Poul Henningsen hated bright lights and glare
So he designed better lights that today are in cities worldwide
BY Diana Budds
Many of these luxe lamps had much humbler beginnings. They can trace their core principles to a street light Henningsen invented for a 1919 competition held by Copenhagen Energy, the city’s public utility. At the time, Copenhagen was undergoing electrification and transitioning from gas lamps, which were highly ornate dragon-shaped fixtures by an architect named Vilhelm Dahlerup
The city wanted to develop a new aesthetic to go along with them
the manufacturer that produced his products
believed that well-designed lighting was a social
“At a time when a lot of people didn’t necessarily have electricity at home, creating good street lighting was particularly important,” says TF Chan, the author of the new Phaidon book Louis Poulsen: First House of Light
“That was their first interface with technology.”
Henningsen, who practiced architecture, thought the extreme brightness from electric light bulbs required a new approach. The fixtures available at the time were adaptations of lamps intended for candles and other traditional sources of illumination
which didn’t mask the harshness of a light bulb
His innovation was to diffuse and disperse light in order to make experiencing it more comfortable
He devised a glass cylinder with an enamel shade that masked part of the bulb and directed the light downward at oblique angles
His minimalist design won the public utility’s competition and was installed in the city to mixed reviews
and eventually Copenhagen Energy removed some of the shades to make the lamp brighter
the concepts Henningsen explored in this prototype continued to influence his work as a lighting designer
Henningsen began a career-long collaboration with lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen in 1924
which included light fixtures for international expositions
Among the higher-profile designs were spiral-shaped outdoor lights for Tivoli Gardens
an amusement park that inspired Disneyland
“A lot of the lamps that we might think of today as domestic designs actually had their origin in public spaces
and really important public spaces as well
that were central to civic life in Denmark,” Chan says
“This very distinctively Danish company comes out of a unique set of circumstances and reflects all the social changes that you’ve seen in Denmark over the years.”
In the 1960s Henningsen and Louis Poulsen revisited street lighting
since by then light bulbs had become even brighter
which of course is good for illuminating spaces
but also meant that the architect and designer had to devote more thought into making sure that the users wouldn’t be experiencing glare,” Chan says
They created a system designed to illuminate street traffic evenly by angling the light to follow the direction of headlights
That system was installed in a few cities in Germany and Denmark (although it turned out to be flawed because it could cause glare for oncoming traffic)
Henningsen’s philosophy continued to influence public lighting
Jens Møller-Jensen created an affordable street lamp for a planned suburb outside of Copenhagen called Albertslund
His prototype was inspired by Henningsen’s early design and had a very similar shape—a glass cylinder with a metal hat—but was much simpler and affordable to produce
which originally appeared in a small town in Norway
All of which to say: The designer’s personal obsession with making lighting in the public realm comfortable as well as functional ought to be revisited as a civic ideal

Danish hard rock veterans PRETTY MAIDS played their first concert in nearly five years this past Sunday
The band was billed as KINGMAKERS for the "secret" performance
which served as a warm-up gig for PRETTY MAIDS's official return to the live stage on Thursday
June 20 at the Copenhell festival in Copenhagen
Fan-filmed video of both concerts can be seen below
Among the other already announced PRETTY MAIDS shows for 2024 are the Time To Rock festival
PRETTY MAIDS will also perform aboard the 2025 edition of the annual Monsters Of Rock Cruise
2025 aboard Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Joy and depart from the Port Of Miami
Last December, PRETTY MAIDS singer Ronnie Atkins, who is battling stage four cancer, spoke to Jorge Botas of Portugal's Metal Global about the announcement that he and his bandmates were planning to reunite in 2024 to play several concerts
we were planning on a few selected PRETTY MAIDS shows
six festivals during the summer or something
It depends on how much it conflicts with our individual schedules
since the things are what they are and PRETTY MAIDS
we got some really good offers and we haven't played together since 2019."
He continued: "I know there's a lot of fans out there that wanna see the band again
It all ended in a wrong way because I got sick
So we just wanna go out and play a couple of shows
It all depends a little bit on my health as well
now I've been releasing a lot of music for the last couple of years
'Cause I like the close encounter with the fans
whether it's a big festival with 50,000 or it's 200 people in a club
Last September, before the PRETTY MAIDS reunion was officially announced, Atkins was asked in an interview with Power Metal Point if there were any plans for him to do anything again with the long-running Danish hard rock outfit
He responded: "There's been issues between the band since 2019
and we still have some business through 40 years we have to discuss sometimes on mails
I think it's gonna end up that we will bury the hatchet
He continued: "It's always been a love-hate relationship
but I think we might do some selected gigs next year or something like that
Because the whole thing ended in a bad way and I got sick and we had a brand new album out in 2019 and we never hit the road with it
Atkins painted a more bleak picture of PRETTY MAIDS' future
telling Dawn Osborne of TotalRock: "We haven't seen each other since 2019
And there are some issues within the band that haven't been [resolved]
I'm not saying we won't get back together one day
It would need some talks — a band meeting and some talk — before we go on
PRETTY MAIDS continued to release albums usually followed by European and Japanese tours
came out in November 2019 via Frontiers Music Srl
"Future World" was released by CBS in 1987
the album had sold 300,000 copies worldwide
165 on the Billboard 200 in the United States
"Future World" was produced by Eddie Kramer
who was reportedly fired during the recording sessions
The band then finished the LP with engineer Chris Isca
who was credited as co-producer on the album
Mixing duties were shared between METALLICA
RAINBOW and MORBID ANGEL producer Flemming Rasmussen
known for producing multi-platinum albums by JOURNEY
After being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2019
the now-59-year-old Atkins underwent at least 33 radiation and four chemotherapy treatments in the fall of that year before being declared cancer-free
Atkins joked that the secret to keeping his voice in shape was "twenty cigarettes a day and little drink now and then."
was released last October via Frontiers Music Srl
What a blast playing to such a fantastic audience tonight 👊

When walking from the Albertslund commuter train station in Denmark
the sight of a man in a tub screaming in horror while his bathroom is flooded by sewage will probably catch your eye
The odd fountain is the work of Danish artist Peter Land
The artist uses the piece to raise the question of what happens when the social framework that forms the basis of a society breaks down or is challenged
a well-functioning society is something people take for granted
These bathroom structures breaking down could
be described as a plumber's nightmare; a metaphor for what would happen if society should suffer a similar fate
Land is also aware of the response art like this can provoke
particularly from members of the community who pass it often
The fact that the piece elicits strong reactions was especially evident when
someone beheaded the man sitting in the tub.

Peter Madsen, whose high-profile case received international attention following the murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall in 2017, was seen in a photo published by the Danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet sitting in the grass with his hands behind his back as police nearby trained their weapons on him
At a news conference, Copenhagen West Region police confirmed that Madsen escaped Herstedvester Prison in Albertslund on the outskirts of the capital using a fake pistol and a belt that looked like a bomb. He was recaptured less than a mile from the prison, police said, according to the daily Jyllands-Posten
was quoted by Ekstra Bladet as saying that Madsen had been driving a white van when officers surrounded him and then pulled him from the vehicle
was first arrested in 2017 following his rescue after the sinking of the submarine he designed and built
who had been working on a story about the inventor
was last seen alive on the vessel just before its sinking
It was more than a week before authorities found her torso washed up ashore in Copenhagen
She was later found to have more than a dozen stab wounds in and around her genitals
Madsen initially told police he had dropped Wall safely ashore but later changed his story multiple times – first, saying he had "buried her at sea" after a heavy hatch fell on her head
Madsen's UC3 Nautilus submarine sits on a pier behind police tape in Denmark's Copenhagen harbor in 2017 as authorities investigated the disappearance of Swedish journalist Kim Wall
Madsen later was sentenced to life in prison for Wall's murder
Divers later found Wall's severed head in a weighted bag
and further investigation revealed no signs of blunt force trauma to the skull
casting doubt on Madsen's version of events
claiming that she died of carbon monoxide poisoning aboard the sub
Before trial, Madsen admitted to dismembering Wall's body but continued to maintain he had not killed her
He was found guilty of premeditated murder and sexual assault and sentenced to life in prison in 2018
In a documentary that aired last month, Madsen reportedly admits for the first time to the murder

Denmark (AP) — A Danish man convicted of torturing and murdering a Swedish journalist on his homemade submarine made a dramatic but brief escape from a suburban Copenhagen prison Tuesday
reportedly taking a hostage to break out before police recaptured him
Peter Madsen was quickly apprehended near the Herstedvester prison where he is serving a life sentence for the killing of Kim Wall
Justice Minister Nick Haekkerup called the escape attempt "very serious."
Police said Madsen appeared to be carrying fake weapons
including a "bogus" explosive belt
he threw away something that looked like a firearm," said Mogens Lauridsen
operations chief of the suburban Copenhagen police
one of Denmark's most notorious criminals
was captured about five minutes after the escape and around 500 meters (less than a half-mile) from the facility
Prison personnel who followed him saw that he had jumped into a passing white van and informed police
Lauridsen said that they don't believe Madsen had an accomplice
Police officers then found on Madsen "what seems to be a belt with explosives," Lauridsen said
officers stepped back and Madsen was left on the side of a road while a bomb squad investigated the belt
Prison head Hanne Hoegh Rasmussen told a news conference that the escape was being investigated and that he couldn't immediately confirm media reports that Madsen took a female prison psychologist hostage inside the prison
"No one has been injured physically," Hoegh Rasmussen said
adding that prison staff were getting psychological support
The facility has 161 cells and has a wing with inmates who have psychiatric
Madsen was sentenced in the Copenhagen City Court to life in prison for killing Wall
a 30-year-old reporter from Sweden who he lured aboard his homemade submarine in 2017 with the promise of an interview
He dismembered her body and dumped it at sea
shortly after apologizing to the victim's family who were present in the appeals court
The sensational case has gripped Scandinavia
He claims she died accidentally inside the submarine
but he has confessed to throwing her body parts into the Baltic Sea
Life sentences in Denmark usually mean 16 years in prison
but convicts are reassessed to determine whether they would pose a danger to society if released and can be kept longer

Greater Copenhagen is on its way to testing driverless electric shuttles which
could form part of a future light rail link connecting Denmark’s capital to Albertslund
Gladsaxe and other outlying municipalities
The LINC project is part of efforts to ensure easier connection to mass transit
by combining intelligent autonomous technology and sustainable urban planning
The light rail and the driverless buses will help ensure that we also have smart
green and flexible ways to transport us collectively
The upcoming light rail is a decisive step
but the driverless buses can ensure that even more people will choose green and collective transport
each carrying up to 15 passengers and legally driving at up to 20km/h on public roads in traffic
will be tested over six months at the Danish Technical University (DTU) campus (12km north of central Copenhagen) with more than 500 dedicated users
Several smaller demonstrations and tests will be done on closed roads at the Hersted Business Park in Albertslund (14km west of Copenhagen)
The tests are designed to collect information about the shuttles’ performance and commuters’ experience
in collaboration with IBM and Roskilde University
With the help of nearly 300 Bluetooth beacons on the campus
the app will enable users to see the shuttles’ locations and allow researchers to collect data on how people use them
LINC is an attempt to bridge the ‘first and last mile gap’ – where public transport is often not close enough to people’s homes or workplaces – and attract people to mass public transport
the solution is the light rail system scheduled for completion in 2025
The Greater Copenhagen light rail will have 29 stations and connect Copenhagen with 10 municipalities on its outskirts
This is all part of the LOOP City plan to develop Copenhagen around easily accessible public transport
It is expected that the autonomous shuttles will increase the attractiveness and efficiency of public transport by reducing waiting times and providing schedules that respond to public demand
the project will give urban planners a better idea of the physical and digital infrastructure needed to integrate autonomous public transport into sustainable urban planning
the Danish Road Traffic Authority approved three autonomous Easymile shuttles made in France for use in the project
They had to meet Danish safety requirements for traditional vehicles
One aspect of this year-and-a-half-long process was obtaining the correct documentation for electromagnetic radiation which is emitted by the electric shuttles
Several hurdles remain before the first passenger can set foot on a shuttle
The entire application – a project and route description
a risk assessment and assessor's safety report – has been submitted to the Danish Road Directorate for processing
This must then be approved by the Minister of Transport and the Danish Parliament’s transport committee
The legislation allowing the system to be put in place will need to strike a balance between innovation and safety
testing the shuttles could start on the DTU campus late in autumn 2020
COVID-19 and ongoing restrictions on public transport have delayed the smaller demonstrations and tests planned in Albertslund
LINC was formerly named TUPPAC: Transforming Urban Planning Providing Autonomous Collective Mobility
The project is backed by the ERDF and Urban Innovative Actions
an EU initiative that gives cities funding to implement bold and creative projects
Seven partners are working on the project: the municipalities of Albertslund and Gladsaxe
private companies Nobina Denmark and IBM Danmark ApS
the Technical University of Denmark and Roskilde University
and non-profit partnership organisation for a green transition Gate 21
Total investment for the project “LINC – Transforming Urban Planning and Providing Autonomous Collective Mobility” is EUR 4 214 120
with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 3 371 296 through the “Regional Research and Innovation” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period
The investment falls under the priority “Development of TEN-T and multimodal transport”

A Danish inventor convicted of murdering journalist Kim Wall on his submarine
has been recaptured after he escaped from a prison in suburban Copenhagen
where he reportedly took a hostage and threatened guards with a bomb
Peter Madsen fled the Herstedvester Prison
after threatening a prison employee with what appeared to be a home-made explosive on Tuesday
The killer managed to get around 500 meters from the prison before he was recaptured in a massive police operation
Video footage published by the Danish newspaper shows the convicted killer sitting in the grass with his arms behind his back while armed police watch him from a distance
Madsen had a "belt-like object" around his stomach
Police on Twitter confirmed a man had been arrested in Albertslund after attempting an escape
experts determined the belted object around Madsen's abdomen was fake
police said at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon
said no one at the prison was injured during Madsen's escape
but added that the incident had traumatized employees
Madsen has previously been placed in solitary confinement due to suspicions that he was plotting an escape
The prison was placed on a lockdown on Tuesday
with inmates confined to their cells so they could be searched
Madsen was sentenced to life in prison in 2018 after he was found guilty on charges of premeditated murder
aggravated sexual assault and desecrating a corpse
an award-winning freelance journalist from Sweden who had reported from around the globe for outlets including The New York Times and Time magazine
boarded Madsen's homemade submarine in Copenhagen harbor on August 11
She was reported missing when she did not return from the trip
Her mutilated body was discovered on a beach more than a week later
maintaining that her death was an accident
He admitted throwing her remains into the sea
But in a television documentary that aired recently, Madsen finally confessed that he killed her. The confession was made to a journalist who secretly recorded more than 20 hours of phone conversations with Madsen for the documentary
called The Secret Recordings with Peter Madsen
Madsen replied "yes" when the journalist asked if he had killed Wall

Copenhagen is the site for a huge experiment in smart lighting that could save money
cut carbon emissions and even alert police to suspicious activity
By Aviva Rutkin
HUNDREDS of lights are being erected in a Danish industrial park in a suburb of Copenhagen
When ordinary citizens pass through the area
they’ll be taking part in a massive experiment to work out how we should light our cities in the future
Street lamps can be a major drain on resources: lighting accounts for around 6 per cent of global greenhouse emissions
Los Angeles spent around $15 million and pumped out 111,000 tonnes of carbon to light up its streets
No wonder councils want to find ways of making lighting smarter and more efficient
Copenhagen is setting up the Danish Outdoor Lighting Lab (DOLL) in a suburb called Albertslund
which will open to the public on 18 September
engineers will have freedom to toy with the different products
while foreign officials who are curious about the technology can comparison-shop for their hometown
DOLL is also part of a long vision for Copenhagen itself: the city hopes to install smart lights as part of a quest to become carbon-neutral by 2025
and one of the lights exhibited at the lighting lab will probably be chosen for the job
The city hopes to install its own smart lights as part of a quest to become carbon-neutral by 2025
The street lamps will be installed along 9.2 kilometres of road in Albertslund
covering about 1.5 square kilometres in total
25 companies have reserved space for their products in parcels of land 300 metres square
Every lamp will be assigned a separate IP address so they can be monitored remotely
The city will be testing smart lamps that dim if it is sunny
or automatically alert the city when something isn’t working
Dutch firm Tvilight will be testing street lamps that can adjust their brightness based on nearby movement
And the Technical University of Denmark will be trying the CopenHybrid – a mast that powers a street lamp by a combination of wind and solar energy
weather conditions and UV radiation will also be fitted throughout the site to see what sort of environment the lights are operating in
All this will help work out which lights are making the biggest difference in terms of lowering costs and emissions
Several cities around the world are already investigating smart street lighting
in the biggest project of its kind to date
Los Angeles swapped its entire system for LED lamps – along with a pilot remote control system made by General Electric
is rolling out lights that can detect motion and weather conditions
DOLL wants to encourage more cities to make the change by demonstrating what different types of lamps can do
“You can say that we are an instrument of the green transition,” says Flemming Madsen
Visitors will be able to run tests on the system by using sample data from their own city
Madsen says they are already planning for a visit from Chinese and Taiwanese officials later this year
“We have a huge urban playground,” he says
In the future, DOLL hopes to incorporate other types of smart city services into their living lab
The same network that monitors miles of lighting can be configured to manage parking spaces or water meters
“People don’t want to solve one issue and then having to do a major investment again to solve the next issue and the next and the next,” says John Baekelmans of Cisco
“There is a variety of technologies which you need to tie together in a way to make it a seamless experience.”
Fitting street lamps with complex sensors – and hooking them up to a larger network that controls the city will have implications far outside of lighting
director of the Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York
If a street lamp senses a sudden rush of people in an area that’s usually deserted at night
police could be tipped off to go check the area out
“Really smart street light systems are going to be much more about the sensors the street lights have
The technology is getting very mature very quickly,” Karlicek says

The city authorities are busy implementing a climate change plan to turn Copenhagen ‘carbon neutral’ by 2025
An integral element part of the plan involves the city redesigning its streetlighting solutions. Worldwide
lighting is the source of six per cent of global greenhouse emissions
The Danish Outdoor Lighting Lab (DOLL) is set to open in September 2014 and will stretch for about 9km along the roads of the Copenhagen suburb Albertslund and will cover about 1.5 square kilometers in total
Hundreds of lights will be installed in Albertslund and its local citizens will take part in a major experiment to examine how future cities should use street lighting
As many as 25 companies have reserved space for their products in parcels of land of 300 square meters
Each lamp is being assigned a separate IP address to enable remote monitoring
The project plans to test smart lamps that dim if it is sunny and brighten if a few people pass by at night. Other smart lights will be used to automatically send out alerts when they are not operating correctly
weather conditions and UV radiation will also be fitted throughout the site to see what sort of environment the lights are operating in and will indicate which lights are making the biggest difference in terms of lowering costs and emissions
DOLL wants to encourage more cities to make the change by demonstrating what different types of lamps can do and describes the project as a "huge urban playground"
The project is described as a ‘Living Lab’
key account manager in Street & Outdoor Lighting Thorn Lighting A/S explained it is important to show customers what is the effect of dimming the lights by 50 percent. "It is our experience that customers are becoming more confident at turning down the lights when they see it work in practice
they think that if we dim the lights by 50 or 70 percent
they can see that in an outdoor environment it can be difficult to tell the difference."
DOLL plan to incorporate other types of smart city services into their living lab
We work in the Living Lab with the intelligent city in which we can measure and manage other aspects of urban space
This could be sensors in bins that indicates when to be emptied

People living in Greater Copenhagen will now have an easier time cycling to work or study, thanks to the region’s new network of cycle lanes. The country’s first Cycle Super Highway – which gives cyclists a safe, smooth ride and eliminates as many stops as possible, is now open, connecting central Copenhagen with the suburban town of Albertslund, 22 km outside the city.
In addition to the orange stripe painted on the asphalt that indicates the route
cyclists will also enjoy amenities such as air pumps
safer intersections and traffic lights timed to average cycling speed
The initiatives are intended as a way to encourage more commuters to travel by bicycle
even if their commutes are longer than 10 km
The newly opened Copenhagen-Albertslund route is the first of a planned network that when completed will comprise 26 Cycle Super Highways
The network will increase the number of cycle lanes in Greater Copenhagen by 15 percent and is predicted to reduce public expenditure by EUR 40.3 million annually thanks to improved health
“Eliminating traffic jams requires fewer people driving and more people cycling,” said Ayfer Baykal
who heads Copenhagen City Council’s Technical and Environmental Administration
“There are enormous gains to be had if we can get people to cycle in and out of the city
Collaborating with our neighbouring municipalities to build the bike-bahns is the best thing we’ve done for cyclists since we started building cycle lanes 100 years ago.”
A total of 22 municipalities in the Greater Copenhagen area have all collaborated to build the new network of cycle routes
improve and link existing cycle lanes in Greater Copenhagen
so commuters can quickly identify the easiest route available
In addition to signs marking the new route
an orange stripe has also been painted on the ground along its entire length
“One in three people living in Greater Copenhagen say they would cycle more if it were easier to do so,” Vibeke Storm Rasmussen
chair of the Greater Copenhagen Regional Council
“The bike-bahn is the best thing we can do to make cycling a real alternative to driving for even more commuters
the more we can reduce congestion and pollution – both of which will improve quality of life in Greater Copenhagen.”
Before construction on the Copenhagen-Albertslund route began
cyclists were asked to test ride the distance
Their conclusion was that their commute was disturbed most by red lights and crossroads
traffic signals along the route are timed to give cyclists a ‘green wave’
Timers also indicate when lights will change
which also include redesigning intersections to make them easier for cyclists to cross

Denmark: A Danish police officer was hit by shots Tuesday near a police station in suburban Copenhagen
prompting security outside police stations to be stepped up across the country
sent out two brief tweets Tuesday confirming the 8.20 a.m
Police later tweeted that an officer had been hit and a "possible" shooter had been arrested
"It's a dark day for all of us when those who are supposed to protect us are attacked," Justice Minister Soeren Pape Poulsen said
"It is terrible that it can happen in Denmark."
Local media showed officers in bulletproof vests with handguns and automatic weapons outside the Albertslund and Copenhagen police stations
Denmark's National Police said security at all police stations had been increased "until the situation is clarified."
The attack was the second such shooting in recent months
a man shot two police officers — seriously wounding one — and a bystander in a Copenhagen neighborhood known for its thriving hashish trade
Undefeated Danish cruiserweight Micki Nielsen (20-0
14 KOs) takes another step up the fistic ladder on Saturday
when he opposes Italy’s Mirko Larghetti (24-1
16 KOs) in a 12-round contest at the Albertslund Music Theater in the Albertslund suburb of Copenhagen
as he should be as Danish judges are notoriously partial to homegrown fighters
Larghetti was competitive in his lone defeat
a 12-round setback to Marco Huck in a failed attempt to lift Huck’s WBO World cruiserweight title
the Italian has won three straight inside the distance
The 23-year-old Nielsen is the younger brother of Patrick Nielsen

Gamache is recognized as the only boxer from Maine to hold a world title
Gamache retired with a 55-4 record after suffering a brutal second round knockout at the hands of Arturo Gatti on Feb
Gatti weighed in for the fight at 141 pounds (a dubious reading)
but was 160 on fight night according to the unofficial HBO scale
15 pounds heavier than the ill-fated Gamache
The disparity opened a can of worms that was another black eye for the besotted New York Athletic Commission (a story best told by Thomas Hauser)
Teddy Atlas trained Gamache for a small portion of his career
Gamache worked as an assistant to Emanuel Steward at Detroit’s fabled Kronk Gym before taking his talents to Europe
Danish boxers haven’t fared well when stepping up in class
but Gamache is confident that Micki Nielsen is a future world champion

Japan’s Naoya “Monster” Inoue banged it out with Mexico’s Ramon Cardenas
survived an early knockdown and pounded out a stoppage win to retain the undisputed super bantamweight world championship on Sunday
Japan and Mexico delivered for boxing fans again after American stars failed in back-to-back days
everyone is well aware that I like to brawl,” Inoue said
showed the world and 8,474 fans at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas that prizefighting is about punching
After massive exposure for three days of fights that began in New York City
it was the casino capital of the world that delivered what most boxing fans appreciate- pure unadulterated action fights
Monster Inoue immediately went to work as soon as the opening bell rang with a consistent attack on Cardenas
One thing promised by Cardenas’ trainer Joel Diaz was that his fighter “can crack.”
Cardenas proved his trainer’s words truthful when he caught Inoue after a short violent exchange with a short left hook and down went the Japanese champion on his back
“I was very surprised,” said Inoue about getting dropped
I made sure to not take that punch again.”
but he did have trouble avoiding some of Cardenas massive blows delivered with evil intentions
a look of total astonishment blanketed his face
was never overly aggressive but kept that left hook of his cocked and ready to launch whenever he saw the moment
There were many moments against the hyper-aggressive Inoue
Both fighters pack power and both looked to find the right moment
But after Inoue was knocked down by the left hook counter
he discovered a way to eliminate that weapon from Cardenas
the Texas-based fighter had a strong right too
In the sixth round Inoue opened up with one of his lightning combinations responsible for 10 consecutive knockout wins
Cardenas backed against the ropes and Inoue blasted away with blow after blow
Cardenas turned Inoue around and had him on the ropes as the Mexican fighter unloaded nasty combinations to the body and head
“I dreamed about fighting in front of thousands of people in Las Vegas,” said Cardenas
Inoue looked a little surprised and had a slight Mona Lisa grin across his face
the Japanese four-division world champion seemed ready to attack again full force and launched into the round guns blazing
Cardenas tried to catch Inoue again with counter left hooks but Inoue’s combos rained like deadly hail
Four consecutive rights by Inoue blasted Cardenas almost through the ropes
The referee Tom Taylor ruled it a knockdown
Cardenas beat the count and survived the round
In the eighth round Inoue looked eager to attack and at the bell launched across the ring and unloaded more blows on Cardenas
A barrage of 14 unanswered blows forced the referee to stop the fight at 45 seconds of round eight for a technical knockout win
WBO featherweight titlist Rafael Espinosa (27-0
23 KOs) uppercut his way to a knockout win over Edward Vazquez (17-3
“I wanted to fight a game fighter to show what I am capable,” said Espinoza
Espinosa used the leverage of his six-foot
one-inch height to slice uppercuts under the guard of Vazquez
And when the tall Mexican from Guadalajara targeted the body
it was then that the Texas fighter began to wilt
Though he connected against Espinoza in every round
he was not able to slow down the taller fighter and that allowed the Mexican fighter to unleash a 10-punch barrage including four consecutive uppercuts
The referee stopped the fight at 1:47 of the seventh round

The curtain was drawn on a busy boxing weekend tonight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas where the featured attraction was Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue appearing in his twenty-fifth world title fight
Roman Cardenas for the unified 122-pound crown and Rafael Espinoza vs
Edward Vazquez for the WBO world featherweight diadem) aired on the main ESPN platform with the preliminaries streaming on ESPN+
The finale of the preliminaries was a 10-rounder between welterweights Rohan Polanco and Fabian Maidana
A 2020/21 Olympian for the Dominican Republic
Polanco was a solid favorite and showed why by pitching a shutout
punctuating his triumph by knocking Maidana to his knees late in the final round with a hard punch to the pit of the stomach
the younger brother of former world title-holder Marcos Maidana
fell to 24-4 while maintaining his distinction of never being stopped
a rising force in the 140-pound division with the potential to become a crossover star
advanced to 14-0 (12 KOs) with a second-round stoppage Juan Leon
Olympian Fernando Vargas who had big money fights with the likes of Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya
Emiliano knocked Leon down hard twice in round two – both the result of right-left combinations — before Robert Hoyle waived it off
29-year-old Japanese southpaw Mikito Nakano (13-0
12 KOs) turned in an Inoue-like performance with a fourth-round stoppage of Puerto Rico’s Pedro Medina
had Medina on the canvas five times before referee Harvey Dock waived it off at the 1:58 mark of round four
The shell-shocked Medina (16-2) came into the contest riding a 15-fight winning streak
California junior middleweight Art Barrera Jr
scored a sixth-round stoppage of Chicago’s Juan Carlos Guerra
but the bout had turned sharply in Barrera’s favor when referee Thomas Taylor intervened
Barrera improved to 9-0 (7 KOs). The spunky but outclassed Guerra, who upset Nico Ali Walsh in his previous outing
Muskegon Michigan’s Ra’eese Aleem improved to 22-1 (12) with a unanimous decision over LA’s hard-trying Rudy Garcia (13-2-1)

who has acquired a new nickname – “The Face of Boxing” – is accustomed to fighting on Cinco De Mayo weekend
Canelo was fighting outside the continent of North America and entering the ring at an awkward hour
His match with William Scull started at 6:30 on a Sunday morning in Riyadh
In the opposite corner was 32-year-old William Scull
an undefeated (23-0) Cuban by way of Germany
whose performance was better suited to “Dancing With the Stars” than to a world title fight
Constantly bouncing from side to side but rarely letting his hands go
Scull frustrated Canelo who found it near-impossible to corner him
but one can’t win a fight solely on defense and the Mexican superstar was returned the rightful winner in a bout that was a fitting cap to a desultory two days of Saudi-promoted prizefighting
Canelo became a fully unified super middleweight champion twice over
Terence Crawford was in attendance and HE Turki Alalshikh made it official: Crawford (41-0
39 KOs) will meet in the Fight of the Century (Alalshikh’s words) on Sept
12 in Las Vegas at the home of the city’s NFL team
each of Canelo’s last seven fights has gone the full 12 rounds

The distracted CompuBox operator credited Mikaelian with throwing 300 more punches but there was no controversy
avenged his shocking loss to Bruno Sarace with a unanimous 12-round decision in their rematch
This was Munguia’s first fight with Eddy Reynoso in his corner
Surace’s one-punch knockout of Munguia in mid-December in Tijuana was the runaway pick for the 2024 Upset of the Year
Munguia was 44-1 with his lone defeat coming at the hands of Canelo Alvarez
Munguia had won every round against Surace before the roof fell in on him
but Munguia was the busier fighter and landed the cleaner shots
It was the first pro loss for Surace (26-1-2) and ended his 23-fight winning streak
In a 10-round heavyweight match fought at a glacial pace
Martin Bakole (21-2-1) and Efe Ajagba (20-1-1) fought to a draw
One of the judges favored Ajagba 96-94 but he was outvoted by his cohorts who each had it 95-95
15 more than he carried in his signature win over Jared Anderson
He was never able to effectively close off the ring against the elusive Ajagba who fought off his back foot and failed to build on his early lead
The fight between the Scotch-Congolese campaigner Bakole and his Nigerian-American foe was informally contested for the heavyweight championship of Africa
heavy-handed Cuban light heavyweight Brayon Leon
was extended the distance for the first time while advancing his record to 7-0 at the expense of Mexico’s Aaron Roche (11-4-1)
Leon knocked Roche to the canvas in the fourth round with a right-left combination
but the Mexican stayed the course while eating a lot of hard punches
