Anibal Trejo)More than a century after its medieval centre served as the backdrop of Nosferatu a new Oscar-nominated remake is putting this Gothic city back on the map A gaunt vampire with menacing fingernails on the prow of a schooner looms before me when my eye caught the small plaque bearing a stylised vampire that stopped me in my tracks A loose adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula the silent film follows German real estate agent Thomas Hutter on his journey to Transylvania to meet Count Orlok mesmerised by Hutter's blood and a photograph of his wife Ellen follows him back to the fictional "Wisborg" (Wismar) where he spreads plague and death until Ellen sacrifices herself luring the vampire into the lethal rays of dawn The film's success, however, came at a cost. Stoker's widow sued the production company for copyright infringement and German courts ordered every copy of Nosferatu to be destroyed. Yet, like Count Orlok himself, the film refused to die: a few copies had already been made and were circulating in Europe Nosferatu's reach even extends to my current lodgings daggers and a taxidermy bat adorn the wall and fake spiders and cobwebs cling to every surface I'd initially dismissed it as some kind of quirky goth aesthetic Wismar still relishes its role as the real-life setting behind one of horror's most enduring tales Today, Wismar remains refreshingly crowd-free, welcoming mostly Germans to enjoy the brief Baltic summer. Its tourism season begins in March with Herring Days (15-30 March 2025) when "the whole market square smells of fried herring" drawing locals out like fresh blood for Count Orlok "The harbour scene in Nosferatu is iconic," Ursula Haselböck "Wismar's maritime history and old Hanseatic architecture create a very special atmosphere You can almost imagine Nosferatu creeping through the streets – it's definitely best explored in daylight!" • Measuring the 'White Lotus effect': How TV and film locations impact travel Essen: Germany's 'ugly duckling' city success Where people drink beer for breakfast Wismar is gearing up to welcome even more Nosferatu fans "The new Nosferatu film [is reawakening interest] in the Hanseatic city of Wismar," Donath said "We are expecting tourists from abroad and also younger German-speaking guests We are prepared: we have English-speaking guides and all people working in [the] tourism sector speak English too Of course, there's more to Wismar than Nosferatu. Situated at the southern tip of the Baltic Sea and a member of the Hanseatic League (a medieval network of maritime traders spread across central and northern Europe) Wismar's connection to the sea remains strong including three-hour cruises of the Wismar Bay and sailing to the island of Lieps to see seals.) After learning how to tie sailing knots from the crew it is easy to imagine Nosferatu's culminating scene when Orlok's vessel drifts into Wismar's port plague-infested rats are released and Orlok carries his coffin through the Wassertor towards Hutter's home As the water shimmers in the late-afternoon sun and the brick-red harbour turns tangerine I'm reminded of what Donath told me: "We would love to share our city with more of the world."  If you liked this story, sign up for The Essential List newsletter – a handpicked selection of features For more Travel stories from the BBC, follow us on Facebook, X and Instagram.  Why we're still talking about Maud WagnerHow America's first professional female tattooist broke through into an art form historically dominated by men. techniques and building types characteristic features of Hanseatic towns in the Baltic region as well as the development of defense systems in the Swedish period Criterion (iv): Stralsund and Wismar have crucial importance in the development of the building techniques and urban form that became typical of the Hanseatic trading towns well documented in the major parish churches the important views of both towns have been well maintained and the boundary of the medieval town can still be traced well in both cases Modern construction and industrial buildings have been located in the suburban areas It is thus possible to appreciate the silhouette of the historic townscapes without major changes The area is however susceptible to visual disruption by new development The damage suffered in World War II was relatively minor and a large amount of original architectural substance from the Middle Ages and subsequent periods has survived All features and structures to convey the components’ significance as leading centres of the Hanseatic league are preserved The towns contain a large number of authentic historic structures representing the evolution from the Hanseatic period to the Swedish era which were continuously inhabited and always the heart of urban life whose harbour remained intact and of importance for the economy in all epochs both cities have continuously preserved their use and can therefore be described as authentic with regard to their function Today’s high standards with regard to the preservation of monuments have been applied whereby highest priority is shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems completed the acquisition of the primary asset of the bankrupt MV Werften shipyard They plan to restart the shipbuilding operations in Wismar as part of a plan to expand capacity to meet new demand and possibly combine the German defense industry Planning and design operations are expected to begin shortly but shipbuilding will not resume till 2024 at the facilities that were idled in January 2022 as part of the financial collapse of their parent company Genting Hong Kong “I am delighted that with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems we have found a new owner who will uphold shipbuilding in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania over the long term and even expand it wherever feasible,” said Christoph Morgen who is acting as insolvency administrator of MV Werften He said after several months of negotiations TKMS has signed the contract for the Wismar yard calling it the best result for the insolvency creditors and the region I am also aware that the road to a fresh start will be long for the employees of the shipyard That is why I shall continue to do everything I can to shape the transition and to secure employment for as many employees as possible.” TKMS said the decision to expand its shipbuilding capacity is a result of strong demand in part created in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine Speaking at a press conference to announce the contract signing CEO of TKMS said the war in Ukraine had caused a "recalibration of security policy" reporting that naval vessels are in high demand The company expects that its orderbook will be full through at least 2030 they plan to ramp up the operations and begin building submarines at Wismar The first customer will be the German government with the shipyard projecting that it will grow to employ 800 people initially TKMS said that based on demand it might also elect to build corvettes or frigates at the yard and employment could rise to over 1,500 at the Wismar site that compares with nearly 2,000 employed by MV Werften and for most work will not begin until 2024 has identified encouraging prospects for the shipyard site,” said Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Minister of Economics Reinhard Meyer during the presentation “There is an opportunity with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to preserve as many jobs as possible in the maritime industry.” The parties agreed not to disclose the purchase price no the amount of TKMS’ commitment for investment into the site everyone involved called it a positive development coming quickly after the collapse of MV Werften the local government announced plans to extend the transfer company to provide a source of income till at least October for 470 remaining employees from the former MV Werften While TKMS committed to recruiting from the former employees and said it would offer positions to all of the trainees at MV Werften those jobs will not be available till 2024 we are sending a clear signal that Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is growing and intends to shape the future of this industry,” Burkhard told the former employees of MV Werften in an interview with the German outlet Welt he talked of his vision for a new "champion" for the industry that could include a combination between TKMS and Lürssen or German Naval Yards Kiel to create a powerhouse in naval construction.  The insolvency administrator has several other challenges to address as he continues to resolve the MV Werften bankruptcy TKMS agreed that operations at the Wismar site could continue to 2023 which provided Morgen an opportunity to still resolve the fate of the incomplete cruise ship Global Dream The building hall needs to be empty by the end of 2023 MV Werften had reached 80 percent completion on the first of the two giant cruise ships which The insolvency administrator of MV Werften has thus achieved the best result for the insolvency creditors and at the same time developed a strong outlook for the future: “I am delighted that with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems we have found a new owner who will uphold shipbuilding in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania over the long term and even expand it wherever feasible That is why I shall continue to do everything I can to shape the transition and to secure employment for as many employees as possible.” The parties agreed not to disclose the purchase price In addition to the necessary investments in the infrastructure further qualification of the staff is also necessary they will be recruited primarily from a transfer company set up for the former employees of MV Werften the employment of apprentices and the establishment of co-determination structures This was agreed by TKMS and IG Metall Coast we are sending a clear signal: ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems is growing and intends to shape the future of this industry The Wismar site and its employees have now been given the genuine prospect of a bright future Today is indeed a good day for both Wismar and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems,” CEO Oliver Burkhard told the employees This shipyard acquisition by TKMS is in anticipation of additional submarine orders In a recently released official document named “Projekte Sondervermögen „Bundeswehr“ 2022” the German Ministry of Defense provided some details on how it plans to invest the additional 100 Billion Euros voted by Bundetag to “modernize the armed forces”:Dimension See ~19.300 Mio Nachfolger Festrumpfschlauchboot (RHIB) 1010h The plan calls for five new K130 Batch II corvettes to replace the five in-service batch I corvettes The German Navy would then operation a single back of corvettes The Batch I ships could be sold second hand possibly to Baltic countries who lack surface combatants An option for up to two additional F126 next generation frigates will be lifted Between two and four more Type 212CD submarines will be procured. Two brothers, Brian Hermanstyne and Elden Hermanstyne both of Red Crescent Road, Mackenzie, who were accused of pushing a boat captain, Elick Alexander, overboard back in November 2022, were found not guilty yesterday by High Court Judge Jo-Ann Barlow yesterday. According to a police report, in November 2022, Alexander was allegedly pushed overboard at approximately 1 am on Saturday, about 40 feet off the Wismar shore in Linden. While the boat was about 40 feet off the Wismar shore, Alexander was allegedly shoved out of the boat. The boat then proceeded to north shore of the Demerara River. When the police arrived on the scene, they launch-ed a drone, and during the aerial search, the boat was located in the vicinity of Spieghtland with the two suspects inside. Alexander was not on the boat and a subsequent search for him proved futile. The body of the 55-year-old Wismar boat captain was recovered on the morning of November 20, 2022 in the Demerara River at around 10 am. The trial concluded yesterday morning after the prosecution closed its case. The Court found no case was made out against the accused and directed a formal verdict of not guilty against both brothers. They were represented by attorney-at-law Ronald Daniels. (Photo: Andreas Laible) The insolvency administrator of the MV Werften Group, Dr Christoph Morgen, today handed over the symbolic key of the Wismar shipyard to Bernard Meyer of Meyer Wismar. The shipyard, which has been owned by TKMS since June 2022, has been leased back by the insolvency administrator and subleased to Meyer Wismar for the completion of the cruise vessel located in the dock hall. Present at the handover were approximately 400 employees, who are as of today employed by Meyer Wismar. “Over the course of the past year, we set up good solutions for the three shipyard locations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Neptun Ship Design in Rostock, the prefabricated module plant in Wismar, the hotel in Wismar, as well as for Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven,” Dr Christoph Morgen, explained. “With the handover of the shipyard to Meyer Wismar we’re now marking the beginning of the next shipyard chapter." Insolvency administrator Dr Christoph Morgen also announced that the mass loans granted by the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for the shipyards in Wismar and Rostock-Warnemuende amounting to around 13 million euros plus interest, will be repaid in full in August 2023. Maritime Reporter E-News is the maritime industry's largest circulation and most authoritative ENews Service, delivered to your Email five times per week It was a child’s chore that inspired Steve Wismar ’72— Steve the Painter — to begin painting. Wismar and his younger brother were painting some furniture in the yard for their mom. Eventually, she let Wismar’s younger brother go play. In response to Steve Wismar’s complaints, she said: “You’re the better painter.” Almost 60 years later, Wismar runs a painting business in Hillsdale, but said he’s a drastically changed man. He came to Hillsdale College in 1968 — the year it was ranked as a party school in Playboy Magazine, he said. “We weren’t like you guys are now. We didn’t have a whole lot of interaction with the town,” Wismar said, adding that in contrast, the school is about 1000 percent improved since then. A Phi Sigma Kappa and avid player of the popular game “gut frisbee,” Wismar would occasionally visit his friend at the University of Michigan to “bask in the hippy-ness.” By the time he graduated in 1972 with a double major in history and political science, he was married and owned a janitorial service. In 1975, the drinking, smoking, and partying Wismar was radically transformed. After a coworker came back from a vacation talking about “being saved,” Wismar started to examine his own life and considered converting to Christianity. During the altar call at a fundamentalist church one night, Wismar said he was saved. “I stopped doing the things I did before and started doing the things I never dreamed I would do. I went to church. I was agreeing with God,” Wismar said. In addition to giving up drinking, smoking, and many other habits, Wismar developed a passion for the pro-life movement after a personal experience with abortion. “Somewhere in heaven, I have a child,” Wismar said. “I don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl, but I know for a fact it’s there. That’s the only child I’ve ever had. The Lord showed me, and I just couldn’t believe that it was first-degree murder.” He’s a heavy donor and occasional volunteer at the Alpha Omega Care Center now, and uses his story to evangelize. A changed man, Wismar worked as a social worker and in lumber yards before deciding to open a painting business called Steve the Painter about 15 years ago. He said he loves the process, which has a clear beginning, middle, and end. “The prep is what really makes a good paint job … and the finish is just gorgeous,” Wismar said. “It thrills me every time even after all these years to see the progression.” He and his coworkers paint buildings, exterior and interior, but Wismar prefers exteriors because people can see his work. He’s painted houses and buildings all over town, including the Chi Omega house on Hillsdale’s campus. When painting, he never listens to music, preferring instead to pray, think, meditate, and concentrate. “I’m the only contractor in the whole wide world that doesn’t have a radio going,” Wismar said. “I’m so radically changed. Because of the transformation, it’s easy for me to be calm and laid-back, but that’s just what I want to do: spend many, many hours working, more hours on books. Because what I really like about painting is meeting the people, going to do a quote. Everybody’s different, every job’s different.” Seniors Luke Martin and David Johnson, who were among four college students to work for Steve the Painter last summer and were nicknamed “Steve’s Boys,” said “many, many” hours of work might mean staying up all night to finish a paint job or working on Thanksgiving or Christmas. “He kind of runs his business like a charity,” Johnson said. “He’s always out of money. He tells a customer ‘it’s going to cost this much to do the house,’ and then he just decides ‘I’m going to replace their windows and fix the doors and stuff.” One of his sayings is: “If it needs to be done, then do it,” Martin said, and Wismar lives that out with every job. Wismar spent several months painting a church for free. When painting for pay, he gives quotes instead of estimates. If he decides to add an additional coat or other labor, he loses money. His friendly demeanor, identifiable “Steve-the-Painter” car, and paint-covered clothes have made him a known and loved member of the community, according to Martin and Johnson. “I’ve worked in the public all my life,” Wismar said. “People recognize me from the lumber yard that haven’t seen me in years, and volunteer activities.” Martin and Johnson said when they’re with Wismar, people come up to him about every 30 seconds to say hello or chat. “Everyone knows him. It’s impossible to go somewhere without seeing someone come up and talk to him for a couple seconds or minutes,” Martin said. In addition to meeting people through volunteering, Wismar has served as an elected official (a township supervisor) — the only area he’s used his political science and history majors, he said. In 2004, his name was on the same ballot as the presidential nominees. “It’s kind of neat to have your name on the ballot,” Wismar said. “Back in the days of the voting machines, we’d walk into the booth and put down ledgers to vote. I have a sample ballot from ’04. [Bush and I] were over here on the same ticket. Far removed, but same ticket.” Wismar hasn’t seen a movie in theaters since “Star Wars: A New Hope,” and he doesn’t watch TV, play sports, or listen to a lot of music. He said he’s cultivated an interest in classical music and local businesses. “He’s a charming relic in Hillsdale county that deserves some kind of recognition for all the things he’s done,” Martin said. Wismar never got angry at his workers — even when they had to redo an entire house of painting. His long wingspan helps his own painting, and he told his workers stories of his feats on ladders. But Martin and Johnson described him as a grandfather figure who influenced their lives positively. “I think he feels the story of everything that happened is a good way to evangelize to people,” Johnson said. He and Martin said Wismar inspired them to care more about doing a good job than getting paid well, although he was generous with pay. Wismar even replaced Johnson’s tire when it went flat. Wismar continues to attribute all of his good work and change to his conversion. His life can be summed up in John 3:6, he said: “You should not be surprised at my saying ‘You must be born again.’” Temporary arrangement will run until the ship is delivered in 2025 The Werften Group insolvency administrator has handed over the keys to its Wismar shipyard to German shipbuilding giant Meyer Werft managing owner Bernard Meyer. Wismar Weft, a part of the giant German shipbuilding group Meyer Werft, has agreed to sublet the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern-based Wismar shipyard from its current owner Thyssenkrupp to complete a 208,000-gt state-of-the-art cruise ship for Disney. Disney earlier came to an agreement with Meyer Weft to complete the ship after work was halted by the Werften Group’s insolvency. Details of these emerged last September when the company unveiled three new formats for its glass-film and glass-glass PV modules it said the smallest of the three module series will feature full black products with a size of 1,560 x 1,145mm and a maximum output of 350W The company will also offer a Full Black & Smart module series measuring 1,745 x 1,145mm Both series are available as glass-backsheet and glass-glass solar modules The largest product will feature glass-backsheet modules with a size of 2,110 x 1,145mm and an output of 490W The smaller solar modules are intended for use in the residential and commercial PV rooftop market while the most powerful are more suitable for ground-mounted PV projects we will work on P-type PERC but once this is stabilized we will also look into alternative cell technology to further improve on the power density and REC will be an important know-how source for us to improve here.” Sonnenstromfabrik will continue to primarily focus on Western Europe Sustainability is also a key priority for both REC and Sonnenstromfabrik Sonnenstromfabrik plans to extend its low carbon principles which were initially applied in 2016 for its modules on the French market it will carry out life cycle assessments for all of its products going forward and will also produce an annual sustainability report to track progress REC not only produces its wafers in Norway using hydro energy but it also focuses on upcycling kerf via a “unique new kerf processing technology” – during the standard wafer slicing process around 30% of the silicon remains as waste or kerf – to reuse it in cells and modules “This allows us to better protect the environment by avoiding mining activities and lowering the energy consumption by up to 85% compared to conventional Siemens-process as used mainly in China,” she added The company also produces “polysilicon with the lowest carbon footprint,” she added More articles from Becky Beetz Please be mindful of our community standards Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" By submitting this form you agree to pv magazine using your data for the purposes of publishing your comment Your personal data will only be disclosed or otherwise transmitted to third parties for the purposes of spam filtering or if this is necessary for technical maintenance of the website Any other transfer to third parties will not take place unless this is justified on the basis of applicable data protection regulations or if pv magazine is legally obliged to do so You may revoke this consent at any time with effect for the future in which case your personal data will be deleted immediately your data will be deleted if pv magazine has processed your request or the purpose of data storage is fulfilled Further information on data privacy can be found in our Data Protection Policy Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_2" ).setAttribute( "value" This website uses cookies to anonymously count visitor numbers. defendants’ cases Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill on Friday announced that developmental works for the four-lane bridge across the Demerara River in Wismar This disclosure was made by the minister at his year-end press conference held at the Ministry of Public Works’ boardroom in Wight’s Lane an elevated precast concrete girder bridge equipped with two traffic lanes and a footpath was proposed to replace the existing Wismar Bridge the design was amended to accommodate four lanes of traffic The design of the bridge was unveiled by Italy-based engineering firm – Politecnica Ingegneria ed Architettura Società Cooperativa – which was contracted by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure to conduct a feasibility study and prepare detailed designs for the construction they were able to generate four different designs for the new bridge he opined that the best option was the precast concrete girder bridge which is similar to the design of the existing bridge He informed that this bridge features a mid-range elevation with five spans at 44 metres each It is structurally recommended and will be constructed to accommodate all types of vehicles in Guyana The new location of the bridge over the Demerara River is proposed to be in proximity to the existing bridge it was also proposed that roundabouts be constructed at both ends of the bridge to accommodate an easy flow of traffic and have multi-thoroughfare access Reina explained that the design for the bridge was developed after several criteria were considered a traffic impact study was carried out to cater for the volume of traffic extrapolated 20 years into the future The bridge carries a minimum lifespan of 50 years with limited maintenance with an effective maintenance programme in place The mid-range of the bridge will be elevated to 11 metres Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo had revealed that the bridge is pegged to cost some US$35 million “We are at a stage where we are ready to start the negotiations We have had three offers and when the details emerge you will see the offers we received were very competitive…” he had told reporters He pointed out that the negotiations on behalf of the government were to be done by the team comprising Sukrishnalall Pasha (Finance Secretary) This is the same team that negotiated for the new Demerara Harbour Bridge and China Railway Construction Corporation Limited is the same company that was awarded the contract for the construction of that bridge Vice President Jagdeo announced the plans for the new bridge earlier this year The bridge is being funded under a US$200 million financial agreement with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Public Works Minister Juan Edghill also told Stabroek News a few months ago that the sum was increased from US$120 million to US$200 million to cater for the construction of the bridge That sum will also cover the reconstruction of the 73-kilometre-long which runs between Soesdyke and Linden in Guyana and other infrastructural projects A joint executive decision on modality and financing is being examined by the governments of Guyana and Suriname which include ministers from the ministries of Foreign Affairs “Once that evaluation report would have been agreed and the way forward declared by that joint team the two presidents would then announce the start of the work on the Corentyne River Bridge,” he said Stabroek News in June reported that Trinidad-based consultants had designed and proposed a two-section bridge connected by an island in the Corentyne River to link Guyana and Suriname The cost of the bridge along with other reports on the traffic projections/forecasts had said that the bridge will feature two lanes and will be able to accommodate a third in cases of emergencies or controlled conditions The bridge superstructure will have a total deck width of 12.4 metres including lanes and shoulders with the carriageway measuring 10.05 metres It will also have utilities inside the box Traveller (UK).It's 9am on a chilly March morning and I'm standing in the sunshine watching two men selling fish One is serving customers directly from his moored fishing boat the other from the docks at the Old Harbour in the port city of Wismar Between them are stacks of red and green crates a heap of plastic bags into which they slip their freshly caught and a blackboard scrawled with one word: herring Today is the first day of Wismar’s annual two-week herring festival and local fisherman Martin Saager is busy arranging wooden tables and benches next to a small white tent from which he and his colleagues will shortly be selling fried herring after fishing for his father’s company for almost a decade selling fish and chips and pickled herring and buying fish from elsewhere to supplement his own catch his offering is simple: fried herring with sliced white bread A fisherman fishing for herring in Warnemünde.Photograph by Celia ToppingHerring has been a staple food on Germany’s Baltic coast for centuries and it remains a vital resource for small-scale fisheries across the region the legacy of the so-called ‘silver of the sea’ is clear to see Three herring have a place on the city’s coat of arms and the wealth and power Wismar gained as a major trading centre of the Hanseatic League is home to a remarkable array of architecture from half-timbered medieval buildings and colourfully painted gabled houses to elaborate red brick gothic cathedrals a neoclassical town hall and a scattering of Swedish buildings that remain from that country’s 150-year rule here And while the former East German city didn’t make it through the Second World War unscathed many of its buildings have been carefully restored since the collapse of the GDR wood-panelled restaurant is adorned with maritime decor: framed maps and etchings hand-painted boats and ornamental stacks of stones her menu features dishes such as herring schnitzel with fried egg or her signature fried herring — “I use rye flour rather than wheat to make the skin crispy,” she explains — paired with stewed apple and onion or with fried potatoes and a handful of crunchy I instead order a pair of herring that have been preserved in a sweet and sour brine of sugar and vinegar mustard seeds and allspice before being browned in a pan garnished with rings of red onion and accompanied by a small bowl of fried potatoes This is an important lesson in proverbial books and covers A couple eat herring sandwiches on the harbour at Warnemünde.Photograph by Celia ToppingLater in the afternoon travelling east from Wismar through gently rolling grassy countryside dotted with wind turbines a district of the Hanseatic city of Rostock whose centre is some six miles further inland Warnemünde formed sometime around the turn of the 13th century as a small fishing village but by the early 1800s it had gained status as a seaside resort for the families of wealthy Rostock merchants it’s a popular tourist destination and a major stop for cruise liners a tall man with a white handlebar moustache who walks with me in the direction of the sea along the Alter Strom a canal lined on one side with lovingly renovated fishermen’s cottages some of which are now shops and restaurants Fishing cutters and sailing vessels bob about on the water and there’s a queue of people in winter coats waiting to buy fish sandwiches from an old East German boat “Those are used for selling to tourists,” Klaus tells me He then points to a strip of mobile stands on the east side of the canal We cross the canal on a 120-year-old swing bridge and make our way down the line of stands that make up Warnemünde’s fish market Chalkboards list potato soup and sausages in bread rolls Domed glass counters are crammed with rows of pickled herring sandwiches in shell-shaped buns stacks of plastic tubs of rollmops and matjes (fillets of young herring in salt brine) these small-scale fisheries also clean and sell their freshly caught fish from small shacks between the mobile stands they now have to buy in the ready-to-eat stuff in place all across Germany’s Baltic coast aim to address the fact that herring stocks have been producing fewer and fewer offspring — a result of both historic overfishing and the warming of the Baltic Sea when I’d spoken to Dr Christopher Zimmermann head of Rostock’s Thünen Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries he explained it’s likely to take “six to seven years to get [stocks] back to a good amount” adding it was “unlikely previous levels will ever be reached again” The effects of this have been felt throughout the region “There are 15 fishermen remaining in Warnemünde,” says Klaus Traditional rollmops – pickled herring fillets.Photograph by Celia ToppingA taste of the TeepottWe stroll back over the canal and down an alley turning into Alexandrinenstrasse — one of Warnemünde’s old streets lined with trees and more impeccably kept cottages arriving at a small square next to a sand-coloured 19th-century lighthouse that marks the start of Warnemünde’s seafront promenade he would be sent off to the beach in the mornings with his friends I’m hungry.’ She’d make fried potatoes with herring pale golden sand and grassy dunes stretching into the distance Warnemünde’s Blue Flag beach is the widest on Germany’s Baltic coast the promenade tapers off into a sandy path that disappears into the coastal forest of the Stoltera Nature Reserve From where I stand at the mouth of the Unterwarnow estuary and the end of the Alter Strom a pier stretches out into the deep blue water towards a green and white lighthouse beyond which a large Danish ferry chugs slowly towards the port is the rather incongruous curved concrete shell roof of the Teepott Building which has housed a beach restaurant since the late 1960s and is a striking example of the modernist architecture of the former GDR A shopping street in Wismar.Photograph by Celia ToppingA fisherman selling herring at Germany’s famous striped a salt-cured beef and potato dish that originated as sailors’ fare and incorporated whatever other rations were available on board Teepott’s version comes topped with a fried egg and garnished with slithers of pickled cucumber three shiny rollmops and two pink pieces of smoked char The labskaus itself vaguely resembles steak tartare and tastes a little like corned beef hash My final stop is the peninsula of Fischland-Darss-Zingst powdery beaches and the ancient beech forests of the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park located on a strip of land less than half a mile wide between the Baltic Sea and the Saaler Bodden lagoon A former fishing village and an artists’ colony in the late 1800s Ahrenshoop today is a small but popular holiday destination full of boutiques I wake early on my last morning to watch the sun rise on Ahrenshoop’s beautiful white beach fringed with orderly bristles of newly planted dune grass the sea is calm and the beach is bathed in a hazy pink light Gulls perch on wooden breakwater posts and there’s a sporadic quack from the ducks bobbing about near the shore I realise that once there would have been fishermen in the water at this time I think of the past centuries of fishing and trading the wealth and the success that herring brought communities all along the coast and I stand up and shake the sand off my coat wondering if I can’t fit in one last herring for breakfast before I go A ceramic container for marinated herring at Restaurant & Hotel Wismar.Photograph by Celia ToppingFour local favourites to trySea
