The Scandinavian country has become a wedding destination for people looking to tie the knot without too much paperwork.
Roughly 800 couples have said “I do” so far this year in Aabenraa’s two centuries’-old town hall
Aabenraa, a coastal Danish town with fewer than 17,000 inhabitants about half an hour’s drive from the German border, is not exactly a major tourist destination, yet the visitors it receives are surprisingly diverse. Many stay for just one or two nights, and come for the same reason: to get married. Dozens of couples arrive each week, and about 90% from abroad.

Aabenraa's name comes from aaben strand
or Danish for "open beach." Denmark had long used "aa" to represent a Danish vowel sound that's a little elusive for English speakers
but is kind of similar to the vowel in our word "caught." But in 1948
the country decided to reform its spelling
replacing "aa" with "å," an "a" topped with a little circle
That's how this vowel is written in every other Scandinavian language
the Danish Language Board recommended that Aabenraa rename itself "Åbenrå."
Aabenraa wasn't having it. For one thing, the town, like much of southern Denmark
had a sizable German minority that thought the new spelling looked weird
Denmark decided that their new letter "Å" would be the last letter of the alphabet
coming after "Z" in the dictionary
which was accustomed to being the world's very first town alphabetically
was unenthusiastic about moving to the very bottom of the list overnight and giving up the lead to Aachen
the country could start spelling its name "Qazaqstan" going forward
I'm not holding my breath for that to "qatch" on
up-to-the-minute voice in all things travel

Aabenraa Municipality and Museum Sønderjylland are cooperating to turn the plans of a large and modern museum right here where you are standing into reality
The museum will become a meeting place between the guest and the maritime and art history of the border country
will get the space and attention she deserves just now
when the world has really discovered her importance
Aabenraa is in the middle of an exciting transformation
using history and art are the central focal points
Aabenraa Municipality is creating an exciting district around the museum
The district will meet the demand for new attractive homes
cafes and restaurants in the middle of the city and close to the waterfront and forest
The museum on Kilen will tell a completely different story than the one we otherwise associate with the borderland
the time under German rule and the Reunification with Denmark in 1920 that are in focus
the new museum will let the guest encounter the Danish-German borderland as a cultural bridge that in Aabenraa gained – and has – a global reach
The exhibitions and the surroundings will set the stage to play
experiences and spend time together across the generations
No Danish artist has played such a central role for the European avant-garde as Franciska Clausen
While Europe was engulfed in the flames of the First World War
she established ties with what became the art environment of the European avant-garde in the 1920s and 1930s
and soon she was an equal colleague with them and with other world-famous artists such as Le Courbusier
On behalf of the Foundation for Franciska Clausen's Collections
Museum Sønderjylland houses more than 2,500 of Franciska Clausen's works
in addition to the main works that are in the museum's own possession
She preserved life through an experimental practice
we offer the public the opportunity to experience a permanent presentation of Franciska Clausen's works
We want to create opportunities for special exhibitions where we can show works by Danish and international artists
and have the opportunity to show their work as part of an innovative international art movement
we want to present Franciska Clausen as the pioneering artist she was
If you have used the Atelier Europa pod walk
The pod walk is 2.5 km long and takes 45-60 minutes
It starts at the tourist office at Storegade 30 and is used via the free StoryHunt app and is also available in English
you get an insight into Franciska Clausen's life as a central figure in the vibrant avant-garde art environments of Germany and France
You see "the city as shapes" through her eyes

We would like to spread the awareness that some of the most famous Danish visual artists have their roots in the border country
the monumental expressionist Svend Wiig Hansen and the modernist Claus Carstensen
These artists are joined by representatives of younger contemporary art such as Søren Behncke and Astrid Kruse Jensen and works purchased at the artists association Grænselandsudstillingen (The Gränseland exhibition)
which Franciska Clausen was among the initiators of in 1971
Until the museum here at Kilen opens its doors
it is at Brundlund Castle that you can meet changing exhibitions with a selection of Museum Sønderjylland's collection of over 4,000 works from the end of the 18th century to the present day
The historic and atmospheric setting at Brundlund Castle has roots back to the 15th century
when Queen Margrethe I gave it to the city
The art experience continues in the castle park
among hedges cut in a shape inspired by Franciska Clausen's artistic expression
Here you will find a wonderful collection of sculptures in the beautiful
and you can enjoy something good from the museum's café on the terrace
You will find information about the current exhibition here: https://msj.dk/brundlund-slot/
The place name Kilen tells you that you are standing on a dammed cove
it is primarily due to the access to the deep fjord
its fish and its access to the world's oceans
The cove was dammed in 1856 to make room for a growing town
and Aabenraa still benefits from having a vibrant commercial port
There will be a view of it from the new museum.
The maritime history in Aabenraa is not the same as in the rest of the country
because the town only became part of Denmark in 1920
During the wars with England in the early 1800s
the city was not bound by the same restrictions as
It was extremely lucrative for both shipyards
Shipping and shipyards made Aabenraa a thriving town
The city's streets contain well-preserved and beautiful environments and houses from the 18th and early 19th centuries that very few other Danish cities can match. The city's shipyards built large wooden ships that were among the largest
The ships were owned locally and were manned by local and visiting sailors who made a living sailing on the oceans of the world
The Visual Arts Council in Aabenraa Municipality is behind two maritime guides: one in Aabenraa City and one on Løjt Land
Both can be picked up at the tourist office in Storegade 30 and can be found digitally here:

Here he built the shipyard that was to become one of the largest in Denmark
Northern Europe's largest and fastest merchant frigate
The association Det Maritime Kalvø runs a small museum in the shipyard's old main building "Herrehuset"
you will learn more about how Bruhn's activities – in addition to lucrative and dangerous long voyages on the world's oceans – also included piracy and industrial espionage

Apple has canceled plans to build a $921m data center in Aabenraa
and instead will expand its soon-to-be-completed Viborg data center
The 285-hectare site, originally purchased by the company in 2017
“As we near completion of our new Viborg data center in central Jutland
we’ve decided to focus on growing that site instead of building an additional data center in Aabenraa,” Apple said in a statement
In a post on its official website
the Aabenraa Municipality called the decision "completely unexpected." Director Stig Isaksen wrote (translated): "It is my view
that this is an overall strategic business decision made in the United States
and that the decision has been taken entirely independently of the circumstances of the Aabenraa Municipality."
Mayor Thomas Andresen added: "This is undoubtedly an undesirable bump on the way for Aabenraa Municipality's long-term efforts to create jobs and increased settlement out of the establishment of data centers in Aabenraa Municipality
Apple is not the only player in that market
and as our data center strategy clearly describes
we have a targeted strategic effort aimed at
two data centers in operation and two in planning in 2022."
Google also owns 131 acres in the municipality
but has no immediate plans to build a data center there
Apple will instead focus on its Viborg facility, which is behind schedule. In April it was revealed that the company had fired the project's main contractor
It is unclear what the current state of the data center
is - although Apple did note in today's statement that they were nearing completion
The company has suffered a rocky development path for its European data centers, spending years trying to build a facility in Galway, Ireland, before canceling the project after years of delays
In addition to its own facilities, Apple uses AWS, Google Cloud, colocation facilities, and small cloud companies. Earlier this year, CNBC reported that the company had signed an agreement to spend at least $1.5 billion on AWS over the course of five years

Technology firm Siemens Energy has secured an order from European Energy to deliver an electrolyzer plant for what is deemed as the world’s first large-scale commercial e-methanol project that will ultimately provide supplies for Maersk’s methanol-fueled fleet
Denmark-based European Energy is developing the large-scale commercial e-methanol production facility with the hydrogen being provided by a 50 MW electrolyzer plant by Siemens Energy
supply and commission the electrolysis system consisting of three full arrays of its line of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis products
distributed control systems (DCS) and the equipment to produce demineralized water
procurement and construction as well as the operation of the facility
located west of Aabenraa in the South of Denmark
Through the nearby 300 MW solar park of Kassø
the project will have access to the low-cost renewable electricity needed to produce cost-effective e-fuel
said: “We are pleased to place this important order of what is believed to be the first large-scale commercial Power-to-X-project of its kind in the world
“This is a crucial moment in the green transition as we move forward with the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors such as the shipping industry
and we trust that Siemens Energy’s … know-how of electrolyzers will become a strong foundation to expand our business of delivering sustainable fuels to the world.”
the companies informed that end-users of the e-methanol will be the shipping company Maersk and the fuel retailer Circle K among others
The start of commercial methanol production is planned for the second half of 2023
The project secures the e-methanol supply for Maersk’s first e-methanol driven container vessel
and thus demarks the starting point into CO2-neutral shipping on a large-scale
the Danish container shipping and logistics giant announced plans to add twelve 16,000 TEU methanol-powered containerships to its fleet
The first order placed in August 2021 includes eight vessels with the first unit slated for delivery in the first quarter of 2024
The second order of additional four methanol-powered boxships was revealed at the beginning of 2022
The quartet is planned for delivery by 30 May 2025
the next-generation vessels will be 350 metres long
53.5 metres wide and will look significantly different from what has been seen before for any larger container vessels
The eco-friendly newbuilds will be classed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and sail under the Danish flag

If you're moving to Denmark and have the luxury of being able to choose where to live
You could have your big city needs scratched in Copenhagen
live off organic produce on the island of Samsø
take things slowly in a rural town like Ebeltoft or feel the force of history in Ribe
We wanted to hear from our readers on the best places to live as a foreigner in Denmark
Copenhagen is the city where you're most likely to encounter a foreigner in terms of pure numbers -- but is it also the most highly-rated
The short answer to this is yes -- but only just
in which 4 people chose Copenhagen as their answer (and one said Frederiksberg and another Østerbro
so you could group them together if you want to and make 6)
Aarhus and Aalborg were close behind though
with four and three people voting for them
Næstved and Randers got a vote each and one answer was illegible
We'll start with the case for the smaller cities
Næstved has a "thriving international community
the great belt bridge and eventually the tunnel to Germany - all with sensible property prices," said Rich Hanrahan
"Even Barack Obama and now Venus Williams had to visit!," he added in referral to appearances by the two to give talks in the city
Foreign nationals in Næstved are encouraged by Rich to "get involved in local life and join Internationals in Næstved."
Raymond Kassah is a Ghanaian who has lived in Randers for seven years and works as head chef in a restaurant in Skanderborg
Randers is "a very diverse city which is also close to Aarhus
the rain forest and a vibrant night life as well," he said
"Foreigners wishing to move to Randers should be aware of the fact that a lot of people will say negative things regarding this city but it is the opposite," Raymond said
yes but now Randers is one of the most safe
Rent is also very cheap compared to other cities," he noted
a pharmaceutical professional who works in the city
The hometown of author Hans Christian Andersen is a "laid back
very friendly city" with an "easy going vibe," he said
Wes advised newcomers to Odense to "start learning Danish
Northern city Aalborg is a good option as a "smaller city that has everything" and for its "very friendly residents" one contributor wrote
while another mentioned its international university as a plus
Put your kids in the international school," she advised
a Brazilian working at the Computer Science Dept at Aarhus University
While he backed Aarhus as a great place to live as a foreigner
Diego said you should "brace for impact in terms of housing prices."
READ ALSO: Working in Denmark: What’s considered a good salary in Aarhus
said the town has a "medium city vibe but very approachable"
an Italian resident said it has "kind people and excellent services"
A fourth reader who voted for Aarhus cited its proximity to nature
with forests and beach both in cycling distance of the centre
among many of the plus points pointed out by readers who filled in our survey
There are "more job opportunities in Copenhagen"
The district of Østerbro is "family friendly
close to just about everywhere," wrote Nana
You "won't regret" choosing this district of the many Copenhagen has to offer

The project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians
The purpose is to improve the lighting conditions and treatment for patients who are hospitalized for depression
Technical University of Denmark and Chief Psychiatrist Klaus Martiny at Rigshospitalet expects the project will give results that will form the guidelines for lighting in psychiatry in the future
The project is expected to be completed in 2019 but recent surveys performed among doctors
and others at another Danish psychiatric institution which already adopted such human centric lighting
revealed that the circadian lighting encouraged a calmer
cosier atmosphere and had improved sleep both for patients and for staff
Aabenraa installed the Ergonomic Circadian Lighting system back in September 2015
The surveys specifically asked about the effects of lighting compared to the old
The idea behind circadian lighting is to mimic the day/night pattern of the sun
providing blue-enriched light during the day and modulating it toward ambers at night
77% said patients were calmer; 65% said patients slept better; 57% reported fewer night-time disturbances and 38% even observed a reduction in drug consumption among patients
The staff also benefitted the human centric lighting directly
54% of the surveyed feeling more energized
and 47% admitting they were sleeping better

Listen (in Danish) to stories about some of the 3,000 people who gathered in front of Folkehjem in 1918 to hear the Danish-minded politician H.P
Hanssen’s speech – a crucial declaration in the struggle to see Southern Jutland reunited with Denmark
Dansk
Deutsch
The town of Aabenraa is home to the Danish-style community house Folkehjem
as a place where Danish-minded North Schleswegians – who called themselves “Southern Jutlanders” – could meet and speak Danish among themselves
At that time Aabenraa was German territory
and the law forbade members of the Danish minority to speak Danish at public gatherings
it was also easier to arrange communal activities in a forsamlingshus
modelled on the Danish tradition of community houses – which are still found in many Danish villages today
In 1918 the Great War (which we know as World War I) was in its final stages
but it had cost more than 5,000 North Schleswegian men and boys their lives
as they had been obliged to fight in the German army
The Language Society had been working long and hard to arrange a referendum for the Danish minority in this part of northern Germany
which would enable them to vote on which country they wanted their part of the region to belong to: Denmark or Germany
the Language Society had convened a meeting of its members
along with local Danish electoral associations from the whole North Schleswig region
Hanssen presented what soon became known as the Aabenraa Resolution
possible to organize and hold a referendum in North Schleswig
But there was one problem about the meeting as a way to get the message across: the Royal Reception Hall and all others rooms in the Folkehjem building were full to bursting point
In the grounds outside Folkehjem some 3,000 people had gathered
impatient to hear the wording of the Resolution
had no problem addressing a large audience
he stepped out onto the balcony of Folkehjem and read the entire declaration out loud to the crowd – in Danish
Genforeningsparken or “Reunification Park” is located in the very spot where the crowd gathered that day
The footprints in the flagstones around the park are reminders of these people
These indicate a specific person we recognize on the photograph taken that day from the Folkehjem balcony
Descendants and people who knew these individuals have shared the stories passed down to them by their parents
You can either listen to the actual interviews (in Danish) with the people one step away from eye-witnesses to the 1918 events

Google acquires 120,000 sqm next to existing data center
Google and Facebook have both this week acquired large tracts of land in Denmark for potential data center developments
Google has acquired 120,000 square meters (1.29 million sq ft) of land in Taulov
while Facebook has bought 212 hectares in Andrup
Back in June 2017, Google acquired a 73.2 hectare (7.8 million sq ft) plot of land in Fredericia for $9.86m. It subsequently acquired another 131 acres in the municipality of Aabenraa to the south
In 2018 Google finally announced plans to build a 4.5 billion Danish Kroner ($690m) data center in Fredericia
but is not listed on its GCP infrastructure map
This week Fredericia City Council approved the sale of a business area of just over 120,000 sqm to Google
The acquired area is a direct extension of the current data center in the Princess' Quarter in Taulov
and that a purchase right of an additional approximately 375,000 sqm (4 million sq ft) was also approved
"We are proud and happy that Google has chosen to get involved in Fredericia
Google is buying into more options here in the future
And of course a statement that Google wants Fredericia,” said Mayor Steen Wrist
Google has reportedly not outlined its plans for the land
“We already have a really good relationship with Fredericia and are happy to be here and get involved in the city
we get the opportunity to expand our presence at a later date
Exactly how is still too early to say," said Google data center manager
Facebook has acquired 212 hectares of land in Andrup in Esbjer at a price of DKK 277 million ($43 million)
The municipality said the social network and advertising firm can start the initial planning and survey activities on the land for the future possibility of building a data center
“I am very happy that Facebook is back in Esbjerg and now again investigating the possibilities of establishing a data center in Andrup,” said Mayor Jesper Frost Rasmussen
“The signing of the purchase contract is just the first milestone in this process
The establishment of a data center will be completely in line with our ambitions to become a data hub
and at the same time the construction and operation of a new data center will be able to attract additional companies in the field to Esbjerg and create synergies with our current companies.”
Facebook was reportedly in the process of investigating the area between 2018-19
but decided to stop the land acquisition and development of the project
Esbjerg City Council subsequently acquired the land as part of a strategy to attract investors and become a data hub
“We recently resumed our studies of Esbjerg as a possible site for a future data center and bought 212 hectares of land,” said Facebook spokesperson Lukasz Lindell
which will help to support the further development of the area
The construction of a data center does not start until a final investment decision has been made
We are also pleased to collaborate with such a good team in our studies of how Esbjerg can possibly support our business' future needs.”

In the national Power-to-X tender in Denmark
European Energy won with all three bids submitted by the company
One of the winning projects will be one of the world’s largest e-fuels facilities with an electrolyzer capacity of minimum 150MW
This next-generation facility will be situated near Padborg in Aabenraa municipality in the southern part of Denmark
close to European Energy’s e-methanol facility in Kassø which is currently under construction
With the winning bid for an e-fuel facility in Padborg
European Energy now starts developing a facility that is three times larger than the existing Kassø facility in the southern part of Denmark leading the way towards larger projects that can satisfy the rapidly increasing demand for e-fuels
European Energy won bids for two other projects
One being a second phase of the company’s green hydrogen project in Maade
and the other being an expansion of the e-methanol facility in Kassø. This will add 9MW and 10MW of capacity to the projects for a total of 12 MW and 60 MW

European Energy has created a supply chain using biogenic CO2 and renewable energy sources to forge an integrated e-fuel supply chain
European Energy is set to scale their expertise and consolidate their position in the field
„Denmark’s bold stride to add 280 MW of new electrolyzer capacity within four years reflects our government’s commitment to transitioning from fossil fuels to sustainable alternatives in both transport and industry
this move also intensifies the need for a robust hydrogen infrastructure and access to biogenic CO2 to further support a world-class Power-to-X industry in Denmark“
Executive Vice President and Head of Power-to-X in European Energy

European Energy already plans to inaugurate the first of its large-scale commercial e-methanol facilities in 2024. The facility is in Kassø in the municipality of Aabenraa
and it will produce more than 32,000 metric tonnes annually
have already partnered as offtakers for the e-methanol
The world’s largest e-methanol plant will not only produce green fuels
but also supply green heat to the citizens of Aabenraa municipality
European Energy has entered an agreement with Aabenraa Fjernvarme to supply excess heat from the e-methanol plant
the plant will supply heat to 3,300 households
European Energy has entered into an agreement with Aabenraa Fjernvarme to take the surplus heat from the future e-methanol plant at Kassø in Aabenraa Municipality
This means that more climate-friendly and cheap district heating will enter heating network
Even though the e-methanol plant’s primary focus will be to produce e-methanol
it will during the process of converting hydrogen and carbon dioxide into e-methanol generate a lot of excess heat
The surplus heat will be able to benefit the citizens of Aabenraa Municipality
as it can be included as part of the heat supply in the municipality
the plant has the potential to supply heat to 3,300 households
„We are very happy with the agreement with Aabenraa Fjernvarme
This collaboration shows the citizens of Aabenraa Municipality that there are local
green benefits when renewable energy projects come to the local vicinity
the collaboration will provide valuable knowledge on how we can get the most out of the world’s largest e-methanol plant
and thus also show in practice how sector coupling can be made with other future Power-to-X projects“
Head of Project Economics & Optimization
„We are very happy with this agreement that we have entered with European Energy
The more surplus heat we can use in our district heating system rather than producing it ourselves
When we can use resources that are left from other processes
it is a win-win for everyone: for the climate
The plant will also contribute important knowledge about how we integrate and operate this type of sector integration“
The e-methanol plant will be connected directly to the Nordics’ largest solar park in Kassø and will therefore partially run on locally produced green electricity
The location of the facility means that Aabenraa Fjernvarme will establish a heating line to the facility close to the Kassø substation
– The future pipeline is dimensioned in such a way that it is very easy for us to connect extra surplus heat to our district heating system from e.g
data centers or the other heat sources from the PtX facility
European Energy expects within a few years that even more surplus heat can be collected as more experience is gained in the operation of the facility
Part of the funding for the integration between European Energy’s PtX plant and Aabenraa District Heating comes from Det sydjyske erhvervsfyrtårn
which is a collaborative project where a number of organisations
universities and the South Jutland municipalities have organized themselves into the ‘Committee for Green Energy and Sector Coupling’
The Danish Board for Business Promotion has awarded the Business Lighthouse EUR 14mllion from REACT-EU for 13 test and demonstration projects in Southern Jutland as well as educational initiatives with a focus on green energy and sector coupling

Fyrtårn Syd has helped identify the district heating project as one of the promising examples of sector coupling – that is
energy solutions that cut across the traditional energy sectors and link the different forms of energy more closely together
„We are happy to have contributed to this project being realized and to be a pioneering project for others in the region on how to abolish silo thinking within the energy sector and thus develop the efficient and flexible energy solutions that we need in the green transition
who is chairman of the Committee for Green Energy and Sector Coupling
In addition to European Energy and Aabenraa Fjernvarme
Aalborg University and the University of Southern Denmark are also participating in the development of the new district heating solution
– The facility is connected directly to the solar park in Kassø and will produce green methanol for
among other things Maersk’s first fossil free container ship
– The green hydrogen is produced by splitting water through the supply of solar cell power in an electrolysis plant
– The surplus heat from the production comes initially from the surplus from the process where
