along with innovative accommodation technology
will arrive in the Center for Student Success this academic year
The Center for Student Success offers students a range of academic support services and comprises Disability Resources
Each program area is led by staff who provide targeted programs
and events that support and empower students
the center hired two new staff members in Disability Resources
is working to implement new accommodation technology
and will launch a new peer leadership program
Eric Wagenfeld began his new role as the director of disability resources in July
With a long career in promoting education access
he most recently was a faculty member and worked in Disability Services at Ferris State University in Big Rapids
Wagenfeld sees great opportunities for improving access at Oberlin
but he wants to begin his appointment by directly interfacing with those on campus and learning about their needs.
“I want to begin by listening to students and faculty and really get to know Oberlin,” says Wagenfeld
his priorities include implementing a new piece of technology called Accessible Information Management (AIM)
This online tool will streamline the accommodation application process for students and take what’s been a paper-based
multi-step process and shift it to a secure electronic records management system
students will be able to apply online for accommodations
and send faculty their accommodation letters electronically
Wagenfeld says the new technology will be a boon for both students and faculty
The technology is slated for a full rollout later this year
Wagenfeld is committed to learning about current policies and other Disability Resources processes so he can improve institutional efficiency and better serve students and faculty
María Zoraida Maclay '17 will move from a part-time role into a full-time position as Disability Resources Coordinator
In addition to working with advising and assistive technologies
Maclay will provide administrative support to students who are participating in the pilot of a new peer leadership program through Disability Resources during the fall semester
students will have the opportunity to give feedback on how the peer program can best serve the campus
The new peer leadership program at Disability Resources is made possible through the generosity of former Oberlin parents Michael and Bettina Klein
in honor of their daughter Rebecca Klein who graduated in 2018 and was a student accessibility advocate
The college is closely monitoring developments in the outbreak of a new strain of coronavirus
Access frequently asked questions about coronavirus
the college will launch new software that will be used to communicate and manage connectivity with students
is a communication and relationship management tool that will improve the student experience with academic advising
and make communications between students and the college more efficient and effective
Oberlin has separate application processes for the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory of Music

PAUL — University of Minnesota Interim President Jeff Ettinger appeared before the Minnesota Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety Tuesday afternoon at the Minnesota Senate building in St
Along with negotiating with pro-Palestine protesters to stop its encampment
Ettinger admitted to signing an agreement that had a statement using a term allegedly "referencing Hamas’ foundational mission to exterminate Jews in Israel," although he admitted before the committee he hadn't realized what he had approved
Ettinger's appearance comes as state lawmakers grapple with understanding the institution’s increase in antisemitic incidents after the Oct
7 Hamas attack on Israel and the ensuing conflict overseas
Minnesota’s flagship university saw roughly 170 bias incident reports during the 2023-24 academic year
a stark increase from the 55 reports in 2022-23
roughly one-third involved antisemitic rhetoric while Islamophobia contributed to one-fifth of the reports

Specific topics included the university’s response to student protests
student negotiations and vandalism against Minnesota Hillel

expressed concerns about the precedent the university may have set for future student protests
showing disappointment in the university’s decision to drop criminal charges against the nine protesters arrested on April 23 for failing to abide by a dispersal order
“I’m particularly concerned that the lack of sanctions for those who violated the law could encourage future disruptions,” Latz said
this will only signal to future protesters that they can act with impunity
Ettinger said the university used its prosecutorial discretion to dismiss the criminal cases in an effort to balance its priorities — ensuring safety
and adhering to the law and university policies
He explained that if more students were arrested
it would have created a numbers game favoring the protesting students
police-heavy approach would have produced a different result
referencing the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s unsuccessful attempts where police intervention didn't end long-term demonstrations
these would need to be hands-on arrests with every arrest requiring two officers,” Ettinger said
“The officers need to leave the premises with the arrested person
You can quickly understand how soon you have a very diminished force.”

The university also agreed not to press criminal charges against anyone resulting from the protest’s encampment

The agreement with protesters included university officials facilitating conversations with career services to ban companies that do business with Israel from participating in gatherings like university career fairs and campus events and to provide details about the university's disclosures
University president admits he signed document with alleged "extermination of Jews" rhetoric in itWhen the university announced the agreement with the protesters
Latz said it included an Arabic term referencing “Hamas’ foundational mission to exterminate Jews in Israel.” Ettinger accepted responsibility for "the mistake," saying he didn’t know what the word meant and that the communication was drafted to meet students’ needs in a late-night frenzy
we ended up finalizing that document at 5 a.m.,” said Ettinger

Minnesota’s state legislature is not currently in session
and no official action can be taken based on Tuesday’s findings until it reconvenes in January
Despite increased biased incident statistics
one member of the university’s Jewish community
said in his testimony that he didn’t experience antisemitic sentiments firsthand
“There’s been an effort to suppress people like me into acting as though all Jewish students experience the same thing
and that all Jewish students are opposed to the protests and all the protesters are opposed to the Jewish students,” Wagenfeld said
“I think that does a huge disservice to both Jewish and Israeli people.”

Seasoned and respected women sailors are among those so far signed up to compete in the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s (ORCV) 50th Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race – or ‘The Westcoaster’
as it is simply known to most – which starts at midday on 27 December
Clare Olding turns 22 this month and is currently the youngest skipper in the race
she will share helming responsibilities with her dad Tim
has also skippered the yacht twice in the Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta for female sailors only
but I’ve only been racing with him for the last four years
He’s given me the opportunity and encouraged me all the way
even loaning the boat to us for us for the Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta,” says Olding
who has over 5,000 nautical miles behind her
The Victorian sailor says her love of ocean racing comes from
“A million different unknown variables and watching crew to work under those variables
It’s awesome to see people deal with difficult situations and see them come out the other end in good shape.”
She would love to see an increase in younger women racing offshore: “It makes you realise how competent you are
problem solving and an appreciation for where you are
You see dolphins and whales and it all sticks with you
Vertigo won the ORCV’s Launceston to Hobart (2019)
She also won the ORCV’s 2021 Melbourne to Devonport ‘Rudder Cup’
Australia’s oldest ocean race and the fifth oldest organised ocean yacht race in the world
The Oldings are aiming for a hat trick with the 50th Westcoaster
that we’ve done the training required and are ocean ready,” says Olding
who will be joined by “at least five other women
Northern NSW yachtswoman Annette Hesselmans will skipper her yacht
Joining her on the Najad 1490 design are her partner Gerry Snijders
their 24-year-old daughter Sophie Snijders
Annette’s older sister Mary-Jane Wagenfeld and Sophie’s boyfriend
Also aboard is Annette’s friend and experienced inshore and offshore sailor
whom she met through the two’s shared experience of the 5500 nautical mile Melbourne to Osaka Double-Handed Yacht Race on separate boats
“We were blown away that Sophie is joining us with her partner
We didn’t set out to have more women than men
We have a range of really experienced to novice sailors that will hopefully complement each other,” admits Hesselmans
Hesselmans competed double-handed on her then yacht
including daughter Sophie and Sue Bumstead
“Sophie was my incredibly competent crew sailing home from the 2018 Melbourne Osaka (Hesselmans and her partner finished seventh over the line and fifth in PHS) and in the Westcoaster
Sophie introduced her partner to sailing on her Duncanson 34
They’re currently cruising in the Northern Territory
“My sister is fairly new to the concept of ocean racing
She did Bass Strait with me in February but otherwise sailed a dinghy in her teens.”
Hesselmans has switched gears and now runs ‘Paper Sailors Rock’
providing sailing adventures and sail training RYA courses via FIKA
“My goal is to make sailing inclusive for all
Being a female skipper is my passion though
so I like to encourage more women onto the water and to develop confidence
I’m in the process of becoming RYA accredited so that I can offer a range of sailing courses.”
FIKA’s owner says she has reasons for participating in the 50th Melbourne to Hobart with family and friends: “The camaraderie
festivities and of course celebrating the 50th and being part of such an iconic race.”
There are many other women also taking part in the race across those yachts already entered
The 435 nautical mile Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race
organised by ORCV with the cooperating of the Derwent Sailing Squadron
starts off Portsea Pier at 12pm on 27 December

sits next to a modern replica in Germany's Bundeskunsthalle museum last year (Credit: Oliver Berg/DPA/Alamy)William Cook takes a look at the school which survived persecution again and again to influence the design of living today
Germany’s Bauhaus Archiv is throwing a farewell party
Next year this museum will close for renovation
and until then it’s presenting a display of ‘greatest hits’ from the world’s biggest Bauhaus collection
From furniture and posters to crockery and cutlery
these exquisite objects show how the Bauhaus school shaped our idea of good design
the word Bauhaus conjures up a certain type of modern architecture – that stark aesthetic that spawned a million tower blocks
But the Bauhaus was much more than an architectural style – it was a new way of thinking
its ideas still set the pattern for the way we live today
The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 in the German city of Weimar
by a Prussian architect called Walter Gropius
students here were taught to look at the world around them in an entirely different way
There is no essential difference between the artist and the craftsman – Walter GropiusBauhaus means ‘building house’ but Gropius didn’t want to build only houses
He wanted to create a new breed of artists
Traditional art schools were conservative and elitist
Technical colleges were dreary and conventional
Gropius broke down the barrier between fine art and applied arts
“There is no essential difference between the artist and the craftsman,” he said
“An object is defined by its nature,” announced Gropius
“In order to design it to function properly
it must fulfil its function in a practical way.” Instead of sitting in stuffy classrooms listening to lectures
The Bauhaus produced an incredible array of artefacts
all distinguished by their functional and elegant construction
their streamlined appearance was revolutionary
“Bauhaus workshops are laboratories in which prototypes of products suitable for mass production are carefully developed and continually improved,” declared Gropius
the Bauhaus will train and educate a new type of worker for craft and industry
who has an equal command of both technology and form.”
An object is defined by its nature – Walter GropiusNot everyone shared his vision
the liberals who had supported the Bauhaus were defeated
and the new conservative government cut off the school’s funding
the word about the Bauhaus had spread way beyond Weimar
The local government commissioned a spectacular new building
Gropius left in 1928 to resume his career as an architect
Bauhaus wallpaper became the school’s bestselling product
here was an art school which could actually pay its way
In 1930 Dessau’s city council dismissed Meyer on account of his “communist tendencies,” and in 1931 the Nazis won the local elections
having promised to close the Bauhaus (they called it “cultural bolshevism”)
Thankfully Gropius’s building survived and still stands there today
but the students and teachers were forced to flee
They found a new home in an old factory in Berlin
Why did the Nazis feel so threatened by the Bauhaus
Why were they so scared of an art school that made modernist furniture and kitchenware
Because it represented a world view which was the complete opposite of National Socialism
The Bauhaus was cosmopolitan and avant-garde
Its international ethos made a mockery of Hitler’s racist fantasies
the persecution of the Bauhaus by the Nazis was a (very) backhanded compliment
it was this persecution of the Bauhaus which ensured its survival
Gropius and Mies van der Rohe went to America
where they were joined by Bauhaus teachers such as Josef Albers
Moholy-Nagy founded the ‘New Bauhaus’ in Chicago
New York’s Museum of Modern Art staged a blockbuster Bauhaus exhibition
The true measure of its immense influence is how familiar it has becomeBut what exactly is Bauhaus style
‘Less is More,’ is a good place to start (‘chuck out the chintz’ is just as good)
Each element is stripped down to its bare essentials
Yet the true measure of its immense influence is how familiar it has become
Wandering around the Bauhaus Archiv (a futuristic building designed by Gropius
and eventually built after his death) the exhibits here seem so contemporary
It’s only when you read the labels that you realise they are nearly a hundred years old
Once a radical revolt against the status quo
it has disappeared - into the décor of our daily lives
Bauhaus in Motion is at the Bauhaus Archiv, Berlin until 8 January 2018
New Bauhaus Chicago: Experiment Photography is at the Bauhaus Archiv from 15 November 2017 to 5 March 2018

2019 marks a century since the opening of a visionary project - a new school of art, architecture and design. Germany lay in ruins, traumatised by years of war, and it was out of this landscape that the Bauhaus emerged. It was the brainchild of Walter Gropius, a German architect returning to his career after serving on the front lines in WW1.
The Bauhaus existed for just 14 years, before it closed for good in 1933, collateral damage in the Nazi purge of institutions seen as intellectual or bourgeois.
Scott Wales travels to Germany to find out why the Bauhaus remains a key foundation of the Modernist movement, with an enduring international legacy.
