Pennsylvania legislator who at the time represented the local Urban League
led a boycott of Downtown Pittsburgh stores because they wouldn’t hire black women as sales clerks
Kaufmann continued his civic leadership in the 1950s
he founded the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera
promoted its talent and for years covered its $50,000 annual operating losses
honors high school musical performance with the Gene Kelly Awards and invests in new works
The Kaufmanns’ public lives appeared glamorous partly because of the parade of celebrities who visited Fallingwater
Liliane suffered from depression and sought psychiatric help
she fell unconscious after taking an overdose of Seconal
The family received condolences in the couple’s William Penn Hotel suite
E.J.’s mistress and nurse at the time
but died seven months later in his sleep in April 1955
He was 69 and at his Palm Springs home in California
Kaufmann challenged her prenuptial agreement in court; she wound up with the California property and several hundred thousand dollars
was not interested in running a department store
He became a curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City
he left Fallingwater to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy
and Liliane rest at Fallingwater in a mausoleum covered by bronze doors created by sculptor Alberto Giacometti
Edgar Jr.’s ashes are scattered on the grounds of Fallingwater
Kaufmann commissioned renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design Fallingwater in 1935
The home is built over waterfalls on Bear Run in Fayette County
Their department store is shuttered and silent
but the Kaufmanns’ contributions are still visible when the Pittsburgh CLO performs
in public buildings such as Hill House Association and at the Jewish Community Centers in Squirrel Hill and Scott
Best known is the architectural jewel called Fallingwater in Fayette County
Besides E.J.’s key role in founding the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and Liliane’s leadership of Montefiore Hospital
another branch of the family invested heavily in promoting the health
education and welfare of Pittsburgh’s residents
Henry Kaufmann was the youngest and lived the longest; he died at age 94 in 1955
He is best remembered for giving away much of his $10 million fortune in Pittsburgh and New York
the fortune he acquired by selling his share in the department store would total more than $240 million
Isaac and Morris — generously supported Jewish charities and the wider community
But Pittsburgh newspaper pages are filled with images of Henry celebrating his July 12 birthday by making a major donation to a local charity
Known affectionately as “Uncle Henry,” he appears in photographs wearing a suit and tie
newspapers estimated he had given away $5.5 million
Beneath his earnest appearance lay lasting grief born of two devastating losses — his wife and daughter died young
Henry and Theresa Kaufmann’s only child
Newspapers reported that Irene reached for headache medicine and
Additional research suggests the death was more tragic
Dorothy Blumenthal's family knew the Kaufmanns and
in a 1980 interview with Pittsburgh historian Barbara Burstin
said Irene’s parents had forbidden their daughter from marrying the family chauffeur
many people took their lives by drinking carbolic acid because it was readily available and often caused an agonizing death in 10 minutes
Henry and Theresa gave $150,000 for construction of the Irene Kaufmann Settlement House on Centre Avenue in the Hill District
Begun in 1895 as the Columbian School and Settlement
The wide array of social services its staff offered improved the lives of more than 100,000 immigrants
Undernourished children were given milk while their mothers learned how to best care for infants and youngsters
musicals and efforts to grow prodigious gardens
Laurence Lubisch recalled joining the settlement house in 1925 and was still living when its direct nonprofit descendant
the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh
“I don’t think I’d be alive if it weren’t for a place like this,” Mr
Lubisch told the authors of a centennial booklet published in 1995
“There were times in my life when there was nothing to eat but onions and bread
And there were times when there were only onions ..
I used to fight to be first in line at the milk well.”
Henry sold his shares in the department store for $10 million to his brother
but traveled frequently to Europe and the German village where Henry had grown up
an account in The New York Times described Theresa as an invalid
she overheard her husband and doctors planning to have her treated at a psychiatric hospital
from the seventh floor of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York City
Henry coped with his wife’s suicide in part by making charitable donations
When the settlement house celebrated the 25th anniversary of its founding
he gave the settlement house his share of a Downtown Pittsburgh property valued at $750,000
Henry’s contributions were far-reaching
immigrated from Germany to America in 1922 because of Henry’s help
Alfred spent three years in California before moving to what was then called Palestine where Henry helped him finance the establishment of citrus groves
Henry established the Henry Kaufmann Foundation in 1929
the same year that launched the Great Depression
he gave $200,000 for construction of the Theresa L
Kaufmann Auditorium at the 92nd Street Y in New York City
plus funds for an auditorium with the same name at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement in Pittsburgh
settlement house leaders honored him for his generosity in financing the new addition that held the auditorium
More than 2,000 people attended and gave Henry an ovation
Henry’s generosity also endures in the Henry Kaufmann Camp Grounds in New York
the Henry Kaufmann Family Park consists of 100 acres in Monroeville and is run by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh
and designed to give poor children a chance to escape Pittsburgh’s filthy air and to experience nature
larger camp opened in Harmony in 1922 with a large athletic field for baseball
volleyball plus a campfire ring and seven natural caves
the camp moved to a 200-acre site on Lake Lynn near Morgantown
Jewish community leaders decided to merge the Young Men and Women’s Hebrew Association in Oakland
the Irene Kaufmann Settlement and the Emma Farm Association
The new organization was often called the Y-IKC and nicknamed the “Ikes.”
The direct descendant of these organizations is the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh

But look at these pictures: Don’t they make you wish your own dentist had better taste than a waiting room full of Thomas Kinkades
And don’t you think you’d hate going to the dentist a tad less if you didn’t have to sit in a barf-brown dental chair that squeaked every time you got probed
The office — called adorably, quaintly, the Dental INN — of course bills itself as much more than eye candy. The work of Mannheim, Germany-based Peter Stasek Architect, the whole concept is conceived as a ?therapy lounge.”
Sure, that sounds pretty absurd for a dental clinic; you half expect them to supplement your tooth implant with a mani-pedi. Except that dental fear is so astonishingly deep and pervasive — at least 5% of the U.S. population would rather suffer unspeakable pain than visit a dentist — that anything that can assuage patients’ anxieties sounds like a good idea to us
Stasek’s concept centers on the “healing effects of organic shapes and natural structures.” So you’ve got a curving reception island and glass walls overprinted in an image of the nearby Viernheim forest and a waiting room that would look right at home in the pages of Dwell (fireplace included)
All of this is supposed to put patients’ minds at ease
Perhaps so much so that they shell out for not just the implant but — hell
