City Partners in 2019 included a master plan by architectural firm Gensler for 1.4 million square feet of mixed-use space but was formally abandoned in 2020 A recent announcement from the Atlanta city government has once again sparked conversation around the redevelopment of a once-vibrant mall in Atlanta’s historic West End neighborhood 1.7 million-square-foot (158,000 sq m) mixed-use community with retail and residential uses including a large component of affordable housing Atlanta’s West End neighborhood has a rich history with origins as a frontier outpost in the 1830s The area is home to four historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) that make up the Atlanta University Center (AUC)—Clark Atlanta University on a prime site along the southern side of Interstate 20 The mall’s prime location near MARTA’s West End Station and the Beltline’s Westside trail has attracted some robust redevelopment interest in recent years but none of the plans has panned out thus far a $400 million redevelopment proposal by Elevator City Partners included a master plan by architectural firm Gensler for 1.4 million square feet (130,000 sq m) of mixed-use space with public green spaces That project was formally abandoned in 2020 New York–based powerhouse developer Tishman Speyer then contracted to purchase the property amid plans to invest $300 million in the redevelopment but ultimately decided in August 2021 not to proceed The latest proposal marks BRP’s second attempt at redeveloping the mall New York–based Prusik Group and BRP canceled a purchase contract on the property Their plans Fhad called for splitting the property into four blocks; creating two new streets; and adding as much as 1.5 million square feet (139,000 sq m) of new construction and up to 250,000 square feet (23,225 sq m) of necessity-based retail Atlanta’s West End neighborhood has a rich history and is home to four historically Black colleges and universities that make up the Atlanta University Center The current plan is to include the mall redevelopment as part of three projects that will add nearly 350 affordable housing units for Atlanta residents with each project making at least 20 percent of its units affordable for those who earn 50 percent of area median income (AMI) and another 10 percent for those who earn up to 80 percent of AMI “This is a long-awaited new era for the West End,” said Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens in a statement “This is not just a redevelopment of the Mall West End—this is fulfilling a commitment to a community Our administration is dedicated to creating affordable housing and vibrant business spaces that respect and preserve the rich legacy of this historic neighborhood we will work to ensure [that] the heart and soul of the West End continues to thrive under our stewardship.” Plans call for the redeveloped mall to feature 125,000 square feet (11,150 sq m) of retail with a much-needed grocery store and local boutiques; 900 mixed-income rental units 20 percent affordable at 50 percent of AMI and 10 percent at 80 percent of AMI for 271 total affordable housing units; 150 beds of student housing to appeal to nearby schools; a 150-room hotel; 12,000 square feet (1,115 sq m) of medical office space; and community amenities including a public green space and it oversees a commercial property portfolio totaling more than 15.7 million square feet (1.46 million sq m) “We are honored to partner with the City of Atlanta and the West End community on this transformative project,” said Meredith Marshall cofounder and managing partner of BRP via a statement focuses on the development and repositioning of retail real estate assets throughout the East Coast region the West End development represents a unique opportunity to revitalize and reinvest in the West End community and equitable neighborhood,” says John Majors Mayor Dickens’ Affordable Housing Strike Force stemmed from the AUDC in 2023 with a mission to incentivize the development of mixed-income communities that include affordable housing units the notion of redeveloping the site has a lot of merit to many locals “It is good to see someone getting involved and this time around it seems as though it has more legs,” says Jonathan Koes but [one] really focused on building affordable housing so I think that is going to be the main component that moves this [project] forward Market fundamentals and economics over the last couple of years are really what led to those [earlier] proposals’ struggling You need to have buy-in from the community and I think that is definitely something that this proposal has put at the forefront.” an associate with CBRE’s retail services group in Atlanta “We are excited to see West End getting redeveloped and look forward to seeing this project come to fruition This market has been historically underserved from a retail standpoint and revitalizing the mall will bring cool and exciting new tenants to the area West End is close to all major submarkets in Atlanta and we’re optimistic that great retail will follow after the redevelopment.” Others are more skeptical. “It’s a great piece of land encumbered by an old mall,” says George Banks, founder of Revel an Atlanta-based retail and mixed-use development firm Banks was an original investor in the Krog Street Market which opened in 2014 on Atlanta’s east side as the first food hall in the Southeast given the costs to build and the rents you can get The city of Atlanta is partnering with New York-based developers BRP Companies and Prusik Group to transform the 1970s-vintage Mall West End into a $450 million 1.7-million-square-foot mixed-use community Observers agree that the redevelopment of the Mall West End with more retail options will reshape the entire area “West End has strong density but not enough retail,” says Duque “This market is also a food desert and lacks service-based tenants would be thrilled to see some of these retail needs [addressed].” The mall redevelopment is in its early stages of planning with construction expected to begin in 2025 and other stakeholders through various channels and foster an inclusive and collaborative redevelopment approach that reflects the community’s aspirations,” Mayor Dickens says in a statement The popularity of a converted 22-acre (9 ha) warehouse district called Lee + White—which opened in 2019 just three blocks south of the Mall West End—provided a potential catalyst to the mall redevelopment and became a model for what is possible in the neighborhood and MDH Partners purchased Lee + White in 2019 the mixed-use property had already become a popular destination for the breweries and retailers that opened in the first phase of the project The ownership partners have continued the redevelopment of the former “Warehouse Row” with the addition of a 19-vendor food hall and a central gathering space called the Great Lawn An eclectic mix of eateries opened in the food hall and Lee + White also emerged as a business hub by attracting high-tech innovators Carbice Inc. as well as a mix of other businesses and services including a new Grady Health neighborhood center The popularity of a converted warehouse district called Lee + White which opened in 2019 just three blocks south of the Mall West End provided a potential catalyst to the mall redevelopment and became a model for what is possible in the neighborhood “The opening of the Atlanta Beltline Westside trail was a game-changer for the West End neighborhood and this project,” says Evan Ziegler president of investments at Ackerman & Co Lee + White has a half mile of Beltline frontage and four direct access points to the trail “We knew the opening of the trail in this area would also provide a significant boost to development and help make our project more appealing to a wide range of tenants and visitors,” Ziegler says “We also knew that we could add value to our investment while serving the needs of the surrounding community by diversifying the mix of users at Lee + White.” Development momentum is building to the south and west of downtown Atlanta which includes such projects as Murphy Crossing “When you talk to residents [of] the West End you find that they’re excited to have a project like Lee + White in their neighborhood,” says Wiener has been Two years ago, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) awarded our transportation department the “Reconnecting Communities” grant The $1 million grant gave the city an opportunity to study the I-77 interchanges as well as West Fifth Street and West Trade Street The study focused on reconnecting West End to Uptown and exploring ways to improve accessibility Burton acknowledged this project is about balance. He explained I-77 is an important thoroughfare, so they have to consider the needs of the interstate along with the work they are trying to accomplish. The grant’s goal is to develop a 10% design concept—not a fully engineered plan, but a well-thought-out vision. This project is the next step in advancing the Five Points Forward Plan an initiative designed to shape the future of the area based on community input  Neighboring Concepts CEO Cathy Morrison answer a resident's questions about a proposal The planning process is highly focused on community engagement Morrison stressed the importance of “buy-in” from residents  “We want the community to feel ownership,” she explained “This isn’t something happening to them—it’s happening with them.” community members had the opportunity to review five proposed concepts for the interchange and surrounding streets Community feedback will help narrow the options down to two and ultimately to one final concept for implementation Residents heard elevator pitches about each design plan People asked questions and the teams who created the work answered Person-to-person conversation was prevalent throughout the entire two-day event Sticky notes were passed out to give neighbors the chance to submit feedback immediately “A lot of work went into this event to inform the community to give them the chance to weigh,” Burton commented Teams are dedicated to studying streetcars ensuring the new design meets the needs of all residents Burton and Morrison said building upon what already exists is key “We’re thinking beyond cars,” Burton said “There are so many ways people move through the West End We need to enhance the assets we already have and explore new connections.” These two don’t want you to reduce this study to just roads though The concept also touches on reconnection within the community The study will look at open spaces like parks finding ways to integrate them into the vision for the area affordable and mixed-income housing is at the top of the list to enhance the area which is another factor being considered in the planning process sustainable community where residents benefit from new investments rather than being displaced by them  “This project isn’t successful unless we talk to the community,” Morrison stated "That’s how we ensure we’re making the right plan." “This is an amazing opportunity to rethink an important part of our city and how we can better connect West End to Uptown,” Burton remarked and a commitment to a plan that considers all the project aims to ensure that the West End’s future is shaped by the people who call it home While the design charrettes have already passed public engagement is being planned over the next year Anyone interested in keeping up with future events, especially if you live in the West End, can follow announcements on the Reconnecting the West End page Dancing Astronaut presents: IDs Only Episode 1 featuring Westend is now live on YouTube Featured image: Josiah Categories: A high-energy club weapon with peak-time intensity the new single is out now on John Summit's Experts Only imprint Years of collaborative DJ sets and shared studio time have forged a creative bond between the two producers and a full-circle moment has now arrived with "Drum Death," Westend’s new single released today on Summit's Experts Only imprint Earlier this week, Summit reflected on his career crediting Westend as one of the key figures who encouraged him to take music seriously Their history spans from B2Bs played for a handful of people to a breakout Dirtybird collaboration in 2019 "Drum Death" is another standout moment for Westend, who was named to the EDM.com Class of 2023 and continues to be a force in shaping the future of house music percolating basslines make for a peak-time powerhouse Its entrancing vocal chops and revving low-end create a hypnotic push-and-pull making it the kind of record that grips a dancefloor May 2, 2025Listen to "Drum Death" below and find the new single on streaming platforms here the Insomniac Records release is club-ready the track emerges as a commanding techno anthem after earning its stripes as one of the most coveted unreleased IDs in recent memory whose Experts Only label released "Killa," called the new track "a monster tune." London shows and musicals to book for in London’s theatres in 2025 London’s theatre scene is the most exciting in the world: perfectly balanced between the glossy musical theatre of Broadway and the experimentalism of Europe it’s flavoured by the British preference for new writing and love of William Shakespeare but there really is something for everyone Between the showtunes of the West End and the constant pipeline of new writing from the subsidised sector with well over 100 theatres and over venues playing host to everything from classic revivals to cutting-edge immersive work This rolling list is constantly updated to share the best of what’s coming up and currently booking: these choices aren’t the be-all and end-all of great theatre in 2025 the biggest and splashiest shows coming up alongside intriguing looking smaller projects.   both to avoid sellouts but to get the cheaper tickets that initially go on sale for most shows but tend to be snapped up months before they actually open Please note that the prices quoted are the ‘official’ prices when the shows go on sale – with West End shows in particular it can unfortunately be the case that if they sell well Want to see if these shows live up to the hype? After debuting last year in New York, Stephen Sondheim’s final musical transfers to the National Theatre. It’s a darkly comic adaptation of two films by Luis Buñuel: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel. Where is it? National Theatre.  Why book? There’s no denying that part of the appeal is to be part of a little piece of history – the first UK audience to the last musical by Stephen Sondheim. But also it’s crucial to point out that he was the single greatest composer of musicals who has ever lived, by all accounts Here We Are is pretty damn good. It certainly has a cast to die for, including Rory Kinnear, Jane Krakowski and Martha Plimpton.  Photo: Neal Street ProductionsWhat is it? Big names Jack Lowden and Martin Freeman star as a pair of recovering alcoholics in the latest from caustic Northern Irish playwright David Ireland. Why go? Ireland is a writer on the up, with his short, wildly un-PC dark comedies finding increasingly large audiences. I’s always a pleasure to see Freeman. But there’s no denying that ther stager return of Lowden – flush from the success of Slow Horses – is the biggest draw in an enticing show. Photo: Shakespeare’s GlobeWhat is it? Arthur Miller’s allegorical masterpiece about the Salem witch trials becomes the first revival by a playwright other than Shakespeare to be staged at the Globe’s open air theatre. Where is it? Shakespeare’s Globe.  Why go? Miller’s momentous play never dims in power or relevance. But there’s something very special about the idea of the Globe’s iconic space now finding room for the classics, and the sprawling, Shakespearean epic – sent just a few decades after the Bard’s death – should be the perfect starting point. Drew McOnie’s first season in charge of the Open Air Theatre gets off with a bang via the UK premiere for smash UK musical Shucked Where is it? Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.  Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally’s multi Tony-nominated 2022 musical comedy is funny as hell It concerns a comically isolated rural farming community which must send representatives to the big city after their corn crop starts to fail US director Jack O’Brien will restage his smash show with a new A transfer for last summer’s superb Open Air Theatre production of Bock & Stein’s classic play about life and change in the old shtetl It’s a wonderful production from Jordan Fein and a perfect balance between the musical’s jollier beginnings and much darker ending What is it? The hottest Broadway show of the last couple of years – and most Tony nominated play ever – David Adjmi’s Stereophonic is a fictionalised account of the making of Fleetwood Mac’s landmark Rumours album.   Where is it? Duke of York’s Theatre.  Why go? It’s got to be worth it for the hype alone with several of the Broadway cast transferring along with the show praising the delicately worked account of a band at a creative peak but personal low trying to struggle through the recording process with original songs provided by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler 4 out of 5 starsRecommendedPhoto: Bridge TheatreWhat is it It’s the return of the Nicholas Hytner’s sublime immersive 2019 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream The original production was simply a total joy – for those with ‘immersive’ tickets it was a big queer rave in the woods that you were invited to There’s some fun textual innovation: Hytner has basically swapped the lines of fairy antagonists Oberon and Titania But the main deal here are the good – nay Why go? London Road has to be seen – and heard – to be believed, as nothing even remotely like it has come along before or since. An ultimately deeply unsettling exploration of the nature of community via choral song, it’s beautiful and disturbing in equal measure, and almost certainly not what you are expecting. Photo: Phil HillWhat is it? Disney’s new stage musical, an adaptation of its Greek myth-themed 1997 film, with Luke Brady starring as the muscular demigod. Where is it? Theatre Royal Drury Lane.  How much is it? £29.50-£158.50. Why go? The original film is obscure-ish by Disney standards, but much loved by those who know. And while it might seem like a slightly random choice of adaptation, word from Germany – where this production debuted – is very good. the entire original team of cast and creatives of Sarah Kane’s final play 4.48 Psychosis reunite to restage one the mostly bleakly powerful plays in British theatre history.  Where is it? Royal Court Theatre.  Sold out but all Monday tickets go on sale on the morning of performance The play is a strange and haunting masterpiece and there’s undeniably a bragging rights element to bagging tickets to a show where demand will vastly outstrip supply But there is definitely the hope that hugely talented director James Macdonald will find some new magic here and perhaps banish the shadow of Kane’s suicide which hung heavy over the original production Why go? Co-written with Tim Rice, Evita was always Webber’s best musical, and Lloyd’s tough, witty take preserved its grit and romance while cutting out the twee stuff. Also there’s the small matter of Zegler: one of the hottest stars on the planet, this should be an explosive UK stage debut.  Photo: National TheatreWhat is it? The last Lyttelton theatre show to be programmed by Rufus Norris prior to his departure looks like a good one: following the Jodie Comer-fuelled West End smash Prima Facie, writer Susie Miller and director Justin Martin join forces with another big star for follow-up Inter Alia. Why go? Rosamund Pike has had an excellent few years on screen with the likes of Saltburn and The Wheel of Time. Now it’s long past time we get to see her on stage again: it will be  thrill to see her make her National Theatre debut to star as Jessica Parks, a maverick high court judge who precariously balances her work and her home life.  Photo: Felicity McCabeWhat is it? Less than a year after making his Doctor Who-era stage return in the NT’s sublime The Importance of Being Earnest, Ncuti Gatwa is back at it again. He’ll star as the legendary playwright Christopher Marlowe opposite Edward Bluemel as William Shakespeare; the year is 1591 and in a paranoid Elizabethan England the two are collaborating on Henry VI together with a mix of flirtation and suspcion. Why book? Earnest was great, but it was a big ensemble play – if you want to see Gatwa do some proper leading man stuff, this is your chance at last. And it’s staged by the RSC, ie it’ll be classy as hell. Okay, it does sound a bit like slash fiction, penned by an American playwright barely known in this country. But it’s also an RSC production, directed by the company’s co-leader Daniel Evans – if that’s not a mark of quality assurance, then what is? Image: Feast CreativeWhat is it? This classic 1947 musical romance from My Fair Lady writers Lerner & Loewe hasn’t been staged in the UK in over three decades. Now Drew McOnie directs it as the centrepiece to his first season in charge of the OAT. Why go? The songs are sumptuous – hopefully top Scots playwright Rona Munro’s dramatically rewritten book has taken the cringe out of this story of two American pals who get lost in Scotland and discover a magical vanishing village.  Photo: Guy J SandersWhat is it? Katie Mitchell’s second play for the David Byrne-era Royal Court threatens makes last year’s non-linear poetry adaptation Bluets look positively commerical. A collaboration between the legendary avant-garde director, playwright Nina Segal and sound artist Melanie Wilson, Cow | Deer is a wordless work about a day in the life of a cow and a deer Why book? Big in Europe, Katie Mitchell is probably the most revered experimental director in the world today. The cliche is that the British are too boring to get her and that she has to go abroad to find an audience – but this is truly as wild as theatre gets, and it’s coming to London only. Book because you’re a Mitchell-head or simply because you’re curious. Heck, book because you like cows. Photo: National TheatreWhat is it? This is a bold opener for Indhu Rubasingham’s first season in charge at the National Theatre: first time playwright (though he’s got decent pedigree as an actor) Nima Taleghani offers up what sounds like a racously modern – and probably quite foul-mouthed – adaptation of Euripides’s shockingly violent Ancient Greek tragedy. Why book? It’s a bit of a gamble – Taleghani is the first ever playwright to make his debut in the huge Olivier – but the audacity is presumably part of the point, plus there are some very reliable names to steady it. Rubasingham herself will direct the show, which has a cast including James McArdle, Clare Perkins and Ukweli Roach. Photo: National TheatreWhat is it? It’s been 15 years since the National Theatre staged Shakespeare’s masterpiece. But new NT boss Indhu Rubasingham isn’t messing around, and her deputy Robert Hastie’s production is her very first piece of programming in the Lyttelton. Hiran Abeysekera – best known for his Olivier-winning turn in the Hastie-directed Life of Pi – will take on the mantle of Shakespeare’s Great Dane. Why book? Abeysekera is an unknown as a Shakespearean and the only advance vibes we’re getting from the production are ‘playful’. But it’s the greatest play ever written at the country’s most important theatre – if it’s not great everyone should hang their heads. Image: Guy J SandersWhat is it? Marianne Elliott (War Horse, Curious Incident) directs Nick Payne’s first Royal Court play since his smash hit Constellations, as Nicola Walker stars as a woman trapped in a haze of grief in the seven years after her son goes missing. Why book? Frankly the talent involved is ridiculous and it has all the makings of a Royal Court smash hit, in the same way that last year’s similarly starry Giant did. And if you think it sounds a bit conventional, worry not – apparently in Payne’s play all seven years of grief happen simultaneously, which sounds pretty mind-blowing. Image: Troubadour Canary Wharf TheatreWhat is it? After a decade of false starts, a stage adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s dystopian YA classic The Hunger Games is coming to London in October, opening at a brand new in-the-round theatre in Canary Wharf. Where is it? Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre. How much is it? £tbc – tickets on sale March 27. Why book? We’re not going to lie: the odds are most audience members will be fans of the books. Unlike recent stage outings for Harry Potter, Stranger Things and the TBC Game of Thrones play, this isn’t a new story: it’s the first bool adapted for stage. But despair not, theatre nerds: it has a thrilling creative team led by top playwright Conor McPherson – you can probably expect a darker, grungier take than the films. After a run that spanned more than 50 years West End’s shopping mall is slated to close by the end of January According to developers The Prusik Group and BRP Companies the demolition and construction phase is on the horizon for Mall West End a suburban-style shopping enclave and longtime community cornerstone that’s struggled in recent years with vacancies like many traditional malls The mall is set to be replaced in coming years with a multifaceted project called One West End which will include some 1.7 million square feet of development and cost in the ballpark of $450 million The initial phase is scheduled to debut in about three years Before the mall locks up for good this month, developers say four longtime tenants are being relocated to a temporary onsite location at 850 Oak St that will allow them to continue operating throughout the entirety of One West End’s development Those businesses—apparel store The Burning Sands and American Deli—will be allowed to open in fresh permanent retail spaces once development is complete a Planet Fitness location situated near the middle of the 12-acre site will continue operating where it stands during phase one of construction both New York City-based real estate companies closed on Mall West End’s property in October for an undisclosed price.  Those firms are redeveloping the retail center in partnership with the City of Atlanta a local nonprofit entity that aims to develop underused public land into mixed-income housing replacing a commercial district and numerous West End houses One West End’s first components are scheduled to open in 2028 leveraging the site’s proximity to downtown Developers have said upcoming rounds of community input will help shape what the project becomes Key facets of the redevelopment are set to include roughly 125,000 square feet of retail with a grocery store At least 10,000 square feet of commercial space that leases at affordable rates will also be in the mix for qualified local small businesses along with 12,000 square feet of medical office space Other sections would see a 150-room hotel built plus roughly 900 units of mixed-income rental housing 70 percent of those rentals would be reserved as workforce housing while 20 percent would rent at 50 percent of the area median income or less Elsewhere would be student housing and communal perks that include bike parking Three earlier visions for a mall site revival in West End fell apart including a slightly smaller proposal (1.5 million square feet of total development) from The Prusik Group and BRP The development team has vowed to contribute at least $500,000 to a fund that will help qualifying commercial tenants with rent credits and tenant improvement allowances Funding for the deal includes $19 million in acquisition financing provided by Merchants Capital plus a $5 million acquisition loan from Atlanta Urban Development and another $5 million from Beltline coffers Twitter / Facebook/and now: Instagram   • West End news, discussion (Urbanize Atlanta) and personality Oscar Levant will play the Barbican Theatre this summer seven-week run at the Barbican Theatre beginning July 31 and continuing through September 21 The production will mark Hayes' West End debut which takes place backstage and on set of a 1958 episode of the Jack Paar Tonight Show with Levant picked as the headlining guest made its world premiere in 2022 at Chicago's Goodman Theatre before bowing on Broadway in 2023; both starred Hayes as Levant Hayes won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for the performance Lisa Peterson will return to direct after staging the Broadway bow, with further casting and creative team to be announced. terms of large-scale redevelopment plans that have popped up but ultimately burst in recent years The City of Atlanta has officially acquired the 12-acre Mall West End site in partnership with Atlanta Beltline Inc a local nonprofit entity with a goal of developing underused public land into mixed-income housing City officials revealed today the 1970s mall’s mixed-use redevelopment will be led by both residential housing developer BRP Companies and commercial development firm The Prusik Group had unveiled plans in 2022 and worked with neighborhood leaders for turning the West End economic and cultural hub into a new-construction blend of hundreds of housing units and commercial spaces But by October last year, those plans were declared D.O.A City leaders now predict Mall West End’s site will see 1.7 million square feet of development in coming years City officials didn’t disclose the purchase price for the mall property in an announcement today and public sales records aren’t yet available We’ve asked for clarity on sales details and will update this post with any additional information that comes Buying the mall is considered the first step toward transforming the property into a mixed-use and mixed-income development with a goal of creating affordable housing and spaces for legacy small businesses by way of “inclusive commercial space for a diverse business community,” per the city announcement It’s expected to take multiple years to fully pull off “This is a long-awaited new era for the West End,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a statement. “This is not just a redevelopment of the Mall West End—this is fulfilling a commitment to a community.” The sale marks "the moment the West End community—and all of District 4—have been working towards for years,” added Atlanta City Councilmember Jason Dozier The city and its partners plan to gather input from legacy business owners and other stakeholders before moving forward with transforming the mall property Construction at Mall West End is slated to begin in 2025 with the first phase being delivered sometime in 2026 Mall West End’s ownership group has been exploring options to offload the property for several years. The mall is dotted with vacancies but counts Planet Fitness and Atlanta University Center within a quick jaunt of downtown But each of three earlier visions fell apart The Prusik Group and BRP terminated a contract for a mall redevelopment deal Tentative plans had called for splitting the property into four blocks and creating two new streets allowing for better access and flow to buildings with a maximum height of a few stories—unlike the glassy towers in previous proposals the site could have seen up to 1.5 million square feet of new construction with between 650 and 900 mixed-income apartments and up to 250,000 square feet of “necessity-based retail.” Another Mall West End redevelopment deal on a much larger scale—with an estimated pre-inflation price tag of $400 forget all about Qdoba it represents either the easiest or most difficult parking lot to enter and exit between West Meade and downtown depending on which way you’re traveling and which way you want to go But I promise that the Northern Mexico-inspired menu at Little Rey will make navigating that left turn worth your while I really enjoyed my first visit to Little Rey in Atlanta’s Piedmont Heights neighborhood The restaurant seems to specialize in everything it’s pollo al carbon — or chicken cooked over charcoal The sweet smell of smoke emanated from the dining room and wood was stacked everywhere to keep the fires burning It was like visiting the best cookout ever with an unbelievable variety of dishes on offer The morning meal menu also includes hotcakes and huevos rancheros available on Saturday and Sunday mornings The lunch and dinner menu revolves around grilled chicken available as half or full birds with accompaniments of your choice of corn or flour tortillas The chicken also appears as filling for quesadillas smoked and served with a salsa matcha of deep-fried peanuts and chiles alongside a jalapeño ranch dressing Other taco choices include pork or steak off the grill along with traditional shrimp or carnitas tacos on soft corn tortillas Among the margarita offerings is red grapefruit along with a nonalcoholic menu that goes deep with smile-inducing options like Fanta orange Jarritos tamarind and an obscure century-old Mexican treat I can’t think of a better dessert option than some nice soft-serve While the official opening date is subject to
