Up to 13 batteries are charged from 40 kW to 80 kW in a grid- and battery-friendly manner that does not cause typical grid peaks
but the swap station is the second generation of the company's product currently in use in China
the battery swap stations built by Nio in China prior to last April are first-generation products that hold up to five battery packs and have a maximum daily service capacity of 120 swaps
the vehicle's existing battery is replaced by a fully charged battery
Nio's battery swap stations allow users to enjoy an exceptional charging experience without putting undue strain on the local distribution grid
The condition of the battery and electrical system is carefully checked at each swap to ensure that both the car and the battery are in optimal condition
"Nio is the first OEM in Germany to establish a functioning power swap system standardised for all Nio models and enables a fully automatic battery swap in five minutes," said Ralph Kranz
"This gives Nio users maximum flexibility: in addition to being able to switch to a different battery size at any time and thus upgrade the vehicle as needed in the future

In China, as of September 28, Nio had 1,141 battery swap stations and 1,930 charging stations, according to data monitored by CnEVPost

A visionary project that could solve the challenges posed by future mobility: The Sortimo Innovationspark Zusmarshausen is located directly on the A 8 motorway between Munich and Stuttgart and has over 144 charging points
of which 24 are designed as “SupraChargers” with an output of up to 420 kilowatts (kW)
The site is planned as a DC energy hub that is intended to provide current and power to electric vehicles as quickly and efficiently as possible – and use current and power that is primarily generated locally to do so
There are currently no vehicles on the market that can demand so much power
120 further DC fast-chargers are available
With 140 kW in the first stage of development
they already exceed the common market standards for battery charging: it takes about 45 minutes
The idea and planning behind the Sortimo Innovationspark Zusmarshausen came from Frank Steinbacher, Managing Director and Partner of eLoaded GmbH and Steinbacher-Consult
Sortimo Innovationspark Zusmarshausen GmbH is the building developer and investor and the market leader for vehicle equipment and mobile transport solutions
The company is investing a 2-digit million amount in the first stage of the project
“Up to 4,000 cars can be charged at our site every day,” says Steinbacher: “This is the equivalent of a driven distance of over 400 million kilometres per year”
Thanks to its modular design and power supply concept
the 140 kW fast chargers can be upgraded to 280 kW without having to make any further changes to the infrastructure
New technical solutions allow the design for a 140 kW charging point to be reduced to the size of a 22 kW slow charger
The charging site is set to come into operation in the first half of 2021
and offices in the first phase of construction
there is also space for businesses and research facilities
The charging site is used for its own fleet and the customers’ fleet
as well as for the first fast electric bus route between Zusmarshausen and Augsburg
The charging site is also available for private vehicle users
At Sortimo, the electricity comes from a regional photovoltaic unit. Water power can also be used if required. The energy distribution is based on a DC supply network. Frank Steinbacher brought LAPP on board when it came to direct current. The global market leader in integrated connectivity systems is a pioneer in direct current
LAPP has developed a special DC cable for the innovative project
which can also be used to provide greater output in the short term and which enables heat development in the cable to be controlled
LAPP has developed the complete DC bus for connecting charging stations
including hybrid DC cables for control and online monitoring
The cable design is demanding: the cable specially designed for eLoaded consists of an aluminium conductor with a 30 mm2 cross-section
The core insulation is electron beam cross-linked polyethylene
Shielding is achieved using copper wires applied over the core in spirals
The design is supplemented by two stainless steel pipes
These are used for measuring the temperature and trigger an alarm if the temperature at the charging points becomes too high
The bus is then used to control where alternative free charging capacity is available
The outer sheath is made of PVC according to IEC 60502

The use of direct current plays a central role in eLoaded’s projects
“We no longer want to think about things in terms of AC
we can achieve savings of 20 – 25 percent in terms of energy efficiency,” says Steinbacher
The charging site could also save around 30 million litres of fuel and 60,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year

German utility vehicle maker Sortimo has embarked upon what it says will be the world’s largest EV charging station on the A8 highway at Zusmarshausen between Stuttgart and Munich
which is set to offer 144 charging stations

Charging infrastructure is one of the key factors in creating a smooth and robust transition to electric vehicles
and the speed with which EVs can charge according to charger capacity (and what drivers do while that happens) must also be taken into account
Sortimo has recognised this need – while the 350kW will allow EVs to charge in as little as 10 minutes
so Sortimo’s charging station project is complimented by an “Innovation Park” which includes a shopping centre and conference rooms where drivers may book rooms for meetings while they wait
Sortimo’s plans including storage of surplus renewable energy harvested from a network of surrounding companies and private homes
as well as thermal management to use waste heat to help power the park’s buildings
Sortimo states that for each year the station is use

Two fully electric Mercedes eCitaro in Germany have covered a combined 200,000 kilometres within the space of exactly one year of tough regular-service operations
The Egenberger bus company from Thierhaupten near Augsburg has saved more than 100 tonnes of CO2 emissions by using the vehciles on the 506e line of the Augsburger Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund (AVV) public transport network
the two e-buses have been in almost permanent operation between Zusmarshausen and Augsburg
An unusual aspect is that the electric urban buses are used on a 20-km-long regional bus route
Its 21 bus stops include the terminus stops at Augsburg’s University Hospital with its university campus and the Zusmarshausen school centre
meaning the route enjoys high numbers of passengers
The batteries of the buses have a capacity of 292 kWh which get charged both at the terminus stops as well as by means of intermediate charging along the route
Subsidised by the German federal government and the State of Bavaria
this project is limited in time until 2026
The eCitaro buses are used in alternation with the Citaro hybrid
Coloured LED strips mark the entrance on the outside and the exit on the inside
Folding ramps at the doors facilitate access for passengers with limited mobility
Additional glazing on the sides of the vehicle underneath the beltline allows even more light than usual into the already welcoming interior
Passengers sit on Inter Star Eco intercity seats with high backrests and leather-clad head restraints
Information is provided on three TFT monitors
And for those passengers who prefer their own entertainment
the buses are equipped with numerous USB sockets for charging mobile devices and a Wi-Fi router with Internet connection
The Egenberger company also ensures its drivers enjoy high levels of comfort with equipment like a climate-controlled driver’s seat or a coolbox for drinks
Greatest possible protection against infection is
also ensured by the separation of the driver’s workplace from the entrance area
Further protective measures include hand sanitiser dispensers and cashless payment of tickets in the bus
drivers benefit from additional support as the vehicles are equipped with all of the currently available assistance systems
These include the active braking assistant Preventive Brake Assist and the Sideguard Assist turning aid
To facilitate the task of driving in inner-city traffic
the vehicles feature an electronically actuated speed limiter set at 53 km/h
The Egenberger bus company is family-run in the third generation
The company is partner to the Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund AVV (public transport association) in Augsburg and also operates tourist travel and a bus rental service
For the most part the fleet with more than 70 buses comprises Mercedes-Benz vehicles
