AMG Lithium just opened Europe's first lithium refinery in Bitterfeld-Wolfen
AMG Lithium will produce up to 20,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide there starting from next year
which is enough for the batteries of around 500,000 electric cars
AMG estimates its own investment costs at about 140 million euros
with 5.5 million euros contributed from regional economic development programmes
the small city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt where the factory was built
80 jobs were created in the opening of the plant
AMG Lithium plans to have the factory up and running at full capacity
producing up to 20,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year
“We are starting the ramp-up phase and ramping up the plant step by step,” Stefan Scherer
told the Frankfurt-based publication Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung
the lithium will be mined by AMG in Brazil
transported to Europe by ship and extensively purified and refined in Bitterfeld-Wolfen
The aim is to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide with a high energy density
The first customers have also already been confirmed
with cathode and battery cell manufacturers in Hungary and Poland placing orders for the lithium hydroxide
we are a first mover and are making a decisive contribution to the security of supply of the critical raw material lithium for German and European industry,” explained Heinz Schimmelbusch
Chairman of the Board of Management and CEO of AMG N.V
AMG is also hoping for lithium production in Europe: the company is currently investigating whether lithium mining areas in Zinnwald in Germany or in Portugal are a possibility

1981 stands out as a great year for werewolf fans as three movies were released that all look at the lycanthropy mythos from different perspectives and with different objectives in their storytelling
One in particular has reached the status of cult classic
but the other two also have their place amongst the ranks of great werewolf movies
An American Werewolf in London stands out among its contemporaries due to its unique blend of horror
and stunning practical effects it shares the year with two other iconic werewolf films
They encounter a mysterious creature on the moors and are attacked
he is visited by the ghostly figure of his deceased friend
who warns him of his impending transformation into a werewolf
David begins a relationship with one of the nurses and is staying in her flat
The film blends horror and dark comedy as David grapples with his newfound curse and the horrifying reality of his future
is traumatized by a brutal attack and seeks help at a secluded rehabilitation center
She soon discovers that the center is inhabited by a cult of werewolves who are planning to turn her into one of their own
and the loss of identity as Karen fights to survive and escape the clutches of the werewolf cult
Wolfen is a 1981 horror thriller set in New York City
Detective Dewey Wilson is tasked with investigating a series of gruesome murders that bear the marks of animal attacks
he encounters a mysterious Native American community living in the city’s urban jungle
Wilson learns of an ancient legend about wolf-like creatures
who are capable of shifting between human and wolf forms
These creatures are intelligent and cunning
and they seem to be responsible for the recent killings
Wilson must confront the terrifying truth about Wolfen and their deadly intentions
While An American Werewolf in London and The Howling are more traditional werewolf films
Wolfen takes a unique approach by portraying werewolves as intelligent
An American Werewolf in London is often considered a landmark film in the horror genre
with its distinct balance of comedy and horror creating an entertaining film with sympathetic characters and amazing practical special effects but The Howling and Wolfen have also made significant contributions to the werewolf mythos
Each film offers a distinct vision of the werewolf

has commissioned a new lithium hydroxide refinery in Bitterfeld-Wolfen in Saxony-Anhalt
subsidiary AMG Lithium has started production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide to supply the European battery industry
Each module is designed to have an annual production capacity of 20,000 tons
enough for the batteries of approximately 500,000 electric vehicles
AMG plans to gradually increase production in line with demand
When all five modules are in operation by 2030
this could cover around 14 percent of the forecast demand for lithium hydroxide in Europe
The Bitterfeld-Wolfen refinery will use spodumene concentrate from AMGʼs mine in Brazil

Michael Wadleigh’s “Wolfen” was one of three major werewolf films of 1981 (the others are the far more celebrated “The Howling” and “An American Werewolf in London”) and certainly the most unusual
The first shot is of the New York City skyline
with the World Trade Center front and center
We also see urban decay and trash on the street
as well as characters indulging in cocaine
A murder in Battery Park is startling to authority figures for its vicious nature (body parts strewn everywhere) and because the victim is a member of high society
New York Police Department Captain Dewy Wilson (Albert Finney) investigates the bizarre case
which takes him on a tour of the city’s most diminished structures and includes sightings of hungry wolves roaming the city
The thriller is based on the 1978 novel “The Wolfen” by Whitley Strieber (a few years before his #1 bestselling “non-fiction” “Communion” made him a controversial and infamous figure in UFO enthusiast circles). “Wolfen” is an underappreciated
socially observant and visually arresting spin on the werewolf lore that
might not even officially be a werewolf movie
RELATED: How ‘Terror in the Aisle’ Perfectly Captured ’80s Horror
the reveal of what exactly is going on has more to do with Native American mysticism than of run of the mill
This is just one distinction that makes this refreshingly different than most lycanthrope tales of its type
this is similar to “Poltergeist” (1982) in that it focuses on the U.S
losing sight of its past history by building over it
playing American “Dewey Wilson,” Finney did this during a weird period of taking mainstream roles in American films; this came alongside Michael Crichton’s fun but bonkers “Looker” and Daddy Warbucks duty in “Annie.”
“Shoot the Moon” (1982) and “Under the Volcano” (1984) were around the corner
This was the first major film role for Diane Venora
who is forceful here as the detective taking on the case alongside Finney (Venora is a powerful actress
superb in works ranging from “Heat” to “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet”)
The always unforgettable Tom Noonan also stands out in one of his first major film roles
The incomparable Gregory Hines steals all of his scenes as a coroner on the case (the brilliant dancer is better served in a character turn here than in “Mel Brooks’ History of the World Part I,” which he did the same year
unavailable due to his infamous burning accident)
Edward James Olmos is vivid playing the leader of the Native American activists
He has some scenes here that take real nerve
like an encounter with Finney in which they are both atop the Manhattan Bridge
James Horner’s terrific score offers traces of his later compositions
particularly “Aliens.” The cinematographer is Gerry Fisher
the same director of photography on William Peter Blatty’s “The Exorcist III” and “The Ninth Configuration.”
The feel of unease is there right from the start and not necessarily due to the supernatural content: the thermographic tech used during the early police interrogation scene gives the impression of a city under constant surveillance
“Wolfen” is best remembered for its scenes of “wolf-vision,” the in-camera thermographic effects shots that create the unseen wolves’ POV
John McTiernan’s “Predator” (1987) provides the most well-known example of this technique (as it gives us
it’s not just the otherworldly glow it creates
but how it makes night scenes appear like twilight dreamscapes
Wadleigh is most famous for making the documentary “Woodstock” (1970)
and his approach as a documentarian is visible here as well – the feeling for atmosphere and its sensitivity to society’s oppressed and overlooked make this oddly comparable to “Woodstock” and a standout in the genre
a probable result of reported studio recutting
which is why it fits in the do-you-remember-this-one category and isn’t a genuine cult favorite like Joe Dante’s “The Howling” or John Landis’ genre-defining “An American Werewolf in London.”
Using the horror genre and werewolf lore to present a lesson on the neglect and abuse of Native Americans and the homeless
as well as a glimpse of New York from long ago

The film is being manufactured at the original factory built by AGFA in Bitterfeld-Wolfen Germany
which has been producing photography film since 1910
The Wolfen NP100 film differs from the current WOLFEN UN54 film in that it has an additional dyed antihalation layer
positioned between the base material and the emulsion layer
which is designed to prevent the formation of a reflection halo
The company also has plans to release a faster Wolfen NP400 version of the film
ORWO has shared a series of sample photos captured on the new film stock by photographer Doreen Böhnke
ORWO itself is a company started in 1964 in East Germany at the height of the cold war
With the nation of Germany divided due to the politics of the time
and VEB Film und Chemiefaserwerk Agfa Wolfen in East Germany
After the fall of the Berlin wall signaling the end of the Cold War
unification was in the air and ORWO was privatized in 1990
the company went under in 1994 and ceased production of the film at the Wolfen factory
The facility then was occupied by the Industry and Film Museum
which began the production of high-quality black and white cinema and technical films
ORWO had planned to release Wolfen NP100 in April 2022, but due to transportation and logistics issues, that date has been pushed to June. ORWO is currently packaging the film into industry-standard DX coded steel canisters and has opened up its website for preorders
The cost is $11 for each roll of 36 exposures

While ORWO might not have the same name recognition as
it’s been making film for more than a century
it was one of the biggest film manufacturers in the Soviet Union during the Cold War
producing film in East Germany that was shot by photographers on both sides of the Berlin Wall
Wolfen NP100 is an “exceptionally” fine-grained ISO 100 35mm B&W photographic film. According to the announcement on Instagram
are still being shot today with “wonderful results.”
we’ll hold off making any absolute assessments until we run a roll or two through a camera and view the results
it’s no surprise that NP100 is being produced in the company’s factory in Bitterfeld-Wolfen
where it’s been making film since 1910.
NP100 is being released in a “strictly limited run” of 36,000 36-exposure roles
Previous announcements had suggested that the film would be available in April but transport delays (which are no surprise given the ongoing supply chain crisis) have delayed the timeline a bit
It is now expected to start shipping in June

Film company ORWO has announced a brand new film called WOLFEN NC500 which it says is the first new color film it has created in decades
ORWO is a German company and it only recently announced the Wolfen NP100
a brand new ISO 100 black-and-white 35mm film
which was its first new such film launched in 50 years
The WOLFEN NC500 is a limited edition 500 ASA
color photographic film and is produced on the company’s Bitterfeld-Wolfen site where photographic film has been manufactured since 1910
“At the core of our new color film lies a unique chemical formula based on the wonderful and legendary Agfa stock last used in the Oscar-winning film ‘Out of Africa.’ Famous for their greens, desaturated shadows, and enhanced grains, these are all aspects that we are embracing for our new addition,” says ORWO
we are not trying to imitate current stocks available on the market
something with different characteristics and a different palette.”
Pre-orders will launch June 1 on the German outfit’s new store with shipping expected to begin in July
The company released a series of test photographs it says were taken with the new film that shows off the beautiful colors that it gives
ORWO stresses that it is a brand new film it has created, however, it is based on Agfa’s XT320 color cinema film which was used to shoot classic movies such as Out of Africa, Last of the Mohicans, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, according to Amateur Photographer
ORWO was originally founded by AGFA in 1910 where it developed the first modern color film — Agfacolour in 1932
But when Germany was partitioned after the Second World War the Agfa Wolfen factory was in the East and separated from Agfa so it adopted the brand ORWO
The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990 meant the company was privatized but film manufacturing ceased shortly after in 1994
the company made a comeback when ORWO FilmoTec GmbH was founded
which began the production of high-quality black-and-white cinema and technical films
The planned battery cell factory of Daimler partner Farasis Energy in Bitterfeld-Wolfen (Saxony-Anhalt) is probably not going to happen
Bitterfeld-Wolfen has terminated the urban development contract with Farasis Energy Europe
The company has confirmed the move but the connection has not been completely cut
Farasis Energy had chosen Bitterfeld-Wolfen as the location for its European battery factory in 2019
the first battery cells were to be built on-site from the end of 2022
the capacity was to be expanded to up to ten GWh per year
Farasis never started building the plant in the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt
there was talk of a possible start of production in 2024
an update of the localisation strategy in Europe was given as the reason – to our German colleagues at electrive.net this reasoning was repeated as recently as this February
According to a newspaper report in Mitteldeutsche Zeitung (MZ)
the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen has now lost patience
The town council’s resolution documents are said to state that the urban development contract with Farasis Energy Europe had been terminated
thus “ensuring a clear file situation”
Farasis told MZ that “the contract was terminated by mutual agreement”
While Farasis still said in February that in the course of the update it would also be examined how things would continue in Bitterfeld
this process has now apparently been concluded: Farasis now told MZ that “the dynamic market development has led to a shift in priorities
which is why we have postponed the concretisation of our plans for the Bitterfeld-Wolfen site for the time being.”
it remains to be seen whether the city will go along with Farasis’ officially postponed plans
The MZ report mentions a certain annoyance on the part of the city
Farasis apparently did not provide “the necessary precise information for further processing of the development plan pushed through by the city itself […] even after repeated requests and warnings from the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen”
there was apparently interest from other companies in the still undeveloped areas near the motorway
after the termination of the contract with Farasis
the city is now “once again the master of the process”
So the city is once again solely responsible for the development plan
But the big problem is that Farasis still owns the land
Lord Mayor Armin Schenk (CDU) also indicated to the MZ that the connection to Farasis has not been completely cut
“We are continuing to talk,” Schenk said
“It’s a big property owner.”
it is not clear what conclusion Farasis has come to in revising its Europa plans
Whether the European plant will be built at another location or Farasis will supply its customers from its plants in China

Providing highly efficient chemical processes that are also sustainable has become a key requirement for customers of the chemicals sector
While this is easier to achieve in large-scale
continuous processes for portfolio products
reaching similar levels of sustainability in multi-stage syntheses of complex
custom-manufactured molecules remains a challenge
One solution to this problem is hydrogenation
When operated properly and with the appropriate knowledge and expertise
this technology is able to deliver excellent yields at high selectivity
and the catalysts applied in the process can often be re-used or recycled
WeylChem’s hydrogenation plant at Bitterfeld-Wolfen
specialises in custom projects for complex molecules
while its other sites offer solutions for large-scale chemicals production
WeylChem operates hydrogenation processes with a high level of flexibility at two sites in Frankfurt and Bitterfeld-Wolfen
ranging from lab scale and pilot volumes to large industrial campaigns of over 100tons per year
WeylChem InnoTec in Frankfurt uses high-pressure reactions in general and hydrogenation in particular as key technologies within multi-stage syntheses for realising complex customer projects
Several stainless steel and Hastelloy reactors ranging from 200ml to 1.8cbm operate at pressures of up to 200bar and temperatures of up to 220°C
The equipment’s versatility enables the use of a broad range of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts based on nickel
This high level of flexibility puts WeylChem InnoTec in a position to develop processes specifically tailored to individual customer needs while also being able to save costs through the choice of catalyst
technologies and assets makes WeylChem one of the leading providers of high-level hydrogenation
possibilities for re-using and recycling catalysts are actively explored and implemented
hydrogenation technology may help simplify the syntheses or even get rid of individual steps altogether
While WeylChem InnoTec focuses on developing and upscaling processes for new
the other German site near Leipzig is more geared towards applying hydrogenation as part of its custom manufacturing of high-value fine chemicals on an industrial scale
A 2cbm stainless steel Buss loop reactor operates at 19bar with the possibility of increasing to 39bar
typically delivering campaigns in the range from 10 to over 100 tons per year
New customer projects involving catalytic hydrogenation are usually introduced via the site’s 2l pressurised lab reactor and a 20l loop piloting facility before being scaled up to industrial volumes
the teams apply various technologies to ensure the safe handling of solid and liquid raw materials alike
critical raw materials that are regularly used include
hydrogen peroxide (up to 50%) and a number of alkylating agents such as dimethyl sulfate or methyl chloride
runs chemical processes involving large-scale hydrogenation in a dedicated manufacturing stream
The site’s process solutions group provides excellent capabilities in developing chemical reactions involving gases such as hydrogen
Assets available for process development and optimisation include
mini plants for optimising continuous processes
a thin film evaporator and supercritical CO2 extraction
The teams at all sites are in close exchange with each other to ensure mutual learning and continuous process improvements
technologies and assets makes WeylChem one of the leading providers of high-level hydrogenation in Europe

Werewolves are very much always the bridesmaids of the monster world
hog limelight as readily as they shun sunlight
they tend to shove the humble lycanthrope into the background
From Underworld to What We Do In The Shadows
a werewolf's lot in life seems always to be playing second fiddle to a vampire
And if it's not vampires then it's something else
"The one with the werewolf" is unquestionably the best Harry Potter movie
But there's also no doubt that that is a "wizard movie" not a "werewolf movie"
by now you may well be asking yourself whether there even are 25 genuinely werewolf-focused movies of even remotely decent quality
it is true that this list is not so easy to compile as 25 Best Zombie Movies or Vampire Movies
but that doesn't mean that there have not been the occasional moonlit nights when the perpetual monster bridesmaid has been transformed
Whether serving as the age-old metaphor for the savagery that exists within man or perhaps for that time in a girl's life where she starts sprouting extra body hair and experiencing bloody monthly mood swings
the werewolf has proved an impressively versatile movie monster when given the chance to stand on its own
On the battlefield or the basketball court
That's basically the whole pitch of this 2014 Canadian cult comedy
If you're sold on the knowingly kitschy B-movie throwback promised by the name WolfCop then this is probably the movie for you
disengaged small town cop who is knocked out when interrupting a human sacrifice ceremony and wakes up with a pentagram carved on his chest and a whole host of lupine superpowers: sharpened senses
and the ability to transform into a super-strong wolf man
he'll need to be at the peak of his powers to uncover the conspiracy that has led to the town being in the control of reptilian shapeshifters
like rural Irish alien invasion flick Grabbers
it turns out that the secret to defeating the villains lies in the power of consuming copious amounts of alcohol
There's never been a better time to be a drunken screw-up

Refining the metal – which is essential for electric car batteries – in Europe would ease the EU’s precarious reliance on China
It has been called the new gold rush – a rush to catch up with China in producing and refining the materials needed in everything from computers to cars: but has it come too late to save Europe’s car industry
Deep inside a former East German town lie the first fruits of the EU’s grand plan to “de-risk” and wean itself off dependency on imports for the green revolution
an Amsterdam-listed company is scrambling to complete construction of a vast factory that will be the first in Europe to deliver battery-grade lithium
There is now a race across Europe to both mine the silver-white soft metal and manufacture its refined form
lithium hydroxide – the key ingredient in the batteries that power electric cars
This is maybe why they call it the white gold
because it is like a gold rush,” says Stefan Scherer
There is almost no company dealing with raw materials that is not looking into lithium
View image in fullscreenStefan Scherer

which is set to produce the first battery-grade lithium in the EU later this year Photograph: Kristin Bethge/The ObserverThe dependency is also unnerving German and other European car manufacturers
whose home markets are now threatened by good-quality Chinese cars and China’s control of the processing of lithium
Concern is so great that the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen
has launched an anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese imports
amid fears that big manufacturers including Volkswagen and BMW will have trouble matching the supply of electric cars from China
so how has Beijing achieved such a commanding position
Lithium supplies are dominated by five countries
with the bulk of the mineral mined in Australia and Chile
but it is China that has taken the raw material and become the dominant supplier of refined lithium
the means of economic coercion,” says one EU source
The seeds of the EU’s dependency on China were sown in the 1980s after the oil crisis
when then Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping observed: “The Middle East has oil
View image in fullscreenLithium is a silvery-white substance that looks like sugar crystals in its dried form.Rare-earth materials were once found in abundance in the US
but investors in these regions retreated from mining
which was seen as a dirty and expensive industry
which set about buying the world’s stock to become the global hub it is today
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has brought that lopsided trade relationship into sharper focus
“Lithium and rare earths are already replacing gas and oil at the heart of our economy
our demand for those rare earth metals will increase fivefold,” Von der Leyen warned last year in her 2022 state of the union address
“We have to avoid falling into the same dependence as with oil and gas.”
So the EU has set about pushing through efforts to scale up green technologies with the Critical Raw Materials Act
which it passed earlier this year “in record time”
head of the raw materials unit in the commission
It relaxes state aid rules to compete with the US’s Inflation Reduction Act
and raises targets for extraction within Europe
it should become a regulation in the EU this month
“It sets the level of ambition,” says Handley
Before a trip to Latin America to tie down deals on raw material production
Von der Leyen told reporters that the EU had “a 97% dependency where lithium is concerned on China”
Scherer surveys the vast plant that is going to help change that
He points to 20-metre- high metal vats for lithium solutions
drying machines that produce a substance similar to sugar crystals – just one of the processes that create the final refined product before it can be shipped to clients eager for the first batches of EU-made lithium
AMG Lithium expects to be operational by the end of year and has orders stretching into 2026
with demand for fresh lithium salt in Europe forecast to rise to 500,000 tonnes a year by 2030
“We plan to produce 100,000 [tonnes] of that,” says Scherer –enough to provide the active charging ingredient in 2.5m cars
Scherer says it is “absolutely” important that the EU reduce its dependency on China for refined raw materials but is decidedly of the view that it should not cut links fully
you do the little-value small stuff and we will do the rest’,” he says
The Chinese manufacturers already have a 10-year headstart on the EU’s motor industry and “now they are building cars – not bad cars – and they want to sell them as well as the battery cells,” he says
Catching up will be a long and expensive process
To get from opening a mine to producing battery-grade lithium can take seven years
“To open up a mine and build a fully fledged production chain – that’s maybe $750m,” says Scherer
“The thing with chemistry is that it is a capital-intensive industry.”
So is the EU simply too late to stop China overwhelming the domestic car industry
Chinese conglomerates such as BYD (Build Your Dreams) started making electric batteries as far back as 1995 and are now building their own electric cars
“I see the German car industry in decline,” says an EU industry source
“It is fading away because of the inability of managers to do the right things
Notably, China overtook Turkey to become the EU’s top country of origin for car imports across all fuel types last year
European brands still account for 70% of the bloc’s battery-electric car market
but China’s share has risen from 0.5% in 2019 to 4% in 2022 at a time when all-electric models have exceeded 20% of total car sales in the EU for the first time
Having launched three electric cars in Europe last autumn
with prices for the smaller model starting at €29,990 (£25,632) and going up to €36,740 – significantly below the cost of similar-size European electric vehicles (EVs)
director general of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association
says the industry needs more than just a home supply of lithium to fight back
she thinks the quickest way to transition from petrol and diesel is to offer financial incentives to users
“There is no question that affordability is a stumbling block for European electric vehicle uptake,” says De Vries
“Both the US and China are also more ambitious than most EU member states in their purchase incentive and tax benefit schemes
She also argues that because of the rules-of-origin regime in the Brexit deal
tariffs will hit the industry hard unless they are suspended
“The UK market – the EU’s top destination for car exports – provides a glaring example of where cost-competitive Chinese EVs could significantly dent European automakers’ market share,” she says
She adds: “If the current rules of origin on EU-UK vehicle trade are not extended by three years
the loss of market share to Chinese-made EV imports could cost European manufacturers €4.3bn and cut EU-made EV production by up to 480,000 units.”
To add to the Brexit deal problems, carmakers also have a fight on their hands to get political support against Chinese rivals, with EU internal market commissioner Thierry Breton warning on Friday that the EU’s job is not to favour one part of an industry over another

The company’s giant recycling facility in Germany receives hundreds of tons of old clothes a day
Can it find a way to turn those old clothes into new garments and make its business model sustainable
BY Sussanah Edelbaum
H&M works with a massive textile sorting and recycling facility
one that might prove to be the unlikely looking future and redeemer of fast fashion
Around 25 to 30 trucks a day drop off an average of 14 metric tons of unwanted remainders from Europe’s closets
gathered from recycling bins at H&M’s thousands of locations on the continent
this detritus of seasons past is industriously sorted for reuse
a relatively new trinity for the mass-produced clothing industry
And while it clearly has no plans of stopping (the company’s growth target is to increase stores by 10 to 15% annually) it’s also investing heavily in fabric recycling innovations
in the hopes that it can continue to grow while creating a closed-loop system
where most (if not all) of the raw materials for its clothes come from fibers that were already used
A main feature of this plan is a partnership with a solutions provider called I:CO
which oversees this 13-football-field sized plant
(SOEX is a German textile collection and recycling group; I:CO is one of their subsidiaries.) Since 2009
everything left in their European stores has been trucked here
I:CO manages H&M’s in-store cast-off collecting all over the world
and runs two similar facilities–in the U.S
and India–for making zero-waste use of clothes
and textiles that would otherwise likely end up in landfills
the way forward is to create a closed loop for textiles where clothes that are no longer wanted can be turned into new ones
but rather a resource,” says Cecilia Brännsten
The company first began to explore aspects of sustainability with the introduction of some organic cotton back in 2005
but the notion of circular production within their supply chain has really taken off just over the past few years
beginning with the 2013 launch of their in-store garment collecting initiative (you can now leave old textiles at any H&M store in the world)
But keeping clothes out of landfills, while laudable, is more of a first step on the way to the main goal, which is changing the company’s supply chain to a so-called closed loop, thus making far more use of non-virgin fibers (as in, fibers that come from already-worn garments). The H&M Foundation is in the midst of a four-year partnership with The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA)
and has committed $5.8 million to develop the technology to recycle blended textiles into fabrics fit for new clothing
Fibers like cotton-poly are currently un-recyclable into wearable new material
a major obstacle to scaling up the company’s fiber-to-fiber recycling operation and closing that part of the production loop
I:CO doesn’t know the exact amount of cotton-poly it collects, but the amount of blended textiles it has been receiving has been on the rise, so finding a way to recycle these into fiber that can be used for new clothing is a problem that needs to be addressed. In 2015, the company joined forces with luxury group Kering to partner with Worn Again
Worn Again is trying to address problems like the shortening of natural fibers
when clothes you buy are marked “recycled,” that’s only 20% true
which has to be combined with the recycled stuff to make a wearable textile
This is the problem that the scientists at HKRITA are trying to solve
Both in speaking to its executives and in its exhaustive
H&M remains committed to finding a way to make all kinds of fiber-to-fiber recycling a major part of their closed loop materials
even if there is no target date yet in sight
the company has produced 1.3 million garments with closed loop material in 2015 (it’s one of the biggest users of recycled polyester and organic cotton in the world) and H&M seems well aware that a future blended textile recycling capability is a key way to decouple their growth from new materials
and we have huge waste on the other,” says Brännsten
The multiple tons sorted in Wolfen on any given day are still minor compared to the 85% of discarded clothes that sent to landfills (the rest are donated)
yet the operation requires seven hundred employees
most of whom work in the 24-hours-a-day business of sorting
I:CO says that salaries start above the German minimum wage
They’re also offered health benefits on top of normal health insurance
like free physiotherapist visits in Wolfen
likely useful given that each person sifts through more than 6,000 pounds of clothing per eight-hour shift
The sorting process is based on 350 different criteria which determine whether your old jeans will be re-sold
partly re-used (zippers are handy that way)
thereby lengthening the time it takes to go around H&M’s circular production loop
The most worn-out cotton items head to a shredder
where they are gradually broken down and repackaged into inviting bales of fluff
The absurd amount of dust produced by the sorting
and baling is sucked up into brickettes and sold to the paper industry
The reusable clothes–and about 60% of what ends up in Wolfen is still wearable–are sorted by type
and shipped to any of 90 countries (predominantly in Eastern Europe and Africa) for re-sale in used clothing stores
Customers who drop off clothes receive incentives
in the form of discounts or vouchers per bag of clothing
The idea is to make it as compelling as possible to get rid of clothing that would otherwise be trashed
and the incentives vary by H&M brand and home country regulations
a bag with at least three items (from any brand
and this can include stuff like old sheets) nets you a 15% discount coupon at H&M
while the same bag at the more upscale & Other Stories is rewarded with 10% off
the proceeds from used clothing re-sale do not feed the company’s bottom line
but are donated to local charities and the H&M Foundation
which splits the funds between social and recycling projects
At the stores themselves, the Conscious Exclusive collection gives organic and partially-recycled clothing a fancier vibe, while the affordable Conscious line might be in your closet already
an understated recycled denim and knit line for men and women debuted earlier this fall
and is made with 20% post-consumer cotton and wool from I:CO’s India plant
The company uses about 20% sustainable materials overall–using organic cottons
the company has collected about 34,000 tons of waste
the equivalent of 178 million t-shirts over three years sounds less impressive next to the 550 to 600 million garments the company produces annually (this is based on outside estimates; H&M does not release production numbers)
Its sheer size means “we will get criticized,” Brännsten says
throughout their ongoing move toward fuller sustainability
Any advances the company makes in terms of recycling science certainly must be balanced with a continued push toward worker rights and worker safety
or the quest for sustainability in its supply chain will be meaningless
instead of the cotton field,” for new material
noting that one effect of the company’s size is the potential of its influence over supply chains
the goal is to move away from down-cycling (the paper brickettes
Developing cotton-poly recycling will likely speed up if and when H&M’s competitors get on board
“It will not be called ‘recycled’ in the future,” she says
“because that’s the polyester that you get.” Walking through Wolfen
under hundreds of suspended sacks of discarded clothing
it’s believable that they are on their way
for its efforts to outstrip the criticism of its business
what it needs most is a hard and fast timeline for that circular future

and Superman faced off against an invasion of werewolves at the box office
there’s occasionally a fundamental alignment where multiple creatives end up working on the same kind of project at the same time
That’s how you can end up with several Wyatt Earp films in the same year or more than one book from the point of view of Jack the Ripper or even several firehouse dramas
but three werewolf-related pictures within a span of five months: The Howling
not just because of the overall comparatively smaller frequency of werewolf films
but also because the films all hit in spring and summer
The Wolf Man trailer (Uploaded to YouTube by Movieclips Classic Trailers)
The seeds of that year’s films started getting planted in the late 1960s
While working on the film Kelly’s Heroes in Europe
John Landis was struck by local Yugoslavian Romani performing a graveside ceremony
That occurrence coalesced into the idea for a darkly comedic horror screenplay that Landis finished and stuck in the fabled “writer’s drawer,” partially because some parties found it too funny to be scary or alternately too scary to be funny
After having several successes as a director of comedies like Animal House and The Blues Brothers
Landis finally got the backing to make An American Werewolf in London
two 1970s novels had been moving through the development process
which was the first of a trilogy for the writer
The tone of the novel doesn’t quite have some of the underlying humor that creeps in at the edges of the screenplay; that’s most due to John Sayles
who came in when director Joe Dante asked him to doctor the earlier drafts
keeping some elements of the novel but also working in some satire on the media and self-help movements
As all of these projects were coming together at their various studios (Embassy for The Howling
one significant thing would tie them together: the quantum leap forward that film special effects had made in the decade prior
While some of the earlier monster films had breakthrough make-up and transformations that were riveting for their time
the effects and creature designs that had advanced under the likes of Kubrick on 2001: A Space Odyssey
and other filmmakers and artisans were now available for horror filmmakers
Rick Baker was originally set to do special make-up effects on The Howling
but he elected to switch to American Werewolf
who had previously worked with Landis on Schlock
would become one of the most celebrated craftsmen in his field
He passed the baton on Howling to Rob Bottin
whom Baker had mentored; Bottin had worked on Star Wars
even appearing as one of the members of the Cantina band
Both Bottin and Baker would apply their considerable talents and cutting-edge artistry to their respective films
resulting in what are two of the finest transformation sequences in horror on screen
Both scenes would propel interest in the films through both critical praise and word-of-mouth
The transformation scene from The Howling (Uploaded to YouTube by ScreamFactoryTV)
and nearly made back its cost on the opening weekend
eventually pulling in just under $18 million against the $1.5 million budget
Parts of the film read as a love letter to classic horror fans
with a number of cameos from classic actors and genre stalwarts
and Famous Monsters of Filmland publisher Forrest J
Much of the attention for the film focused on the dynamite transformation scene; while menacing Karen White (Dee Wallace)
Eddie Quist (Robert Picardo) changes into a massive bipedal werewolf
Bottin was launched into a stellar effects career; his next two films with director John Carpenter
The trailer for Wolfen (Uploaded to YouTube by Warner Bros.)
writing that it was “an uncommonly intelligent treatment of a theme that is usually just exploited” and “a provoking speculation on the terms by which we share this earth with other creatures.” Ebert also noted it wasn’t properly a werewolf movie
The most notable effect deployed in the film was a series of clever POV shots for the Wolfen that look like infrared or thermal imagery
Later films would pick up this technique to show supernatural or alien threats tracking their prey
Secrets Behind the Iconic Transformation: An American Werewolf in London Bonus Feature Spotlight (Uploaded to YouTube by Universal Pictures All-Access)
When An American Werewolf in London arrived in August
Critical acclaim and popular interest made the film a big hit
The mix of humor and horror lured people in
but Rick Baker’s outstanding work captured both attention and imagination
American Werewolf features a show-stopping transformation sequence
The film also portrays a number of undead characters in progressive decay (these characters continually appear to haunt the titular werewolf
The film directly resulted in the MPAA adding a Best Makeup category to the Oscars
Michael Jackson approached Landis about directing a video for his song “Thriller” after seeing the film
Not only did Jackson’s albums go back to the top of the charts
but the video also became a worldwide phenomenon
driving up viewership for MTV and Showtime (who also had a deal to show the video and its “Making Of” companion)
and becoming the first VHS tape to sell over a million copies
Fox-led Teen Wolf made $80 million on a $1.2 million budget in 1985
the rest of the decade’s films that featured werewolves were either straight-up comedies (like Transylvania 6-5000) or hybrid horror-comedies (like Waxwork)
horror audiences largely flocked to slasher flicks or other supernatural horrors
You can find films popping up from time to time or see the character type appearing alongside other monsters in the likes of the Underworld and Twilight franchises
Rumor has it that Marvel Comics’ own Werewolf by Night will be popping up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the near future (Moon Knight
made his first appearance in that character’s comic)
the shapeshifter has been largely supplanted by vampires
It could be that we’re just scared of different things now
Maybe you should never count any monster out

Ever since the early cinematic outings of Universal's original wolfman way back in the early twentieth century
cineplexes have always been stalked by werewolves
and all manner of lycanthropes over the decades
As a distinct horror sub genre the werewolf movie spikes in popularity on occasion
This phenomenon is evidenced by the early eighties deluge of quality werewolf flicks from Animal House director John Landis' An American Werewolf in London to Gremlins helmer Joe Dante's The Howling to
A more recent revival of the genre came in the early 2000's with the superb indie Ginger Snaps reimagining the werewolf movie as a puberty metaphor
whilst Scream director Wes Craven's Cursed reimagined it as a terrible teen movie
Amongst all this cinema history there are bound to be overlooked gems dotted through the werewolf's time spent onscreen
so this list is here to highlight the most underrated movie outings of the humble wolfman (or woman) over the years
A frequent presence in lists of horror movies both under and overrated
genre legend/ Carrie author Stephen King is so prolific that you just knew he had to provide a spin on the enduring werewolf myth in his many years as the reigning king of horror literature
Coming after a string of successful werewolf movies in the early eighties had exhausted many audiences to the sub genre's appeal
Silver Bullet is a 1985 adaptation of King's little appreciated novel Cycle of the Werewolf
A small town werewolf mystery/ coming of age movie
the film is a superb vehicle for the talents of stars Gary Busey and Cory Haim
melding involving family drama with fast-paced horror elements for a stellar piece of classic King which deserves to be better remembered

They do exist, the good things! Even in fashion! Wolfen in Berlin Mitte is one of those rare shops, where everything is designed by the team and is later hand sewn. There is even a cardigan which has been part of the collection for years, that is knitted in the city of Wolfen by a group of old ladies - the oldest over 80.
The small city in Sachsen Anhalt is not only eponym of the Berlin-based label, but also the home of designer Jacqueline Huste. She studied architecture and worked as an architect in Berlin for three years, before she remembered her passion for fashion. Sewing has been such a natural part of her life, that she didn’t even think about making it her profession.
But in 2001 she did and she founded her label for womens-and menswear and rented a studio at Max-Beer Straße in Mitte. After delivering to other stores for 6 years, she finally opened her own and integrated it into her studio.
Today she only sells her collection at the showroom, which she opened 5 years ago in Auguststraße. It was designed with a friend and holds various elements of the Filmfabrik Wolfen, thus combines past and present.

This month, one of my favorite horror films, Michael Wadleigh’s (Woodstock) Wolfen (1981)
Wolfen goes beyond the normal hack and slash and chooses instead to delve deep into issues like power
A city cop is assigned to solve a bizarre set of violent murders where it appears that the victims were killed by animals
he learns of an Indian legend about wolf spirits
disheveled Albert Finney (The Browning Version)
and an electrifying performance by Edward James Olmos (Stand and Deliver)
After a wealthy real estate developer and his wife are brutally murdered
weary cop Dewey Wilson (Finney) is called out to the case
and wolf hairs have been found on the victims
Finney teams up with reporter Rebecca Neff (Venora) and discovers that the tycoon was planning to redevelop a derelict section of New York City
Their trail leads them to Eddie Holt (Olmos)
a Native American who works on skyscrapers
Wolfen is less a “werewolf” movie and more a revenge movie
living in a burnt out shell of the outer reaches of the city
are attacking to savagely defend their territory
But as Finney navigates this world where civilized men are blinded by greed
While the special effects may seem dated now
the thrilling point of view ‘wolf vision’ is still as mesmerizing now as it was then
This technique is used to show the intelligence of the Wolfen instead of having a physical transformation from a wolf
are the beautiful stark visuals depicting the sprawling margins of the city
Underlying Wolfen is an angry theme of human greed
and how nature will rise up to try and correct the balance
This complex subtext will always make it one of the most fascinating horror films of its genre

style-over-substance thriller from director Gareth Evans
The hunt for the real killer will lead Dewey Wilson (Finney) to enigmatic local Native American Eddie Holt (Edward James Olmos)
While most werewolf movies are content to leave the conflict between man and beast
Wolfen adds a further dimension to the story by threading supernatural and ecological themes throughout the film
Holt tells Wilson and Neff about a native legend of creatures called the Wolfen
There is a gritty feel to the slum areas and an open airiness to the bridges
The POV from the Wolfen creatures is unique and well done
with sweeping tracking shots and a pulsating heartbeat
The sound itself also makes this film rise above your average werewolf film
Wind and chimes are a continuing theme that provide both light and shadow
Wolfen is an extraordinary werewolf film worth taking the time to seek out
