Constructed out of the creative revolution that shaped Europe at the dawn of the 20th century
More stately 1,035-square-meter manse embodies the era’s prosperity and artistic flourish
Anyone who has navigated Hamburg by car may be familiar with the quirks of the Sierichstraße
a two-lane road that runs between the city center and northern suburbs
near the city’s huge hub of water-based fun that is Outer Alster Lake
Sierichstraße is known as Hamburg’s most famous one-way street—except it’s not actually one way
When planners in the early ’60s needed to find a way to accommodate increasingly heavy traffic
rather than chopping down the mature oak trees that line the road and widening it
the traffic flows in one direction; in the afternoon
a source of endless confusion to newcomers to the city
But less widely known is the story of the man after whom it’s named
a luxuriantly bearded 19th-century merchant
inherited a farm in Winterhude—a village just outside the city limits—and set about developing it as a desirable district by building homes and making its canal navigable to attract industry
Winterhude had officially become integrated into the city
And life there today for its affluent residents revolves around the water or the 120-hectare green lung that is Stadtpark—more than a third of which was once Sierich’s private forest
A rare private dock opens the door to one of the Alster River’s most exclusive coves
That makes it the most expensive property currently for sale in Hamburg. “What clients really want is freestanding. And this is the best lakefront location in Hamburg,” Witzel comments. “Buyers in the villa market are often looking for a specific combination of features, including a south- or west-facing garden to make the most of the sun, and a parking place—this home has separate, drivable entrances in and out—and so few properties have that.”
From its stately salons to its expansive reception rooms and terraces, the home evokes the glamour ... More of high-society gatherings, both past and present.
Before you marvel at the interiors, though, there’s the location to get to grips with. “It’s high privacy, but you can get to the inner city within three minutes by boat,” says Witzel, pointing out that the Rondeel merges into a canal that leads to the inner-city Alster Lake.
The amphibious lifestyle is a hit with Hamburg’s upper-earning echelons, who are either those bored with sitting in traffic jams or eco-entrepreneurs who like to showcase their green credentials by navigating the city by bike or boat. Since Covid, wealthy buyers the world over have been seeking that rural-living-in-a-city combination. Throw in some prime waterfront, too, and the words “trophy property” start to get bandied around.
A generous interior footprint gives way to luxury living spaces like a wine cellar
Germany’s second biggest city doesn’t compete with Berlin or Frankfurt in the consciousness of buyers from outside of Europe
Art Nouveau-inspired details and masterful millwork speak to the skill of the period’s finest ... More craftsmen.
If there’s a property to whet buyers’ appetites, this is surely it. “It’s overwhelming,” says Witzel of the emotion at stepping into an entrance hall whose richly warm wood-paneled walls and ceiling feature ornate original marquetry—with paintings integrated into the woodwork—from the 1890s. Look up and you’ll see the decorative Art Nouveau glass cupola that radiates light throughout the three floors.
In contrast comes the soothing whiteness and Art Nouveau elegance of the adjoining reception room whose French doors lead into the Winter Garden—a sumptuous sanctuary, with its billowing floor-to-ceiling curtains and crystal chandelier, that opens up on to the garden “like a private park,” says Witzel. Where the lawn meets the water is a wooden deck, plus two electric boats included in the sale. Hamburg’s height of waterfront living is truly on tap here.
Decorative details and woodwork remain true to the Wilhelminian era
The villa’s historic grandeur and art may be worthy of a museum—offer the right price
and the owner may be inclined to leave the artworks
Witzel suggests—but this is a home designed for family life too
you may not expect to find a pink disco room in the basement—but
dotcom millionaires’ kids are like any others
and with the owner rarely in Hamburg for long these days and downsizing to an apartment with a concierge
this is a gilded opportunity for the next generation seeking the opulence of a standalone villa on Hamburg’s premier pond
for those who prefer to avoid the idiosyncrasies of the road named in honor of its original owner and paddle their way into town instead

Often, a gentle pling testifies to special moments: Whether it's a birthday party, a graduation or simply a wonderful moment underlined with a remarkable drop of wine. Peter Koch supplies connoisseurs in Winterhude and beyond with the right wine for every occasion in his wine shop, Pit's Wein.
His logo - two wine glasses toasting each other - is a self-explanatory programme. But Pit, Peter's nickname, not only has one or two special bottles to offer. He knows how to tell a special story about each of them. And listening to him is a pleasure. As soon as he starts talking, you think you can see the Sicilian vines in your mind's eye, and you can already sense the sea breeze on your palate.
He raves about one of his current favourite bottles: a Grillo Mozia 2021 from the small island of Mozia, a few kilometres from the Sicilian mainland. "The island wine from the autochthonous Grillo grape variety naturally benefits from the Italian sun and the cooling coastal wind," the wine connoisseur reveals.
A small selection of delicacies such as oils, sugo and pasta (spaghetti and fusilli) complete Pit's wine range. At the moment, the Portuguese vineyards are particularly close to his heart, and he is currently delving into them in order to expand the range in the shop: "There are such great wines and growing regions there," he begins to rave about the Douro Valley, for example.
With so much passion for the juice of the vine, it is little wonder that Peter once turned his hobby of wine into a profession. You immediately feel the passion and expertise around each of his bottles when you enter his cosy little shop. And so you go in search of a new favourite bottle and let Pit tell you something about it.
For him, wine is much more than a drink; it is an experience to be shared and enjoyed with friends and loved ones. It is a matter of honour that one or two glasses are also enjoyed on-site. The perfect place for this is undoubtedly the lush olive tree and bench in front of the shop - a great place for a toast.

Since the beginning of July 2022, you can taste the Codos coffee philosophy at Mühlenkamp in Winterhude. The philosophy is simple and complex: to serve every guest the perfect cup of coffee. The basis for this ambitious project is the in-house roastery in Hamburg Ottensen and, of course, the raw material, which the Codos team obtains from small coffee farmers whose growing regions are Central and South America.
On the company's website, interested fragrant lovers can get a deeper insight into the origin of the coffee beans. Then, you can taste the love for the natural product in a cup of Codos coffee. Codos coffees are offered in different roasting degrees and flavours.
Cakes and other baked goods are provided for physical well-being on a more substantial level. These come from their own bakery, Black Apron, and taste as good and fresh as they look. We had the pleasure of enjoying the tender and cool-melting New York Cheesecake. The graham crackers are homemade to achieve their crunchy base and the sour cream for its creamy mixture. My companion delighted her palate with a tart with peanut filling and a coating of dark chocolate. Yummy!
The history of Codos began in 2014 in Hamburg with a small brew bar in Schanze, which had not existed for a few months. In addition to the aforementioned roastery, however, there are now 3 more cafés in Hamburg. And fortunately, now also in Winterhude. We are curious to see how and where the story of Codos will develop further. Still, for the moment, we can say that anyone who enjoys homemade delicacies and delicious cafés should stop here without any ifs or buts.
SINGAPORE -- For millions of homeless people around the world
finding shelter from the elements can be a challenge
Extreme winter cold and summer heat can be fatal to people who aren't sufficiently protected
the triple-layer weatherproof fabric is draped over a basic structure assembled from common PVC pipes
The idea is for people to find or purchase the inexpensive pipes on their own
so the tent fabric and joint parts can be shipped to them more easily
Here's Kumar demonstrating how to set up the tent in roughly 15 minutes:
Kumar told Mashable that he first sketched out the tent's design in 2014
The most recent version is the eighth iteration
which includes trimmings such as ventilation windows
The team also decided to make the fabric drape reversible -- in the winter
billionBricks is now raising funds on Kickstarter to try and provide 500 tents to families in need
They first concluded a small six-month pilot in New Delhi
in which 15 homeless families were sheltered through winter and summer months
and they said that this initial testing was very positive
such as built-in lighting -- a feature that might find its way into the next design upgrade with solar lights
Some families have also requested larger tents
The structures are designed to hold two adults and three children
but Kumar noticed families of up to seven sleeping in them
"I saw (the tent) as an emergency shelter for winter
They said it was the first home they've had in years," he said
billionBricks is working with other non-profits and governments to reach more homeless people with the product
The company plans for these groups to fund the tents
but is also working on a financing plan that would let homeless people pay for their tents over time
Its next test project will be far more ambitious
with plans to send 1,000 WinterHyde tents to countries in South Asia by the end of the year
But billionBricks faces more barriers than simply reaching the homeless
"I've faced a lot of lack of urgency on the ground
Some media coverage -- but no heads roll."
Kumar also told Mashable that WeatherHYDE is just the first step in the billionBricks plan for a more sustainable future in communities most hard-hit by high levels of homelessness
They are now working on building up public institutions
using old containers and helping to provide basic services to the most disadvantaged
The next step is to try and install solar panels into the tents
could be used by the families to be sold back into the electric grid

The unmistakable aesthetics of the Arne Jacobsen House lies in its reduced design language and functionality. By 2027, modern, flexibly divisible working units, communal areas and new views over Hamburg are to be created on an area of around 50,000 m².
The Domstrasse project is located in the heart of Hamburg. The architectural firm CARSTEN ROTH won the competition and is responsible for the planned new office buildings. Around 13,300 m² of office space, rental apartments and approx. 1,250 m² for retail and gastronomy are being built on the site.
Überseequartier will be the most metropolitan quarter in the HafenCity district. Over 6,000 jobs will be created here. Providing 23 % retail space, there will also be space for restaurants, entertainment, offices, hotels and residential units.
Alster-Gate is a prestigious, centrally located business location and a beacon of modern work culture. Situated close to Hamburg's city centre and the Outer Alster lake, the site will be a new urban landmark with excellent connectivity to Hamburg's public transport network.
The Innovation Port is being built modularly and in several construction phases. The largest construction phase of the HAMBURG INNOVATION PORT, "HIP Two", measuring 20,000 m², is currently under development - once all construction work has been completed, the innovation center will comprise around 60,000 m² of gross floor space for around 2,500 workplaces.
The new Spaldinghof, an office building with eight upper floors and three basement floors, is being built in a central location in Hamburg. As a two-pane building, the Spaldinghof offers an optimal building structure - the floor-to-ceiling window fronts of the above-ground floors create a light-flooded and modern working atmosphere on approx. 1,700 m² of office space.
Real estate developer Procom is planning to develop a multi-purpose quarter at the Nikolaifleet canal, featuring high-end office space, approx. 150 apartments, alongside eateries and retail space.
The success story of Alter Wall continues further: the new design concept developed by Winking Froh Architekten for the road section towards Rödingsmarkt impresses with its lively, attractive mix of office, hotel, retail and residential space.
The Hamburg-Altona ICE train station will be a visionary landmark – for the district of Altona as well as for Hamburg as a whole. In the urban development of Altona Nord, this large-scale project already plays an integral role.
RODENWORKS is a high-quality new building in Rothenburgsort with a unique charisma - here the office or commercial enterprise becomes a workplace that you look forward to every day anew. The special architecture and its construction quality allow for a wide variety of uses.
Creating new spaces in the heart of St. Pauli: That is the idea behind the “Paulihaus” project, an innovative office and commercial building that will be built between Rindermarkthalle and Neuer Pferdemarkt on Budapester Strasse by 2025.
Since 2023, a new location for communication and business, as well as for innovative forms of work, is being developed on the New Work Campus, a site comprising approx. 7,500 m² .
We will be happy to assist you with important decisions about relocating your company.

The Collectors Room, located not far from Aussenalster at Maria-Louisen-Strasse, exhibits the work of young, up-and-coming artists in changing exhibitions. This room was conceived and created by Andrea von Götz, who started out as a collector and, in her own words, stumbled into the art business.
Once there, she discovered a lack of platforms, especially for young artists. This lack of opportunities to make art and artists visible contradicts Andrea von Goetz's concern to bring art closer to the people. Art can be an important, binding element for a society that sees itself as liberal. It points out, draws attention, provokes, questions, and discusses socially relevant issues.
And so, the collector, curator, mediator, and networker has committed to promoting young artists since 2007. In addition, she develops and realizes concepts in the field of art and culture through her office VGS Art Development, founded in 2011, and advises private individuals and companies on the acquisition of contemporary art.
Since 3 December 2021, the exhibition "JUST BELIEVE IN ME. IT'S THE ONLY THING THAT I NEED" with the works of Kazunori Kura takes place at the Collectors Room. Artist Eduardo Palomares describes Kazunori Kura's works as follows: "An artistic and historical interpretation of reality. To understand this reality, he works with the essential aspects of humanity. Religion, symbolism, history, politics and power."
Sitting in front of a white sheet of paper, a piece of material, standing in the landscape, Kazunori wants to create something. Something he can believe in. As multi-layered as Kazunori's works are, so are the techniques he masters and uses. Kazunori Kura works graphically, he sculptures, installs, writes, films, sounds, and so on. To make poetic and fictional structures visible in his works, Kura uses quotations from historical and scientific texts.
There is still some time to discover the works of this exciting young artist in Hamburg. The exhibition at Collectors Room will run at least until the end of January 2022. So hurry up and go there, I would like to shout to you.
"What do you believe in? And what do you rely on to draw? The line extends like a path you are walking. Just like the line is your life." - Excerpt from Vertical Story. Film. July 2019. Kazunori Kura

I do not like my bike any longer. While I've always been full of appreciation of my run-of-the-mill bicycle, I must now have a new one. Or two. Because I lost my heart to Puschi Schmidtkes Radsalon – a store with an abundance of two-wheeled beauties that'll make anyone weak in the knees!
Arndt-B. Janssen has always had a thing for bikes. At 14 he travelled through Norway on a racer. No distance was ever too far, no road too rocky. But his dream of owning a bike store only came true in 2009, after a first attempt at a career in IT. At Puschi Schmitkes Radsalon – a name that is a self creation and has obviously nothing to do with his real name, but sounds just so much better – you'll find bicycles that will exceed your expectations, in both quality and looks.
It is also the only store in Northern Germany that sells bikes by renowned British bicycle manufacturer Pashley. This long-established company from the UK has been crafting classic men's and women's bicycles since 1926. Each piece is unique and made with inexplicable passion and love for detail.
Everything is arranged and staged so perfectly, the store truly deserves the 'salon' in its name. Treating yourself to one of their new bicycles is nothing but pure joy. However, Puschki Schmidtke has a soft spot for broken bikes too, and offers an all-round service that takes care of any fixing, patching, mending or renewing necessary.
