seemed to be Brondby's final hope of winning the Danish title when Frederik Birk's side were humiliated in their own stadium through a 0-3 defeat in the "New Firm" derbyFC Copenhagen recorded their third successive win in the Superliga championship playoffs and the biggest so far this season FC Copenhagen's German goalkeeper Diant Ramaj played his first derby since three weeks ago where he head-butted Brondby's Thomas Mikkelsen and received a three-game suspension the heavy pressure he faced did not seem to affect Ramaj who was one of the main characters before the break After just one minute, he saved his team, when Mathias Kvistgaarden was played through after Jacob Neestrup's side had lost possession in midfield The visitors seemed somewhat overwhelmed at the start of the match and made a series of mistakes but FC Copenhagen gradually dug themselves back into the match but had problems finding space in Brondby's well-organized rearguard In the other end Kvistgaarden was handed a new chance to get on the scoreboard after half an hour when Benjamin Tahirovic delivered a wonderful through-ball for the Celtic-target Ramaj saved again Brondby - FC Copenhagen - Player ratingsFlashareThe visitors took the lead a bit out of the blue barely ten minutes before the break An initially harmless cross from Giorgi Gocholeishvili was flicked on by Thomas Delaney and in-form Jordan Larsson made no mistake to open the score from close range to score his fourth foal in four games The home side began the second half with a much-needed injection of energy and quickly created two good opportunities the atmosphere never reached the level that usually characterizes a derby between the two top teams when Victor Froholdt hammered the ball into the roof of the net after 63 minutes to make it 2-0 the Brondby-defense caved in again when Brazilian Gabriel Pereira popped up at the back post to triple the lead The Local Europe ABVästmannagatan 43113 25 StockholmSweden Denmark between 2012 and 2022 was hardly welcoming to foreign workers With ever-tightening citizenship requirements and more complex work permit rules But that didn't stop foreign workers from streaming into the capital, according to new statistics from the city government published on Friday The number of foreign workers in Copenhagen more than doubled between 2012 and 2022 to around 107,000 Foreigners by 2022 were doing 12 percent of the jobs in the city more than double their share in the rest of Denmark The jobs they do are also increasingly high-end 37 percent of workers had a long tertiary education or PhD Some 28 percent had a medium-length education (up from 18 percent) and 13 percent had a short tertiary education (down from 22 percent) Companies in Copenhagen have shown some success in recruiting the international workers they need Only 50 percent of those who arrived in the Greater Copenhagen region in 2017 were still there five years later compared to 55 percent of those who arrived in 2012 The retention rate actually improved for 'highly qualified international workers' defined as international workers whose income within a year of entry is at or above the threshold for the pay limit scheme (514,000 kroner per year in 2025) As many as 45 percent of those who arrived in 2017 were still in Denmark after five years the 5-year retention rate for other international workers decreased from 58 percent for those who arrived in 2012 to 51 percent for the 2017 arrivals READ ALSO: What proportion of foreign nationals stay in Denmark for the long term? the regional talent attraction and investment agency "The improvement in retention rates for highly skilled workers is a testament to their value to Danish companies which offer them attractive career opportunities," he said the ability to transition smoothly into new jobs—whether arriving as job seekers or moving from student to employment—has been pivotal."  When it came to the overall decline in retention rates he said this could be largely attributed to "the difficulties internationals and expats face in feeling included at work and in society" particularly the tougher language and self-sufficiency requirements enacted in 2015 almost certainly also played some role in reducing the retention rate The Covid-19 pandemic also have influenced job opportunities and hence retention rates in 2020 and to a lesser extent 2021 especially in the restaurant and tourism industries The government also tightened work permit rules over the period to favour more highly paid and highly skilled foreign workers The origin of foreign workers in Denmark has also changed markedly which could have impacted retention patterns India was the most common country of origin for new international workers arriving in Copenhagen shooting up from 15th place ten years earlier The 5,400 Indian workers in the capital now constitute five percent of the international workforce with India the 4th most frequent origin country Indians are even more heavily represented among 'highly qualified international workers' comprising 16 percent of this group in 2022 The number of some other nationals has declined in 2012 the most common origin country among international workers from Asia dropping to sixth position among Asian countries by 2022 Several countries in Europe have also fallen down the ranking the second most frequent origin country in 2012 which was the 3rd most frequent origin country in 2012 and Norway fell from the 5th most frequent origin country in 2012 to the 8th in 2022 Copenhagen has been making progress on removing one of the biggest barriers to retaining skilled foreign workers the problems their partners face in getting jobs nearly 75 percent of the partners accompanying newly arrived international workers in Copenhagen were in employment in 2022 Overgaard put this success partly down to "targeted career programs for partners of international workers" such as the Copenhagen Career Program offered by International House Copenhagen The change may have also reflect the significant drop in unemployment levels between 2012 when the country was still recovering from the financial crisis to further increasing retention rates would be to make foreign workers feel more included socially "Addressing these issues is essential for ensuring that Copenhagen remains an attractive and welcoming city for international talent."  Please log in here to leave a comment Home » The Ruby Hotels brand comes to Berlin and Copenhagen soulful design and experience through captivating photography from his semester abroad in Copenhagen and travels across Europe with the Davidson Chorale documenting cultural experiences from Danish smoking culture to Polish landscapes and musical performances “I chose Davidson because when I was on my tour I connected with a current student and he gave me a personal tour around campus and took me to club meetings where I really appreciated the connected culture of Davidson.” I left the United States for the first time when I studied a semester abroad in Copenhagen It was a bit of a culture shock leaving what I knew and travelling to a brand-new place I really enjoyed the opportunity to get to know a new culture and explore the city and an exploratory photography class.  we had different prompts to push us to explore a different style or technique I created a photo-project examining the smoking culture in Denmark I had the opportunity to travel with the Davidson Chorale on their trip to Zakopane and Krakow in Poland over winter break as a photographer.  Explore my semester abroad through these photos I captured along the way This is a man I met on the side of the street in Copenhagen and included others might not have been exposed to before (704) 894-2000 my wife Shae and I flew over to Denmark to go on a behind the scenes tour of Thomas Dambo’s studio in Copenhagen (he’s the artist who creates troll sculptures around the world using reclaimed wood) We booked tickets on that tour just before Christmas last year which worked out perfectly Shae and I each had an Amex Platinum card on which we hadn’t redeemed our $200 Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) credits for 2024 When researching our Copenhagen hotel options I noticed that Villa Copenhagen was fairly reasonably priced at less than $300 per night for our dates meaning we’d be out of pocket less than $100 per night after the credits so I booked us a couple of nights there over the weekend we’d be visiting We later decided to elongate our trip a little so we booked another night there using one of our 2025 FHR credits as well as a night at the Clarion by the airport (I’ll publish a review of that hotel in the next week) at the end of our trip Our flight to Copenhagen landed at about 7:30am we decided to head straight to the hotel in the hope that we could check in early One of the benefits on FHR stays is the ability to check in from 12pm based upon availability and we hoped we might get lucky with a chance to check in even earlier than that so we left our bags at the front desk and went out to explore the city for a while so we headed up to our room to sleep off some of our jetlag Villa Copenhagen’s building was once the Central Post Office before being transformed into a hotel in 2020 As a result of it being a converted building in Europe I’d booked a standard queen room and we apparently got upgraded to the next room type which is larger one of the hotel’s best features is its interior courtyard its glass roof ensures the lobby is flooded with light throughout the day as well as a bakery from which the hotel gets pastries at breakfast there’s a pretty good spread at its buffet which is included for free when booking through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts (Update: Based on a couple of comments below breakfast is apparently included on all stays regardless of how you book.) There’s a rooftop outdoor swimming pool as well as a poolside bar for guests to enjoy it’s in a great area for exploring the city although that was closed during our visit (it was due to open for the season a week or two later) while the rest of downtown is walkable from the hotel We had a nice stay overall and I’d be happy to stay there again if we had FHR credits to burn although I wouldn’t necessarily recommend getting dinner at the hotel’s courtyard bar – more about that below n.b. […] I published a more comprehensive review of our stay at Villa Copenhagen over on Frequent Miler I’ve almost stayed here a couple times but even with the FHR credit it’s worked out to be more expensive than other options on my dates which has seemed like a waste since I barely spend any time in the hotel when I’m in Copenhagen (one of my favorite cities) I’ve stayed at the Comfort Hotel Vesterbro a couple times (not on points) and found it to be really good value for the money My last time there was about 8 years ago though I want to make a pointed comment that you seem to be fascinated with this guy Dambo as I literally attempted to book this same hotel yesterday I am staying for a week in Copenhagen at the end of May (Beer Festival) and still have a boatload of Choice Points from when they moved over from Radisson I found availability for my dates and kept encountering a website error and the remedy was to call and book over the phone I was then told that Choice points were unusable for any of the Ascend branded properties in Copenhagen Ended up hanging up and resuming searching for a hotel I ended up just booking the Comfort Vesterboro for the week (Which went through fine online) I imagine I could have tried again and maybe got a different person but not sure if that would have helped much I use the hotel’s outdoor rooftop pool quite a bit in the winter But you have to book a free spot to use it as they want to limit how busy it gets Award bookings using points include breakfast for no charge as long as it is taken in the breakfast room on the level below the main entrance level Thank you – I’ve added a note to the post regarding breakfast This is a timely review for me as my wife and I have some dates in Copenhagen in late July I always struggle to make a definitive decision on where to stay Currently we have The Nimb booked with Hilton points and both Villa Copenhagen and Comfort Vesterbro with Choice points I still can’t decide whether to splurge for The Nimb (an SLH property) or squeeze some value out of a healthy chunk of Choice points we’re staying at the Clarion at the airport as well because we get in so late on our first night and depart so early on our departure date I was only considering Villa Copenhagen because I’ve struggled to find a good way to redeem my Choice points Stephen’s review was a little underwhelming and this likely will be our only trip to Copenhagen and The Nimb has such stellar reviews Looks like a decent option for choice points A couple of things that I found in the website – Worldwide and hubs across the planet have been assessed across six major factors Sure, a city can have stunning galleries or brilliant food but arguably the factor that will affect your experience the most are your interactions with its people – and there’s a good chance that they’ll be a whole lot friendlier if you’re in a happy city.  To shed some light on where that actually might be, the Happy City Index is back for its sixth edition and hubs across the planet have been assessed on their citizens and slotted into either the ‘gold’ ‘silver’ or ‘bronze’ category.  Topping the ranks in the ‘gold’ category and earning the title of the happiest city on the planet? That would be Copenhagen.  The Danish capital acquired a total of 1039 points faring particularly well thanks to its ‘commitment to education and innovation’ ‘dedication to research and development’ and an ‘active and participatory democracy’.  Heard of ‘hygge’? It’s a Danish concept which the country’s official website describes as being ‘about taking time away from the daily rush to be together with people you care about - or even by yourself - to relax and enjoy life’s quieter pleasures’ This way of life has a lot to do with why Copenhagen’s population is so cheerful.  A couple of examples include enjoying a picnic in the summer months or curling up next to a fire – wholesome, right? To learn more, you can head to Copenhagen’s Happiness Museum (yes Last year, representatives of the Greater Copenhagen Region launched a ‘life quality insurance’ campaign, which essentially guaranteed that you would feel happier after moving to Copenhagen – and if not, they’d help cover you moving home again. The two college students, both United States citizens from the Chicago area, were accused of assault while visiting the Scandinavian country on their spring break, according to a statement from Copenhagen police. Owen Ray, a 19-year-old studying at the Miami University in Ohio, and his unnamed friend, an Indiana University student, were detained at Copenhagen Airport on April 1 over an alleged dispute with an Uber driver the night prior, Jordan Finfer, a U.S.-based attorney for Ray's family, told ABC News. "We were both just very shocked about the fact that we were being arrested over this incident," Ray, a Chicago native, told Good Morning America. "We had done nothing wrong. We were the, you know, victims of an attack." In an account relayed to Finfer, who then shared the details with ABC News, Ray said that he and a friend were in an Uber on March 31 when they realized they had entered the wrong address for their destination -- and the driver allegedly refused to take them anywhere else. All parties -- Ray, the friend and the Uber driver -- eventually got out of the car, and an altercation then allegedly occurred, Finfer said, based on Ray's account. "The Uber driver came back around, got out of his car," Finfer said. "Informed Owen and his friend that he had called nine of his buddies to kick their ass." Finfer says Ray told him that the driver kicked Ray in the groin, and in response, Ray pushed him away and the driver fell, the attorney recounted, adding that Ray and his friend then ran away. The two students were detained at Copenhagen Airport the next day while trying to return home, Finfer told ABC News. Local police detained them after deeming them "flight risks," claiming they were planning to run from the incident, he said. "That the morning after the incident, he went to the airport to leave on a very early morning flight of a ticket that he had booked weeks in advance before the incident. He wasn't fleeing the country. It was a booked ticket way in advance of this incident," mother Buchen-Ray said. "Our son was supposed to come home from Copenhagen... I woke up to a text message that said, 'Mom, I'm in prison in Copenhagen, call the U.S. Embassy.'" A Copenhagen police spokesperson tells ABC News in a statement, "The Copenhagen Police can confirm, that on March 31, two American citizens were arrested in Copenhagen, and on March 31 they were brought before the court charged with common assault. They were sentenced to 10 days pre-trial detention. This verdict has since extended until April 24." A lawyer said later Monday they have not been charged. Speaking over the weekend, Finfer said, "The fact that he hasn't been charged and is likely to serve 60 days or 45 days in a foreign prison is shocking." Ray's Denmark-based attorney, Eigil Strand, confirmed to ABC News that as of 10:50 p.m. Danish time on Sunday, both of the young men were still being detained. But on Monday, Ray's parents said he the 19-year-old had been released from the Danish prison. Police later confirmed to ABC News that both students had been released. But now, they are stuck in Denmark. "They're stuck in that country until the Danish authorities say otherwise," said ABC7 Chief Legal Analyst Gil Soffer. Soffer says, legally speaking, this is not entirely unusual. Still in Denmark, Ray's mother is by his side. "I'm not leaving without him," she said. "And his friend, for that matter. And we're hoping for the best. I mean, they're both good kids. They're good students. There's no reason to hold them at this point." The U.S. State Department provided a statement to ABC7 on Sunday saying, "We are aware of media reports of two U.S. citizens detained in Denmark. Staff at our embassy in Copenhagen are providing consular assistance. The Department has no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment." Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin's officer released a statement, saying they have "been in regular contact with the family and our embassy in Denmark since being made aware of situation." An Uber spokesperson said in a statement to ABC News on Sunday, "The safety of everyone who uses the Uber app is a top priority, and we take reports of violence very seriously. Any additional questions about the investigation should be directed to the Danish police." ABC7 Chicago's Cate Cauguiran, Liz Nagy, the ABC7 I-Team and ABC News' Benjamin Siu and ABC7 Chicago contributed to this report.
