the proper ways to dispose of various items and limit the amount of waste in landfills Problem-solving was a common challenge Steven and his team faced and together the team had to find a solution Steven notes that moving through these challenges and generating solutions has been extremely rewarding and it is a process that will continue throughout the entirety of their venture Steven also mentioned that the process of getting started was extremely difficult “I had in my mind this dream and vision of how I wanted the business to look It’s important to know that nothing is going to be perfect from the outset.” Steven provides the following advice for current students “If you're sitting in class or driving somewhere and your mind starts drifting -- and you're thinking about one specific problem or business idea I would say that's the most important piece.” To sign up for Next Use, please visit their website to view their available services/pricing a member of the Next Use of being unfeeling unwilling to go with their gut instinct In “To Hell with Cronjé,” by Ingrid Winterbach and translated from the Afrikaans by Elsa Silke the scientist protagonists of the Boer War novel are submerged in grim feelings rescued only by their ability to balance the war’s deluge of harshness with a desire to continue observing Winterbach channels the brutality of poverty violence with cactus-like prose—dry and prickly on the outside but lush and rewarding on the inside A jar holds a possibly prophetic severed head of a human “There is something cold and saprophytic about the head A small coral snake—like a necklace—on a rock.” There are other seers ones who claim to have contact with the dead Relentlessly empirical—their belief in evolution baffles and angers their comrades—the men are struck open by the war and what they have lost There is no assumption that their empirical efforts are any more truthful than the mystical discoveries of the seer Oompie The war turns the Afrikaaners of “To Hell with Cronjé” on their heads “Each of our camp-fellows has clearly been inured in his own particular way and is no longer suitable for active combat…” Abraham has regressed to the mind of a two-year-old Japie Stilgenmoed couldn’t stop reading and fell in love with destruction The injuries suffered by Reitz and Ben are tangled and over the course of the novel Winterbach slides along the threads of their psychoses Reitz “thinks of an earth the size of a grain of sand in the universe,” and “In this way he tries to comfort and protect himself against the invasion of malevolent thoughts.” Seeing the world through the eyes of Reitz and Ben the readers too find gentleness in the sedimentation of human death and cruelty To Hell with Cronjé By Ingrid Winterbach Open Letter Botswana’s Okavango Delta offers unrivalled safari experiences This article was adapted from National Geographic Traveller (UK).Bouncing with the updrafts in the back of a single-engine Cessna I watch the slim shadow of our aeroplane dance across the marbled expanse of the Okavango Delta “If we go down out here,” shouts the pilot “you’ll be near the bottom of the food chain.” We swoop over swamplands and lagoons concealing half-submerged crocodiles and hippos as the pilot whips the plane into a series of ever-steeper banks and turns This makes the flight less like the scenic aerial cruise advertised and more like riding a crop duster through a storm proves a fitting introduction to my fortnight in northern Botswana the Kalahari Desert’s shallow clay pools and braided waterways reflect the passing clouds as keenly as quicksilver; the palms and plains are electric-green It’s a version of the Delta that few travellers see as most safari guests choose the country’s arid months over this a herd of giraffe ambles towards a vast watering hole; beneath the other wildebeest sprint across emerald brushland quenching these thirsty lands with myriad tributaries destined to finally peter out and soak away into the sandy earth the water serves as lifeblood for a menagerie of African species that have earned this region a reputation as one of the richest wildlife enclaves left on Earth Guide Keitopetse Petros Kagande navigates a mopane grove on the outer Okavango Delta while voluntourists look out for wildlife.Photograph by Joe SillsDespite the hypnotising tranquillity of the landscape from on high the reality for conservationists at ground level is more fraught Rising global temperatures are threatening the stability of both natural ecosystems and community life in the Okavango Researchers in Botswana need to know which animals live where how those populations interact with people and where potential pressure points are going to appear And with state-sponsored conservation funding in short supply across the region they’re increasingly relying on paying voluntourists to help with the manpower needed for data collection 50-mile trip from Maun into the bush ahead of us As a donkey-strewn tarmac road crumbles into a rutted the welcome spiel quickly segues into chatter about the stark realities of my visit “The picture for Botswana is this: the mean temperature is going to rise by 1.5-2C over the next 40 to 50 years,” warns Christiaan Winterbach an often-shoeless wildlife researcher who has been working in the Okavango Delta since the 1990s he’s participated in projects that have painted a climate map of the area dating back more than 1,000 years By studying core samples taken from ancient baobab trees and combining the information with his decades of expertise about the region’s apex predators Christiaan has been able to connect the dots between water and wildlife “Rainfall in the Angolan Highlands is predicted to be about 40% of its current level in the next three decades,” he explains livestock and humans will compete for water resources Conservation data collected in the field will play a critical role in striking a new balance A herd of zebras graze in the Okavango Delta animal sightings like this typically occur through dense verdant brush.Photograph by Margarita SamsonovaTime to get to workFour canvas tents We’ve arrived at our home for the next two weeks “That’s a Mozambique spitting cobra,” booms the voice of our guide by way of a greeting as we pile out of the four-wheel-drive He’s pointing to a patch of grass through which thin “We almost never see snakes out in the open like this This is very lucky,” he insists sincerely as we walk the short distance to my bunk Our research base sits on the grounds of Mankwe a luxury safari lodge on the eastern fringe of the Delta that’s partnered with ACE to provide a base camp for voluntourists working with Christiaan Although guests at Mankwe have access to typical luxury resort amenities We bake our own bread in a fireside hole dug into the soil In contrast to the plush cabins at the main lodge our outpost has no wildlife fence — and definitely no swimming pool Keitopetse takes great pride in telling me we’re the only people camping in an area of 1,300 square miles The 42-year-old professional guide grew up in this area but took a serpentine route to end up in Christiaan’s research team When a schoolyard bully forced him out of the educational system Keitopetse was sent to work on a cattle post Unable to benefit from a traditional education he learned English in order to translate his bush knowledge passed down from his parents and grandparents The combined skills were enough to enable him to put more food on the table for his family and get his foot in the door with research projects One of the canvas tents for volunteers at the research camp at Mankwe.Photograph by Joe SillsKeitopetse is the leader of our seven-person crew: there’s me a Latvian documentary filmmaker and Tembos Seyamba a Botswanan tracker who’s Keitopetse’s right-hand man Our mission is to travel along the rugged roads of the outer Okavango Delta inching across the terrain while recording animal sightings and predator tracks this is done with Keitopetse shouting at us through the open back window of a Toyota Land Cruiser as Tembos keeps a keen eye on the landscape It only takes a few days to settle into the routine we fill a lunchbox with apples to snack on and drive to a designated section of dirt road where our data collection begins the rest of the team ride in the back of the truck Key to the mission is a tablet equipped with GPS and logging software that connects our findings with those of the rest of Christiaan’s team We manually input the species or predator tracks we see While driving along a grass-lined fire road we spot a secretary bird eating a puff adder tracks from a long-gone leopard and a wildebeest careening through a shallow pan of glassy water All animals are logged and will be built into population-map models that help conservationists inform their research we learn more about the animals and plants that make this part of the Okavango Delta unique We learn the logic behind the behaviour of every animal and we start to understand how ‘transecting’ — making observations along a predetermined straight route — is different from your average safari which has no scientific control applied to its movements A ‘spoor chart’ allows for quick identification of animal tracks.Photograph by Melanie VanzylAlthough animal encounters are plentiful Keitopetse refuses to promise us glimpses of Africa’s Big Five — the combination of lion buffalo and rhino that many travellers look to tick off using radios to swiftly ferry tourists between major sightings our guides are not tasked with manufacturing wildlife encounters for us and what we don’t see is as important for the data as what we do see As we crunch through another box of breakfast apples Keitopetse slows the Land Cruiser to a halt on a sandy stretch of road lined by low mopane trees we’d scoured massive swathes of brushland in search of signs like this The sight of recent prints is enough to send our crew into an uproar The voluntourists bound out from the back of the Land Cruiser; we have to get close to the ground for Keitopetse to teach us how to identify prints I snatch up the tablet to log the place where lion paws recently lingered and time of the sighting are all swiftly uploaded via satellite As the rest of the team trace the lions’ activity into the tree line I’m left alone to marvel at the scale of prints — each as large as my own hand This is the pay-off for hard-working voluntourists; the fruits of a slow safari it’s highly likely that you’re going to have another truck there if not another four or five,” says fellow voluntourist Julie Reynolds a veteran of luxury safari experiences in Kenya and South Africa we’re getting moments like this to ourselves We can also move around to get whatever angle we want We can take as long as we want to really watch and absorb the animals.” The arrival of the annual flood in the Okavango Delta causes river channels to burst their banks saturating floodplains and creating deposits of white sand.Photograph by James GiffordKeitopetse and Tembos deduce that the group of lions here were fully grown and rested in the road for a while before making their way into the mopane groves We track the pride’s trajectory for a few miles in the Land Cruiser before finding ourselves completely surrounded by dozens of excited grazing elephants gorging themselves on the trees An encounter with a herd this size is entirely new for me and a small detail that helps steel mine and Julie’s nerves as we quell our adrenaline and document each elephant Today’s observations will have significant scientific value for Christiaan it’s important not only to note the location and time of a sighting inform the routes that safari lodges are encouraged or discouraged from driving in the future They may also help the government decide where livestock grazing areas are allocated My memories of this day will occupy my daydreams for years to come; they’ll take pride of place among my dinner party anecdotes and flash upon my inner eye during dreary commutes But of far greater and more lasting value is the simple information we collected data that could have implications for the survival of generations of animals to come A yellow-billed hornbill searches the sands of the research camp for cicadas and invertebrates.Photograph by Joe SillsA herd of impala among the many animals logged when spotted on transect.Photograph by Margarita SamsonovaConflict and confluenceBack at camp Keitopetse pokes at a dubious stir-fry thrown together by myself and another member of the team there’s conflict between farmers and wildlife,” he tells me as the African sunset begins to burn orange over our canvas kitchen tent our conversation has turned to the issues facing the Delta “Farmers sometimes kill lions that break into corrals and eat their cattle children have to come home from school to help fix things and they miss out on learning in class.”  The expert guide is not only a spearhead of Christiaan’s wildlife monitoring effort he’s also a rancher with his own contingent of cattle and goats he’ll be one of the first to feel the impact And he knows all too well the ways wildlife can impact local livelihoods: although a fence separates the wild Okavango from the nearby farming plots Keitopetse recently lost most of his livestock to a clan of hyenas In a rapidly modernising nation with a growing population like Botswana it’s easy to see how some would regard wildlife as an obstacle to enterprise Christiaan whips out a laptop to elaborate on the issue are in the crosshairs: 90% of human conflict with lions occurs within 10 miles of conservation areas where the big cats roam beyond fences to find cattle two of the main ways of making a living are through livestock and tourism linked to wildlife,” he says kicking off his sandals and inviting the group to gather around a PowerPoint presentation on his screen livestock and climate change are going to create competition for water Tracker Tembos Seyamba (foreground) and Keitopetse Petros Kagande teach the team how to log a fresh set of leopard prints.Photograph by Joe SillsChristiaan’s data seeks to provide the people of Botswana with a roadmap to economic solutions before conflict arises is home to two of the 10 remaining mega populations of African lion are a key indicator of the health of the entire ecosystem “If there’s a disruption in the food chain lions are one place where you can pick up the response very quickly,” explains Christiaan his voice weighted by the gravity of work ahead to save the species A night plagued by dreams of barren grasslands and embattled big cats gives way to a glorious dawn While we’re out driving in the relative cool of morning a glimmer of gold catches my eye in the rain-soaked grass as we bump over a verge “Lion!” I stutter through the open back window slapping my hand on the roof of the Land Cruiser 11 o’clock!” As Keitopetse pumps the brakes I realise I’ve finally spotted something that isn’t a guinea fowl a large adult male — the first lion I’ve ever seen in the wild Its presence triggers a primal reaction in my bones I begin to understand what Christiaan feels is at stake in the Okavango Delta Separated from this radiant beast only by the open side of a pickup truck our team calmly gather the tablets and do what we have been trained to do In the hundreds of miles I’ve travelled during my stay with ACE we managed to add an incredible array of wildlife to the log By putting ourselves to work for the wildlife we were able to get boots on the ground in a way that drenched these encounters in meaning for me — more so At Maun’s Dusty Donkey Cafe property developers and miners are dining nearby all percolating with ambitions of saving wildlife building wealth or expanding their portfolios in this far-flung corner of Botswana the single-engine Cessna that introduced me to the Okavango awaits another cluster of tourists searching for a private glimpse of the Delta from the sky My understanding of this paradise has evolved over the weeks spent working alongside ardent conservationists and wildlife trackers What I discovered was a slice of wilderness in desperate need of a helping hand — one that anyone who has the time and determination can provide When to goJune to August is peak season for tourism average highs are around 25-30C and animals are easier to spot as they flock to dwindling watering holes hold a special beauty — average highs exceed 30C and there are some downpours pans are full and wildflowers are in bloom Where to stayMaun That was the statement released by Manchester City in response to Der Spiegel's reports on the football leaks documents They centre around UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules and compliance Der Spiegel's sports journalist Christoph Winterbach joined us to discuss the issue we focused on a story where it's very interesting for the English Football Association," he said they asked Manchester City about a player transfer He came from South America - Bruno Zuculini was his name - and Manchester City declared that he was under a TPO [third party ownership] structure They wanted to buy him and get rid of that structure They wanted to know what kind of companies financed this TPO scheme They kept asking for the funds that flowed into the company I guess what they were suspecting was that Manchester City had something to do with it "What we found in the football leaks documents is that actually the authority in Abu Dhabi where chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak works they found that a company on the Cayman Islands to put funds into a player investment tool to buy players with a TPO fund in South America "The Football Association kept asking questions about it and Manchester City did not tell them that they were actually involved in this company as well." Square1 A comprehensive dossier with documents from the Football Leaks trove appear to reveal a system that was well established for several years The Manchester City defensive wall is 7.4 meters (24 feet) high 109 years old and cost around 244 million euros and it is one of the reasons why the team is currently on track to win its fourth English Championship in five years and is in the Champions League quarter finals No other football club in the world spends as much money on players as Manchester City The CIES Football Observatory added up the transfer fees paid by the "Cityzens" over the last 10 years and arrived at a total of 1.7 billion euros The team’s financial resources seem unlimited it is owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan After the team from eastern Manchester spent decades wallowing in mediocrity ManCity quickly became one of the most successful clubs in the world after Mansour took over control in 2008 it looks as though the team can only be caught by FC Liverpool And Manchester once again looks set to advance to the semifinals of the Champions League – one year after losing in the final to Premier League rival FC Chelsea But the proximity of the English club to the authoritarian nation of United Arab Emirates is a political issue particularly since the political climate surrounding Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich changed for the worse following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine the spotlight on state influence in professional soccer has shown more brightly ManCity also invests significant amounts of money in defense off the field Club leadership employs some of the best-known and most expensive lawyers in Britain in the attempt to ward off accusations made against the team’s business practices and to slow down investigations into rules violations Club owner Mansour has only attended a single Manchester City match – back in August 2010 the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) banned the team from the Champions League for two years due to revelations published by DER SPIEGEL appealed the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) despite the existence of clear evidence for the questionable business practices employed by Manchester City The company Abu Dhabi United Group Investment & Development (ADUG) belongs to Sheikh Mansour and was the official owner of Manchester City from 2008 until last year when the team was transferred to a different company owned by Mansour Officials in UAE have consistently insisted that ADUG is a purely private company and Mansour’s involvement with the English team is a completely private investment a legal representative of the Finance Ministry in Abu Dhabi said that ADUG "is completely unconnected" to the government of UAE or the Emirate of Abu Dhabi Research in the Football Leaks documents has revealed that payments from ADUG to the club were cleared by a state office an Abu Dhabi government agency focused on providing strategic guidance obviously manages the accounts belonging to ADUG is head of the state investment fund and is also chairman of Manchester City He apparently approved money flows that were controlled by the government before ending up in the accounts of the football team Payment requests for agent fees were sent to the EAA’s general counsel with ManCity sending an invoice for the sponsorship company Etisalat to Omar Awad the finance director of the government agency "Omar works for the EAA and is very important and helpful in facilitating our financial administration of City," wrote Simon Pearce Were such a situation to play out in Germany it might look like this: The state-owned railway company Deutsche Bahn would be FC Bayern Munich's main sponsor but the club would send invoices for sponsorship money to a senior official in the Chancellery before then writing emails praising the financial services provided to the club by the government official the dividing lines between an authoritarian government and a private football club have become almost indistinguishable Neither Manchester City nor the EAA officials responded to a DER SPIEGEL request for comment The new revelations could create significant problems for the Premier League leaders the English football league has spent years investigating Manchester City According to information obtained by DER SPIEGEL that investigation is focusing on three primary allegations Underage players were allegedly pressured to sign contracts with Manchester City through monetary payments Club sponsors in Abu Dhabi are suspected of having provided only a portion of their payments to the club themselves with the majority apparently coming from Sheikh Mansour himself who is currently the trainer for the Italian national team but who spent the years from 2009 to 2013 as the trainer for ManCity is thought to have received a significant portion of his compensation secretly by way of a fictitious consultancy contract The Premier League declined to answer questions about its investigation Past requests for comment sent by DER SPIEGEL to Manchester City have consistently been responded to with a statement that does not address specific issues and which claims that material and quotes from the Football Leaks trove has been taken out of context DER SPIEGEL has chosen to provide comprehensive and contextual information for each of the allegations Evidence of Manchester City's close ties with the Abu Dhabi government can be found in this file: There are special rules in place for the protection of underage football talents from transferring players under the age of 16 across international borders And they are not allowed to provide monetary payments to underage players Numerous clubs have spent years routinely ignoring these provisions. Indeed, FIFA even temporarily banned FC Chelsea and Real Madrid from the transfer market due to such transgressions  Manchester City has had to pay both the English Football Association and FIFA at least 300,000 pounds for violations of the youth protection rules DER SPIEGEL has in the past reported on  hidden payments apparently made by Manchester City to the agent of Jadon Sancho In a case that has thus far flown under the radar the club transferred 14-year-old Brahim Díaz from Málaga CF to Manchester in late 2013 and apparently trained him in their academy for two years before being officially allowed to register him He was transferred in late 2013 from Málaga to Manchester training compensation is normally due for the original home club Manchester City brought Brahim to England at a time when no official transfer was possible it would likely have been difficult for the club to explain why they transferred money to the club in Málaga The internal documents also show that Brahim’s case wasn’t the only instance in which ADUG jumped in to cover the bills the Sheikh’s company apparently paid at least 4 million euros and 4 million pounds to a company belonging to the agent of club legend Yaya Touré the payments were apparently cleared by ManCity CEO Ferran Soriano and team chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak The board member Simon Pearce apparently guided the payments from the Abu Dhabi government agency companies and managers involved in these deals have provided comment on the allegations A dossier with evidence on this topic can be found here: Pearce played a leading role when it comes to a main accusation leveled against Manchester City by UEFA and the Premier League – the secretive financing of sponsorship payments by club owner Sheikh Mansour he controlled club business while also acting as a special adviser to agency head Mubarak Pearce managed communications with numerous club sponsors headquartered in UAE and was also the contact person for members of the ManCity finance department when it came to contractual details and payments from Abu Dhabi In 2018, DER SPIEGEL published a series of articles  about back-dated contracts sudden cash injections and "alternative sources" pertaining to the sponsorship payments Those articles described how Sheikh Mansour was apparently circumventing rules by disguising direct funding to the club as sponsorship payments The money in question was apparently sent to the companies based in Abu Dhabi which would then wire the money onwards to the club The system supposedly allowed the club to claim a low volume of direct investment by the owner and a higher total of marketing revenues – in direct violation of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules Those rules were designed to prevent clubs from spending more than they earn and thus sliding into financial difficulties or distorting competition on the pitch It has since become clear that the rules have failed and they are now to be replaced by a new set of regulations As a consequence of that series of articles UEFA banned the club from the Champions League for two years But the club managed to successfully appeal the ban before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which ruled that some of the accusations fall under the statute of limitations and that UEFA was unable to provide any evidence beyond that published by DER SPIEGEL Manchester City had supplied witnesses who vehemently denied the UEFA accusations CAS noted in its verdict that it saw no reason to believe these witnesses were lying The court asked him if he had "ever arranged any payments to be made to Etihad in relation to its sponsorship obligations of Manchester City Football Club?" His answer: "Absolutely An email that Pearce wrote in December 2013 to the COO of Etihad at the time stands in direct contradiction to that claim Pearce told the Swiss executive the precise sum that Etihad was to provide how much he – Pearce – had wired to Etihad for that purpose and what he still owed the airline DER SPIEGEL has already reported on this telltale email Manchester City labelled the DER SPIEGEL story "a cynical attempt to publicly re-litigate and undermine a case that has been fully adjudicated." The club has not responded to a renewed request for comment from DER SPIEGEL Etihad stated that "all financial obligations" related to the Man City sponsorship were the "sole liability and responsibility of Etihad Airways." Manchester City - Internal Emails Cast Doubt on Witness Testimony A comprehensive file with documents from the Football Leaks database provides evidence of a system that was apparently used for several years: a portion of the sponsorship money coming from Abu Dhabi was booked internally as "owner investment" – a sum of 150 million pounds Pearce asked CFO Jorge Chumillas to provide an overview of ADUG payment obligations and asked that they be divided up according to "club direct payments" and "partner supplements." The documents clearly illuminate the importance of the additional supplements Pearce made it clear that Etihad only had to pay 8 million pounds of the total sponsoring sum of 67.5 million pounds the remaining 59.5 million pounds was extra – presumably paid by Sheikh Mansour the supplements from Abu Dhabi added up to 92.5 million pounds The information pertaining to these supplements was not meant to be shared with outsiders: "We mustn’t show the partner supplement if it is going outside the club," warned Andrew Widdowson Chumillas and Widdowson discussed money that was still to be paid by Abu Dhabi-based sponsors Aabar and Etisalat they differentiate between the amount being paid by ADUG and the sums for which the companies themselves were responsible we want all of these amounts to be paid by Aabar and Etisalat right?" The answer came: "Yes if they can." club representatives differentiated between a payment of 60.25 million pounds and the 8 million that Etihad "should be funding directly." Chumillas and Pearce again exchanged emails about the share of sponsorship money that was to come "direct" from the company The rest was apparently to come out of the budget of shareholder ADUG – Sheikh Mansour the 8-million-pound payment relating to Etihad’s sponsorship made yet another appearance Neither Manchester City nor Aabar and Etisalat responded to a request for comment You can download these and many other examples from the Football Leaks database here: Whereas the last two years of pandemic-related financial difficulties created significant problems for professional soccer teams across England and Europe Manchester City actually managed to increase its marketing revenues in the first corona season Manchester City was also able to add three new sponsors to its portfolio The Premier League has now decided to take a closer look at such deals Manchester City seems to have exhibited a surpassing amount of creativity club leadership turned to the Abu Dhabi-based football club Al Jazira – which is still today backed by Sheikh Mansour – to help conceal hidden salary payments to ManCity manager Roberto Mancini And the payments were processed by a familiar cast of characters: Simon Pearce and the Manchester City financial department The Italian coach was signed by Manchester City on Dec According to a preliminary agreement hammered out by the two sides Mancini was to be paid a base salary of 1.45 million pounds per season with another 4 million pounds in performance-based bonuses on top of that Mancini signed an apparent consultancy contract – part of which contained identical language to the main contract – with Al Jazira That deal promised him an annual salary of 1.75 million pounds for his services: "The Fees will be paid to an account nominated by your company and will be paid without deduction of any taxation." won the English Championship for the first time since 1968 The company initially named by Mancini to receive those fees was an entity called Sparkleglow Holdings he switched to a company registered in Rome called Italy International Services (IIS) But those invoices were only seemingly paid by Al Jazira: IIS would send its invoices to Manchester City the club would wire the money to ADUG which would then send it onward to Al Jazira before it was eventually paid to IIS The system was described by a ManCity employee in July 2012 with Simon Pearce confirming the procedure from the emirate's perspective Those involved declined to provide comment when approached by DER SPIEGEL The contract and the emails can be read here: DER SPIEGEL was the first to report on the case and it caused quite a commotion in England Pep Guardiola was even confronted at a press conference and asked if he had a similar arrangement with the team He did not answer the substance of the question The Premier League has been investigating Manchester City since December 2018 The league maintains financial rules similar to those of UEFA But the club has been doing all it can to fight the investigation – and the club has apparently been just as hostile to investigators as it has been to UEFA CAS fined ManCity 10 million euros for impeding the UEFA investigation and refusing to cooperate with the body’s Investigatory Chamber A case focused solely on the question as to whether the Premier League investigation may be reported on was pursued all the way to the second-most senior judge in the UK judiciary He ruled that reporting on the case was very much in the public interest that so little progress has been made after two and a half years – during which the Club has twice been crowned as Premier League champions," the court ruled The outcome of the Premier League investigation and the possible consequences for Manchester City remain to be seen Was a third party involved in the sponsoring money provided by Etihad an airline employee said that the government agency Executive Affairs Authority (EAA) provided two-thirds of the sponsorship total Neither Etihad nor ManCity nor the EAA wanted to comment on the email What role was played by City board member Simon Pearce who also worked as a consultant for the Abu Dhabi leadership at the time he told a City manager to send an invoice to Etihad and that the airline was prepared to pay "I understand that you now have the money." Did Etihad only pay 8 million pounds itself Simon Pearce told the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that it was a "misunderstanding." But in this mail from December 2013 he told the COO of Etihad that he had accidentally wired the airline too little money Etihad was to send the club 99 million pounds – "of which you will provide 8 million pounds." Pearce wrote that he would send the balance to the airline so that it could forward the money to the club Pearce and Etihad about the mail but received only general responses the approach proposed by Pearce was apparently not unusual "Thanks for everything!" he wrote to the club executive The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that it had not been proven that Etihad knew about the money flows planned by City Neither Baumgartner nor Etihad provided comment about this email when contacted CFO Jorge Chumillas and Simon Pearce took a closer look at the club's cash flow Chumillas writes that the club was due 34.5 million pounds from the Abu Dhabi-based company Etisalat should "recover" the remainder of 30 million pounds ADUG had apparently made payments on behalf of Etisalat in the past The company declined to comment on this email when contacted by DER SPIEGEL Chumillas summarized for Pearce how much money City was receiving from companies based in Abu Dhabi the companies only paid a small portion of the purported sponsorship sums contributed sponsorship money of 13.5 million pounds but only 1.5 million pounds was paid by the ADTA itself The agency declined to respond to a request for comment by DER SPIEGEL the Court of Arbitration for Sport wrote that it is possible that Simon Pearce had influence over sponsors located in Abu Dhabi he writes that because the investment firm Aabar is being taken over by the state fund Mubadala Home » Breeding » Hawwaam’s First Crop Enter Ring David Mollett writes that now standing at Wilgerbosdrift Stud Hawwaam is represented by nine yearlings on Thursday’s sale being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre His draft includes a half-brother to last season’s Horse-of-Year and has been consigned by Maine Chance Farms They have given the colt – an early foal – the strong name of Pivotal Role Crackerjack Hawwaam in action (Pic – Chase Liebenberg) will be one of the first to run his expert eye over the youngster when viewing opens on Tuesday and the bids for lot 63 should come fast and furious to two of the planet’s best auctioneers While it’s noticeable Wilgerbosdrift are not selling any of Hawwaam’s nine offspring Winterbach Stud are offering two colts by the son of Silvano First up for Hendrik Winterbach’s stud is lot 27 which understandably has the farm excited as this early foal (August 8) is a half-brother to Montien who represents Piet Botha’s stable in Saturday’s WSB Met His Louis The King gelding won the Gr 3 Cape Mile at Hollywoodbets Durbanville Winterbach’s other Hawwaam colt is lot 47 and this yearling is the fourth produce of the Captain Al mare Narrow Creek Stud send four yearlings to the sale and they include a daughter of Hawwaam also out of a Captain Al mare Ridgemont have a really good mix of sires in their 14-strong draft including the progeny of Vercingetorix Their Hawwaam offering is lot 59 a colt out of the six-time winning mare This youngster is a half-brother to Wrecking Ball who won six races including the Tommy Hotspur Handicap Avontuur Estate send a six-horse draft to the sale and perhaps their top lot will be their One World colt an 11-time winner and Champion Sprinter in SA in 2010/11 Avontuur’s magnificent Hawwaam daughter – Lot 24 Pippa Mickleburgh will be expecting plenty of interest in a daughter of Hawwaam (lot 24) whose dam The first Hawwaam yearling into the ring is a colt consigned by Millstream Farm This early foal is a half-brother to the four-time winner King Of The Delta and three-time winner The final Hawwaam to be offered is a bay colt named Jumpseat – a clever name as the dam is Boeing City This yearling has been consigned by Ambiance Stud who have a well-bred Rafeef colt (lot 76) who is a half-brother to Keep The Lights On and Clifton Crusher Mike De Kock saddled Hawwaam to five Gr1 wins and it will be interesting to see if the former champion trainer takes home any of his nine yearlings See the catalogue here.
