If you don't have access to a bike there are hundreds of bike rental facilities across the UK
is simply riding a bike outside for exercise
Track cycling adds a competitive element and sees riders race around a specialist track at high speeds
through to adults going for long countryside rides
Cycling to work is also one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine
There are also a number of cycling clubs around the UK
where coffee and cake stops are as important as the route you ride
and there are rainbow jerseys up for grabs
UCI Track World ChampionshipsWednesday 16 October – Sunday 20 October
A couple of months after the Olympics
some of the best track riders in the world will return to the boards to compete for rainbow bands at the UCI Track World Championships in Copenhagen this week
There are more races at the World Championships compared to the Olympics
with familiar events like the keirin and the Omnium joined by the individual pursuit and the time trial
This is the Track Worlds back in its usual position in autumn
following last year's super-Worlds in Glasgow
Here is our guide to five days of action in Copenhagen (technically
One of cycling’s great stories will reach its finale in Ballerup, as Dan Bigham calls time on his career with the national squad
will take on the individual pursuit in Denmark
having missed out on the world title by five hundredths of a second to Italy’s Filippo Ganna last year
Bigham will “fully dedicate” himself to his new role as the head of engineering at WorldTour team Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe
The absence of double gold medallist Katie Archibald was felt at the Olympics in Paris this summer
The Scot broke her leg just a month before the Games
having tripped innocuously on a step in her garden
Archibald has since been resting and rehabilitating
and now says she’s “ready to race” after the fractures
“I’m thriving on the bike,” she wrote on Instagram
“You’ll just have to wait and see.”
An industrial suburb of Copenhagen, the town of Ballerup is generally unremarkable, but holds a special place in the memories of a number of prominent British cyclists. In 2002, Chris Hoy claimed his first world title at the velodrome
before going on to win 10 more throughout his career
The last time the Track World Championships went to Ballerup was in 2010; that year
while Ed Clancy won the Omnium and Victoria Pendleton claimed gold in the sprint
The first World Championships after an Olympics often provide a springboard for young talent to emerge
as their more senior teammates enjoy an easing of pressure following a hectic Games cycle
Great Britain is taking most of its A-team to Ballerup this month
but keep an eye out for the duo of 20-year-old debutants in the squad: sprinter Harry Ledingham-Horn and Groupama-FDJ’s Noah Hobbs
a triple champion in Paris and the Netherlands’ most successful summer Olympian
now three-time gold medallist Jennifer Valente (USA)
and Italian Madison duo Chiara Consonni and Vittoria Guazzini
Rui Oliviera (Portugal) and Kelland O’Brien (Australia)
The action from the Ballerup Super Arena will be broadcast live in the UK on BBC Two
“I think naturally the intensity has dropped off a little bit [since Paris],” Marchant told CW
“but we’re still wanting to go to the World Championships and win at the end of the day.”
the British trio will be without their German rivals
whose A-team have opted to skip this year’s event
she and her teammates now have a “golden opportunity” to win gold
but still have “absolutely nothing to lose”
“We are Olympic champions and world record holders as it stands
that takes nothing away from what we achieved.”
Emma Finucane (Great Britain)“I feel like she’s going to win loads of world titles,” Victoria Pendleton told CW of Emma Finucane at this year’s Olympics
too; the 21-year-old from Carmarthen has made a hobby of medal hunting
becoming the first British woman in 60 years to win three at a single Olympics this summer
Harrie Lavreysen (Netherlands)The Dutchman is considered the greatest track sprinter of all time
Harrie Lavreysen counts 13 track world titles and five Olympic gold medals
He’ll miss his biggest rival in Denmark
with Matthew Richardson ineligible for selection following his nationality swap to British
Jennifer Valente (USA)With a calm head and a clinical racing style
Jennifer Valente is the rider to beat in the bunch events
The Californian comes to the competition having won two gold medals at the Paris Olympic
and is already a seven-time world champion
Can she win the Omnium for a third year in a row
Lorena Wiebes (Netherlands)The SD-Worx Protime rider is best known for being the best female sprinter in the world
but she also packs a punch on the track; she has won nine national track titles throughout her career
This year’s Worlds will be her first
perhaps with an eye on riding in the velodrome at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028
Noah Hobbs (Great Britain)Twenty-year-old Noah Hobbs is making his elite debut at the Track World Championships in Ballerup
competing in the elimination race and the scratch race
the event in which he became under-23 European champion in July
Road racing fans will know Hobbs for being part of Groupama-FDJ's development squad; he rode the Tour of Britain with the team last month

the country's only title in either men's or women's races at the world championships or Olympics was collected by Harumi Honda in Vienna 37 years ago
Yamasaki brought the gold home when he outsprinted Israel's Mikhail Yakovlev and Colombia's reigning champion Kevin Quintero in the final
who won three straight keirin world titles from 2020 to 2022
was second in the consolation final to finish eighth overall
The 27-year-old five-time Olympic champion took his overall tally to 14 world golds the night before as part of the Dutch sprint team
That matched the record set by Frenchman Arnaud Tournant between 1997 and 2008
Lavreysen still has two races left in Ballerup to overtake Tournant

BCW has been entertaining fans at the Ballerup Hall for over two decades(Image: East Kilbride News)Stars of British Championship Wrestling return to the ring at the under-threat Ballerup Hall in East Kilbride next month for a star-studded show

which has hosted large events in the town since 1966

BCW has hired out the venue for 21 years and entertained hundreds of local fans at 86 shows
Boss Graham McKay told Lanarkshire Live last week the hall's closure would spell "the end of wrestling in East Kilbride"
He said: "We are uncertain about the future of wrestling events in East Kilbride in the future due to the sale of the building which has upset the whole BCW roster deeply
It does look East Kilbride could be losing wrestling at some point in 2025/6
"But for as long as we are still running shows in East Kilbride we will be proving why you simply cannot miss the chance to see BCW live
BCW heavyweight champion Daz Black(Image: East Kilbride News)"The performers are always buzzing to return to East Kilbride and many of them who perform all over the UK still say the East Kilbride fans are right up there as the best in Scotland
"We have been bringing shows like this to East Kilbride for 21 years now
In fact the Ballerup Hall was the venue where we put on our very first BCW show
so this venue has a lot of sentimental value to us."
Over two decades BCW have brought some of the biggest names in wrestling to town including Matt Hardy
(Image: East Kilbride News)WWE stars including Drew Galloway
Kay Lee Ray and Noam Dar started their careers at the Lanarkshire company
The December show line-up includes BCW heavyweight champion Daz Black
Graham added: "As mentioned before many a superstar that started off in BCW have now went on to WWE in America and we know that WWE do currently have there eyes on one or two BCW superstars who you will see in December
"This is why I urge fans to get along to these shows and support local wrestling events as you never know who you may be watching on the TV in years to come
And at East Kilbride you don't just get to watch them wrestle
chat with them and get a photo with them - all that for as little as £10 a ticket
"At WWE's last event in Glasgow some tickets were on sale for as much as £3000 which is crazy as half of the shows featured Scottish stars that used to perform at the Ballerup Hall."
Doors open 6.30pm with the first bell at 7pm
Tickets are priced £12.50 or four for £40. To purchase visit www.ringsideworld.co.uk

The public have hit out at plans that could see the town without a civic building and bring about the permanent closure of the Ballerup Hall - a popular community entertainment venue which has hosted large events in the town since 1966
This is the latest development in the bold new masterplan for EK town centre which includes the creation of around 400 new homes
reducing retail space "to open other opportunities"
creating green and community spaces and improving transport links
The Ballerup Hall can accommodate up to 300 people in concert style and up to 250 for a catered function
BCW Wrestling has hired out the venue for 21 years and entertained hundreds of local fans at 86 shows
BCW Heavyweight Champion BT Gunn with East Kilbride fans(Image: EAST KILBRIDE NEWS)With no suitable alternative venue locally, boss Graham McKay told Lanarkshire Live the closure of the Ballerup Hall would spell "the end of wrestling in East Kilbride"
He said: "This is the first I've heard of this
I hadn't been told anything about the hall being up for sale
I'm devastated not knowing if the upcoming BCW show on December 7 will be my last event in the town
"This would be the end of wrestling in East Kilbride after doing 21 years and 86 shows in the venue
I'm a bit annoyed the council have kept me in the dark about it."
Grado with BCW boss Graham McKay(Image: EAST KILBRIDE NEWS)The council has given the green light for a "bold" £62.2m, 10-year masterplan that "will radically transform the shopping and leisure destination into a vibrant
East Kilbride shopping centre is currently being sold off by its administrators after plunging into administration just weeks before Christmas 2022
It followed a series of difficult years for the centre
the neighbouring Centre West Shopping Centre - the newest part of the centre - will be bulldozed and converted into a housing development
creating up to 400 new homes in the heart of the town
It is hoped the move will drive an annual footfall of approximately 15 million
A national supermarket chain and a budget hotel have so far been granted leases
East Kilbride town centre masterplan.(Image: Threesixty Architecture)Commenting on the latest development on the East Kilbride News Facebook page
reader Jim Paton also hit out saying the sale of the Civic Centre was "further erosion of the identity of East Kilbride"
He added: "A town without a civic building - just a branch office of South Lanarkshire Council."
Maureen Dynes added: "That will leave zero community spaces in East Kilbride to hire."
reader Sean Malley posted: "East Kilbride does not have the infrastructure for another 400 homes in this area."
What are the chances of realistic investment in healthcare
More houses = more people = increased pressure on existing pressurised services."
Council Leader Joe Fagan (Image: Stuart Vance/ReachPlc)Responding to local concerns
Council Leader Joe Fagan highlighted that that the sale of East Kilbride Civic Centre is "not imminent" and revealed his hopes for a new civic centre as part of the masterplan proposal
Cllr Fagan said: “The EK Civic Centre site is being advertised now but it is important to stress that this does not mean a sale
"This is all part of the approach to the town centre masterplan
agreed across all the political parties at the council
and our ambition is to co-ordinate a sale that supports the town centre masterplan
The masterplan includes a new civic building that would effectively replace the current Ballerup Hall and Civic Centre with a facility that can rival those in other nearby towns."
Artist's impressions of the new East Kilbride town centre(Image: Threesixty Architecture)He added: “My strong preference is that an employer or investor acquires the current Civic Centre site and that any capital receipts from a sale can be reinvested back into East Kilbride to help fund a new civic presence within the footprint of a revamped town centre
we just do nt know for sure what market interest there will be in the current site until we ask
“It is important to me that a new civic hub can serve as a base for council jobs
access to local services and also as a venue in the heart of the town
delivering a better service to the town than the current EK Civic Centre does and driving footfall into a new town centre
has to work in tandem with the masterplan and our proposals for a new Civic Centre that can be a home for many of the events and activities that take place in the current building plus many more.”

It will also be ISO27001 and ISO14001 compliant and will adhere to Tier 3 standards
“Ballerup is an attractive municipality to locate a business and atNorth is a great example of this,” said Jesper Würtzen
“The ability to reuse excess heat from the data center to create sustainable district heating in the future is very exciting
and I am looking forward to following the project.”
The new data centre will benefit from Denmark's cool climate and connection to mainland Europe
It is also located near the waste and energy company Vestforbrænding
which supplies district heating to the equivalent of 70,000 households
It will be able to use the data centre’s heat recycling technology
which could potentially supply heat to thousands of Ballerup citizens
"We work purposefully and continuously to utilise waste heat from organisations such as data centres and integrate them into our district heating network,” said Steen Neuchs Vedel
“We are happy to be part of this project and look forward to working with atNorth to efficiently utilise waste heat from their new site to heat local homes.”

An interview with the Mayor of Ballerup in Denmark
Jesper Würtzen has lived in Ballerup ever since he was a child
Würtzen worked in numerous positions at a school in the municipality
He has been a member of the Social Democrats since 2002 and he was elected to the municipal council in 2005
Würtzen became the second Deputy Mayor
he has spoken to TheMayor.EU to discuss Ballerup and its ambitious project: Kildedal city
Ballerup Municipality is a part of Greater Copenhagen
an edge city located northwest of Copenhagen
We have both urban areas and great nature – forests are located south and north of the municipality
When you travel out of Copenhagen towards Ballerup
you will see open landscapes for the first time exiting the capital.
Ballerup is well known for its vast and strong businesses
We are in the lead when you look at GDP contribution per capita in Denmark
and we are one of the municipalities with the most international businesses and strong business clusters within life science
We have more workplaces than citizens and the unemployment is lower compared to the rest of the capital area and Denmark as a whole
that our strong and diverse business conditions are our largest attraction
the most renowned single attraction of the city is the national velodrome located in the Ballerup Super Arena
which is the venue of and home to the national Danish track cycling team
They expect to win Olympic medals at the coming Olympic Games in Tokyo.
I assumed office just as the global financial crisis had ended
we now experience a vibrant city development based on our political decisions
We have more housing built in the three city centres of the municipality and we transform old industrial areas into new and modern centres for businesses and housing
More and more people move to Ballerup Municipality and the number of workplaces is rising as well
We continue to work on our specific goal to reduce the emission of CO2
we are working on our climate policy with affirmative actions in order to follow the national goals of CO2 reduction
Kildedal is a new vibrant urban area where fellowship and sustainability are the core sense of the community
Kildedal is easily accessible and located in close proximity to both open landscapes and Copenhagen
which is why Kildedal is “for life”
The ambition is to establish a full urban community with synergies between housing
retail and public sector functions that are visible and easy to access for both citizens and employees
Ballerup’s ambition is to expand the already very successful life science ecosystem:
supporting the “future of work” as well as all known sustainable technologies in both the building and establishing process
and thereafter in the facility management.
The infrastructure of the area will also meet high standards of sustainability with a high level of certification
It is amongst our ambition to utilize excess heating
The area will have an urban structure
connecting streets and integrating them with the surrounding landscape. The landscape will invite citizens and employees to nurse public gardens located either on the surface or rooftops.
We will attract local farmers to sell their local produce and encourage canteen facilities as well as restaurants to go organic
Sustainability is meant to be part of everybody's life when in Kildedal
The process of developing the idea of Kildedal has been interesting
The overall business climate in Ballerup is quite strong
most exceed the average of the Greater Copenhagen area altogether – in growth
Many are international corporates but also many of the Danish-based companies are exporting
we were advised to strengthen the clusters further rather than to establish a new one
The goal is also to establish an environment in which local companies can expand their business
Being strong within Life Sciences and IT made it all very clear that we shall focus on what binds them together
which is why focus is on the IT part of life sciences
Having a very strong vision for the business development area
Kildedal needed to connect to a place where citizens feel at home
This is what the vision does – connect liveability with business in a sustainable way
Every single councillor in Ballerup Municipality has agreed on a political vision that dictates the development of the municipality going towards 2029
It is the leading point and framework both for the administration and for the councillors in order to develop politics and actions in every aspect of the municipality
I can only recommend this way of thinking and working.
it is of great importance to involve the citizens of Ballerup Municipality of today in the making and the development of the municipality so that the Ballerup Municipality of tomorrow is a nice place to live and work in as well
