Tests of a geothermal project in Wilhelmsburg
48-degree Celsius thermal water can be extracted from a depth of over 1,300 metres
The first households in Wilhelmsburg will be supplied with heat from spring 2025
The geothermal plant is expect to supply over 6,000 households with climate-friendly heat in the long term
The local heating networks "Energiebunker" and "Energieverbund Wilhelmsburg-Mitte" are to be merged and expanded by the new geothermal plant creating a large district heating network
Construction of the furnace is due to start next spring
The completed plant will have a geothermal heat output of around six megawatts
thermal water will be pumped from a depth of over 1,300 metres and fed into the water circuit to supply more than 4,700 households
To increase the thermal energy and the capacity to over 6,000 households
an efficient heat pump system will reach the respective temperature depending on the season
The German Ministry of Economics is putting EUR 22.5 million in funds towards the geothermal project
which is being carried out as part of the real laboratory IW3 to supply the suburb of Wilhelmsburg with CO2-free heat in future

Julie Chamberlain and the cover of her new book
Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies
Racialized Residents on Urban Development and Social Mix Planning in a Hamburg Neighbourhood
The book is one of the first of its kind to address the racialization of a German urban area
Chamberlain’s history with the neighbourhood of Wilhelmsburg dates back to 2011 when she travelled to Hamburg on a graduate study tour
Wilhelmsburg received international attention for its intensive re-planning and development through IBA Hamburg
a German architecture and planning structure
“The impetus for this research was a statement I heard from a local urban planner when I first visited Hamburg,” said Dr
“The statement was: ‘to solve the problems facing the island neighbourhood of Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg
its population would have to be transformed.’”
Determined to challenge this unsettling notion
Chamberlain took the opportunity to focus her research on exploring who the population was imagined to be and how the public’s perception of Wilhelmsburg could be transformed through the perspectives of its racialized residents
The PhD research quickly caught the attention of Transcript
a German academic publisher of cultural and social studies scholarship in German and English
Chamberlain’s research into a book that contributes to the international scholarly debate and knowledge on the experiences of racialized residents in German neighbourhoods
Chamberlain also mentions that the statement made by the local urban planner is not an uncommon view among some German residents
“Black and People of Colour scholars and activists have argued for years for more attention to the experiences of racialized people and how racism shapes structures
and everyday life in urban centres in Germany,” said Dr
This book contributes to scholarly and activist conversations
closing the gap of research into how racial capitalism has shaped urban development
how racism is integrated into social mix policy
and the complex ways that city residents navigate and resist racialization to make welcoming neighbourhoods
this book paints a picture of the place that is more nuanced and complex than the dominant story that was told about it for many years,” said Dr
“It captures a moment in time in a gentrification process that is well underway but not complete.”

This complex of 33 dwellings is the result of two successive negotiation processes
The first responds to a competition organized by the International Building Exhibition (IBA) of Hamburg in 2008 and is part of an urban development for the Wilhelmsburg neighborhood
The urban project involves a contemporary reinterpretation of the terrasse
a traditional row-house typology of Hamburg’s working class
The second addresses a participatory process that includes the future residents
Under the premise of producing a new sustainable urban system
special emphasis goes to the individual dwelling
the definition and prioritization of public and collective spaces
The blocks are made to face each other along a central street reduced in size to limit the impact of traffic and create a green
The studied treatment of the green zones makes it possible to create natural borders between private and collective spaces
The U configuration of the blocks accentuates the sense of intimacy along the routes
optimizing the connection with the park and creating a feeling of seclusion
the project presents three spaces for socialization
each representing a different form thereof: one is public
along the facade to the street; the other is both collective and private
in the courtyards; and the third are the individual terraces
Each of the four built blocks accommodates 6-10 apartments
besides storage rooms and facilities for baugruppen activities (meetings
There are two different typologies: row houses and stacked apartments
the 20 attached dwellings (120-160 m²) each have three stories
and terraces facing the street and the patio
they are flats or duplexes and have direct access to a garden through a terrace or gallery
The composition of the facades varies in accordance with their location
a series of long narrow windows establishes a constant rhythm
while facing the patios are large openings that give views and bring sunlight into the homes
The compositional variation extends to the wooden cladding
with the slats varying in both direction and size
and to the color of the window frames and shutters

There is a lot of public and political pressure to make the energy transition a success
Germany is a country that faces this pressure too
further augmented by a strong reduction in gas supplies from Russia in recent months and the related need to urgently diversify the energy mix
it is disappointing to see that a flagship geothermal exploration drilled in the north of Germany in the city of Hamburg has not delivered what many people had hoped for
See also: Hamburg – not as hot as expected
The Hamburg geothermal project aimed at producing 10 MW from a 130°C reservoir
With a lot of promotional work carried out to inform the public about what was going on in the Wilhelmsburg area of Hamburg
the project received a lot of attention as the well was being drilled
The Hamburg geothermal project aimed at a reservoir of Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic age (Rhaetian sandstone) at a depth of more than 3 km
The target was reached – albeit 300 m shallower than foreseen – and core was cut
subsequent analysis revealed that the rock’s flow properties were of insufficient quality to warrant drilling another well
Targeting the Rhaetian sandstone in the area should not be regarded as an outright mistake though; the reservoir is known for its good quality in other parts of northern Germany
when plotting the location of the well on a recently published map showing the sedimentary architecture of the Triassic reservoir in the area
it is clear that the well was not drilled in an optimal location (see map above)
Constrained by several wells drilled in the area in the past
the conceptual model suggests that the deltaic sandstones are shaling out in the direction of where the well was drilled
Even when one takes into account that this map remains a conceptual representation of the actual subsurface setting
and will always need revision with more wells being drilled
the fact that it was published before the well was spudded still sparks the question of why it was drilled at the chosen site

the “Energy Bunker’s” 10-foot-thick concrete walls are now ideal for clean energy creation and storage
BY Ben Schiller
The enormous air raid bunker in Wilhelmsburg
it sheltered 30,000 Hamburg residents a night as Allied bombs fell
and men shot from “flak towers” on the roof
it’s a bunker of a different sort–one to store energy
And its role isn’t so much to fend against incoming fire as to protect against grid failure
Opened last year, the Energy Bunker is an example of the infrastructure Germany is using as it shifts towards more renewable sources of power
The building contains a half-million-gallon water tank that stores heat from a solar thermal plant
a unit that burns wood chips and recycles waste heat from a nearby industrial plant
A combined heat and power system burns biogas to produce more heat
And a south-facing solar array produces yet more power
The bunker supplies enough heat for 3,000 homes as part of a local heating network
don’t generate heat in their homes as most of us do
Their homes therefore waste far less energy than is typical
Though the Bunker is connected to the main power grid
it’s effectively a “virtual power plant” that combines several smaller
That offers a buffer to the mainstream grid
and flexibility to managers who can decide on the best mix of heat energy and electricity (if the sun isn’t shining
The bunker itself normally supplies enough electricity for about 1,000 homes
The Bunker is part of a wider project in Wilhelmsburg to go 100% carbon neutral by 2050
Engineers are now looking at integrating wind farms from Northern Germany
That will allow the grid to store more energy when winds are blowing hard
saving reserves for when the weather is less co-operative
British experts almost demolished the Bunker as they tried to put a permanent end to German war capacity
they only got as far as destroying six of the eight floors inside
The 10-foot-thick concrete walls are now ideal for their purpose

Recent urban planning and redevelopment in the neighbourhood of Wilhelmsburg
is based on the idea of ‘social mixing,’ a controversial planning idea that disadvantages poor and racialized people (people who are considered to be non-German based on their names
This research used mixed qualitative methods to learn about what racialized long-time residents of Wilhelmsburg think about recent developments and to learn how they figure into local planning
It found that residents see their neighbourhood very differently from its outside image and that they welcome redevelopment as well as worry about its impact on the neighbourhood’s most vulnerable population
Hamburg is generally considered an open and cosmopolitan city
but it has a long history of racism and colonialism
The neighbourhood of Wilhelmsburg has had a ‘bad reputation’ for many years—as residents put it—because it was largely an immigrant and working-class neighbourhood
and was planned as a location for the city’s industry and waste
The city’s main approach to problem-solving in the neighbourhood is ‘mixing’ the population based on class and race
This is a popular idea in German urban planning and is troubling because it depends upon legal discrimination that values some people over others
This research shines a spotlight on the perspectives of racialized residents of the changing neighbourhood and treats their perspectives as valuable and important
Black German and German People of Colour scholars have been calling for this kind of anti-racist research for a long time
where the realities of discrimination and racism have been a taboo subject until recently
This research draws attention to racial discrimination in urban planning and contributes to anti-racist advocacy
I conducted interviews with racialized residents who had lived in Wilhelmsburg for more than ten years
and with politicians and planners who worked in the neighbourhood
participating in local life and planning-related events
and studying the local historical and government archives
I held a community event to discuss my initial findings
Racialized residents deeply valued Wilhelmsburg and challenged the planning narrative that treats diversity as a problem
They reported that the neighbourhood welcomes everyone
especially people who otherwise faced intense discrimination in Germany
Many participants called Wilhelmsburg Heimat
which is a uniquely German term for belonging and identifying with a place
Residents were hopeful but worried about what current developments will bring over time and had mixed feelings about whether changes were really meant to benefit them
middle-class Germans have been attracted to the neighbourhood and that there are new cafés and shops
This has changed Wilhelmsburg’s image in a positive way
finding housing as a racialized person has become more difficult
This is consistent with social mix planning
which treats racialized people as displaceable in the name of neighbourhood improvement
Yet the residents I spoke to argued that social mix planning could challenge the racism of white
middle-class Germans who have fled and avoided the neighbourhood in the past
Residents hoped that that current developments would improve local infrastructure
but not change the beauty and character of Wilhelmsburg too much
The study can support critical reflection for urban planners and politicians to reconsider their practices and assumptions
It can inform resident activism and organizing
as well as future urban research in Hamburg and beyond

The German company IBA Hamburg has opened the world’s first building run on algae biomass
The International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg 2013 BIQ project
is now ready with the first façade elements installed and all trial runs successfully completed
saw the most spectacular event in Wilhelmsburg Central in which the building’s green microalgae flowed into its glass facades
The BIQ (Bio Intelligent Quotient) is a cubic
five-storey Passive House with façades in two different designs
is the result of an IBA architectural competition
which was won by a design by the SPLITTERWERK team from Graz
The buildings technical design and bioreactor façade were jointly implemented by Arup Deutschland GmbH
The opening ceremony was formally conducted by IBA Hamburg and the investors Otto Wulff Bauunternehmung and SSC Strategic Science Consult
cutting-edge project reveals how residential construction can also be green architecture in a literal sense
The BIQ is the first building in the world to have a bioreactor façade as part of an integrated renewable energy concept
we are now opening the second experimental building as part of the IBA Hamburg the BIQ” said Stefan Wulff
Managing Director of Otto Wulff Bauunternehmungen
“This underlines the facts that we stand for innovative building and believe in the future viability of Wilhelmsburg as a residential location.”
glass elements that generate biomass and heat
The building is one of the Smart Material House model projects forming part of IBA Hamburg’s Building Exhibition which demonstrate new and intelligent construction materials used in buildings and façades
“The microalgae give the building its own unique energy and aesthetic look
help to keep the apartments within the building shaded and supply heating and biomass that can be recycled” said the Director of IBA
“The project sends out an important message for construction in times of climate change.”
On the south-west and south-east sides of the building the façade has a second outer shell positioned in front of it which is the bioreactor façade
It is here that the microalgae are cultivated for the purposes of generating energy and for light control and the provision of shade for the block
The continuous growth of the algae and the rising gas bubbles mean that the façade is in constant flux
The sun’s radiation also generates thermal energy in the building’s water-filled glass elements
The algae used this sunlight to create biomass through photosynthesis and the heat is provided to the building through a heat exchanger
The biomass is used for energy purposes elsewhere
“The bioreactor façade can only begin to operate when the algae are introduced
at which point it can be valued in terms of performance and visual appeal” said Dr Martin Kerner
Managing Director of SSC Strategic Science Consult
“In contrast to the algae façades facing southwards
the north-west and north-east sides have a luminous
Spacious balconies overlooking the future Island Park and IBA Hamburg building provide all 15 rented apartments with high-quality access to the open air
Future residents there families with children or couples will be able to experience the bioreactor façade at close quarters.”
A total of four model residences have been built on the edge of the park site in Wilhelmsburg Central for the International Garden Show in 2013
The intention is that they should be objects for discussion and observation long after they have been completed
establishing a new building typology in the process
The three companies involved in the project
have been working on this joint project since November 2010
The project was funded by the Building The Future research initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Transport
Its purpose was to create a façade system that would make it possible to control the use of the bioreactor façade on the building
The result was the development of a fully operational reactor that can be installed as a façade element

The districts of HafenCity and Wilhelmsburg in Hamburg
Formerly a rundown warehouse district and a dock area respectively, the two neighborhoods are being remade into modern
environmentally responsible mixed-use developments
Areas of the port city are prone to flooding
so construction is made to be resilient to water intrusion
An innovative landscaping system was created where every building’s first floor is uninhabited
Offices and businesses are allowed on ground floors
Buildings are equipped with metal doors that close during floods
The strategy is to give the water space to flow instead of trying to stop it with dikes
The Wilhelmsburg development includes wind turbines and solar panels that provide electricity for 4,000 homes
HafenCity buildings feature rooftop PVs and one has a wind turbine

GERMANY: A 6MW geothermal heat pump system capable of supplying over 6,000 households is set to be installed in the Wilhelmsburg district of Hamburg.
In an expansion of the current Wilhelmsburg heating network operated by Hamburger Energiewerke
construction of a heating plant at the geothermal energy site is scheduled to start in spring 2024
with connection to the network in spring 2025
The project team has installed special filter pipes in the production borehole over the past few months and carried out production tests
during which thermal water was successfully pumped from a depth of over 1,300m at a temperature of 48ºC
in which the extracted thermal water is returned to the 130m thick sandstone layer via a second borehole
According to a study by Germany’s Federal Environment Agency
deep geothermal energy could contribute 118TWh per year to climate-neutral heat supply by 2050. A total of 42 deep geothermal systems – defined as systems with a drilling depth of over 400m and an average depth of 2,500m – have been implemented in Germany with an installed heat output of 417MW.

"It's still surreal for me to be a little boy from Wilhelmsburg (a district of Hamburg) playing for the biggest club in the world," said Alfa-Ruprecht. He completed his first training session at Einigkeit Wilhelmsburg
where the foundations of his career were laid
"My mother didn't know what we needed for training
we quickly went to a shop and bought some jogging pants and a T-shirt
My uncle also gave me some used football boots."
Alfa-Ruprecht describes himself as a child raised on grass pitches and a street footballer at heart
In addition to the classic strengths such as ball control and speed
his style of play is characterised by remarkable creativity
which in turn is reflected in his dribbling skills and spatial awareness
"I grew up with the football pitch mentality and have internalised it
If you spend most of your free time in a football cage or on the pitch
you learn basic characteristics such as assertiveness
stamina and courage,” said the young star
“It's about getting up again after losing a duel or defeat in the game and carrying on
Street football also promotes purely technical skills
You learn how to use tricks to prevail against bigger and stronger players in a confined space
There was only ever one goal for Alfa-Ruprecht - being on the football pitch
from whom he was able to get an autograph at a final youth team barbecue
"We play in the same position and I liked his style of football straight away," remembers Alfa-Ruprecht
Alfa-Ruprecht played for the German club for five years and during this time he also had to cope with the first setback of his young career
I contracted pubic bone inflammation and was out for almost eight months,” recalls the German youth international
I received an incredible amount of support from the club
my family and especially from the physiotherapists
"I didn't know if I would ever be able to become a professional footballer or return to the pitch." After his injury
Alfa-Ruprecht got himself back in to good shape and attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich
he decided to move to Man City in September 2022
"Since my father lives in England and I wanted to go to him
only an English club came into question for me,” said Alfa-Ruprecht
“When I saw the City training complex for the first time
it is a great privilege and an honour at the same time to be able to play for Manchester City.”
The young talent has been part of Man City's U21 team since the summer of 2024 and has quickly developed into a key player and leader. In the first five league games, the German youth international scored four times and in his first game in the UEFA Youth League he scored a brace against Inter Milan
Alfa-Ruprecht maintains a close contact with the German youth director Thomas Krücken
After every game we talk about the situations that went well and the ones that went badly
He calls me ‘Rabbit’ because of my speed
It makes me incredibly proud that I have someone with absolute expertise behind me who believes in me and my abilities," says Alfa-Ruprecht
Although the 18-year-old has been playing for City for three years now
he is still impressed by the Sky Blues' training complex: "I was actually a little overwhelmed at first
Everything is timed down to the smallest detail
If a training session is supposed to last 60 minutes
you have video analysts or nutritionists at your side
sometimes I miss eating a packet of Toffifee or Knoppers in the evening
But I'm happy to forgo that for the dream of professional football," explains the young German talent with a smile
Details that you would never even think of," says Alfa-Ruprecht
English football has had a positive impact on Alfa-Ruprecht in many ways
as it has enabled him to better focus his attention
Additional sessions have so far ensured that he has been able to improve in many areas in particular
it is absolutely natural to use my free time effectively and sensibly
but generally it is more important to me to use the time to develop my skills
I want to become more unpredictable for the opponent in the game and I can only do that if I do more and go the extra mile," said the young City star
who hopes to be able to take the next step soon and play in the Premier League for the first time
