workers have taken action over proposed changes to the crane production facilities in the country
Members of the IG Metall union are on strike over plans announced in February by the Japan-headquartered crane manufacturer to realign its European crane manufacturing operations
These plans involve closure of the Wallerscheid wheeled mobile crane factory near Zweibrücken and investment to be made in the other plants in Germany
The union is reported as demanding that everything be kept open until 2032
The strike started Thursday 5 September following a vote during a town hall meeting held on Tuesday
“In negotiations with the works council and IG Metall
no agreement has been reached on the planned restructuring of Tadano Demag GmbH
to strike at the two plants in Zweibrücken from 5 September 2024
The duration of the strike is currently not foreseeable.”
the originally announced loss of more than 400 jobs has been reduced by about 30 per cent to around 300 people
That would take the total of around 1,200 to about 900
the plan is to move production from the Wallerscheid factory to the existing factories in: Dinglerstrasse (Zweibrücken)
the planned relocation will involve investment in the other facilities
more space has been acquired at the Dinglerstrasse plant where there will be production line investments
including new paint facilities and a new repair shop
plus expansion of the testing area with new test pads
The company said its next step is to put in place a neutral arbitration board to resolve the issues
It will be an independent body charged with helping to find “a viable and binding solution for both sides.”

The southwestern German town of Zweibruecken has been associated with horses for centuries
a duke who presided over the area began breeding a type of horse for military and courier work
would eventually gain admiration from Prussia’s Frederick the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte of France
It also was among the first in Germany to stage organized horse races
horse enthusiasts can find related activities in the town throughout much of the year
is unique in that it’s virtually in the center of town
It hosts two race days per year that include harness races
in which horses pull two-wheeled carts that carry riders
and others in which jockeys ride on horseback
Contests are spaced about a half-hour apart
bartenders are busy pouring sparkling wine and making Aperol spritzes while spectators line up for snacks in the festive atmosphere
There’s also a steady stream of people making their way to the betting area
and it should be possible to find an assistant to explain the options in English
The races are broadcast throughout Germany
and people also wager on them online and at betting shops across the country
Despite the prevalence of gambling and booze
the race days are surprisingly family-friendly
Children’s laughter is regularly heard from the wooden bleachers and the grassy seating area closer to the track
The year’s first race day was held in mid-April
For those more interested in horse riding than racing
the nearby Zweibruecken State Stud hosts several contests
It’s one of 10 historical German state studs
that date back to when horses were essential for transportation
the studs are geared toward breeding for equestrian sports
the Zweibruecken stud is the smallest of the 10 but one of the oldest
Successive conflicts destroyed its original structures
The present facilities were built after American bombs destroyed much of the town during World War II
a sense of history is palpable around the grounds
an outdoor riding area and two riding halls
all of which are located on a picturesque tree-lined street near the Schwarzbach tributary
The informational signs throughout the grounds can be read in English with a phone translation app
Visitors who are interested in learning even more about the town’s horse history can check out the Zweibruecken Stadtmuseum
which is about a 10-minute walk from the racetrack and the stud farm
this small town has had an outsized affection for horses
Witnessing this tradition firsthand can make for a very interesting day out

soldiers taking part in the Christmas Eve festivities at the Buerger family home in Zweibruecken
entertainment included rousing games of Cards Against Humanity and shots from skull-shaped glasses
It may not have been the most standard means of celebrating the yuletide
Matthew Fox nevertheless had no problem fitting in with his hosts
Ulf and Manuela Buerger and their teenage son T.J
“I feel like I’ve known these guys for a long time,” Fox said
adding that it was a blessing for him to be with Buergers for the Christmas season
who is assigned to the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion-Enhanced at Baumholder
is one of about a dozen single American soldiers stationed in the area who spent the holiday with German host families
part of a decades-old program reactivated this year for the first time since the coronavirus brought it to a halt in 2019
the program has paired about 1,100 American soldiers with German families since it was launched in the 1970s
Fox is the third American soldier the Buergers have welcomed through the program
two additional soldiers the family knew through a friend joined their festivities independently
“I know how it is to be alone at Christmas,” said Buerger
this is about bringing friends together and having a good time
Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz organizes Operation Good Cheer
which it says is aimed at fostering cultural exchange and understanding
The soldiers and host families met for the first time at a group event earlier in the month
the soldiers received invitations for Christmas Eve
the day after Christmas — which is also a German holiday — or a combination of days
particularly those celebrating with alcohol
Viktoria and Florian Gerss donned medieval German outfits to welcome Sgt
both with the 515th Transportation Company at Baumholder
The couple live near the town of Birkenfeld and have a penchant for medieval reenactments
they have participated in Operation Good Cheer for several years
They even invited a soldier they had previously hosted for Christmas to celebrate with them when the program was suspended
“We connected with the soldier and wrote often so that soldier came to us twice without Operation Good Cheer,” Viktoria said
McMullen said the thought of spending the holiday in the home of people he’d only recently met was intimidating at first
joining in a game of Uno with the Gerss family as honey wine flowed
but I never got to experience actual German family culture,” McMullen said
“That’s why I thought this would be a cool experience.”
Another soldier with the 515th Transportation Company
spent Christmas Day in the neighboring state of Saarland
with Alexander and Tina Schweitzer and their 9-year-old son Silas at their home in Primstal
“Nobody should be alone on Christmas,” Tina Schweitzer said while serving coffee and cakes next to a towering Christmas tree
“And I can speak English,” Silas interjected
saying what he considers his favorite aspect of the program
The Schweitzers signed up this year for the first time after seeing an advertisement in a German newspaper
They’re already planning to participate in Operation Good Cheer next year
and they invited Porter over for another visit in the spring
thinks there should be more initiatives linking soldiers with the German community to help “build a home away from home.”
A simple Christmas get-together can have a lasting impact on all those involved
“The first soldier we ever hosted wrote to me a few months ago and said he found a photo from that night,” Buerger said
“He explained how he had problems with father figures in the past and that he still thinks about the good time he had here
a French regiment with German-speaking troops helped defeat the British at Yorktown
thus ending the American Revolutionary War and assuring the United States’ independence
Descendants of those who fought in the war joined local officials Saturday to honor the regiment and the two brothers who led it by unveiling a plaque in their hometown of Zweibrucken
“We are very proud as the city of Zweibrucken that we are part of the history of the U.S.A.,” the city’s mayor Marlod Wosnitza told roughly three dozen people who attended the unveiling
“We have a long-standing partnership with this country.”
The plaque — bestowed by the Daughters of the American Revolution
a lineage-based group whose members descend from people who supported the United States’ independence efforts over two centuries ago — is located on the site of Christian and Wilhelm von Zweibrucken’s former family home near the city’s center
known by its French name Regiment Royal Deux-Ponts
It included members from the Palatinate and Saarland regions of Germany and eastern parts of France
Roughly a year after arriving in North America
the regiment took part in the Battle of Yorktown
which proved to be the decisive engagement of the Revolution
forcing British troops to surrender and paving the way for the Treaty of Paris in 1783
The Palatinate chapter of the DAR in Germany paid for the plaque and worked with local authorities and DAR officials in the U.S
Some members of the chapter live in the nearby Kaiserslautern Military Community
American flags were given to attendees and a local band played songs
including The Star-Spangled Banner and Yankee Doodle
About two dozen other members living in Germany and France also attended
“This is a specific part of our common history: French
the regent of DAR’s Rochambeau chapter in France
the former reporter general of DAR’s National Society
“Being in this country with these women who still remember their heritage
it’s all really important,” Kammeyer-Price said
adding that the new plaque should help others remember this piece of American
the fact that these two brothers came to the United States and were part of this decisive battle,” Kammeyer-Price said
“To honor them like this is really wonderful.”
Mayor Wosnitza pointed out parallels between the regiment’s 18th century efforts and the support the U.S
as it fights to repel invading Russian forces
“Ukraine is in a war fighting for their independence,” Wosnitza told the crowd
“[The] country has to be defended by their people and by us all.”

A few dozen German students — with their Canadian housemates in tow — packed into the council chambers at city hall Monday night as they were welcomed to Barrie as part of the Youth Ambassadors program
Zweibrücken is a town of approximately 34,000 people located along the Schwarzbach river in the Rhineland-Palatinate area of southwest Germany.
there has been a steady stream of students going to and from the two cities to learn more about each other's culture while also forging long-lasting friendships.
chairman of the city's international relations committee
called the program "enormously special" in how it's handled with officials in Zweibrücken.
from the beginning we established that we would allow the other country to establish some of the basic rules," he said
which is one of Barrie's friendship cities
Morrison said their visits to Barrie are required to be in the summer, can't involve school and are typically just two weeks in length
"But Germany saw it differently; it had to include school and it had to be at least a month
because there was no way the Germans were going to come across the pond for less than that amount of time," he said.
Morrison says it was an easy handshake to make
The city and the Simcoe County District School Board have partnered with the Global Perspectives program (which Morrison used to co-ordinate before retiring) for more than two decades.
Around 1,000 German and Canadian students have participated in the exchange.
that can say they have anything remotely like this," Morrison added.
Mayor Jeff Lehman said there's no better way to learn about someone else's culture than by simply immersing yourself in it.
"We live in this time where we talk to each other through our phones and not face-to-face," he said
adding there's a mutual benefit for students from both countries
The mayor encouraged the students to enjoy their stay.
"I really hope you enjoy your time here in Canada
you enjoy your time here in Barrie and know that you take back to Zweibrücken the friendship of a city that has lasted for many years and will continue to for many years to come," he added.
a math and physics teacher leading the German delegation here in Canada
said he has heard many stories about the exchange in the high school halls back home.
"You cannot help but hearing students speak enthusiastically about the Canada exchange and what an amazing experience the trips are (and) the friendships that are formed," he said
noting it also teaches students to think on a global level.
But it never occurred to him that he could also reap the benefits himself
after being part of the global family for a year and a half
I can tell you that taking part in this program means much more than I'm able to put into words," Lehmann added
the Zweibrücken area had a long-standing military tradition
It was also home to a NATO military air base that was controlled by the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1953 until 1969
and by the Americans from 1969 to 1991 when it closed
Later in the evening, council also approved the establishment of a legacy fund with the Barrie Community Fund for the Youth Ambassador Program at Monday's meeting
The City of Barrie is also a friendship city to Murayama
it alternates each year with either a group coming to Barrie or one going to Murayama
which is a city of around 25,000 people and located approximately 400 kilometres north of Tokyo.
When a Japanese delegation left Barrie in August
grown by a Japanese farmer who has been to Barrie several times
It was officially presented Monday night and is considered to be a significant honour on behalf of the Japanese people
vice-chairman of the city's international relations committee
made the presentation on behalf of the Japanese delegation.

The group, called Kameradschaft Nationaler Widerstand Zweibrücken (NWZ), made the announcement on its Facebook page, saying it wanted to show "solidarity with Horst Mahler on the occasion of a performance of the Söhne Mannheims".
But the town of Esch-sur-Alzette has warned that it has not given authorisation for the protest -- named 'Marionettes put our people in chains: freedom for Horst Mahler' -- to be held.
A request for authorisation was sent to the town of Esch-sur-Alzette by email, but it was refused for "security reasons".
A town official said: "In addition to our obligation to guarantee the security and maintenance of public order, the town of Esch-sur-Alzette, which is a member of UNESCO's International Coalition of Cities against Racism, stresses that the subject of the manifestation is absolutely incompatible with the principles of the constitution of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the values of Luxembourg society as a whole."
The NWZ group reportedly wants to show support to the German Holocaust denier Horst Mahler, who, after his conviction for a prison sentence, fled to Hungary and applied for asylum as "political refugee".
