Its recent and rapid growth suggests it is of interest to a large number of stakeholders. However, these same features make aggregation and summarization a considerable undertaking. This article uses advanced bibliometric analytics to synthesize this disparate and varied metadata to characterize trends in the treatment of energy justice in academic literature. The review covers 4,196 articles published between 1983 and 2023 with methods appropriate to the number and diversity of publications and associated subfields. We document distinct uses of similar terminologies across subfields in literature, inequitable ratios of global research compared to absolute levels of energy poverty, and the large but under-recognized contribution of cooking to the energy justice literature. In summarizing this voluminous literature and analyzing thematic changes over time, we provide scaffolding for more detailed reviews to place themselves within the larger interconnected literature network. The Initiative for Energy Justice (IEJ) created a workbook that discusses the range of terms associated with ‘energy justice' broadly and how these terms are used by both academics and practitioners (Baker et al., 2019) Their list of common terms includes energy justice we have added the related term fuel poverty which most closely parallels the meaning of energy insecurity and appears earlier in the literature and it is a potentially ‘corruptible concept' highly vulnerable to a range of political agendas” This complex and voluminous literature requires scalable approaches to synthesize insights and trends We leverage advances in systematic literature review approaches and visualization to address this gap Bibliometric methods are uniquely suited to the systematic and comprehensive review of the diverse academic literature composing the field of energy justice we describe the superstructure within the energy justice field showing interlinkages and thematic evolutions and providing a scaffolding that will support future research This article performs a bibliometric review of academic energy justice publications primarily using the R-package biblometrix described by Aria and Cuccurullo (2017) open-source tool allows scholars to follow the complete scientific mapping workflow using substantial and effective statistical algorithms and data visualization tools primarily related to developing countries) and fuel poverty (referred to generally as the lack of ability to afford adequate warmth in the home primarily pertaining to households in Europe) This quantitative review focused on reporting numbers and terms rather than on insights The computational methods used in this analysis allow for the expansion of the time span, search terms, and types of publications to review 4,196 academic publications published and available on the Scopus Database on or before 5 July 2023. Table 2 compares the scope and search criteria of this review to those of Li et al. (2015), Brown et al. (2020a), and Jenkins et al. (2021) Scope and search criteria of existing systematic energy justice reviews The primary difference is the dramatic expansion of the review's search terms in this analysis. Instead of narrowing the search to only articles that include one term explicitly in the title, abstract, or keywords, the search was broadened to include all of the terms that Table 1 identifies from the social science and legal literature (Baker et al., 2019) in addition to fuel poverty By using an asterisk wildcard character as a simplified form of regular expression the search term “energy *justice*” was used to find documents that included energy justice This analysis did not explicitly include energy security as this term generally refers to a different well-established literature at the intersection of electric power systems our search results identified several articles that discussed energy insecurity on a national scale rather than on a household scale is a fragmented and multidisciplinary field a narrow selection of search terms risks missing large portions of the literature Several additional steps were taken to ensure review relevance Nearly 160 articles were removed that used a definition of energy burden from the fields of biology and ecology which refers to metabolic energy burden on an organism scale or societal systems scale We removed duplicate articles using the unique accession numbers for each entry as well as manual methods The computational review of all publications was supplemented by human scanning of all titles for relevance We do not assume that these were foundational articles to fuel poverty research but that they were some of the earliest articles accessible in the Scopus database While the earliest article found for this review was published in 1979 there were only 15 (0.36%) results published before 2000 and only 87 (2%) results between 2000 and 2007 expanding the review's temporal scope does not significantly change the following analyses the date range was expanded for comprehensiveness Since this database has complete coverage of these most popular journals, the use of this single database is sufficient for the following analysis. As a verification step, the search terms from Jenkins et al. (2021) were reproduced in the Scopus database This may be due to later steps by the authors to remove articles they found not to be relevant to the overall review even though the articles fit the explicit search criteria the articles that fit the name of the search criteria but not their spirit may have focused on energy security as in national security risk or may be published in a language other than English The acceptable document types were finally expanded to include articles and editorial materials were all excluded as they were largely repetitive of the original content provided in the included document types This review also did not limit the language of publication Not limiting publications to just those published in English added 87 results published between 1979 and 2023 Many of these articles defined energy poverty for different local contexts By including these diverse global perspectives this review prioritizes equity in its methods as well as its subject matter this review does not use the full text of articles While the full text of many of the included articles is open access many others remain behind journal paywalls The crucial contribution of this bibliometric review to the field lies in its reproducibility this analysis does not pursue the large additional methodological and computational burden that compiling and digitizing the full texts entails the broad search terms result in the inclusion of a small number of publications where energy justice publications that examine technology and are described as having ‘the potential to reduce energy insecurity' or are motivated by ‘overcoming worldwide energy poverty and climate change' Their limited presence is acknowledged but not removed at present from the much larger analysis the strength of the systematic methods outweighs the limited presence of outliers several steps were taken to ensure overall review relevance including removals of biological literature and manual human scanning of all publications these cross-cutting energy justice issues are faced by communities around the world; therefore a focus on any one country may leave out key themes Table 3 describes the resulting contents of this review Descriptive summary of this review's contents The energy justice field has grown quickly since 2009, with a compound annual growth rate of 14.65%. Jumps in productivity in 2018 and 2021 (measured by the slope of scientific production) indicate turning points in the field (Figure 2) further indicating that the field has a strong growth trajectory In a similar fashion to Li et al. (2015) Sovacool is by far the most prolific author in this field even when considering fractional coauthorship In contrast to traditional publication measurement where all authors gain one publication no matter the number of coauthors fractional coauthorship divides the contribution of each publication between the number of coauthors (i.e. 2 co-authors on one publication each are attributed 0.5 fractionalized authorship) Sovacool authored 82 publications in this review equivalent to a fractionalized authorship of 37.35 more than three times higher than the next most prolific author The domination of this academic literature by one author indicates both their core contribution to the growing field and the field's immaturity as an academic dialogue The lack of a more diverse authorship is surprising for this global While energy justice is a rapidly growing field that has gained much academic interest it may not yet have matured into a thriving intellectual exchange among many researchers Notable other authors ranked by their number of publications include Bouzarovski (n = 33) The example of the most globally cited article immediately demonstrates the importance of evaluating local citations instead of global citations in a bibliometric review process. Jacobson and Delucchi (2011) article titled “Providing All Global Energy With Wind and Materials” has the most global citations this article was included in this review because of its use of the term energy insecurity in the first sentence of the abstract Energy insecurity was used twice more throughout the text of the article but only as a motivator as in the sentence “Climate change and energy insecurity are among the greatest problems of our time.” Therefore even though it has the most overall citations Jenkins et al.'s (2016) review titled “Energy Justice: A Conceptual Review” is the most locally cited article and the second-most globally cited article it has significant import both to the larger academic community Their review introduces the previously mentioned three tenets approach of distributional and procedural justice and proposes a research agenda for the field Overall, there are significant similarities between the most globally cited documents and the most locally cited documents indicating the strong links between energy justice and related fields. Table 4 provides a brief synopsis of the ten most locally cited documents in this review and summarizes the key texts recognized within this diverse interdisciplinary field Synopses of the 10 most locally cited documents in this review Figure 4 begins to investigate this (lack of) geographic diversity by visualizing the authors' affiliation locations around the world An author's affiliation country does not necessarily represent the article's study location The disproportionately small presence of sub-Saharan Africa in both the focus of the 10 most locally cited articles and the geographic distribution of authors serves as a stark contrast to the large absolute levels of measurable energy poverty in the sub-continent There were no articles published in any African language These results suggest that (1) academic research into energy justice is not commensurate with absolute need and (2) individuals from the studied countries are often not involved in the formal publication process Although these problems are not unique to energy justice it is particularly pertinent for energy justice to center and involve the voices of those directly affected Country Scientific Production: number of documents with at least one coauthor's affiliation located in each country Scopus searches using “pobreza energética” or related terms in Spanish or Portuguese revealed no new articles indicating that the Scopus database is more limiting than the inclusion of search terms in different languages Bridging language barriers and inequities in global publication systems would allow for larger exchanges of ideas and frameworks to overcome these global issues we acknowledge the dominance of new theory frameworks presented in these articles Nearly half of the articles introduce novel theory frameworks or conceptual approaches to energy justice or energy poverty This finding reflects the importance of framing to unite such a complex and diverse discipline It also indicates the importance of these particular framings to make bringing the experiences of energy justice felt globally for centuries into the academic sphere the representation of author keyword frequency across all 2,290 publications confirms the dominance of the ‘energy poverty' branch of energy justice Authors explicitly included ‘energy justice' in only 13% of publication keywords while ‘energy poverty' was found in 26% of publication keywords Not only are energy poverty and energy access clear energy (in)justice issues but they also compose the majority of articles in the field Prior reviews rarely take into account the varied terminology of this field This result also speaks to the need for studies on energy access and energy poverty to acknowledge their role in the energy justice field at large Overall frequency of the top 25 keywords listed by authors Of the seven search terms (energy justice/equity/democracy/insecurity/burden/poverty Because this review largely draws on academic social science and law literature one would expect similar findings to the Energy Justice Workbook in terms of terminology usage While the frequency rankings of energy justice and energy insecurity are largely in line with their findings this article finds significant differences in the usage of energy burden and energy poverty Baker finds energy burden to be commonly used by social sciences and infrequently used in law but energy poverty to be rarely used by social sciences and infrequently used by law While energy poverty appears in the keywords of 26% of publications in this review These results indicate that although energy poverty has a recognized prominent role in the development of the energy justice field the burden of that poverty has not been equally explored Authors may opt for terminology such as energy poverty as a proxy for energy burden; however this could indicate that the field under-acknowledges the nature of that poverty only acknowledging it as a metric rather than a burden that affects individuals across and within households differently Nuances in language and terminology are crucial in the development of any field but particularly for a field dedicated to the justly characterizing injustice energy justice and energy equity are often used interchangeably; however Energy justice may imply a larger focus on more progressive frameworks such as procedural and restorative justice which generally relies on distributive justice differences in distributions are frequently measured in reference to the equality of some energy good or service rather than other more expansive theories of a just distribution such as a capabilities approach or basic-minimum approach Energy insecurity is either used in the context of national-scale oil crises or household-scale uncertainty and precarity surrounding meeting energy needs In literature from the United States and Europe energy burden often has a narrower definition of a percentage of income spent on energy; however energy burdens come in many non-income forms Insights from literature from Latin America may serve to expand our definitions of energy burdens to include contextual factors such as geography and weather as well as cultural preferences and health effects energy poverty often has more expansive definitions in literature from developing countries and refers more narrowly to the unaffordability of electricity in literature from developed countries Related literature on energy access often falls under energy poverty but generally refers only to the use of electricity rather than energy more holistically without understanding the larger context of how terminologies are used across subfields and geographies energy justice researchers may miss relevant insights from related articles using different terms This plurality of definitions does not necessarily represent a weakness of the field communities must ultimately decide for themselves what justice in their energy systems will mean now and in the future these differing priorities and frameworks for justice may create contested fields where competing definitions of just energy futures conflict An evaluation of author keyword occurrences over time shows that energy poverty has a much longer publication history and remained the most popular author keyword through 2021 The use of energy justice as a keyword only started in 2016 and has grown quickly since The stark difference in growth over time between fuel poverty and energy access compared to energy poverty and energy justice reinforce the disconnect in acknowledging a lack of access as a justice issue We next adapt the method adopted by Cobo et al. (2011) to design a conceptual structure map using a multiple correspondence analysis methodology to cluster all publications in the review into six groups based on author keyword co-occurrence and a factorial analysis (Figure 6) The origin of the map represents the average position of all articles therefore the center of the research field The proximity between keywords corresponds to the shared usage among articles in our review: keywords are close in the conceptual structure map when a large proportion of articles treat them together; keywords are distant when only a small fraction of articles use these words together The intuitive literature clusters are clearly separate the purple cluster represents rural electrification in developing countries the brown cluster focuses on thermal comfort and buildings the blue cluster is framework and justice-focused while the red cluster is health- and poverty-focused The brown “buildings” cluster is farthest from the plot's origin indicating its peripheral nature within the rest of the literature Conceptual structure word map on Keywords Plus generated using multiple correspondence factorial analysis literature clusters include: vulnerability perspectives (orange) rural electrification in developing countries (purple) power systems and transition modeling (green) It is equally important for these types of sub-literature to be in communication while also not overlooking entire subfields in their consolidation The importance of this is evidenced by the absence of cooking Thematic trends in energy justice literature Early literature in this energy justice review focused primarily on households and cooking (categorized under fuel or energy poverty) These themes merged into focuses on poverty and rural electrification between 2011 and 2017 New themes such as energy consumption and food security also emerge here The varied themes for the 2011–2017 period merge and are clarified between 2018 and 2020 into groups labeled electricity Justice only strongly emerges in the last subperiod which includes 2021 through 2023 but builds out of the literature on renewable energy and policy from 2018 through 2020 Fuel poverty (aka energy poverty) is the strongest theme across all subperiods while logical for contexts of national-level grid access to electricity leads the literature to fail to acknowledge the energy justice implications of the other more prominent clean cooking options The current structure of the field would also miss the justice implications of other emerging clean options such as ethanol or biomass pellets in specific advanced gasifiers Our results indicate a growing gap in the literature on the energy justice implications of clean cooking despite the fact that this theme was foundational to establishing the field this article used advanced bibliometric analytics to synthesize disparate and varied metadata to characterize trends in the treatment of energy justice in academic literature In the largest and most comprehensive review of the field to date this review covered 4,196 articles published between 1979 and 2023 at a scale appropriate to the number and diversity of publications Our quantitative methods offer the ability to review this wealth of information in a truly systematic We found that energy justice literature has seen rapid growth over its short history and has the potential to have a large academic and practical impact in the future it houses distinct siloed subfields and remains somewhat removed from longer-established social theories of justice we documented distinct uses of similar terminologies across subfields in the literature inequitable ratios of global investigation to absolute levels of energy poverty and the large but under-recognized contribution of cooking to energy justice literature While prior reviews were able to examine both a larger proportion of the published literature and each article in more depth the field's rapid growth and expansion will make similar tasks increasingly impossible Bibliometric methods allow for the synthesis of larger-scale themes and trends and their interconnections so that more focused reviews can understand their context in the larger discipline This article expanded on earlier bibliometric reviews on energy burden and energy poverty by including highly related literature on fuel poverty We also found that prior reviews understate the proportion of energy justice literature dedicated to household energy poverty and the role of subfields in the development of the larger energy justice field. For example, less than five studies in Jenkins et al.'s (2021) review are related to cooking yet our results speak to the foundational nature of cooking articles in energy justice Energy poverty research in terms of rural electrification and clean cooking has made significant contributions to the field overall in terms of number of articles and intellectual import our results seem to speak to a shift in the field that consolidates cooking into fuel poverty and rural electrification We advocate that energy justice scholars adopt a new term “cooking poverty,” to acknowledge the cooking-specific justice issues that are distinct from lighting and heating and are currently not sufficiently discussed under the umbrella of fuel poverty We also suggest that future research explicitly investigates the energy justice implications of different clean cooking-fuel options the current literature only has a few energy justice articles solely focused on cooking To assume that renewable electrified cooking is the only pathway to a just transition only deprives justice for the most vulnerable in the interim siloed subfields such as energy poverty in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and heating/thermal comfort We believe that the field could benefit from increased learning across related subfields and geographic locations of study households often use their polluting cook stove as a source of heat a benefit that disappears with a clean stove our results show that thermal comfort is rarely discussed in relation to health and poverty or rural electrification within the energy justice subfield of household energy in LMICs there is distinct literature on rural electrification and separately on health/poverty those fields to acknowledge justice implications of the energy–poverty–health nexus Sufficiently recognizing prior contributions and integrating common frameworks and methods will allow energy justice scholars to build from past literature to reach a more universal understanding of energy justice and not overlook key topics Doing so will allow the literature to truly contribute toward achieving equity in both the social and economic participation in energy systems while also remediating the burdens of those historically harmed The original contributions presented in the study are included in the article/Supplementary material further inquiries can be directed to the corresponding author AG-W contributed to crucial data acquisition and substantial revisions on the role of energy poverty and cooking literature DK supported the research and funded this analysis All authors contributed to manuscript revision and approved the publication of the content This work was funded in part by the US National Science Foundation through the InFEWS training program no We are grateful to Duncan Callaway at the University of California Jay Taneja at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Eric Lockhart at the National Renewable Energy Lab for helpful discussions and support The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest IF-W declared that they were an editorial board member of Frontiers This had no impact on the peer review process and the final decision All claims expressed in this article are solely those of the authors and do not necessarily represent those of their affiliated organizations Any product that may be evaluated in this article or claim that may be made by its manufacturer is not guaranteed or endorsed by the publisher The Supplementary Material for this article can be found online at: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fsuep.2023.1175736/full#supplementary-material 1. ^Bradford's law states that “if the journals are arranged in descending order of the number of articles they carried on the subject then successive zones of periodicals containing the same number of articles on the subject for the simple geometric series 1 : ns : ns2 : ns3.” Bradford called the first zone the nucleus of journals particularly devoted to the given subject bibliometrix: An R-Tool for comprehensive science mapping analysis CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar Baker, S. we don't have that’ -- to me BILL O’REILLY (CO-HOST): And if you go around the world -- and this is my final argument -- every country that I've ever been to women are treated worse [than] in the United States Lis Wiehl gets executed for writing this book O'REILLY: Lis Wiehl is beheaded right now in Saudi Arabia for writing this book Even if you go to Europe -- if you go to Italy and you're a good-looking woman like Lis is you're gonna have to be black and blue all day long Guys are gonna put their hands on you in that society in Italy So, all of this whining about American women -- “We don't have this; we don't have that” -- to me, I'm not real sympathetic. But I am a barbarian. market subsidizes the distribution of efficient cookstoves in developing countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but a new study finds that the stoves’ carbon saving credits are vastly overestimated The overestimation undermines efforts to counteract carbon emissions to slow climate change since companies use these offsets to meet climate targets and to sell products labeled as “carbon neutral” instead of making real reductions in greenhouse gas emissions It also undermines trust in the carbon market and therefore the market’s ability to support the long-term financing of efficient stoves Carbon registries adopt methodologies which define which projects are allowed to participate in the offset market and how emissions impacts should be estimated are responsible for following these methodologies to monitor and estimate their project’s emissions reductions and thus the allotted carbon credits The conclusions come from the first comprehensive quantitative quality assessment of any type of offset project in which researchers from the University of California compared five methodologies for evaluating the emission reductions of cookstoves to published studies and their own independent analysis 23 in the journal Nature Sustainability “Clean cooking now figures very centrally on national decarbonization and sustainable development goal strategies, global funding cycles and the political agenda of national leaders,” said Daniel Kammen the James and Katherine Lau Distinguished Professor of Sustainability at UC Berkeley human rights and economics of clean cooking is now critically linked to both social justice and climate strategies around the planet.” which was shared in preprint form last year has already received substantial attention from communities focused on the health effects of cooking sustainable development and national climate action “Cookstove offset methodologies are currently being revised and, if our recommendations are adopted, could become a rare project type that offset buyers can trust,” said Barbara Haya an expert on offset quality and director of the Berkeley Carbon Trading Project at UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy Cookstove offsets have become popular because roughly 2.4 billion people around the world cook with smoky solid fuels or kerosene contributing to 2 to 3 million premature deaths annually and approximately 2% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions Providing efficient cookstoves now represents the fastest growing project type on the voluntary carbon market with the second largest share of issued credits in the first 10 months of 2023 Estimated correctly, carbon offsets have the potential to support the free or subsidized distribution of efficient stoves that reduce time spent collecting firewood or the cost of purchasing fuel, said first author Annelise Gill-Wiehl candidate in the Energy and Resources Group who has conducted extensive household energy fieldwork in East Africa certain stoves can reduce smoke enough to save lives The researchers specifically advise buyers to prioritize projects that distribute stoves that meet the World Health Organization’s health standards The majority of stoves on the market do not The rigorous method the team developed for assessing offset quality could be used by offset program developers program regulators and credit assessors to comprehensively assess offset quality and prevent overcrediting from all project types “Our results support a paradigm shift away from the majority of today’s improved stoves which do not reduce smoke enough to see health benefits towards clean fuels and stoves that can substantially support health and climate benefits with their transparent monitoring and low emission profiles,” Gill-Wiehl said “We find that low quality carbon produces low quality solutions.” Kammen holds parallel appointments in the Energy and Resources Group the Goldman School of Public Policy and the Department of Nuclear Engineering The project was funded by UC Berkeley’s Center for African Studies the Mulago Foundation/Better Cooking Company and the Zaffaroni Family Foundation O’Reilly says he settled to spare his children from bad publicity It’s a puzzling contradiction: Fox News host Bill O’Reilly paid an eye-popping $32 million to a woman who accused him of sexual harassment and something mysteriously described as a “nonconsensual sexual relationship.” Yet he says he did nothing wrong and settled only to shield his children from his bad publicity Why would the fallen king of the “No Spin Zone” pay so much for something he didn’t do The phrase “nonconsensual sexual relationship” may be key was a Harvard law school graduate and attorney who worked as a legal analyst on O’Reilly’s show from 2001 to 2016 The New York Times said her accusations against him included “repeated harassment a nonconsensual sexual relationship and the sending of gay pornography and other sexually explicit material to her.” O’Reilly paid the $32 million out of his own pocket to settle the claim in January which broke the news of the payment over the weekend “One possible reason [for O’Reilly to settle] is there was either an assault or rape,” said New Jersey employment lawyer Nancy Ericka Smith who represented Gretchen Carlson in the sexual harassment lawsuit that toppled O’Reilly’s former boss and won her client a $20 million settlement “‘Nonconsensual’ sounds more like the language that is used in the criminal statutes it’s a forced sex act,” Smith said “That is extreme and can cause unbelievable harm and certainly would cause him embarrassment a long-time employment lawyer in Washington said there’s another possible explanation She interpreted Wiehl’s allegation of “nonconsensual sex” to refer to a type of sexual harassment known as an “unwelcome” sexual relationship it’s a coerced sexual relationship.” She called the $32 million payment “jaw-dropping.” Smith said it might be the highest out-of-court sexual harassment settlement for an individual accuser ever Supervisors who have sex with employees often say it was consensual But sex harassment law allows victims to argue they were coerced and the sex is “unwanted,” because they feared repercussions for refusing said CUNY Law School professor and employment law expert Rick Rossein a person may acquiesce in demands or requests for sex consenting due to fear of economic or career reprisal despite the fact that the sexual advances were unwelcome,” Yale Law School employment law professor Viki Schultz told TheWrap Unwelcome sex is still sexual harassment in the workplace We may never know what happened between O’Reilly and Wiehl Smith and Katz said O’Reilly may have paid such a high amount to make sure the evidence would be destroyed but she added that destroying the evidence hurts “other women [who] could have subpoenaed that evidence in other cases Because evidence of the same person harassing other victims is evidence of sexual harassment.” Katz called the destruction-of-evidence requirement “just another technique to conceal recidivist but that case was brought on behalf of more than 350 women Lis Wiehl is one of the country’s most prominent trial lawyers and well-respected legal commentators She served as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s office and was a tenured professor of law at the University of Washington Wiehl earned her Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School and her MA in literature from the University of Queensland She also served as a legal analyst for Fox News and NPR’s All Things Considered; additionally she has appeared regularly on Your World with Neil Cavuto and she was the host of the Wiehl of Justice podcast Wiehl has most recently collaborated with Caitlin Rother on the nonfiction title Hunting Charles Manson—a painstaking reexamination of the notorious crimes and their cultural context Wiehl entertained questions about what sparked her interest in revisiting the Manson case how she endeavored to tell the story with thriller-like urgency and why our understanding of the crimes is crucial still today the name Charles Manson remains etched into the conscience of American culture Who he was and what he and his “Family” did chipped away at our country’s innocence at a very critical time in our nascent history Who was this head of a murderous “Family” who flaunted this self-made swastika tattoo on his forehead who somehow persuaded young women to kill and torture for him in the late 1960s his “Family” changed American culture forever how it could be prevented from happening again Storytelling is key to success in either of these occupations I’m always thinking about where and how I’m going to tell my next story as well as what kind of motives and means I’ll be ascribing to different characters in my next novel I was driving with my now-grown-up son for a Memorial Day weekend holiday beach ride and as we passed by some dunes on the way to our designated point to meet friends I peered out the window and commented to him “That would be a great place for a murder plot to begin.” Mind you you’re always coming up with murder plots.” Well But whether I’m writing about fictitious murders or prosecuting someone for a very real murder I’m trying to convince someone of the truth I’ll convince a jury by telling them the story of what happened to the victim through the evidence I present—letting the witnesses and documents tell the story for me Writing novels is easier than presenting evidence in a courtroom because the rules of evidence don’t hold me back but staring at a blank page with so-called “writer’s block” has sometimes made me wish for the good old days of a cranky judge But I love bringing what I’ve learned in the courtroom to inform my storytelling and keep my thrillers thrilling Hunting Charles Manson is told as a fast-paced So I hope that readers will read the book almost as a novel with the awareness that the stories really did happen My transition from the courtroom to the publishing world wasn’t much of one at all because my novels were all based on stories I covered as a journalist or prosecuted as a lawyer I take bits and pieces of reality and make up a fictional world I followed leads so I could document and source material One of my purposes in writing this book was to advance the story With my experience in newsrooms—both print and broadcast—I felt it was important to bring readers to the present day with as much new information as possible I wanted to avoid a rehash of the prosecution’s narrative as relayed by the prosecution in Vincent Bugliosi’s Helter Skelter only for cross-referencing and fact-checking and focused on identifying primary source material as you might imagine with a nearly 50-year-old case and many defendants Charles Manson may have been the primary defendant with social histories of defendants that go back an additional 20 or more years I had the amazing experience of being the only member from the press that was allowed access into the latest parole hearing of Charles “Tex” Watson—Manson’s self-proclaimed right-hand man and the one who actually wielded the knife in many of the murders It was a fascinating experience to view evil so close up what truly inspired me was my personal contact with members of the victims’ families who showed up at the various parole hearings of the convicted defendants Even after all these years and all their pain these victims’ memories are kept alive by these family members who are resolute in their message that Manson The investigation—how can I say this nicely—was bungled had parole officers been keeping tabs on Manson the way they should have the murders likely would not have taken place in the culture that defined the late 1960s had the different police departments investigating the cases—including the LAPD and LA County Sheriff—shared more information Manson would have been arrested much earlier than he was there’s nothing special about the way law enforcement handled—or mishandled—this case but the jurisdictional squabbling between different law enforcement precincts was (and is) positively pedestrian We saw the same issues at the federal level after 9/11 when it was revealed that the FBI and the CIA failed to share crucial information regarding the planned terrorist attacks It is also important to note that Manson’s tactics of manipulation are being used today using Manson’s methods of preying upon girls’ insecurities Manson manipulated those insecurities to bring young women into the Family using recruiting methods strikingly similar to those of Nxivm which among other consequences has led to Smallville actress Allison Mack being charged with sex-trafficking used young women’s insecurities to bring them into his circle and deprivation to keep them under his spell It is chilling to see how effective Manson’s techniques continue to be Caitlin brought with her a wealth of experience as both a print reporter and a crime writer She understood how painstaking the research for a book like this had to be and how exacting the task was going to be even Caitlin was surprised by how hard it was to amass all the material that was necessary to have a full and a complete understanding of this case Caitlin was also an amazing sounding board throughout this process She and I had countless conversations about the status of various points in the manuscript Caitlin had sound advice about which direction I should take Caitlin was absolutely instrumental in connecting me with “Stoner” in L.A. who gave me a guided tour of the Spahn Ranch and other Manson highlights (or lowlights) in LA Marina Oswald cooking chicken for dinner with my mom or why my dad was asking her so many questions I learned later that my FBI dad had been assigned to cover Marina after the assassination of John F He was on the hunt for the truth about who was behind the assassination my dad took me to FBI headquarters and showed me the wall of the Most Wanted photos “It takes a team of the best to hunt them down.” my dad continued to be on the hunt for other killers and “bad guys” both as an agent and then a federal prosecutor and his stories were fodder for many dinnertime conversations I became fascinated by the process of the hunt I was honored to spend five years as a federal prosecutor and other agencies to track down and put away the bad guys I loved that the goal of the job was justice for all I’ve yearned to go back to those days of getting behind the scenes of an investigation and hunt I know from first-hand experience what happens in long investigations to the tension or lack of communication between law enforcement agencies I wondered if I could capture some of that in my writing I’m often asked about the “Hunting” series of books and why I decided to take on the Unabomber in the second book The sad truth is there are lots of killers and horrible bad people to choose for a book about “hunting.” Frankly if I’m going to spend two-plus years of my life invested in researching and marketing a book that I will live with for the rest of my life I’m going to pick a subject that is interesting to me and I think has social significance beyond the fact that the person killed a bunch of people the Unabomber changed America and robbed us of our innocence Then he holed up in a remote cabin in Montana and started sending out homemade bombs and terrorized a nation for nearly two decades He put the FBI through its longest manhunt ever And he wrote a manifesto about the computerization of modern society that still resonates with some sectors of our population today and yet even millennials recognize the sketch of the Unabomber Wanted poster and his iconic cultural significance made the Unabomber an intriguing subject for me And then I came in to contact with FBI Supervisory Agent Patrick Webb who had led the Unabomber taskforce in San Francisco in the 60’s He had long since been retired from the agency and leading a cozy life with his wife in New Hampshire But he was unhappy with the way a recent miniseries on TV had portrayed the hunt for the Unabomber—that one agent had almost singlehandedly solved the case after having met the Unabomber several times He said that the miniseries had gotten it wrong He said that the agent portrayed on the show Agent Webb said that the miniseries painted a false narrative of how the FBI really handled the case He worried that if people believed that the TV series was the true story about the Unabomber I told him I wanted to set the record straight This was a big ask because he knew he was dying of cancer But I knew that with Agent Webb’s help I would be able to tell the behind the scenes story of what really happened in the hunt for the Unabomber Most readers will be surprised to learn that the hunt for the Unabomber was almost called off Agent Webb told me that at one point in 1960’s when there had been a several-year lull between bombings wanted to shut down the Unabomber task force Agent Webb had to fight for the very existence of his task force I’m already working on the next “Hunting” subject I can’t tell you who it is yet but it’s another bad guy who is intrinsically intriguing and culturally-relevant today If you want to vote for your favorite contestant The Bigg Boss Vote Online allows you to vote easily from anywhere You may be surprised to learn that if they were casting The Unabomber is the second entry Wiehl entertained questions pertaining to how her new book debunks Discovery’s Manhunter: Unabomber series the ways in which her background lends itself to investigation and analysis why the Unabomber case stymied authorities for many years and how Ted Kaczynkski managed to evade capture for nearly two decades She also discussed her collaborative process with Lisa Pulitzer and teased what comes next took me to FBI headquarters and showed me a wall containing photos of Most Wanted criminals It takes a team of the best agents to hunt them down.”  I think I grew up wanting to hunt down the bad guys whether by putting them in jail as I did when I was a federal prosecutor Then he holed up in a remote cabin in Montana where he made bombs He terrified a nation for nearly two decades and he led the FBI on its longest manhunt ever unlike some serial killers whose influence quickly dwindles after sentencing the Unabomber’s Manifesto—railing against the computerization of modern society—still resonates with some folks today And even more people can still recognize that iconic photo of the man in the hoodie The Unabomber had an undeniably significant impact on American culture important to be sure the story of his hunt and capture is told accurately I was so fortunate to meet FBI Supervisory Agent Patrick Webb who had led the Unabomber taskforce in San Francisco for many years and was distraught about the portrayal of the hunt for the Unabomber The miniseries showed one agent almost singlehandedly solving the case He said that the miniseries had gotten it wrong and that the hunt was a team effort and the help of all the sources he led me to we were able to tell a narrative that runs true to what really happened during the years of hunting for this elusive target My dad was always on the hunt for ‘bad guys’ I guess it’s not surprising that I became a federal prosecutor having been inspired my dad’s passion for pursuing justice I had to conduct my own mini ‘hunt’ to find my main source for the book I used what I call the ‘federal family key’ to persuade agent Webb to initially speak with me about the case and how upset he was about the Discovery miniseries I wanted to tell the story behind the investigation Having led and been a part of many federal investigations myself I have some understanding of what the agents were up against in the Unabomber investigation Agent Webb also led me to several other key agents who had their own stories to tell Being able to reconstruct the investigation with the help from those who lived it offered me a unique perspective The investigation was extraordinarily complex involving literally hundreds of investigators working for a variety of large federal agencies and scattered across the U.S there was no national database for crimes at the time—and reports were hand-typed by investigators and then sent up through the agencies for consideration the Federal Aviation Administration was taking the lead because there were airlines or airline executives involved Postal Service took the lead because the improvised explosive devices had been sent through the postal system Still others were under the purview of the FBI The situation was further complicated because agencies had multiple offices working on the same investigation To be sure investigators were working hard and tracking down leads as best they could But the investigation was massive in scale and for years there was no one office coordinating the efforts Agencies started making progress when a single task force was set up and all the reports started going there and he wasn’t working against any calendar He’d spend months perfecting bomb-making techniques in his little cabin in the woods He never divulged his plans or strategies to anyone and most folks just ignored him as an oddball who lived alone in the woods There was nothing about his that suggested he was Ted Kaczynski was using discarded pieces of wood and metal that he picked up along the edge of the road He never bought new materials to fashion his bomb components There was never anything that investigators could trace back to a lumber yard or plumbing supply shop because he never frequented those establishments and never bought any of his bomb-making goods To further compound problems for investigators Kaczynski had been careful to remove any serial numbers or other identifying marks from the components he used he scraped the labels off batteries to ensure that investigators couldn’t trace them back to a specific production batch at a specific plant He was scrupulous in his work and continued to hone his bomb-making techniques over the years keeping track of his progress in his notebooks Kaczynski was also a loner; he had no connections to radical groups or individuals who wanted to bring the government down that these crimes also happened before the advent of closed-circuit TVs and video surveillance systems leaving no trail as he moved into and out of communities It was years before authorities finally found a witness allowing them to develop the first sketch of one of the most wanted men in the U.S Having exhausted all investigative avenues UNABOM taskforce members grappled with whether they should publish the Kaczynski Manifesto sent to The New York Times Many were of the belief that you don’t ever give terrorists a platform and that publishing his writings was a bad idea with no other fresh leads and the possibility of more deaths and injuries The decision was made at the highest levels of the FBI during a meeting that included the director of the FBI and publishers of The New York Times and Washington Post as well as several senior members of the UNABOMB task force One of those task force members was convinced that somebody reading the manifesto would recognize the author’s wording and phrasing—and hopefully come forward to authorities This is exactly what happened when Ted Kaczynski’s sister-in-law recognized similarities between the Unabomber’s writings and some of the old letters he had sent to Ted’s brother Lisa shared my drive to tell this true story behind the investigation from an angle that had not already been told and she brought her years of reporting and investigative talents to the task She tracked down some of the primary sources for the book and she had a great way of looking at the arch of the Unabomber story we took a massive amount of information and crafted a structure that made coherent sense of almost two decades of investigations and bombings Lisa and I took different pieces of the research and came back together to share collective notes and I am very grateful to Lisa for her work and for her gentle thoughtfulness along the way was the one to suggest that we send Agent Webb fresh Florida grapefruits for Christmas said that those grapefruits were one of the last things Agent Webb truly enjoyed eating before he died of cancer shortly after that Christmas you know I can’t tell you the target of my next “hunt” But I can tell you it’s a bad guy who is both intrinsically interesting and culturally relevant today I’m bringing my law enforcement background to the ‘hunt’ and new angles on a subject that may even continue to threaten our national security a team of FBI agents closed in on an isolated cabin in remote Montana marking the end of the longest and most expensive investigation in FBI history The cabin’s lone inhabitant was a former mathematics prodigy and professor who had abandoned society decades earlier but everyone knew the mayhem and death associated with his nickname: the Unabomber Kaczynski had masterminded a campaign of random terror killing and maiming innocent people through bombs sent in untraceable packages The FBI task force charged with finding the perpetrator of these horrifying crimes grew to 150 people yet his identity remained a maddening mystery a “manifesto” from the Unabomber was published in the New York Times and Washington Post resulting in a cascade of tips – including the one that cracked the case New York Times best-selling author and former federal prosecutor Lis Wiehl meticulously reconstructs the white-knuckle tension-filled hunt to identify and capture the mysterious killer true crime thriller of the years-long battle of wits In part two of the Wiehl of Justice interview with newly exonerated Cal Harris Cal opens up and explains why he wants justice for those he feels abused their official powers in his case Were there motivations having nothing to do with actual evidence Harris and his attorney Bruce Barket elaborate on these issues in this podcast We also learn more about who they feel is the real perpetrator against Michele Harris and how they are trying to help authorities pursue this avenue of investigation Remember: if you’ve missed how this Wiehl of Justice podcast series began The Cal Harris Story – Episode One BEVERLY HILLS—Catching up with former federal prosecutor Lis Wiehl is always a treat The beauty has a wonderful new book titled “Hand of Fate,” that she’s been very busy promoting appearance on ABC’s “The View” showed everyone just how popular the Fox News legal analyst is with women in America but I keep begging Lis to tell me who it’s based on She laughs at any suggestion that the book is based on anyone’s life but she readily admits that meeting many people prosecuting in the past and working on Fox News with so many big cases going on that she did get a lot of ideas when writing the book What is most fascinating about “Hand of Fate” is that when I picked it up I could not put the book down and knowing what the ending was was the most important thing to me for about 10 hours who is one of the world’s most renowned defense attorneys I’m sure Mickey will disagree with Lis’s and my own assessment of the Roman Polanski case when I had the opportunity last week to discuss Polanski with Wiehl who has prosecuted many cases in the federal system throughout her distinguished legal career I had to ask her keen and pivotal perspective on a case that is sending shockwaves throughout Hollywood Having lost friends over the fact that some even women have defended a man who admitted to raping a 13-year-old child has been very eye-opening to me Lis and I discussed how people blame the girl never fully blaming the perpetrator of the crime or even taking serious the most recent accusations by actress Charlotte Lewis Americans like to belittle the way Muslims often treat young girls and women of violent crimes We may not commit mercy killings in the name of family honor but we have no little empathy as a whole for young girls or women who cry rape they go into an attack mode to find out the background of the alleged victim The safety of young women and children should mean a lot more to us than it currently does in a civilized society another case you may be writing about one day is the Roman Polanski case Have you heard that British actress Charlotte Lewis is now alleging he assaulted her in 1982 just four years after he fled America to not face sentencing in his statutory rape case Sex offenders deserve harsh sentences because they are likely to repeat their crimes in the future seeing how even after the hearings and media storm in California he apparently slept with a 16-year-old girl a few years after.” Q-It’s being reported around the world that Hollywood stands by Polanski who also married a young woman he once considered his adoptive daughter what are the chances Polanski will lose his battle and will be extradited back to face sentencing I believe he will eventually be extradited back to the United States The Swiss signed an extradition treaty with us in 1995 At some point it’s going to come down to: do they honor their treaty or don’t they other countries may be reluctant to enter agreements with them.” Q-I have no respect for anyone who has admitted to drugging and sodomizing an underage girl Gloria Allred’s client Charlotte Lewis seemed quite believable and truthful It should be pointed out that she paid for her trip to Los Angeles from the UK and is not asking for anything just to tell her story to the sentencing judge will the sentencing judge take any of her words and her alleged experiences into consideration in making his decision on Polanski’s potential sentence A-“The new allegations by Charlotte Lewis are interesting to say the least She was 16 when the alleged incident took place which is important since in France a 16-year-old can consent to sex a Judge in the United States can take this information and use it in the sentence On its face what Polanski did is horrendous He was a 41-year-old powerful film director who aggressively coerced a 16-year-old girl with no money Q-You’ve been a member of the Bar for decades now Have you ever seen any case like this one with Polanski and why is it that people in America are willing to forgive and forget these types of crimes against women Even if the past victim says she doesn’t want the man prosecuted isn’t the fact that he admitted to committing an act that was certainly against California state law important to adjudicate in our justice system it is not up to the accuser if charges are brought or not The government can take their wishes into account; however ultimately if a crime was committed it is the government’s responsibility to bring charges I think in the past women did not have the political power as they do now They will not turn a blind eye to heinous crimes committed against women and children.” Wiehl’s amazing novel “Hand of Fate” is available at bookstores nationwide and on Amazon her handsome husband tackles the Polanski case with me as well Lis Wiehl is a bestselling author of both fiction and nonfiction She can be heard weekdays on Bill O’Reilly’s radio show and also on his primetime TV show “The O’Reilly Factor.” Just when you thought things couldn't get crazier Fox News's Lis Wiehl takes a look at some of the legal stories making headlines this week "Legal Lis" focuses on kids in the most recent appearance on First News with Keeler in the Morning Topic 1- Texas Police Shut Down Kiddy Lemonade Stand Because They Didn't Have a Permit Topic 2- Woman Pulls 6 Year-Old Son Into Walmart Brawl Topic 3- Parents Charged with Neglect After 11-Year-Old Plays in Yard for 90-Minutes Just when you thought things couldn't get crazier Fox News's Lis Wiehl takes a look at some of the legal stories making headlines this week \"Legal Lis\" focuses on kids in the most recent appearance on First News with Keeler in the Morning...\nRead More 710 WOR/New York will debut WOR Tonight with Joe Concha & Lis Wiehl Hosted by The Hill reporter and columnist Joe Concha and best-selling author Lis Wiehl WOR Tonight will be a New York-centric show spotlighting a mix of top news stories the hosts will offer their views on the stories of the day from both sides of the political aisle and will take calls from listeners which should make things quite interesting and unpredictable.” but we’re also going to offer up the kind of news and views that people deal with every day,” said Concha “We want to tell stories people can relate to as well as empathize with and hope to make you laugh a few times in the process.” “You’ll get hard news shared by two people who are news veterans and experts in the fields of law and media and website in this browser for the next time I comment Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_2" ).setAttribute( "value" Subscribe on iTunes ?Geraldo Rivera is currently host of “Geraldo Rivera Reports” on Fox News Channel (FNC) He joined the network in 2001 as a war correspondent Rivera served as host of CNBC’s number-one rated prime time show “Rivera Live,” where his critically-acclaimed coverage of the O.J Simpson civil trial verdict set an all-time CNBC ratings record Bill O'Reilly claims The New York Times' latest bombshell is just "another smear article" against him But he has not disputed the facts surrounding his $32 million settlement with longtime Fox News colleague Lis Wiehl O'Reilly is expected to say more about the matter on Monday in accordance with the terms of the extraordinary settlement payment The new O'Reilly revelations were a top story on TV and in the papers on Monday The Times released new audio from its interview with the dethroned Fox News star and it's clear from the tape that O'Reilly feels he is the real victim "We have physical proof that this is bulls@# So it's on you if you want to destroy my children further," O'Reilly told Times reporters Emily Steel and Michael Schmidt who have been the subject of a long-running custody battle "Why don't you be human beings for once?" O'Reilly said to the Times reporters He asserted that he paid the settlements not because he was guilty of sexual harassment but because he wanted to avoid trials that would hurt his family It's politically and financially motivated And we can prove it with shocking information." O'Reilly has repeatedly made this claim in interviews and on his nightly podcast hours after the Times story about the $32 million settlement came out O'Reilly tweeted: "My investigative team has done a superb job in exposing the lies and smear O'Reilly has been actively seeking a new TV job His spokesman Mark Fabiani asserted that the leaks to the Times were "obviously designed to embarrass Bill O'Reilly and to keep him from competing in the marketplace." On CNN's "Reliable Sources," Steel had a different account She and Schmidt had been pursuing information about the Wiehl settlement "for a while," she said but they weren't able to confirm it for their first story about O'Reilly's secret settlements but Fox opened an investigation and companies yanked ads from his show The Times continued to look into his conduct with Wiehl It turned out that the settlement payment dwarfed all the past deals involving O'Reilly or other Fox employees accused of misconduct Wiehl had come forward and threatened to sue O'Reilly in January CNN has independently confirmed the $32 million figure and reviewed a copy of Wiehl's affidavit in the case Why O'Reilly was willing to pay Wiehl so much money is the crux of the mystery "Her allegations included repeated sexual harassment during her 15-year tenure as a legal analyst at Fox News," Steel said "We also know that she made allegations of a nonconsensual sexual relationship and that her allegations included that he sent her pornographic material that included gay pornography." Schmidt said "I think that he was concerned about the gay pornography stuff." The podcast contained clips from Schmidt and Steel's interview with O'Reilly which took place a few days before the story about the $32 million settlement came out and surely you both know that," O'Reilly told the reporters "I've never had one complaint filed against me by a co-worker in any Human Resources department." and the pain it brings to my children is indescribable," O'Reilly said At times during the interview he was subdued; at other times The settlement agreement was supposed to remain a secret O'Reilly's spokesman emphasized over the weekend that Wiehl withdrew her complaint when the settlement deal was struck I would no longer make the allegations contained in the draft complaint." The next day, she told colleagues that she was leaving Fox News He was welcomed back for an interview with Sean Hannity last month -- his first time back on Fox since the scandal In the wake of the newly embarrassing headlines about the $32 million a return appearance is exceedingly unlikely
