(ABC TV) Link copiedShareShare articleTwo Australian female cyclists remain in a critical condition in a German hospital after a training accident that claimed the life of their team-mate Amy Gillett. Twenty-nine-year-old Gillett was killed when a car hit a group of six riders from the Australian Institute of Sport women's cycling team. The accident occurred near the town of Zeulenroda, 80 kilometres south of Leipzig. Gillett, who was a member of the Australian women's rowing eight which finished fifth at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Australian ambassador to Germany, Pamela Fayle, said police had confirmed the crash occurred when a driver lost control of her car. It is believed the driver of the car was just 18-years-old and only had her licence for four weeks. Cycling Australia chief executive officer Graham Fredericks said Alexis Rhodes had a thoracic fracture and serious concussion and Louise Yaxley had suffered "major trauma" that required surgery. Mr Fredericks said the condition of the three other riders - Katie Brown, Kate Nichols and Lorian Graham - was stable. He said Brown had a seriously fractured leg, Nichols had soft tissue damage and torn tendons in her hand which required surgery, and Graham had multiple fractures of her knees, fingers and both collarbones. All the cyclists are being treated at different hospitals. Mr Fredericks said the recovery of the cyclists would be closely monitored. "Our focus now is on the well-being of those athletes, to monitor them through their recovery process until they are well enough to travel back to Australia," he said. "It is certainly in a very tense moment while we hope the other two are pulling through OK." Ms Fayle said the group's coach Warren McDonald was travelling behind the riders in a car and was also recovering from the ordeal. "Obviously he's very disturbed by what happened, very upset, but I talked to him last night (European time) and he's coping as well as might be expected," she said. Yaxley's sister Belinda said it had been a frustrating wait for news on her condition. "The worst thing is just not knowing what's going on and just the frustration of the accident in general and how it happened," she said. The head cycling coach at the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI), Ian McKenzie, said he was hopeful Rhodes, a SASI scholarship holder, would make a full recovery. "Alex is an extremely talented person, extremely nice human being and she's currently in a tough situation," he said. "But her major character is one of toughness and I'm sure she'll use all her will power to pull through." McKenzie said Rhodes' parents were on a flight to Germany to be by their daughter's bedside. "They were notified shortly before I was, early this morning," he said. "They're very tough people and that's where Alex gets her toughness from and I'm sure that they will handle the situation well and we just hope that everything goes well." Nichols' father Kevin, who won a gold medal in the 4,000-metre team pursuit at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, said his daughter was doing her best to cope with the trauma of the accident. "She was trying to be upbeat but she's obviously traumatised by the incident and it'll be a long way to get over this event," he said. Earlier today Lorian Graham's mother, Lorna, told the ABC her daughter had broken bones and was having surgery. "They were six total and they were riding along and a car came over the white line and hit them head on," she said. "Lorian I am told is one of the better ones out of it. One poor girl has been killed and I'm not sure what the other four are like as I haven't heard as yet." Australian Sports Commission chairman Peter Bartels, who flew out for Germany this afternoon, said the cyclists were among the sport's emerging talents. "It's an elite training squad, it isn't the squad that competed at the Olympics last year but it's an emerging squad," he said. "They are very serious contenders I would have thought for Commonwealth Games selection next year." A memorial service for Gillett will be held in Germany early on Wednesday (AEST). CNN and the BBC World Service which is copyright and cannot be reproduced AEST = Australian Eastern Standard Time which is 10 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) assistant head and a sixth grade teacher of Our Lady Immaculate Primary School had a very fruitful experience during the week they spent with their project colleagues in a secondary school in Zeulenroda This week was part of the Comenius project in which the Hamrun school is participating The theme of the project is "Interculturality: A new challenge for Europe" The other partner schools are in Madrid; Pays de Loire the representatives of the participating schools realised that all of them have problems but they can always try to overcome them They talked about what they are doing with regard to the project sharing ideas and discussing individual plans The German hosts made the Maltese participants feel very much at home even though the weather was far from 'homely' In fact it snowed heavily and it was very cold did not dampen their enthusiasm in the activities prepared for them the participants had a very informative meeting with the mayor in the town hall the Maltese participants had lessons with the German schoolchildren and showed them a video about Malta The children asked various interesting questions about Malta Then it was time to talk about the feast of St Martin in Malta The feast is very popular in this German town but they do not celebrate it as we do in Malta with the borza ta' San Martin given to the Maltese children So the German children were quite surprised when they received some boroz sharing their contents - nuts The next meeting in this Comenius project will be held in May in Slovakia to which Our Lady Immaculate Primary School is looking forward please register for free or log in to your account.
