They were rescued by two bystanders after spending a perilous amount of time in the freezing water The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. The men had been skating for about an hour and a half when the ice gave way beneath them A Dutch man onshore heard their cries for help and alerted rescue services he pushed a rowboat 200 meters across the ice toward the skaters enabling the men to pull themselves from the icy water Emergency responders treated the skaters for hypothermia at the scene Both men left after receiving medical care The Royal Dutch Skating Federation (KNSB) confirmed that the two individuals were not participants in the open Dutch Championship on natural ice which was held on the Weissensee that same day The Weissensee is a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts and serves as the venue for the Alternative Elfstedentocht a long-distance skating event modeled after the famed Dutch Elfstedentocht So popular is the TV drama about life in communist East Germany – which critics say provides the first sympathetic portrayal of the lives of East Germans since reunification 20 years ago – that many believe it will outperform American hit series Mad Men which opens on German television next month which is named after a district in the heart of the former East Berlin At its core are the Kupfers and the Hausmanns two warring families linked by an illicit love affair The Kupfers are a family of ambitious Stasi secret police officers The Hausmanns are a clan of feisty dissidents whose matriarch is Dunja despite his family's deep disapproval and their concerted efforts to separate the couple which is to be extended due to popular demand has been credited with bringing an authentic depiction of life in the German Democratic Republic to the nation's living rooms for the first time It comes two decades after German reunification – with the anniversary marked today across the country a series has finally arrived that gives some Ossis their dignity," wrote the august weekly Die Zeit using the once derogatory and now popular term to describe East Germans While both the writer and director were born in what was then West Germany and many were themselves the victims of state repression who plays Dunja and is best known as the mother in international hit film Goodbye Lenin! once by one of her best friends who worked as an informer Others in the cast spent time in Stasi prisons or fled to the west a publication with its roots in East Germany that continues to court readers from the former communist state called Weissensee a "journey back in time to the GDR of the 1980s" "While some who experienced the GDR and the Stasi dictatorship might argue they're laying it on too thick in some scenes… I'd say rather a bit of exaggeration than to ignore history altogether," wrote the magazine's critic Susi Groth The series coincides with renewed interest in the lives of Ossis and comes at a time when Germans are assessing the successes and failures of unification after more than 40 years of division This weekend, ceremonies and street parties will take place across the country to mark the event, while busts of the main political architects behind reunification – including former chancellor Helmut Kohl and former American president George Bush Snr – are to be unveiled. Last week the chancellor, Angela Merkel who spent the first 35 years of her life in the GDR revealed the struggle that she had adjusting to a reunified Germany in which she might have been expressing the thoughts of thousands of East Germans she admitted she still stockpiled food for fear of running short "I still buy something as soon as I see it It's a deep-seated habit stemming from the fact that in an economy where things were scarce you just used to get what you could when you could." in which Germans were asked whether they had grown together into one nation more than two-thirds said that the nation was still divided If patterns of consumer spending were seen as a measure of the success of unification president of the federal office of statistics "unification could be said to be almost perfect" He said a look into the nation's living rooms and kitchens showed that 16% of households in the western side of modern Germany own flatscreen televisions Mobile phones are owned by 86% in both east and west and MP3 players and dishwashers are owned by almost the same percentage in east and west But the wages of those living in the east are only three-quarters of the level earned in the west their life expectancy is below that of those in the west and almost twice as many rely on state benefits This is the archive of The Observer up until 21/04/2025 The Observer is now owned and operated by Tortoise Media This entry remains in the Atlas as a record of its history but it is no longer accessible to visitors Update as of June 2021: The site is closed Venturing inside is unsafe and is considered trespassing An empty, tumble-down, sprawling complex sits amidst handsome new apartment buildings in Berlin's Weissensee neighborhood Though an intrigued passerby probably wouldn't guess it this crumbling graffiti gallery was once a cutting-edge pediatric medical facility abruptly banished almost 20 years ago to a bizarre limbo that continues to this day Planning for the Weissensee Children's Hospital (Kinderkrankenhaus-Weißensee) began in 1908 undertaken in an effort to combat rising infant and child mortality rates it was the first municipal hospital of Prussia and incorporated novel concepts like a 2.8 hectare (6.9 acre) park surrounding the hospital and an onsite dairy that produced milk for the young patients their mothers and the surrounding neighborhood The hospital survived two World Wars and the Cold War, even being enlarged in 1987 when the East German government added a new wing The facility even survived German reunification for several years Empty since then, the buildings and grounds are protected as historic monuments under the care of the municipal government In 2005 the property was sold to a Russian investor and medical cooperative that proposed converting it into a new clinic After years passed without any construction or even basic maintenance at the site curious journalists found the new ownership led only to a sketchy location housing multiple shell corporations Further inquiries yielded a fantastical tale of Russian doctors who had discovered a method of curing cancer and AIDS with radio waves. The hapless spokesman associated with the bogus address claimed that this method had already cured many people in Russia as the patients they cured were all quickly killed thereafter by mismanagement by conventional doctors. local courts ordered the fraudulent Russian owner to return the property to the municipal property management authority The future of the former landmark children's hospital is as yet unclear Weissesee's abandoned children's hospital is frequented by homeless people looking for a place to sleep as well as graffiti artists who have used the site to create some astonishing street art. It also remains an attractive target for curious urban explorers Intrepid visitors should be very careful This ruins of an abandoned Victorian-era mental health facility which is the second-largest structure on the Maltese island of Comino An abandoned tuberculosis hospital moulders on into an uncertain future Ruins of a historic medical facility sits eerily by the water the first public health hospital in the U.S saw more than one million immigrants from around the world it was a crucial center of mental health treatment and also the source of many local legends Small teepee-like houses built for TB patients have become sheds Graffiti-covered ruins that were once part of a farm owned by a mental hospital Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Staten Island AdvanceBusinessman made study of military history  Family PhotoWalter Weissensee 2001STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE — Former Staten Islander Walter Weissensee Weissensee was the proprietor of the West End Printing Corp. Students are also free to choose the topics of their theses graduates' design collections consist of about 6 outfits for the bachelor's degree and final year students also write a theory paper Selmer emphasises that "the students set individual priorities So the final projects include everything from a bag collection to embroidery work to a freely draped collection "Our job is to recognise the students' potential to encourage it and to equip them with as many tools as possible to help them succeed professionally in the end," the professor says all students get the opportunity to showcase the results of their creative work The school holds a big fashion show in which all classes participate Weissensee graduates do not just present their final collections but it also gives them the opportunity to showcase their other work two students from Weissensee Art Academy won prizes at the European Fashion Award Fash in the Bachelor category Idan Yoav took first place with his graduation collection "Nomads for love" His fellow student Lihi Mende ended up in second place with her collection "The Space" a portfolio is key when applying to the Weissensee Art Academy The application process starts with an online application selected applicants are asked to submit a portfolio About 50 students go on to the next application round during which they have to take an aptitude test Those who are among the lucky chosen ones get to come to the art academy for the aptitude test - or rather the aptitude week "every day one or two new tasks await the applicants," Selmer explains each person who is invited has a personal interview with the application committee Selmer cites interest as the most important quality that applicants should bring with them: "I think that is exactly the motor that helps to make the best use of this study programme" The Bachelor of Fashion Design "is intended to enable students to pursue a qualified professional activity in the various areas of fashion and to develop their own creative position and design identity The degree programme promotes independent designer personalities according to design social and ecological criteria," says the website of the art academy we offer the students intensive professional input to accompany the projects delving into topics such as sustainability and practising different types of design and working in teams," says Selmer we give students the freedom to bring individual topics and provide a breeding ground for their own ideas to grow." all the doors of the fashion world are open to the graduates many continue their studies directly in the Master's programme especially if they plan to found their own labels later Brands founded by Weißensee Art Academy alumni include Michael Sontag and Perret Schaad Master's student Laura Gerte has also already ventured into the German fashion industry and showed her collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin 2022 in the German capital "I think what they all have in common is a great curiosity and a strong will And maybe also a hope to do something better," Selmer concludes .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Staten Island Advance StaffSTATEN ISLAND a retired bank teller and former Prince's Bay resident who was the loving matriarch of three generations of family died Tuesday in Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center she graduated from Walton High School in her native borough Weissensee moved to Prince's Bay in 1954 and lived there until she entered the nursing home in 2014 Weissensee worked as a bank teller for 20 years at Chase Manhattan Bank on the Island and in Manhattan She expressed her innate creativity with quilting doting on her grandchildren and being in her family's company She was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C The funeral will be Saturday from the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home The film unfolds with a streak of whimsical creative touches that confirm its maker’s genuine intrigue with Berlin’s Weissensee Jewish Cemetery deeply considering what death means to the living and the relationships many endeavor to continue beyond its veil Underground touches on some of those same nerves and there’s no doubt Wauer cares about the feelings and questions evoked by Weissensee (essentially healthy forest located in the middle of a thriving city in which more than 100,000 departed lay six feet under while their tombstones similarly wither and fall apart) but the film fails to probe these matters with sufficient depth Wauer has a strong eye for natural poetry (striking compositions of vegetation-engulfed tombstones abound), implicit meaning (time-lapse sequences of the tombstones through days, nights, and seasons are exquisitely understated), and irony (the cemetery borders a brewery, bringing to mind the great Sunday mass/Moe’s Tavern gag from The Simpsons Movie) her film would seem to be a great inquiry into life the film includes some achingly intimate testimonies of Jewish perseverance (and the impact of survivor’s guilt) while the stuff with Rabbi William Wolff is pure gold Pockets of insight dot the proceedings without much in the way of a cumulative effect and it’s regretful when the film essentially turns into little more than a good-mannered advertisement for the cemetery than any one film could ever hope to contain ultimately rushed visit isn’t nearly enough to do it an even rudimentary justice Some films deserve to run more than 90 minutes Rob Humanick is the projection manager at the Mahoning Thick ice coats the beards of competitors during a speed skating marathon on a frozen lake in Austria. The cold weather means that spray kicked up by other competitors freezes as they whizz round the Weissensee (White Lake) in the Carinthian village of Techendorf. The village is hosting a traditional Dutch series of speed skating events for both professionals and amateurs with some 5,000 participants, until 31 January. The major event is an Austrian alternative to the Elfstedentocht, a 200km race that is held on frozen canals in the Netherlands when conditions allow. It only takes place if the ice on the canals is at least 15cm thick along the entire course. The last tours were held in 1985, 1986 and 1997. © Copyright IBTimes 2025. BERLIN – A woman who had a pencil lodged in her head for 55 years after a childhood accident has finally had most of it removed which should end her chronic headaches and nosebleeds Margaret Wegner was 4 when she fell while carrying the 3.15-inch pencil which went through her cheek and into her brain “It bored right through the skin and disappeared into my head,” Wegner told Germany’s best-selling newspaper the technology did not exist to safely remove the pencil so Wegner had to live with it – and the ensuing chronic headaches and nosebleeds – for the next 5 1/2decades nose and throat specialist at Berlin’s Park-Klinik Weissensee was able to identify the exact location of the pencil so that he could determine the risks of removing it The operation was difficult because of the way the pencil had shifted as Wegner grew Behrbohm told the Associated Press on Tuesday “This was something unique because the trauma was so old,” said Behrbohm who has also done brain surgery to remove bullets from shooting victims Although a piece of the pencil about four-fifths of an inch long could not be removed the wife of German boxing coach Ulli Wegner will no longer have the headaches and nosebleeds “She shouldn’t suffer any longer,” he said Give directly to The Spokesman-Review's Northwest Passages community forums series -- which helps to offset the costs of several reporter and editor positions at the newspaper -- by using the easy options below Gifts processed in this system are tax deductible Get breaking news delivered to your inbox as it happens © Copyright 2025, The Spokesman-Review | Community Guidelines | Terms of Service | Privacy Policy | Copyright Policy Rather than being a white void interrupting the rolling green and grey of the mountains what looks like a flock of starlings switches back and forth en masse across the ice it becomes clear: it's a group of ice skaters winding around a marked-out course because they are being tailed by several cars This weekend you may have booked an hour on one of the many temporary ice rinks opening across the UK over the Christmas period the city lit up around you - but the reality is you're more like to be shuffling in circles without the space to pick up enough speed to feel stable or exhilarated If you want to understand what outdoor ice skating is really all about The lake is segmented into rinks for curling cross-country ski trails and even an ice golf course - open all season Mountains rise on every side of the glacial lake Evergreen forest runs to the shore at some spots Yet this mountain scene - a perfect Austrian Christmas card - has its origins in the Dutch lowlands Ice skating in Holland is integral to the culture but global warming now means the locals rarely get a chance to skate their canals a 200km tour through 11 towns in the north of the country during winters that are cold enough to freeze the canals it has been exported and Dutch skaters now come to Austria for their ice fix Norbert Jank (who advised the Bond producers when they came to shoot a car chase on the frozen lake for The Living Daylights) smoothing paths over the ice with his car-mounted snowplough One of the winding routes is the official 16.7km course for the week-long festival along with many unofficial participants soaking up the atmosphere and having fun doing shorter distances on the practice paths the skinsuit-clad stragglers still out on the ice are not paying any attention to the scenery they are determined to finish the 12 circuits required to make up the 200km They detach their skates and hobble into the warm tent to grab a beer and a roast chicken with friends - exhausted but content swapping stories of falls and skating through the "wall" It clearly means a lot to them to have achieved the epic distance - one participant says it is part of what it means to be Dutch it's a 50km race instead of a marathon tour - it's time for the pros It is like the Tour de France on ice: huddles of amateur skaters gather as spectators on a bend trying to slipstream each other; they even have musette food bags like cyclists I visit one of the sports shops that hire out skates and it becomes clear they are different to the knackered boot'n'blade combos you get in British rinks with good ankle support and a cycling cleat on the sole Once you reach the jetties that access the ice the near foot-long blade stays in contact with the ice If you're used to the manoeuvrability of a hockey or figure skate it's easy to keep catching the blade on the ice or your other foot And it's a good idea to get some practice at home as your feet ache like hell the first time (200km would be unimaginable) But once you've picked up speed and built a rhythm You can get to the point where you aren't thinking about the skating and are just soaking up tranquility Although the tracks are busy near the town (near the 14th-century bridge a medieval divider between the lake's 1.6km western end and 10km main section) skate to the western edge and it's remarkably peaceful - as satisfying as finding a remote ski piste all for yourself The prepared paths curve attractively around the ice pop off their blades and enjoy a well-earned hot chocolate or espresso gazing up at the peaks of the Carinthian Alps and out across the ice There is a certain wistfulness to their gaze Perhaps they have seen the Eismeister's data on the ice Apart from one very cold winter four years ago the Weissensee freezes shallower and for a shorter period than it did in the past with ice around 40cm thick from December to March little-known ski resort in British Columbia is a wonderful place for a family holiday Apex has a 1km illuminated adventure skating loop that runs from the edge of the village into a forest it winds round the back of some pretty wooden houses where the resort can organise a bonfire with marshmallows and hot chocolate Combine a trip to Apex with the larger family resort which has a rink where pick-up hockey games (the equivalent of a park kickaround) are played most nights Ski Dream (0845 277 3333, skidream.com) offers a 10-day two-centre holiday from £1,150 adults this colourful resort - a former mining town with Victorian architecture - has some challenging terrain an exciting tubing hill and the pretty Brewers Pond local kids perform a figure skating display Ski Independence (0845 310 3030, ski-i.com) has a week from £750 The purpose-built Colorado resort has the largest Zamboni-maintained outdoor rink (a Zamboni is the machine used on rinks that waters they run figure skating and hockey clinics (for dates Crystal (0871 231 5659, crystalski.co.uk) offers a week in Keystone Condos from £749 The Austrian resort is by the side of a lake special areas are cleared and polished for skating Erna Low (0845 863 0525, ernalow.co.uk) offers an apartment from £597 including Eurotunnel crossing for up to four people As well as the attractively designed outdoor Eisarena Ludains ice rink (which has some indoor restaurants around it) the glamorous Swiss resort can offer skating on the lake if you're lucky to be there between a freeze and a snowfall Momentum Travel (020-7371 9111, momentum.uk.com) has a week at the Hotel Steffani from £1,350;
