Brett Cumming is pictured in front of the Burge Hotel
3 to Brett Cumming of Thunderstone Construction
changing hands after 25 years of ownership by Phillip and Carolyn Wirges
Cumming is a 2013 Holyoke High School graduate
and he said his plan on buying it was to turn it into an apartment complex
but he said it will still likely be a hotel at least for the next three years
so I’m going to renovate to get long-term rentals,” Cumming said
He plans to start renovating sometime in February to have two more apartments by the end of March
He said right now there are seven month-to-month apartments at the Burge
Cumming is no stranger to renovation or building
He is currently working on building his third house
and he has built a duplex and a house in Holyoke
He said it has always been his goal to have apartments in Holyoke
He also purchased the lot across Interocean Avenue from the Burge
Cumming said he will continue to work hard to keep the Burge up
and he noted that anyone looking for long-term apartments can call him at 970-854-2261
Carolyn said it was the right time to sell as she and Phillip head toward retirement
“We brought the building back to life,” she said
She added that there were a lot of fun small-world coincidences at the hotel
such as meeting people who were from where she grew up or knew people she knew
and the hunters were always great to get along with
Carolyn said that different things pushed the Burge at the right time
such as the construction of Melissa Memorial Hospital and the Cobblestone Inn & Suites

beloved husband of Patricia Dirk of Cypress County
He also leaves to cherish his memory two children
Marty Dirk (special friend Nadine) and Corinna (Robert) Wirges; five grandchildren
Brennon (Cymara) and their son Jaxon; Brittany
Don (Janis) Dirk and Larry (Alice) Dirk; one sister Bernice (Bruce) Creighton and one sister-in-law Julie Dirk as well as numerous nieces and nephews
He was predeceased by his parents Theresa and Michael Dirk; his daughter-in-law Kim Dirk and brothers Samuel
Grandpa or Papa and Great Grandpa) was born March 13th ,1942 in Empress Alberta to Mike and Theresa Dirk
He was second oldest of 8 children that were raised on the family farm
Harry went to school in Empress and worked on the farm until meeting a nurse at the Empress Hospital
Harry and Pat were married in the fall of 1963 and their children
Marty and Corinna came along in the years to follow
Harry was extremely proud of both of his children and spoke of their accomplishments often
In the early years the Dirk boys played a lot of hockey and Harry continued to play into the late 1970's
He was a Defenseman and let's just say he was often the first one in the thick of things when the opposing team needed to be set straight
Farming and ranching was a huge part of their lives and raising Registered Quarter Horses for over 47 years
Harry was always so proud to see their horses perform in the rodeo arena
standing beautifully at halter or pulling a calf to the branding irons in the spring
In the 80's he worked under a Saddle smith- built a team roping saddle and numerous pieces of tack
He thoroughly enjoyed working with leather
Although Harry never had any formal training as a Mechanic
the mechanical aspect of practically anything came very naturally to him
So when Marty started his business in Dunmore
Harry was on board to help and because of his knowledge and personal relations skills he soon became indispensable
He was Marty's right hand for over 20 years
Ole Man was still working there up until about a year ago
At this time the Parkinson's had made it impossible for Harry to drive
He still came in to The Shop for visits just to make sure things were going smooth
For many years Harry liked to don the blaze orange for November hunting season and loved to share his experiences
especially about the great non-typical buck he harvested
Papa and Gavin were just exchanging hunting stories on his last birthday
Fishing has always been a staple in our family
Where ever and whatever we were fishing for
Dad would always catch the first fish and somehow it would always be a Jack fish
it came to be that on any fishing expeditions he was known as Jack fish Harry
Harry professed to play the accordion and pulled it out at least once or twice a year to serenade us with "You are my Sunshine"
Oh how he loved to visit and was always able to strike up a conversation with anyone
loved a great home cooked meal but also loved eating out
Some of Papa's favorite treats were Kentucky Fried Chicken
wieners or tube steaks as he affectionately called them
chocolate bars and room temperature Coca Cola
Harry loved his family and will be sorely missed by all
If family and friends wish to pay their respects

Alex Eala made sure to make it count by getting off to a promising start
Eala made short work of qualifier Angelina Wirges of Germany
Philippine time) to advance to the round of 16 at the Tennis Club Petange in Luxembourg
The 18-year-old Eala converted on her only break point opportunity in the opening set to go up 4-2
This proved to be the difference as it provided Eala enough cushion to close out in the ninth game to win the first set without ever facing a break point
Eala once again built an early lead at 3-1
The 21-year-old Wirges had her moments in the second set
scoring her first break point of the match.
would not let her get back into the match as the Filipina teen tennis ace converted three break points of her own to pull away in the opening-round match which lasted one hour and 23 minutes.
19-year-old Denmark national player Johanne Svendsen.
Eala is looking for a strong showing in this week’s $40,000 ITF event to prop up her world ranking which has skidded to 204 from a high of 189.
will be fraught with top-notch competition
The field in Luxembourg includes two-time WTA champion and former world No

makes remarks during a groundbreaking ceremony for the Guam Medical Arts Center on Thursday
CEREMONY: A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site of the Medical Arts Center on Thursday
Cabot and Wirges are principals in the holding company that is developing the site
while Kunimoto is the architect for the project
Developers behind a $25 million medical arts plaza in Dededo gathered yesterday to break ground on the first phase of the project
three-story commercial building will rise on land across from the Guam Regional Medical City in Dededo
the product of a partnership between CW Holdings LLC
and the law offices of Cabot Mantanona LLP
diagnostic and therapeutic services and much more
Cabot said additional phases of the project may include other health and wellness-related stores and services
telemedicine education services for local nursing students and teletherapy services for military veterans who would otherwise have to fly off-island to receive treatment
work on the later phases could start over the next two to four years
while construction on the first two buildings is expected to get underway this year
Cabot told The Guam Daily Post the first building would be completed in 16 months
which Cabot explained began in its early stages 15 years ago
underwent major changes in relation to the status of the proposed larger military buildup and Marine Corps relocation in the early 2000s
Cabot said the original project had nothing to do with medicine
but was actually planned as a workforce housing village for 5,000 persons to accommodate the influx of H-2B visa workers initially expected to accompany military buildup projects
When the military buildup plan was downsized
additional worker housing facilities were no longer needed
When news came down that the buildup was delayed
Cabot said the developers had to go back to the drawing board
While he said they considered the initial project a failure
Cabot added they later realized they had the opportunity to pursue something far more worthwhile and beneficial for the people of Guam
Cabot spoke about his recently deceased father
who spent the last months of his life receiving treatment at GRMC
Cabot said he spent many long hours with his father talking endlessly about the great work being done by the health care professionals
but also "recognizing much more is needed in order to elevate the level of health care on our island."
"It takes a community to get a project like this off the ground," Cabot said
Cabot spent some time addressing the issue of veterans' care and the steps his project had taken to ensure Guam's veterans receive the treatment and benefits owed them for their service
of the veterans' advocacy consortium Team CORE
agreed with Cabot on the need to improve Guam's medical services
and added that medical care for veterans was especially lacking
Cabot also expressed thanks to a member of the local family who originally owned the property his group is developing
but was forced to sell the land to pay off legal fees as well as surveying and development costs
Aguon explained that while his family "does not support Chamorros selling Chamorro land," his family came together in support of the sale when they learned a hospital was interested in buying the property
my parents and grandparents talking about wishing that the hospital was closer (to northern residents)," he said
"I think Guam's residents still face challenges to accessing quality health care
Poll results are published every Monday in The Guam Daily Post
