Great Britain Bobsleigh started 2025 with an historic World Cup win in Winterberg on Sunday afternoon
Arran Gulliver and Greg Cackett took gold in the blue ribband 4-man race in Germany in what was their first start together for 13 months
No non-German crew had won in Winterberg since Russia’s Alexander Zubkov in 2012 - a run that included 14 World Cup races and two World Championships - but the Brits went quickest in both heats to begin the new year in the perfect fashion
Hall and his team clocked a combined time of 1 minute 48.07 seconds to finish 19 hundredths of a second ahead of reigning back-to-back Olympic Champion and six-time 4-man World Champ Francesco Friedrich on his home ice and nearly half a second in front of Friedrich’s compatriot Adam Ammour in third
It is a second British gold in Winterberg this weekend after Matt Weston won the men’s skeleton on Friday morning
“To finish in first place here is incredible
It’s been a very long time since anyone other than the Germans have won here,” said Hall
whose team had to contend with a lengthy delay to start of the second run
We’ve won so many silvers here so it’s great to finally get gold
It’s also a bit of redemption for last year’s World Championships when we finished sixth when we’d wanted a medal
We didn’t know what to expect going into it because we saw a lot of snow and rain forecast
We came into it with Arran and Greg coming back from injuries and it was the first time Arran’s been on the sled since Innsbruck over a year ago
“The guys all did great - they gave me an awesome platform
“That put us in a great position in first after the first run but then the problems started with the forerunner crash
the lengthy delay and the other crashes in Run 2
“It was very difficult to manage the energy levels and keep your head but we did that really professionally and we put in another good start
“We’re extremely happy and we’re now hoping this is a stepping stone to being on top of the podium a few more times this season before we hit the World Championships in March.”
No fewer than five German pilots had won in Winterberg since Zubkov’s success 13 years ago (Friedrich; Johannes Lochner; Nico Walther and Maximilian Arndt) and the hosts had taken a clean a sweep of the medals at last year’s World Championships in the most recent top tier race at the track prior to today’s competition
The win was GB’s first since the exact same crew won in Altenberg in January 2023 - the last of three 4-man race wins that season - and it takes Hall’s World Cup medal tally to 23
GB were the second quickest starters in both heats in times of 5.09 and then 5.10 seconds despite the fact that the crew had not competed in a race together since December 2023 in Igls
Cackett and Gulliver last season and the latter not fit to compete in the first part of the current campaign
producing such impressive start times at the first time of asking is a massive statement as the countdown to the next Olympic Winter Games ticks close to a year
Italy’s Patrick Baumgartner was agonisingly close to a first world Cup medal as he finished fourth just 0.03 seconds behind Ammour
with Switzerland’s Michael Vogt in fifth and Lochner in sixth
Today’s sensational gold comes only 24 hours after Hall and Lawrence just missed out on a medal in the 2-man on Saturday as they finished as the top non-German sled in a 27-strong field
Hall and Lawrence were 0.28 seconds off the podium and exactly the same time clear of the South Korean sled in fifth as they clocked 1 minute 49.16 seconds over the two runs
They were the fourth fastest in both runs having been the sixth and then fifth quickest starters in going 5.21 and then 5.22 seconds off the top
Friedrich won his 50th 2-man World Cup gold as he beat Ammour by 0.21 seconds
The GB2 crew of Adam Baird and Olly Butterworth came 16th in a time of 1.50.15 and Baird and Butterworth finished equal 17th with Austin Milward and Alex Cartagena in today’s 4-man race in a time of 1 minute 49.79 seconds
The circuit heads to St Moritz in Switzerland next week
with skeleton action scheduled for Friday and bobsleigh for Saturday and Sunday at the spiritual home of sliding

schedule and how to watch the live action from Winterberg Old rivalries will be renewed in the battle for continental titles as the season’s sixth luge World Cup and the 2025 European Championships take place this weekend in Winterberg
With their wealth of sliding talent, Germany have often been favoured heading into previous European Championships. However, this year the tables have turned with the “hunted” becoming the “hunter” as Austrian luge specialists head to Winterberg in formidable form, having won all but one of the titles on offer in the last edition.
As well as European honours, World Cup points are up for grabs, with non-European nations eligible to compete in Winterberg while not ranking in the standings for the European Championships.
Read on to discover the athletes, schedule and how to watch the upcoming Luge European Championships in Germany.

the final result is what counts – the yellow jersey gives you an extra boost.”
who despite winning five World Championships golds has never been victorious at the European Championships
chasing women's singles gold in Winterberg is something she is relishing
As she told the International Luge Federation: “I have to chase now
but it’s also fun being the hunter instead of the hunted.”
Taubitz will be hunting down not one but two Austrian sliders in the women’s singles as she aims to improve on her third place in the World Cup standings while wresting the European titles back to Germany
with the top three separated by only 29 points

Two superb drives by Brad Hall, supported by the braking skills of Greg Cackett, Arran Gulliver and Royal Marine Taylor Lawrence, delivered a landmark win in the second four-man IBSF World Cup race of the season in Winterberg, Germany.
Taking a narrow first-heat lead into the second run, the British team held off stiff competition from three German sleds as well as those from Italy and Switzerland to finish with a combined time of 1 minute 48.07.
The victory was all the more impressive given the deteriorating track conditions caused by rain.
The result marks Team GB's first four-man win in Winterberg in 20 years.
Meanwhile, the second British sled, driven by Royal Marine Adam Baird and featuring the RAF's Alex Cartagena, finished 17th in a race marred by delays and crashes during the second heat.
Team Hall move second in the world four-man rankings and are fourth in the two-man as the World Cup moves to St Moritz next weekend.

at the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2012 in Innsbruck – where she was victorious – Jacqueline Lölling became European and world champion six years later in 2017
and won the IBSF Skeleton World Cup in 2017 and 2018
taking the silver medal behind Lizzy Yarnold (Great Britain)
Jacqueline Lölling began skeleton racing at age 12
she participated in her first international competition
on the Cesana Pariol Olympic track (Italy)
She was crowned German champion at age 15 in December 2011 and went to the first Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck in 2012 as the favourite
In a single heat (the first descent was cancelled due to weather conditions)
"It was difficult because of the snow
and now I am very happy that it has ended so well," reflected the German after the event
"We came to the track many times to prepare
After taking the bronze in the 2012 Junior World Championships in Igls
Jacqueline won two gold medals in her age category
in Winterberg in 2014 and in Altenberg in 2015
Jacqueline's second junior world title led to her selection for her first IBSF World Championships
she won the silver medal behind the Olympic champion
the German prodigy joined the World Cup circuit
and mounted the podium for each of her first three races (third in Altenberg
After just missing out on the podium (finishing fourth) at the European Championships in St Moritz
the national runner-up – to Tina Hermann – took two more World Cup podium places to finish second overall behind her compatriot
It was in 2017 that she advanced to the highest international level
with her first victory in the World Cup on 6 January in Altenberg
she won the European title in one heat on the Winterberg track with a lead of 0.16 seconds over the Austrian Janine Flock
before taking two World Championship gold medals on the Königsee track: in the mixed team event (men's skeleton
two-man bobsleigh and two-woman bobsleigh)
where she played a decisive role in securing Germany's victory
the youngest world champion of all time in her discipline by beating Tina Hermann by 0.25 seconds and Lizzy Yarnold by 0.73 seconds over three runs
the second run having been cancelled because of a snowstorm
Jacqueline prepared for PyeongChang 2018 in the most convincing of ways: the final of the skeleton World Cup was also an Olympic test event
taking place on 17 March on the Alpensia track
setting the sliding centre's first track record of 52.75 on her second run in the process
to take her third World Cup victory of the season and the overall title with a total of 1,591 points
world champion and winner of the Crystal Globe
Jacqueline explained that turn 9 of the track "is the most difficult"
and that she had to continue working "to find the perfect line
Jacqueline won the World Cup Crystal Globe for the second year running: four victories in nine races between November and January
At the Olympic event that began on 16 February 2018 at the Alpensia Sliding Centre
announced her arrival by placing second in the first heat
0.08 seconds behind Lizzy Yarnold (Great Britain)
with Flock trailing by 0.02 seconds and Yarnold by 0.1 seconds
A final effort allowed her to secure the silver medal
0.45 seconds behind a supersonic Yarnold in the fourth and final descent
The Olympic silver medallist was clearly delighted with the result: "In the final run
I felt an enormous amount of pressure because we were so close
It means a great deal to me to represent Germany
We have a very good team and I am pleased to be a part of it," she said after the event
Jacqueline Lölling still has many years ahead of her to add to her medal haul
and we will no doubt see her battling it out for gold at Beijing 2022
Brad Hall and Royal Marine Taylor Lawrence finished 4th in the fourth round of the two-man IBSF World Cup at Winterberg
The duo completed the run in 1 minute 49.16 seconds
just 0.9 seconds behind Germany's Francesco Friedrich
who set a new track record on his way to securing his 50th two-man World Cup win
Hall and Lawrence were edged out by two other German teams
who finished ahead of them in the standings
alongside PARA Ollie Butterworth in his debut two-man World Cup race
The four-man competition is set to take place tomorrow at Winterberg
It was a golden start to 2025 for the University of Bath-based British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association as their athletes enjoyed double delight at the IBSF World Cup in Winterberg
Brad Hall, Taylor Lawrence, Arran Gulliver and Greg Cackett made history on Sunday, becoming the first non-German team to win four-man bobsleigh gold at Winterberg in 13 years
The Brits were fastest on both runs as they clocked a combined time of 1:48.07 to finish 19 hundredths of a second ahead of reigning back-to-back Olympic Champion Francesco Friedrich on his home ice
The win was GB’s first four-man success since the exact same crew won in Altenberg in January 2023 and it takes Hall’s World Cup medal tally to 23
Bobsleigh success came 48 hours after Matt Weston had struck gold in the men’s skeleton to move top of the overall World Cup rankings
has secured a medal at every race so far this season
Amelia Coltman finished fifth in the women’s race
missing out on a medal by 0.19 seconds having sat second after the first run
The circuit now heads to St Moritz in Switzerland
with skeleton action scheduled for Friday 10th January followed by bobsleigh on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th

British Skeleton started the new year with World Cup gold as Matt Weston won in Winterberg on Friday morning
who became the country’s first men’s Overall World Cup Champion for 16 years last season
beat the rest of the field by more than half a second in Germany
The 27-year-old clocked 1 minute 53.12 seconds at the track where he won World Championship silver a year ago
Weston sat second by four hundredths of a second after the first run before blowing the field away in the final heat after improving from the seventh best start in Run 1 to the quickest in Run 2
He adds gold to three silvers and two bronze from the first five races of the 2024/25 campaign and now takes over from team mate Marcus Wyatt at the head of the World Cup standings with two races remaining
with Wyatt second with 1197 and reigning World and Olympic Champion Christopher Grotheer third with 1100
What a way to start the new year!” said Weston
but it’s been a while since I won gold and I desperately wanted one today
To get that in the first race after Christmas means it’s pretty much a dream start to 2025
“The weather was pretty unpredictable and tough to deal with
Marcus got dealt a bad hand and it was really difficult to get a good push out of the spur because of the snow
“I was really happy with Run 2: it was really smooth and I pushed well when it mattered most
“I’m determined to retain my World Cup title and I want my World Championship crown back so today is a decent confidence boost.”
Today’s win makes it back-to-back men’s golds for Great Britain after Wyatt pipped Weston to first place in Sigulda before Christmas
It takes British Skeleton’s World Cup medal total to 14 this term
eclipsing the historic tally they set in 2022/23
with fellow Brit Laurence Bostock 16th in a 39-strong field on his first World Cup start since 2022
Austria’s Samuel Maier took silver 0.58 seconds shy of Weston as Grotheer won bronze on home ice
Ukraine’s Vladyslav Heraskevych matched his career best by finishing fourth
Matt Weston won his sixth medal in as many races
Amelia Coltman finished fifth in the women’s race as she missed out on a medal by 0.19 seconds
The 28-year-old was in silver medal position after the first run and on target to add to the gold she won in South Korea earlier this season but dropped back in Run 2 as she clocked an overall time of 1 minute 57.14 seconds
Freya Tarbit placed 13th and Tabby Stoecker 16th as they came down in 1.57.39 and 1.57.61 respectively
The British trio all sit inside the top eight in the world rankings with just two races to go this term
Coltman moves up to fourth in the overall standings
with Tarbit fifth and Stoecker eighth as GB targets a first female overall medalist since double Olympic Champion Lizzy Yarnold a decade ago
Austria’s Janine Flock took gold in Winterberg
meaning she has now won more skeleton World Cup medals than any other woman in history
Anna Fernstaedt won silver and Olympic Champion Hannah Neise claimed bronze
Neise leads the overall standings from Flock
with Kimberley Bos in front of Coltman and Tarbit
Great Britain then missed out on a medal in the skeleton team event as late start draws amid deteriorating track conditions and a false start made victory in Winterberg a challenge too far
With the two British teams starting last of the 36 sleds
Stoecker and Wyatt were seventh after Stoecker fell foul of the reaction timing rule that only features in the team event
Wyatt was the third fastest of the male sliders but the false start left them with too much to do to make the podium a month after they won the first team race of the season in Altenberg
Weston was again the quickest male athlete on the day but Coltman came down 11th of the women
leaving their combined time just over a second shy of race winners Dan Zhao and Qinwei of China
Flock and Maier won silver for Austria and China took bronze via Yuxi Li and Zheng Lin
Bobsleigh takes central stage over the weekend
with two British teams entered in the 2-man event on Saturday before the women’s and 4-man action on Sunday
with skeleton action scheduled for Friday morning and afternoon at the spiritual home of sliding
Jaroslav Rudis’s latest novel follows the 99-year-old Wenzel Winterberg
on what is a quirky European take on the buddy road-trip story
Marx claimed that ‘men make their own history’
with the weight of dead generations upon them
with the old man proclaiming: ‘The Battle of Königgrätz runs through my heart.’ He then rambles on about its ‘half a million ghosts’
before blaming the battle for the loss of his first wife
and condemned the surviving families and the rest of Central Europe to the tragic 20th century
It is difficult for the reader to distinguish the wit from the calamity
but the writing is all the more compelling for that
Following this dramatically reductive introduction to modern European history
told through the ranting of a nonagenarian
we find ourselves journeying with the unlikely couple on a rail journey from Berlin to Sarajevo
to investigate the death of Winterberg’s fiancée in 1938
Winterberg remains obsessed with the fate of Lenka Morgenstern and decides that before he dies he must discover who her murderer was
and both men find themselves leaving Berlin by train

fintech consultant Bill Winterberg found himself taking on a new role
Without live conferences, there was no more video coverage to produce for the FPPad website
Nor was there a need to travel to client sites
But Covid-19-related challenges at his local school district created a new opportunity
“That was my full-time job for the last two years
I also did some work in video production for a local health care institution because they had to pivot to virtual work.”
While Kitces and Moore are already well-known voices in the field
Winterberg said he can add to the company’s capacity to execute on plans
“Most people who know Michael … the guy never stops
It seems like he never sleeps,” Winterberg said
“I’m another resource in terms of creating that content that resonates with the AdvicePay audience and taking things off their plate so the burden is not fully on them.”
Part of the job will mean continuing what he did at FPPad — creating digital content
campaigns and engagement strategies to educate independent advisers
large RIAs and even broker-dealers on how they can introduce the fee-for-service business model that AdvicePay supports
Winterberg will also be guiding product strategy so the fintech fits what various advisory firms
providers and clients are demanding in terms of functionality and transparency
“I understand the opportunities in the marketplace and will drive the AdvicePay road map so we’re the leading technology player in the fee-for-service trend,” he said
[More: Advisers are adopting fee-for-planning models — and charging accordingly]
Winterberg will also be heading up partnerships with other technology vendors to create integrations between AdvicePay and the rest of advisers’ tech stacks
Winterberg first met Kitces in 2005 as fellow young financial planners in Maryland
and Moore subscribed to FPPad in the early days of launching his planning career
Winterberg has worked closely with both of them since then
acting as a judge for the XYPN conference’s fintech competition and contributing articles to Kitces’ website
“We’ve known and admired Bill’s efforts to support advisor technology and expand advisor innovation throughout the last decade,” Kitces said in a statement
“He’s been a big promoter and supporter of the fee-for-advice financial planning approach
and we couldn’t be more delighted to have him help drive our growth strategy here at AdvicePay and expand the reach of financial planning to the next generation of clients.”
Winterberg will be working full-time for AdvicePay and plans to sunset the FPPad brand
