Finding ways for Ukraine to rebuild using its own resources is a good thing But Trump needs to beware of the minerals trap—the costly no-holds-barred pursuit of rare-earth minerals that sometimes gets great powers into trouble strategically Instead of obsessing over getting repaid by Ukraine security interests in view and carefully weigh the costs and benefits of pursuing Ukrainian minerals There are a lot of unknowns about Ukrainian minerals mining companies should be leery about making costly long-term investments in the eastern Donbas region the more security it creates for the Ukrainian people.” This is wishful thinking. Aside from ethical questions about using U.S. miners and engineers as a security measure, deterrence doesn’t really work this way. History shows that autocratic states like Russia are only deterred by a strong counterforce from a rival that balances it and threatens its survival Trump, ever the deal-maker, should spot a bad one for what it is. Moral hazard tends to emerge when a great power makes a robust security pledge to a revisionist ally meaning a state that is desperate to fix its security problems and/or alter the prevailing security order Protection by the great power shields the ally from the consequences of its actions making it more risk-acceptant and less responsive to the great power’s demands On the hook to bail out the ally when trouble comes the great power finds that its security costs rise to unsustainable levels Israel is telling Washington that the war in Gaza will end “on our terms and timeline power from Chinese attacks for more than seven decades The same would go for Israel in the Middle East Israel will need to take diplomacy more seriously giving Trump more leverage to de-escalate conflict and shift attention away from the Middle East C. potential for missing a meetup was something Walldorf worried about.  “At first I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to follow through,” Walldorf admitted “but that was something that Madison House or just watching TV “Chad helped me with a science project,” Malnowski recalled Walldorf went to a few of Malnowski’s first basketball games “It was huge to have that support,” Malnowski said You were al-Qaida and Islamic State In a brazen (and potentially dangerous) affront to the United States the Nigerien government has elected to house newly arrived Russian troops on a base currently occupied by U.S defense officials are calling this “a devastating blow” to U.S security in a region “at the tipping point of being captured by the Russian Federation.” This panicked reaction makes sense given the assumptions in U.S policy circles that terrorist threats in West Africa are a major threat to the U.S and that our so-called “loss” in Niger is Russia’s automatic gain The problem is these assumptions are wrong Drawing down from Niger isn’t some kind of strategic disaster it’s an overdue move that secures the safety of U.S troops and should be the basis for reconsidering U.S departure also won’t lead to the Russian “takeover of Central Africa” some predict but turn into a major bust for Moscow instead Research shows there basically is no threat to U.S security from African terrorist groups today groups like Jama’at Nusra al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and ISIS-West Africa Province (ISWAP) that U.S forces have been fighting from its bases in Niger aren’t global jihadis but are instead local insurgencies Along with just about every other terrorist group in Africa they have never attempted to directly attack the United States or European nations Affiliation by African terror groups to ISIS or al-Qaida is all about local objectives too — to raise their profile and money not plan attacks against the West that they have no capability to carry out forces based in Africa (roughly 6,500 across 29 bases/outposts) are not countering threats to U.S but instead propping up various African regimes against these local insurgencies troops are basically in the middle of someone else’s civil war — countering threats that present no great danger to the U.S. Violence has skyrocketed there since a military coup last July forces were mostly confined to a base at Agadez the Nigerien junta cut off air-transport to the base It blocked replacement troops from getting in too Anti-Americanism fanned by the regime also led to recent protests against the U.S troops have focused solely on force protection meaning their primary mission has been to simply stay alive forces are based precariously close to Russian troops — yet another insult from the Nigerien regime that puts U.S All that adds up to one simple conclusion: getting U.S troops out of Niger is the right call by a long shot Another Black Hawk Down incident was just around the corner it’s time to leave other regional conflict zones too is now complying with a request from the government of Chad to withdraw the small contingent of forces it had there a large contingent of African Union forces are withdrawing next year military personnel highly exposed to potential attack from al-Shabab — another group “predominantly interested in the nationalist battle against the Somali government,” not global jihad forces and switch to a political solution in Somalia Moving troops out of African conflict zones shouldn’t mean abandoning counterterrorism altogether in Africa Washington probably should negotiate to keep a base in a stable country in each region marked by terrorism — West East and North Africa — to monitor groups and conduct strikes against potential global-reach threats Aren’t its gains in Africa losses for the U.S. Russia gets more access to natural resources and minerals through its engagement in Africa — that’s a gain it’s hard to see how those kinds of gains coupled with the small Russian troop deployments (e.g. only 100 in Niger) presage a “takeover,” as U.S Russia will also find itself where the U.S with West African nations asking them to leave too Because Russia brings nothing new to counterterrorism in Africa It’s doubling down on the same force-first strategy used by the United States to this point violent extremism has increased at a staggering rate since U.S That trend has accelerated since Russian forces arrived Despite the presence of Wagner forces in Mali violence against civilians there increased by nearly 40% last year If that is what building influence looks like as the United States knows from its own experience departure from Niger is painful for the U.S policymakers can seize that opportunity and move to less force-based approaches better-suited for U.S is Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Wake Forest University and a Visiting Fellow at Defense Priorities Nathan and Eda Walldorf have been investing in real estate in the Chattanooga area for over 10 years.  They saw real estate investing as part of their retirement plan.  Then the Walldorfs learned that they could scale up and invest in apartment buildings with groups of investors.  From there Walldorf Capital Ventures LLC was born.  The Walldorfs have invested a great amount of time and money training under renowned multifamily apartment veterans and mentors and networking with other investors nationwide in order to become experts in apartment investing.    In their vision for Walldorf Capital Ventures “We saw an opportunity to offer investors exponential investment growth and creating generational wealth through multifamily investing.  We also saw an opportunity to help people leverage their time and money via a real/tangible and appreciating asset This is an investment class usually reserved for insurance companies and corporations there’s a lot of opportunity for our clients to reap the benefits and double their initial investments via the growth in value of these assets.”   The Walldorfs also see apartment investing as a hedge against inflation in the current market “You have few options nowadays when it comes to protecting your wealth. You can leave your funds in the bank or in the stock market and thanks to inflation and fluctuating markets you can expect them to devalue and/or depreciate by as much as 9 percent -and rising by investing in one of the safest asset classes out there with projected returns ranging from 4-6 percent average annualized which allows one to double the total initial investment once the asset is sold and the business plan is executed.” Walldorf Capital Ventures has already partnered with other investors to create a team of general partners in three different apartment building syndications.  Each partner offers a unique skill set to help own and operate the apartment buildings as well as to communicate with investors.  I never thought that we could own an apartment building but we now own 458 units as a general partners and nearly 1,800 units as limited partners.”  The Walldorfs were publicly recognized by business mentor they have grown their portfolio from 16 units The Walldorfs educate the public on how to invest in apartment buildings and give the public the opportunity to invest in apartment buildings by leveraging their expertise The Walldorfs said a good financial advisor will tell you that you need real estate in your investment portfolio.  Most people do not want to deal with the headache of managing a property manager or fixing up a rental home after it has been trashed by a tenant.  Walldorf Capital Ventures takes care of that for investors and does it at scale.  Unlike single family homes apartment buildings do not have large dips in value.  Apartments have proven to be a recession proof asset over the years and a preferred investment of choice for multinationals who are experts in safeguarding their wealth.  When people cannot buy homes they rent.  When housing prices are higher than people can afford they rent.  The millennial generation is putting a huge strain on the rental inventory which is pushing up rents.  When the rents and the income that an apartment building are pushed up then the value of the property is pushed up.   Selling a home can feel like a daunting task, even for those of us who work in real estate But Walldorf wasn’t the site of a man-versus-beast saga nor was it a struggle between tree-hugging idealists and greedy corporations the cat lockdown polarized two overlapping groups that both aim to defend animals On one side of the debate were supporters of Tierschutz A report by the German Legal Society for Animal Welfare Law said the lockdown was “based on incomplete and outdated science and implausible,” and the animal-welfare officer of Baden-Württemberg said it would cause “considerable stress and suffering” for cats On the other side were supporters of Naturschutz who wanted to preserve the biodiversity of the area “The crested lark is our region’s panda bear,” the state secretary for the environment declared crested larks are not native to construction sites in the way that panda bears are native to bamboo forests They scramble our expectations about endangered species: What kind of rare bird arrives after bulldozers clear a meadow Lepp found crested larks nesting in the weedy borders of grocery-store parking lots “Some of the birds have specialized in feeding on bread crumbs,” he told me Crested larks likely evolved in open areas like steppes and semidesert but they quickly adapted to fields that farmers cleared for crops they coexist with both humans and felines: in Israel which is home to an estimated one million feral cats crested larks are so abundant the birds are officially considered pests they have lost their habitat as farmers have adopted chemical fertilizers stopped rotating crops on a seasonal basis Walldorf is surrounded by monocultures of corn and rapeseed as well as potato and asparagus mounds that are covered with black foil to keep in the heat was caused by the indiscriminate use of pesticides.) I have always thought of the countryside as close to nature—but many rural animals struggling to survive in agricultural landscapes are now seeking refuge in denser human settlements Urban wastelands are becoming sanctuaries for rural birds; scientists in Czechia where the crested-lark population has fallen by two-thirds since the nineteen-seventies discovered the birds nesting in abandoned commercial developments These habitats were so fragmented that the birds stopped functioning as a single Baden-Württemberg likewise became a kind of crested-lark archipelago with islands of birds in a sea of unpopulated fields would be to “remove all free-ranging cats from the landscape by any means necessary.” Last summer was “a real horror show” for Walldorf’s cats and their owners Mimi and Fluffy refused to use a litter box for weeks but Tredwell couldn’t open the windows for fresh air She was allowed to let them roam with expensive G.P.S but the cats ran away from her when she tried to steer them away from lark territory but they disappeared and turned up at Tredwell’s door two days later When she was finally allowed to let them out again Many residents of Walldorf started to think that efforts to enforce the lockdown went too far trying to gather information about the cats,” Marine Vetter reported that locals received a letter asking them to report cat sightings to Fischer’s team The paper called Fischer and his employees the “Katzen-Stasi.” In January Walldorf hired a second conservation company to protect crested larks; Fischer resigned a state official said that Fischer’s team may have improperly collected private data is a -schutz about which Germans tend to agree.) Officials for the town of Walldorf said that they never asked Fischer’s company to gather personal data “We will not create dossiers on citizens,” Mayor Renschler told the local paper told me that all monitoring was carried out “in close coördination and with the town of Walldorf and regional conservation authorities.” He said that his team noted the addresses of homes that offending cats returned to but did not try to determine the identities of owners state officials in Karlsruhe were happy with the lockdown’s first year Just one person was issued a fine for five hundred euros for letting a cat outdoors; eight crested larks had fledged in Walldorf by the end of last summer “The general order had the hoped-for effect,” the district president declared I met Lepp on a street corner near a vacant lot in Walldorf He had a curly blond beard and wore a green Barbour jacket While residents were technically permitted to walk their cats on leashes the only pets I saw that morning were dogs who must have been overjoyed by the disappearance of their mortal enemies a male crested lark raised his feathered head out of the grass like a soldier in a Prussian helmet peeking out of a trench Lepp seemed to know every misfortune that had befallen a crested lark in Walldorf He pointed out a garage roof where crested larks once nested “The chicks were killed by a crow three days before they would leave the nest,” he said Another pair of larks nested twice in nearby fields “The wheat fell over and we lost one nest.” The second was lost to predatory magpies The pair finally succeeded on a hilltop by the Autobahn “I’m really trying to take care of my carbon footprint And now I’m getting treated like I’m a bad person.” Mimi stood between us on the kitchen counter She showed no interest in the pouch of wet food that Tredwell was squeezing into a bowl “He’s waiting until she’s gone,” Tredwell explained they are getting more and more aggressive towards each other.” Tredwell supports regulations on cat ownership She had her cats microchipped and neutered to prevent them from contributing to feral populations and she argued that Germany should require cat owners to register and pay a tax on their pets—measures that conservationists like Marra She was not indifferent to the plight of crested larks “I really look forward to having grandchildren and showing them the birds in the garden,” she said But that would probably happen somewhere other than Walldorf She was looking for an apartment in another town where Mimi and Fluffy would be more comfortable in their final years “I don’t know whether I’m going to have cats again,” she told me The dire wolf is back Why is the American diet so deadly Can we stop runaway A.I. For others — those who miraculously survived his attacks — he became a symbol of their resilience in the face of fear Richard Ramirez slipped into Los Angeles and San Francisco homes in the dead of night beaten with tire irons or hacked with machetes and sometimes drew pentagrams on the walls or on the bodies of those he murdered different news outlets started calling him a multitude of names including The Valley Intruder and The Walk-in Killer but the name that stuck was The Night Stalker Chris Walldorf didn’t know much about one of America’s most notorious serial killers “I’m not necessarily a serial killer guy by any means,” Walldorf says a drifter and career criminal who carried out a one-man reign of terror a remorseless sadist who was convicted of 13 counts or murder five counts of attempted murder and 11 counts of sexual assault In March, Walldorf, a 45-year-old filmmaker from Charlotte, returned home from a six-month stint in Los Angeles, then completed another four months of work remotely as lead editor of the upcoming Netflix documentary series Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer tells the story of The Night Stalker from the perspective of the two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives who hunted him down It also includes interviews from the handful of victims who survived his murderous onslaught The project was spearheaded by director Tiller Russell who told People Magazine the series draws upon a tradition of hazy sun-dappled Southern California noir that stretches from Raymond Chandler’s detective novels of the 1930s to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood the definitive telling of this iconic Los Angeles story has never been told,” Russell said Though Walldorf had not focused on serial killers prior to coming onboard with Russell the film editor’s interests often stray into deep synthesizers and samplers alongside keyboardist Lindsey Ryan in a series of moody With the premiere of Night Stalker slated for mid-January 3 with a virtual Queen City Streams concert filmed at Neighborhood Theatre With one foot in the music world and the other foot in the editing world Walldorf has been able to bring his talent for one discipline to bear on the other he’s able to grasp the editor’s needs regarding music he can communicate with composers more easily and the kind of connections people make when working in the pressure cooker of film production dovetailed into an unexpected opportunity for Moa as the band landed a song on the Night Stalker soundtrack hard work and compositional skill was still months in the future when Walldorf first learned about the project While attending North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem Walldorf befriended fellow student Adam Stone The Charlotte-based Stone has since gone on to become an in-demand cinematographer (Mud Stone was developing a project with Tiller Russell They needed an editor to cut together a sizzle reel to raise money for their show Although the project never got off the ground “He said ‘I’ve got a Netflix documentary series in two weeks and start on it?’” Although he’s wasn’t thrilled to say goodbye to his wife and children for several months He was making good money in North Carolina editing commercials but he was also burning out on the commercial grind and itching for a creative challenge Night Stalker represented his biggest job to date “It was perfect timing in a lot of ways,” Walldorf says “[I made a] conscious decision to expand my horizons and get out of the commercial world a little bit I was ready to do something else with my life.” most if not all of the footage has been shot This was not quite the case with Night Stalker and another editor had started post-production over a year ago But Russell was shooting two other projects concurrently while Russell turned his attention to his other projects Night Stalker was put on hold for almost a year “I was coming in as they were picking it up again,” Walldorf offers Walldorf starting laying out some of the interviews that had been shot cutting the “talking heads” together to begin charting the story’s flow Then series cinematographer Nicola Marsh (20 Feet From Stardom)went back out to shoot new scenes “She shot stylistic reenactments,” Walldorf says “[The camera crew] tried to make them as poetic as possible The plan was to place the series’ audience in the moment as the story unfolded. The summer of 1985 in Los Angeles was scorching but in an era before air conditioners were commonplace homeowners locked their windows at night and tried to sleep in the stultifying heat Porch lights were kept on to ward off the dark Cars moving slowly through neighborhoods were eyed with suspicion and everywhere people felt the tangible electricity of fear It was very important to the crew that the reenactments would not be the stilted and cheesy variety seen on most true-crime dramas so you’re not just listening to the cops say ‘We found this and we found that,’” Walldorf offers Walldorf points out that the main interviewees are homicide detectives who have seen it all They can appear detached from the horror of the situation As he cut together real-life crime-scene photos for the project’s visuals he learned he was anything but numb to the terror and tragedy of the Night Stalker helping to dramatize the story the filmmakers’ story but he was also looking at remains that had once been somebody’s mother the unidentified killer seemed to strike at random in communities scattered all over L.A and in August took a short trip to San Francisco where he murdered a couple in their 60s there still seemed to be little pattern to the slayings he often targeted houses close to freeways slipping through windows or forcing open patio doors but one victim was shot behind the wheel of her car in broad daylight when Ramirez decided to steal her vehicle During Walldorf’s editing stint he began to experience periods when he would imagine Ramirez lurking in the corners of his L.A even though he knew that The Night Stalker has been dead for seven years “I imagined what it would be like to make eye contact with him in this strange Lynchian dream way,” Walldorf says Walldorf’s unbidden creepy reveries went away editors are often in touch with the film’s composers Walldorf hit it off with the composers on The Night Stalker brothers Brooke and Will Blair (Green Room Edge of Winter) because he spoke their language I could give them direct and specific feedback,” Walldorf says when people would give him strange non-musical descriptions for what they wanted on a soundtrack ‘I want it to sound like it was made in a melting ice cap,’ or ‘This one has a galloping forcefield.’ I had no idea what they were talking about.” and he was even familiar with the audio software the Blairs were using “I knew very specifically what was happening and I could give very specific notes,” he says Prior to the Blair brothers coming onboard Walldorf had cut the episodes together over a temp soundtrack a selection of music from various sources that sets the mood and the tempo of the cut Walldorf remembers that he used a lot from film scores by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and modern composer Phillip Glass he chose a selection of post-punk and new wave from the 1980s British folk pop artist Vashti Bunyan’s delicate airy vocal and wistful performance of her song “I’d like to Walk Around in Your Mind” was a perfect fit for a crucial credit sequence in the Netflix series It provided misdirection at the beginning of the series finale a sojourn of sweetness and light before the episode delved into Ramirez’s depredations as the police noose tightened around him Russell decided to keep the song in the final cut There was just one problem – Bunyan refused to license her song for Night Stalker in a movie about a serial killer,’” Walldorf remembers Walldorf started looking for a replacement a gossamer magical tune that could dovetail into a nightmare and kept coming up empty-handed He realized the only way he could replace the song was to create something new you can pay us.’” He immediately called Ryan welcomed the assignment to quickly come up with a brand new song for Night Stalker Speaking on the phone from her home in a 110-year-old boarding house she’s restoring with her husband on her flower farm and design studio called Edgemont Garden she left her 20-year career as a piano teacher because her head was filled only with the music she was teaching.  I started writing songs again and having my own music in my head,” Ryan says I spend all day planting and I play in the dirt.” Nestled in the North Carolina mountains outside of a ghost town called Edgemont Ryan’s home sounds like a bucolic paradise but Ryan was immediately on the same page as Walldorf and guitarist Driscoll “Chris just said the feel was ‘happy’ and ‘sweet’ [with a] ’60’s folk beat,” Ryan offers the words are a little bit creepy — like a lot of love songs can be.” “Lindsey and I talked about the history of morbidly obsessive love songs,” Walldorf says Walldorf and Ryan tossed ideas via voice memos and texts The Night Stalker producers accepted it enthusiastically.“The last line of the song is heard when the title credit comes up,” Walldorf offers “I’ll find a way under your skin,” Ryan replies.Even though it’s a song for a movie about a serial killer it’s still the happiest song Moa has ever written “But it still sounds spooky because we just can’t help ourselves.” The Night Stalker’s season finale begins with a cold opening then it fades away as the audience hears a fairly innocuous story about the L.A public library over pretty footage of the city in the 1980s The scene grows darker as the librarian being interviewed describes her encounter with Ramirez The title Night Stalker comes up and Ryan sweetly sings In addition to the exposure a song on a hotly anticipated Netflix series will afford Moa the song has also kicked the band’s butts to get their record in order Landing the song gave the group the motivation necessary to put finishing touches on the album Once people hear the song on Night Stalker she hopes they’ll be interested in checking out the album evoking haunted music-box melodies and subterranean rumblings deep beneath the earth’s crust MOA – “Loose Ends”Guitars turn clangorous as a volcanic eruption on a momenta notice Ryan’ s sweetly feathered vocals can sound girlish yet they harbor an ever-present hint of icy malice Moa’s music is like diving into a bottomless well only to discover you’re floating untethered in a sky full of stars Walldorf came home to Charlotte in March during a break in the series’ post-production only to be told to work from home to complete his job as COVID-19 swept the country He’s already started post-production work on another Netflix series and he’s doing the gig from his home studio without the enforced exile from his family Richard Ramirez learned that he was sentenced to die in California’s gas chamber See you in Disneyland.” But Ramirez was denied the notoriety of an execution until he died in 2013 from complications secondary to B-cell lymphoma When asked what he hoped viewers would take away from Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer they refuse to be defined by the Night Stalker.” that even they sold the Charleston-based company there were 16 Sticky Fingers across the Southeast and at least that many e-mail messages arriving each day with tantalizing new expansion proposals ‘Please open a Sticky Fingers in my hometown,’” Walldorf recalls “We thought the company had outgrown our managerial skills: We always felt there were people who knew better than we did and we thought new ownership would help us grow.” padding its portfolio with another seven locations Watching employees from his seat at one of the 12 surviving Sticky Fingers “They were cleaning the floor with a whisk broom and a piece of paper because they didn’t have the right height broom and a dustpan,” he says “So I ran across the street to Lowe’s and bought them; the employees were like kids at Christmas so there was a focus on cost control and making bad long-term decisions to chase the short-term dollar.” Now Walldorf; fellow founders Jeff Goldstein and Todd Eischeid; and Robert Patterson longtime operating partner of the chain’s original location on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard have taken on an even bigger clean-up project The partners are determined to save the chain by reviving the excitement that surrounded Sticky Fingers when it first brought Memphis-style barbecue to the Lowcountry blazing a path for outsider smoked meat that Texan John Lewis shadowed almost 25 years later “I told our board we’ll never close another restaurant,” Patterson says We don’t need to have a million locations or be traded on the stock market We want to return this place to its glory days.” Corporate legend holds that Sticky Fingers started on a lark who would later become locally known as the owner of Sofa Super Store had successfully sold hickory-smoked ribs in Chattanooga He figured the recipe would do equally well in Charleston Herb Goldstein helped set them up in a former Po’ Folks “There were just not a lot of restaurants in Mount Pleasant so we were busy from the start,” Walldorf says when Goldstein finally emerged from the overwhelmed kitchen he approached a table of customers to ask after their meal but it was all great.’ The whole concept had an authenticity about it that people appreciated.” an appetizer woven from battered onion slivers Sticky Fingers was so beloved that an edition of the “Where the Locals Eat” travel guide listed Sticky Fingers as the community’s pick for best family restaurant best homestyle food and best place to take children But the brand was becoming equally well known beyond the region through its mail-order barbecue service and bottled sauces sold at grocery stores the only place to buy Sticky Fingers’ sauces was the Harris Teeter across the parking lot from the Mount Pleasant restaurant “Then an incident occurred with Maurice Bessinger,” who ruled the pre-made mustard sauce market in the late 1990s “Some Walmart executives were in his store and they picked up white supremacist literature All of a sudden these grocery stores kicked out his product Sticky Fingers was selling bottled sauce in 4,000 groceries nationwide the numbers were daunting – and a distraction from their growing families They started talking seriously about getting out “The three of us had argued about everything for 14 years so that wasn’t anything different,” laughs Walldorf who still shares a downtown office with Goldstein and Eischeid Although they negotiated to retain board seats when they sold the men didn’t anticipate the brand would need much steering to stay on course “We were naïve and didn’t foresee what was coming,” Walldorf says we thought the company would just keep going.” the private equity group in charge hired a CEO who recoiled at Sticky Fingers’ casual way of doing business “We were less a corporation than a loose collection of friends so we struggled with the new management,” Walldorf says “Was he doing the right thing that we should have done all along or screwing up a brand that we spent years building we should have been louder and banged our fists on the table.” the founders stood by as the new owners laid off employees; restructured the compensation plan so managers weren’t given a share of profits and radically cut back on material expenses: Even the onion loaf was deemed too costly to produce briefly putting the chain under a bank’s control “They gutted the brand.” According to Walldorf one location was forced to use paper plates because a supplier repossessed its dish machine Even after the Red Hot & Blue BBQ chain picked up Sticky Fingers Walldorf felt like the days when an employee would volunteer to fix a guest’s flat tire while he ate were very far away I told Chad we had to get rid of the middle man,” Patterson says the founders moved the company’s headquarters back to Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and invited restaurant and catering managers to Charleston for a two-day ideas swap “We’re making sure we do everything the best way possible,” Patterson says pointing out that the brisket is now cooked in butcher paper because a cook suggested it the chain isn’t making many changes beyond restoring the blues soundtrack – “over the years I’d hear anything from Britney Spears to classic rock,” Walldorf says – and purging the menu of misguided items they’d put a steak on there and eight different burgers: Just a bunch of stuff that we frankly didn’t do very well.” “We got to bring the signature loaf back,” Patterson says “People told me they quit coming because we got rid of the loaf.” Despite the drive toward consistency and stability Walldorf and Patterson are very touchy about the word “chain,” which to them represents everything that’s antithetical to Sticky Fingers “When I hear people say Sticky Fingers is a chain “Part of the culture is we always fight against that word,” Walldorf says regional … I still can’t say that ‘ch’ word.” After 10 years of seeing Sticky Fingers run as a traditional chain Walldorf and Patterson are apparently worried that restaurants with multiple matching locations can’t display personality or support their communities they had a chance to prove themselves wrong Sticky Fingers in Mount Pleasant didn’t lose power during the storm so Patterson opened the restaurant on Saturday at 3 p.m who wore his rain boots throughout service in addition to catering meals for 500 National Guard members Echoing that group of forgiving patrons that Goldstein encountered during Sticky Fingers’ first-ever dinner service one of those customers reviewed the experience on Yelp: “Let me tell you I have never been so impressed by Worldwide needless to say we’ve all had enough of lockdowns But soon cats in a small German town are going to get a taste of what it’s like to be locked down. House cats in Walldorf, a picturesque town in the south-western German state of Baden-Württemberg are going to spend much of this summer trapped inside So why is Walldorf inflicting such misery on the town’s poor kitties the local authorities want to try and protect some local bird species from extinction The cat lockdown is part of much wider conservation efforts especially those concerning the crested lark – one of Germany’s most critically endangered bird species The crested lark is so vulnerable because it nests on the ground which means that its eggs are particularly exposed to predators like house cats only six of the birds were recorded in Walldorf The town’s other measures to protect the lark include pausing construction work and laying traps for magpies and foxes And it isn’t just this summer that the cats are being locked up Walldorf residents are expected to keep their feline friends indoors from April to August for the next three years – or face a €500 (£425 that fine could rise to a whopping €50,000 (£42,500 a few more nuances to the scheme than Walldorf just banning cats from leaving the house The rule only applies to an area in the south of the town so long as it’s shorter than two metres So if you’re wandering around Walldorf over the next few months and see loads of poor house cats on leads But at least it’s all for a good cause Did you see these five spectacular train journeys you should try on Germany’s €9 travel pass Thanks for subscribing! With the two newcomers Marius Bülter and Julian Justvan in the starting XI TSG Hoffenheim lived up to their billing as favourites it was the Regionalliga team who had the first major chance Louis Safranek had a sight of the goal in the TSG area but his shot failed to get the better of goalkeeper Oliver Baumann TSG were slow out the blocks and only had their first real chance after the drinks break as a dipping effort from Jacob Bruun Larsen hit the crossbar in the 28th minute Grischa Prömel scored from 13 metres out following a beautiful one-two with Muhammed Damar to give Hoffenheim a deserved lead TSG created several more chances before the break but Luis Idjakovic in the Walldorf goal was on hand to prevent further goals Pellegrino Matarazzo rotated the entire team for the second half Bambasé Conté had the chance to make it 2-0 but his shot after a perfect counter-attacking move was blocked at the last moment but Maxi Beier fired just wide of the target after being set up by Dennis Geiger (54) as Kevin Vogt stepped up to take a penalty kick and found the back of the net - he is still to score for the club in a competitive match as Tim Fahrenholz drilled the ball into the right-hand corner from a half-left position to pull a goal back (71) as Pavel Kadeřábek slotted the ball home from close range to finish off a tidy combination move (76) Tom Bischof had a great chance to make it 4-1 from the penalty spot but the midfielder blasted his spotkick over the bar to keep the score at 3-1 Pellegrino Matarazzo was satisfied after the match: "The result was secondary after an intensive week of training the score could or should have been even higher The boys are very focused and ready to implement the content we're working on." And goal scorer Grischa Prömel was also happy: "It was a good friendly The coach is challenging us and we are working hard I previously played together with Marius Bülter at Union Berlin We can look forward to having him in the team.'' headquarters in Walldorf I had an eye-opening discussion about the upcoming series of Sapphire events taking place this year in Orlando my SAP contact argued that it was unnecessary to visit more than one Sapphire event as SAP was implementing the same program at every location There is no better example of SAP’s egocentricity If the main goal of attending a Sapphire event was merely to learn more about SAP then attending the event at all would be a waste of resources a comprehensive database available online and in cooperation with the Hasso Plattner Institute Everything a customer needs to know about SAP can be delivered to their doorstep free of charge via a browser So why even bother boarding a plane and booking a hotel SAP’s egocentric point of view regarding the SAP community explains their decision to copy and paste the same program at every Sapphire event this year as well as their recommendation to visit only one of these locations The only surprise is why SAP has not yet proclaimed Walldorf the center of the ERP universe But we know better: we live in the real IT world and at the center of this world are bits and bytes and business processes The IT provider could even be replaced every now and then and it would not make a difference It is then quite telling when SAP sees itself as having the monopoly over possible topics at a so-called customer event—and does not let customers take the lead and Sao Paulo—should all be completely different events SAP should offer a round trip with discounted admission prices the North American SAP partners will set the tone with the ASUG (America SAP User Group) visitors will meet with the major European SAP partners and the German-speaking SAP User Group (DSAG) the Latin American SAP community will come together and most likely discuss very different challenges than in either Orlando or Barcelona Even though SAP presents similar offerings all over the world the SAP markets and communities are starkly different there is probably much more discussion of cloud computing than in Europe we are observing first time implementation in many cases release upgrades and hybrid systems are up for discussion SAP should observe their Sapphire event not through their current egocentric lens Färbinger is Editor-in-Chief and Publisher at E-3 Magazine Δdocument.getElementById("ak_js_1").setAttribute("value",(new
