US: TravelNet Solutions, a provider of integrated software and marketing solutions for the hospitality industry
has announced that president Odus “Boogie” Wittenburg will become the company’s new CEO
Bailey will now transition into the role of executive chairman as a result
Wittenburg will bring over 20 years of technology leadership experience including roles at ARCOS
He most recently held the CEO position at ARCOS
a core operating software solution that serves the utility space
The move comes as TravelNet Solutions shifts into the next stage of its journey to help vacation rental operators deliver the outright best guest and owner experience through “the most advanced technology solutions in the industry”
The company said that its “rapid” growth over the last few years had created opportunities to scale operations and further enhance both volume and velocity of innovation
Boogie has proven himself to be a very strong operations expert and I have great conviction that he will be the right leader to further accelerate TNS’ success as we
move into the next chapter of our growth story
He has been an outstanding partner to me over the last several months
“I couldn’t be more excited that he’s agreed to assume the CEO seat as I move into the executive chairman role where I can focus my passions: product vision
and customer relationships,” he added
Wittenburg said: “I’m honoured to be part of this incredible team and humbled by the opportunity to lead this impressive organization
Ryan and I have worked closely together and we’ve connected over our shared excitement about the company’s future in terms of culture
“I truly believe we’re aligned for strong growth at an exciting time for our market,” he added
TravelNet Solutions will share details about its future innovation and customer experience plans at its NEXT25 customer conference in Nashville
Wittenburg and Bailey will both speak on the topics from the keynote stage
Earlier this year, the company announced that it had significantly increased the product and engineering resources committed to its core property management system Track by three times
The move was part of an overall restructuring plan that started in April

COLUMBUS, Ohio – University and college campuses in Springfield canceled activities and moved to remote instruction on Sunday after receiving threats of violence tied to false claims about the city's Haitian immigrants
Wittenberg University canceled all sporting events and other activities on Sunday and said classes will be remote on Monday
Clark State College also canceled activities
and will conduct instruction virtually for the week
The two schools are the latest victims after a series of threats against government offices, schools, hospitals, and other facilities. The city of Springfield was thrust into the national spotlight after former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, began sharing misinformation about immigrants in the city stealing and eating pets
"University administrators recognize that the city of Springfield has experienced an increase of threats to local government
and schools in the past week," Wittenberg officials posted to the school's website Sunday
"We take this threat seriously and will provide updates to the campus as we learn more about the situation."
Three elementary schools were evacuated
and a middle school and the City Hall were closed over the last week after receiving threatening calls and bomb threats
Bomb threats also forced two area hospitals into lockdown on Saturday
‘They’re eating the dogs’: Trump echoes false anti-immigrant rumor during debate
Officials said Wittenberg University received a threat Saturday by email of a shooting planned for campus
another emailed threat warned of a bomb in a red Honda Civic
Police removed a car matching the description from Bill Edwards Drive
Wittenberg police are working with Springfield police and the FBI to investigate the threats and said they were increasing campus patrols Sunday
and staff to "exercise extreme precaution," be alert to their surroundings
and report suspicious activity to Wittenberg police
"As the University continues to assess these threats in partnership with the Springfield Police Department (SPD) and FBI
all Wittenberg classes will be remote tomorrow
16," Wittenberg officials said in an update Sunday evening
"Faculty and staff are also expected to work remotely
and activities will again be canceled tomorrow."
Clark State College announced Sunday it will move from in-person classes to online virtual classes for Monday through Friday at all of its campuses
Citing "recent events in Springfield," Clark State said it was "taking proactive measures to ensure the well-being of all students
the college said it received an email threat late Saturday via the admissions link on its website which raised concerns about a possible shooting
the college received an emailed bomb threat to the Springfield campus
Clark State said it took immediate action in contacting Springfield police to ensure the campus was secure and safe
"out of an abundance of caution," the college said it is closing all campuses through the week and that employees should work from home
"We understand the anxiety that such incidents can cause and we are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and care," the college said on its website
Springfield police will also increase their security presence on campus
and we are working with our wellness team and partners to provide additional counseling services."
At Tuesday's presidential debate against Vice President Kamala Harris
Trump again touted claims that Haitian immigrants in Springfield are eating cats and dogs
Trump also claimed that about 20,000 Haitians in the city are there illegally
even though a majority came to the United States under the federal government's Temporary Protected Status program – fleeing gangs and economic insecurity in their home country
On Sunday, Vance said during an interview on CNN that he spread the claims in an effort to draw attention to the influx of migrants
“If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people then that's what I'm going to do,” he said
clarifying that "it comes from firsthand accounts from my constituents
meaning we're creating the American media focusing on it."
who pledged at least $2.5 million in state funding last week to help Springfield officials with health care access and road safety
called the threats to public safety of about 15,000 Haitians state officials say are in the city "a very sad thing."
who said the city has found no credible reports of pets being harmed
injured or abused by members of the Haitian immigrant community
called the spreading of misinformation "disappointing."
The parents of an 11-year-old boy who was killed in a traffic crash last year caused by a Haitian immigrant said last week that an "incessant group of hate-spewing people" was using their son's death for political gain
many of whom were invited to Springfield by employers unable to fill jobs
have said they are experiencing increased threats and harassment

If you’ve ever been on a shoot with a mountain bike photographer or videographer
you’ll know communication between athlete and lensman is paramount
The most important communication is when the athlete should drop into their line
Some shots can take hours to set up and even months to plan
with drones in the air and the soft light hitting the ridge just so
The last thing anyone wants to hear on these complicated sets is the rider at the top of the mountain yelling: “Wait
The filmmakers at Anthill Films learned that a long time ago
which is why no one in their crew ever says “go” when it’s time
They say “anytime.” It’s also what they called their latest mountain bike feature film
which was a partnership production with Red Bull Media House
ANYTIME premiered during Crankworx this summer in front of a fervent crowd at the Whistler Conference Centre
and the film is set to release for streaming Sept
I caught up with director Darcy Wittenburg to chat about Anthill Films returning to make what they love most
the amazing year that women of freeride are having
and action sports films being about action again
The interview has been edited for length and clarity
Pique: You had just come off making two big documentaries (Long Live Chainsaw: The life and legacy of Stevie Smith and The Engine Inside: Using bicycles to build a better future)
is ANYTIME a return to the roots of Anthill Films
DW: “Both those documentaries had a pretty heavy subject matter
While both films had positive and bright sides to them
it was nice to make a film this time that dialled back the story a bit and focused on the action
We had all sorts of ideas on how to theme the film
all they really cared about was pushing themselves
seeing each other progress and getting inspired by that forward movement of the sport
So the goal for the film became ‘don’t say the word progression,’ but at the end of the day
that’s what the sport of mountain biking will always be about
So that’s what we focused the film on.”
You filmed biking in some pretty dramatic locations
big-mountain riding and urban freeride settings
How did you go about selecting these locations
“It came down to the riders and the type of terrain they wanted to be in
We selected places based on where we could call on our connections in the area (people who can help us get the project going) and how remote the place is
we were looking at mountain ranges all over the world
But we ended up choosing Chile because it had the terrain our riders wanted and it was within a 30-minute heli flight of a major hospital
Riders need to know they have that safety net in order to push themselves to the edge
we selected cities that had already hosted urban downhill races and where we could connect with locals who can organize closing down streets and building jumps off the side of houses
It’s not the first time they’ve done this sort of thing in their cities.”
It’s a big year for women’s freeride with a female category slopestyle event at Crankworx and women dropping into Red Bull Rampage for the first time
How did ANYTIME celebrate this milestone?
“We made the conscious choice early on that it was high time there was a movie with 50/50 men and women
We weren’t trying to draw attention to it and we haven’t used it in the marketing of the film
We didn’t intend to separate the men and women in the film into their own segments
that just sort of happened naturally when we asked the riders who they wanted to film with
The Oregon segment had a balanced mix of genders though
and we’d like to see more of that in future films.”
You’ve always strived to push your own videography with your films—were there any special techniques or equipment you employed for ANYTIME
“We used our backpack rig (which mounts a stabilized
backwards-facing Red camera controlled by another operator) which was great for manoeuvring through the tight streets in Mexico
When we used the same rig in Oregon I had to ride in front of the riders on an e-bike and it was quite scary matching their speeds and still making it around corners
we had to use a Shot Over (a gyro-stabilized camera mounted directly to the nose of the helicopter) because of the scale of the lines they were riding
Because of the elevation we were at and how long the shots were
the drones could barely land before running out of battery
Red Bull have their own F1 Shot Over that we could use for that segment.”
It’s been 20 years since you released your first mountain bike film (under the previous iteration of the company “The Collective”)
where do you see your filmmaking going from here
"We certainly aren’t making enough money to retire any time soon
so we might have to keep going for another 20 years to keep food on the table (laughs)
We’ve already been talking about how this film has the potential to have a follow up or even a trilogy
We have tons of ideas for action films that we want to do
Every time we finish a film we’re always pretty hungry to start again
because you never feel like you totally nailed it
but when we were deep in the edit we caught ourselves getting sidetracked on what we wanted to do for the next film
There’s lots coming down the pipe for sure.”
ANYTIME streams on Red Bull TV starting Sept

Columbus-based Arcos

Volunteering is a chance to give back to the community that supports you
Being active in the community allows one to help with local causes while meeting the people who make up your community
As Jean Von Wittenburg puts it: “Volunteering is fabulous
That’s all I can say.” During her thirty or so years in Montecito
Jean has served on the board at several institutions in the area and has loved every moment of it
Although Jean has become a familiar face in the volunteering community
she did not become very active until later in life.
She attended the Westlake School for Girls before it became a dual-gendered school
She left for Stanford University to study Hispanic American Studies before returning back to L.A
she tutored at the Vine Street School before working at the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce in the World Trade Department as a bilingual secretary
They had visited Montecito over the years on vacation and had always loved the area.
They’ve now been living in Montecito for some 30 years and
while Jean always had her eye on community involvement
it was her love for her community that inspired her to become more involved
“Volunteering is a great way to make good friends who have common interests,” she says
Jean was a docent at the Santa Barbara Zoo as well as a board member
She was also active with The Braille Institute
the 100-plus-year-old establishment that she finds to be a “wonderful organization.” Jean was most involved with the Montecito Association
where she served several terms on the board
she helped run Beautification Day for years
and assisted with memberships or anything else she could
she has not been able to volunteer with organizations
but plans to get back to it as soon as she can
Jean likes to be out and constructive in the community
it gives her the chance to see her friends again.
They played often at the Los Angeles Tennis Club during their career days and continued playing on local courts when they settled in this area
Jean mentioned that she has probably played every tennis court in town and would have lived on the courts
The two have an interest in golf as well; they’ve played at many different courses over the years
But tennis is Jean’s preferred sport.
Thanks to her participation in the zoo for so many years
Jean and Davis have owned four collies who sprawled around their house on Mountain Drive; they wouldn’t move from their house until their last pet passed
Jean has worked with the Humane Society to help organize a kitten visit for the residents of Casa Dorinda
The residents were only able to have two kitten visits before the lockdown began
furry visitors and Jean hopes to continue the program
Jean had volunteered with the Humane Society previously but was about to become more involved when the quarantine hit
She said she hopes to jump back in with them once things open up again.
Whether it’s helping clean up the area for Beautification Day or bringing furry visitors to the seniors of Casa Dorinda
Jean enjoys serving the community that she so dearly loves

Here are the top state and local IT leaders to know to stay up to date on the latest technology trends
Tempe CIO Mark Wittenburg turned to Arizona State University to help his city get smart about cleaning up graffiti
New research from CDW reveals insights from AI experts and IT leaders
Melissa Delaney is a freelance journalist who specializes in business technology
She is a frequent contributor to the CDW family of technology magazines
It’s a reality that prompted city leaders in Tempe
to set a goal of reducing it to one instance per four square miles
it attracts more and detracts from the overall appearance of the city,” says Tempe CIO Mark Wittenburg
“But we had a very difficult time reaching our goal
and part of it was just identifying it quickly enough.”
The city needed a novel solution to an age-old problem, so it turned to Arizona State University’s Smart City Cloud Innovation Center (CIC)
they devised a plan to dispatch garbage trucks equipped with ASUS high-definition cameras to film city streets
use machine learning to analyze the footage and detect graffiti
then send photos and geolocation tags via Esri geospatial information mapping software to the city’s graffiti team to abate it
It’s one of many instances in which the city and university have teamed to solve real-world problems
municipalities around the nation are serving as test beds for smart city initiatives with neighboring colleges
tackling challenges ranging from transportation and public safety to homelessness and natural disasters
“ASU’s been a great collaborator,” Wittenburg says

Staff, faculty and student interns from the ASU CIC — one of 13 worldwide Cloud Innovation Centers sponsored by Amazon Web Services — walked Tempe officials through Amazon’s “working backwards” process
starting with the customer’s perspective and working backwards toward a solution
and accelerating Wittenburg and his team’s development of machine learning algorithms
we can program it to do almost anything,” Wittenburg says
“It’s one of those technologies that’s limited just by the imagination.”
EXPLORE: Why smart cities are installing kiosks for citizens.
Tempe has benefitted not only from its own partnerships with ASU but from the college’s collaborations with other municipalities. For instance, the CIC used LIDAR aerial imagery uploaded into Esri geospatial mapping software to help the city of Scottsdale
track and reduce the water it uses for landscaping
Tempe then leveraged that code to meet its own goal of expanding its tree canopy and shade coverage
news of the Scottsdale project spread as far as Durban
where officials heard about the water conservation challenge and wound up working on a similar project with the CIC
Percentage decrease in the average time cars spend in Pittsburgh’s new smart loading zones
The CIC’s work is sponsored by ASU and AWS
“There’s no charge to communities,” says CIC General Manager Ryan Hendrix
“We encourage cities to pull down the code.”
The CIC publishes everything it creates as open-source on its website. It’s a vendor- and cloud-agnostic organization, says Hendrix, although it does use many Amazon services, such as Amazon S3 cloud storage; the AWS Lambda coding platform; Amazon’s virtual private cloud; and Sidewalk
which provides a long-range network for Amazon Internet of Things devices
DISCOVER: How Austin's intelligent transportation systems are transforming Texas.
The center used Amazon’s chatbot service for two initiatives: to address frequently asked questions for the city of Phoenix’s water services department; and to ease the spike in inquiries to the Crisis Response Network
about eviction notices during the pandemic
A student intern from the CIC worked with the Crisis Response Network to build the chatbot for its website
ASU students do much of the work at the CIC
providing technical assistance and strategic guidance in partnership with municipal experts
With the experience added to their resumes
many CIC interns go on to work for technology leaders
“The work we do is not exactly rocket science,” Hendrix says
“It’s just technologies that are available today that often these agencies don’t have the time or the knowledge or the manpower to address.”
Commercial vehicles have a long history of idling at curbs
but the unprecedented growth of pickup/drop-off services — e-commerce sales soared 43 percent in 2020 alone — has created new challenges for cities
including increasing demand for loading zones from the UPS
Grubhub and Uber vehicles that clog streets
“All of these quick-turnaround deliveries were putting a real strain on our curb spaces,” explains Rylan Seifert, curb management and new mobility policy analyst for Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure
the city launched a pilot of 20 smart loading zones using cameras
automated metering and artificial intelligence
boosting their efficiency and easing traffic congestion from vehicles that idle at the curb or drive around in search of parking
REVIEW: Why citizens are demanding immediate data from municipalities.
The yearlong curb optimization pilot, which started with a $100,000 grant from Automotus, a Los Angeles-based curb management software startup, grew into a three-year project thanks to a $3.8 million U.S. Department of Energy grant to develop zero-emissions deliveries in Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is working with a team of partners
including Carnegie Mellon University’s Metro21: Smart Cities Institute
to produce modeling using the data they’re collecting from the smart loading zones and issue recommendations for lowering emissions
The project also has an economic development component, because it increases parking turnover for restaurants and small businesses, and it helps drivers by sharing real-time data about parking availability. Reducing double-parking provides a public safety benefit
which use license plate readers to automatically charge vehicles for the time they park
we only had anecdotal information on our pressure points,” Seifert explains
“Now we know how many cars park there per day
This is all really important information for analyzing our curb policies to see where there are areas that need to be addressed.”
the project tackled a variety of transportation and environmental challenges
identifying open parking spaces and road condition monitoring
“We’re focused on solving real-world problems and doing that through 21st century technology — hence the 21 in our name — that’s developed at Carnegie Mellon,” explains Karen Lightman
“It’s not just a fancy technology that somebody created on a spreadsheet in the lab in a simulated environment.”
Metro21, part of the international MetroLab Network launched through the White House Smart Cities Initiative of 2015
helped to create a model that’s been used around the world
It defines smart cities broadly and has moved beyond the “city as a lab” model to one that is more diverse
“It is about how to protect workers in a gig economy
It’s about addressing food insecurity,” Lightman says
“We dabble in everything and the kitchen sink when it comes to smart cities

It has been the favourite in our frozen range since 1970
Oetker factory in Rhineland-Palatinate goes into operation
The reunification of Germany opens new opportunities and sales markets
another frozen food plant goes into operation – in Wittenburg in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
the staff at our production plant in Wittenburg can celebrate a proud anniversary
Frozen pizzas have been produced here for 30 years now
Oetker produces over 2.3 million pizzas a day in Germany alone
Let's take a look at how it all began here in Wittenburg
The Wittenburg plant shortly before commissioning in 1992…
Obviously a lot has happened here in the last 30 years
The fall of the Berlin Wall makes the long unthinkable a reality: Germany is reunited
Not only for the people in East and West does this mean growing together
but also for companies new opportunities arise
Together with another manufacturer in the food industry
Oetker therefore founds a joint venture in 1991 to produce in the then so-called "new federal states"
with an initial investment volume of 60 million Deutsche Mark
The town is excellently connected by the Autobahn 24
and the seaport of Hamburg and the reunited Berlin can be reached quickly
The broad support of the population and local politics does the rest
Oetker acquires all the shares in PIZZA-Frost GmbH
so that the Wittenburg plant is now run by Dr
The last construction work is finally completed in 1994
The construction site in 1992: the immediate vicinity to motorway 24
the completed high-bay warehouse and the social building are clearly visible
the first line goes into operation with the production of Ristorante Salame
The official opening follows in 1993 with an open day for the public
The dough is mixed in large vats by machine
the first pizza line goes into operation with Ristorante Salame (photos taken in 1996)
Oetker has been active in frozen food since 1960
so an enormously extensive range has developed over the decades
come off the production line in Wittenburg
ready-made meals complement the production range
These are dishes modelled on Asian national cuisines
Customers can choose between rice and noodle dishes
spring rolls or sea specialities based on authentic models
12 products from the China-Town line come off the production line in Wittenburg
four pasta dishes from the Ristorante range are also produced
Cakes and baked goods are also part of the portfolio in the early days of the plant in Wittenburg
Ready meals are also produced in Wittenburg in the 1990s
These includes the China-Town range with products such as..
the popular Ristorante product family also included pasta dishes
These are also "Made in Wittenburg"
Up to 1200 kg of pasta can be cooked and 2300 kg of vegetables mixed every hour
The manufacturers of the machines used are as international as the dishes
104,000 ready meals are produced per day in two shifts
Oetker introduces the first industrially produced pizza calzone in 1994
this Italian speciality is also produced in Wittenburg from the mid-1990s
The ultra-modern facilities can be adapted accordingly
Oetker is the first company to produce Pizza Calzone on an industrial scale
The Ristorante Calzone is also produced in Wittenburg as of 1996
The machinery used is as international as the products an recipes themselves
The plants come from manufacturers in Belgium
the decision is made to concentrate completely on pizza production
New pizza lines are built and Wittenburg becomes the development centre for production and processes around dough-based Dr
Today the plant is the largest employer in the region
The workforce has now grown to over 1,000 employees
180 pizza and snack variations are produced today using the most modern methods
The Wittenburg plant is thus well prepared for the challenges of the future
so that many more anniversaries can certainly be celebrated
