Texas – After rumors swirled for weeks that former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten would be on the Cowboys' new coaching staff in some capacity
he clarified that no conversations took place between and Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones
"I did not talk to Jerry about it," Witten said at the award ceremony for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year award
"I think they went through a thorough process for them and got to a place where they felt like Brian was the guy."
coaching at the professional level is something that Witten wants to do
and doing it for the Cowboys would be something he's interested in
"Of course that's a long term goal of mine one day to get back there when the right opportunity comes…" Witten said
"When the right time and the right opportunity comes
I'm excited to embark on that next chapter."
Witten is remaining as the head coach at Liberty Christian in Argyle
Texas where he's led the team to back-to-back state championships in 2023 and 2024
will play college football at Rice University next season as a linebacker
while Cooper is a rising junior who is already ranked as a four-star safety prospect with offers from 18 schools including his father's alma mater
"For me to be able to coach my sons and take over a program and win back to back state championships at that level
really special and memories that I'll keep with me for the rest of my life." Witten said
When people have called Witten to inquire about coaching jobs in the past
he's listened and will continue to do so going forward with no timetable as to when that jump could come
With a lot invested in the Dallas area with his family
about the potential of that happening when and if he decides to join a staff that could be outside of Dallas
and wants to be ready in all aspects of his life to do so
and you know that it's part of the gig…" Witten said
it's continuing to learn and grow and certainly if you join somebody's staff
you want it to be an opportunity that you can be equipped and be a sponge."
Jones spoke very highly of the prospect of Witten being a head coach in the NFL someday
and even compared him to former Cowboys tight end and current Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell
He reminds me a lot of our other tight end [Dan Campbell] who is head coach up there in Detroit right now..." Jones said on 105.3 The Fan
"Jason is very sophisticated when it comes to understanding football and all the nuances
he really does understand the physical and the mentality of being physical and that part of it
The former Bruin showed what he could do at UCLA
and he explained what NFL gamewreckers he's been studying to bring that same violence for the Cowboys
the Cowboys have added 30 new players to the roster
creating plenty of changes at each position
Former NFL head coach and current Boston College head coach Bill O'Brien has a unique perspective on the Cowboys' first two 2025 NFL Draft picks
He offered his perspective on the two and what they bring to Dallas
When Brian Schottenheimer became Cowboys' head coach
and that includes some that required looking in the mirror
It's been a long journey to the NFL for new Cowboys cornerback Shavon Revel Jr.
but he's finally gotten to where he's wanted to be his entire life
and now is looking to prove to everyone why he belongs
When Shemar James got the call from the Cowboys during the 2025 NFL Draft
the moment was as manifestation of everything he dreamt about his entire life
former Oregon wide receiver Traeshon Holden got his opportunity in the NFL when the Cowboys signed him
While all eyes might be on the first-round pick named Tyler
there's another player – Tyler Neville – whose journey to get here is why he calls himself "the luckiest guy on the planet."
New Cowboys defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku is ready to get to work in his new home
and prides himself on being a versatile "dawg" that can cause havoc in the backfield
The Cowboys hosted all 18 of their rookies at the Star in Frisco on Thursday to start the preparations for the team's rookie minicamp
Not content to use only one 2025 NFL Draft pick on a running back
the Cowboys launched one at Jaydon Blue and the other at Phil Mafah; and both appear ready for impact
the Cowboys had a successful result but there are still lingering questions

Former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is currently a high-school football coach
Jerry Jones thinks Witten could do a lot better than that
Appearing on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Friday
Jones was asked whether he believes Witten could be an NFL head coach
“Yes,” Jones said
He reminds me a lot of our other tight end who is head coach up there in Detroit right now
Jason is very sophisticated when it comes to understanding football and all the nuances
Given Witten’s connection to the Cowboys and Jones’s belief in Witten
it’s impossible to rule out Witten as a potential head coach of the Cowboys

It sounds as though team owner Jerry Jones was contemplating such a plan for the future if Mike McCarthy returned as the head coach next season.
Then there was another former Cowboys quarterback
who the organization installed as the quarterbacks coach in 2019
He was just 28 at the time and was promoted to offensive coordinator one year later
He also survived the coaching change from Garrett to McCarthy in 2020
which often isn't the case for coordinators
When McCarthy sought to take over play-calling duties ahead of the 2023 season
Moore and the Cowboys mutually parted ways
He served as the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator for one year before taking on the same role with the Philadelphia Eagles this season
Moore will likely be a candidate for the Dallas vacancy
and would certainly bring more NFL coaching experience to the table than Witten
who has won two state titles at the high school level for Liberty Christian in Argyle
but has never coached at the college or pro level
He did have an extremely successful playing career
earning 11 Pro Bowl bids and a pair of first-team All-Pro selections
The future Hall of Famer spent 16 of his 17 NFL seasons with the Cowboys and was always a fan favorite in Dallas
so Jones envisioning him as a future coach isn't much of a stretch
Installing him immediately as the head coach would be a huge gamble
at least until he has more experience at the NFL level
Jones could try to get Witten a position on the next head coach's staff
A former finance executive is accused of stealing almost $2.6 million from a South Jersey nonprofit that serves adults with disabilities
allegedly opened multiple bank accounts in the name of Occupational Training Center Services of Burlington County
then used them to divert money from the nonprofit
Stolen funds helped pay for two houses and a $43,000 motorcycle for Witten’s husband
the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office said
Lawyers for the couple could not be reached for immediate comment
Haddon Township protest: Show of support for Celal and Ermine Emanet
“The conduct alleged in this case is particularly harmful because (Witten) allegedly stole from an organization trying to help adults with disabilities," Attorney General Matthew Platkin said in announcing the charges Feb
the last year for which online tax returns are available
Witten was paid approximately $127,000 that year as the organization's controller
the nonprofit said it has improved its oversight measures and financial safeguards
It also noted the recovery of “a significant amount of the funds."
from May 2019 until the scheme was discovered in March 2024
according to a prosecution forfeiture filing
It said the scheme came to light when a client complained to OTC Services about having to pay the same bill twice
An OTC Service employee then learned the client’s original payment had been deposited in a secret account under Witten’s control
“I really don’t have much to say except I’m sorry(.) I have it and I will return it to you(.)”
please don’t let me lose my family please.”
Witten deposited more than $2 million into the account between April 2023 and March 2024
She withdrew more than $800,000 in a cashier’s check when closing the account
but returned it uncashed to the attorney general's office during the investigation
"Those funds were subsequently returned to (OTC Services)," the forfeiture filing said
It added that investigators also identified two accounts at another bank in the nonprofit’s name but controlled by Witten
The attorney general's office alleged Witten laundered the funds by directing more than $500,000 from OTC Services to ABC Landscaping
This money was used for a down payment of approximately $80,000 for a house in Buena Vista and for part of a down payment on a Gail Lane residence in Newfield
as well as her husband’s 2021 Harley-Davidson motorcycle
The attorney general's office alleged that the Wittens also used OTC Services funds for $100,000 in “earnest money” for the planned purchase of three homes in Egg Harbor Township and a second lawn care business
A title company turned over the $100,000 to the attorney general’s office
Witten is charged with theft by unlawful taking
She’s also accused of failing to pay federal taxes of $175,000 from July 2020 to April 2024
The Wittens have not been convicted in the case

With the Pro Football Hall of Fame shutting out Cowboys legend Darren Woodson once again
it's time to look ahead to the Class of 2026
And several Cowboys could well be in the mix for legitimate gold jacket talk next year
It will mean tough competition for the three Cowboys who can now make the ballot
Dontari Poe and Alfred Morris are also included in the first-year-eligible group
but their short Dallas stints are not what they'll be best remembered for.) They'll all be up against Woodson and the other finalists who didn't quite make the Canton cut in 2025
And don't forget the larger field of nominees who will be hoping that the committee reviews their careers in a more flattering light next time around
Here's a look at the Cowboys who could join the sport's immortal heroes in 2026
starting with the three in their first year of eligibility and followed by those who were among the original 167 under Hall of Fame consideration this year
TE Jason Witten (first-year eligible)On the surface
the Cowboys' all-time receptions and receiving yards leader would seem to be a lock for reaching Canton on the first ballot
The 11-time Pro Bowler missed exactly one game in his 17 seasons as a player and sits in 20th place all-time among the league's pass-catchers (second among tight ends) in yards
and maybe even Travis Kelce should all pass Witten by the time the 2026 Hall of Fame vote comes around
And with the committee permitted to name a maximum of just five modern-era players
it's difficult to imagine them giving more than two of those spots to guys who are up for the very first time
always contain a healthy does of "what if" conjecture
While he ended his incredible 11-year run in Dallas with 802 tackles (in the franchise's all-time top 10) and two Pro Bowl nods
Lee missed a third of the games played during his tenure due to injury
The cerebral second-round draft pick often acted as an unofficial coach on the sidelines while nursing many of those injuries
and his name still pops up any time there's an opening on the Cowboys defensive staff
His name will pop up for Hall of Fame consideration for the first time in 2026
Bryant is the Cowboys' all-time touchdown reception leader
And while the three-time Pro Bowler's place among the franchise's greats is secure
Bryant topped 1,000 yards in a season only three times in his career and currently ranks just 137th in career receiving yards leaguewide
A serious look for a gold jacket may not happen for Bryant
and certainly not in his first year of eligibility
there's nothing else to say about Woodson's Hall of Fame credentials
Woodson has been a finalist for Canton the last three years
but he now has just three years of consideration remaining as a modern-era player
which is statistically an even tougher path to enshrinement
OC Travis FrederickFrederick was first eligible for Hall discussion this past year
The first-round draft pick started every game over his first five seasons and earned a Pro Bowl nod in the last four of them
A diagnosis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome cost him the entire 2018 campaign
but he returned in 2019 to start every game and garner another Pro Bowl trip before announcing his retirement
“Big E” was on track to be perhaps one of the greatest offensive linemen in Cowboys history until a serious automobile accident sidelined him for the back half of his fourth NFL season
He returned to the field in 1995 and played another six seasons
Williams helped Dallas's dynasty teams of the ’90s win three Super Bowls
personally earning four Pro Bowl nods and first-team All-Pro accolades three times
The son of a former heavyweight boxing champ
Norton was a second-round draft pick by the Cowboys in 1988
He proved to be an instrumental part of the team’s turnaround from 1-15 doormats to back-to-back Super Bowl winners
earning two rings with the Cowboys before moving to San Francisco to claim another
Norton went on to a second career in coaching
Romo's is one of the more unlikely NFL success stories
The undrafted free agent didn’t get a combine invite and did nothing more than serve as the holder for placekicks for his first three pro seasons
But after replacing an ineffective Drew Bledsoe one night in 2006
he quickly became one of the most beloved Cowboys ever
and lead 28 fourth-quarter comebacks- all franchise records- en route to four Pro Bowl nods and six playoff appearances
But postseason victories eluded him (2-4 in his career); it could be the thing that keeps him out of Canton
DT La'Roi GloverA onetime fifth-round draft pick by the Raiders in 1996
Glover earned his reputation during a five-year stint in New Orleans before joining the Cowboys in 2002
He played for Dallas for four years- appearing in every single game over that time- and was named to the Pro Bowl in each of his seasons in Dallas

Texas – 2026 will mark the first year that former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will be eligible to be enshrined in football immortality in Canton
It's a moment that every football player dreams of
and is now inching closer towards being a reality for Witten
the first thing that stands out to me is I get chill bumps thinking about that." Witten said at the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award ceremony
Witten became the franchise's all-time leader in receptions (1,215) and yards (12,977) to go along with 72 touchdowns
He was a 11-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro
finishing his career with the second most receiving yards as a tight end in NFL history
and Witten recognizes the hallowed ground he could soon join
"There's this sacred ground that comes with it," Witten said
"I truly love the game of football and pro football and what it was able to teach me
I recognize how hard it is to get into that club
"Just to be mentioned on that list of guys that could potentially get in there
Witten's career ended after the 2020 season
and the five years that need to pass before being eligible for Hall of Fame induction has come and gone in a flash
Witten's watched the induction ceremony every year
you start watching the Hall of Fame and you say 'I played against that guy
what an unbelievable player,'" Witten said
one of the four inductees was former Chargers tight end Antonio Gates
a player that Witten has compared his career to
Antonio was somebody I watched and went against coming in the same year," Witten said
"Our careers were very similar in a lot of ways
you're happy for them and reach out to them and congratulate them on what an accomplishment that is."
two of his teammates will be up for the Hall of Fame as well
Former Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant and linebacker Sean Lee are eligible too
as the tandem hopes to reunite on the same team again one day in Canton
I'd be hard pressed to think that there was a better receiver over that four or five years than Dez," Witten said
"I could probably say the same thing about Sean when he was healthy and playing."
proud of those guys and what they've been able to accomplish
wish them the best on that journey as well."
Jason Witten’s name was mentioned as a potential candidate
It didn’t matter that he has no coaching experience above the high school level
Witten said Wednesday that he never heard from the Cowboys owner about the job
but he has dreams of becoming the team’s head coach in the future
“Sure, it’s a part of my long-term goals,” Witten said
I think they went through a thorough process for them and got to a place where they felt like Brian [Schottenheimer] was the guy
of course that’s a long-term goal of mine to one day get back there
I think for me to be able to coach my son and take over a program and win back-to-back state championships at that level
really special and memories that I’ll keep with me for the rest of my life
When that right time and the right opportunity comes
I’m excited to embark on that next chapter.”
Witten will not join the Cowboys’ staff for 2025
Witten will continue as the head coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle
He celebrated a second consecutive Texas state championship for private schools last fall
The DallasCowboys.com staff writers answer your questions here in 'Mailbag' presented by Miller Lite.)
the more I think about the decision the Lions made to hire Dan Campbell
I can't help but wonder if Jason Witten might be the perfect candidate to lead this team back to glory
I know Campbell had NFL coaching experience
but the Lions stunned everyone when they hired him
If Witten surrounds himself with an experienced staff
do you feel he'd be the right guy for the job
Or does he need to earn that role by being an NFL assistant for a few years
Patrik: I want it to be made clear that Jason Witten is one of my all-time favorite NFL (not just Cowboys') players in the history of the sport
and one of my favorite human beings as well
But neither of those two things qualify him
to be a successful head coach at this level and especially for a team as pressure-packed as the Cowboys
but includes zero experience above the high school level — adding to my point regarding the rampant inexperience and
because far more often than there is a Dan Campbell
I also believe he will one day make an exceptional head coach in the NFL
I could not be more all-in (sorry for that phrasing because
trauma response coming on your end) on making Witten a tight ends coach in Dallas in 2025
as long as it doesn't mean Lunda Wells has to leave the organization because that is something I'm very
Today's CowBite is from the latest episode of The Player's Lounge
When Jason Witten was playing for the Cowboys
the only player who started at tight end over him was Dan Campbell
And that was only for a short time back in 2003
To think that more than 20 years later we're talking about the two of them in the coaching ranks is crazy to me
I'm sure Campbell taught Witten a few things on how to be a pro and they are built the same way
So I say all of that when I answer this question ..
I think Witten can be like Campbell for sure
The one thing we've seen in Detroit is that Campbell has built a winning culture
He's got some tough players and they play hard and fast
They also have great assistant coaches who have now both left to take other jobs
We will see real quick if Campbell can sustain that in Detroit and reload his staff
I don't think he's ready to be a head coach just yet
But it didn't take long for him to move up the ranks and I bet Witten does the same
Maybe he'll be a tight ends coach in the NFL sooner than later and will become a head coach in no time
he'll need to surround himself with great assistants
Here's your chance to ask a question for the staff writers
Where do the Cowboys stand now after the draft
Is this a team ready to compete for the division title
What still needs to be addressed this offseason
Why did the Cowboys sign so many guards in free agency
and then use their first-round pick to draft another guard
We heard Jerry Jones talk about drafting Tyler Booker in part because of the defensive tackles the Cowboys will face in the NFC East
But should the Cowboys be building their roster and schemes around defeating their NFC East rivals
Isn't it better to focus on yourself and not worry about any particular team
We heard a lot of talk leading up to the draft that three of the Cowboys' biggest needs were at running back
Were you surprised that these were addressed so late in the draft
What realistic outcome for the Cowboys on draft weekend would you be most excited about if it came to fruition
What would be one outcome that you would be most disappointed about if it happened
Some seem to think the team should use one of their first three picks on an offensive tackle
wouldn't the Cowboys then be hampering the developmental progress of last year's first-round pick
I can see drafting another offensive tackle on Day 3
don't they need to find out what they have in Tyler Guyton before using a top-100 draft pick on another tackle
The Cowboys have certainly been more active in free agency than last year
but they still have glaring needs at receiver
Do you think they can actually draft the best player available in the first three rounds or are they forced into drafting for need
will re-signing him as the top defensive player in the NFL keep the Cowboys from being able to improve the roster
Would trading him for multiple picks along with saving the high cap number actually be a viable option
If pick 12 comes around and Penn State tight end Tyler Warren is there
A lot of people say the Cowboys don't need a tight end
but he's a stud who can immediately improve the run game
Even though Dallas seems set at the position
Why does everyone seem to think Dallas needs to pick a running back in the first round
The Cowboys should pick a defensive tackle or defensive end in the first round
Great NFL teams build their offensive and defensive lines first
The lack of a fourth-round pick needs to be addressed by either trading back eight to 10 spots (assuming they get offers) or using the later-round picks in a package to move up to the fourth
I would prefer to move back and get at least a third-round pick
and save those fifth- and sixth-round picks for taking shots at players with potential to contribute
Many names are being tossed around in the media as potential candidates, including 11-time Pro Bowler and future Cowboys Hall of Famer Jason Witten.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t upstage the Packers-Eagles playoff game by announcing that Mike McCarthy won’t return as head coach
Jones upstaged Monday night’s Vikings-Rams playoff game by arranging for the leak of the news that Jones has spoken to Colorado coach Deion Sanders
The disclosure provides a mutual benefit to Sanders and the Cowboys. It helps him possibly get more money from Colorado, it legitimizes him as a potential NFL coach in the future (even though he insisted during the 2023 season that he would never coach in the NFL), and it gives the Cowboys’ job cache up the ying yang
Jerry surely will look for even more sizzle
a story might emerge during the Rams-Eagles playoff game on NBC and Peacock that Jones has spoken to North Carolina coach Bill Belichick
Some with knowledge of the dynamics of the organization believe he will at some point (not necessarily now) be the Cowboys’ head coach
And if McCarthy had agreed to proceed with a short-term contract
Witten might have joined the staff for some NFL coaching experience before ascending to the top job
maybe Jerry Jones takes a page out of the Jim Irsay playbook
After foolishly firing Frank Reich early in the 2022 season
Irsay even more foolishly hired former Colts center Jeff Saturday
who had limited coaching experience exclusively at the high-school level
Witten has been the head coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle
Another possibility would be for Jones to hire someone like Pete Carroll
who would take the job with the understanding that he will groom Witten to take over
and now might not be the right time for Witten to move to the NFL level
watch for his name to at least be mentioned
if for no other reason to make Witten’s possible future arrival in Dallas less stunning that Saturday’s was in Indianapolis

Jason Witten named in potential list of candidates for Dallas Cowboys head coaching jobby Cole Johnson
Elizabethton's own Jason Witten has been brought up as a potential candidate to land the Dallas Cowboys' open head coaching position
According to sources NBC Sports and CBS Sports
Witten has moved to the list of candidates that owner Jerry Jones would consider moving forward with after the organization and Mike McCarthy failed to come to an agreement on his next contract and parted ways earlier in the week
Witten's name came into play after sources say Jones had pitched the idea of making Witten "the heir apparent of sorts" to McCarthy once McCarthy's second contract negotiations began
with 11 of them being Pro Bowl seasons for the tight end
Witten accumulated 1,215 receptions for 12,977 yards and 72 touchdowns in his time with Dallas
Witten came back to Dallas for one year before finishing out his career in Las Vegas in 2020
Witten has been the head coach at Liberty Christian High School in Argyle
Texas and has led them to back-to-back state title in 2023 and 2024
Since the annual 'Black Monday' in the NFL where the coaching carousel really picks up at the conclusion of the league's regular season
only one head coaching vacancy has been filled
The New England Patriots hired Mike Vrabel on Sunday - leaving six other teams still searching
it has left the national media pointing to Deion Sanders as the top - and most intriguing - choice for Jones and the Cowboys
though Schottenheimer hasn't even held a meeting as the new head coach of the team
both fans and media already suspect who will be his eventual successor:Cowboys legend and future Hall of Famer
It's unbelievably disrespectful to him that we're already even thinking about this
But don't blame fans nor reporters for thinking it
Blame the front office for setting the stage for such speculation
Schottenheimer should be in the "inexpensive" range of NFL coaches, based on the fact that he received no interest from other teams. Ian Rapoport from NFL Network suggested pay factored into Jerry's decision
Pair that with how the McCarthy saga played out and it's only fair to assume the Cowboys want flexibility to move on quickly if needed. As such
it doesn't take a lot of "reaching" to speculate on the Cowboys potentially wishing Jason Witten eventually takes the head coaching job
the biggest flaw to that idea is Witten's complete lack of NFL coaching experience
would be the first step toward remedying that.
it's the Schottenheimer era in Dallas

Former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten could have a job on the team’s coaching staff in 2025
The question is: Will he be the head coach
Witten declined comment Wednesday when asked about his name being in the mix for the team’s vacancy
Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports
Harris said Witten did acknowledge the “intrigue” with the Cowboys’ coaching situation
Witten’s only coaching experience has been as a high school coach at a private school in a suburb of Fort Worth
He has led Liberty Christian School in Argyle to back-to-back state championships
Jason Garrett is the only former Cowboys player to coach the Cowboys
but owner Jerry Jones’ other seven head coaching hires had either former head coaching experience and/or had ties with Jones
Weaver was announced Tuesday as one of the 20 semifinalists for the eighth annual Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year award
Compiled by a subset of the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Selection Committee
the semifinalists have all demonstrated a record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage
The full list of semifinalists includes: Justin Barron (Syracuse)
joining Joshua Paschal and DeAndre Square as the only three-time team captains in school history
He graduated in December of 2023 with a degree in community leadership and development
He is currently working on a second degree in family science with a minor in communication
he has totaled 19 tackles in seven games and leads the team in sacks (4.0) and quarterback hurries (3)
He currently ranks fourth on UK’s career lists for sacks (20.5) and is seventh in tackles for loss (36.5)
who was also a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year award last season
was also named to the prestigious Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and is a semifinalist for the coveted Wuerffel Trophy for his work in the community
The winner will be announced at the award ceremony at AT&T Stadium in Arlington
The winner of the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year will also receive a $10,000 contribution in his name to his school’s athletic scholarship fund

it seems as if franchise legend Jason Witten will not be coming aboard
Witten doesn't have NFL coaching experience, but he has found quick success in the profession at the high school level.
Texas) Warriors to a TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) Division II state championship
His team won the championship game 52-10 and completed a perfect 14-0 season where it outscored opponents 716-96 in total
A jump from high school to the NFL might have been quite the leap
Witten also enjoyed plenty of success as a player for the Cowboys during his 16 seasons from 2003 to 2019
He finished his career with the 2020 Las Vegas Raiders
but he is best remembered for his time with the NFC East team that included 11 Pro Bowl selections and two First-Team All-Pro nods
He posted four seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards and also suited up for six different playoff teams during his tenure
Nobody in Cowboys history has more career catches (1,215) or receiving yards (12,977) than Witten
and he is also second behind only Dez Bryant (73) with 72 total touchdown catches with the franchise
Yet it seems like Dallas is not going to add him to the coaching staff for the upcoming campaign despite his legendary status with the organization

we will probably be praising Dallas Cowboys legendary TE Jason Witten for making it to the Hall of Fame on his first opportunity
Witten definitely has a first ballot Hall of Fame resume’ to his name
and was a consummate leader on the field and in the locker room
The former Tennessee Volunteer was drafted by the Cowboys in the 3rd round of the 2003 NFL Draft
and was an immediate fan favorite as a rookie
Witten came into the league under one of the strictest disciplinarians the NFL has had roam the sidelines
Bill Parcells made rookie Witten’s life miserable in training camp
but molded him into one of the best players in the NFL by his second season
Witten is a revered member of the Dallas Cowboys alumni
and just about everyone with anything to do with the Dallas Cowboys organization
He retired in 2020 (for the second time) as a member of the Las Vegas Raiders
but will only be remembered as a Dallas Cowboy
and has a very lofty career goal: to one day be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys
Witten was asked if Jerry Jones ever reached out to him during the Dallas Cowboys head coaching search
eventually choosing OC Brian Schottenheimer as Mike McCarthy’s successor
There were rumors flying that Witten was a real possibility for the job
but his response should stifle those whispers
I think they went through a thorough process for them and got to a place where they felt like Brian (Schottenheimer) was the guy
that’s a long-term goal of mine to one day get back there
Witten is off to a good start as far as coaching careers go
he agreed to be the head coach at Liberty Christian High School in Argyle
Liberty Christian won the Texas high school football state championship with the only undefeated season in school history
Witten just polished his second consecutive trophy at the end of the 2024 season
Pump the brakes a little on the Witten to Dallas speculation
I don’t care how comfortable the Jones’ are with Witten
There would be a PR nightmare if they plucked him from the high school ranks directly to head coach of the most valuable sports franchise in the world
Witten’s high football IQ as a player is a ticket for him to join the NFL as an assistant without taking his licks as a college coach
I don’t think anyone would be opposed to that
The Dallas Cowboys just hired their 10th head coach in franchise history
Witten will be a hot commodity in the head coach cycle
He has the chance to go from playing for the Dallas Cowboys to standing on the sideline as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys
but he wouldn’t be the first to do it
There has already been a former Cowboys player turned head coach
and you know him by the name Jason Garrett
there are some fans out there who forgot about Garrett because he was a career backup to Troy Aikman while in Dallas
he was the first to be named head coach after having played for the team
he could roam the sidelines as an assistant sooner rather than later

When the news broke of the Cowboys retaining Lunda Wells
it was widely assumed he'd be back to coach the tight ends
And though his job title hasn't been officially announced
keeping Wells should end the speculation that Jason Witten would wind up on the team's staff in the immediate future
Retaining Wells is likely the nail in the coffin for the former TE
who would now struggle to fit the current Cowboys' coaching staff
which seemed to be a big concern for the fanbase
fans didn't seem to love the idea of him being back as a coach with the team
The rumors about Witten being placed on the staff by Jerry Jones and groomed to be the future head coach for organization have been running rampant since the season ended, but have since been squashed
bringing Wells back should kill any last gasp of hope of Witten's inclusion
no one would put making that type of move past Jones
and it was the main issue with the possibility of Witten being brought in for any role with the team
The thought that new head coach Brian Schottenheimer
or anybody who was being considered for the head coaching job
wasn't in control of who he hired rightly sat the wrong way with the masses
Head coaches should be in charge of their staff
Sadly, the Cowboys' owner hasn't always seen it that way. Jones has hired coaches before the head coach before so it was fair to wonder if it would happen again. Jason Garrett was brought on by Jones as the offensive coordinator before Wade Phillips was hired as the head coach
and the team kept Kellen Moore as the OC when McCarthy was hired
Not an ideal way to build a coaching staff
It's hard to knock Witten as a candidate who might someday be a coach in the NFL. Currently, the four-time All-Pro, 11x Pro Bowl player, and Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year is busy winning back-to-back state championships for Liberty Christian School in Argyle
but it's a large leap from high school to professional football
Cowboys fans wait to hear what position Wells will lead
with the offensive line being an option as well as the job he held for the last five years in Dallas
Wells being back is good news for a team that needs good coaching
It's also appearing like it's good news that Witten is going to be a conversation for another time
the coach Witten talk looks like it can be shelved with the Cowboys
Much of the discourse around the Cowboys’ head coaching vacancy has been dominated by Deion Sanders. While it remains to be seen how willing the Colorado coach and owner Jerry Jones will be to move forward with such a hire, other names are worth watching.
Taking things one step further, Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda reports both Moore and Witten are considered to have a strong chance at being hired by Jones
The former quickly transitioned from his quarterback career to the sidelines
serving as the Cowboys’ QBs coach in 2018
He was promoted to offensive coordinator one year later and held that title for four seasons
With then-head coach Mike McCarthy taking on play-calling duties in 2023
Moore moved on to the Chargers for one year before winding up in his current Eagles posting
Such a setup could very well have set Witten up as a potential successor to McCarthy, but now that the team will be going in another direction it remains to be seen what will happen on that front
Slater notes Jones’ affinity for Witten
could still land him a position of some kind on the team’s coaching staff
Jumping from his current situation all the way to an NFL HC position would remain surprising regardless of how Jones views his other options
Pauline’s sources note that Sanders is not viewed as being a true contender to land the position at this point
The Hall of Famer corner is not considered ready to handle a head coaching gig in any market
Moore and Witten’s respective candidacies will increasingly become worth monitoring

but elderly billionaires who *definitely* aren’t slipping sure love hiring people they had already heard of twenty years ago
The Cowboys have become a comedy of errors so a more appropriate choice than Witten might be Leon Lett
A bad OC and a high school coach are in the running
I don’t think JJ wants a head coach around who demands more of the spotlight than him
Dave Wannstedt said on Chicago radio that McCarthy left because JJ would not let him have autonomy over his own coaching staff
JJ has to play with his toy moreso than any other owner
This is why the Cowboys will never win another Super Bowl in JJ’s lifetime
How many white guys can one owner hire as head coach before it’s fair to comment about it
Especially if he hires a white guy with no coaching experience
if you want to hire on “merit” you have to hire a white guy or else it’s a DEI hire
but don’t forget that there are also several other NFL franchises that haven’t ever hired an African American HC either
but I wouldn’t put it past Jerry to pull something like that just because he can
Did the Cowboys learn no from watching Jeff Saturday coach the Colts
Beloved players with no coaching experience do not make strong head coach candidates
“Pauline’s sources note that Sanders is not viewed as being a true contender to land the position at this point
Moore and Witten’s respective candidacies will increasingly become worth monitoring.”
In what world is Witten considered more ready to handle a NFL head coaching job than Sanders
Not that I think Sanders should get the job but at least he has HC experience at a P5 school
Three seasons at the FCS level is also significantly more experience than Witten
I listen to the Cowboys flagship radio station
the guys were talking about how Jones is “enamored ” with the idea of Sanders being head coach
They went on to talk about Deion’s perspective being open to the idea and
everyone close to Deion was pushing him to go for it
Shotty… but I think Jerry will roll out some form of Moore/Witten or Sanders/Witten
Flores are pure window dressing for JJ so he can say he met the “Rooney rule.”
The other two are legitimate options and should be interviewed this cycle
Salah is tipped to return to San Francisco as its DC
I hope when Witten takes the podium at his introductory press conference
he talks about biting elbows and taking chunks out
At least 12 times he has to say “we’re gonna be the toughest team at __ “
I’d be surprised if he could say anything that cogent
You mean the “head puppet” position
Remember a few years ago when Kellen Moore was the Dallas OC and after the first few games his offense was on fire
He was then looked at as the next most sought after HC candidate
Then the new broom sweeps clean theory hit
After some work the broom just is like all the others
His offense went soon and so was his popularity How many jobs has he had since
And for some reason Paul Newman and Steve McQueen in some movies
I actually do the Newman/McQueen thing too
I’m out finally with Jerry and his moronic decisions ..if he goes with witten.
not liking Kellen either but atleast he’s been in the nfl in some capacity as a coach

Jones doesn’t just believe Witten can find the same success Campbell has since they both played tight end
he states that his intelligence and understanding of the physical nature of the game would help as well
"Jason is very sophisticated when it comes to understanding football and all the nuances," Jones said
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten / Matthew Emmons-Imagn ImagesThere’s no denying Witten understands the game
You also can’t say he wasn’t physically and mentally tough during his career
The question would be whether or not Witten understands how to relate to players in the locker room — which is where Campbell thrives
It’s no secret that Witten did himself no favors in 2018 when he spent a year on Monday Night Football
He came off as someone who was out of touch
Throw in the fact that he’s never coached in any capacity at the pro level and it leaves you wondering why Jones believes there’s any comparison to Campbell whatsoever

Jason Witten may not wind up on the Dallas Cowboys staff after all
One name that many have assumed will grace the staff when it is assembled is former tight end Jason Witten
While Schottenheimer ultimately was named head coach
at one point in time Witten was being connected to the job himself
To date Witten has no coaching experience at the collegiate or professional levels
and many have thought that a plan to groom him may be in place which would obviously require him to join an NFL staff
There have been mixed feelings on this potential
many that fans have been vocalizing ever since Witten’s name first popped on the overall coaching radar
it seems like Witten may not be joining the staff after all
A source informed tells me the #Cowboys have not completed the process of hiring their defensive coordinator
Matt Eberflus is certainly someone held in high regard and certainly part of the consideration however
Slater notes that Witten is not “part of their considerations” and adds that he and Jerry Jones have maintained their relationship
Perhaps there was never any legitimacy to the idea of Witten joining the Cowboys staff
whether as head coach or in some other capacity
or perhaps there has been an about face of sorts
Former players decorate team’s sidelines all of the time so the idea of Witten as a tight ends coach or something would certainly not be unheard of
It was the notion of him as head coach that seemed to have people up in arms
Schottenheimer is scheduled to have his introductory press conference on Monday at 12pm ET so it feels fair to assume we will get more information then
Obviously things could leak in the time being as well
During his Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan's K & C Masterpiece show, Jones said former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has what it takes to be a coach in the NFL and reminds him of Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell.
to name two—if they hire a new head coach after this season
that's never really been Jones' style for most of the last 30 years
Dave Campo were not necessarily regarded as strong personalities who would challenge Jones on his decisions
Parcells at least seemed to get along well with Jones during his four seasons as head coach from 2003 to '06
Another problem with Cowboys fans expecting someone like Belichick is Jones has made a point of saying in the past that a retread coach never won a Super Bowl with his second team
It should be pointed out Jones said that before it started happening seemingly every year
Coaches who have won at least one Super Bowl in their second stint as a head coach include Gary Kubiak (2015 Denver Broncos)
Andy Reid (three times with the Kansas City Chiefs) and Bruce Arians (2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
Witten played 16 of his 17 seasons in the NFL with the Cowboys. He is the franchise's all-time leader in receptions (1,215)
receiving yards (12,977) and ranks second in receiving touchdowns (72)
Comparing anyone right now to Campbell is lofty praise because he has helped to completely shift the narrative around a Lions franchise that was a laughingstock for most of the past 70 years
Perhaps Jones knows things about Witten that the general public doesn't
but it's hard to imagine a coach with no experience about the high-school level could have a Campbell-like impact right away if he moves to the NFL
It was generally anticipated that former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten would join the team’s coaching staff for this season
but owner Jerry Jones squashed that Monday
Patrik Walker of the team website reports that Jones said Witten is not expected to join his former team in any capacity for 2025
Jason is an outstanding coach,” Jones added
Witten has served as the head coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle
He recently celebrated a second consecutive Texas state championship for private schools
Jason Witten was understandably rumored to be a potential candidate when the team was looking for its next head coach
The former tight end said he would love to be the Cowboys coach eventually
but it wasn't in his cards this time around
He never got a call from Jerry Jones about the position
is currently a head coach at the high school level and has won back-to-back state titles in Texas
He won't be apart of the Cowboys this season
but it wouldn't be surprising to see him join an NFL team's coaching staff in the coming years
If things don't workout for Brian Schottenheimer in Dallas
perhaps Witten's first NFL head coaching gig will be with the Cowboys

A Kentucky Football player has earned a prestigious honor for his work on and off the field. Last night, JJ Weaver was named the eighth annual Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year at an awards ceremony at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The senior outside linebacker is the second former Wildcat to win the award, joining Josh Paschal in 2021.
The award is named after Jason Witten, one of the best tight ends in history who also served as one of the sports’ most prominent role models during his 16-year professional career. It recognizes the FBS player who best demonstrates an outstanding record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage, integrity, and sportsmanship. Weaver was one of three semifinalists alongside Boise State’s Ahmed Hassanein and North Carolina’s Kaimon Rucker.
Since arriving on Kentucky’s campus in 2019, Weaver has been the embodiment of a servant leader, using trauma from his own life to help others. The Louisville native was born with polydactyly, a condition that led to him having six fingers on his right hand, for which he was bullied and ridiculed growing up. In 2023, he teamed up with Nike to make a glove with six fingers — “The Perfect Fit” — for others who share his condition.
“I am excited and honored to present the eighth annual Collegiate Man of the Year to J.J. Weaver,” said Witten. “He is a great leader and an inspiration to us all. He overcame several challenges in his time at Kentucky, including injuries, the death of his father and high school coach. But he used those challenges to help others and become an inspiration to so many. He is a perfect example of what a college student-athlete can be.”
“Thank you so much to Jason Witten and everyone who voted for me to receive this prestigious award,” Weaver said. “Also, thank you to my family, teammates, and coaches for all they have taught me. I’ll be forever grateful to you all.
