Hello from “Heathers!” We write this letter to you as the Co-Directors (Diana Khong ’22 and Gwen Phagnasay Le ’22) and Dramaturg (Kyla Figueroa ’24) of Ram’s Head Theatrical Society’s live digital production of “Heathers: The Musical.” This column’s title (“Dear Diary”) alludes to the first line of the show as jaded protagonist Veronica Sawyer reflects on the hell that is her conformist high school
This space will similarly serve as a place for us to ruminate as we attempt to put on the first official queer re-imagining of “Heathers: The Musical” — rewritten for stage by the playwrights with a love story between two women as its center — and what that ultimately means for us as future theatermakers
“Heathers” began as a cult classic 1989 film that was later adapted into a rock musical by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy
a dark satirical take on the cultural norms of high school
She aspires to leave her small suburban town for something bigger
better and far away from the soul-crushing toxicity of her school and its narcissistic mean girls
hypermasculine jocks and perpetual bigotry.
the directors and our producer Sierra Porter ’22 aimed to put on this show with a cast of predominantly people of color
Those feelings of alienation and non-conformance that plague Veronica also ring true for the many marginalized students who exist on Stanford’s campus
we’re also not strangers to theater historically being an exclusive art form that withholds opportunities from communities of color and low-income people
Exposure to theater from an early age is often a matter of luck and area code
Cultivating an intentional community geared around collective growth and learning is our priority.
this story became so much closer to us than we could’ve ever imagined
We first considered gender-bending the character of JD
during the audition process when Emily Saletan ’24 — who we eventually decided to cast — brought up trying out for JD as a female actor
saw so much possibility in what this story could represent.
We eventually decided to write a letter to the playwrights of the show
asking for their blessing to change JD’s pronouns
They not only provided their approval but rewrote the show to intentionally center a queer relationship
With that change comes so much nuance — JD becomes not only a casualty of non-conformity but homophobic violence
We watch as bystanders as her vengeance takes on a cruel irony in songs like “My Dead Gay Son.”
Our Creative Team (including our stage manager Yannie ’23
vocal director Zoey Hu ’24 and choreographer Jess Fry ’21) became invested in depicting a complex and multidimensional relationship between two queer women
the relationship undoubtedly is a harmful one
but we saw possibilities in what conversations this show could spark in talking about harm and abuse in love — even queer love — and nurturing actors to depict that dynamic
and we could not be more thankful to the community of art makers who made it possible
making theater has been an incredible challenge but a worthy one
Despite our distance from one another as a theater community separated by COVID
we’ve still found ways to come together and kindle new friendships
In future articles for “Dear Diary,” we’ll be breaking down love and desire at Stanford
breaking open white American theater and more
We hope that you join us in experiencing “Heathers!” Come see “Heathers: The Musical” live on Thursday May 13 & Friday May 14 at 7PM PT and Saturday May 15 at 2PM PT. Get your tickets at musical.stanford.edu

Salado head coach Tom Westerberg announced his retirement from coaching on Wednesday after a 37-year career that included leading Allen High School to four state championships in 2008
Westerberg has a career record of 191-50 with stops at Allen
He was also an assistant coach for Garland High’s 1998 state championship team under current THSCA Executive Director Joe Martin.
“I’m 37 years into this and coming home to Salado was great," Westerberg said
"I wanted to make it work and we just didn’t have as much success as I’d like so I thought it was time to go into a different direction start a new chapter."
who was Allen’s offensive coordinator
was promoted to head coach in 2004 and immediately had great success at the booming DFW suburb leading the Eagles to the state semifinals in his second year in 2006
Allen remained among the elites in DFW before in 2012 taking off as a national power by winning three straight state titles led by legendary QB Kyler Murray
Westerberg remained at Allen one more season in 2015 where he posted a 14-1 mark and led the Eagles to the state semifinals before moving on to Barbers Hill in the Houston area.
Westerberg helped the Eagles emerge as a power in the area with 2019 being the high-water mark as BHHS posted an 11-2 mark
He led the Eagles to the playoffs in four of his five seasons.
In 2021 Westerberg gave athletic administration a shot as he spent the year as the Hays Consolidated ISD Athletic Director before jumping back into coaching in 2022 at his alma mater Salado.
“I always wanted this job," he said
"I had applied three other times to be the head coach here
it didn’t work out back then. The last time I applied was in 2000
my career went a different direction and it all worked out
We love this place and we are retiring here
so now it’s time for me to be a fan in the stands go watch my son (Kyle Westerberg head coach at Whitehouse) and some of my former assistants and players coach."
Expect Salado ISD athletic director Paul Baird to get the job posted quickly as the Eagles move into the offseason.
“The relationships are the best part of the business," Westerberg said
"Every job I’ve ever had as a head coach and as an assistant coach I’ve loved coming to work every day doing this. I’ll miss that part the most."

from gorgeous weather to The Masters golf tournament
All that and more found its way onto chic chapeaus and sky-high hats at Mad Hatter's 2025
themed "Celebrating Spring in the South." The epic fundraising luncheon sponsored by the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum assists with the development
and Women's Council president Therese Rourk welcomed fashionably dressed guests to Ginsburg Plaza at the Dallas Arboretum on April 17
Kristyn Potter (@acaeventdesigns) captured the flirty, floral fashions with live sketches, while a lively and talented trio comprised of students from Lake Highlands High School Jazz Ensemble kept spirits high.
The Mad Hatter's extensive silent auction drew plenty of interest, with restaurant gift cards, beauty treatments, jewelry, and travel all on offer.
Those interested in competing for blue ribbons paraded their expertly crafted millinery before judges Amanda Shufeldt, Anne Stodghill, Ezé Azenabor-Grembowski, Kameron Westcott, Sharon Lee Clark, and John Clutts, before the jazz trio led a vibrant second line into Rosine Hall for the fashion show.

Presented by NorthPark Center and produced by Jan Strimple, with NBC 5 anchor Laura Harris serving as emcee, the fresh fashions were as light as a spring breeze. Looks were from Etro, Maje, Me + Em, Nordstrom, Sandro, Scanlan Theodore, and St. John, with beauty by Glossier and jewelry from Eiseman Jewels.
The hat winners then got their own turn on the runway:

Guests were then invited to sit down to a lovely lunch of chilled avocado soup and mixed greens topped with sous-vide chicken, marinated tenderloin, and a fried green tomato, all drizzled with peach-hot honey dressing. A Bananas Foster tart proved a sweet ending to a positively enchanting day at the Dallas Arboretum.

Sheriff: Texas teen kills mom, 2 neighbors, then himselfShreveport TimesMcALLEN, Texas — A 19-year-old killed his mother and two neighbors before turning his gun on himself in a shooting that brought SWAT and various emergency vehicles to a rural area in Texas, authorities said Sunday.
Uvalde County Sheriff Charlie Mendeke said Dylan Westerburg gunned down his mother Friday afternoon in their home near Uvalde, about 85 miles west of San Antonio. He then went next door and killed two brothers, Arthur and Phinny Norton, Mendeke said.
Mendeke said investigators haven't determined a clear motive for the shootings. Westerburg lived with his mother in a small cabin about 20 yards from the Nortons' mobile home on the brothers' property.
Phinny Norton, 60, had some "sort of romantic relationship" with Westerburg's mother, 42-year-old Jennifer Diane Jacques, Mendeke said. Deputies had been called out to the property in the past because of domestic disputes but "nothing violent," Mendeke said.
Authorities arrived at the scene after a teenage witness called them. The teenage boy was with Arthur Norton, 58, when they saw shotgun shells and broken glass as they approached the Nortons' mobile home, Mendeke said.
"Mr. Norton enters the house," Mendeke said. "The kid who was with him hears and sees a gun blast and sees Mr. Norton fall to the floor" before running to call authorities.
When officers arrived they heard another gunshot. Not knowing whether there were multiple gunmen or whether the gunman was dead, authorities surrounded the homes and began evacuating people nearby.
It was during that search that they found Jacques' body. The family's dog had also been killed.
Mendeke said he called in about 50 to 60 officers from different agencies as well as a Texas Department of Public Safety SWAT team out of caution. Authorities closed the road leading to the property and they stayed there overnight.
"I didn't know how many shooters I had in the Norton residence when I found the mother," he said. "You're looking at farm- and ranchland. You could get into a dangerous situation."
The SWAT team finally entered the Nortons' mobile home on Saturday afternoon and found the Norton brothers and Westerburg dead inside. Mendeke said Westerburg had shot himself in the head.

"The Hustle" sees Hathaway and Wilson portray Josephine Chesterfield and Penny Rust
Josephine spends more time with her nose in the air and speaking in a Julie Andrews-esque voice than engaging in real conversations with those around here
while the occasionally loud-mouthed Penny allows her inner-self to bounce between inappropriate assertiveness and nagging insecurities
Some of the humor in "The Hustle" feels shoehorned into the story — the scene where Penny attempts to get mentally and physically fit enough to join Josephine in her grand schemes is a bit amateurish

"The Hustle" doesn't make a completely clean getaway as a movie
it's hilarious high jinks that will temporarily rob the viewer of his or her ability to suppress laughter

Cinematographer Francis Kenny takes a studied approach to doing things different for Michael Lehmann’s dark high school comedy
This article was originally published in AC
and is accented by the imaginative cinematography of Francis Kenny
Kenny has an impressive background in documentary filmmaking
His credits as director of photography include He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin’
which won a 1984 Academy Award for feature length documentary
a historical/documentary scheduled to premiere at the 1989 presidential inauguration
Kenny has made his mark in the music video field
Joe Jackson’s “Right and Wrong” and Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” among his credits
Kenny also gained experience as a fashion photographer for Ralph Lauren and Norma Kamali
The President’s House is a feature length film
Kenny recalls the shoot: “It was a great honor to be chosen to photograph the White House
including the First Family’s living quarters
the actual handwritten Gettysburg address is in the Lincoln bedroom
buzzes with the excitement of being the information and decision making center of the world
You work in awe of the amount of power these people have over our lives
and intercut them with re-creations from the past — period scenes
it was difficult to photograph such a ‘white’ building in the bright and hazy days of summer in Washington
We tried to save all the exteriors for magic hour
we recreated the storm that saved the White House after the British set it on fire during the war of 1812
and dozens of PA’s pulling tree branches and bushes with monofilament
After it was all over we had turned the north lawn into a swamp
Kenny recently brought his varied background to the feature film arena
Heathers is his third feature as director of photography
He discusses his reasons for moving into the feature field: “It seems all roads lead to features
It was amazing to me that shooting a film that won an Academy Award and an Emmy didn’t amount to a hill of beans in terms of having my work recognized
But if I told them that I worked on Desperately Seeking Susan or Making Mr
there are very distinct divisions between the categories of work
and many people in the industry only recognize their own category
you have to apply your experience from all of these categories
There are times when too much ‘set-up’ will kill a performance
apply what you have learned from documentaries and just shoot it.”
Heathers takes place in and around the fictitious Westerburg High School
gives some indication of the tongue-in-cheek approach of the film
a departure from the nostalgic and innocent tone of many high school films
To augment the modern attitudes of the 16-year-old adults who populate Heathers
Kenny avoids any “sepia-toned remembrance images.”
the lighting and camera work is very straightforward,” says Kenny
“The key lights were always done in pastels
I tried to create a setting of a very safe world
as the story begins to twist into the bizarre murders and suicides
The hues change gradually from pastel to primary
a room’s ambience would be done in Lee #181 (Congo Blue) but defined with edge light in an opposing color like pure white
The fill light decreases and the angle of the key becomes lower
creating longer shadows with very deep blacks
The emotional value of a scene is determined by how colors would relate to each other
As the darker side of the characters is revealed
“Some of the characters — the adults — are done in brighter tones
because in the story they don’t carry much character
the adults have their neurotic view of the world
and they don’t understand these deep feelings and thoughts
The teachers and parents are done in 18mm close-ups
They come across almost like the Federal Express commercials
because that's the structure of black comedy.”
Kenny allowed the movement of the actors to determine the movement of the camera
a technique he refers to as “organic movement.” Lenses were chosen according to the characters
The girls would always be shot with longer lenses like a 50mm or 85mm
and Kenny and his crew took great pains to ensure that all close-ups and their reverses were equally matched in terms of lens and distance
and Clairmont Supa Frost filters (0 and 0 +)
I really love the BL but I wish they could just make the mags quieter,” says Kenny
and found that the Supa Frosts were preferable for several reasons
The only problem with a Supa Frost filter is that if it gets scratched
I used the new Rosco black scrim on the windows
because it cuts the light a full three stops
it doesn’t rattle in the wind like acrylic gel
which is something a production manager can relate to.”
Kenny used more than 100,000’ of Kodak’s new 5297 film stock for Heathers
“I think it’s one of the the best products they’ve ever come out with,” he says
“It gives the HMI a full-bodied look that only the arc light used to give
It has extremely fine grain and a true ASA of 250
We had many interior daylight situations where the 5297 was perfect — offices
I would key with something other than florescent overheads (chroma 50’s)
which would be used to key through windows
We would bounce with a corrected HMI par to fill
and usually end up shooting at around a T4
and for all the night work and tungsten interiors I used Fuji 8514
but found after extensive testing that the Fuji film was of finer grain and handled the under and over exposures better
It was a little more pastel than the Kodak
but just in terms of seeing into the darkness it wins by a half stop
It also handled a three stop over exposure on windows better than Kodak
We used Deluxe for the lab and averaged around 110 total points on the printing lights.”
Kenny and director Michael Lehmann were able to execute a detailed storyboard
and camera operator Mitch Dubin on equal terms for working out the structure of the shot
and feels that the strong director-operator relationship only made his job easier
He recalls the first day: “We only did nine set-ups
We had two 20x’s and two 12x’s along with 12K’s for fill
and we tore a silk and bent a Matthews stand
So we were behind schedule half a day already
if you shoot a bad scene or have a bad day
They were willing to give any idea a chance
and that’s very important to the success of this film.”
Kenny created excitement with unusual camera movement
Occasionally Kenny used two heads to help achieve the desired effect
the jocks of the school [played by Lance Fenton and Patrick Labyorteaux] are lured to a forest clearing by the promise of a romantic rendezvous
Veronica (Ryder) was about to pick up a gun and shoot one of the jocks,” he recalls
“We used a Sachtler fluid head on top of a Mini-Worrall geared head
We started the shot on an extreme ‘dutch tilt’ angle
When the camera began to dolly in rapidly towards the actress
the first assistant would begin to turn the Mini-Worrall head to make the horizon level
“The scenes in the woods required a dawn feeling
but in real time required several days to shoot,” Kenny continues
the cops come in and there’s kind of a wacky chase scene
Most of this scene was shot on an ATV (all terrain vehicle) with a Steadicam
it’s fun to think up these wild shots (overheads and intervalometer dolly shots)
Not everything went so smoothly on the set of Heathers
Kenny encountered a baffling problem while shooting at the Corvallis High School [now Bridges Academy
the crew had constructed a bedroom for the scene
which called for a dying girl to crash through a glass coffee table
Kenny recalls the day: “In Heather Chandler’s room
We pulled the roof off and double silked the entire ceiling
We went in with one big overhead block light and keyed smaller HMI’s through the windows
just one big ambient light on top with the key coming in through the window
and we began to get a density shift over a period of 15-30 seconds
where the film actually changed exposure a whole stop
It was impossible to see with the naked eye
and came up with the suggestion that I was riding aperture
We joked with the first assistant that he had accidentally connected his focus wheel to the aperture
But we got this slow wave of exposure shift — it would start getting a little brighter
and after about 15 to 30 seconds it would recede
No one could see this until it became apparent in the high speed screening the next morning at the lab
My conclusion is that it must have been an old bulb on the large ambient HMI which couldn’t handle the frequency shift as well as the other HMI’s used in the same scene
So it turned into a major problem and we had to reshoot.”
working with young actors can make scheduling difficult
and limitations on the number of hours a minor can work on a set
where a master scene required lighting a cow pasture through a dense forest
After the crew used this huge setup for one scene
they had to lower the condors to get crew members down
set up for a reverse close-up before losing Miss Ryder to her schedule
and then relight the giant master to finish the scene
“It was absolutely insane,” laughs Kenny “If we knew we only had Winona for another 20 minutes
known on the set as ‘Winonamania.’ The entire set would explode into action in order to accomplish these shots before we lost her.”
is scheduled for release in November [1988]
The film was written by Daniel Waters and produced by Denise Di Novi
You can have the most beautiful images in the world but if the script is bad
Heathers will probably be a controversial film
and these high school kids literally get away with murder in the story
and there are always people who will miss the point
and well-written film and I was very lucky to be given the opportunity to work on it.”
Kenny was invited to become a member of the ASC in 1996
His other feature credits include Campus Man
He was honored with the ASC Presidents Award in 2012

The world of musicals has a knack for creating male characters we hate to love
giving us eye candy and attitude all in one
But what is it about them that we can’t get enough of
It could be that they have a softer side; take Danny Zuko (Grease) for instance
The T Birds leader had built his reputation as a womanizing “dude” before he met sweet naive Sandy
And so began his tug of war between being with her and acting up for his gang
even if that meant treating her badly in the process
That is until he decided enough was enough
ditched the leathers and “geeked up” for her
*enter Sandra Dee in tight leather trousers and red heels.* It could be argued that Rizzo’s relationship with Kiniki was more toxic (erm that milkshake throwing scene anyone?!)
We move from Rydell High to Westerburg where we meet Jason Dean (Heathers The Musical)
It’s no secret that there are a lot of terrible people in this school
but JD had a very warped sense of justice (i.e Murder!) Initially it was driven by his anger towards his father
but his motivations gradually moved to his love of Veronica Sawyer
his psychotic ways span increasingly out of control
he decided to try and blow them and all of Westerburg to kingdom come
But seeing the damage he’d done after a violent showdown with Veronica
Whilst there’s no excuse for the heinous things that JD’s done
He realised violence and murder doesn’t solve anything
Another bad boy who had his views warped was The Phantom of The Opera
His obsession with Christine became extremely unhealthy
due to his aggressive and controlling behaviour
After a series of murders and a near disaster with a chandelier
the Phantom realised he’s blown his chances at real love
ultimately releasing Christine from his clutches
Phantom eventually worked out he was in the wrong
This adds to the tragedy of the storys’ end
and makes us sympathise with his character in spite of everything
Whilst some bad boys in musicals aren’t destined to have happy endings
the way they look back on their actions and redeem themselves in some way gives them their anti -hero titles
whilst this won’t happen in real life ( in song!)

Practicing law has been a family tradition for local attorney Sam Price
Not only did his grandfather practice law in the Fenton Building back in the early 1900s
but his dad and uncle followed suit after World War II
after more than 20 years in the former Key Bank building
as part of the Price Flowers Malin & Westerburg law firm
Price said he’s more confident than ever that his family’s calling to serve others will continue forward
his law firm will officially merge with Lundberg Law Offices
announced their retirement — leaving the number of personnel in his office short
”We wanted to stay in downtown Jamestown … so we started talking to (Dana A
Lundberg of Lundberg Law Offices) about the possibility of getting together and it worked out well,” Price said
”It gives us the opportunity to have a little more resources for our clients.”
Lundberg said he has long respected Price and his law firm
calling the merger a great “benefit” for current and future clients
”Sam and I have been on the opposite sides of one another on quite a few transactions … and we do similar work in that regard for businesses
corporations and real estate,” Lundberg said
It’s not so much about expanding into a new area that we’ve never covered before
It’s more being able to combine our resources for continuing the same type of work that we do.”
The new “merged” law firm will be called Lundberg Price
four being in active day-to-day practice and four as counsels
”It’s really nice to continue the practice and see the firm move forward,” Price said
”This was a nice opportunity for longevity and to continue to help the clients who have known us over the years.”

A budding badminton star from Thornaby who hopes to represent Britain in the Olympics one day has received support from housing developer Keepmoat Homes.
Jack Westerburg is currently competing nationally in various tournaments across the country and hopes that the £500 donated by Keepmoat will help him reach the next round in the competition.
The 17-year-old approached the company for sponsorship after he moved into a Keepmoat home on the Mandale Park development two years ago with his father.
“I am hoping to really progress this season and this sponsorship will help me along the way,” said Jack who is currently ranked 11th in the country for his age group.
Training for several hours every day, on and off court, Jack has also been balancing his sporting commitments with the Art, History, English and Computer Science AS Levels he is taking at Conyers Sixth Form in Yarm.
Jack added: “It is incredibly hard to balance training and college work, but my trainer thinks I have what it takes to go all of the way to the top. This money will help me pay for almost a month’s worth of coaching, which will prepare me for the challenging tournaments of next season.”
Ian Prescott, Land & Partnerships Director for Keepmoat, said: “We met Jack when he successfully applied for a sportsmanship fund we had set up with Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and other partners. When we discovered that he actually lives in a new Keepmoat home at Mandale Park, we were keen to offer additional help. His enthusiasm and talent were immediately obvious.”
Keepmoat has just released a new phase of two and three bedroom homes at its Mandale Park development, offering a range of different styles ideal for first time buyers, young professionals and families looking to get a foot on the property ladder.
Under the government’s Help to Buy scheme, prices range from £81,596 for a two bedroom property to £111,996 for a three bedroom home.
The Help to Buy scheme offers buyers who have saved a 5% deposit the chance to take advantage of a five-year interest free loan covering 20% of the value of the property. The remaining 75% of the property’s value will be funded through a mortgage, which Keepmoat can help buyers to arrange.
For more information on Keepmoat’s Mandale Park, please visit their three stunning show homes, off Orkney Way, Thornaby, TS17 8GE between 10.00am and 5.00pm Thursday to Monday. Alternatively, please call Keepmoat on 01642 606 964 or visit www.keepmoat.com.

and we are reminded of how she’s a cheerleader

Heathers was initially a flop at the box office, earning only $1.1 million during its American theatrical run in 1988
and this black comedy centering on a popular clique of Ohio high school students eventually became an extremely popular cult classic that helped launch the careers of several of its stars—including Winona Ryder
Here's what the original stars have been up to over the years
and the formerly unpopular and brainy Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) is their newest member
and particularly cruel to many of their classmates
When Veronica decides she's had it with their behavior
starts shaking things up among the social circles at Westerburg
Veronica finds herself infatuated with him and inadvertently drawn into his plans—until she realizes just how dark they are
Along with her appearance as Lydia Deetz in 1988's Beetlejuice, Ryder's role as Veronica in Heathers helped launch her to superstardom. She's since gone on to appear in a number of acclaimed films
Ryder has enjoyed a career resurgence with her role as Joyce Bowers in the Netflix original series Stranger Things
and she's slated to star alongside Keanu Reeves in the upcoming rom-com Destination Wedding
Along with Winona Ryder and Shannen Doherty, Christian Slater's career path in Hollywood took a distinct upswing following his starring role in Heathers
After attracting attention playing the charismatic
who moves to Westerburg following his mother's suicide and uses some extremely violent methods to deal with the crew of popular students who run the school
Slater went on to play similarly troubled characters in movies like 1990's Young Guns II and Pump Up the Volume
He soon achieved superstardom with parts in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Slater has primarily booked supporting film roles and focused on TV work
You may have spotted him in The West Wing or remember him as Alex Donovan in the ABC crime drama The Forgotten
He's also done quite a bit of voicework in recent years
His most recent project is the popular USA thriller series Mr
in which he has played the title character since 2015
on which she agreed to appear as a "pivotal
Heather McNamara (Lisanne Falk) is probably the "nicest" of the three Heathers that run Westerburg High
although she does go along with much of the bullying that Heathers Chandler and Duke initiate against the unpopular students at their school
her social status and position on the cheerleading team hide her own internal struggles and timid nature
When McNamara reveals on a call-in radio show that she's battling depression
Heather Duke relentlessly bullies her the next day at school
McNamara tries to commit suicide in the school bathroom
but Veronica manages to stop her from going through with it
Her last appearance in a feature-length film came in the 1998 crime drama Shattered Image
alongside Anne Parillaud and William Baldwin
While the trio of Heathers (plus Veronica) sit atop the social pyramid at Westerburg High
there are also a number of other "popular" students at the school
and leads the Westerburg High football team as their quarterback
Kurt often plays along with the Heathers' cruel teasing
He later starts a sexual rumor about Veronica in order to ruin her reputation
Fenton graduated from UCLA in 1988 before attending the Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles
jock Ram Sweeney (Patrick Labyorteaux) is one of the top dogs at Westerburg High School
He helps spread the rumors about Veronica in order to ruin her reputation
convinces Veronica to get revenge by luring Kurt and Ram to a secluded spot under the pretense that she'll "make the rumors true"—then J.D
tricks the slightly naïve Veronica into shooting them with what he says are special "non-fatal" bullets
stages the scene to look like a suicide pact between secret lovers
Along with his long-running stint as Andrew 'Andy' Garvey on The Little House on the Prairie, Patrick Labyorteaux's part as Ram remains one of his most recognizable roles, although he's gone on to appear in dozens of films and television shows since
Labyorteaux has voiced a number of animated characters—such as Flash Thompson in the Spider-Man series from 1995 to 1998
Labyorteaux has also tried his hand behind the scenes; between 2012-2015
he produced the Nick at Nite series See Dad Run
Before Veronica Sawyer joined the Heathers
she was one of the "unpopulars" in Westerburg
and her childhood best friend was Betty Finn (Renée Estevez)
Veronica has fallen out of touch with Betty—although it appears the two still remain friendly and amiable when they do cross paths
like when Veronica comes over to Betty's house following Heather Chandler's death
We can only hope that after the end of Heathers when Veronica becomes the "new sheriff in town," Betty is one of her deputies
For Renée Estevez, acting runs in the family: she's the daughter of actor Martin Sheen, and the sister of actors Emilio Estevez, Ramon Estevez, and Charlie Sheen. Her part as Betty Finn in Heathers was her first major film role, but it certainly wouldn't be her last. Since then, Estevez has gone on to appear in many more movies and television shows
You may remember her from The West Wing—she played Nancy
an office assistant to President Josiah Bartlet (played by her real-life father Martin Sheen) for the show's entire seven-season run
Estevez has turned her attention to writing; she wrote several episodes of her brother Charlie Sheen's series Anger Management in 2013 and 2014
While the teachers of Westerburg High are mostly background characters in Heathers
one stands out for her eccentricity and her actual interest in the students' well-being: Ms
Westerburg's caring guidance counselor is often made fun of by the students—who call her "Miss Phlegm"—and derided by her colleagues for her hippy-dippy ways
After the second "suicide" strikes their school
Pauline has decided she's done taking guff from the other teachers and lashes out at them for trying to play "another round of 'Let's Laugh at the Hippie.'" Later
she leads the student body in a grief-sharing session in the school cafeteria following the deaths of Kurt Kelly and Ram Sweeney
While the Heathers undoubtedly rule over Westerburg High School
the manipulative and domineering Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) rules over the Heathers themselves through sheer force of will
Although she was the one who invited Veronica to join their clique
Chandler becomes furious after Veronica "embarrasses" her by turning down sex at a frat party
and tells Veronica to either switch schools or prepare to have her reputation ruined
Chandler isn't able to follow through on her threats—she dies after drinking a poisoned "hangover cure" J.D
an act that Veronica covers up by hastily writing a fake suicide note to leave at the scene
Following Heathers, actress Kim Walker appeared in a handful of other film and television roles, including Say Anything... and The Outsiders. Her last onscreen appearance was in the 2000 film Killing Cinderella. Sadly, Walker passed away in 2001 after being diagnosed with a brain tumor
Fans of Heathers will no doubt recognize the sad irony of her death
as Walker's line "Did you eat a brain tumor for breakfast?" remains one of the film's most quotable.
