GF Building Flow Solutions (formerly Uponor) has made further advances on its journey towards carbon neutral operations
adding Hutchinson and Zella-Mehlis to its range of manufacturing locations that have reached carbon neutral status (scope 1 and 2)
This result highlights GF Building Flow Solutions’ ongoing commitment to minimize resource consumption
Chief Technology Officer at GF Building Flow Solutions
said: “GF Building Flow Solutions strives continuously to pioneer sustainable water solutions for buildings while reducing its operations’ environmental footprint helping also customers reach their sustainability goals
Out of GF Building Flow Solutions’ 13 manufacturing sites
Our factory in Nastola (Finland) reached carbon neutrality in December 2023 and our factory in Virsbo (Sweden) reached it earlier this year.”
GF Building Flow Solutions’ pipe production process at the Hutchinson site consumes ample electricity
causing most of the factory’s emissions and offering a major opportunity for emission reductions
Key actions at the plant in Hutchinson included focusing on electricity consumption
energy efficiency and the use of green electricity since 2021
These measures have reduced the site’s emissions by about 94% as compared to the baseline year 2019
The Zella-Mehlis manufacturing site started the transformation to carbon-neutral production already ten years ago when it transitioned to 100% certified green electricity
Key measures at the plant in Zella-Mehlis covered energy-efficiency actions in manufacturing and in the buildings including the installation of a heat pump-based heat recovery system in 2023 to replace district heating
These measures have reduced the site’s emissions by about 95% as compared to the baseline
according to GF Building Flow Solutions’ Carbon Neutral Factory concept
will be offset through a combination of tree-based carbon removal verified and retired using the Verra registry and biochar-based carbon removal using the Puro.earth or Carbon Standards International registry
I’m proud of our track record of reducing electrical energy consumption
and now Hutchinson achieving the designation of being a Carbon Neutral manufacturing site,” says Jon Sillerud
Vice President of Integrated Supply Chain at GF Building Flow Solutions Americas
“This demonstrates our continued commitment to being an industry leader on sustainability.”

She was a great entrepreneur and made economic history: Ursula Ida Lapp
She was not only an energetic and very successful entrepreneur
but also a woman with heart and high social responsibility
She left a long lasting mark on the LAPP company
Together with her husband Oskar Lapp (1921 – 1987)
which today is the world market leader for integrated connection solutions
This would not have been possible without Ursula Ida Lapp
Ursula Ida Lapp was born in Benshausen (Thuringia)
She was Paul and Anna Emmelmann’s second daughter
Her father was a carpenter and her mother came from a family of gunsmiths
Ursula Ida and her sister Gisela now had to take care of the household and kitchen
Ursula Ida attended primary and secondary school in Benshausen
She was talented in music and dreamt of a career as an operetta singer
Ursula Ida trained as an office clerk at Mercedes
an office machinery manufacturer in Zella-Mehlis
Ursula Ida appeared on stage and sang the main role in the operetta “Das Walzermädel von Wien”
her later husband Oskar Lapp noticed her for the first time
They met shortly afterwards at the shooting club festival in Zella-Mehlis
just back from captivity as a prisoner of war
Her initial sympathy quickly grew into attraction and a deep love
The wedding bells sounded for Ursula Ida and Oskar Lapp
The young Lapp family didn’t feel at home in the GDR
While Oskar Lapp is curing a sudden gall disease at his sister’s house in Pforzheim
wife Ursula Ida is being investigated by the state authorities at home in Benshausen
She didn’t have it easy and had to report to the police every day
Then she left for the West via Berlin with her son Siegbert and only a handbag
Starting a new life was difficult for the young family
as all their belongings and assets were left behind when they escaped to the West
Oskar Lapp found a job in Echterdingen as a consulting engineer at for a manufacturing company in North Rhine-Westphalia
He developed the first rectangular connector for the industry
He invented the first industrially manufactured power and control cable – an invention that revolutionised connection technology
the invention was the first industrial product ever to be given a brand name
The name ÖLFLEX® was created at the kitchen table
It stands for oil-resistant and flexible cables
The married couple Lapp founded the company U.I
With a bank loan of 50,000 marks as start-up capital
Ursula Ida Lapp registered the company U.I
There she didn’t let herself be shaken even by critical enquiries
“I don’t properly speak the Swabian language
but I can certainly work like the Swabians.”
As often happens with businesses in their infancy
the Lapps initially did business from the garage of their home in Stuttgart-Vaihingen
Lapp set quality standards that are still applicable worldwide in cable production today
ÖLFLEX® was the right product at the right time and was a huge hit
Oskar Lapp took over the sales work and visited companies
Ursula Ida Lapp stayed at home because the children were still young
she wrote promotional letters and took care of the bookkeeping
the couple hired an electrician to support them
who often travelled to the freight station with Ursula Ida Lapp with a handcart and later in a Volkswagen bus
The economy was getting underway and the demand for ÖLFLEX® was enormous
The money earned by the couple was invested in expanding the company
The couple found their first sales partners in Switzerland and Israel back in 1960
The garage and garden were also used for the company
Lapp Kabelwerke GmbH was founded in Galileistraße in 1963
the company headquarters was moved from the family home to Schulze-Delitzsch-Strasse – today’s company headquarters
The first international subsidiary was founded in 1976 by the Lapps in the USA
More brands were added: UNITRONIC® data communication systems
SILVYN® cable protection and guiding systems
ETHERLINE® data communication systems for ETHERNET technology and FLEXIMARK® marking systems
To offer customers the best service in the field of connection technology
produced and supplied “everything from a single source” – a principle that remains LAPP’s recipe for success today
Ursula Ida Lapp was always at her husband’s side
She advised and supported him wherever she could and had his back
The children also learned how to help at a very early stage
On 25th April 1987 Oskar Lapp suddenly died of a heart attack
His sons Siegbert and Andreas Lapp took over the management of the company together with their mother
and successfully carry on running the company in the founder’s spirit
The company grew both nationally and internationally
determination and entrepreneurial vision are virtues shared by the two second-generation leaders of the company
Ursula Ida Lapp established the Oskar Lapp Foundation in memory of her husband and the entrepreneur
The number of international companies was growing
The LAPP Group is now represented in the main international markets in Asia
Andreas Lapp became Chairman of the Board at LAPP Holding AG

To mark the 50th anniversary of ÖLFLEX®, LAPP organised a superlative event – the ÖLFLEX® World Tour
where special events were held for customers and employees

The Walther Model 6 semi-automatic pistol represented the company’s first attempt to break into the 9mm military sidearm market in 1915
Essentially an upscaled version of their successful .32 caliber Model 4 blowback pistol
the Model 6 retained the basic unlocked action but with a heavier slide and spring to contend with the 9mm Parabellum cartridge’s greater power
the simplistic blowback system proved ill-suited for the round’s pressures
leading to rejection by German forces who preferred a locked breech
So while a number were privately purchased and saw use
the Model 6 never achieved widespread adoption
Yet it kickstarted Walther’s move toward full-size military handguns
presaging their subsequent P38 and PPK fame
The Model 6 ultimately faced obsolescence as combat pistol design progressed
“Manufactured in limited numbers during the First World War
the Model 6 was Walther’s first move into the full-size military pistol market
In overall design the Model 6 shows a very strong mechanical resemblance to Walther’s vest pocket guns
while also meriting comparison to the Fabrique Nationale product of the time as well as later developments by Star with full-power straight blowback semi-automatic military pistols
with the left side of the slide marked “Selbstlade-Pistole Cal.9m/m
Walther’s-Patent.” over the Walther banner ahead of a small “GERMANY” export stamp and the early one-line address “Carl Walther
Blasii was one of the communities merged together to form Zella-Mehlis in 1919
which would remain Walther’s headquarters until the post-WWII Soviet occupation.”
