“We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at Calvary Baptist Church, 43065 Joy Road, Canton, Michigan. The live stream link will be active ten minutes before the service at http://www.cbcjoy.org/memorial
Our family would like to honor the memory of Larry by recalling how he exemplified the love of Christ
The motivation for Larry’s life work:
“A new commandment I give to you
that you love one another; just as I have loved you
you also are to love one another.” John 13:34
he came to know Jesus Christ; he was baptized on October 16
His relationship with his savior shaped his heart; he desired that others know the love of Christ
in response to a missionary presentation in Christian Service Brigade
he felt God’s call to mission service and dedicated his life to that
The progression of his faith-driven maturity began with his leadership in the Christian Service Brigade in high school
he attended Moody Bible Institute where he prepared for missionary service
and together they planned to head into missions overseas
He completed his degree in sociology at Eastern Michigan University
and a short time later he and Sharon entered into language training in preparation to go to Africa with Mission Aviation Fellowship.
not for human masters.” Colossians 3:23
Larry served God and others as a pilot for 40 years
After language school in Switzerland (1975-76)
he and Sharon headed to Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo) where they lived for about 19 months before starting the MAF program in Bata
From there he flew people and supplies into remote locations in CAR and other nearby countries
Instead of driving them back to secure the aircraft
Larry engaged them with Bible stories while waiting for his next flight
Each person he met appreciated what he brought to them
but more than that they sensed his love for them
As the mission field grew and aviation opened doors for people to access more remote locations for a variety of services
Larry moved to other locations in Africa and
Larry researched airplanes that would be faster and more efficient for the long-distance mission needs of the region
In 1993 a donor provided the means for a King Air 200
and Larry flew this plane for the rest of his time with MAF
He loved that airplane and all those it could reach.
He and Sharon lived in seven different countries
leaving a legacy of love and commitment to excellence
His career overseas came to an end in 2014 after a medical emergency grounded him from flying
his family was privileged to have more time to interact with him and care for his needs just as he had cared for our needs.
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you
Do not be afraid…” Deuteronomy 31:8
Larry’s spirit was freed from his earthly tent
that he has been reunited with family members who preceded him in death: his parents
and his granddaughter Keren (eldest daughter of Kraig and Loren)
We draw hope and comfort by the legacy of faith he left each of us
we believe you have seen the face of God and have been welcomed into His arms with the words:
good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:23
We would love to hear your stories and memories of Larry
In lieu of flowers, we would like to continue Dad’s legacy by making a donation in his name to Mission Aviation Fellowship or a mission organization of your choice.

2024 by the DGzRS (Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbruechiger = German Maritime Search and Rescue Service) shows smoke billowing from the German-flagged tanker ship "Annika" (L) as the crew of the sea rescue vessel "Arkona" (R) sprays water on the burning ship to extinguish the fire
Berlin: A fire broke out aboard a small oil tanker off Germany on Friday
and seven crew were rescued from the burning vessel in the Baltic Sea
Eyewitnesses reported a loud explosion around 9:15 am local time (0715 GMT)
and dark smoke was seen billowing from the ship
which the report said is used to resupply vessels at sea with fuel
"A fire broke out on the Annika tanker on Friday morning," the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies said
adding that the ship was carrying about 640 tonnes of oil
"All seven crew members on board were picked up and brought to shore."
Emergency service vessels were fighting the fire and more rescue crew headed to the area on helicopters
The German-flagged ship is 73 metres (240 foot) long and 12 metres wide
It was anchored and now also attached to a tugboat
The statement added that the ship was in the Mecklenburger Bay in waters between the towns of Kuehlungsborn and Warnemuende
Video published by Bild daily online later showed a fire-fighting vessel aiming a powerful jet of water at the ship and no more flames or smoke visible
Asked about the risk of a capsize or oil spill by AFP
a central command spokesman said "the investigation is ongoing"
four women are carving out three businesses
is a graphic designer and teaches yoga through Pure Yoga
is a wedding and senior portraits photographer
but found working out of her home distracting
the cost to rent a storefront for a business that didn't require a physical space was prohibitive
But for one person who doesn't need a space
and a deep porch overlooking Harbor Springs's harbor
Baker recognized a good space for Valade's yoga studio
Valade and Baker wanted to further share the space
and so contacted VanderZee and Warnemuende
The four began the process of renting the space in February and March
A front room serves as an office for the four
and it includes a work space for VanderZee and Warnemuende
who also make flower arrangements for bridal events
"There's a creative energy out of all of us," said VanderZee
"It's great to be able to bounce our ideas off of one another so we can all be productive."
The four faced some obstacles in securing the space — mainly because of the idea of three businesses in one space
with three different businesses operating under the same roof," he said
"They came with an interesting proposal and we found it was supported and permitted in the space they planned to use."
The four business owners are part of Harbor Springs' push to bring more businesses — and more younger people — downtown
Baker does double duty as a photographer and a participant in Harbor Springs's Downtown Development Authority
The authority recently wrapped up a visioning project by consulting firm WadeTrim
which evaluated how Harbor Springs could best use its resources to develop its economy and attract people to the area
Richards is also involved in the Downtown Development Authority
especially some of the recommendations that came out of last year's visioning program
is to try and maximize the use of our downtown spaces," he said
"Their storefront is an upstairs space with minimal exposure on the street side
and it's going to have three different business operating side by side within that space
It certainly supports the goal of maximizing the use of our downtown space."
The women plan to have a grand opening celebration May 25

uses a simulator to practice texting-while-driving Monday at driving training course in Saginaw Township
This simulation was part of a presentation given by an injury prevention specialist from Covenant HealthCare on texting-while-driving.SAGINAW TWP
— The spread of cellphones and gadgets since the early 2000s is nowhere more obvious than in a classroom full of teens
One recent Monday evening in a classroom at the Saginaw Township Center Courts recreation facility
Tom Jablonski announces to his class that it’s time for the course to begin
eight boys and a girl ranging from 14 to 16
switch off screens and ringers and slide the handheld devices into bookbags and pockets
during three-week courses about how to drive
To the front of the room steps 6-foot-something Robert Warnemuende
an injury prevention specialist with Covenant HealthCare
He’s spent more five and a half years in the emergency room and works as a Mobile Medical Response emergency medical technician

Warnemuende’s mom informed him his father wouldn’t be there for Christmas

Saginaw and Bay counties warning inexperienced drivers of the potentially lethal outcome of distracted driving
as some students lean on elbows or slouch with their hooded sweatshirts draping over the backs of their chairs
“Seven teenagers I’ve had to clean up and prepare for their parents to say goodbye
many students “learn it’s OK” to use cellphones while driving from watching their parents
A list of driving distractions appear on 24-inch screen at the front of the room — changing radio stations
The final distraction is in bold red letters: “Cell phones,” it says
Looking away from the road for five seconds is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field blindfolded
Talking on a cellphone while driving is comparable to driving with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 and increases your chances of crashing by 23 percent
when he first began teaching driver’s education
only about half the students had cellphones
I have a saying: Life is as simple as you make it,” says Warnemuende
who drives with his set to silent and flipped upside down
Can you put you cellphone down for five minutes
Warnemuende tells the class that law enforcement classifies texting and driving — a civil infraction that carries a $100 fine for a first offense and $200 thereafter — as “touching two or more buttons.”
A student is asked to send a call to his mom
“I don’t want to have to stand next to the consultation door as the doctor goes in to tell a father that he’s never going to walk his little girl down the aisle,” Warnemuende says
“I don’t want to stand outside that consultation room as a doctor tells a mother that she’ll never see her some walk across the stage.”

“Do I have something in my teeth?” asks one class member
and the computer voice asks: “Can you call my brother and see if he’s home?”
a Saginaw Township resident and the son of Tom and April McCartney

The screen switches to a real-world shot of a rescue helicopter
then a first-person perspective shot of a victim with paramedics hovering above and placing a respirator on the victim’s face
but they really aren’t,” said McCartney later
“Adding a cellphone is making you less invincible when you’re behind the wheel

— Colton Underwood will be receiving passes instead of rushing passers in the next phase of his NFL career
The 2010 Washington High graduate and two-time all-American from Illinois State will switch from linebacker to tight end for the Oakland Raiders
48 with Oakland before a switch this week to No
He played fullback in high school and moved all around the defense throughout his prep and collegiate careers
The Raiders signed the 2010 Journal Star large-school Player of the Year to a futures deal in January after two years with the San Diego Chargers
who signed the undrafted free agent out of college
“With Mychal Rivera reportedly on the trade block,” according to a report from Jeremy Warnemuende of 247Sports.com
254-pound Underwood might have more of an opportunity at the tight end spot than he would have at what is becoming a loaded linebacker position in Oakland.”
