On February 9, 2025, Vernon Wangen, was welcomed into heaven at the age of 59, due to heart failure. He grew up in Harvey, North Dakota and graduated with the Class of 1984.  After high school, he attended Bismarck State College and then he joined the Army National Guard, where he served until 1992 with deployment in Panama, earning the rank of Sergeant. He then made his home in Fargo, ND where he served as a loan officer in the banking profession, along with program manager at Innovative ND, and part of the NDSU Research & Technology Park, until his passing. Vernon will always be remembered for his quick wit and his smirky smile after he told one of his jokes.  His journey on this earth was one marked by love and laughter and his passing has left a void in the hearts of his family and friends. He leaves behind his siblings, Audrey (Larry) Toso, Floyd Wangen Jr, Lonnie (Michele) Wangen and Doreen (Daryl) Brandt; and his nieces and nephews: Kayla Toso, Steven (Amy) Toso, Chelsea (Will) Partlow, Devon (Heather) Wangen, Dylan Brandt, Dallas Brandt, Alex Wangen and Nicholas Wangen, as well as 5 great nieces Brooklyn, Eliose, Emberlyn, Freya and Felicity. He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Vaughn Wangen; his grandparents, Marvel and Inga Wangen and Adam and Katharina Schmidt; as well as numerous aunts and uncles. Still, its role as an urban hinge on the heterogeneous area between the vocational school centre, the old town hall, the grammar school and the fairground is crucial. By opening up the hall on three sides through the spacious foyer and the integrated cafeteria, the new building not only creates a visual but also a functional network for the entire campus. © Brigida GonzálezThe entire design and building concept is based on a climate-friendly and recyclable construction and was realised with regard to a sustainable environmental footprint in accordance with the guidelines for sustainable building of the district of Ravensburg and with the support of the Vorarlberg Energy Institute The realisation was based on a holistic approach and took into account criteria such as building ecology biodiversity and near-natural construction The sustainability concept includes measures such as the use of regional building materials and local timber as well as the avoidance of pollutants and the protection of species on the building the creation and preservation of landscape-defining elements on the outside of the building the minimisation of sealed surfaces — made his presence most felt at receiver “Parker is one of a kind,” Stewartville coach Garrett Mueller said 200-pound Wangen combined with quarterback Vincent Wellik to own the first half and set the tone for the remainder of the game as he came up with a pair of gorgeous touchdown catches The first covered 50 yards with Wangen reaching over the top of an Albany defender grabbing it and then scooting in the final 15 yards and into the end zone The second one was a perfectly-delivered 20-yard TD toss by Wellik into the right corner of the end zone just before the close of the first half Wangen high-pointed the ball with two hands in traffic and wound up with it “That ball (in the end zone) couldn't have been thrown any better That was exactly the kind of offensive juice that Stewartville was looking for from Wangen — and Wellik — and it led to a 33-20 Stewartville win as if to quickly prove that his first half was no fluke took a punt and sprinted 44 yards with it early in the third quarter Stewartville was in the end zone and this Tigers win was all but clinched taking a direct snap from center and sprinting 9 yards up the middle with it for what truly was a clinching touchdown Stewartville is in the Prep Bowl for the second consecutive season Stewartville will vie to become back-to-back state champions when it takes on Dassel-Cokato at 1 p.m 3-ranked Huskies (11-1) finished with just one loss His punt return in the second half was a back breaker in this game It kind of put the game out of reach for us Our kids were flying around trying to get him.” 7-6 with just over 4 minutes left in the second quarter They closed the half going on a 13-0 scoring run then had the lead up to 26-7 with 5:43 left in the third quarter after a Dylan Scanlan 1-yard run following Wangen’s big punt return that crucial punt return and three touchdowns But when Stewartville really needed a defensive stop That included late in the fourth quarter when Albany was making a little bit of a run at the Tigers But Stewartville put a forceful end to that threat including standout defensive lineman Graysen Schneider setting that tone on Albany’s last crack at it with a 9-yard chase-down sack of Roemeling Stewartville's Justice Deno picking off a Roemeling pass “But that sack doesn’t happen without everyone else on our defensive locking things up We’ve got a talented crew across the board.” That crew is now set to try to achieve what it did for the first time one year ago that we get another week together,” Mueller said “I wish we could stretch it out even longer But we are going to look forward to the week And we can’t wait to go for the state title on Saturday.” CLOQUET – After 27 years as the principal of Churchill Elementary School David Wangen will retire at the end of the year I'm most proud of my great staff that we have in the building just the great students and families that have been really supportive of the school,” Wangen said After working as a teacher in the Twin Cities and spending a brief stint as a principal in Grand Marais Wangen accepted the principal position at Churchill Elementary in 1998 Wangen said the decision to work for Churchill Elementary was because of Cloquet School District’s strong academic reputation while also providing Wangen – who is originally from Moose Lake – an opportunity to raise his children in his native Carlton County and be closer to his parents and in-laws “My wife and I just landed in a great community 27 years ago “I'm most proud of just our school's academic achievement and just our focus on our students being the priority,” Wangen said Wangen said he is proud of Churchill's ability to develop relationships and communication with students and families which Wangen said fostered greater student success Cloquet School District Superintendent Michael Cary said he will miss Wangen’s leadership at Churchill saying that Wangen was a calm and steady presence in the district that he was always able to count on “He can leave the role knowing that he's done great work on behalf of the community and has left a really strong legacy behind him for the next person to kind of step into,” Cary said noting that he will become a grandfather in April Wangen plans on taking an overdue multi-country trip to Europe to celebrate his retirement he plans to get to work on building a cabin near Grand Rapids that will serve as a fishing retreat but I'm looking forward to that next part of my life,” Wangen said fishing and golf Wangen plans to use to continue teaching Driver’s Education through Cloquet Community Education Though he is looking forward to retirement Wangen said he will continue to miss the students that made Churchill Elementary what it is “I'll miss seeing the students every day and greeting them as they come into school which is what I've done everyday,” Wangen said “So I'll definitely miss their smiling faces.” Merland “Merlin” “Merle” L died peacefully at Springbrook Assisted Living in Onalaska Merle was born to Edward and Bertha Wangen on 11/22/1930 in Lanesboro He was baptized at First Lutheran Church of Highland and confirmed at Elstad Lutheran Church He was the youngest son and the eighth of ten children this was “a large family to raise on an 80-acre farm during the Depression years.” The Wangen’s religion and values were those of the Norwegian Lutheran Church in addition to attending classes at the one-room public schoolhouse through 8th grade Merle also attended Norwegian parochial school (“folkehogskole”) each summer for Norwegian religion and language lessons and he he was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sparta He also helped establish two churches in his lifetime: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Rochester and Gift of Grace Lutheran Church in Holmen Merle recalled the summer of preparation for confirmation which followed the completion of Norwegian parochial school lessons He was to give up the child-like ‘knee knickers’ and get a ‘man’s suit’ complete with long pants and matching coat for confirmation He and his parents took a day-long road trip to La Crosse to get the suit at Newburg’s Menswear and this would be his first excursion beyond the county lines of his birthplace but he “did not stray far from Mom and Dad in the ‘Big City.’” He writes “I did not realize at the time that my childhood days were over Little did I know that in five years I would be in the U.S Air Force thinking that another war involving the U.S he was stationed in London where he stayed for the majority of his four-year service Norway where he intended to finally meet his Grandpa Ole Ed’s life was hard on the farm and times were tough He had been logging and working the farm with his father As soon as he was old enough to work outside the farm he began a railroad job digging tunnels from Oslo to Bergen Ed could see there was hope for a better life outside of Norway and he emigrated to America on the Lusitania along with 3,000 other immigrants when he was 21 years old Merle was 21 when he showed up on Grandpa Ole’s doorstep - the same age Ed was when he left the farm It had been nearly four decades since Ole had seen his son Merle was eager to meet his grandfather and proud to be the first of the “American” Wangen’s to visit family in Norway but I wish it was Ed instead.” Over the years it seemed the sting of this greeting had dulled for him the complicated feelings and thoughts he had about the relationship his father had with his grandfather are not known  Merle had ‘a good assignment’ in London and was trained as a member of the U.S He was honored to stand guard near Buckingham Palace for the Coronation of young Queen Elizabeth II “I was within 20 feet of her procession when she left the palace and again when she returned!” He certainly was a long way from Fillmore County The spectacle of this dramatic event left quite an impression on the young man from rural Minnesota he kept a 1953 Queen Elizabeth-faced British half-penny in his front pants pocket for good luck After Merle’s military service ended in 1954 he did ‘day jobs’ for local farmers He heard from a guy that Dutch Fishbaugher was looking for two men to help with bailing hay on his farm near Harmony The guy added that there were some good lookin’ young women there young Marjorie when she brought lunch to the men working in the field Of course Merle wanted to ask her out; but didn’t have the nerve didn’t think he stood a chance with her He decided to write a note to her suggesting they go to a show ‘yes!’” And that was the beginning of their life-long love story (Fishbaugher) were married at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony Their first home was in a close-knit neighborhood in Rochester and started their family A job promotion with Imperial Oil brought the family of five to Sparta Here they raised their five children and relished time with their grandchildren and hosted countless holiday parties Anyone stopping by in the late morning or early afternoon was welcome to join Marge and Merle at their dining room table for their ritual coffee breaks - always with a cookie or bar baked by Marge Merlin owned MW Painters and worked as a painting contractor most of his career He was lucky to have honest and hard-working men on his crew - his son Mark Satisfied customers were the only advertising needed historic mansions and commercial properties in the area were beautified by the high quality work of MW Painters Merle decorated the outside of home with lights and a NOEL sign He and Marjorie made lefse a few times each year and he was in charge of making the oyster stew for Christmas Eve He also enjoyed baking Norwegian sandbakelse He was also one to find a couple of good lutefisk dinners at local churches each year He was able to fix almost anything and was especially good at math and mechanical problem-solving He was always willing to build or fix something for anyone who asked He restored a 1923 Model T Ford truck just like the one his father had owned and then drove around in it with his 87 year old dad back in 1975 he created a riddle-based treasure hunt to challenge and entertain guests at the family’s annual Spring Fling party He built quilt racks and unique bird feeders for Christmas gifts he carved classic Air Force planes out of wood blocks just by looking at photographs of old planes Merle did many household projects for his wife and his children he would work out a solution and explain it to you “You follow?” Merle showed his love by sharing what he created for the enjoyment of others Merle wrote a collection of autobiographical essays which he titled Memories: Son of a Norwegian Immigrant Farmer (Depression Era.) These memories from childhood - young adulthood will be shared with future generations of Wangen’s The theme of his memoir is the question he asks of the reader “Were these ‘the best of times and the worst of times?’” Over a decade later he wrote a brief addendum with attention drawn to contemporary diseases and the persistence of poverty and homelessness in America “‘Are these ‘the best of times and the worst of times?’” (Fishbaugher;) their five children: Jaqueline (Peter) Oehler and Heidi (Paul) Burke; and grandchildren: Megan Jones Mark Wangen (Macy Johnson,) Luke (Shayla) Wangen Sam Burke; and great grandchildren: Madeline Wangen He is preceded in death by his parents and seven older siblings MINOT — A controversial 45% pay raise for the head of North Dakota's Department of Veterans Affairs has prompted a House appropriations subcommittee to approve an amendment ending the organization's independence But that pay increase wasn't approved by lawmakers O'Brien says lawmakers only approved a 6% increase for DVA salaries for the first year of the current biennium and a 4% increase for the second year Wangen got a 6% increase in the first year and a 45% increase in the second "We were put in a situation legislatively," she said "We need to be conscientious about spending dollars outside of what the Legislature appropriates." In testimony on SB2025 submitted to the House Appropriation Committee's Human Resources Division Air Force colonel appointed to ACOVA by Gov argued that the raise for Wangen was justified by his "professional" and "exemplary" job performance Bialke claims that ACOVA researched the salaries paid to public employees occupying positions similar to Wangen's both inside and outside of North Dakota and concluded "he was substantially underpaid as an executive official competently leading a significant North Dakota state agency long-term." given Commissioner Wangen’s consistently exceptional duty performance and his highly demanding and multifaceted duty responsibilities ACOVA decided to review and properly address this matter," Bialke wrote not the executive branch or any state agency She said that the DVA went far beyond what lawmakers appropriated for salary increases and reported the overage as a "deficiency," a budgeting process that's typically reserved for unexpected spending overages which would be outside of the limits of the legislative appropriation," she said "Our frustration as committee members is the spending without the authority to do so." Wangen claimed ACOVA "utilized past guidance by ND Legislators AG’s office" and that "the ND Governors office was aware" of the salary increase "ACOVA did not like the process and now neither do you," he wrote Kelly Armstrong feel about creating a new cabinet position "The governor believes it would be better to study the idea during the 2025-27 interim," Armstrong spokesman Mike Nowatzki told me The leading authority for the Architecture & Design community Recharge in a Restored Spanish Farmhouse in Menorca Words: Athena Waligore a collaborative effort between two University of Stuttgart research institutes pioneers a humble building material into a soaring Discover the most recent industry promotions and company news in Interior Design’s March 2025 edition of On the Move Interior designer Emma Maclean embraces her love for Hong Kong sharing how community plays a central role in her hospitality projects You are using an outdated browser. artistic talent in our area is astounding Some of that flair will be highlighted during the upcoming Juried High School Art Show The annual art show sponsored by Lanesboro Arts is an event which is positive and supportive in many ways for the young student artists The Juried High School Art Show will take place from January 11 through February 2 at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery in Lanesboro with an opening reception on January 11 from 5-7 p.m “Lanesboro Arts is beyond proud to invest in the creativity of local youth through all of our educational programs These are the out-of-the-box creators and problem solvers of tomorrow – it seems only natural to showcase their artwork in the Gallery where it can be shared with the wider community We hope this show is an opportunity for students to take pride in their skills and for visitors to celebrate the meaningful impact of the arts in our schools,” commented Kara Maloney The art show will be featuring artwork from grades 9-12 and will include pieces from students at Fillmore Central Entries will be diverse and will range from photographs a senior at Lanesboro High School is excited to enter her first piece of artwork in the Juried High School Art Show Wangen’s piece is an acrylic painting that took her approximately a month to complete Wangen describes the painting as “a tiger in a swampy lagoon-looking place with lily pads around it.” She chose very impactful colors for the painting “This is the first final piece I am proud of,” explained Wangen which is why she decided to enter the painting in the art show after it was suggested Wangen enjoys art so much that this year she is taking three art classes at Lanesboro High School has had her artwork included in art shows in the past and has more than one piece in this year’s Juried High School Art Show Johnson’s first piece is a watercolor print of a Puffin which is titled “Poofin,” and the second is a still life drawing “My parents like to joke that I have been interested in art since I was little and they have no idea where the artistic abilities come from,” joked Johnson The art teachers at our area schools are very appreciated and respected by their students These individuals spark creativity in their students that otherwise may not have been discovered Johnson speaks very highly of Lanesboro High School art teacher Stena Lieb saying she goes above and beyond for her students “She is a great art teacher because she is actually willing to invest in unique art materials in order to teach kids.” “I think it is really important for them to gain some self-confidence in their artwork Especially because it’s one thing having their artwork in the halls of the school but it’s completely different when it’s out in the community and everybody can see it,” noted Lieb “The Juried High School Art Show at Lanesboro Arts is beneficial to the students on many levels this is the first time seeing their work in a professional art gallery It gives students not only a sense of pride to see their work displayed alongside other incredible student artists in the area but it also gives them a sense of validity about their talents,” stated Abbey Potter “When students attend the opening reception they have the opportunity to speak with other students Through interactions and opportunities like this they begin to view themselves as less of a student taking an art class We have some incredible student artists at Chatfield High School I’m thankful for Lanesboro Arts for putting together this wonderful show year after year,” explained Potter Lanesboro Arts is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m For more information on the High School Juried Art Show or if you have any questions please visit lanesboroarts.org or phone has been in need of a kidney transplant due to complications with diabetes — Photos by Eric Johnson/photodesk@austindailyherald.com Jay Wangen didn’t ask his cousin to give him her kidney but through her gift he will get a second chance Wangen has faced several health issues: Along with 15 years of diabetes he had heart bypass surgery and a mini-stroke doctors told him he would need a new kidney Wangen has lived in California for about 29 years When doctors told him he was still healthy enough to choose where he wanted to be treated maybe this is the Lord telling me it’s time to go to Minnesota,” he said Jay Wangen sits with his cousin Barbie Laughlin and describes what led up to Laughlin donating a kidney to Wangen moved next door to his parents in Austin about two years ago so Wangen could be treated at Mayo Clinic and be near family Wangen has been on dialysis about two years and was on a long waiting list for a new kidney he met up with his cousin Barbara “Barbie” Laughlin after her mother passed away at her mother’s funeral and asked how Wangen was After Laughlin found out Wangen was on dialysis it didn’t take long for her to decide to donate one of her kidneys [talking about] everything she had done … a lot of things,” Laughlin said “And I was sitting there in church wondering ‘What are they going to say about me?’ I couldn’t really come up with anything He’s telling me I have to give my kidney to Jay.’” Laughlin smiles as her cousin Jay Wangen tells of a story of when they were young “I just didn’t know if he wanted a girl part Other family members weren’t a match for Wangen and his wife — who also wasn’t a match — considered donating one of her kidneys to “the pool” to help Wangen get to the top of the donor list Yet there wouldn’t have been anyone to help them both with the recovery process which will take about two to three months for Wangen and about six weeks for the donor — in this case Laughlin said it will be hard to give up running for six weeks but it would be nice to get a bit of a rest as well “No running for six weeks and I can’t lift anything over 10 pounds which gets me out of a lot of fall yard work,” she laughed which meant she also had time to do the time-consuming procedure and testing that donors go through “I just thought the timing was [good],” she said Wangen was very thankful to his cousin for donating her kidney to help him survive “Just 200 percent,” Wangen said to his cousin about his appreciation Wangen will spend time in Gift of Life Transplant House While doctors say recovery will take two to three months Wangen has heard of people starting to feel better right after the new kidney is in place “I might get off the surgery table and go for a jog,” he laughed Wangen hasn’t been very nervous for himself but he’s been a bit nervous for his cousin Laughlin admitted she’s a little nervous to give away one of her kidneys but she’s grateful to be a match and be able to help Wangen The only thing Laughlin is disappointed to miss is the celebration at the end of the surgery when the doctor comes out to tell family and friends everything went well She told her husband to record the excitement A website on CaringBridge was made for Jay, and can be found at www.caringbridge.org/visit/jaywangen Wangen and Laughlin are scheduled for surgery Oct Germany’s Pumpenfabrik Wangen GmbH has
