Weinsberg presented its latest vehicle study
The new model is designed for long-distance travelling and expeditions and bears the slogan "Your Buddy for Everywhere"
It is designed to fulfil the needs of globetrotters and adventure-seekers
The exterior of the vehicle study is characterised by a vehicle graphic that picks up on cargo elements and thus creates an unmistakable appearance
Customers can choose between four typical expedition colours for the exterior design
the X-PEDITION 600 MQ offers space for up to four people
The interior design focusses on functionality and modern aesthetics
which contribute to better acoustics in the interior
and the furniture design with sloping levels are striking
There are also perforated panels made of brushed stainless steel and an LED lighting concept with a colour-changing function
The vehicle is equipped with several practical solutions
The table can be used both inside and outside
The rear bed is equipped with a sliding backrest so that it can also be used as a comfortable sofa for reading or relaxing
The new CLEANFLEX toilet is located in the bathroom and can be stowed away to save space when not in use
The CLEANFLEX system works by automatically sealing the foil bag after each use
This is done by a battery-operated sealing unit
The sealed bags are collected in a collection container and can be stored for several days without odour nuisance
A major advantage of the system is that there is no need for water flushing
The compact design also allows the toilet to be positioned flexibly
the space gained makes showering easier and offers more freedom of movement
Other technical advantages of the CLEANFLEX system include the absence of an external flap on the vehicle and an extraction system to prevent odours
Although the exact dimensions are not specified
the X-PEDITION 600 MQ offers sleeping space for up to four people
The layout presumably includes a main bed in the rear and a convertible seating area that can be used as additional sleeping accommodation
Other features of the X-PEDITION 600 MQ include LED spotlights and indirect lighting for a personalised ambience
Although no specific capacities are mentioned
it can be assumed that sufficient storage space is available
Even though no price information is available
the X-PEDITION 600 MQ appears to be positioned as a premium offering in the expedition vehicle segment
practical functions and modern design elements suggests that it is aimed at experienced travellers and adventure-seekers
The vehicle study will celebrate its world premiere at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf from 30 August to 8 September 2024

Another manufacturer joins the off-road club…
The all-new Weinsberg CaraLife 630 LQ features such a fresh
But it's actually the German company's latest production camper
Designed specifically for the most youthful
active aspiring van lifer and weekend adventurer
the new camper van features a unique floor plan fully sealed off from the driver cab to create a tiny home-like atmosphere
Flexible additions like a stowable "secret shower," customizable plank-style paneling and an indoor/outdoor kitchen space ensure that no day on the road or in the wilderness is exactly like the last
Weinsberg's new "rolling chill-out lounge" is distinctive enough to get its own model name
"CaraLife." It's a ground-up rethink about the changing tastes and needs of modern RVing
design-minded spirits who want to wring out every last millisecond of their time outdoors before grabbing a healthy
homecooked meal and retiring for a night of sleep as comfortable as home
The biggest departure from Weinsberg's other "Cara" vans is immediately clear the moment one enters the 250-in (636-cm) Fiat Ducato-based rig
Instead of the open driver cab you'll find on virtually all other camper vans
neatly splitting off the "van" from the "life."
Not everyone will like having the cab and cabin cut off in this way
but those who do will enjoy a homier space that helps one forget they're on the road
Weinsberg further bolsters this feeling with warm
Speaking of innovations turned up-and-coming standards, the deployable indoor shower room was once a rarity reserved mostly for customs and concepts but has slowly become more of a standard option available from small and large brands
Weinsberg calls its design the "Secret Shower" and installs it amidships
just in front of the rear transverse bed and between the two dinette bench seats
The dining table slides away to free up the space
and the raised dinette floor houses the shower pan and curtain below a folding lid
adding a third function to the convertible dinette
secures to the ceiling paneling and use a magnetic-close entry
Weinsberg completes the bathroom with a portable toilet tucked away in a cabinet and a vanity cabinet over the kitchen sink with built-in mirror and space for things like toothbrushes and toothpaste
the dinette is designed to seat up to five people on its two benches
The table can slide out for dining and slide quickly away for more space
Weinsberg uses its front wall to create a large
L-shaped kitchen area with a dual-burner gas stove
The console next to the entryway features an indoor/outdoor design with foldaway outdoor tabletop and slide-out pantry that can be used as a minibar
slim fridge is also positioned for quick outdoor access
the 630 LQ's rear bed is a fixed design that does not fold away to clear pass-through space for the myriad boards
bikes and skis that Weinsberg's targeted demographic will undoubtedly want to bring along
help create a cozier bedroom-like space enhanced by the personalization invited by the plank paneling
and Weinsberg even shows a surfboard mounted to the wall
providing a different way of carrying long gear
A bicycle might be a little more difficult to hang but probably possible with the right hooks and clamps
The rear of the bed can be propped up to create a sofa-style lounger for reading
working or watching the available 32-in TV hanging on the front wall over the kitchen
Weinsberg even offers an optional extension panel to create either an oversized bed measuring roughly 75 x 83-in (190 x 210-cm) – larger than a residential king – or a third berth on the dinette
Weinsberg's design doesn't leave any room for rear belted seats
but the Fiat Ducato cab can seat up to three people to match those three available sleeping berths
Weinsberg's new van was clearly inspired by the floor plans
The base Ducato is powered by a 138-hp 2.2-liter engine and six-speed manual transmission
The animated video takes a closer look at the CaraLlife 630 LQ's layout and key components
but the visuals tell the story pretty well

From the German company Weinsberg X-pedition 600 MQ
a CUV dedicated to those seeking extreme emotions and where the essential is visible to the eyes
We are approaching a new season for recreational vehicles and soon we will be talking about fairs and news
TheThe world of camper vans – CUV for the Knaus Tabbert group – continues to be the one that attracts the most attention
The market speaks the language of vans and the offer is increasingly wider
But with the limitations imposed by the basic van structure
considering the important sales numbers at European level and
also the requests for special vehicles must be taken into account and evaluated
Evaluation that is not unknown to manufacturing companies that
do their utmost to put the designers' ideas on the road
It is not far behind Weinsberg, entry brand to the Knaus Tabbert group. The brand has presented a vehicle that leaves no doubt about its vocation. We are talking about the X-pedition 600 MQ model
As the claim that accompanies its debut tells
is a candidate as the ideal travel companion for any place and terrain
The base is that of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with 150 hp and rear-wheel drive
The all-wheel drive version is available on request and also gains 10 cm of ground clearance.
The modern graphics and the sand color of the bodywork are current and centered for the type of use for which it is intended
Without forgetting the All-Terrain tires with which it is fitted as standard
A color that we also find for the underbody frame and for all the external accessories that are part of the Offroad trim
As reported in the opening… the essential is visible to the eyes
Certainly to fully enjoy this Weinsberg X-pedition 600 MQ
the rail for fixing the parcel rack with LED light bar in X-pedition design
The same luggage rack on which the platforms to disengage the vehicle
Still metal case with rear closure with integrated ladder
Even the front bumper has a granulated treatment instead of the classic painting
And the first the impression is absolutely positive
all the active and passive safety features of the Sprinter
and the internal structure of the walls and floor which is of the sandwich type
They are ten years of guarantee against water ingress
Weinsberg adopts furniture with a tessellated structure
it shows linear shapes that play with edges and depth levels
The wall units are wider in the ceiling area
mitigating at least in part the characteristic of the Sprinter which is tapered in the highest part
Also for this reason on the outside we observe the presence of swellings in correspondence with the sleeping areaThe vertical slatted wall covering profiles
give a touch of modernity and also serve the purpose of soundproofing the room further
Nothing new regarding the layout which is based on the best-selling layout for the van world
the one with a bed double transversal in the queue
And advanced dinette that builds the living using the cabin's swivel seats (which can optionally be transformed into an emergency bed)
La kitchen linear is particularly generous
we find the compressor refrigerator with door that opens on both sidesThe worktop is very usable and features a flush-mounted stainless steel sink
square and a hob with two traditional burners and an induction plate
The perforated finishing panels in brushed aluminum are very interesting and distinctive
especially if you request the toilet option
Cleanflex (which can slide under the rear bed freeing up space for a generous shower
The sink is also new and features a sliding system to save space when not in use and be convenient when needed
The complete van file Weinsberg X-pedition 600 MQ you can find it on the number PA 624

There were many gems at this year's Caravan Salon in Germany
but this Fiat Ducato-based mini motorhome from Weinsberg caught our eye
The Ducato is a popular platform for camper upfits
This is the CaraLife 630 LQ, a new offering from the German-based company for 2024. It doesn't have a pop-top roof like the new VW T7 California
but it does have a nifty kitchen fitted at the front of the living area in an L-shaped layout
and a decent amount of counter space while also creating an outdoor dining area with a fold-out table
Inside you'll find a second table that sets up for meals and stows away to make room for the shower
Showers in small vans are becoming more common
and Weinsberg opts for a quick-deploy stand-up shower nestled between the bed/garage and kitchen
A simple folding mechanism brings the cubicle shower up from the floor
and an available toilet can be stowed in the bench seat for the dinette
A mirror with storage for toiletries is mounted up front at the kitchen sink
giving this small van a legit full bathroom
The flip side is that the living area truly feels like a living area
A sizable bed occupies the back portion of the van
mounted transverse with an optional extension to make the space a bit larger
and it all sits atop a modest garage accessible from the back
Checking out options at Weinsberg's website
customization is plentiful and the end result is a posh camper for enjoying vanlife
It has seats and sleeping arrangements for three people
and it's modestly priced with a starting MSRP of €59,990 (approximately $65,000)
the CaraLife isn't available in North America
But it will be making the European rounds at shows through the fall for adventure seekers across the pond

He does it with one strong attention to trends of the moment
And embracing the concepts dear to the people of Vanlife
an increasingly widespread and active community on the web
It follows the line of branded cousins Knaus the new range of multi-purpose compact vehicles based on Volkswagen T6.1 mechanics
Born to be agile like an SUV but spacious like a van they surprise twice
The height is suns 228 cm and the line is incredibly attractive and above all aerodynamic
The home garage will no longer be a problem
electrically raised the roof by 70 centimetres
when you get on board the space is really well exploited
The first is the 500 SQM It has a rear double bed that shares part of the space with the toilet room equipped with a height-adjustable shower
it prefers the living area with a face-to-face living room and bathroom with rotating wall and protection for the removable roof area
Both models offer external and internal cargo spaces
X-Cursion Cuv offers the best in the Edition Pepper version
as usual full of features and with dedicated finishes
They expand the ranges with six new typologies housing
while for the second we find i 550 MG and MF
All with lengths contained within six and a half metres they adopt mechanics Ford Transit and interesting solutions
As in the case of 600 MEG which adopts the flexible bathroom solution
the designers have captured the essence of vanlife addressing a young and active customer group
The basis is that of Ducato measuring 636 centimetres and you immediately notice that the bulkhead was not removed between cabin and living room
an extra wall which houses the L-shaped kitchen
In the queue a transversal double bed in front of which there is the face-to-face dinette with retractable table
Here we find a removable toilet hidden under the dinette and a shower created with a curtain to hang from the ceiling and a plate that reveals itself under the table area
Various compartments and multifunctional furniture characterize the new van
Walls and ceiling with laminated slats hide guides for hanging objects and personalizing the vehicle
decal kits are also planned for the exterior

A year ago, Knaus Tabbert introduced a new kind of CUV
the "caravanning utility vehicle." Try as it might
it won't be convincing anyone outside the company that "CUV" is anything more than a cutesy marketing term for a camper van
that term is inspiring some innovative thinking
Knaus will show the latest fruits of that thinking at the 2018 Düsseldorf Caravan Salon
fruits that will include two all-new concept vans that show the path for a sportier
Knaus takes camper vans full-on "fast and furious."
Automakers are continually adding sportiness to their own CUV (crossover utility vehicle) lineups with genre-bending products and concepts like the Jaguar I-Pace and Buick Enspire
Knaus Tabbert does much the same with its own variation of "CUV."
since its entire business relies upon having a big
boxy van cabin from which to create a living area
So there's no turning the base van into a two-door or running the roofline down to the rear bumper – it's still just a big
But with the Weinsberg CUVolution and Knaus CUVision
Knaus Tabbert still manages to show a meaner
Easily the most flamboyant camper van we can recall seeing
the Weinsberg CUVolution has been drenched in bright orange "liquid chrome" paint and accented all around with matte anthracite trim that resembles carbon fiber
It wears some major "Weinsberg" badges on the huge side skirts that transition into a beefy rear diffuser
the CUVolution manages airflow with its big roof spoiler
and up front it breathes through enlarged intakes
Are van lifers looking for a camper van dressed up like a track car
But Düsseldorf attendees are certain to be drawn into the Knaus Tabbert experience
Especially if you're a large RV conglomerate with two camper van brands
The CUVision that will appear alongside the CUVolution follows the recently introduced Van Ti Plus in Knaus' newfound working interest in MAN TGE vans
This particular TGE gets some tuner-level sportiness by way of its low-set bodywork
and gray and blue color scheme with chrome side accenting
The 22-in Borbet rims add an extra hint of flash
We're not sure that either the CUVision or CUVolution is up to the task of racing down a Porsche-powered VW Transporter camper van – Knaus Tabbert isn't an actual tuning shop
so we doubt there's any horsepower bump to go along with the racy looks
these vans look like they'd have a better shot than virtually any other Class B motorhome out there
Knaus Tabbet didn't share any photos or details about the CUV concept interiors with its announcement
so we're not sure if it has any plans to slide open the doors in Düsseldorf
or if the vans will just be flashy show cars without any accompanying interior work
We're certainly going to be tugging on the door handles to see if we can find out what's lurking inside
Knaus Tabbert will also highlight the details of its evolving production "CUV" vans
showing the updated 2019 Knaus Boxdrive and Boxstar and the 2019 Weinsberg CaraTour and CaraBus
Innovations in these 2019 vans will be much more subtle than on the concepts
but more useful for the goal of living on the road
These include a new sandwich construction that increases interior standing height and improves insulation and sidewall-integrated 105-liter water tanks for further space savings
We'll bring you a closer look at the most interesting of Knaus Tabbert group camper vans
large motorhomes and caravans when we head to Düsseldorf next week

It is the 17th painting recovered by the Foundation
research by the Max Stern Art Restitution Project team identified records and key references to the German-Jewish art dealer’s ownership of the painting in the archives of the Netherlands Institute for Art History
Soon after, the Holocaust Claims Processing Office of the New York State Department of Financial Services
submitted a claim to the City of Weinsberg which had been displaying the work since 1968
The painting holds considerable meaning for this medieval Bavarian enclave
Castle Weinsberg was attacked by King Conrad III
The wives of the besieged castle negotiated a surrender granting them permission to leave with whatever they could take on their shoulders
The king laughed and accepted the clever manoeuvre
the Stern Foundation agreed with Weinsberg retaining the treasured work
This international arrangement involved the Office for Provenance Research of the German Lost Art Foundation and the Cultural Foundation of German Federal States
“Our city is thankful that with the active support of foundations and donors
we were able to acquire the painting from the Stern Foundation
this significant work can remain in the Weibertreu Museum
where it has been displayed for the last 30 years.”
“The restitution of this painting is testament to the fact that through the dedicated efforts of individuals and organizations
a small measure of justice can be brought to this dark period of history,” says Stéphane Dion
Canadian Ambassador and Special Envoy to the European Union and Europe
“I congratulate everyone involved and strongly hope that the Max Stern Art Restitution Project will continue to receive all possible support in Germany.”
The Stern Foundation is grateful to the offices of Neumeister auction house for hosting the return ceremony
When the restitution agreement was finalized this past fall
the intended venue for the ceremony was the Dusseldorf Stadtmuseum — to coincide with the opening of a travelling exhibition on Max Stern’s life and work
With the surprising cancellation of the show by the City of Dusseldorf
due to their stated concerns about Stern restitution claims in Germany
“We are hopeful that the Weinsberg return and exemplary efforts of various state and national partners will compel other German municipalities
museums and collectors to openly address restitution matters,” notes Clarence Epstein
head of the Max Stern Art Restitution Project
Max Stern (1904-1987) was the Jewish owner of an important art gallery in Dusseldorf
With the rise of Nazism and his expulsion from the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts in 1935 due to his religion
the inventory of Galerie Stern and his personal collection was sold by force and the remnants consigned to auction two years later

It used to seem the best way to camp with outdoor toys was to throw the toys on a carrier or trailer behind the RV or tow a combo camper/hauler
there's been a swarm of camper vans with integrated bike/gear garages
perfect for camping and toy hauling within the compact footprint of the van
Possibly the most convincing variant we've seen
the new Weinsberg 630 MEG [Outlaw] features an extra-high bed above a tall
It can swallow up a full quad or multiple bikes and keep them out of sight
locked safely away below the snoring GoPro protagonists above
Weinsberg takes a very different tack from Citroën, which also debuted a new ATV-hauling camper van at this year's Düsseldorf Caravan Salon. It goes more the route of British "sporthome" builders like RP Motorhomes
accommodating toys in a sealed-off garage below a raised rear bed inside
It says it's using near-hermetic levels of sealing to prevent unwanted gas fumes from escaping into the van
finishing the garage walls and furniture in a durable
which feel more like open toy haulers with camping amenities
the MEG Outlaw (the brackets are cool once
but we're dropping 'em) is designed to live as comfortably as a regular camper van
albeit with a little less headroom over top the bed
The Outlaw's configuration does look much the same as any other camper van
starting with the passenger-side kitchen with dual-burner stove
sink and 95L compressor fridge right inside its sliding entry
A front dinette seats up to four with a rear bench and available swivel driver cab seats
and a floating table attaches and detaches as needed
The bed is accessed via ladder and provides 78 x 69-in (197 x 175 cm) of sleeping space
An additional person can sleep on the converted dinette set with help from the 57 x 28-in (145 x 70-cm) front bed kit
The wet cell next to the bed ladder offers a shower
and the doorway behind the ladder provides direct access to the garage
Weinsberg offers a variety of available floor rails
load ramps and carriers for loading and securing cargo behind through the double doors
The MEG Outlaw floor plan is available on Weinsberg's CaraBus and CaraTour camper vans
functionally identical vans with different styling
Each Outlaw camper is built on the 250-in (636-cm) Fiat Ducato with 118-hp 2.3-liter MultiJet engine
Standard features include a Truma Combi 6D diesel heater/water boiler
Both the CaraTour and CaraBus 630 MEG Outlaw models start at €44,870 (approx
The model we checked out at the Caravan Salon was optioned up to €59,706 ($65,775)
with features like a more powerful 138-hp engine
single-motorcycle loading package and 50th anniversary pack

Recreational vehicle camping is a timeless family vacation tradition that provides a fun
While families with children make up a key demographic of the RV industry
that industry focuses its design and features overwhelmingly on adults
Features like illuminated wine cabinets and slide-out espresso machines do little to make the trip better for junior (though we guess they do keep mom and dad jovial)
Sure the adults are the ones buying the RV
keeping the little ones happy during the trip is priority number one
The CaraKids motorhome and caravan design studies from Weinsberg were constructed from start to finish with children in mind
and they feature a number of smart details that promise to make RV camping more fun and convenient for the smallest campers - and
Weinsberg is the entry level camper brand of the Knaus Tabbert family tree, and as we've seen with the Caravisio and Travelino
Knaus likes to explore the future of the industry and liven up trade shows with concept campers
The two CaraKids designs are among the group's latest concepts
this time exploring how the industry's future could be more kid-friendly
Weinsberg worked with Germany's Caravaning and Promobil trade publications
enlisting the help of readers to identify the types of features they'd want in a more family-friendly camping vehicle
It reworked the interiors of both its CaraHome 700 DG motorhome and CaraOne 550 QDK camping trailer
showing how its child-focused design could easily fit the two vehicle types
Unlike the outlandish style and features we often see in the concept cars of auto shows
the CaraKids' designs follow a much simpler
Weinsberg and its partners redesigned very specific parts of the camper interiors to create a more child-friendly whole
The CaraKids designs may or may not prove marketable
but they're definitely thoughtful exercises with some interesting ideas
nothing flashy or outlandish getting in the way
Weinsberg's CaraHome 700 DG is a 24.4-ft-long (7.43-m) motorhome built on a Fiat Ducato and powered by a 113-hp 2.0-liter Multijet engine
with more powerful engines available as options
It sleeps up to six on a combination of above-cab alcove double bed
rear double bed and convertible dining-area bed
along with the amenities expected of a full-fledged motorhome: electrical system
most noticeable update in the CaraKids version of the CaraHome is the extensive use of fall-out protection
Weinsberg adds stretch side netting to the convertible dining area/bed and a fold-away wall on the alcove bed
helping to keep children safe and in place
The raised rear bed also features fall-out protection in the form of the robust
slide-up ladder that makes it easy (and fun) for children to climb into bed
The ladder even includes indoor climbing wall-style grips
which kids should enjoy using to manipulate a few extra minutes out of the day by taking a slower
children can keep books and other belongings close at hand with the integrated elastic straps on the fabric wall
Because children don't stretch out as far as adults
Weinsberg uses the foot of the rear bed as a storage alcove that houses plastic bins
The bins make loading/unloading between house and camper a bit easier than drawers or cabinets
These type of plastic bins are also featured on the tall shelving unit just behind the driver's cab
Children can keep their ever-so-important electronic devices topped off using the two USB ports
The cupholder mounted to the side wall helps to stop spills
but since it's unlikely to catch every tipped cup
Post-trip clean-up becomes easier with the help of the washable
zip-away fabric panels on the seats and seat backs
The bench seating includes Isofix hardware for affixing car seats
The bathroom gets its own happy kid-camper updates
most notably the drop-down stepping stool built into the wall
The stool helps boost small children up to toilet level
Fabric storage bags keep up to six occupants' personal hygiene items organized
Child-security electrical outlets provide added safety throughout
the CaraOne 550 QDK trailer is shorter and smaller than the CaraKids motorhome
rear-corner bunks and a convertible dining area bed
Weinsberg says it can sleep up to seven with an added bunk bed and dining-area bed extension
the CaraKids concept caravan shares many features with the larger CaraKids motorhome
We won't bother rehashing things like fall-out protectors
zip-away upholstery or bathroom stepping stools
but you can see more of how these fit into the CaraOne in the photo gallery
Where the caravan version separates itself from the CaraKids motorhome is in its bunk section
The dual bunk area of the rear corner is carved out from the rest of the cabin
creating a sort of dedicated child's play and sleep area
The lower bunk folds up into the wall when not in use
and the ladder/lower bunk fall-out protector swings out to serve as a divider door
The plastic storage bins on the floor below the bunks have cushioned tops to double as comfy chairs
and children can use the floor space for play
There's also a flip-up bedside table and wall-mounted chalkboard
Each of the two bunks has its own USB port and fabric wall with elastic straps
The CaraKids caravan study includes a lockable kitchen for keeping dangerous cleaners and chemicals safely out of reach
child-safety electrical sockets and a raised front bed designed for easier diaper changes
The front bed area also includes an under-bed storage cabinet with external access
and a bedside cabinet designed for baby accessory organization
Given that the CaraKids designs are just concepts
it's not clear if any of their features will see production or how much they'll cost
The upgrades do seem smart and straightforward enough as to at least be offered as options
The kid-friendly elements and bright colors would surely make the idea of a long
bumpy family road trip much more enticing to children of all ages
Weinsberg used last September's Düsseldorf Caravan Salon and last month's CMT show to highlight its CaraKids models
We're sure it listened intently to public feedback at both shows
whose word we're inclined to take since it was integral in the creation of the CaraKids concepts
Weinsberg said that the CaraKids feature package would add about €2,500 to the price of the CaraHome 700 DG

Warning: The following article may make you want to move to Germany. It may also make you want to throw down all your hard-earned Euros and ship your very own Weinsberg Carabus 630 MEG Outlaw back to the States
It takes a lot to convince us here at RideApart to highlight and report on things with four wheels but this mobile garage is perfect
If you race motocross
or even if you just like to camp out at the trailhead and rip through forests on the weekend
this Fiat Ducato-based motorhome has you sorted
You might know the Fiat Ducato as the Ram Promaster in North America
So the bed is elevated above the garage in the rear
but wide and long enough that the manufacturer claims up to three people can sleep in it (and you thought the French were the adventurous ones)
Maximum payload for the Outlaw is 1,150 pounds – enough for two motorbikes
or a race bike and a set of tools and spares
There are two pivoting cab seats (driver and passenger) that turn around and join the dining table and two other seats
The Caratour range is powered by a 2.0L Fiat four-cylinder diesel good for 120 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque as standard. An upgraded 2.3L motor good for 180 hp is available. Gross vehicle weight (GVWR) is 8,900 lb.
The company is charging just under 45,000 Euro ($US49,000) for the vehicle in Europe, but it looks like you’d have a hard time getting one in the USA. The good news is, you can always buy a long-wheel-base high-roof Ram Promaster and kit it out yourself. Now excuse me, I’m off to my Ram dealership and Home Depot.

The German doctor hands me a small brown bottle with indecipherable markings
I am not quite sure I understand his reply
“The wine is from a new grape variety called We88-101-13
It is a cross-breeding of FR147-66 and We75-34-13.”
but I honestly think they need to work on a snappier title
shame about the label – the latest white wine to come out of the wine school
Welcome to the wonderful world of LVWO a viticulture school in Weinsberg
situated two hours South of Frankfurt in the state of Württemberg
it has been educating people about viticulture and helping them market their wines through the Staatsweingut Weinsberg winery
The viticulture school has been at the forefront of improvements in vine stock and wine quality for almost 150 years and has been a breeding ground for major advances in combatting vine disease
for re-discovering old grapes and wines and setting out the blueprint for what has become the modern revival in German winemaking
It can also give pointers to other viticulture schools around the globe on how to prepare for and keep abreast of climate change
“The main aim of the school is to give more wine education to the winemakers and cellar masters of the future
To make progress through innovation,” explains Dr Dietmar Rupp
Because of its latitude the German wine industry has always had issues with disease and with the ripening of certain grapes
New varietals have been cross-bred at the viticulture school that have helped resist disease and a good deal of work is currently being done on combatting new climate-related threats like the Asian fruit fly
a fly that loves wet summer conditions and as a result devastated many crops in 2014
Climate change has also meant that varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot and Syrah are starting to grow better in Germany and meet the growing demand for international-style cuvées
The barrel room at viticulture school is full of magnificent barrels commemorating the men whose names were given to new cross-bred varietals
Cross-breeding is a large part of work they do here
Not just for disease-prevention but also to meet and feed changing consumer demand
The most popular rosé and sparkling wine of Württemberg both originated from this school
Poets and scholars from Schwaben and Franken have given their names to new bred varietals that have originated in the school which include Dornfelder and Kerner
the most successful new bred varietal of the Twentieth Century
Kerner is a cross between Riesling and Trollinger (the popular red grape of Württemberg) while Dornfelder is a cross between Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe
Kerner was certified as a new variety in 1969 while Dornfelder received its certification in 1984
250 litre barrels celebrate the men whose names have been given to these hybrids
On other bariques there are a plethora of different wines containing experimental clones and blends of cross-bred varietals
The influence of the viticulture school partly explains why the multitude of grape varieties in Germany are clones of clones
owner Barbara Singer needed a blackboard to explain her massive portfolio to me
especially in a day that had its first welcome drink at 9am
Back to viticulture school and in other rooms you find what you would get in any winery
except much of it in miniature – fermenting tanks that look like diving equipment and are stacked upon one another like the cells of a beehive
which changes colour at the touch of a button
to help the students play with the colour of their experiments
if it had a large map of the world at one end
could easily be the lair of a Bond villain
Attached to the school is a large commercial winery
that allows viticulture students to market and sell their wine
There was one I couldn’t help noticing that was arguably ‘trying to hard’ to be hip
In fact it would make the perfect wine for an English surfing team
the influence of the viticulture school goes far and wide
A large percentage of the winemakers I met on a tour of the Württemberg and Rheinhessen regions are former students and
clearly benefitted greatly from the technology on hand
As graduates they continue to benefit from information exchange with the school
helping them cope not only with setting up their own wineries but with the increasing need to change and meet the demands of the future

In a moving ceremony June 14 at Congregation Shirat Hayam in Swampsoctt
Swampscott High School 2008 graduate Elyse Knopf
was awarded the Rabbi Edgar and Yvonne Weinsberg Tikun Olam Award
The award was established in 2005 to honor Rabbi Edgar and Yvonne Weinsberg for their 21 years of service in this community
The award emphasizes the need for engaging in interfaith or intergroup endeavors as much as possible
Knopf was honored for being a top honors student
a tireless volunteer and for her leadership amongst her peers in the Jewish community and general community at large
Rabbi and Yvonne Weinsberg said they were “delighted to learn” that she was the recipient
“The areas of your life which shone most brightly in the Jewish community were your leadership skills and your caring for others,” they said
“Your volunteerism at the Jewish Rehabilitation Center was also a tremendous boon to the elders of the North Shore who reside there
organizing and arranging for various events
“For this and more we congratulate you and look forward to having your name inscribed as the third recipient on the annual Rabbi and Yvonne Weinberg Tikun Olam Award plaque.”
Elyse is the daughter of Edward and Diane Knopf
She will attend Washington University in the fall
There are numerous institutions that provide higher education on viticulture and winemaking
but very few are first-class wine producers per se
Prior to the destruction wreaked by the two World Wars
it was German-speaking Europe rather than the great U.S
that produced the most Nobel laureates in Chemistry
Signs of Germanic scientific dominance can still be seen in today’s vinous world
with Austria and Germany sharing between themselves three of the oldest research centres dedicated to viticulture and winemaking in Klosterneuburg
Established in 1868 as Königliche Weinbauschule (Royal Institute of Viticulture)
Staatliche Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt für Wein- und Obstbau Weinsberg (State Education and Research Institute for Viticulture and Pomology Weinsberg; abbreviated as LVWO) is the oldest of its kind in Germany
indeed predating the foundation of the country
Its winemaking body is Staatsweingut Weinsberg
a 40ha estate whose vinous portfolio is akin to proportional representation in parliament
with Riesling representing merely 20% of total hectarage
while possessing three Große Lage vineyards in Burg Wildeck
Gundelsheimer Himmelreich and Weinsberger Schemelsberg
The Chinese mind may find it difficult to imagine that government ownership and technological progress can be mentioned in one breath
but this is the birthplace of such world-renowned crossings as Acolon
Dornfelder (in honour of Immanuel Dornfeld
the Anglo-Saxon mind may refuse to believe that
rather than disrupting the omniscient market
state bureaucracy actually does not harm to an entity’s initiative and ingenuity
as Staatsweingut Weinsberg stays a member of Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter (VDP)
A visit to this world-class research centre is a sui generis experience
Rows after rows of clones and patches after patches of seedings are meticulously aligned in greenhouses and laboratories
each given a thoroughly systematic name comprising seemingly random letters and numerals
born WE70-281-35 and WE 70-77-4F respectively
Cabernet Cubin and Mitos are both crossings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Lemberger
There is not so much room for impressionism as austerity and exactness
each successful clone is the result of literally hundreds if not thousands of attempts
and that it is virtually unthinkable that a scientist would witness the complete cycle of a new variety within one’s lifetime
since it may take up to a century for fruits to bear
In addition to continually analysing and improving existing varieties
scientists at LVWO are constantly creating new varieties essential to ensure viticultural security in an increasingly homogenised world
The Irish Potato Famine from 1845 to 1849 and the Phylloxera Plague from the 1860s to 1890s are stark warnings against putting all the eggs in one baskets
even if the baskets are Riesling and Pinot Noir…

The OIO said it had approved 27 consents under the special forestry test in the year since it was introduced
A high ranking European official has bought a multi-million dollar Hawke's Bay sheep and beef farm to turn into forestry
Austrian count Johannes Trauttmansdorff-Weinsberg now owns four farms around NZ after recently purchasing up one sheep and beef farm in Wairoa and another in Gisborne
He paid $7.2m for just over 1000ha in Wairoa and intends to plant about 706ha as a commercial forest on Mangaaruhe Station and leave the rest as bush and shrubbery
The commercial forest is due to be harvested around the year 2046 and replanted following harvest
Many of the overseas sales have been approved under a new special forestry test
to smooth the way for increased forestry investment
But the count's move into Wairoa has some upset that the continuation of farm land being sold to forestry seems to be going ahead without delay
Wairoa mayor Craig Little told RNZ the latest sales showed the special forestry test had got "totally out of control" and the government was not taking community concerns seriously
"We were given promises and if it carries on it's going to be too late [to reverse]."
Of that "less than 20 per cent" of the 73,200ha sold was farmland slated for conversion
The OIO said it was "monitoring trends in forestry investments" and would carry out a mandatory review of the changes by October next year
But Little says that will be too late: "Do it now."
A joint venture was also part of the OIO announcement where Hawke's Bay trust Maungaharuru-Tangitū has purchased
with other overseas investors mainly from the US
arrangement is such that the hapū will maintain ownership and control over Esk Forest
September's OIO decisions also included the first "standing consent"
granted to Japanese-owned forestry company Pan Pac
The consent allows Pan Pac to make 25 transactions involving 20,000ha of land without seeking prior OIO approval and is valid until 2022
Associate Finance Minister David Clark and Land Information Minister Eugenie Sage signed off the consent
The Saturday closure comes amid a proposal to shut Napier Library for at least two years

An Austrian aristocrat has been given approval to buy another farm in Aotearoa and plant pine trees in it
The latest round of Overseas Investment Office (OIO) consents show Johannes Trauttmansdorff-Weinsberg has been given the green light to purchase the 445 hectare Te Maire Farm near Masterton
Just over 300 hectares of the farm will be planted in pine trees which will be harvested in 2048
Described as an experienced forestry investor by the OIO
Trauttmansdorff-Weinsberg purchased three farms in 2019 for conversion to forestry
he bought sheep and beef farms Bushgrove and Glentarn Stations in Masteron to convert into commercial pinus radiata operations
he bought sheep and beef farm Mangaaruhe Station in Wairoa for $7.2m and gained permission from the OIO to turn 706 hectares of the property into a commercial forest
That same month he purchased Karaka Station
a 373 hectare sheep and beef grazing property for $3.5m - 290 hectares of which was to be planted in commercial forest
These sales were all approved under the Special Forestry Test - which the government recently announced it plans to make changes to
the OIO also approved Trauttmansdorff-Weinsberg to buy 477 hectares of land in Taranaki which is already an established forestry operation
The government is planning to change rules which help foreign investors purchase farmland in New Zealand for forestry conversions
Wealthy European buyers have snapped up four more sheep and beef farms to convert to forestry
