David Waldeck received the 2025 Award in Experimental Physical Chemistry from the American Chemical Society
Waldeck is a distinguished professor of chemistry and academic director of the Petersen Institute of Nanoscience and Engineering at Pitt
His research program uses methods of spectroscopy
electrochemistry and microscopy to investigate primary processes in the condensed phase and in nanoscale assemblies
He and his research group are being recognized for their outstanding contributions to our understanding of electron transfer and the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect
Although the fact that electrons’ carry charge is widely known
they also act like spinning tops that have magnetic moments
Waldeck’s team is exploring how to quantify the spin selectivity more precisely and how CISS might be used to improve the selectivity and efficiency of redox reactions

Ohio — As new homes and major companies get built throughout central Ohio
there’s a new trend in many cities to create more green space in highly developed areas.
They’re calling them “pocket parks,” and their goal is to give people more space to gather.
A new pocket park along Waldeck Avenue has been built in University District near Ohio State to create more green space in a highly developed part of town
Nora Gerber is the executive director of the University District Organization
She was the one who presented the idea to transform the space
He’s the pastor of the church that sits on the property
“We noticed that this was one of the few green spaces in the area,” Porch said
“I reached out to Nora about planning a park
I’m actually on my way to a meeting to talk about green spaces in the university districts.’ That initial phone call was like
Gerber said the need for green space has never been so great
And green spaces are a high commodity,” she said
if you don’t have the space to gather with your neighbors and community members
then how are you going to increase that sense of belonging?”
Gerber said she’s excited to see people enjoying the space
“It's all definitely rooted in community,” she said
“We hope that you can see it and feel it when you're here.”
The #13 Pepperdine women's soccer team remains perfect in conference play with a 4-3 win over WCC champion Gonzaga Saturday night
Game Recap: Women's Soccer | 10/5/2024 9:55:00 PM | by Pepperdine Athletics
Revenge is best served on the opponent's home field
After a crushing 2-1 loss for the WCC Championship title at Tari Frahm Rokus Field
seeing five goals between the teams for Pepperdine to beat Gonzaga (5-6-1) to avenge the tail end of the 2023 season
The Waves have a habit of striking early, and today was no different. For her first of the day, graduate Tori Waldeck (Newhall, Calif.) was served a nice ball to the center of the box by freshman Elle Quinn (Folsom
Calif.) and snuck it past the goalie on the left-hand side to give Pepperdine a 1-0 lead
The freshie finds the super senior ! #WavesUp pic.twitter.com/zZPaR2w4uu
The first 15 minutes of the second half was a matter of finding footing for both sides as the score remained constant
The Bulldogs would take the lead in the 60th minute and the Waves found themselves with 30 minutes to find an answer
Pepperdine would do more than find an equalizer. With three goals in seven minutes, the Waves made a statement. Waldeck got her second of the night thanks to a deflected shot by redshirt junior Tabitha LaParl (Lakewood
The ball landed perfectly at Waldeck's feet and she would execute for the second tie of the match
This is Quinn's second start with the Waves
but she is making her presence known early with two assists on the night
Waldeck becomes just the seventh Wave in history to score a hat trick
getting an unassisted goal from a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie
She is the first to accomplish such a feat since 2017 when Bri Visalli scored three against Gonzaga
The Bulldogs would get one more to narrow the gap
but ran out of time for any chance at an equalizer
#13 Pepperdine won after a flurry of second-half goals with a final score of 4-3
11' : Waldeck's first goal of the night off the foot of Quinn
perfectly place in the middle of the box outside the six
18' : Gonzaga responded immediately with a goal from Paige Alexander
60' : Alexander got a brace on the night to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead
66' : Waldeck's second of the night comes off a defensive rebound
sparked by LaParl's initial shot into the box
71' : Wynalda finishes a beautiful sequence of passes by sliding the ball past the goalie's legs and into the net for the lead
73' : Waldeck finishes her night with a hat trick after a defensive mistake allows her to take on the goalie one-on-one
79' : Chelsea Le gets Gonzaga's third goal of the night to attempt a comeback
Saves: Jillian Medvecky (Pepperdine) 1
The Waves are back home to host the #10 Santa Clara Broncos. It is the mental health awareness game as well as a cowboy hat giveaway for the first 50 students in attendance. Tickets can be purchased here

Recent research from Professor of Chemistry David Waldeck in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and Dietrich School Research Associate Brian Bloom opens new possibilities in the field of “spintronics,” which aims to produce devices that harness the spin of electrons rather than their charge
“One of the goals in spintronics is to move spin information through a material without also having to move the associated charge
because moving the charge takes more energy — it’s why your phone and computer get hot when you use them for a long time,” Waldeck told North Carolina State University
By moving spin current through two cobalt oxide thin films — materials that have a “handedness” such that they’re different from their mirror image — the team discovered that spin only passes through the material in specific orientations. They published their work along with colleagues at NC State in the journal Science Advances on May 3
The results highlight the possibility of creating gateways in these materials through which spin can pass in only one direction
a property that could find use in new approaches to data storage

University entry represents a period of significant change for students
The extent to which students are able to effectively navigate this change (e.g.
via their personal adaptability and social support) will likely impact upon their psychological wellbeing (a finding corroborated by recent studies)
no study to date has examined these relations among overseas
who represent an increasing proportion of university students in the UK and where the degree of change
325 Chinese international (overseas) students at UK universities
were surveyed for their adaptability and social support as well as their psychological wellbeing outcomes (e.g.
A series of moderated regression analyses revealed that adaptability and social support operate largely as independent predictors of psychological wellbeing (all outcomes)
social support was found to moderate the association between adaptability and two of the psychological wellbeing outcomes: life satisfaction and psychological distress
These findings have important implications for educators and researchers
who are seeking to support the transition of international (overseas) students to university and optimize their experience
These adaptive dimensions are important for the maintenance of a positive relationship between oneself and one's (educational) environment
that social support moderated this relationship (we elaborate on this in a later section)
there is evidence that adaptability is associated with psychological wellbeing in different countries; although
this research has not explored these relations among international
There is therefore a need to further examine the independent (and interaction) effects of adaptability and social support on psychological wellbeing
particularly among international (overseas) students
who may experience a more significant change relative to domestic students
The present study examines the relationship between adaptability
and psychological wellbeing among Chinese international students at UK universities
The findings may have important implications for educators and researchers
the current study addressed two major questions:
Do adaptability and social support contribute significantly
to psychological wellbeing outcomes among Chinese international students studying in the UK
Is there an interaction effect between adaptability and social support on psychological wellbeing outcomes among Chinese international students studying in the UK; specifically
A sample of Chinese international (overseas) students (N = 325) were recruited from several higher education institutions (universities) in the UK
Students were enrolled on various programmes
although approximately half were studying for a psychology-related degree (an anticipated result given the researcher's connections)
Most of the sample were female (N = 169; 52%) and in their early twenties (M = 22.59
and self-selective sampling approaches were used to recruit participants
The selection criteria were not limited to any particular ability group; all eligible students (Chinese and currently studying in UK higher education institutions) were invited to participate in this research
All students completed an online questionnaire to ascertain demographic details and to measure the core constructs in this study (i.e.
The research was carried out in adherence with the British Psychological Society's Code of Ethics and Conduct
Cronbach's alpha in the present study was.91
Cronbach's alpha in the present study was 0.93
we include three measures of psychological wellbeing: Flourishing; Distress; and Life Satisfaction
Cronbach's alpha in the present study was 0.92
Cronbach's alpha in the present study was 0.91
The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS; Diener et al., 1985) was used to measure students' general level of satisfaction with their lives. The scale comprises five items (e.g., “I am satisfied with my life”) using a 7-point Likert scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 7 (strongly agree). Prior measurement work has demonstrated the reliability and validity of the scale (see Pavot et al., 1991)
Cronbach's alpha in the present study was 0.83
Means, standard deviations, and bivariate correlations among the key variables are presented in Table 1
adaptability and perceived social support were significantly positively associated with flourishing and life satisfaction
both adaptability and perceived social support were significantly negative associated with psychological distress
Mann-Whitney U tests revealed no significant differences in wellbeing (U = 12,907.5
or life satisfaction scores by sex (U = 14,054
and correlations between key variables (N = 325)
It was found that there was a significant positive relationship between adaptability (β =0.52
and perceived social support (β = 0.39
there was no interaction effect observed (β = 0.00
The variance explained by the predictors was 55%
It was found that there was a significant negative relationship between adaptability (β = −0.26
and perceived social support (β = −0.29
The variance explained by the predictors was 18%
A significant interaction effect was also observed (β = −0.11
95% CI = [−0.00,0.00]) although the effect size of this interaction was very weak in magnitude (Cohen's f2 = 0.01)
A simple slopes analysis was then conducted at both high (+1SD) and low (−1SD) mean levels of perceived social support
Analyses revealed that at high levels of perceived social support there was a stronger negative relationship between adaptability and distress (β = −0.28
−0.15]) in comparison to when perceived social support was lower (β = −0.14
It was found that there was a significant positive relationship between adaptability (β = 0.39
and perceived social support (β = 0.29
The variance explained by the predictors was 28.8%
A significant interaction effect was also observed (β = 0.12
0.00]) although the effect size of this interaction was very weak in magnitude (Cohen's f2 =0.01)
Analyses revealed that at high levels of perceived social support there was a stronger positive relationship between adaptability and life satisfaction (β = 0.31
0.44]) in comparison to when perceived social support was lower (β = 0.20
social support) resources are useful in protecting oneself against current and future stress
individuals with more (higher) resources may have a greater capacity to manage and cope with stress and have greater psychological wellbeing outcomes
it may be that social support can be more beneficial and aid adaption to situations of novelty and change for Chinese rather than UK samples
that the magnitude of the moderation effects observed in the present study were very small (trivial)
these beneficial effects are unlikely to be observed in “real life”
We suggest future researchers more closely examine how and why social support may be a moderator for specific populations (e.g.
Chinese) using more qualitative designs and perhaps experience sampling methodology
There are some limitations of this study that need to be addressed to interpret the findings
the study focused solely on Chinese international students studying in the UK
Further research is needed with more powerful and diverse samples
to examine the extent to which these findings apply to other types of international students (i.e.
not just Chinese students) studying in different institutions and countries (beyond the UK)
since the research was conducted using a quantitative approach
the interpretation of the results is somewhat limited
and the nuances associated with students' lived experience are not represented
Future research adopting more qualitative approaches
may be fruitful for understanding the experience of transitioning to an overseas university and uncovering the dynamics of adaptability
the current research focused on some of the individual-level variables
other factors might be related to Chinese international students' psychological functioning e.g.
other variables not included in this study might have been assessed for and statistically controlled
it is not possible to establish cause-effect relations (these can only be conceptually inferred)
The present study showed that Chinese international students' adaptability and social support could make a unique contribution to their psychological wellbeing in the form of flourishing
Social support was also found to moderate the association between adaptability and two of the psychological wellbeing outcomes: life satisfaction and psychological distress
the moderation effect was very weak in magnitude
these findings have important implications for educators and researchers

Adam Waldeck faced a challenging renewal this year
industrial and office spaces worth about $90 million — or so they thought
Updated valuations showed the properties were actually worth much more
the properties had collectively suffered more than $2 million in wind
hail and freeze losses over the previous few years
engaging the executive team months before renewal to arrive at an accurate valuation
determine acceptable deductible levels and work with carriers to build a competitive program
ultimately achieving a flat rate renewal and fully insured properties
“Adam came up with a solution for our property and casualty placement that allowed us to take advantage of certain geographical concentrations related to others from the standpoint that certain locations had named storm exposure
Having a creative solution to how the different towers were structured with different carriers allowed for advantageous pricing,” one client said
Adam continues to find solutions to help us deliver the insurance product to our clients for a competitive price
His ability to research alternative solutions when the market has swings has been exactly what we need
this is the highest praise a broker in his position could ask for.”

Cyber risk remains a top exposure for companies of every shape and size
the opportunities for system failure continue to multiply
Though coverage terminology is shifting to adapt to evolving threats
capacity remains plentiful as insurers and brokers work to meet the needs of their clients
Here are the key trends shaping the cyber landscape today
and how businesses and their insurers can work together to mitigate the risks:
“Ransomware and business email compromise remain significant threats
The increased utilization of technology in our world
particularly with the hybrid working model and the reliance on cloud sharing
presents potential weaknesses if cybersecurity measures are not robust enough,” said Siobhan O’Brien
According to the Cyber Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)
90% of successful ransomware attacks in the US start with a phishing attack
These attacks open the door for bad actors to plant malware within a targeted organization’s system
Not all companies have the financial resilience to survive the downtime
and reputational damage resulting from such an attack
Employee training is critical to mitigate this risk
Employees should not only be able to recognize the characteristics of a fraudulent email
but also appreciate their role in protecting their company as a whole
“Taking the time to train employees is vital because phishing scams can harm individuals and companies in many ways
Phishing training emails and videos may seem simple
but they highlight the importance of being vigilant
Employees must understand the implications of clicking on malicious links to prevent harm to the company and ensure its survival,” O’Brien said
Increasing interconnectivity and reliance on cloud services mean that an outage can disrupt millions of businesses
The CrowdStrike outage of 2024 exemplifies this
A flawed software update caused a system failure that affected Windows users around the world
financial services to emergency services and more
Disruptions like this have the potential to bring the global economy to a halt
Cyber policies are not consistent in how they respond to these unintentional failures
“The biggest headline event in the cyber world last year was a non-malicious event
which some risk models didn’t anticipate
Some policies have responded positively to such incidents
Purchasers of cyber insurance will likely seek clarification on the intent of policies to cover non-malicious events without limitations,” O’Brien said
this underscores the importance of keeping technology systems up to date and having backup processes in place
but it also highlights the unpredictability of cyber risk
brokers and clients will have to work closely together to identify vulnerabilities
and clarify coverage terms and conditions so everyone understands the potential impact of an outage
Emerging capabilities of artificial intelligence have both positive and negative potential for insurers and insureds alike
“AI can be very positive from a cybersecurity perspective
enabling better protection through enhanced threat detection and rapid response
allowing for an increased frequency of attacks on companies
New technologies often come with both benefits and challenges
so it is important to find the right balance,” O’Brien said
Companies can employ AI to streamline processes
But AI platforms also represent another potential entry point for cyber criminals
Perpetrators can also utilize AI themselves to commit fraud
leveraging “deepfake” technology to execute social engineering schemes
There are also broader questions around liability when it comes to decisions made based on AI-driven algorithms
many questions remain around the utility of AI platforms and how best to keep them secure
Insurers and insureds will have to grapple with these questions together as the technology continues to evolve
“We must continually work with partners to assess the current and future risk landscape
The past is not always a predictor of the future in cyber
as it’s a unique universe with different needs compared to property or casualty insurance,” O’Brien said
The US cyber insurance market is currently robust
with plenty of capacity available for both primary and excess positions
The number of cyber insurance policies being purchased is increasing year over year
as reported by the 2024 NAIC Report on the Cyber Insurance Market
“According to recent reports from global insurance and reinsurance brokers
the cyber market experienced single-digit decreases in pricing in Q4 in the US,” O’Brien said
with insurers seeking clients who have strong cybersecurity measures in place
regular updates to software thorough employee training
“Insurers want to understand the security posture of the company
their actual utilization of multifactor authentication
strength of the firewalls and ultimately their capability to recover from an incident,” O’Brien said
“We want to know that the risks being brought to us are well managed
and well protected,” O’Brien said
where the client is seeking an insurer who can bring their expertise in cyber protection and ultimately bring partnership in managing the claims handling process
clients want to know that their insurer is there
partnering with them and providing the necessary support through a combination of their in-house capabilities and trusted vendors.”
As a new entrant in the cyber insurance market
MSIG USA has the advantage of a fresh perspective without any legacy issues
“While we have the robust infrastructure and financial strength of a 350-year-old company behind us
our team is equipped with the expertise and capabilities to innovate and respond to clients’ cyber needs,” O’Brien said
This supports the type of collaborative partnership that will be necessary to address cyber risk exposures for years to come
we are assembling a team with deep expertise and a holistic view of our clients’ risks across all lines of insurance
to enhance the capabilities of our in-house claims team
we are partnering with vendors who can help us respond rapidly and diligently to get our clients back up and running,” O’Brien said
And then there is the sheer scope of MSIG USA’s reach
MSIG USA currently serves approximately 40+ regions and countries around the globe
“MSIG USA is uniquely positioned to provide comprehensive strategies that protect clients and help them achieve their goals in today’s technology-driven world
Our aim is to enter the market in the mid-excess capacity but with a view to developing a primary product offering bringing innovation to our products based on client needs,” O’Brien said

earned a $7.5 million Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) from the U.S
MURI funds teams from across universities investigating high priority topics and opportunities that intersect more than one traditional technical discipline
Waldeck will lead researchers from seven universities
Duke University and the University of Southern California
to develop the understanding of the interaction between electron spin and chiral matter
In 1999, Waldeck — along with Ron Naaman and others at the Weizmann Institute of Science — first reported a strong spin-filtering of electrons by chiral molecules, called Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS)
The MURI researchers aim to develop a fundamental quantum mechanical description for CISS and to explore and demonstrate its use for communicating spin information over long distances
its application for affecting chemical reactions and its manifestations in redox biology

Maddie Waldeck’s family has been entwined with the city of Kansas City
Her grandfather was an assistant fire chief and her dad spent 35 years at the Board of Public Utilities
Both of her brothers work for the city and her sister-in-law is a deputy police chief.
So when Waldeck got a job at the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City
“There was no other place that I wanted to work other than there,” Waldeck said
a high-ranking official who has worked for the government for 21 years
no longer works for the Unified Government
Waldeck was chatting with a few co-workers
‘My trick is whenever you ask somebody to do something for you
you should put your hand over your heart,’” she said
That’s when General Services Director Dennis “Tib” Laughlin allegedly walked up
grabbed her by the shirt and slammed her against a wall
‘This is how I put a hand over a heart,’” Waldeck said
“That’s something I’ll never forget,” she said
Laughlin has been charged with battery over the incident
Two eyewitnesses declined to talk on the record because of Laughlin's criminal trial
which starts today in Wyandotte County District Court.

the Unified Government said the alleged incident was investigated by the Human Resources Department and appropriate action was taken
although it didn’t elaborate because it said it was a confidential personnel matter
the May incident may not have been an isolated one
Waldeck called the two years she worked with Laughlin the “most stressful and heartbreaking” of her professional life
She started documenting every encounter that made her uncomfortable after the 2016 State of the Government address
and asked if she’d heard the rumor they were sleeping together
At the time, Waldeck was deputy treasurer for the UG, and Laughlin had just invited her to co-chair a new government-wide initiative called SOAR
The initiative was meant to tackle issues like vacant and poorly maintained properties
in part by improving government communication with residents
she took a job as delinquent real estate division manager under Laughlin
“He was somebody I knew held the key to my dream,” Waldeck said
“So when he would say things to me that were inappropriate in my mind
like comments about his sexual or romantic relationships or about how she looked
Waldeck wasn't the only one who felt uncomfortable
Bloomberg Philanthropies filed a complaint to the UG about Laughlin’s conduct during a conference for What Works Cities in New York City in March 2017
according to an email between Waldeck and a county administrator
Waldeck said Laughlin hit her on the arm during a work trip to Nebraska
you spend 10 minutes with him and you'll understand
but it's at the expense of the people that work for him.”
“It’s not something hidden,” said a UG employee
who requested anonymity because she fears losing her job
“You know when you have something that just bristles up on the back of your neck
It’s not just that [Laughlin] makes sexual connotations about women in general
There's just always something inappropriate.”
said she was “warned early on not to spend any time alone with him.”
‘Watch what he says and watch where you are with him,’” she said
said when she first got the job working directly under Laughlin
people in the community told them their daughter “needs to be careful.”
Waldeck said she documented meetings she called to raise concerns with the UG about Laughlin’s behavior
we have some issues,” she remembers telling a county administrator once
“I'm trusting you to take care of that.”
It was after she told her staff she was resigning that Laughlin allegedly slammed her against a wall
That’s when she said the UG really dropped the ball.
After she reported the incident internally
and now you're denying me the one thing that I've asked for
which is the opportunity to walk out of there with my head held high,” she said
said when sexual harassment in the workplace isn’t properly addressed
“That can create a real spiral in terms of folks feeling that this individual is untouchable
that it does not do any good to complain about these kinds of issues,” Jones said
Waldeck felt that’s what happened at the UG
whom she contacted after every incident and every meeting she had with an HR or a county administrator
said the UG created a culture where people are allowed to behave however they want
A “good ol’ boys club,” she called it.
Waldeck said she got calls and texts from staff complaining or expressing concerns about Laughlin.
An anonymous letter sent to KCUR — signed “Sad and Scared in Wyandotte” — said people are “very scared to work with Tib.”
Living in and working for Wyandotte County was something that made Waldeck proud
She remembers telling Laughlin about it in her first interview with him.
“He calls people that are from here ‘Dumb Dottes.’ That was really hard to hear.”
Waldeck has since taken a job in Johnson County
her dad called to check on her during a storm
you should just come on home,’” Waldeck said
And I don't know if I could ever do that now.”
“They will never fully understand what they took from me,” Waldeck said
