Now Copenhagen may join them, as the government there seeks effectively to renationalise it, which is a worrying trend in Europe
Aarhus Airport, serving Denmark's second largest city and economic centre
is scrambling around at present to find one or more investors
having run at a deficit for several years now
it has been the smaller regional airport - smaller than it should be for a region of 1.4 million people - struggling to reach over half a million annual passengers
when the consensus is that a million is regarded as the financial break-even point
There have been some minor route development breakthroughs of late, but Aarhus is still losing traffic to rival airports in a physically small country
although expected to improve in the next two years
This is not a good time for any loss-making airport to be seeking out external investment, and certainly not just as the government brings in an aviation tax. While it remains at a low level for the moment, it isn't critical, but it won't do Aarhus Airport much good either
If an investor is to be found, the chances are that it might be one of the Danish pension funds. One of them is about to lose some or all of its investment in Copenhagen Airports
But they might desire new management as well and that would be an unusual move on their part
the deal needs to be done by the end of 1H2025

Aarhus (oar-hus) has long laboured in the shadow of consummate capital Copenhagen, but transformation is afoot. Denmark's second-largest city is busy staking a claim for visitor attention, and building a reputation as an emerging European destination for savvy city-breakers, festival-goers, art and food fans, and those looking beyond the capital-city conga.

2024 was one of the strongest years in Aarhus Airport’s (AAR) history
surpassing the 500,000 mark and setting the stage for growth in the coming years
“While we faced some stifling of passenger volume potential due to reduced capacity on major city pairs and connecting routes via our Nordic hubs
we still delivered an impressive performance,” AAR’s senior director of route development and marketing
“Norwegian launched its first three routes from Aarhus
but fleet limitations impacted our existing airline partners.”
we observed 60% year-on-year growth in traffic to and from Spain
on top of record numbers—up to 75% year-on-year in peak summer in July
and particularly noticeable to Mallorca and new destination
we see a very strong forward trend on Spain again
and booked load factors are already extremely high in relation to the same period last year.”
Alongside the launch of Norwegian’s three services from Aarhus
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) introduced a new seasonal ski service to Scandinavian Mountains Airport
new airline partner Pegasus Airlines will commence flights from Antalya
More News And Analysis From Routes Europe 2025
“Twice-weekly flights will bring sun-hungry Danes to the Turkish Riviera resorts
while it will also suit our ethnic Turkish population in the Aarhus area,” Surley says
“SAS has also expanded capacity on its Copenhagen and Oslo routes
“Copenhagen will see the introduction of Airbus A320s on peak-time flights
linking Aarhus with SAS’ continually expanding network of both short- and long-haul destinations
This brings an increase in capacity of 150% on those rush-hour flights
which will significantly help drive connecting traffic demand.”
as the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the Nordic region
“It is plain to see that we are very much in need of fast and frequent hub service to Paris
there are many opportune sunshine destinations still to add to our network
and both Spain and Greece have been booming
Dubai and a North American hub would make absolute statistical
Surley also emphasizes the opportunity for long-haul expansion
“Greater Aarhus is the largest metro area in north-northern Europe without a direct scheduled service to such global hubs and long-haul markets and certainly the largest population base more than 3.5 hr
drive-time from such direct flights,” he says
“A demand base of 800,000 passengers for North America within just 100 km [62 mi.] of our airport.”
One of the biggest catalysts for AAR’s rising profile was its successful hosting of Routes Europe in 2024
The event brought key airline decision-makers to the city
showcasing Aarhus as both a growing aviation hub and a destination in its own right
Reflecting on the impact of hosting the event
Surley highlights the increased visibility it brought to Aarhus
“Awareness was the biggest benefit—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have the industry’s most influential figures experience your destination firsthand,” he says
“We are now eager to start ticking off some of those sizeable and available market opportunities.”

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company through its Terminal Investment Ltd
(TiL) group will develop a new container terminal in Denmark’s largest commercial port
It is seen as a challenge to Maersk on its home turf as well as in a port that the company has dominated through its terminal company APM Terminals
Aarhus Havn (the port authority) has signed a land lease with TiL for 170,000 square meters (42 acres) at the new Omniterminal planned for the Port of Aarhus
This comes just weeks after MSC published its new 2025 routes and included a mainliner route between Aarhus and Asia in its new independent service after the end of the 2M alliance with Maersk
Maersk had been challenging MSC efforts to reach an agreement with the port
including taking the port authority to court during the summer
They contended according to the Danish newspaper Finans that they had an agreement with Aarhus Havn since 2020 for the expansion and management of the port’s terminals
The newspaper said that APM Terminals had promised an investment of approximately $300 million but said it would be withdrawn from those plans if a second operator was brought into the port
Aarhus has said that it plans to use open space within the port to develop a new terminal as part of its expansion plans
It is currently the largest commercial port in Denmark and for 2023 it reported handling 73 percent of the total Danish container market
Despite a decline in volume due to global circumstances in 2023
the port highlighted improved financial results
Aarhus says total cargo volume increased by a quarter to over 10 million tons in 2023
With the addition of the Omniterminal and MSC
Aarhus Havn highlights it will be the location for Denmark’s two largest container terminals
The new facility will be developed in two stages with the port saying it is expected to be completed by 2027
MSC is working to develop its standalone approach to the market while also dramatically increasing container carry capacity
The company is increasing onshore investments including in ports and terminals
MSC also recently won approval from the German government for its plan to buy nearly half of the container terminal operator in the Port of Hamburg
its container ship capacity has increased to over 6 million TEU with more ships on order
Article 10 of the Aarhus Convention requires that the Meeting of the Parties continuously review the Convention’s implementation
relying on regular reporting by the Parties
the latest EU report on the matter covers the period 2021–2025
It will be submitted to the Meeting of the Parties of the Aarhus Convention
which will take place in November this year
Reports from previous reporting cycles are available here
Consulting stakeholders is an important part of preparing the reports
including environmental non-governmental organisations
and academics are all encouraged to participate in this consultation process
Consultation document: Draft Aarhus Convention Implementation Report 2025
The consultation period runs from 26 March – 26 April 2025
Stakeholders are encouraged to submit their comments by adding their suggestions into the draft report using track changes
As this is a recurrent exercise conducted by the Commission every four years and the last report was prepared in 2021
the draft report already addresses in tracked changes most updates on the activities carried out between 2021–2025
This will be the sixth report of its kind prepared by the Commission on behalf of the EU
Please note that the focus of this report is on EU actions in the areas addressed by the Aarhus Convention
Activities undertaken by Member States are not covered by the report
since they are covered in separate national reports
Please submit comments within the consultation document to the following functional mailbox: ENV-AARHUSec [dot] europa [dot] eu (ENV-AARHUS[at]ec[dot]europa[dot]eu)
The deadline for submission is 26 April 2025

the ports arm of top liner Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC)
has struck a deal with Denmark’s largest commercial port
will move into the port’s Ominterminal area
where TIL will lease about 170,000 sq m for its own facility
Aarhus is the largest container port in Denmark
handling more than 70% of the country’s container traffic
APM Terminals already operates a terminal at Aarhus capable of handling 20,000 teu ships
and reports from Denmark suggest the Maersk-owned ports business has been challenging MSC’s expansion at the port where its Danish headquarters are already located
MSC is ditching Maersk in the 2M vessel sharing agreement to largely go it alone
and Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd subsequently exiting THE Alliance to join the Danish carrier in what will be called the Gemini Cooperation
MSC revealed to clients earlier this month the make-up of its standalone services that is significantly different to Maersk/Hapag’s when it comes to Danish coverage
Aarhus will still see MSC calling the port directly from Asia
while Maersk will no longer do so when the Gemini partnership comes into force
“Port of Aarhus offers a good location for the future network plans we have made
We will be introducing a direct mainliner between Asia and Aarhus next year
we can provide our customers with a practical logistics solution,” MSC chief executive Toft said
Toft added that MSC is also looking at other routes that could have a “positive impact on Danish business” in the longer term and that the company would consider further investment when new areas are developed at the port
which will see Denmark’s two largest container terminals located in Aarhus
“This provides businesses with more opportunities to trade with the world
and reinforces our role in ensuring Danish supply to the benefit of businesses and Denmark.”

You'll love Aarhus with its stunning architecture
Denmark's second-largest city sits quietly on the eastern coast of the Jutland peninsula, just living its best life as the happiest city in the world (according to the Institute for Quality of Life, anyway). Not only that, Aarhus was also proudly the 2017 European Capital of Culture
So while Copenhagen takes the plaudits as that international beacon of Scandi sophistication
Aarhus should be given a closer look as the good vibes here aren’t restricted to the locals
From quirky Danish attractions like Den Gamble By living museum to magnificent food experiences
there’s plenty to enjoy about this underrated city 185km (115 miles) northwest of the capital.
Northern European cities always make the most of their short summers and Aarhus is no different, with a variety of festivals taking place including the multi-discipline Aarhus Festival on the last Friday in August, June’s ultra cool Northside music festival and the more genteel flower festival in Tivoli Friheden
The general lack of tourists makes summer a good time to visit too
Crisp powder blue skies form pretty autumnal and winter scenes in Aarhus when the temperature drops
with the sleek restaurants and cafes feeling all the cozier for it.
Two to three days is the most you’ll need to see Aarhus’s main attractions. However it’s worth planning ahead as places like Den Gamble By are large and family-oriented
while you also may want to time attractions with nice rooftop viewing platforms to coincide with a pretty late afternoon/evening sunset.
then pairing Aarhus with Copenhagen for a two-city Denmark jaunt could be a good idea (it’s around a 3-hour train to the Danish capital).
Most visitors will arrive at Aarhus Airport which is unusually far from the center (around 40km/25 miles), for a city of this size. The 925x bus runs regularly and takes around 50 minutes to reach central Aarhus, with card payments on board or tickets available through the Midttrafik app.
Aarhus Central Station receives passengers from Copenhagen, as well as international connections with big German cities like Hamburg and Berlin.
Aarhus’s walkable compact center makes taking the bus and tram (Letbane) somewhat redundant
but there are day passes available through Midttrafik which might be more useful in bad weather or with kids in tow.
ARoS is one of the largest art museums in Northern Europe
with around one million visitors per year coming to see its impressive exhibitions and works (including Ron Mueck’s striking 16ft-high sculpture Boy) filling out its ten floors.
is the 150m-long rainbow rooftop panorama designed by Olafur Eliasson
With spectacular 360-degree views of the city seen through the jaunty prism of a circular rainbow walkway that changes color as you move
Perched on a nearby hill are the Aarhus Botanical Gardens
founded in 1875 and now dominated by the shell-like shape of its tropical greenhouses
Housing over 5000 species of tropical and subtropical plants from four different climate zones
these gardens are a fine way to take a break from the hum of the city in a relaxing green space that also comes with a sweeping view of Den Gamble By from above
The best way to see Aarhus’s impressive harbor redevelopment is to take a 1-hour trip onboard the historic M/S Helene with Aros Cruises
With its low-lit interior and Twin Peaks-inspired decor, Erlings Jazz- & Ølbar is a seductive street-corner joint dripping with cool
The regularly updated 14-strong beer board features IPAs
and they host live jazz music every Saturday and some Wednesdays
Aarhus has some serious foodie chops, with an impressive four Michelin-star restaurants to its name showcasing the best in Danish fine dining. But start your gastronomic journey at Aarhus Street Food
a gregarious food court offering everything from Thai curry and American soul food to traditional Danish smørrebrød (open sandwiches)
And for something more immersive, Food Walk host both 2-hour and 4-hour walks sampling local flavors and making new friends on a stroll around this compact city
ARoS offers fine views across Aarhus, but the rainbow walkway’s surreal appeal tends to dominate the affair. For the best views head to the Salling roof garden
hiding in plain sight above the city’s biggest shopping centre.
The multilayered rooftop is dotted with plants
while music flows and cocktails are poured from the cafe-bar
I’ve been to living museums before and always appreciate the effort put into bringing distant time periods back to life through authentic environments and passionate characters. But Den Gamle By ("The Old Town") does things a little differently.
If you want to see the quaint cottages and townhouses of Hans Cristian Andersen’s time then that’s all here, but it’s the rare focus on a more recent past that truly caught my attention.
Have a look around Paul’s Radio shop, a 1974 music and electronics store filled with classic vinyl, dusty cassettes and chunky antique color televisions (that are all available to purchase). Moving even further through time into living memory is the 2014 street, with its 7-Eleven, solarium and even a Blockbuster video store which really cranks up my millennial nostalgia.
And I’m not normally one to succumb to nostalgia either, but this is one of the most original attractions I've visited in recent years and brings the day to a fascinating close.
Basic room for two: 800-900kr (US$110-125)
Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): 600-700kr (US$85-95)
Beer/pint at the bar: 35/70kr (US$4.80/9.60)
Due to the relative lack of tourists, you may get initially addressed in Danish but virtually everybody here speaks English to a high level (though practicing the local lingo is always welcome).
No, you’ll need Danish krone if you’re paying by cash, though paying through card or your phone is so pervasive that it won’t matter if you forget to bring the local currency.
Containerships calling at the container terminal at the Port of Aarhus will soon be able to turn off their diesel generators and receive shore power
The port has unveiled plans to open an onshore power facility for boxships
which will be “the first of its kind” in Denmark
The plant is expected to be completed in 2026
The future plant will be built in collaboration with local company PowerCon which was also behind the shore power plant project at the cruise terminal
The shore power facility for cruise ships was opened in June 2023
“We are pleased that we can once again collaborate with PowerCon to establish a shore power facility
It will reduce both noise and local particle pollution caused by ships using diesel generators
This benefits both the residents of the surrounding area and the employees at the port,” Anne Zachariassen
2024 marked the first full year of operation for the shore power facility at the cruise terminal
with 68% of the cruise ships docking there using shore power
PowerCon will deliver the transformer station and power management system for the new facility
while ShibataFenderTeam and Igus will supply a flexible cable system that can be moved around the quay to meet the ships’ needs
This setup will enable the facility to supply power to up to four containerships simultaneously when fully completed
“The shore power facility at the container terminal is one of the most advanced projects in Europe
We are proud that PowerCon’s technology and expertise contribute to a vision that sets new standards for green port operations,” Jacob Bjarkam
and Stockholm will all offer shore power for containerships by 2030 as part of the “OPS Network” project
The project is supported by the EU fund “Connecting Europe Facilities” with a grant of 18.8 million euros
“We are very pleased that the European Commission and the CEF Committee recognize our high ambitions for the green transition
As some of Northern Europe’s most important ports
it is fantastic that we can collaborate to reduce the shipping industry’s climate footprint—this is a global challenge we stand together to tackle
Shore power for container ships is a crucial part of this effort for all the involved ports,” Zachariassen added

one of the most popular sunshine destinations will now be on the departure board at Aarhus Airport when Pegasus opens a new direct scheduled service to Antalya
which is the gateway to several popular resorts on the Turkish Riviera in southern Türkiye and an attractive hub for travelers to and from a number of central Asian and Near Eastern destinations
It is the first time that Pegasus makes its entrance in the Greater Aarhus area
with the airline thereby gaining access to mainland Denmark’s largest market for potential travelers
the region is a very attractive market for Pegasus
Not only to enjoy the rich pool of holiday travel demand for many thousands of sun-seekers who visit Mediterranean Türkiye each year
but also to serve the large share of people with a Turkish background who live in mainland Denmark and especially in the Aarhus area
With over 67,000 people of Turkish descent living in Denmark and over 11,000 within reach of Aarhus Airport
there is a large market for visiting friends and family
"It is a great pleasure to present a new airline at Aarhus Airport
The new collaboration comes very soon after hosting the prestigious Routes Europe conference in April 2024
where we could showcase the enormous appeal of Aarhus as a destination and strengthen our close dialogue with Pegasus and other airlines
one of the eastern Mediterranean’s largest markets has long been a desire of both holidaymakers and people with Turkish roots who know Pegasus for their great value service and low fare appeal
We naturally expect the route to be extremely well received in our region"
Insight shows that currently a very large share of Aarhus area passengers traveling to Türkiye today
choose to fly from airports at Copenhagen or Hamburg. Focusing on the topic of convenience and customer choice
Lotta Sandsgaard commented from her own personal appreciation for Pegasus Airlines’ highly customer-friendly
“I have regularly used Pegasus to fly within Türkiye
they are an excellent airline with state-of-the-art aircraft
they are a very welcome addition at Aarhus Airport
Our data clearly shows that there is a great deal of unrealized potential in Aarhus towards Türkiye and demand for destinations beyond
Customers naturally crave convenience and everyone wants a shorter journey time to the airport
It will be highly appealing that customers can exchange tedious queues and time on the E45 with a very short drive to Aarhus Airport when currently the vast majority have to reach Copenhagen and Hamburg
we are proud they have chosen to serve Aarhus and I believe this will be a long and exciting co-operation
where we have mutual long-term partnership and growth front-of-mind”

The building’s occupants were evacuated and no serious injuries occurred
East Jutland Police initially responded to an alert from the Søndre Palæ building just before 9am
“The report was that a concrete structure between two floors has collapsed,” communications officer Anne Tidemann of East Jutland Police told news wire Ritzau
Some of the people in the building had to evacuate through windows
“There are no reports of people being trapped or seriously injured,” the spokesperson said just before 10am
Initial reports stated that everyone who had been in the building was now evacuated
fire services and other emergency units have begun securing the site and are working to confirm that no one remains inside
The incident has resulted in the closure of the Sønder Allé street which collects the front entrance to Aarhus Central Station with the city’s long distance bus terminal
Ryesgade is meanwhile closed between Sønder Allé and Rosenkrantzgade
A witness on the scene told local media TV 2 Østjylland that she was passing the building when she noticed people calling for help from the windows
She then helped them to climb out before a partial collapse of the floors inside the building
The exact cause of the collapse is unclear as of Thursday morning

the 516 young sailors at the largest ever World Championships went head to head with three completed races on the first day of competition on Aarhus Bay
Today’s first start was planned for 11.00am
however it was pushed back a few hours as the morning’s weather forecast threatened thunderstorms and extremely unstable winds
At 1:00 p.m Race Management was able to declare the race conditions satisfactory and the 258 participating boats launched eager to hit the startline
the three courses were laid a good distance from the coast to catch the relatively light wind
which however increased positively throughout the day
All three race courses succeeded in completing the three scheduled races of the day which are underway simultaneously during the qualification days
After today’s three races the Polish boat POL 3237 with the mixed crew of Ewa Lewandowska and Krysztof Krolik is at the front in both the field of mixed crews and overall
which is not a big surprise as they have won everything they have entered in the recent months
The Poles were hotly pursued and actually shared first position after two races with the Italian men’s crew ITA 3 of Alex Demurtas and Giovanni Santi
who won men’s silver at the 2023 World Championships
But when they had to retire during the third race
they end the day sitting in overall 2nd place
while they still lead the field of male crews just ahead of Australians Lucas Patrick and Luke Rogers
China lead in the Women’s category Emily Polson and Tiffany Mak sailed a fantastic first day to lead the Women’s fleet by an extensive margin
their closest rivals are Alicja Tutkowska and Alicja Dampc from Poland in 22nd
Third Women’s team is Josefine Nøjgaard and Esther Houborg from DEN in 31st
Mixed Category Kaja Sledzinska and Leon Sapijaszko from Poland sit in second in the mixed category and fourth overall
Third mixed team is Giulia Bartolozzi and Pietro Rizzi from Italy in 13th overall
Anything can still happen With two more days of qualification competition before the final series begins
sailors are fighting to get into Gold fleet and in reaching distance of the podium
With the conditions so challenging and shifty
anything can still happen and the many sailors can look forward to good conditions in the coming days with both sun and wind
which seem to be coming from slightly changing directions
so Aarhus Bugten is likely to to live up to his reputation as “tricky”
the 518 sailors from all around the globe meet to compete for the medals at this year’s 29er World Championship
One record has already been set: the event is set to be the largest 29er World Championships ever and will be hosted by Sailing Aarhus
Aarhus International Sailing Centre will welcome more than 500 of the next generation’s top sailors when the World championship in the 29er boat class gets under way
A total of 259 crews from more than 30 different countries have registered to compete for the world championship in Aarhus Bay
Most participants have already arrived and are making their final preparations on land and at sea – boats and crews are officially registering and measuring their boats in the next few days ahead of the opening ceremony on Saturday
Visitors to the promenade at the far end of Aarhus Ø can therefore already sense that it is buzzing with excitement and anticipation in this world-renowned high performance sailing venue while the sound of flapping sails in the wind signals that something big is about to happen
Strong Danish participation on home ground With six days of sailing (from August 4 onwards) there will be plenty of opportunity for the many two-person crews to show what they can do until August 9
when this years’ World champions in the Men
Women and Mixed categories will be announced
including two crews from the Danish Sailing Association’s youth national team
and there is no doubt that all the Danes will do their part to enjoy the fact that they are on domestic waters
“Competing on home ground is always very special – we are experiencing that right now at the Olympics with the French athletes enjoying their home ground
That is why it is so great that the Danish crews get this experience together with an international experience at the 29er world championship in Aarhus,” says Lars Lundov
which is a partner at the world championships
Ones to Watch Defending 2023 Overall and Mixed World Champion Ireland’s Clementine van Steenberge returns to defend her title

2023 World Championships Mens Silver medallists – Italians Alex Demurtas and Giovanni Santi will be ones to watch in the Men’s fleet as their closest rivals from last year have moved into the 49er class and into Olympic Sailing
A special atmosphere on the waterfront Director of Aarhus International Sailing Centre
has been looking forward to welcoming all the young sailing talents
he and his crew together with many volunteers from among others the five sailing clubs in the City of Smiles are now ready to set sail:
Aarhus is showing its very best side these days
It is precisely at an event like this that our fantastic sailing center with its location in the middle of the city shows its true value as a setting for large
A big thank you must go to Sport Event Denmark
the Salling Foundations and the rest of our partners for making it possible to host a big World Championship like this.”
