Olivia Samson and Maddux Eckerling from the Nevada County Jewish Community Center created a company they call U26 meaning it is run by and for people under the age of 26 years Pooling resources with other local non-profits they created the Fresher Collectives who are committed to lifting youth out of food insecurity and poverty Chef Sean Sullivan coaches Layla Brown in the industrial kitchen located at Bright Futures for Youth in Grass Valley Sullivan volunteers his time while running his own catering business Fresher Futures interns like Brown will cater a feast on Thursday Jack Greenway observes the knife skills of Chef Eric Ove kitchen and nutrition program manager at Bright Futures for Youth as they prepare chicken tortilla soup from fresh ingredients Greenway says he came into the program through Connecting Point and is happy that he can provide meals for others in need Chef Eric Ove and Layla Brown appreciate the opportunity to prepare meals for populations who struggle with food insecurities while at the same time learning skills to support themselves in the future A program that is changing lives in Nevada County called Fresher Futures is training young adults who have struggled to live independently homelessness and dependence on government services This culinary program is supported by Connecting Point a non-profit organization located at 208 Sutton Way Meals are prepared in advance and ready to eat by individuals who have experienced hardship themselves “I want to be independent from my family through the culinary training program and to build my skills “I also like the idea that I’m helping people who are hungry and having a hard time.” The new program is a collaboration between Bright Futures for Youth the Interfaith Food Ministry and a group of young people from the Nevada County Jewish Community Center (NCJCC) The teens from the NCJCC brought the agencies together and used a business model found to be successful in the Sacramento area by Rabbi Dave Azen meaning it is run by individuals under the age of 26 years old The Youth Chef Corps is led by Head Chef Sean Sullivan who volunteers to train Tyson Garcia Layla Brown and Justice Modica as part of a four-month pilot program Sullivan also runs a catering business called Stone Soup Catering “The program has changed my life because I like to see people happy when we provide the meals,” Modica said “I was homeless once myself so I know how it feels.” Too many young people eat fast food or processed food from gas stations Having healthier options can be especially hard on homeless people experiencing food insecurities Last week Fresher Futures was approved for the use of CalFresh food stamps to allow meal purchases for people with disabilities those 60 years or older or homeless individuals  “I got involved because I needed a job right away My biggest achievement is that now I’m eating healthier and feeling better,” Garcia said “I like to give back to the community because I’ve been less fortunate myself.” Unhoused individuals struggle with access to kitchen facilities and eat the cheapest and/or easiest meal options that can contribute to diet-related diseases are who Fresher Futures wants to support “Many youth struggle on the weekends or when school is closed,” Azen said who don’t qualify for Meals on Wheels are who we can feed.” Learning about nutrition and meal planning so that food is not wasted is helpful Questioning the ingredients of the food we purchase and eat is something Modica said has changed her habits “We are all certified food handlers now which will make it easier to find work in the future.” On certain days the trainees from Fresher Futures cook in the industrial kitchen with Chef Eric Ove As the interns complete their training they will be catering a community meal in collaboration with the business model of the U26 leaders and the NCJCC The event will include music and a feast prepared by the young adults enrolled in the Fresher Futures culinary training program on Thursday Tickets for the community meal event on April 6 can be purchased online at Nevada County Jewish Community Center website Each trainee was introduced to Fresher Futures through Connecting Point the public agency that supports individuals by securing housing or job opportunities Shout out to Courtney Palencia for helping us To contact about community for Ari and Erinn Weiswasser Stellar Catering and (50 percent of) Park Avenue Catering It's all about community for Ari and Erinn Weiswasser Stellar Catering and now partners in Park Avenue Catering with Bruce Reizenman they say the community comes together to support one another the Weiswassers — along with their daughters Noa (turning 9 in April) and twins Haley and Riley (turning 7 this month) — ran their portable pizza oven outside the restaurant to serve the community a hot lunch for three days in a row Their pizzas are favorites around the Valley and beyond It's something about the dough and the crust and the modern rustic style of cooking They use the wood oven for their signature vegetables dishes so there is something for virtually everyone on the short seasonally-driven menus that vary from week to week This same theme of community is reflected in their menus as they source and serve up the fruits of the Valley from lettuces to boutique eggplant and beyond to the wine list where they can source their lettuces and eggs and so much more Ari succinctly describes the food at the Glen Ellen Star as 'plant based and vegetable forward.' And it's true that the local produce really shines Erinn Benziger grew up in Glen Ellen living on the family vineyard and winery property She attended Dunbar Elementary School followed by Altimira Middle School For high school she attended Ursuline in Santa Rosa Erinn went on to college at the University of Colorado-Boulder he went on to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park New York While Ari and Erinn were friends in college a romantic connection wasn't forged until years later when Ari's roommate in Manhattan was looking for a way to get into the wine business and Erinn was looking for a place to live in Manhattan moving from sales at the winery to working for their broker in New York to learn more about the industry The two became roommates and were still just friends for six months until it turned into something more at the end of 2005 After living in both Philadelphia and New York City in 2010 they decided to move back to Sonoma when Erinn was pregnant with their first daughter The transition from New York City to Glen Ellen was initially tough for Ari They lived with Erinn's parents at the estate and he had moved without a job Erinn was still the East Coast sales manager for the winery and was traveling two weeks of every month working harvests for Benziger and Imagery mostly at night mountain biking during the day and finally staging for both Meadowood and the French Laundry He decided to take the one at the French Laundry where he worked for almost two years until they bought the site of the Glen Ellen Star and turned it into what it is today Erinn and Ari have different strengths that they each bring to the businesses and the staff; Erinn focuses mostly on the private events and all the communication that goes into that They each manage the restaurant a few nights a week Although with the growth of the catering side of things Ari met Bruce Reizenman of Park Avenue Catering back in 2007 because it was the caterer they chose for their own wedding They actually partnered together with Stellar Catering which was launched in 2015 after a request from John Lasseter to cater his 60th birthday party Glen Ellen Catering couldn't handle that volume but Reizenman stepped in with his knack for logistics and the Stellar Catering business was launched with the Glen Ellen Star signature style of food and the business savvy of Park Avenue As the requests for events has grown in scope and volume over the years the idea of partnering with the larger Park Avenue catering business grew more appealing and in January of this year Currently Ari spends two days a week at the restaurant and five days a week at the office As the season picks up the schedule might change but they're still figuring it out and finding their way 'I really try to compartmentalize,' he said we're still doing everything we want to be doing I may have to re-evaluate and revise after the busy season where his parents remodeled their house entirely around the kitchen the transition between wine to food made perfect sense because 'I think it comes down to the ability of the chef or the winemaker to be able to tell a story and how they come together.' The Weiswassers are definitely succeeding at bringing it all together And Ari said that during this time of sheltering in place that community support for the restaurant has been 'fantastic' and that they are taking this time to make modest improvements to the exterior of the restaurant to make room for some outdoor dining spaces in preparation for the inevitable limited-capacity openings 'It's been an emotional roller coaster,' he said we're still feeling socially connected through virtual cocktail hours and social distance lawn parties.'
