MISHAWAKA — Smokestack Brew co-owner Kevin James didn’t expect to make a “windfall” from carryout orders after Gov
Eric Holcomb ordered Indiana’s restaurants to cease dine-service March 16 in an attempt to stem the spread of COVID-19
But after a section of bricks fell the night of March 19 from the historic smokestack that gives his business in the 100 Center its name
even that revenue stream has disappeared for him and his employees
“At least we would have had carryout and delivery,” James said Monday and added that Smokestack Brew also was involved with Larry Powell’s Michiana Bar Aid music-based online fundraiser for area servers and bartenders
and it’s transitioned into people playing from their houses.”
He said he and co-owner Troy Kirts plan to re-open Smokestack Brew as soon as they can and that they will then move ahead with a benefit for their employees
James didn’t have any information about what caused the bricks to fall
the extent of the damage or when repairs would begin
The hole is 12 or 13 bricks across at its widest
based on counting the row below the damage
although the smokestack appears to taper outward in the area effected
so it’s possible it’s missing a few more bricks at its widest point
“It looks massive from the ground,” James said about hole at the top of the smokestack
“… I’ve been joking around that it’s big enough to drive a truck through.”
Barricades have been in place since Friday to cordon off the area around the smokestack and Smokestack Brew
a restaurant and night club that opened under different ownership in March 2015
a smattering of bricks and other debris remained on the pavement Monday
As far as he could tell when he visited the site Friday
“Nothing has fallen from the walls or the ceiling that I could see,” he said
“… The inside of the smokestack is where the majority of the damage is.”
The building’s owner did not respond to multiple messages left for him Monday and Tuesday (James and a former owner of Smokestack Brew said Joseph Grabill owns the building
Joseph County Assessor’s property card lists the owner as Wennigsen LLC)
But Mishawaka Building Commissioner Bo Hunt did praise the building’s owner Monday for taking immediate action after the damage was discovered Friday morning
who viewed the damage after it was reported
said he believed a contractor was scheduled to inspect the smokestack Monday
“It had some deteriorating blocks from lack of maintenance over the years,” he said
“and that maintenance was going to be taken care of as soon as they could get a contractor on site.”
The smokestack is one of the oldest commercial structures in Mishawaka
Margaret Fosmoe wrote that John Wagner began operating a brewery in 1853 at the site of what is now the 100 Center
Adolph Kamm and Clemens Dick purchased it in 1870
Dick sold his interest to Kamm and Kamm’s brother-in-law
where Smokestack Brew is located adjacent to the smokestack
